- 1:16Speaker 7: We always head out into the world.
- 1:19Speaker 6: We are coming to you live via digital recording.
- 1:36Speaker 1: From the improv here in Louisville. And with that, we
- 1:39Speaker 1: have our special guest co-host for the week, Mr.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Jay Maher.
- 1:43Speaker 1: All righty. Check, check, check.
- 1:47Speaker 5: Hi, guys.
- 1:49Speaker 1: My name is Fred. Thanks for having me, gentlemen.
- 1:54Speaker 5: I just had a Philly cheesesteak, and nothing has ever
- 1:57Speaker 5: hit my stomach that hard that quickly. I feel bad
- 2:01Speaker 5: being in Louisville with all this great food and having
- 2:03Speaker 5: a Philly cheesesteak at a mini mall across the street.
- 2:05Speaker 1: We do have a lot of restaurants. I won't lie.
- 2:07Speaker 1: It's ridiculous the amount of food we have here. What's
- 2:10Speaker 1: great food? I asked the lady at my hotel. I said,
- 2:12Speaker 1: if I wanted to eat something real quick, where.
- 2:14Speaker 5: Should I go?
- 2:15Speaker 1: She said, you can go to the Hard Rock or Fridays.
- 2:18Speaker 5: I said, all right. Well, I said, it's like I
- 2:22Speaker 5: think like if there's a thought bubble and then a
- 2:24Speaker 5: speech bubble in a comic strip. My speech bubble said, okay.
- 2:28Speaker 5: My thought bubble was, bitch, I didn't come.
- 2:30Speaker 1: To Louisville to eat at a Friday's.
- 2:32Speaker 5: I'm going to market, excuse me, toast on market and
- 2:35Speaker 5: I'm going to order the king.
- 2:36Speaker 1: There you go.
- 2:38Speaker 5: That was the greatest meal I've had in my life.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I had it yesterday and then I went home and
- 2:41Speaker 1: shit a waiter.
- 2:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 1: We do have classy, classy restaurants around here.
- 2:45Speaker 5: It was so good, dude.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, they're a lot. Like, really close. Jack Fry's.
- 2:50Speaker 5: We haven't talked the whole time so far. Yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Can you hear him? As much as I ever can, yeah.
- 2:56Speaker 5: I'm not used to sitting this far away from the mic,
- 2:58Speaker 5: so my podcast, we have to swallow them. Really? Yeah.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Just because it's phallic. Well, whatever, you know, you need
- 3:06Speaker 1: to do. As long as we get it back eventually.
- 3:09Speaker 1: We should. We just like a lot of background noise.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it's fine.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Try to let the air conditioner have its say.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Try being on stage with that sound. That's a joke.
- 3:19Speaker 5: That's a laugh-erasing sound. It's really uncanny. They told me
- 3:24Speaker 5: last night it's controlled by the complex, not by the club.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So I was going to have him just turn it
- 3:28Speaker 1: off for the second show.
- 3:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 1: And he said, well, we'd have to, like, call the city. Well,
- 3:33Speaker 1: get him on the phone. That means the hard rock
- 3:35Speaker 1: would have no AC. That's fine. You weren't going to
- 3:38Speaker 1: go get a burger there anyway. No, but I had
- 3:40Speaker 1: to get a Philly cheesesteak. I'm sweating.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Look at this. Maybe that wasn't a good idea. How's
- 3:45Speaker 5: your Philly cheesesteak? It's good. My niece Emily says it's good,
- 3:48Speaker 5: so it's good.
- 3:50Speaker 1: She's like two bites in and mine's gone. You were
- 3:52Speaker 1: the guinea pig. I kind of swallowed that thing. I
- 3:54Speaker 1: destroyed it. I thought you guys were in a hurry.
- 3:57Speaker 8: Well, I'm assuming most people are probably familiar with your work,
- 4:01Speaker 8: but if.
- 4:02Speaker 1: We need to do a rundown.
- 4:04Speaker 8: Where do you want to begin? I mean, you start
- 4:06Speaker 8: off pretty early on and end up in the cast
- 4:09Speaker 8: of Saturday Night Live.
- 4:09Speaker 1: That's kind of huge.
- 4:11Speaker 5: That's a big one.
- 4:13Speaker 1: That's a small fraternity.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:15Speaker 8: I mean, even now, it's... And it's harder than anything,
- 4:19Speaker 8: I think, to stick around there, it seems like. There's
- 4:22Speaker 8: a lot of politics going on, so it seems.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I think it might actually work against you to stick
- 4:28Speaker 1: around there, too.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:29Speaker 1: It's a weird fraternity, too.
- 4:31Speaker 5: It's... Like, people you've never met that were on the show,
- 4:35Speaker 5: if you meet them out in public, you sort of
- 4:38Speaker 5: grab it.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Like, black guys always nod at each other in the mall. Bikers,
- 4:42Speaker 1: they wave to each other. Yeah, you see it as, like,
- 4:44Speaker 1: if I just ran into Rachel Trash, I'd be like, hey,
- 4:46Speaker 1: what's up?
- 4:48Speaker 3: You just.
- 4:49Speaker 1: It's a knowing thing, you all, yeah. Actually, I have
- 4:52Speaker 1: met Rachel Trash, and that's exactly what happened. Oh, really?
- 4:54Speaker 1: Because it's Sundance.
- 4:56Speaker 8: Ah!
- 4:56Speaker 1: Like, hey, oh my God!
- 4:58Speaker 3: Ah!
- 4:58Speaker 1: Can you believe that place? Jesus. Ten minutes in, you realize,
- 5:01Speaker 1: we've never met. Wow.
- 5:05Speaker 8: Well, then you created Last Comic Standing. That's kind of huge,
- 5:09Speaker 8: or at least in the beginning.
- 5:10Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Well, I like the comics in the house.
- 5:13Speaker 5: I stopped hosting when the, that was a big mistake,
- 5:17Speaker 5: tactical error on my part.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I should have just written it out.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Yeah. That's when I didn't realize keeping it real was
- 5:23Speaker 5: real wrong. ride the money train until it crashes into
- 5:27Speaker 5: the center of the sun.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Did they keep you on as producer.
- 5:30Speaker 5: As it went on it's kind of you can't get
- 5:32Speaker 5: rid of the creator yeah uh capital i mean god that's.
- 5:38Speaker 9: How you build yourself before abraham i am uh yeah
- 5:43Speaker 9: so i you know i still got some dough but
- 5:47Speaker 9: what i would have liked to i if i had
- 5:49Speaker 9: to do it over again i would have stayed on
- 5:50Speaker 9: to host but.
- 5:53Speaker 5: I probably would have made enemies because I would have
- 5:54Speaker 5: complained all the time that we were just doing evening
- 5:56Speaker 5: at the improv.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Because at that point, it's just star search. You just
- 5:59Speaker 1: keep introducing comics. And I really loved when the comics
- 6:02Speaker 1: were in the house. But I thought this was a
- 6:04Speaker 1: movie podcast. Well, you know, I'm just giving people history
- 6:06Speaker 1: on you. I mean, you've done plenty of movies, too.
- 6:09Speaker 8: Everything from Jerry Maguire to you just did, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 8: Hereafter with Clint Eastwood.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I did a real small part in Burt Wonderstone, the
- 6:18Speaker 1: Steve Carell, Jim Carrey movie. And that was so.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Fun and real that was a real big moment.
- 6:27Speaker 5: It's a i mean it's a small part but uh
- 6:31Speaker 5: i play rick the improbable we're all like uh bad
- 6:36Speaker 5: magicians oh no i'm like the word like even my
- 6:38Speaker 5: name is awful but it was weird in a great
- 6:44Speaker 5: way to be on a set and when you realize
- 6:46Speaker 5: i'm ad-libbing with steve carell Because you're used to doing
- 6:50Speaker 5: it your way, when you ad-lib, and then somebody like
- 6:52Speaker 5: Steve Carell ad-libs in a completely different.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Uses different math.
- 6:58Speaker 5: And then it becomes like the Winchester Mystery House, where
- 7:01Speaker 5: you're just going up stairways you didn't even know you had,
- 7:03Speaker 5: and you're opening weird doors and stuff, and really playing,
- 7:08Speaker 5: you know, shaping and moving and fun.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey, It was really fun.
- 7:17Speaker 5: I can't stress enough how small it was, but I
- 7:22Speaker 5: also can't stress enough how enormous an experience it was.
- 7:26Speaker 5: That should be funny, but it is just the right
- 7:30Speaker 5: amount of perfect to fail. What could go wrong?
- 7:34Speaker 1: It could be Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, James Gandolfini. Sometimes
- 7:40Speaker 1: those perfect scenarios.
- 7:41Speaker 3: All fall apart.
- 7:42Speaker 1: It's all magicians. Sometimes it's so good it becomes heat. Terrible.
- 7:50Speaker 5: Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi are like Siegfried and Roy.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Like old school guys with the jumpsuits and crazy hair.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Straight, though.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And then Jim Carrey is.
- 8:01Speaker 5: Like David Blaine. He comes and lets audience members punch
- 8:04Speaker 5: him in the face. He pulls their card out of
- 8:06Speaker 5: his wound.
- 8:07Speaker 1: That sounds really good.
- 8:09Speaker 5: Then it becomes like Breakin'. Where they have to have
- 8:11Speaker 5: like a magic competition to save like the rec center.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Save the rec center.
- 8:16Speaker 1: It's like old school magic versus new school magic. And
- 8:20Speaker 1: they have to reunite.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:22Speaker 10: I actually belong to a magician's union in my hometown
- 8:26Speaker 10: that met up over the JCPenney. I think I still
- 8:29Speaker 10: get letters from them.
- 8:31Speaker 1: There is a union for magicians? It was like a club,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and all these guys would go there. And I was like.
- 8:36Speaker 10: Maybe 11, and I would go. And all these guys
- 8:39Speaker 10: would do magic, and they were really good. And then
- 8:41Speaker 10: they would have guest magicians like the Frito-Lay magician.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I remember him coming. And he's buried over in Cape
- 8:49Speaker 1: Hill Cemetery. There's a statue of him. That statue is amazing.
- 8:52Speaker 5: That's huge.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Why does he have a statue? He had a lot
- 8:56Speaker 1: of money to buy... He could afford a statue.
- 8:57Speaker 5: And Frito-Lay, like, the company?
- 8:59Speaker 1: Yeah, he was a magician for Frito-Lay. And he would
- 9:02Speaker 1: go out and sort of advertise... Children's hospitals and stuff. Yeah.
- 9:07Speaker 1: And he was really good. I like to think he
- 9:09Speaker 1: was Mexican and his name was Frito.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Yeah, Frito.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Frito Bandito, the magician. They're bringing that back now. Well,
- 9:16Speaker 1: thanks for having me. I like talking about movies. Definitely.
- 9:19Speaker 1: What made you guys decide to do a whole movie podcast?
- 9:23Speaker 8: Ongoing obsession of mine that's uh yeah that's and that's
- 9:27Speaker 8: kind of what i was going to go into with
- 9:28Speaker 8: you i mean that was sort of mine i've sort
- 9:30Speaker 8: of tried to backtrack over the years and figure out
- 9:33Speaker 8: what exactly made me love movies and then what made
- 9:37Speaker 8: me love them so much i guess i needed to
- 9:39Speaker 8: center a whole show around it but um which i've
- 9:42Speaker 8: come up with different theories but um I was going
- 9:45Speaker 8: to go into, I mean, you've got a lot of other,
- 9:47Speaker 8: you know, you've got stand-up and you've got, you know,
- 9:49Speaker 8: the movies and TV. What was it that made you
- 9:52Speaker 8: want to do a podcast? Because now you've started your
- 9:54Speaker 8: own podcast.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Well, it's all, I'm an egomaniac. So it's all, you know,
- 9:59Speaker 5: how do I sell more tickets? at my shows and
- 10:01Speaker 5: how do I get more people to pay attention to
- 10:02Speaker 5: me I know I'll be on their computer I'm going
- 10:07Speaker 5: to tell you names of movies and you say overrated
- 10:09Speaker 5: underrated or push okay okay Godfather 2 push Who asked you?
- 10:20Speaker 5: You did.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Or were you talking to him?
- 10:23Speaker 5: I was talking to him.
- 10:24Speaker 1: All right, Push.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Push?
- 10:27Speaker 1: I think Push is the way to go on that one. Fred? Yeah, Push.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Godfather 1.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Say it. Just be a man and say it.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Overrated?
- 10:37Speaker 1: It is. But you got James Caan, so it saves
- 10:41Speaker 1: you a little bit. The World's Greatest also ran.
- 10:45Speaker 5: Goodfellas.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Underrated. Inexplicably underrated. Forgotten about these days.
