Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: We often cover murders, kidnapping, sexual assault, survivor stories, and
- 0:12Speaker 1: much more. These stories, in these cases are often brutal
- 0:16Speaker 1: and gut wrenching, and they bring the horrors of the
- 0:20Speaker 1: true world to the forefront. But there are crimes out
- 0:24Speaker 1: there that tell a bit of a different tale. Heists
- 0:28Speaker 1: and robberies are a category of crime that tend to
- 0:31Speaker 1: go down in history as adventurous and mysterious. Even though
- 0:37Speaker 1: it still is crime, the stories behind them bring unmatched amazement,
- 0:44Speaker 1: even to cinema and Hollywood. Today, we'll be talking about
- 0:50Speaker 1: a bank heist that has gone down in history as
- 0:54Speaker 1: the robbery of the century.
- 0:57Speaker 2: My name's Ben and I'm Nicole, and you're listening to
- 1:00Speaker 2: Wicked and Grim, a true crime podcast.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Warning the following material in more mature audience listeners is
- 1:34Speaker 1: that an anniversary celebration drink.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I don't do as a zoo. It's just like it's
- 1:40Speaker 2: just a dead giveaway.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You don't pop it.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I'm terrible at opening cans.
- 1:44Speaker 1: You're just a slow popper.
- 1:45Speaker 2: But it kind of is. Last week was freaking awesome, and.
- 1:48Speaker 1: We're officially past our two year anniversary.
- 1:51Speaker 2: At us like we's got much on three years now
- 1:53Speaker 2: we are, right.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Pretty much, We're basically there. Happy three year anniversary.
- 1:58Speaker 2: It was kind of funny, so we did a Q
- 1:59Speaker 2: and a just answering Instagram store or like on Instagram stories. Yeah,
- 2:04Speaker 2: and one of the questions was about like I can't
- 2:07Speaker 2: remember who they worded it, but something like how what
- 2:09Speaker 2: is ben you?
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yeah? How buzzed am I usually recording? Surprisingly enough, I
- 2:15Speaker 1: don't think I've ever been other than the one drunk
- 2:17Speaker 1: episode we did for Patreon.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Yeah, drunk, WICKT and Grim. We're never but I've actually
- 2:21Speaker 2: gotten that question before too, Like people legitimately think that
- 2:25Speaker 2: we're like buzz, but.
- 2:27Speaker 1: This is just us, just a straight up alcoholic show
- 2:30Speaker 1: going on behind the scenes.
- 2:32Speaker 2: That is not the case. We just are so pumped
- 2:34Speaker 2: to be here right exactly.
- 2:36Speaker 1: We love it and just have some drinks, but we
- 2:38Speaker 1: never have time to actually, if you're telling the story,
- 2:40Speaker 1: there's never any time to actually have drinks. It's like
- 2:42Speaker 1: you get a sip or two exactly.
- 2:44Speaker 2: But I also just thought of an amazing merch idea
- 2:46Speaker 2: too that we should have, like to chink wishket and
- 2:49Speaker 2: Grim or how would you how would you word that?
- 2:52Speaker 1: Could it'd be like k C. H. The c c
- 2:57Speaker 1: K or something like that.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I don't know, but yeah, ad on a T shirt
- 3:01Speaker 2: with like wicked Ingram.

- 3:48Speaker 1: recommending our another case down the road here soon. This
- 3:51Speaker 1: was specifically from Patreon.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I'm pumped because it's long overdue.
- 3:55Speaker 1: It's a good one.
- 3:57Speaker 2: You haven't where do we just been buzzkills lately? I
- 4:00Speaker 2: feel like pretty much so we need something that's a
- 4:04Speaker 2: little bit more upbeat here. I'm excited.
- 4:06Speaker 1: You should be because because it's good. I didn't check levels.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Can you give me a quick check check check one, two, three.

- 4:15Speaker 2: Our patreons usually get that. They do, our patrons, I
- 4:18Speaker 2: was called them patreons. Our patrons usually get that in
- 4:21Speaker 2: our pre shows.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Our patrons of Patreon, they get it.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And I just say one thing really quickly, you can.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I'm sure we have two dogs that snuggle together.
- 4:33Speaker 1: We do.
- 4:33Speaker 2: That needs to be announced to the whole fucking world,
- 4:35Speaker 2: because that's a dream of mine come true.
- 4:37Speaker 1: They were under a single blanket on a single dog bed.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Earlier, and my heart is just like it doesn't exist anymore.
- 4:42Speaker 2: It's just like evaporated. I'm just so excited.
