- 0:00Speaker 1: Do human beings have a limited amount of empathy? It's
- 0:03Speaker 1: one more thing, I'm strong and getty, one more thing
- 0:15Speaker 1: three two one. Yeah, I don't know how well you
- 0:26Speaker 1: could hear that? Three two one see you The last
- 0:28Speaker 1: words of a British daredevil as he attempted to base
- 0:31Speaker 1: jump off a twenty nine story building in Thailand. His
- 0:34Speaker 1: shoote did not open, he went splat on the cement
- 0:36Speaker 1: and he is no more. So my question was, and
- 0:43Speaker 1: I think this is an interesting one, do human beings
- 0:46Speaker 1: have a limited amount of empathy? Individual human beings? Because
- 0:49Speaker 1: when I I hear a story like that, I have
- 0:55Speaker 1: no feeling whatsoever, like of sadness or you're dead, because
- 1:03Speaker 1: I feel like I've only got so much empathy and
- 1:06Speaker 1: I'm gonna save it for those soldiers that died sleeping
- 1:10Speaker 1: in their barracks and Jordan the other day, and their families,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and you know a million other examples you come across
- 1:17Speaker 1: every single day in the news or maybe even your
- 1:19Speaker 1: own personal life. But somebody who decides to be a daredevil,
- 1:22Speaker 1: and the whole point of being a daredevil is sometimes
- 1:25Speaker 1: it doesn't work. Otherwise you're not a dared devil yours,
- 1:28Speaker 1: I mean It's as similar to sitting in an office
- 1:29Speaker 1: chair every day. I mean, if there's no risk, there's
- 1:32Speaker 1: no excitement to it, and if now and then it
- 1:34Speaker 1: doesn't go right, I just I feel nothing for that person.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So it's it.
- 1:37Speaker 2: There's death defying stunt and death said you know today
- 1:40Speaker 2: I went or would you say? Look, there's no limit
- 1:44Speaker 2: on empathy. You can be empathetic toward the you know,
- 1:47Speaker 2: the parents of the child who was abducted, or those
- 1:49Speaker 2: people who died in Jordan, and this guy who got
- 1:52Speaker 2: squashed because he has people who love him also, Which
- 1:54Speaker 2: is it, Katie?
- 1:57Speaker 1: Why are you putting me on the spot to make
- 2:00Speaker 1: you uncomfortable? Very good? I think, I don't know. Well,
- 2:06Speaker 1: what do you do when the guy died? Well, no
- 2:08Speaker 1: part of me's with you.
- 2:09Speaker 3: I'm like, okay, well, if he hadn't to jumped off
- 2:10Speaker 3: the building, you wouldn't be dead, correct, right, So obviously
- 2:14Speaker 3: my heart goes out more to those people where it's
- 2:16Speaker 3: an uncontrollable situation. But then again, of course I think
- 2:19Speaker 3: about this guy's family too, and I kind of you
- 2:21Speaker 3: know that sucks.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know, Yeah, I don't.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I don't have a lot of empathy for him. I
- 2:26Speaker 2: don't have antipathy though, I'm not like to the guy
- 2:30Speaker 2: and thinking.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Yes what you get? No, no, no, I don't have
- 2:32Speaker 1: that at all. I just got nothing. I have no
- 2:34Speaker 1: feeling whatsoever for it. Huh. Sometimes it doesn't work. Didn't
- 2:37Speaker 1: work this time. He struck a bargain he was comfortable with.
- 2:41Speaker 2: He had a life I'll bet he enjoyed very much,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and an all an ever present possibility came true.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Fair deal. Yeah.
- 2:52Speaker 3: I think it's a big scale of people's emotions too,
- 2:54Speaker 3: because I mean there'll be so many times where I'll see.
- 2:57Speaker 1: A video and somebody will be like, oh, I'm crying.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Why is there?
- 3:01Speaker 2: We go?
- 3:01Speaker 1: My phone won't silence, so there we go, Sorry about that.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Or somebody will be like.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Oh, I'm watching this and I'm crying, and I'm going,
- 3:07Speaker 3: why why are you? What is what about this is
- 3:11Speaker 3: making you cry? It'll be some heart touching thing.
- 3:13Speaker 1: But I don't know. I think it's a different range
- 3:15Speaker 1: and emotion for people. Hmmm. Somebody might be that in
- 3:18Speaker 1: maybe you're dead inside, just like Jack.
- 3:20Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Well, more likely I was trying to figure out if
- 3:25Speaker 1: I'm a bad person. But as Joe always says, there
- 3:27Speaker 1: are plenty of examples of why you're a bad person.
- 3:29Speaker 1: You don't need to look to this one again. We
- 3:31Speaker 1: could hold another staff vote if you'd like, but I'd
- 3:34Speaker 1: like to be in on that vote. Another staff vote.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Everyone say, I I an.
- 3:43Speaker 3: No, I.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I admire a guy like that on one level, but no,
- 3:48Speaker 2: I'm not going to pretend to be heartbroken. He lived
- 3:52Speaker 2: an exciting, wild, short short as it turns out, was
- 3:58Speaker 2: he married?
- 4:00Speaker 1: It doesn't say I doubt it. He was like in
- 4:02Speaker 1: his I think he's twenty nine or something.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I was just gonna say that would be that's I
- 4:06Speaker 3: dated a daredevil who used to love to do things
- 4:09Speaker 3: that would end up in injury, and it was the
- 4:11Speaker 3: most frustrating relationship I've ever been in.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll bet I don't know so anyway, So you've
- 4:16Speaker 1: got that, do you feel anything for that? And then
- 4:18Speaker 1: this one came across this yesterday, and I'll just tell
- 4:21Speaker 1: you that our friend Tim sand Online responded to this
- 4:26Speaker 1: with I guess I must be dead inside. Then oh,
- 4:30Speaker 1: a phrase that several of us have already used about
- 4:32Speaker 1: this story. Here's what it was. Somebody tweeted out the
- 4:35Speaker 1: picture of Travis Kelcey kissing Taylor Swift when they met
- 4:39Speaker 1: on the football field after the game and he said, hey, sweetie,
- 4:41Speaker 1: and she walks up and kisses him, and I thought
- 4:43Speaker 1: it was cute. But anyway, here is the tweet. I
- 4:45Speaker 1: love this photo because it invokes primal reactions in people.