- 10:55Speaker 10: You know, they never answer that, but they raise that
- 10:58Speaker 10: question in The Sopranos and never answer it.
- 11:02Speaker 1: It's that priest, what's her name's priest? Carmela's priest. Paul Schultz.
- 11:07Speaker 10: Yeah, he, in one of the early episodes, he says, well,
- 11:11Speaker 10: what does Tony think about Goodfellas?
- 11:13Speaker 1: How does he rank Goodfellas? They never, they just leave
- 11:16Speaker 1: it hanging. That's how they left the whole show hanging
- 11:18Speaker 1: at the end, right? Yeah. Goodfellas seems to be.
- 11:23Speaker 5: People go, how can it be underrated? It's the best.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I'm like, well, that's... It's underrated the way the Beatles
- 11:28Speaker 1: are underrated.
- 11:28Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 11:29Speaker 1: You think you got it all figured out.
- 11:31Speaker 5: And you're the baseline and you never give.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Me your money and go, oh, wait a minute. I
- 11:35Speaker 1: have to listen to this all over again.
- 11:37Speaker 8: I think it's gotten forgotten these days. It was so
- 11:40Speaker 8: huge in the 90s.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Way overrated. Massively overrated. It's horrible. It's just funny that
- 11:49Speaker 1: people even talk about it.
- 11:51Speaker 5: I've said that Scarface is to rappers what Goodfellas is
- 11:54Speaker 5: to comedians.
- 11:55Speaker 1: That's about right, actually. That's not bad.
- 12:00Speaker 8: Yeah, I think it's just made to sell posters and
- 12:03Speaker 8: trend items at this point. T-shirts and And most of
- 12:06Speaker 8: the kids wearing the Scarface stuff have never seen Scarface.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I would like to make Scarface from the rapper. T-shirts
- 12:13Speaker 1: of him.
- 12:15Speaker 8: You probably could sell that. He's underrated. That's how it goes.
- 12:21Speaker 1: To be cool. They ought to remake it with Steve Carell.
- 12:27Speaker 1: That'd be just as ridiculous.
- 12:31Speaker 5: Her womb is polluted. What?
- 12:35Speaker 1: Who I trust?
- 12:36Speaker 5: Nobody.
- 12:36Speaker 1: That's who. I can kind of see him doing it.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I mean, Admiral Abraham is a human. Yeah, what could
- 12:42Speaker 1: go wrong? I can see him doing this, yeah.
- 12:46Speaker 5: More games?
- 12:48Speaker 1: No, it's the pauses that make the podcast. I just
- 12:53Speaker 1: didn't know if we had more.
- 12:53Speaker 5: To go through.
- 12:54Speaker 1: No, I'm all out.
- 12:56Speaker 12: Okay.
- 12:58Speaker 8: Oh, man.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Well, do we want to get into the movie? We
- 13:03Speaker 1: can head into the big movie discussion. I'll do whatever
- 13:05Speaker 1: you need to do.
- 13:06Speaker 3: All right.
- 13:07Speaker 5: I'm your guest.
- 13:07Speaker 8: We will take a break, and then we will come
- 13:09Speaker 8: back with the movie.
- 13:32Speaker 11: Alright.
- 13:35Speaker 1: You can't stand it. I know you can't stand it.
- 13:38Speaker 1: You can't stand the heat. You can't stand the heat.
- 14:02Speaker 7: Just be cool, stop acting like a fool, cause.
- 14:06Speaker 13: I know it is the weather.
- 14:09Speaker 3: And now, before the next show starts, let's.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Enjoy an intermission.
- 14:14Speaker 4: You'll find our snack bar chock full of good things
- 14:17Speaker 4: to eat and drink. Tasty, tempting hot dogs, thirst-quenching soft drinks, fresh,
- 14:23Speaker 4: crunchy popcorn, a complete assortment of delicious candy, and a
- 14:28Speaker 4: full line of cigarettes. You've plenty of time, so visit
- 14:32Speaker 4: the snack bar now. A tasty treat will double your
- 14:35Speaker 4: enjoyment of the show. For your convenience, we shall keep
- 14:39Speaker 4: you informed of the remaining intermission time, three minutes before
- 14:42Speaker 4: the next show starts.
- 14:47Speaker 14: In 1967, Oliver Stone was a combat infantryman in Vietnam.
- 14:50Speaker 14: He was wounded twice and received a medal for gallantry
- 14:53Speaker 14: in action. Ten years later, he was a Hollywood screenwriter.
- 14:57Speaker 3: And the winner of an Oscar.
- 14:58Speaker 14: But even after many successes, Stone still had another story
- 15:02Speaker 14: to tell. A movie that grew out of his own experience,
- 15:06Speaker 14: Stone has come a long way from.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Vietnam, but he has not left it behind. Out of
- 15:12Speaker 3: the hole! Fire!
- 15:14Speaker 7: Take the pain.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Take the pain!
- 15:16Speaker 1: I got a bad feeling on this one, all right?
- 15:18Speaker 3: Watch out! Rockets!
- 15:40Speaker 14: The first real casualty of war is innocence. The first
- 15:44Speaker 14: real movie about the war in Vietnam is Platoon.

- 17:34Speaker 13: One flash of light.
- 17:40Speaker 5: That's part of your problem, you know.
- 17:41Speaker 3: You haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are
- 17:44Speaker 3: answered in the movies. And now, on with the show.
- 17:51Speaker 1: W-E-L-O-V-E 1-0-8.
- 17:57Speaker 12: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 18:03Speaker 5: Yo, Mook!
- 18:04Speaker 3: Mook! What?
- 18:04Speaker 5: How come you got no brothers up on the wall? Man,
- 18:10Speaker 5: ask Sal, right?
- 18:12Speaker 1: Hey, Sal, how come you got no brothers up on
- 18:13Speaker 1: the wall here? You want brothers on the wall? Get
- 18:15Speaker 1: your own place. You can do what you want to do.
- 18:18Speaker 4: You can put your brothers and uncles and nieces and nephews,
- 18:21Speaker 4: your stepfather, stepmother, whoever you want.
- 18:23Speaker 1: See? But this is my pizzeria.
- 18:27Speaker 5: American Italians on the wall only.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Take it easy, man.
- 18:29Speaker 3: I'm you.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Hey, don't start with me today.
- 18:32Speaker 12: What?
- 18:34Speaker 1: Yeah, that might be fine, Sal, but you own this.
- 18:38Speaker 8: Rarely do I see any American Italians eating in here.
- 18:41Speaker 5: All I see is black folks.
- 18:43Speaker 2: So since we spend much money here, we do have
- 18:46Speaker 2: some sex.
- 18:48Speaker 5: You looking for trouble?
- 18:49Speaker 1: Are you a troublemaker? Is that what you want? You
- 18:52Speaker 1: making trouble?
- 18:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm a troublemaker. I'm making trouble.
- 19:05Speaker 7: Another summer Sound of the funky drummer Music hitting your
- 19:09Speaker 7: heart I know you got soul Listen if you're missing
- 19:14Speaker 7: y'all Swinging while I'm singing Giving what you're getting Knowing
- 19:18Speaker 7: what I'm knowing While the black band's sweating In the
- 19:22Speaker 7: rhythm I'm rolling Gotta give us what we want Gotta
- 19:25Speaker 7: give us what we need Our freedom of speech Is
- 19:28Speaker 7: freedom of death We got to fight.
- 19:30Speaker 1: The powers that be Fight the power.
- 19:35Speaker 11: Fight the power.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Fight the power.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Fight the power.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Fight the power. Fight the power.
- 19:46Speaker 13: Fight the power.
- 19:46Speaker 6: We've got to fight the power.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Let's beat it.
- 19:50Speaker 5: The power!
- 19:50Speaker 7: Fight the power! Fight the power!
- 19:52Speaker 3: Fight the power! Fight the power!
- 19:54Speaker 7: Fight the power! From the heart it's the start of
- 20:01Speaker 7: work of our two revolutionized Make a change, nothing strange People, people,
- 20:05Speaker 7: we all the same No we're not the same, cause
- 20:07Speaker 7: we don't know the game What we need is awareness,
- 20:10Speaker 7: we can't get careless You say, what is this? My beloved,
- 20:15Speaker 7: let's get down.
- 20:16Speaker 16: To business Mental self-defense or fitness?
- 20:18Speaker 1: Don't let this show.
- 20:19Speaker 7: You got to tell me what you know To make
- 20:23Speaker 7: everybody see In order to fight the powers that be.
- 20:27Speaker 16: Fight the power.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Fight the power!
- 20:32Speaker 13: Fight the power! Fight the power!
- 20:36Speaker 17: Fight the power!
- 20:39Speaker 3: Fight the power!
- 20:41Speaker 13: Fight the power!
- 20:42Speaker 14: We're back to fight the power.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Of the beast!
- 20:47Speaker 1: Alright, so we're back with Movie Meltdown Sofa Theater.
- 20:50Speaker 8: This week's Sofa Theater feature is Do the Right Thing,
- 20:53Speaker 8: The Year is 1989, Director Spike Lee, and the plot,
- 20:56Speaker 8: according to IMDb, On the hottest day of the year
- 20:59Speaker 8: on a street.
- 21:00Speaker 1: In the Bedford... Stuyvesant. Stuyvesant. There you go. You're from
- 21:04Speaker 1: the neighborhood, right? You're New Jersey. Bed-Stuy. Bed-Stuy. The Bed-Stuy
- 21:09Speaker 1: section of Brooklyn.
- 21:10Speaker 8: Everyone's hate and bigotry smolders and builds until it explodes
- 21:13Speaker 8: into violence.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Spoiler alert. You've had since 89, so get to work
- 21:17Speaker 1: on this one.
- 21:17Speaker 12: What's up?
- 21:19Speaker 1: All right.
- 21:19Speaker 8: I'd say, where do you want to begin? But, I mean,
- 21:21Speaker 8: you've got Rosie dancing right there. So I guess from
- 21:23Speaker 8: that point, we'll get into it.
- 21:24Speaker 5: It's an excruciatingly long opening credit. Spike Lee must have
- 21:28Speaker 5: been madly in love.
- 21:29Speaker 1: With Rosie Perez.
- 21:30Speaker 5: I think so. Because there's really no reason for Rosie
- 21:32Speaker 5: Perez to do that absurd dance to the entire song,
- 21:36Speaker 5: the remixed long version of Fight the Power, with boxing
- 21:40Speaker 5: gloves on.
- 21:40Speaker 1: I think the beginning, it's entertaining. And then by the
- 21:43Speaker 1: time she's doing the weird stomach dance, I mean, if
- 21:46Speaker 1: it was just like a.
- 21:48Speaker 5: I mean, it could have just been camera shots through
- 21:52Speaker 5: the neighborhood to fight the power.
- 21:54Speaker 1: But no.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Because fight the power is hard to beat. Yeah, definitely.
- 21:58Speaker 5: As far as a great opening. Opening credits are a
- 22:01Speaker 5: tricky thing. I loathe them. I really need you to put.
- 22:08Speaker 1: A piece of the movie in the opening credits.
- 22:11Speaker 5: Because if you just show me a babbling brook, And
- 22:14Speaker 5: two and a half minutes of like second unit director.
- 22:17Speaker 5: I'm out.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I hate it.
- 22:19Speaker 8: I like when you get either the credit sequence or
- 22:21Speaker 8: the pre-credit sequence that's.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Kind of like its own little mini movie kind of thing.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Those are awesome. That's the best way to go about it.
- 22:29Speaker 5: I like a little cold open of acting things. And
- 22:33Speaker 5: then something that makes me, that ends with me going, whoa, okay.
- 22:38Speaker 5: And then a song and credits as we're moving around
- 22:41Speaker 5: through to where one of those people I just saw live.
- 22:44Speaker 1: But Do the Right Thing, it's Rosie Perez dancing.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Like a fool. And for the entire song.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Her outfit keeps changing. Just in mid-frame. It's so terrible.
- 22:57Speaker 1: It's so.
- 22:58Speaker 5: And boxing gloves and... Yeah.
- 23:03Speaker 1: But you know what?
- 23:04Speaker 5: As I'm sitting here talking about it, maybe... I think
- 23:08Speaker 5: it's a movie.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Spike Lee made perfectly by accident.
- 23:11Speaker 5: Because he hasn't really hit one out of the park
- 23:14Speaker 5: like that before since Inside Man was really great and
- 23:18Speaker 5: I like Summer of Sam but it's so in my
- 23:22Speaker 5: opinion Do the.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Right Thing is perfect and now I'm sitting here talking.
- 23:25Speaker 5: About it I get annoyed the annoyance I'm feeling about
- 23:29Speaker 5: Rosie Perez is the annoyance everyone feels about each other
- 23:32Speaker 5: at the beginning like everyone's all through the movie everyone's
- 23:35Speaker 5: on each other's nerves because it's so hot.