- 4:45Speaker 1: It was pretty fantastic.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I just needed to share that.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Well, well, thank you for sharing, because I, for one
- 4:50Speaker 1: did not know that occurred. I was sitting right there
- 4:52Speaker 1: and I didn't know, and I needed you to tell me.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I know, oh yeah, because I wasn't talking about it
- 4:56Speaker 2: for fucking ten minutes straight.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Definitely not will probably post that picture she took in
- 5:01Speaker 1: Patreon knowing her.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Oh actually, yeah, good idea. I'm gonna do that after this.
- 5:04Speaker 1: There we go. Okay, speaking of after this, we need
- 5:08Speaker 1: to get to this, ready for it? Okay, So I'm
- 5:12Speaker 1: going to start off painting a little bit of a
- 5:13Speaker 1: different picture here before we get into our actual case.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Do it?
- 5:16Speaker 1: Okay, So we're starting off with the Romalio bank heist.
- 5:21Speaker 1: It was a robbery in Argentina that went wrong and
- 5:25Speaker 1: ended up in a shootout between the robbers and the police,
- 5:29Speaker 1: a shootout that left one robber and two civilians dead.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Oh I thought you said no one died.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Not in the case recovering. I'm doing a pre set
- 5:39Speaker 1: up with a different case communition. It's all good, okay.
- 5:44Speaker 1: The heist was unsuccessful, but it did represent something the
- 5:49Speaker 1: public's growing dislike and distrust towards the banks in Argentina. Now,
- 5:55Speaker 1: considering there were casualties and a shootout, the response from
- 5:58Speaker 1: the police regarding the situation had been well, quite brutal.
- 6:02Speaker 1: In fact effective, mind you, but brutal. Though they were
- 6:07Speaker 1: successful in stopping the robbery, it left that dark mark
- 6:10Speaker 1: on law enforcement's reputation. But it wasn't enough to stop
- 6:14Speaker 1: a dreamer from dreaming up the perfect plan.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:19Speaker 1: It would be January thirteenth, two thousand and six, when
- 6:23Speaker 1: this dreamer put his plan into action.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Okay, this is not that long ago, No, it's not. Wow.
- 6:29Speaker 1: It was another bank heist that was inspired by the
- 6:31Speaker 1: one I just talked about, but this time it would end.
- 6:35Speaker 1: It would not end in a shootout. This time they
- 6:38Speaker 1: would be successful, and this time they would get away
- 6:42Speaker 1: without being caught.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Wow.
- 6:43Speaker 1: At least that was his plan. Okay, so that's kind
- 6:49Speaker 1: of actually exactly what happened. The police got a call
- 6:52Speaker 1: regarding a bank robbery at Bonco Rio, a bank located
- 6:57Speaker 1: in a very wealthy neighborhood, at twelve thirty eight. The
- 7:01Speaker 1: police were ready to take down the robbers like last time,
- 7:04Speaker 1: though they planned on being a little less aggressive this
- 7:07Speaker 1: time due to the public backlash since the last one.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Four robbers were in the bank with twenty three hostages.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Wow. That's a lot of lives on the line there,
- 7:18Speaker 2: it is. I already have a really quick question, my apologies.
- 7:22Speaker 1: What's up.
- 7:22Speaker 2: They were mad at the police because there was two
- 7:25Speaker 2: civilians that got killed. That's kind of was the problem.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Yeah, because of the aggression of the police, right.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, I just wanted to make sure I understood.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah, because of the force used behind stopping.
- 7:36Speaker 2: The robbery, Okay, yeah, okay.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So the four robbers were in the bank, they secured
- 7:42Speaker 1: the entire building. The police surrounded it and covered its
- 7:47Speaker 1: only two exits, the front and the back door, along
- 7:50Speaker 1: with many windows of course as well.
- 7:52Speaker 2: So how could they get out?
- 7:53Speaker 1: Really well, they had over a hundred officers of this
- 7:59Speaker 1: fucking building.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Shit, is that what happens if something else went down
- 8:03Speaker 2: in that city? They're fucked well very much police.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And they even had snipers on building surrounding as backup.
- 8:13Speaker 1: The business they did. They were not wanting to use force,
- 8:16Speaker 1: but they were very well prepared to so through communications,
- 8:20Speaker 1: the officers were going back and forth negotiating with the
- 8:23Speaker 1: robbers inside the bank. One of the robbers who was
- 8:26Speaker 1: using a code name Walter, which I just got to say,
- 8:30Speaker 1: he could have used many cooler code names. Fucking code
- 8:33Speaker 1: name Hawk, I don't know, black, Raven, some cool shit,
- 8:37Speaker 1: I'm not sure, but Walter.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Hey, my mind went to Walter White, and I was like, yeah,
- 8:41Speaker 2: that's a good name.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I don't know, I would have done something cool, I
- 8:45Speaker 1: don't know, soaring Eagle.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Wow, poor Walters. I don't know, he's a cool name.