- 4:49Speaker 1: They are the couple everyone wishes they were in high school.
- 4:51Speaker 1: They represent the summon of popularity and success. Those who
- 4:56Speaker 1: fall short this ideal cannot help but feel the sting
- 4:59Speaker 1: of envy mirror into your soul. And Tim said, I
- 5:03Speaker 1: must feel dead inside then, because I feel nothing about this.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I thought it was cute. I thought, oh, two young
- 5:08Speaker 1: people in love. We should leave him alone when I
- 5:09Speaker 1: saw it.
- 5:10Speaker 2: But yeah, okay, I'm trying to process that. Okay, So
- 5:15Speaker 2: in Syria, I reacted badly to it because I'm jealous
- 5:20Speaker 2: of them from my high school inadequacy and my phone.
- 5:23Speaker 1: No, no, he's saying, you like it because they portray
- 5:28Speaker 1: what you wanted you wanted to be. See. I don't
- 5:31Speaker 1: know if I buy this or not, although I think
- 5:33Speaker 1: you're lying if you didn't, If you if you say
- 5:37Speaker 1: I didn't want to be the high school football star
- 5:39Speaker 1: or homecoming queen or in love or popular? Really, I mean,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean I was not envious of
- 5:46Speaker 1: those people, Like I didn't walk around envious, But I'd
- 5:50Speaker 1: be lying, wouldn't if I said, I really don't want
- 5:54Speaker 1: to be that now, I legitimately wanted nothing to do
- 5:58Speaker 1: with that in high school. I did not hear that
- 6:02Speaker 1: I did too, but I think it was it was
- 6:06Speaker 1: some sort of protection mechanism for my psyche or something.
- 6:10Speaker 1: It seems weird to like, you don't want to be
- 6:13Speaker 1: popular or attractive and in love.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Who doesn't want to be popular or attractive and in love? Yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 2: I'm just and I don't want to be rejects. Premise
- 6:22Speaker 2: out of hand guy, Because I haven't thought about this.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I just I don't know. Maybe it's because I'm soft
- 6:31Speaker 1: and thoughtful and have the heart of a poet.
- 6:36Speaker 2: What but what when Iday, when I see Michael, Michael
- 6:43Speaker 2: says what, I'll come in there and slap you silly
- 6:46Speaker 2: if you don't admit I have the heart of a poet, Michael.
- 6:51Speaker 2: But if I see like an old couple holding hands
- 6:56Speaker 2: and I think that's really.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Sweet, it's simple they love each other, you secretly want
- 7:00Speaker 1: to be elderly? Yeah, just I don't know if I
- 7:04Speaker 1: buy it.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I don't.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I get way more of a reaction out of an
- 7:09Speaker 1: elderly couple than a younger couple. Yeah, a couple of young,
- 7:13Speaker 1: hot people are in love. I don't. Again, I don't
- 7:17Speaker 1: have antipathy for them. I'm I'm mad at them.
- 7:19Speaker 2: For that, but I don't particularly you two hotties go
- 7:23Speaker 2: off to get a room.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Well, so I guess I got both going at the
- 7:27Speaker 1: same time in that, Like when they put the camera
- 7:30Speaker 1: on Taylor and she's jumping up and down in a
- 7:32Speaker 1: hugging Patrick Maholmes wife. I think, Okay, you're young, you're beautiful,
- 7:37Speaker 1: you're unbelievably rich and famous. Of course you're happy. I mean,
- 7:41Speaker 1: it just disgusts me on many levels. But on the
- 7:44Speaker 1: other hand, to say I don't want to be young, rich,
- 7:49Speaker 1: attractive and admired would be who am I trying to kid?
- 7:53Speaker 1: Of course everybody wants that, don't they. I don't know.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I guess I'm just questioning whether that was any part
- 7:59Speaker 2: of my reaction to the two of them spooching at Midfield.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Yeah, if that has anything to do with the other,
- 8:04Speaker 1: I agree. I don't think it was that deep yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 1: I wish I were that deep. I just thought, oh,
- 8:12Speaker 1: that's cute. I love love. I'm pro love. I hope
- 8:15Speaker 1: those two kids are happy. Okay, So you're uh okay
- 8:20Speaker 1: with not having much of a reaction to a guy
- 8:22Speaker 1: going splat on the pavement if it was his choice,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and not much of a reaction to the people kissing
- 8:27Speaker 1: at the fifty yard line. Okay, correct.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I'm not dead inside. I'm just mostly numb. It's like
- 8:32Speaker 2: two hours after a dental appointment. My lips sagging and
- 8:36Speaker 2: I'm getting spit all over my chin.
- 8:37Speaker 1: But I can feel a little bit. Yeah, still can't
- 8:40Speaker 1: drink out of a straw. If Travis and kel uh
- 8:47Speaker 1: take two? Yeah, take two, Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift
- 8:52Speaker 1: get married, I hope to register to Target. Yeah, well,
- 8:56Speaker 1: they have lots of kids.
- 8:57Speaker 2: America could use a new generation of super beautiful, talented,
- 9:02Speaker 2: virile children.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Mumm, well, I guess that's it.