- 23:38Speaker 1: And I'm like I'm off with the dancing but I
- 23:40Speaker 1: don't think he did it on purpose And we'll get
- 23:42Speaker 1: to more of that later.
- 23:43Speaker 5: Because Act 3, the big, giant turning point of the movie,
- 23:47Speaker 5: there's no way he did that on purpose.
- 23:50Speaker 1: But it's amazing how it pans out. Anyway, I guess
- 23:53Speaker 1: we'll get to that later.
- 23:54Speaker 5: It's really like, he did, it's very NYU film school. Like,
- 23:58Speaker 5: there's a lot of shots for shots' sake. A lot
- 24:03Speaker 5: of weird, like, the side of the building just happens
- 24:05Speaker 5: to be lit bright orange. That's just how weird the
- 24:08Speaker 5: sun was that day.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Like, well... I don't know.
- 24:11Speaker 8: I like the visual representation throughout it because it's so consistent.
- 24:17Speaker 8: It's always this overly colored, and everything has a red, orange, yellow.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I mean, it's playing on that.
- 24:24Speaker 18: Hot thing, and you do kind of get that feeling.
- 24:28Speaker 18: It does play that it's coming through. Sometimes it has
- 24:31Speaker 18: that quality like people who paint with acrylics. Probably to
- 24:35Speaker 18: heat it up a little. Mixed with Sesame Street.
- 24:38Speaker 5: When Ruby Dee is in her window, I expect the
- 24:41Speaker 5: Deedlebugs to be.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Singing underneath her.
- 24:43Speaker 5: I was hoping Oscar would come out of that trash can.
- 24:46Speaker 5: I love Ozzie Davis as the homeless guy. He's great.
- 24:50Speaker 1: The mayor. You asking a lot, asking a man that
- 24:53Speaker 1: changes malt liquor? That's the mayor. Drunk ass. He's pretty impressive.
- 25:00Speaker 8: It's one of those going back and re-watching, I think
- 25:02Speaker 8: I'd forgotten how good he was.
- 25:05Speaker 5: He's so great in Jungle Fever as the super Christian
- 25:08Speaker 5: father of Samuel Jackson, the crackhead.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Spoiler alert, you know what? If you haven't seen these movies,
- 25:14Speaker 1: then you shouldn't be listening to this podcast. When he
- 25:17Speaker 1: finally shoots his own son. It's so biblical and so great.
- 25:20Speaker 1: And the way Spike Lee shot that house in Harlem,
- 25:23Speaker 1: the inside of Ruby Dee?
- 25:26Speaker 5: And Ozzie Davis, the inside of their house is so
- 25:31Speaker 5: incredibly shot.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Anyway. Ruby Dee is mother's sister.
- 25:35Speaker 5: Yeah, mother's sister is Ruby Dee and Ozzie Davis, just
- 25:38Speaker 5: the whole movie just tries to get her to go
- 25:40Speaker 5: on a date.
- 25:41Speaker 1: She's just a drunken bum walking around the neighborhood in
- 25:44Speaker 1: a suit.
- 25:44Speaker 5: But holding on to that last bit of dignity and
- 25:48Speaker 5: Ozzie Davis, the only guy alive that could play that.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Part and still have an eyelash of class. Like you go,
- 25:56Speaker 1: That guy was classy. He plays it that way.
- 25:58Speaker 8: Because he almost ends up being our real main character.
- 26:02Speaker 8: He's there equally as much as we're following the story.
- 26:05Speaker 8: And as it goes on, you really start to like him,
- 26:08Speaker 8: where I think I have issues with Spike. As the
- 26:11Speaker 8: story goes on, his character kind of comes into question,
- 26:14Speaker 8: whereas Ozzy's gets better and better.
- 26:16Speaker 1: His character comes into question right away.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:19Speaker 1: He, like, wakes up his sister messing with her eyeballs
- 26:22Speaker 1: with his bad breath. He's just a jerk. On the
- 26:24Speaker 1: only day she can sleep late. He's a jerk. What's
- 26:28Speaker 1: the matter with you? Yeah, Mookie seems to be a
- 26:29Speaker 1: bit of a creep.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it just really puts me off.
- 26:33Speaker 5: And he, um.
- 26:35Speaker 5: Yeah, Spike.
- 26:38Speaker 5: Casting yourself is not.
- 26:40Speaker 1: And this goes for, like, Woody Allen, too. Well, not
- 26:43Speaker 1: in Annie Hall, not in The Greats, but, like.
- 26:45Speaker 5: now it's like you know what i don't need to
- 26:48Speaker 5: see quentin tarantino and quentin tarantino like it's your movie
- 26:51Speaker 5: dude you're good i got you you're in charge of
- 26:54Speaker 5: the whole.
- 26:55Speaker 8: Thing it was funny when it was mr brown because
- 26:57Speaker 8: you had like two lines yeah by pulp fiction like
- 26:59Speaker 8: okay really you couldn't have found anybody else for this
- 27:01Speaker 8: part exactly uh it's a little ego spike drew.
- 27:05Speaker 5: A thing it's okay it's okay but by the time
- 27:09Speaker 5: you get the clockers you're like you've got to be
- 27:11Speaker 5: kidding me dude because that was one of the greatest
- 27:13Speaker 5: books i ever read And then I saw the movie
- 27:15Speaker 5: and went home. Because I'm pretty sure Scorsese and Spike
- 27:20Speaker 5: Lee fought for clockers.
- 27:22Speaker 1: And you go, oh my God, if Scorsese did clockers,
- 27:26Speaker 1: lights out.
- 27:27Speaker 19: Lights out, man. Spike has the opening and he bookends
- 27:32Speaker 19: the movie with himself. Anyway, so we do the right thing.
- 27:35Speaker 19: Rosie Perez and then Spike Lee bothers his.
- 27:40Speaker 5: Sister by poking her eye.
- 27:42Speaker 1: She goes, your breath stinks. And he goes, it's your
- 27:43Speaker 1: upper lip.
- 27:45Speaker 8: That's funny because their relationship plays so well and then
- 27:48Speaker 8: you realize why it plays so well.
- 27:50Speaker 1: That is his sister.
- 27:50Speaker 5: Jay, I think her name is, right?
- 27:53Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Jay Lee?
- 27:55Speaker 5: Yeah. There's a great scene where Danny Aiello, the owner
- 28:00Speaker 5: of the pizzeria, and do the right thing. It's just
- 28:03Speaker 5: so nice to Spike's sister. Danny Aiello was nominated for
- 28:08Speaker 5: Best Supporting Actor. When I watched the movie, I didn't
- 28:11Speaker 5: get a feeling like he was hitting on Spike Lee's sister. Really?
- 28:16Speaker 3: You did?
- 28:17Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. Okay.
- 28:18Speaker 1: He goes, hey, you know what?
- 28:19Speaker 5: She goes, I'll just have a slice.
- 28:20Speaker 1: He goes, hey, you know what?
- 28:22Speaker 5: I'm going to make you something really nice.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I'm going to make you a slice.
- 28:25Speaker 5: I'm going to make you something really special, all right?
- 28:27Speaker 5: You sit down, and I'm going to make you a
- 28:30Speaker 5: real nice slice. So, like, that's his, he's such, like,
- 28:35Speaker 5: blue collar, like, awful blue collar. Like, his way of, like,
- 28:39Speaker 5: really wooing a chick is, I'm going to put some
- 28:41Speaker 5: meat on your thigh.
- 28:43Speaker 8: I'm going to double the cheese and not charge you $ 2.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Now, you know what? Then you cheaps out.
- 28:48Speaker 5: And then Spike Lee goes, you can fire me right
- 28:51Speaker 5: fucking now.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Because he thinks he's sitting on his sister.
- 28:55Speaker 8: I think there's a little of that.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Now, yeah, let's get the best comeback line. He goes,
- 29:00Speaker 1: you know what, Mookie? Not for nothing. But if you
- 29:04Speaker 1: were just a little bit taller, I'd kick you right
- 29:07Speaker 1: in your fucking ass for what you're thinking. If you
- 29:10Speaker 1: were taller.
- 29:11Speaker 5: How great is that?
- 29:13Speaker 1: If you were just a little bit taller. And Danny
- 29:15Speaker 1: Aiello could pull that stuff off.
- 29:17Speaker 5: He was incredible in that movie.
- 29:19Speaker 1: I just killed your fucking radio.
- 29:23Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, he can play both, and that's worked
- 29:27Speaker 8: so well with this, because this movie kind of makes
- 29:30Speaker 8: everybody skate the line of what side do you fall on,
- 29:36Speaker 8: and who's, you know, especially once you get into the
- 29:38Speaker 8: racial stuff, and who's being.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Kind of racist. It's a racial, it's which side are
- 29:44Speaker 1: you on. And Richard Epson straddles the line.
- 29:47Speaker 5: He's friends with Mookie. And John Turturro is so far
- 29:52Speaker 5: over to the racist side. And Danny Aiello, you think,
- 29:55Speaker 5: is on the black side.
- 29:58Speaker 1: And to some extent he is.
- 30:00Speaker 5: I always thought he was. That's where I think the
- 30:02Speaker 5: mistake that Spike made, thank God he made it because
- 30:06Speaker 5: he made it a great film, comes in because when
- 30:09Speaker 5: John Turturro goes, my friends, they make fun of me,
- 30:11Speaker 5: they go, go serve pizza to the movies, go ahead.
- 30:14Speaker 1: And then Danny Aiello sits her down and goes, do.
- 30:16Speaker 5: You friends put food on your table, clothing on your back?
- 30:21Speaker 1: They're not your friends, Pino. And then Danny Aiello said
- 30:24Speaker 1: that really sweet thing where he goes, these kids.
- 30:27Speaker 5: They grew up on my food.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's really nice.
- 30:30Speaker 5: It's really sweet.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Like, I saw them when they were kids, people.
- 30:34Speaker 5: They grew up on my food. So it is weird
- 30:37Speaker 5: when they're on a hill towards the end of the movie,
- 30:39Speaker 5: just takes that crazy-ass turn, drops hand bombs on everybody.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I think it's just both.
- 30:44Speaker 8: I think he's kind of like that, and he has that,
- 30:47Speaker 8: if nothing else, he has that pride. And it's that
- 30:49Speaker 8: pride in ownership that he has in the business, and
- 30:51Speaker 8: it's pride that he did kind of help to raise
- 30:54Speaker 8: this whole neighborhood.
- 30:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:56Speaker 1: But he's also kind of old school. He's just like
- 30:58Speaker 1: a no-nonsense kind of guy.
- 30:59Speaker 8: So anytime somebody pushes him along those lines of, you
- 31:03Speaker 8: don't tell me what to do with my business, you
- 31:04Speaker 8: don't tell me what to do with my family kind
- 31:06Speaker 8: of thing.
- 31:07Speaker 5: He lets Ozzie Davis sweep up the front walk and
- 31:09Speaker 5: pays him. Because it's the way it was.
- 31:12Speaker 13: Every day.
- 31:13Speaker 5: It doesn't need to be swept. And I think it's,
- 31:15Speaker 5: John Turturro goes, every day there's Azu Pep. I still
- 31:18Speaker 5: don't know what Azu Pep means.
- 31:19Speaker 1: I think he made up half those terms.
- 31:20Speaker 5: And then Spike Lee goes, Azu Pep.
- 31:23Speaker 1: And he goes, Azu Pep.
- 31:24Speaker 5: Every day he lets his Azu Pep sweep up the walk.
- 31:28Speaker 5: And then he goes, hey, the mayor's a good man.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I think that's it. He's just kind of old school.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Azu Pep.
- 31:35Speaker 1: He remembers like the way that things used to work.
- 31:37Speaker 1: And I tried to look it up, but I don't
- 31:39Speaker 1: know how you spell it. I just like Spike Lee
- 31:42Speaker 1: going in his face. He also, is it the right
- 31:46Speaker 1: thing when he goes, why don't you talk a little?
- 31:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:48Speaker 5: He goes, why don't you talk a little brother talk
- 31:51Speaker 5: to him?
- 31:53Speaker 1: Brother talk.
- 31:54Speaker 5: It's like anything racial that John Turturro's called on in
- 31:58Speaker 5: the movie.
- 31:58Speaker 1: He repeats to the person's face louder. Like you heard
- 32:02Speaker 1: me brother talk.
- 32:04Speaker 17: Brother talk.
- 32:04Speaker 5: He goes, why don't you go talk a little brother
- 32:06Speaker 5: talk to him?
- 32:06Speaker 1: Brother talk, brother talk. They have that great line on
- 32:09Speaker 1: the cigarette machine.