- 8:50Speaker 1: He could have picked something better. It's just it's a
- 8:52Speaker 1: generic name, you know what I mean?
- 8:54Speaker 2: No, I get it, I get it.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Call me toy soldier. I don't fucking know. Just something exciting. Anyways,
- 9:01Speaker 1: Walter was talking with the cops and they agreed to
- 9:04Speaker 1: let three of the hostages go, starting with a bank
- 9:07Speaker 1: security guard and then a young man, followed by a
- 9:09Speaker 1: young woman. Everything was going well. The cops were happy
- 9:14Speaker 1: that they were managing to start convincing them to let
- 9:16Speaker 1: hostages go, and they were being released little by little,
- 9:20Speaker 1: and even the robbers seemed to be in good spirits.
- 9:23Speaker 2: So oddly enough, I'm very interested that a security guard
- 9:27Speaker 2: was one of the first to go out. Why is that, Well,
- 9:30Speaker 2: I don't know. I almost feel like that person needs
- 9:32Speaker 2: to stay in there and try to protect shit.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Is he going to protect?
- 9:36Speaker 2: I guess I don't know. That just surprised me, like
- 9:38Speaker 2: I would just feel like the random customers would be
- 9:41Speaker 2: going out first.
- 9:42Speaker 1: But I don't know exactly how the negotiations occurred that way.
- 9:48Speaker 1: But yeah, but yeah, everyone was in good spirits for it.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I'm sure the security guard was quite in good spirits
- 9:54Speaker 1: too getting let out of the building. But everyone was
- 9:57Speaker 1: kind of like happy, it seemed, even though they were
- 10:00Speaker 1: surrounded by over one hundred police officers outside, given to
- 10:04Speaker 1: the point that they actually sang happy birthday to one
- 10:06Speaker 1: of the hostages when they found out it was a
- 10:08Speaker 1: birthday inside.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Seriously, seriously, Okay, this is odd.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Yeah, they're like, oh, it's your birthday. Fucking happy birthday,
- 10:15Speaker 1: but order.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Them a goddamn cake and the same sentence.
- 10:19Speaker 1: No not cake. But at about three point thirty, Walter
- 10:21Speaker 1: got the police to order pizza for all the hostages
- 10:23Speaker 1: in the bank, as they were all getting hungry.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Oh shit, I was just making that pizza thing up. No,
- 10:28Speaker 2: we're sorry, the cake thing. But they actually ordered them food.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe they ordered thirty pizzas.
- 10:34Speaker 2: So they're having a pizza party.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Pretty much, and to which the police complied. But not
- 10:40Speaker 1: long after that pizza ordered pizza was order went through,
- 10:43Speaker 1: though things changed. Okay, the robbers fell silent and no
- 10:50Speaker 1: longer were communicating with officers outside.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Uh oh.
- 10:54Speaker 1: It would be seven pm by the time that the
- 10:57Speaker 1: police made their push into the bank to find the hostages.
- 10:59Speaker 1: After a couple hours of radio silence. It was three
- 11:02Speaker 1: point thirty, so two and a half hours of nothing
- 11:05Speaker 1: from these robbers inside, no communication, no negotiations. They tried
- 11:10Speaker 1: phoning them repeatedly, nothing just dead air exactly. So they decided,
- 11:16Speaker 1: we got to make a push, we got to do something,
- 11:18Speaker 1: we got to go in. So they did. They pushed
- 11:21Speaker 1: into the bank, made their way in and found the
- 11:24Speaker 1: hostages and the robbers were nowhere to be found.
- 11:28Speaker 2: That's a long time, though. I just have to say,
- 11:30Speaker 2: it'll be waiting here. And who knows that people were
- 11:33Speaker 2: getting hurt and shit, well, you have.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Like twenty people's lives on the line here. There's no gunshots,
- 11:38Speaker 1: no nothing being heard.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Still, you can die in other ways, It's true, okay,
- 11:43Speaker 2: but so all the hostages are there, no robbers, correct.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And you also have to remember the police are trying
- 11:50Speaker 1: to walk on thin ice here because they're not wanting
- 11:52Speaker 1: to have that public backlash and put people's lives in danger.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So making a push inside could put people's lives in danger.
- 11:58Speaker 2: They are in a tricky position.
- 12:00Speaker 1: So sure, so they went inside, they looked around, they
- 12:03Speaker 1: couldn't find anyone. They just disappeared, along with the contents
- 12:09Speaker 1: of one hundred and forty three safety deposit boxes from
- 12:12Speaker 1: the bank's basement. Oh, one hundred and forty three out
- 12:16Speaker 1: of a total of four hundred safety deposit boxes were
- 12:19Speaker 1: broken into and the contents stolen.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Yikes. I would imagine those would be hard to get into.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and they are bank security safety depositbs.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and people store some probably pretty valuables in there.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I don't even know if that was still exist to
- 12:32Speaker 2: this day. Do they?