- 32:10Speaker 5: Remember cigarette machines?
- 32:12Speaker 1: We don't have those now? He goes, who's your favorite
- 32:14Speaker 1: basketball player?
- 32:14Speaker 5: He goes, Michael Jordan. He goes, who's your favorite actor?
- 32:17Speaker 5: He goes, Eddie Murphy.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Spike Lee says to John Turturro, who's your favorite singer?
- 32:22Speaker 5: He goes, Bruce. He goes, no, it's Prince. He goes, Bruce.
- 32:25Speaker 3: He goes, it's Prince.
- 32:26Speaker 5: He goes, Bruce.
- 32:26Speaker 1: He goes, it doesn't matter. He goes, excuse my language
- 32:31Speaker 1: on this one for real. My niece's hair. This is
- 32:33Speaker 1: the wife. She goes, you keep making fun of niggas, Pino.
- 32:37Speaker 1: But all your heroes are niggas. He goes, but they're not.
- 32:41Speaker 1: They're different.
- 32:42Speaker 5: Michael Jordan, he's different.
- 32:43Speaker 1: He's not like that.
- 32:44Speaker 5: They're different.
- 32:45Speaker 1: And he goes, you know what? Your hair's kinkier than mine, Pino.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Maybe you're black.
- 32:50Speaker 5: And John Turturro goes, hey, fuck you and fuck Michael Jackson.
- 32:56Speaker 1: And then Spike Lee says, fuck you and fuck Frank Sinatra.
- 33:01Speaker 1: And then John Turturro goes, hey, watch it.
- 33:06Speaker 5: Like the sacred cat, like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Not so nice. I'm wondering how many times you've seen
- 33:11Speaker 1: this movie.
- 33:11Speaker 5: You seem to have this script memorized.
- 33:13Speaker 1: It seems like you can do this movie. Yeah. It's
- 33:16Speaker 1: my one-man show.
- 33:17Speaker 5: That's why I picked it.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Jay Moore does the right thing. Yeah. Hey, Sam, how
- 33:22Speaker 1: come you got no pictures of brothers on the wall?
- 33:24Speaker 1: You want brothers on the wall?
- 33:25Speaker 13: Open your own.
- 33:26Speaker 1: I heard you have a reservoir dog somewhere. Open your
- 33:29Speaker 1: own pizzeria. You could put brothers, you could put your
- 33:32Speaker 1: fucking uncles.
- 33:33Speaker 10: Did you actually do the whole movie of Reservoir Dogs,
- 33:36Speaker 10: just the audio track?
- 33:38Speaker 5: No, somebody on YouTube put up me doing Reservoir Dogs,
- 33:42Speaker 5: and I just did all the different impressions, and somebody
- 33:46Speaker 5: inlaid photos of all the people.
- 33:49Speaker 1: It's really funny.
- 33:50Speaker 5: Not me, I'm not saying I, but the fact that somebody.
- 33:54Speaker 1: pulled me.
- 33:54Speaker 5: Doing it from the op and anthony radio show and
- 33:57Speaker 5: put it up on youtube it's really.
- 33:58Speaker 20: Larry i don't care how mad you are at me
- 34:00Speaker 20: that's not half as mad as daddy's gonna be at
- 34:02Speaker 20: us look you if you torture that guy enough he'll
- 34:08Speaker 20: say he's starting a chicago fire that don't mean it's fucking.
- 34:11Speaker 1: True true he's a good kid.
- 34:16Speaker 5: You got shot in the gut. All right.
- 34:21Speaker 1: We're starting the Chris Payne animated show and you're taking over.
- 34:24Speaker 1: It's too loud an impression. Blow out your mic. Your
- 34:27Speaker 1: Yamaha mics. Oh, wow. I don't know.
- 34:30Speaker 8: That's something I've always kind of thought in society and
- 34:33Speaker 8: why people are so weird about that.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Because by the time we got... What do you mean
- 34:37Speaker 1: by that? Well, having that double standard.
- 34:41Speaker 8: I always thought that once entertainment got involved and it's like,
- 34:44Speaker 8: We had all these people back in the 40s and
- 34:46Speaker 8: into the 50s, throughout the years, but at that point
- 34:49Speaker 8: where you had the entertainers would be able to play
- 34:52Speaker 8: in these clubs, but it was nothing but white people.
- 34:55Speaker 8: They'd bring them in through the back door, they'd come
- 34:57Speaker 8: up on stage and perform for all the white people,
- 34:59Speaker 8: and then they'd go back out through the kitchen. I'm like,
- 35:02Speaker 8: why are they okay to perform for you? Why can't
- 35:05Speaker 8: you sit there and clap for them because you think
- 35:07Speaker 8: they're so amazing as a performer, but they can't drink
- 35:10Speaker 8: out of the same water fountain as you?
- 35:11Speaker 1: That's always been ridiculous.
- 35:14Speaker 5: Being black really must be like living in the twilight
- 35:17Speaker 5: zone in America. It's something that, you know, we're always
- 35:25Speaker 5: going to be on the outside looking in. We could
- 35:28Speaker 5: not possibly have any idea of the ridiculousness of difficulty.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Like, just to be judged from across the street. We
- 35:36Speaker 1: have no idea what that's like.
- 35:39Speaker 5: But do the right thing.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Robin Harris was in Do the Right Thing, one of
- 35:41Speaker 1: the greatest comedians that ever lived. is entertaining. And half
- 35:45Speaker 1: the best lines come from him.
- 35:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:47Speaker 5: And what's great about Do The Right Thing is suddenly
- 35:50Speaker 5: now there's tension between the blacks and the Koreans.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:53Speaker 5: And they're fighting amongst each other. And the whole, it
- 35:57Speaker 5: just all comes up to like the end of that
- 35:59Speaker 5: hottest day. Like there's your super racist John Turturro. Your super,
- 36:05Speaker 5: these kids grew up on my food, father figure in
- 36:07Speaker 5: Danny Aiello. Then there's your clowns, like your Greek chorus.
- 36:12Speaker 5: There's Robin Harris and the two other guys, the Haitian
- 36:14Speaker 5: guy and the other guy.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, one of them is the police chief from
- 36:18Speaker 1: The Wire.
- 36:19Speaker 3: Yeah. That guy.
- 36:21Speaker 5: And then there's the Korean guy, so there's the interloper. Somehow,
- 36:25Speaker 5: like Daniel Yellow, at least, you know, I built this
- 36:27Speaker 5: place with my bare hands. Now there's the Korean across
- 36:29Speaker 5: the street. And there's this weird soup. Everybody's forced to
- 36:33Speaker 5: live together.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Radio Raheem's blasting his music all the time.
- 36:36Speaker 5: And then at the end of the movie... It all
- 36:38Speaker 5: just goes, it literally goes up in flames. But I
- 36:41Speaker 5: don't think, when you watch the movie, Danny Aiello smashes
- 36:48Speaker 5: Bill Nunn's boom box in with.
- 36:51Speaker 1: A baseball bat.
- 36:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:52Speaker 1: And says, I just killed your fucking radio. And then
- 36:55Speaker 1: drops N-bomb, N-bomb, N-bomb, N-bomb. And then all the people
- 36:59Speaker 1: in the pizzeria that were hanging out, having a nice time.
- 37:01Speaker 5: Oh, because they come up right as Danny Aiello closes.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:05Speaker 5: And they're like, come on, Sal, let us in. It's
- 37:07Speaker 5: Spike Lee, his sister, Martin Lawrence, and comedian Steve White.
- 37:13Speaker 5: And then Daniel Yellow, and John Turturro's like, no, beat it.
- 37:18Speaker 5: And then Daniel Yellow goes, four slices down out of here.
- 37:22Speaker 5: Like he's even being nice now.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Again, it's like he loves providing for them.
- 37:26Speaker 5: He unlocks his door and allows them in. And feeds them.
- 37:32Speaker 5: And then, Bill Nunn comes in.
- 37:34Speaker 1: With the radio, cranking fight to power, thankfully with no
- 37:36Speaker 1: rosy press.
- 37:39Speaker 5: This time. And then he just goes, he bashes the
- 37:42Speaker 5: radio in, and he drops N-bombs all over the place.
- 37:45Speaker 1: And then everyone just.
- 37:46Speaker 5: Then they attack Danny Aiello, and a huge fight erupts,
- 37:49Speaker 5: and then I guess Bill Nunn gets choked out by
- 37:53Speaker 5: a cop. Yeah.
- 37:54Speaker 1: The cops, I think, I don't know their names, but
- 37:57Speaker 1: they're like straight porn and gay porn.
- 38:01Speaker 5: That's their names.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:02Speaker 1: The one that looks like Jeremy one's Daniel Aylor's brother
- 38:06Speaker 1: yeah really the one that goes this hydrant better stay off.
- 38:12Speaker 5: Frank Vincent when they spray the fire hydrant on his
- 38:16Speaker 5: car and he goes what are their names Moe and
- 38:19Speaker 5: Joe that's their names Moe and Joe what sir Moe
- 38:22Speaker 5: and Joe Black he goes what do you want us
- 38:25Speaker 5: to do he goes what do I want you to
- 38:26Speaker 5: do I want him locked under.
- 38:28Speaker 1: The fucking jail cause they got his car wet But yeah, then.
- 38:34Speaker 5: But the thing about do the right thing is Spike
- 38:38Speaker 5: Lee throws the trash can through the window of the pizzeria.
- 38:41Speaker 5: And then they all just go in and riot and
- 38:43Speaker 5: light it on fire. But then he goes back the
- 38:45Speaker 5: next day to get paid. That part kind of killed me.
- 38:50Speaker 5: And it makes me sympathetic to Danny Aiello.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Yes, he.
- 38:53Speaker 5: And I guess... I guess that's the cultural divide between
- 38:56Speaker 5: white and black. I don't know what it's like to
- 38:58Speaker 5: watch that movie as a black guy.
- 38:59Speaker 10: Well, that's what Spike Lee said. He said, people say, well,
- 39:02Speaker 10: did Mookie do the right thing? And he's like, only
- 39:05Speaker 10: white people ask me that question. Because the way he
- 39:10Speaker 10: put it is it's valuing white property over black life.
- 39:15Speaker 1: But I don't get that. That's absurd.
- 39:18Speaker 10: That is absurd, because it's more like valuing white property
- 39:22Speaker 10: over white life because he did it to divert the
- 39:25Speaker 10: anger from the guy to his property.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Right yeah um or.
- 39:31Speaker 10: At least that's the way it comes up but i
- 39:34Speaker 10: don't know when i watch the movie it really feels
- 39:36Speaker 10: like the crowd's sort of dying down at that moment
- 39:40Speaker 10: and that energizes them again of course he.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Could have filmed it the other way and you could
- 39:45Speaker 1: i don't know You know, to be perfectly.
- 39:47Speaker 5: That's a good point, Fred, because they are dying down
- 39:49Speaker 5: because they all have those lines to camera like, that's.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Messed up what he did, man. Tired of you and
- 39:53Speaker 1: those three stooges you sell.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:55Speaker 5: Robin Harris says, I'm tired of you and those three...
- 39:57Speaker 5: There's only two sons.
- 40:01Speaker 1: That's funny. Robin Harris goes, I'm tired of you and
- 40:03Speaker 1: those three stooges you sell. I don't feel like saying
- 40:07Speaker 1: that again.
- 40:07Speaker 5: I like that Danny Aiello and his sons... In Manhattan,
- 40:11Speaker 5: there's always like a little gate where you put your trash,
- 40:14Speaker 5: and it only comes up like waist high, and that's
- 40:16Speaker 5: where they're standing.
- 40:17Speaker 1: And for some reason, during this race riot, they're completely safe. Well,
- 40:22Speaker 1: Ozzie Day puts them over there, but he closes the gate,
- 40:25Speaker 1: so then we can get to them. They're completely safe.
- 40:27Speaker 5: He closes the gate.
- 40:28Speaker 1: It's fine.
- 40:38Speaker 5: I'm beat.
- 40:43Speaker 21: Daddy, you know, I've been thinking. Maybe we should sell
- 40:48Speaker 21: this place. Get out while we're still ahead and alive.
- 40:56Speaker 3: You really think you know what's best for us, Pino?
- 41:00Speaker 3: Maybe we could... Can we sell this and open up
- 41:05Speaker 3: a new one in our own neighborhood?
- 41:07Speaker 14: There's too many pizzerias already there.
- 41:10Speaker 5: Maybe we could try something different.
- 41:12Speaker 3: What am I going to do? That's all I know.
- 41:14Speaker 3: What am I doing? I've been here 25 years. Where
- 41:16Speaker 3: am I going?
- 41:19Speaker 8: One of the most impressive things about it, and I
- 41:22Speaker 8: think it's just from the writing standpoint, too, because it
- 41:25Speaker 8: was written by one person, and how balanced he makes things.
- 41:30Speaker 8: I mean, it would have been really easy to make this,
- 41:33Speaker 8: you know, to make the white characters very stereotypical, or
- 41:36Speaker 8: to make them look like horrible people.
- 41:38Speaker 1: But He does it. He kind of makes it pretty
- 41:41Speaker 1: even across the board with, like, everybody.
- 41:43Speaker 5: A friend of mine and me, we were marveling, and
- 41:49Speaker 5: this goes to Jungle Fever, too, at how exceptional Spike
- 41:55Speaker 5: Lee writes for Italians.
- 41:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:57Speaker 5: Like, he writes Italians better than any Italian writer in
- 42:02Speaker 5: the world. Like, when there are, I mean, Jungle Fever,
- 42:04Speaker 5: when they're like, you know, at least my brother's not
- 42:08Speaker 5: a fucking crackhead.
- 42:09Speaker 1: My brother's a recovering heroin addict on methadone, so fuck you.
- 42:15Speaker 1: He stole my car radio.
- 42:16Speaker 5: How do you know he stole it?
- 42:17Speaker 1: He tried to sell no fucking thing back to me.
- 42:20Speaker 5: Like that huge.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Argument they have when John Turturro's at his newsstand.
- 42:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:23Speaker 5: I'm doing different Spike Lee movies, but, but even in
- 42:28Speaker 5: Do the Right Thing, he writes for Italians, so wow,
- 42:31Speaker 5: it's really, he must have really studied them as a, like,
- 42:36Speaker 5: He must have grown up.
- 42:37Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe he didn't.
- 42:40Speaker 5: But the dialogue, like.
- 42:41Speaker 1: You said, it's not stereotypical at all. If anything, it's exact.
- 42:46Speaker 1: It's real. It's frightening. I grew up in New Jersey,
- 42:49Speaker 1: surrounded by Italians, and it's exact. Just the way... What's that, Fred?
- 42:55Speaker 1: I don't know. I have trouble with the movie, really.
- 42:58Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 42:59Speaker 10: And I think one of the things... I mean, it's stagey.
- 43:02Speaker 10: It's not really naturalistic.
- 43:03Speaker 5: It's like a play.
- 43:05Speaker 1: It is like a play. I don't mind that necessarily.
- 43:09Speaker 10: But I guess the thing that I have trouble with
- 43:12Speaker 10: is that all the conflict is on the surface. And
- 43:17Speaker 10: how can you represent racism in America if it's all
- 43:23Speaker 10: explicit and stated? Because really most of it is hidden
- 43:28Speaker 10: and cowardly And people don't come out and say what
- 43:31Speaker 10: they mean. They say other things that don't make any sense.
- 43:34Speaker 10: And they hide the fact that they're being racist most
- 43:37Speaker 10: of the time because everybody knows, oh, you shouldn't be racist.
- 43:41Speaker 10: But people are. I mean, you can blind test it.
- 43:44Speaker 10: And it's a fact that people do racist things. And
- 43:47Speaker 10: they don't think of themselves as racist. So I guess
- 43:50Speaker 10: the thing that I have trouble with is just that
- 43:54Speaker 10: everything is stated out in the open.
- 43:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:57Speaker 5: But it's not, too, because Daniel Yellow doesn't say anything
- 44:02Speaker 5: until the one sentence.
- 44:04Speaker 8: He's probably the deepest character in the whole. I mean,
- 44:06Speaker 8: everybody else could be a little more.
- 44:09Speaker 5: Is that the fatal flaw of Spike Lee, that everything
- 44:11Speaker 5: is always on the surface?
- 44:12Speaker 1: Maybe that's a stylistic thing. I think she's got to
- 44:15Speaker 1: have it. I think those are awful, unwatchable.
- 44:20Speaker 5: And people go, did you see She's Gonna Have It?
- 44:22Speaker 5: He made it when he was at NYU. And I'm like, yeah,
- 44:25Speaker 5: it looks like he made it in high school. It's
- 44:27Speaker 5: a huge leap forward from those first two to do
- 44:30Speaker 5: the right thing, both visually and just from a writing standpoint.
- 44:34Speaker 5: I don't know what happened in that couple of years
- 44:37Speaker 5: from then, but it's a big improvement. And Fred's got
- 44:40Speaker 5: a good point. Everything is on the surface. The entire
- 44:43Speaker 5: movie is.
- 44:45Speaker 1: It's extraordinarily hot.
- 44:46Speaker 10: In case you don't hear the bickering, there's always the
- 44:49Speaker 10: hand gesture to show you that we're bickering.
- 44:53Speaker 8: I don't think it exists in the real world. To me,
- 44:56Speaker 8: it kind of creates its own little universe. And you
- 44:59Speaker 8: get the weird colors.
- 45:00Speaker 1: That's why I said Sesame Street. Yeah, it kind of is.
- 45:03Speaker 1: It's kind of like Sesame Street. But you get the
- 45:04Speaker 1: weird color scheme. You get that music soundtrack that never stops.
- 45:08Speaker 1: It's like its own little kind of running thing. And
- 45:10Speaker 1: it becomes a little claustrophobic.
- 45:12Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 45:12Speaker 1: It becomes like Bitch's Brew after a while.
- 45:14Speaker 3: It definitely.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Where after a.
- 45:15Speaker 5: While you go, this music hasn't really stopped, as you said.
- 45:19Speaker 1: It's non-stop. And I don't know, it creates its own
- 45:23Speaker 1: little scenario to me.
- 45:24Speaker 8: So it feels like it's... It's a little removed from reality,
- 45:27Speaker 8: and I think that's why you kind of get a
- 45:29Speaker 8: little bit of a pass to make things a little
- 45:31Speaker 8: more cut and dry and a little more specific to
- 45:33Speaker 8: these characters.
- 45:35Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 45:36Speaker 8: In a way, I think it works in this movie.
- 45:37Speaker 8: If it was a different movie, I think I might
- 45:39Speaker 8: have more problems.
- 45:39Speaker 1: I think it's like an all-time great movie, though. Oh, yeah.
- 45:44Speaker 1: Everybody thinks that.
- 45:45Speaker 5: You don't.
- 45:46Speaker 1: No, I really don't. I mean, what other problems? He
- 45:49Speaker 1: doesn't like blacks. There's a lot of blacks. That's a problem.
- 45:54Speaker 1: This is the point where I have to bring out my, like,
- 45:57Speaker 1: I'm not a racist credentials to defend myself. But no,
- 46:01Speaker 1: it's really one of those things. I'm a human racist.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I believe in e-racism. I hate everyone equally. You said
- 46:06Speaker 1: that as Colin Quinn, yeah?
- 46:09Speaker 5: I'm a racist.
- 46:09Speaker 1: Human racist, yeah? Let's keep it PG, okay? For me,
- 46:16Speaker 1: it's like kind of the difference....
- 46:20Speaker 10: It may be a stylistic thing, but it feels like
- 46:23Speaker 10: illustration to me. Like the difference between representing something and
- 46:29Speaker 10: illustrating something so he can tell us about it. It
- 46:35Speaker 10: definitely has its points, but it doesn't engage me in
- 46:38Speaker 10: the same way that.
- 46:39Speaker 1: A lot of other movies do. What Spike Lee movies
- 46:42Speaker 1: do you like?
- 46:43Speaker 10: I'm not really a big fan.
- 46:46Speaker 1: I've missed a lot of later ones.
- 46:48Speaker 5: Son of Sam?
- 46:50Speaker 1: I just saw it, and it was okay. I was
- 46:52Speaker 1: really in love with Inside Man. I liked it all right.
- 46:56Speaker 10: I mean, Spike Lee, for me, is not like Oliver Stone. Like,
- 47:00Speaker 10: I just won't watch Oliver Stone. I won't pay to
- 47:02Speaker 10: watch it. If it comes on TV, I'll watch.
- 47:05Speaker 1: It, maybe.
- 47:05Speaker 5: Oliver Stone's another guy, like, where he hit home run, like, Platoon,
- 47:10Speaker 5: Wall Street.
- 47:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Like, JFK goes into batshit crazy territory. But it's
- 47:15Speaker 1: kind of impressive, though. Clay Burton's Clay Shaw.
- 47:18Speaker 21: Yeah.
- 47:18Speaker 1: Like, Joe Pesci's, like, yeah.
- 47:20Speaker 5: Kennedy was mixed up with gay hustlers where their wigs
- 47:22Speaker 5: fell off at sex parties. That makes perfect sense. And, like, Nixon,
- 47:26Speaker 5: I'll even go along for the ride. But then, like,
- 47:28Speaker 5: you turn, you go, this is a guy that either
- 47:31Speaker 5: went crazy....
- 47:34Speaker 1: That's a.
- 47:36Speaker 5: Yeah, Oliver Stone's a weird one, too. But Oliver Stone,
- 47:39Speaker 5: I think, is more odd than Spike Lee as far
- 47:43Speaker 5: as the odd trajectory down.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:46Speaker 5: Because Spike Lee, you see the ascension... And with Oliver Stone,
- 47:50Speaker 5: you see the desensitization?
- 47:52Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 47:53Speaker 10: I just swore off Oliver Stone when Platoon won Best Picture.
- 47:57Speaker 5: Whoa, wait a minute.
- 47:58Speaker 1: I'm not down with it. We're going to have a problem.
- 48:00Speaker 1: I'm not down with that.
- 48:01Speaker 5: That's one of the greatest movies ever made.
- 48:04Speaker 7: Platoon?
- 48:05Speaker 1: So is Do the Right Thing.
- 48:07Speaker 5: I've heard this before.
- 48:08Speaker 1: I said Do the Right Thing is in my top 100.
- 48:10Speaker 5: Platoon is like a top 20, top 10.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:12Speaker 3: No.
- 48:16Speaker 5: Dualities. Sometimes I feel like I was born of both men,
- 48:20Speaker 5: two fathers. It's Lias and Barnes fighting for Charlie Sheen's soul.
- 48:24Speaker 8: He hates the dialogue. I've heard this story before.
- 48:26Speaker 5: It's the dialogue. I should have picked Platoon.
- 48:28Speaker 1: The dialogue in both movies, yeah, just drives me nuts.
- 48:31Speaker 1: What part of the dialogue could you possibly.
- 48:34Speaker 5: We're done. We'll do the right thing. Yeah, okay.
- 48:37Speaker 17: What part of Platoon... Again, it's just like... It's kind
- 48:40Speaker 17: of like illustration. It's like somebody is writing at me
- 48:45Speaker 17: instead of like... drawing me in.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Like, by the time it gets... I got a bad
- 48:50Speaker 1: feeling about this one, Bob.
- 48:53Speaker 5: How's it going, man? Not good, LT, not good. This
- 48:56Speaker 5: cocksucker's got every car on the deck.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Is that true with Sergeant Barnes? Yep.
- 49:02Speaker 5: What'd you say, LT?
- 49:03Speaker 1: You want to join us? See, I like these movies
- 49:05Speaker 1: better than you just do.
- 49:07Speaker 5: These boys are probably trying to rape me.
- 49:09Speaker 3: So?
- 49:09Speaker 5: What do you say I'm up to be, LT?
- 49:10Speaker 1: Jewish? Jewish!
- 49:12Speaker 5: How's that writing at you? That's about as underground as
- 49:15Speaker 5: you could be. Well, the joke is, if you want
- 49:17Speaker 5: to be raped, you're somehow a Jewish person. Like John Reilly,
- 49:21Speaker 5: just playing the stupidest Vietnam veteran ever.
- 49:25Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 49:27Speaker 10: I was watching Walking Dead last night, and there's this
- 49:31Speaker 10: scene where Norman Reedus is like, you know, he's angry
- 49:38Speaker 10: about this and angry about that.
- 49:39Speaker 1: And you can tell it's just messed him up that
- 49:42Speaker 1: the little girl died. And they don't say that. Nobody
- 49:45Speaker 1: ever says that.
- 49:47Speaker 10: But you can tell, and they're writing it so that
- 49:50Speaker 10: you can tell how people behave, and people don't say
- 49:53Speaker 10: what they mean.
- 49:54Speaker 5: All right, I'm going to give you some platoon things
- 49:56Speaker 5: that's not written at you. Yeah. Okay. They're all smoking
- 50:01Speaker 5: opium in their forward operating base, and they're talking about
- 50:04Speaker 5: how they should kill Tom Barringer, right?
- 50:08Speaker 1: Yeah. And Charlie Sheen says, I say we fry that
- 50:11Speaker 1: fucker tonight. And he goes, let me tell you, the
- 50:14Speaker 1: Puerto Rican guy goes, Barnes has been shot six times.