- 12:33Speaker 1: Oh they do?
- 12:34Speaker 2: Ok? Yeah, I remember my parents having one, but like,
- 12:39Speaker 2: I've never thought to have one of my own. Maybe
- 12:41Speaker 2: I don't have anything to store in there that's valuable.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Well, well, we'll get into that a little bit on
- 12:46Speaker 1: why they went for the safety deposit box. Okay, So
- 12:50Speaker 1: there was no sign on how they left. The building
- 12:53Speaker 1: was surrounded. Police were perplexed and they're like, how did
- 12:56Speaker 1: they get out? And once it was released that they
- 13:00Speaker 1: didn't know where these guys went, this became known as
- 13:04Speaker 1: the robbery of the century.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Wow, it's like they just disappeared.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yeah, and before anyone's thinking, no, they were not hiding
- 13:12Speaker 1: amongst the hostages. Police did check.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I would never even thought of that.
- 13:18Speaker 1: That was my first thought when I was researching holy.
- 13:20Speaker 2: That would be smart, I mean something, someone would give
- 13:24Speaker 2: it away for sure, exactly.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Eventually, though, they would discover how the robbers exited the
- 13:30Speaker 1: building and got away. They would discover, in fact, how
- 13:33Speaker 1: everything played out and how these robbers almost got away
- 13:37Speaker 1: with the perfect crime. Let's rewind the clock a bit.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Let's go back to our dreamer who was inspired by
- 13:44Speaker 1: the previous bank robbery. That dreamer was Fernando. I'm going
- 13:49Speaker 1: to butcher his last name and I'm gonna try a
- 13:51Speaker 1: rajo Fernando, Fernando, I like that name. He watched televised
- 13:57Speaker 1: recordings of that old bank that he was inspired the
- 14:00Speaker 1: bank robbery, sorry, the Ramagalio bank heist, and his mind
- 14:04Speaker 1: took off. What he really wanted to know was if
- 14:08Speaker 1: there was a way to pull off a bank heist successfully,
- 14:12Speaker 1: And he knew just the person who would potentially be
- 14:15Speaker 1: able to help answer that question, because the previous one
- 14:19Speaker 1: was not successful and did in a shootout robbers got caught. Yeah,
- 14:24Speaker 1: so his friend Sebastian Garcia Bolster was the one who
- 14:28Speaker 1: he thought would be able to help him answer this question.
- 14:31Speaker 2: And why is that?
- 14:32Speaker 1: Well, Fernando and Sebastian first of all, They've been friends
- 14:35Speaker 1: for a long time since high school in fact, so
- 14:37Speaker 1: Fernando knew that he could just ask Sebastian pretty much
- 14:40Speaker 1: just about anything.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Wow.
- 14:42Speaker 1: One day, when the two men were spending some time
- 14:44Speaker 1: together in what I imagine would be akin to an
- 14:47Speaker 1: ocean's eleven montage, Fernando ran the idea by Sebastian and
- 14:52Speaker 1: waited to see if it'd stick, and he said, quote,
- 14:57Speaker 1: I would be crazy. It would be crazy to rob
- 14:59Speaker 1: a bank but not leave to disappear through a hole.
- 15:06Speaker 1: That's what he said. But Sebastian didn't take the idea seriously.
- 15:11Speaker 1: He just kind of laughed and agreed. Fernando had a
- 15:14Speaker 1: reputation of being a dreamer. He'd always been a dreamer,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and Sebastian thought that Fernando was just dreaming again, or
- 15:21Speaker 1: maybe he just was lost in another weed induced tangent,
- 15:24Speaker 1: which was normal for Fernando because he had always been
- 15:28Speaker 1: a bit of a free flowing, weed smoking, creative thinker basically,
- 15:33Speaker 1: and recently his ideas had been getting wilder and wilder. See,
- 15:38Speaker 1: Fernando was going through a breakup and Sebastian thought, you know,
- 15:41Speaker 1: that was his latest idea, robbing a bank, and it
- 15:45Speaker 1: was just something that Fernando was using to focus on
- 15:47Speaker 1: while working through his feelings, which I mean is very,
- 15:51Speaker 1: very much so understandable. I mean, how many of us,
- 15:55Speaker 1: after watching you, said Walter So, after watching Breaking Bad,
- 15:58Speaker 1: were like I should start a meth lab, sell meth.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Oh you one hundred percent were, And I actually thought
- 16:04Speaker 2: you were freaking serious because you're like, yeah, let's just
- 16:06Speaker 2: do it for a few months. And I'm like, that's
- 16:07Speaker 2: not how it works, Like you don't just fucking do
- 16:10Speaker 2: it for a few months.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I'm aware, trust me, Walter White taught me that.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, but I watched that show and I was like,
- 16:16Speaker 2: what were they dissolving the bodies in?