- 50:17Speaker 5: Barnes ain't dead. Barnes ain't meant to die.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Only thing to kill Barnes is Barnes. And off in
- 50:23Speaker 1: the corner you hear, you all talking about killing?
- 50:26Speaker 5: You all experts?
- 50:28Speaker 1: And all of a sudden they all freak.
- 50:30Speaker 5: Out because they realize Barringer has heard their entire conversation. Right?
- 50:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:34Speaker 5: And that scene, you think you're being written at? Because
- 50:38Speaker 5: he goes, he walks in, he goes, well, I'd like
- 50:41Speaker 5: to hear about it, Potheads.
- 50:43Speaker 1: And he takes the hash pipe out of the Puerto
- 50:44Speaker 1: Rican guy's hand, and he looks at the pipe, and
- 50:47Speaker 1: he goes, y'all smoked this shit so as to escape
- 50:50Speaker 1: from reality.
- 50:51Speaker 5: And he leans up against the post, and there's a
- 50:53Speaker 5: Christmas light. It's a perfect movie. He goes, y'all smoked
- 50:59Speaker 5: this shit so as to escape from reality. And he
- 51:02Speaker 5: leans up against the post, and there are Christmas lights
- 51:04Speaker 5: going across his head. And he goes... I am reality. Like,
- 51:10Speaker 5: it's the most, and he goes, the way it ought to,
- 51:13Speaker 5: the way it is, and the way it ought to be.
- 51:14Speaker 5: I got no problem what a man does, as he told,
- 51:16Speaker 5: but when he don't, when we break down, the machine
- 51:19Speaker 5: breaks down. Gentlemen, I can't have that. So it's like,
- 51:24Speaker 5: Berender's whole rap in that scene, he could go in like,
- 51:28Speaker 5: and go, you guys just fucking talking about killing me? Like,
- 51:32Speaker 5: what's the, and then he goes into this sideways thing
- 51:35Speaker 5: about like, the actual bureaucracy of the war.
- 51:38Speaker 1: When the machine breaks down, we break down.
- 51:40Speaker 5: He knows his part, right?
- 51:43Speaker 1: And he knows they love the foe so much. And
- 51:45Speaker 1: he goes, y'all love lies.
- 51:46Speaker 5: I get that.
- 51:47Speaker 1: Y'all want to kick ass. And then he says, there's
- 51:50Speaker 1: six of you boys.
- 51:51Speaker 5: You remember this?
- 51:53Speaker 12: Okay.
- 51:54Speaker 1: And I'm here all by my lonesome. Ain't nobody gonna know.
- 52:00Speaker 5: Kill me. Remember this?
- 52:04Speaker 1: Vaguely.
- 52:06Speaker 5: And there's a long beat.
- 52:07Speaker 1: They all look at each other.
- 52:09Speaker 5: No one moves because they're frozen because he's got that
- 52:12Speaker 5: scar on his face.
- 52:14Speaker 1: And then Berenger says, ah, shit, I don't owe you.
- 52:17Speaker 1: And it took me about 12 viewings before I.
- 52:21Speaker 5: And I asked Charlie Sheen this on my podcast. Barnes
- 52:24Speaker 5: really wanted them to.
- 52:25Speaker 1: Kill him because he can't fucking die. Watch that scene again.
- 52:31Speaker 5: You can pull it up on YouTube. It's got German subtitles,
- 52:34Speaker 5: so I think on YouTube a bit. And when you
- 52:36Speaker 5: watch it again, Watch it knowing that Barringer, Sergeant Burns, really,
- 52:43Speaker 5: it's a plea.
- 52:44Speaker 1: He's begging them.
- 52:47Speaker 5: Kill me. And that's why he's almost crying when he says,
- 52:51Speaker 5: it's not machismo, like, I could kick your ass, I
- 52:54Speaker 5: shit on all you. He's crying, I shit on all you,
- 52:58Speaker 5: because none of you guys have the fucking balls to
- 53:01Speaker 5: do what I do all day, and that is just
- 53:02Speaker 5: fucking kill Vietnamese people, and I'm begging you guys to
- 53:05Speaker 5: kill me. And I think that's, I don't think that's being,
- 53:10Speaker 5: I can't, it's how you feel.
- 53:12Speaker 1: It's not exactly what I'm talking about.
- 53:14Speaker 5: I feel like I'm observing. Like, when Pesci, like, amuse
- 53:18Speaker 5: you how? Do I amuse you like a clown? I
- 53:20Speaker 5: always get uncomfortable watching it. Like, I'm at the table,
- 53:23Speaker 5: and I get super bugged out. Like, I don't, when
- 53:25Speaker 5: I'm watching it on my couch, I don't move, because
- 53:27Speaker 5: I don't want him to look at me next. Like,
- 53:29Speaker 5: that's how I feel watching that scene.
- 53:31Speaker 1: In Platoon with Berenger, where I'm like, uh-oh. Y'all talking
- 53:35Speaker 1: about killing? Y'all experts? visceral thing, I don't feel it.
- 53:41Speaker 5: There's an incredible, enormous, fatal, fatal, fatal flaw in Platoon
- 53:48Speaker 5: which makes it perfect. And it's when Defoe dies.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I haven't seen this movie.
- 53:53Speaker 5: You haven't seen Platoon? No, it's good that you're in
- 53:56Speaker 5: a movie podcast.
- 53:56Speaker 1: I know, it's really working out.
- 53:58Speaker 5: It's a movie podcast with guys that haven't seen the
- 54:00Speaker 5: greatest movies of all time.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Yes. but I've seen Willy Wonka the new one twice.
- 54:09Speaker 5: When Dafoe they Berenger tells everybody that Dafoe got killed
- 54:16Speaker 5: but he because he doesn't have the balls to kill
- 54:18Speaker 5: Dafoe himself so they leave without Dafoe and they look
- 54:22Speaker 5: out of the helicopter and they see Dafoe running running
- 54:25Speaker 5: to the landings of the LZ and Charlie Sheen's like
- 54:28Speaker 5: he's fucking down there he lies down there make that
- 54:31Speaker 5: chopper And there's like 400 Viet Cong soldiers chasing Willem
- 54:37Speaker 5: Dafoe out of the jungle, right? They look like ants.
- 54:40Speaker 5: And then we get a closer look. And they just
- 54:42Speaker 5: shoot him. They just light him up. And Dafoe drops
- 54:45Speaker 5: to his knees. And it's a shot from the ground
- 54:48Speaker 5: looking up at Dafoe's front as he's getting shot by
- 54:52Speaker 5: 40 Viet Cong. And it's perfect timing where the helicopter
- 54:56Speaker 5: actually goes between Dafoe's arms. Like it's ridiculous how perfect
- 55:01Speaker 5: the shot is his squids don't go off.
- 55:05Speaker 1: There's no blood. You ever caught that?
- 55:10Speaker 5: But it's such a perfect shot that you can't do
- 55:12Speaker 5: that over and go, well, maybe, it's like talking about
- 55:15Speaker 5: trying to recapture the magic, like how do we make
- 55:18Speaker 5: a helicopter go through his touchdown arms again when he's
- 55:22Speaker 5: doing his Christ pose?
- 55:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:25Speaker 1: If they did it now, they'd do CGI.
- 55:27Speaker 5: It's the sad thing. You know, Quentin Tarantino was on,
- 55:29Speaker 5: I think he was being interviewed by Ron Bennington. talking
- 55:33Speaker 5: about CGI, and he said, it's like training for a
- 55:37Speaker 5: boxing match, movie making. He's talking about why he never
- 55:40Speaker 5: used CGI. He says, it's not fair. And Ron Bennington goes,
- 55:43Speaker 5: how so? He goes, it's like training for a boxing
- 55:45Speaker 5: match and hitting the bag and running and jumping rope
- 55:48Speaker 5: and sparring, and then you get in the ring and
- 55:50Speaker 5: the other guy has a machine gun. It's just completely
- 55:52Speaker 5: not fair to use CGI.
- 55:54Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 55:55Speaker 1: But yeah, none of Willem Dafoe's squibs go up.
- 55:57Speaker 10: Yeah, but theatrically, seeing blood isn't absolutely necessary to a
- 56:03Speaker 10: death scene.
- 56:04Speaker 1: That's what makes it so perfect.
- 56:05Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying. And if he is the Christ
- 56:07Speaker 5: figure in the movie, what's more perfect than the fact
- 56:11Speaker 5: that he doesn't even bleed? He's not of us.
- 56:15Speaker 1: He was never meant for all this.
- 56:17Speaker 11: I don't know.
- 56:18Speaker 1: I'm a huge platoon guy.
- 56:20Speaker 5: And you're wrong.
- 56:21Speaker 8: You just answered the question from earlier, though, as to
- 56:24Speaker 8: why I would start a movie podcast. Watching you talk
- 56:29Speaker 8: about that and Being so in love with a movie,
- 56:32Speaker 8: that's what I've found over the years now doing this.
- 56:35Speaker 8: It's like sitting there watching people get that involved in
- 56:38Speaker 8: a movie.
- 56:38Speaker 5: You've got to get Greg Proops on your movie. Because
- 56:41Speaker 5: he'll pull like Sunset Boulevard and break it. Sunset Boulevard
- 56:46Speaker 5: is a little too mainstream. But he'll get like Soldier
- 56:50Speaker 5: in the Rain with Steve McQueen and Jackie Gleason and
- 56:52Speaker 5: break it down to an elemental level where you're like,
- 56:55Speaker 5: I never really went that deep with it, Greg. He
- 56:57Speaker 5: was on my podcast, and we did like Baby Jane
- 57:00Speaker 5: for like 20 minutes. But you are in the chair playing.
- 57:04Speaker 5: You would have treated me this way if I wasn't
- 57:06Speaker 5: in this chair. My wife's obsessed with Joan Crawford. How
- 57:11Speaker 5: fucking horrible she is. And I never thought she was
- 57:14Speaker 5: particularly bad in anything.
- 57:16Speaker 1: She's just crazy.
- 57:18Speaker 5: Everyone thinks she's really bad in everything. I love when
- 57:21Speaker 5: Betty Davis does the impression of Joan Crawford to order
- 57:25Speaker 5: booze over the phone. Hello. Am I feeling well?
- 57:29Speaker 1: If I send my sister to pick up some alcohol.
- 57:32Speaker 5: But you are in a chair. Half the viewers just went,
- 57:37Speaker 5: I'm not sure what's happening. Are they changing the dial?
- 57:39Speaker 5: A conversation with me is like when you just move
- 57:42Speaker 5: the radio knob real quick. So yeah, Do the Right Thing,
- 57:46Speaker 5: and then Danny Ella got nominated, and he lost, and
- 57:48Speaker 5: Ozzie Davis.
- 57:49Speaker 1: You know what?
- 57:50Speaker 5: In hindsight, if I'm going to look back at Do
- 57:52Speaker 5: the Right Thing, not great, pretty good, pretty damn good movie.
- 57:57Speaker 1: Fred doesn't agree.
- 57:58Speaker 5: But I'm going to come off of great and say
- 57:59Speaker 5: damn good, and I'm going to say we should all
- 58:03Speaker 5: go back and really study and appreciate the perfection that
- 58:06Speaker 5: is Ozzie Davis. In a small role, which could have
- 58:09Speaker 5: been just thrown away by somebody hamming it up. The
- 58:12Speaker 5: dignity he brought, that homeless man. And then he's indignant
- 58:18Speaker 5: when he goes to buy Miller High Life at the
- 58:23Speaker 5: Korean Deli, and they don't have it.
- 58:25Speaker 1: They don't have it. And he's apoplectic.
- 58:28Speaker 5: Like, he becomes an aristocrat. Like, bro.
- 58:32Speaker 1: Man, asking a lot, asking a man who changes malt liquor.
- 58:37Speaker 1: I think it's impressive visually.
- 58:39Speaker 8: I still think the way that he shoots it and
- 58:42Speaker 8: the angles that he.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Shoots things at. It's the TV show Batman.
- 58:45Speaker 8: Yeah, it's done in such an unconventional way that I
- 58:49Speaker 8: still respond to that.
- 58:51Speaker 1: And even he gets out of that. You watch his
- 58:53Speaker 1: stuff now and it's so... normal. Inside Man was a
- 58:57Speaker 1: straight up Hollywood movie. It's like, why did you stray
- 58:59Speaker 1: from that? Because I think that's one of the most...
- 59:01Speaker 1: Because he wanted to get paid. That's what it is.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Because the studio said.
- 59:05Speaker 5: You'll direct this with Clive Owen and Denzel, but we
- 59:08Speaker 5: don't want any of your tricks.