- 16:18Speaker 1: Oh? It is some form of acid?
- 16:19Speaker 2: And I was like, fuck, we need to start buying
- 16:21Speaker 2: just acid randomly, just a store.
- 16:24Speaker 1: We need to stalk this shit up.
- 16:25Speaker 2: And You're like why, and I'm like, I don't know,
- 16:28Speaker 2: just in case we ever need it.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Seeing that's exactly that our minds just latch onto this
- 16:34Speaker 1: creative idea, whether we're serious or not, and we just
- 16:36Speaker 1: kind of go off like, hey, wouldn't it be cool
- 16:38Speaker 1: if hypothetically Yeah, And that's kind of all I thought
- 16:42Speaker 1: was happening here.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I mean, you'd make a lot of money. And lots
- 16:44Speaker 2: of times people you know, they have debt or whatever
- 16:47Speaker 2: they want to pay off, or they want to buy
- 16:48Speaker 2: a vacation home, or they want to do this or that,
- 16:50Speaker 2: and you're dreaming about making big money.
- 16:52Speaker 1: There you go. Yeah, so that's.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Exactly everyone dreams about making big money.
- 16:56Speaker 1: That's exactly it here. The only thing is Sebastian thought
- 16:59Speaker 1: for Nanda was just doing that dreaming. Fernando, on the other.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Hand, like, no, I'm serious.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Yeah, the truth was much more than just a wild
- 17:08Speaker 1: idea induced by the devil's lettuce.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I think we generally dream about winning
- 17:13Speaker 2: the lottery, not necessarily robbing a bank.
- 17:15Speaker 1: True, but if you have something to influence it, right yeah.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:21Speaker 1: So anyways, he was serious and if Fernando was ever
- 17:24Speaker 1: going to start actually pulling this off, he needed Sebastian's help. Now,
- 17:29Speaker 1: getting onto why he needed Sebastian's help to start off,
- 17:33Speaker 1: Sebastian was a law abiding citizen, not really the kind
- 17:36Speaker 1: of guy you'd imagine wanting to get involved in a
- 17:38Speaker 1: wild bank heist. But Fernando did need him. He knew
- 17:42Speaker 1: that he could trust Sebastian, for one, to have his
- 17:44Speaker 1: back on the job, and he knew that Sebastian had
- 17:47Speaker 1: the certain skill sets that he would need. And those
- 17:51Speaker 1: skill sets were he was a a very good mechanic
- 17:55Speaker 1: and perhaps more importantly, b he was a fantastic engineer.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Okay, I was wondering what kind of skills he had. Okay, yeah, yeah,
- 18:04Speaker 2: those would be ones you'd probably want for this.
- 18:05Speaker 1: One hundred percent. He spent a lot of time, you know,
- 18:09Speaker 1: building and repairing things like engines, motorcycles, jet skis, coming
- 18:13Speaker 1: up with designs for apparently a homemade helicopter.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Even Wow, yeah, that's actually really impressive, no kidding.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I can barely figure out how helicopters fly.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Let alone designing ones, So yeah, no kidding.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Fernando persisted on Sebastian even though he had this rejection.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Fernando in fact doubled down, using the fact that he
- 18:35Speaker 1: couldn't get his best friend to join him on the
- 18:37Speaker 1: heist as a main reason why he needed to perfect
- 18:40Speaker 1: his plan to go back to the drawing board make
- 18:43Speaker 1: sure he had a good plan before he approached Sebastian.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Again, Wow, he's really not giving up here.
- 18:48Speaker 1: He's not. He learned anything and everything he could about
- 18:53Speaker 1: previous bank heists from any source he could, even fictional ones.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Wow.
- 18:59Speaker 1: He watched every movie, documentary, TV show, news interviews. He
- 19:04Speaker 1: stayed up for nights on end listening to classical music,
- 19:08Speaker 1: apparently all along the way to help keep his focus
- 19:11Speaker 1: until he had the perfect plan.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Did you have a job? I didn't find that like
- 19:19Speaker 2: his job, but I'm also going to have to try that.
- 19:21Speaker 2: So he listened to classical music just kind of stay
- 19:24Speaker 2: on track here, Yeah, because I sometimes I'm like, why
- 19:27Speaker 2: am I not working? Like I'm just all over the place.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Maybe I should try that.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Well, I mean a lot of people do focus differently, right,
- 19:33Speaker 1: I know, for me, I put on music lots when
- 19:35Speaker 1: I'm trying to focus, like the low fide chill hop
- 19:38Speaker 1: and shit on YouTube.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Fucking love that that's your classical music.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Well not necessarily, because I do listen to cla classical
- 19:45Speaker 1: music sometimes too, Like Frank Sinatra. Yeah, ring, No, I've
- 19:50Speaker 1: just lost the lyrics. Fly there we go, fly me
- 19:53Speaker 1: to them. I just I listened to Frank Sinatra, but
- 19:56Speaker 1: I don't know the lyrics for shit. Yeah. So yeah, anyways,
- 20:01Speaker 1: we all have different things that make his focus for
- 20:03Speaker 1: him classical music. Maybe you should try it.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I know, well, I'm like, I don't have anything. I
- 20:07Speaker 2: got to figure that out. We have drinking that only
- 20:12Speaker 2: lasts so long and then you're just like not okay.
- 20:15Speaker 1: And then you're no longer focused at all at all.
- 20:20Speaker 1: So anyways, Fernando went back to his friend Sebastian. He
- 20:24Speaker 1: laid his cards all out on the table and explained
- 20:26Speaker 1: that he needed Sebastian to be on board so that
- 20:28Speaker 1: they could handle this technology side and with the two
- 20:31Speaker 1: of them they could pull it off. This time, things
- 20:35Speaker 1: went a bit different. Sebastian was listening.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, because he's like, okay, my crazy friend
- 20:41Speaker 2: Sirius here.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, both of these individuals and their families had
- 20:47Speaker 1: They were pretty well off when they were growing up,
- 20:49Speaker 1: giving a pair of them a good middle upper class childhood.
- 20:52Speaker 1: But the more recent year, Sebastian's family specifically had started
- 20:56Speaker 1: to endure economical pressures. It wasn't there, mind you, I
- 21:01Speaker 1: mean not really. They, like many Argentinian families, had put
- 21:05Speaker 1: their money in the bank, but crashes and corruption had
- 21:10Speaker 1: led many banks to closing, and many families were left
- 21:13Speaker 1: without their savings dang.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Yeah, which, yeah, that's hard. So he probably felt like
- 21:20Speaker 2: he was a kind of some money back, right, Yeah.
- 21:23Speaker 1: So this was a hard time. Yeah, it is a
- 21:25Speaker 1: depression Argentina. Argentina was massive depression. With their currency and
- 21:31Speaker 1: the paeso. At the time, it was about as reliable
- 21:34Speaker 1: as a logan Paul Nft pretty much freaking yeah.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Yeah you went there, right, I did.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sorry. I'm really proud of that joke. If
- 21:43Speaker 1: you know, you know, If not, it it's funny. Just
- 21:47Speaker 1: trust me on that.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Just google it, or should you even google it?
- 21:50Speaker 1: Just don't even it's a whole other rabbit hole YouTuber
- 21:54Speaker 1: who's going to court and.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Getting it in some big trouble. Yeah, big trouble.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Pump pump and dump an Nft basically anyways, a fan
- 22:04Speaker 1: of him, No, not, many people are only twelve year
- 22:06Speaker 1: old kids, I think. Anyways, we digress. Sebastian's father and
- 22:11Speaker 1: grandfather were two of those people who were left financially
- 22:13Speaker 1: high and drive from these banks. That's what it's basically
- 22:15Speaker 1: trying to get out and say. So, when Fernando laid
- 22:17Speaker 1: out his plans, his well thought, oh plans, I should
- 22:20Speaker 1: say to Sebastian the second time around, he saw a
- 22:24Speaker 1: chance to get even to those institutions who hurt his family.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Just like you say, he felt like he was owed
- 22:29Speaker 1: this money. So Sebastian was in, but he had a condition,
- 22:35Speaker 1: under no circumstances would the heist include guns or any
- 22:40Speaker 1: other kind of violence, And then Fernando would have his
- 22:43Speaker 1: engineer on board.
- 22:46Speaker 2: So he agreed, Okay, can I I'm just like, do
- 22:48Speaker 2: you have a friend that you would just be able
- 22:50Speaker 2: to be like, let's rob a bank? Dude?
- 22:51Speaker 1: Probably you.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Actually yeah, yeah, if you were this detailed and had
- 22:58Speaker 2: this thought of and I brought, I might I might
- 23:01Speaker 2: actually be into it, which I should probably not admit
- 23:04Speaker 2: on here. We're not criminals.
- 23:06Speaker 1: We're definitely not. But if someone else starts doing a
- 23:10Speaker 1: podcast episode on the podcast host who robbed a bank,
- 23:13Speaker 1: you know what happened. Oh my gosh. So anyways, they
- 23:18Speaker 1: agreed plans were starting to get followed and they wouldn't
- 23:22Speaker 1: be needing guns anyways, they didn't plan on relying on violence.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Okay, I like that.