- 59:09Speaker 1: Yeah, we don't want weird shots. We want you to
- 59:11Speaker 1: act white. God, that's what it's come to. Maybe.
- 59:16Speaker 8: But I think it's impressively balanced on the writing, and
- 59:20Speaker 8: I think that's good.
- 59:21Speaker 1: Fred doesn't like the writing. It's a different thing.
- 59:24Speaker 10: I don't generally like message movies.
- 59:28Speaker 5: I just, I don't. I mean, so like, you know,
- 59:34Speaker 5: Atticus Finch. Yeah.
- 59:36Speaker 1: Same in the movie. What's more of a message movie
- 59:40Speaker 1: than that? It's not one of my favorite movies. Okay, good.
- 59:43Speaker 5: I think it stinks.
- 59:45Speaker 1: I think it stinks. I think Gregory Peck stinks. I
- 59:47Speaker 1: remember the kid dressed as a ham. I like that. Oh,
- 59:52Speaker 1: and I like Robert Duvall in the last couple of minutes.
- 59:56Speaker 5: No lines.
- 59:57Speaker 1: No lines, yeah. I like Beaver. Yeah, I just like
- 59:59Speaker 1: him being there.
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: It's so spooky.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: With his dyed blonde hair.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Because I forgot that was him. And then you see
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: it years later. It's like, it's baby Robert Duvall. Yeah,
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: and you think he's going to rape everyone. I'm being serious.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: It's like a horror movie. It's shot like, they shoot
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: Duvall like he's Jason Voorhees. And he's just a guy
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: that didn't talk. He's just a guy.
- 1:00:24Speaker 10: Stand up, boy.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Your dad is coming. Do you like Gregory Peck?
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: He's horrible.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: He kind of does one thing.
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: Let me pick up that name. I'm sorry I dropped this.
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: Eddie Murphy told me. There it is. On the set
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: of Pluto Nash. I don't, you know, I don't want
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: to brag about my.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: I know you don't like message movies, but I was
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: in Pluto Nash.
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: And the message is, sometimes garbage gets funded. Sometimes the
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: studio will throw money at garbage trash heaps. Like Fraggle Rock.
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: Because it was an actual trash heap. So was Pluto Nash.
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: It's an allegory, really, the whole movie. It's the book
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: of Matthew in outer space with Louis Gluthman.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Every now and then.
- 1:01:06Speaker 10: The only reason I express my dissatisfaction with anything is
- 1:01:10Speaker 10: because sometimes people can clue you in. You know, there
- 1:01:13Speaker 10: are whole reams of stuff that I just don't, that
- 1:01:16Speaker 10: just goes by me.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: It's not my thing.
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: So you would like Platoon if there wasn't the voiceover
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: where he explains to you that he feels like both
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: men were fighting for his soul?
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: No.
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: You wouldn't like it more?
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: No.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: You like Blade Runner director's cut without the BL? I
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: don't like Blade Runner. Then you're just an odd guy.
- 1:01:33Speaker 10: Blade Runner, to me, I can explain why I don't
- 1:01:37Speaker 10: like Blade Runner. It's been explained to me that if
- 1:01:39Speaker 10: I pay very close attention, that some of the human
- 1:01:43Speaker 10: characters that I don't care about are actually androids that
- 1:01:48Speaker 10: I don't care about.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: Why does that change the game?
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: I saw the director's cut of Blade Runner at a theater.
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: And it was like four and a half hours long.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: Literally, it was four and a half hours long.
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: Because there's no VO and everything has to play out
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: in real time to somehow explain it. It's a movie
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: that needs a VO because you've created another galaxy of life.
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: And it's amazing to me that a director would bring
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: this glop of shit.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: To a studio like, no, this is the way. This
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: is it?
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: In the studio for once, because they are, listen, listeners,
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: the studio is never right.
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: Ever.
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: But in this one case, the studio goes, I think
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: maybe it should be two and a half hours long,
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: maybe three hours long, maybe a voiceover so the audience
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: knows what the fuck is going on. And I've got
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: to tell you the Eddie Murphy story real quick, but
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: Brian Koppelman wrote walking tall he was a guest on
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: my podcast and he did oceans 13 good writer and
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: uh he said when they were rewriting walking was that
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: the one with the rock walking tall yeah yeah he
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: was brought on he didn't write it he was brought
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: on to fix it him and his partner yeah he's
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: like a play doctor yes and they had he did
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: his pass him and his buddy and the studio goes
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: it'd be really great uh it's great don't you know
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: don't get us wrong we love what you did but
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: we'd love it if the stick had a personality The stick.
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: The stick. The two-by-four that he works with. It needs
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: a personality. That was a studio note. But Eddie Murphy
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: told me what got cut out of Clumps for The
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: Nutty Professor, when they're doing Cape Fear while watching Cape Fear,
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: it's pretty impressive.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: That's pretty impressive.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: When Sherman Clump is on his date with either Jada
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: Pinkett Smith or Janet Jackson, I don't remember which gal
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: it is, and they're watching Cape Fear in the theater.
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: And then in the back, behind them is Buddy Love
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: laughing like Robert Mitchum. Or like, no, they're watching the
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: Robert Mitchum Cape Fear. And behind them is Buddy Love
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: laughing like De Niro in the new Scorsese.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: Like, yeah, hold that belly in, Robert Mitchum.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: I mean, that's so impressive and brilliant.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: And Eddie told me what the studio made him take out.
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: I'm gregory peck and i'm not breathing in this scene
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: which is such a funny line and i go why
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: he goes they're like you know he's a friend of
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: the academy you're gonna make it i'm like but it's
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: the clubs like a studio was like didn't want to
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: upset gregory back in case he made a comeback at
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: 90 yeah yeah but it yeah to me he always
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: seemed like he wasn't breathing in.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: That scene I'm Gregory Peck.
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: I'm not breathing.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: It's so funny.
- 1:04:39Speaker 8: That's a good crossover, actually. Mixing the two Cape Fears.
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: And it never dawns on most people, like, they're doing
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: Cape Fear, and they're doing the new Cape.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: Fear while they're watching the old Cape Fear. Ugh.
- 1:04:50Speaker 8: That's more clever than I gave the clumps credit for.
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: And by the way, both Cape Fears suck.
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: They're both terrible.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: I hate Cape Fear.
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: Robert Mitchum is the only... Robert Mitchum is so scary
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: as a regular-sized guy.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: De Niro's got the tattoos. The movie opens with him
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: doing dips naked in jail.
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: And then he's got a chain. Counselor, come out, come out,
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: wherever you are. And Robert Mitchum is just a guy with, like,
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: a Hawaiian shirt and a hat. And there's one scene
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: of him punching guys out under a boardwalk.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: You remember that?
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: No.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: And he's got, like, a four. It looks like his
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: jab is four feet long. He's just dropping guys by himself.
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: And when the cops come up to Robert Mitchum in
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: the bar, he goes, Hey, I don't mind talking to you.
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: You take that billy club out, fella. You better call
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: the riot squad.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: And that one sentence, you go, That's a scary fucking guy.
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: I was in a gym in Buffalo doing stand-up. Not
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: in the gym. That would have been really weird.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: Doing stand-up in Buffalo. During the day, I visited a gym.
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: And there's all, like, actors, muscle-bound and shit. And everyone's like,
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: thanks for the workout, Lou Ferrigno. You know, hey, Jean-Claude
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: Van Damme. And there's a picture of Robert Mitchum, a headshot.
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: And it said, y'all keep lifting weights. I'll stick to
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: padded suits. Robert Mitchum.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: You guys know him? The only other thing I wanted
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: to touch on on Do the Right Thing was.
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: Again with the Do the Right Thing!
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: You picked it, it's not my fault.
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: I shouldn't have.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I should have spoken to Fred first. You know, I'm
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: being serious. Rocky Horror Picture Show, overrated, underrated, push. Probably
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: in the real world... What do you mean, probably? Well,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: it depends on who you are. Are you part of
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: the cast? Because there's levels to Rocky Horror, so... Rocky Horror, over, under,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: or push. Over.
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: Over. Yeah, it's terrible.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: We know it's terrible. That's why it's great.
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: I hate people that tell me something's great because it's terrible. Like, no,
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: that's why Letterman's monologue is so great, because it's bad.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: It's like a bad, it's an anti-monologue. No, it's bad.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: See, remember when you just told me it was bad?
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: That's bad, because it's bad. It's Bechtian.
- 1:07:03Speaker 8: So do you like Ed Wood type things?
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: I don't think I've ever seen an Ed Wood movie
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: in my life.
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: Really?
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: You're on a movie podcast.
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: I'm a guest.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: I've seen many of those.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: I'm a guest.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: I've seen lots of Ed Wood movies, I just haven't
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: seen for two.
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: I've seen Ed Wood.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: Oh, well. Ed Wood's pretty good. I love not with you.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: Did you like that?
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: Rob Lowe and Piven and Thomas Chain.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: The guy that directed the Jeremy video. That's like his
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: big comeback. I'm out with you. You guys haven't seen it? Oh,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: I want to. I saw the trailer recently.
- 1:07:35Speaker 9: Really?
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: Yeah, it looks pretty incredible.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: I'll tell you off mic. I can't tell you because
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: I'll ruin it. Is this the one where they go
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: up to the cabin? Yeah.
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: We've got three days and we're just going to do
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: drugs and pills. Yeah.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: And things get a little south quick. Yeah, it looks
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: pretty incredible. Out of control. It's almost like rope.
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: Nice.
- 1:07:55Speaker 16: Rope.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: Overrated, underrated, push.
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: I don't know. I think it's underrated.
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: Completely underrated. I think it's underrated.
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: When I found out that the guys were gay, I
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: had to watch it again and again and again.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: He's like, we're gay?
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: The actors or the characters?
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: Characters. It's based on Leopold and Loeb. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: It's just the way that it's put together, it's amazing.
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: I never saw it. Four, how many cuts? Five, six,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: whatever the number of reels are. See, all of them
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: were kind of behind the back.
- 1:08:23Speaker 8: There's about one... This kind of legitimate cut, which was
- 1:08:26Speaker 8: really jarring.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: But on purpose jarring.
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: Yeah. It's very planned jarring.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: All the cuts are somebody in a black jacket walks
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: in front of the camera. Really? And then as they
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: clear a frame, it's a new reel. You've not seen Rope? No.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: What are you doing on a movie podcast? It's the
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: right theme of this.
- 1:08:44Speaker 10: I saw that movie filmed in the museum in Russia.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: It's all filmed in a single take.
- 1:08:51Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: There's a horror movie that never has a cut.
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: Really?
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: With the Olsen.
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: Twin sister yeah I heard about it because it's just
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: what's her name Elizabeth Olsen yeah it's incredible did this
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: come out recently.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Yes the last couple of years what's it called I don't.
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: Know what it's called but it's incredible there's no I
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: can't figure there's no cuts it.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: Just follows her through the house there are no I
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: cannot see one cut in the entire movie Wow.
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: And it's just all for the house.
- 1:09:14Speaker 8: They were setting things up, yeah, because they were like,
- 1:09:16Speaker 8: the directors had people like, he would be following her
- 1:09:19Speaker 8: into a room over here. and things had to be
- 1:09:21Speaker 8: different in the other room. He had people behind him
- 1:09:23Speaker 8: changing things in the room. She would come back through
- 1:09:26Speaker 8: with the camera, and things would.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: I mean, he's going behind the camera changing things.
- 1:09:30Speaker 10: It's funny how on film you can feel the mounting
- 1:09:33Speaker 10: pressure of an extended shot. Like, you can feel like, oh,
- 1:09:37Speaker 10: don't fuck it up, don't fuck it up.
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: The cope of the fantasy in Goodfellas. It almost gets
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: kind of like.
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: Crossing the.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Street, I get nervous.
- 1:09:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: We're going to get hit by a car.
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:47Speaker 5: Wow all right so do the right thing.
- 1:09:48Speaker 8: Okay the only thing i was going to say is
- 1:09:50Speaker 8: i'm re-watching it again this week and i'm like i
- 1:09:53Speaker 8: was kind of it's before i checked the details and
- 1:09:55Speaker 8: i'm doing the math and i'm trying to go well
- 1:09:57Speaker 8: this is like a reaction to the real world at
- 1:10:00Speaker 8: that time right and that's when i went back and
- 1:10:03Speaker 8: went oh my god this was before rodney king yeah
- 1:10:07Speaker 8: i mean it's weird how close this plays out that
- 1:10:10Speaker 8: we have police violence on a black man, and then
- 1:10:13Speaker 8: a riot breaks out. And this was two, three years
- 1:10:16Speaker 8: before the L.A.
- 1:10:17Speaker 5: Riots.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: But it was after another one.