- 23:26Speaker 1: He told Sebastian that he wanted to dig a tunnel
- 23:28Speaker 1: into the bank. That way they could sneak in steal
- 23:31Speaker 1: the money and use the tunnel to get back out
- 23:33Speaker 1: without getting caught or in a gunfight or anything.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Wow, So there was even a long system of storm
- 23:41Speaker 1: dream tunnels that they decided they were going to rely
- 23:43Speaker 1: on and could use that would lead pretty much right
- 23:46Speaker 1: under the bank, and then they could dig from that
- 23:48Speaker 1: storm drain tunnel into the bank, so it would only
- 23:51Speaker 1: be a short distance. Wow.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Okay, that's amazing.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Yeah. There was one glaring problem at this time, though,
- 23:59Speaker 1: the bank's altars. How would they do this without setting
- 24:01Speaker 1: off crazy alarms? And then you know the banks being like, oh,
- 24:06Speaker 1: people are inside and this is exactly where they are
- 24:08Speaker 1: people and police rush in, right. That was a big problem.
- 24:12Speaker 1: So they decided to go on an outside of the
- 24:15Speaker 1: box answer, but one that's also so obvious. At the
- 24:20Speaker 1: same time, they were going to pull off the heist
- 24:23Speaker 1: during the day when the bank was open and the
- 24:26Speaker 1: alarm systems were not activated.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Oh okay, so those alarm systems are mostly only activated
- 24:33Speaker 2: when they're closed, when no one's there.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I think, like the laser beams shooting around and shit, right, wow,
- 24:38Speaker 1: security cameras and stuff. Sure, but they're not going to
- 24:40Speaker 1: have it inside a vault per say, where they're digging.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Huh okay, I like this. This is really thinking outside
- 24:48Speaker 2: the box. This guy spent a lot of time on this.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Oh they did, they very much, so did so they
- 24:55Speaker 1: That was one part of the puzzle solved. But it
- 24:57Speaker 1: did also raise a few problems. If they dug tunnel
- 25:00Speaker 1: into the bank in the middle of the day, then
- 25:02Speaker 1: eventually someone one of the bank workers would bound to
- 25:06Speaker 1: notice someone digging into the fucking bank and they would
- 25:09Speaker 1: physically raise an alarm, right exactly. But Fernando had a
- 25:13Speaker 1: plan for that too, and this is where the true
- 25:17Speaker 1: genius of the plan takes place. They would pull off
- 25:21Speaker 1: not one, but two bank heists simultaneously in the same bank. Okay,
- 25:29Speaker 1: do tell one upstairs on the bank's main floor, and
- 25:33Speaker 1: the second in the basement below.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Okay. And in the basement below, people wouldn't notice.
- 25:41Speaker 1: That's what they're after, yes, okay, okay. So, after all
- 25:44Speaker 1: these problems that Argentinians had going through the banks, most
- 25:47Speaker 1: people had taken their money out and exchanged it for
- 25:51Speaker 1: other kinds of valuables that they'd trade for things like gold, jewelry,
- 25:58Speaker 1: and they put them where.
- 26:00Speaker 2: In their fucking safety deposit in the.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Safety deposit boxes, which were stored in the basement, in
- 26:07Speaker 1: the fucking basement.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Oh shit. But this is kind of sad though, because
- 26:13Speaker 2: like these people are well, I don't know, they were
- 26:17Speaker 2: already kind of struggling or feeling the depression you said, right,
- 26:22Speaker 2: or the sorts, and now their valuables are up.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Yes, but no, the bank they chose, as I mentioned,
- 26:30Speaker 1: but I didn't talk a lot about it. I mentioned
- 26:32Speaker 1: this bank is in a very wealthy neighborhood.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Oh okay, you did mention that actually at the beginning. Yeah.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Yes, So they were pretty sure that most these people
- 26:40Speaker 1: were very well off. In fact, like it's surrounded by
- 26:43Speaker 1: like golf courses and shit, like, it's very wealthy neighborhood,
- 26:46Speaker 1: very wealthy bank. So they weren't too concerned, almost kind
- 26:50Speaker 1: of like a robin hood stealing from the rich, except
- 26:52Speaker 1: in not giving it to the port, they're just giving
- 26:53Speaker 1: it to themselves.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Okay, So they kind of chose this this bank for
- 26:58Speaker 2: a few reasons then, because they knew there'd be a
- 27:00Speaker 2: lot of stuff in there that they could take, but
- 27:03Speaker 2: then it wouldn't also be affecting these people's lives too much.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Exactly, okay. Yeah, So the plan was while Sebastian was
- 27:11Speaker 1: tunneling into the banks, into the basement and breaking into
- 27:15Speaker 1: safety deposit boxes, Fernando would stage the distraction heist upstairs,
- 27:22Speaker 1: pretending to want to steal the cash and the actual
- 27:24Speaker 1: money from the bank, keeping the employees stationary so they
- 27:28Speaker 1: won't discover what's going on in the basement, and the
- 27:31Speaker 1: authority's busy, giving Sebastian enough time to actually steal from
- 27:36Speaker 1: the safety deposit boxes below.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Is there only literally two people involved in this so far? Okay,
- 27:44Speaker 2: because that's shocking to me if that's the case.