- 1:10:19Speaker 5: Yeah I mean it's based it's based on another I
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: like how in your white world you have like a
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: half dozen there's only like a half dozen times that really.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: Happen no but I'm saying I'm saying that I mean come.
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: On how many times really has a cop beaten up
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: a black guy Rodney King and there was the other
- 1:10:34Speaker 5: one before that that's the time they videotaped it that's
- 1:10:37Speaker 5: how Fred sums up police violence there's a Rodney King
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: and the one that was before it what was that
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: called slavery I think it's called that's the one time
- 1:10:44Speaker 5: they videotaped remember that time Yeah, that one time. But,
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: I mean, that's the thing.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: Remember that Onion story? Police use exact right amount of force.
- 1:10:56Speaker 16: I don't know.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: I think that's amazing how it led.
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: It's prescient.
- 1:11:00Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, how it so closely sets that up.
- 1:11:08Speaker 8: Because that's when you realize that the movie is supposed
- 1:11:10Speaker 8: to be sort of this take on the way life
- 1:11:13Speaker 8: is in America. And it obviously was pretty damn close
- 1:11:16Speaker 8: because it all came true within a couple years.
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: And to combat Fred's cynicism, I would like to think
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: that Spike set up like this allegorical little world, this
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: little neighborhood.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: I know it takes place in Bed-Stuy and they reference
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: it a lot, but I don't... I hope.
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: But that's the thing with Spike is you don't know
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: how much of it is on the nose and how
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: much is like... Because.
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: I'm sympathetic to Danny Aiello after, like, he goes back
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: to get his money. And what Fred said in the interview,
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: only white people ask that question.
- 1:11:48Speaker 10: Well, that's what Spike Lee says, but, you know, he
- 1:11:53Speaker 10: says a lot of things.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: That's true. I mean, he said a lot of things.
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: He was in a documentary, 30 for 30, it's about, like,
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: Reggie Miller, how he accused of torture the Knicks. And
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: Spike Lee goes, then all of a sudden, I'm on
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: the back page of the New York Post. Like, I'm
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: a jinx. And look, I'm never in it for the publicity.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: He's in a room.
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: There's framed New York Post. Like, him in the New
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: York Post is framed. Like, he doesn't even realize that's
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: behind him as he's saying it.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: Little man. But I'm available, Spike. Seriously. I'll play it Italian. No,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: I just killed your fucking brain.
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: When you come to Sal's.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: There's no music, no rap, no music. No music.
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: Perfect.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: Perfect.
- 1:12:38Speaker 10: I like the theatricality of it, but it's the kind
- 1:12:40Speaker 10: of movie I.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Don't respond to.
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: Can you watch it just for Ozzie Davis and go like, wow,
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: this guy dies two years after this.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I like parts of it. I like parts of it.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: But I'm saying if you don't like it, can you
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: watch it and just follow a guy and fast forward
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: when he's not in? Like if you go, I'm just
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: going to watch Ozzie Davis's I like that storyline.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: What I don't like is.
- 1:13:08Speaker 5: The blacks.
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: Jesus Christ.
- 1:13:12Speaker 10: Is it adding up to a message that I don't
- 1:13:14Speaker 10: really know what to make of? Because I wouldn't ask
- 1:13:17Speaker 10: the question, did he do the right thing?
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: Not because....
- 1:13:23Speaker 10: It's just because I don't buy the world of the
- 1:13:25Speaker 10: story by that point. I'm really not believing the characters
- 1:13:29Speaker 10: all that much.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: I don't feel like I'm getting to know them better.
- 1:13:33Speaker 10: I feel the director manipulating the story and direction.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: Very heavy-handed.
- 1:13:40Speaker 10: That's the thing that I have trouble with. I just
- 1:13:43Speaker 10: feel the director taking me where he wants me to
- 1:13:47Speaker 10: go and making people say what he wants them to say.
- 1:13:51Speaker 10: When I think, really, people say a lot of stuff
- 1:13:55Speaker 10: that isn't really what they mean.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: In that movie, people seem to be saying what they
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: mean all the time. What are your favorite movies, Fred? Oh, wow,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: I've got a lot of favorite movies.
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: Just name a couple.
- 1:14:06Speaker 10: Well, okay, I'm going to write off all of science fiction.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: I don't like science fiction.
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: I'm with you.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: But my favorite science fiction, which I think is really horror.
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: You just wrote it off.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Well, it's on the borderline. It's the original Invasion of
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: the Body Snatchers. But it's really horror. It has a
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: science fiction thing to set it up. The one before
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: the Sutherland one? Or is it the southern one? I
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: don't know. No, the 40s. No.
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: Well, you never saw Rope.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: Don't give me a face.
- 1:14:34Speaker 10: Yeah, it's one of my favorite movies of all time.
- 1:14:39Speaker 10: A lot of favorite movies. We were talking, I'm the
- 1:14:42Speaker 10: only person in North America who's ever seen The Stone Boy.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: It's a great movie. Even people who are in it
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: laugh at it. It's like nobody ever saw that movie.
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: It's a great movie.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Name some of your favorite movies.
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: Okay. How did this become a long thing?
- 1:14:58Speaker 10: Uh, Tomorrow is a great movie. I don't even know
- 1:15:01Speaker 10: what that is. Robert Duvall plays an inarticulate mountain man.
- 1:15:06Speaker 10: It's based on a Faulkner short story.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: It sounds like something Will Ferrell would say on Conan.
- 1:15:11Speaker 19: Robert Duvall plays an inarticulate mountain man on Conan.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Did you see Get Low? He should have been nominated
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: for Get Low. Time to get low.
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: Did you see Get Low?
- 1:15:24Speaker 8: No.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: He was not nominated.
- 1:15:26Speaker 5: They've got something.
- 1:15:28Speaker 8: I think it got a lot of press that he
- 1:15:29Speaker 8: didn't get nominated.
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: He's the old crabby guy, hillbilly in town, and he
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: realizes everybody in town hates him, so he just fakes
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: his death.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: He wants to throw himself a giant.
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: He doesn't fake his death.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: I think I'm mistaken.
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: He realizes he'll never be able to see his funeral,
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: so he has his own funeral and attends it to
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: see what people... You should go up and say a
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: few words for me, though.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: Time for me to get going. Time for me to
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: get low. That's what he calls death. Time for me
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: to get low. Yeah.
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: Will you wrap up through the right thing?
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Fred will name a movie he likes that we've heard of.
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: Broadcast News.
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: A great movie. One of my all-time favorites.
- 1:16:14Speaker 16: I'll be the judge of that.
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: Holly Hunter?
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: Yeah. She's four foot one. She's on Small People, Big World.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: Coen Brothers movies. I love a lot of Coen Brothers movies.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: Didn't they just make a real stinker? I don't know.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: Just came out with something.
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: I love Barton Fink so much.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: The best part of Barton Fink, to me, is just
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: when Buscemi just keeps saying, my name's Chet.
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: My name's Chet. He writes it down. And then he
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: writes it down, and it's Chet! Exclamation point. I remember that.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: I love Steve Buscemi's stuff.
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: Steve Buscemi's so... You have no idea how funny he
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: is in real life.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: You could put him... on The Office.
- 1:16:59Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: And he would, you could put him in any comedy,
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: like Will Ferrell comedy, he would kill it.
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: So that's why I'm a happy friend with the fabulous
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: Burt Wonderstone.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: Ghost World. Ghost World is good. I really liked him
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: in that. He's, yeah, again. It's tipping automatically for the Burt's.
- 1:17:18Speaker 8: Oddly, sinners around him. He doesn't get movies very often.
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: The world's smallest violin.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: These girls bust their wrists. Besides waitressing, a girl that
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: didn't go to college. This is the only job they
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: can get. Give me my fucking book. Fucking Charlie Chan.
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: Alright, sorry. I'm sleep deprived. It's nap time.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: Let's wrap this up. I think we should. First of all,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: I'm thrilled that we got together. Thank you for having me.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: I was glad to have you. I was glad you
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: were up for it.
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: Now I'm going to start a Kickstarter account on Twitter
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: because I want to go to Hawaii.
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: Everyone's got these bullshit like, we're doing a student film, kickstart.
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: You know what?
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: Send me money because I want to stay at the
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: Four Seasons in the big room.
- 1:18:05Speaker 5: What kills me is.
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: They get the money.
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:18:08Speaker 18: There's so many of them that people actually donate.
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: I need 20 grand because I'm going to fly two
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: nannies with me.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: Nobody wants to donate money to us. I throw it
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: out there all the time.
- 1:18:18Speaker 8: We've got like one or two guys that actually donate.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Okay, I got an idea. You get a Kickstarter account
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: for your podcast, okay? We'll get a nice round number.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: Five grand. I'll live with that. For the three of
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: you guys to split.
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: And then film yourselves remaking Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: Underrated.
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: Lucy was just talking about that.
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: Underrated, right?
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: That was one of hers she would take in a
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: zombie apocalypse.
- 1:18:45Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: Underrated?
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: Underrated.
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: So if you can get, yeah, if you can get
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: people on board.
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: Bad Lieutenant. Which one? Under Overpush.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: There's only one.
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: Actually, you know what?
- 1:18:57Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: The second one was actually good. I didn't see the
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: second one. I didn't feel like seeing it. I think
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: you'll be pleasantly surprised.
- 1:19:04Speaker 5: Nick Cage is a guy I always want to mock,
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: and every time I watch him, I go, fucking guy
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: did it again. He got me.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: He's hit and miss. But when he hits, he hits.
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: Peggy Sue got married. Oh, Peggy Sue. He was incredible
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: in it.
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: And he was, you know what?
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: He sins bravely. He's like Reggie Jackson.
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: He swings for the fucking fence, and he may strike
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: out 3,000 times, but not in a row.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: Every once in a while, he gets one. Reggie Jackson
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: said to me, let me pick that up. I should
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: have dropped the name.
- 1:19:36Speaker 5: He said, I struck out 2,500 times in my career. Now,
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: I want you to think about that for a second.
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: That's five years I never touched a baseball.
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: But I didn't strike out in a row.
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: 2,500 at-bats a year. That's five years in a 22-year career.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: He never touched the ball. But you just spread, you
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: had to spread your misses out. You just keep at it.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: Never knock me down, Ray. Never knock me down.
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: Underrated. Hey, Ray.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: Yeah, that's one of my favorite movies.
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: I think it's the greatest movie of all time.
- 1:20:12Speaker 12: Which one?
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: It's my wife's favorite movie. And I'm so proud of that.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: Because she will not watch violence. They robbed us because
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: they're miserable because their.
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: Mother's taking up the fucking ass.
- 1:20:24Speaker 20: They're going to give him that fight because he's going
- 1:20:25Speaker 20: in the army next week.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: Stay in the ring. Dunk it out of the fucking ring.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: I know I've done a lot of bad things, Joey. Oh,
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: this was your fucking shot.
- 1:20:34Speaker 5: Pesci was great in that.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: Moriarty's like 30 playing 15. That's the only fatal flaw there.
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: She still looks good. The guy don't even want to
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: fuck me no more.
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: What do you think?
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: You're right.
- 1:20:43Speaker 5: You're not right.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: You're wrong. Yeah, I made a lot of money off
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: your brother.
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: More than.
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: Him. Bad Lieutenant Harvey Keitel.
- 1:20:51Speaker 5: Over under push.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: I'm going to say under.
- 1:20:55Speaker 5: What the fuck do you have to do to get
- 1:20:56Speaker 5: nominated for an Oscar? You jack off onto the side
- 1:21:00Speaker 5: of a car and you call Jesus a rat fuck.
- 1:21:03Speaker 5: Where the fuck were you?
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: You rat fuck!
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: Where the fuck were you?
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: I'm sorry!
- 1:21:11Speaker 5: In that scene... I'm sorry!
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: I've done so many bad things!
- 1:21:17Speaker 5: Then he kisses Jesus' feet as a homeless woman.
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: That's... That's one of my all-time favorites, too.
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: Bad Lieutenant.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: You know what?
- 1:21:27Speaker 5: Dude, the right thing just got fucking blasted out of
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: my head. Fuck you, the right thing.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: It sucks. It's like watching fucking Batman and Sesame Street.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: It is kind of like that.
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: I like when Spike Lee and John Turturro walk up
- 1:21:39Speaker 5: the wall of the building, but they tilt the camera sideways. Oh, yeah,
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: that's cool.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: They act like they're walking up a building. All right,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: I gotta go, gentlemen. All right. Thank you, Alan. Thank you, Brian.

- 1:22:00Speaker 17: Fuck you.
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: Oh, good.
- 1:22:02Speaker 10: I know I just need to go across the country
- 1:22:06Speaker 10: convincing people one by one.
- 1:22:09Speaker 8: Well, with that, I guess we should give him his