- 27:47Speaker 1: No, so far, we get more people here. I'm just
- 27:50Speaker 1: getting into that. So you're on the right track here.
- 27:54Speaker 1: So Sebastian got to work planning the whole tunnel thing.
- 27:57Speaker 1: He'd drive down to the tunnel entrance near the coast,
- 28:00Speaker 1: and under the cover of darkness, he would sneak into
- 28:02Speaker 1: the drain and head off towards the targeted bank in
- 28:05Speaker 1: Buenos Aires, and almost a thirty minute walk later, through
- 28:09Speaker 1: a dark, wet drainage system, he would find his location.
- 28:13Speaker 2: That's terrifying in itself, isn't it. Ugh Like he never
- 28:17Speaker 2: catch me doing that?
- 28:18Speaker 1: And then From there, Fernando got to work on his
- 28:22Speaker 1: side of the plants. He knew that if he was
- 28:24Speaker 1: supposed to pull off a convincing cover heist, then he'd
- 28:29Speaker 1: have to make it look real queueing another Ocean's eleven
- 28:32Speaker 1: montage scene. He went to two season bank robbers, a
- 28:37Speaker 1: man everyone called Doc and his close associatey Ruben Alberto
- 28:43Speaker 1: de la Torre, otherwise known as Beto. So Doc and
- 28:48Speaker 1: Beto had been part of a wild and famous bank
- 28:53Speaker 1: robbery scheme stuff in their past. As it is already,
- 28:58Speaker 1: they were a band of robbers who pulled off heists
- 29:00Speaker 1: after heist during the eighties and nineties, most of them
- 29:03Speaker 1: quite violent, mind you. But when Fernando went to them
- 29:06Speaker 1: with his plan, and with Sebastian's condition that there would
- 29:09Speaker 1: be no violence this time around, the pair of them agreed.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Everyone knew that if they managed to pull this off,
- 29:15Speaker 1: they'd walk away with potentially millions of dollars each. So
- 29:19Speaker 1: Doc and Bato were just happy to go along with
- 29:21Speaker 1: whatever Fernando needed them to do.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Well, yeah, and I imagine asking them would be a
- 29:26Speaker 2: very easy yes of getting their cooperation with this.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Pretty much some old school bank robbers wanted to get
- 29:32Speaker 1: back into it. Maybe Yeah, it'd be like twist my
- 29:34Speaker 1: rubber arm, go for it.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Holy heck, I cannot believe these people, Like just the
- 29:41Speaker 2: thought they put into this is unbelievable.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's wild. It's thoroughly thought through.
- 29:48Speaker 2: And I also have to say, well done with the
- 29:50Speaker 2: pronunciation here, thank you, you're killing it.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate you.
- 29:53Speaker 2: I'm actually just like really impressed with that.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Means a lot, thank you. So that was one team sorted,
- 30:01Speaker 1: and Sebastian was working on the tunnel. It looked like
- 30:04Speaker 1: all the rest of the crew all they had to
- 30:06Speaker 1: do was just wait. But that took time, and it
- 30:11Speaker 1: also took money, money they didn't really have. Robbing a
- 30:17Speaker 1: bank apparently isn't cheap in itself. So Fernando sold his car,
- 30:22Speaker 1: pored everything he had in keeping the operation afloat, but
- 30:26Speaker 1: they would quickly run out of funds.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Oh wait, that's shocking. They're really invested in.
- 30:30Speaker 1: This, literally invested.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Yes, huh okay, that's interesting to me that he'd like
- 30:36Speaker 2: sell all the shit. Wow.
- 30:38Speaker 1: So they knew that they needed to get more money,
- 30:40Speaker 1: and they needed to get it from somewhere if they
- 30:42Speaker 1: were going to keep at it. He also knew that
- 30:44Speaker 1: he couldn't exactly go to the bank to get to
- 30:47Speaker 1: rob a bank for their money. It's kind of a
- 30:50Speaker 1: conundrument itself. There, a little bit of an oxymoron. So
- 30:53Speaker 1: he went to the next best thing. Louis Mario vittti cls.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I butchered the last name.
- 31:01Speaker 2: You jinxed shit I did. That's all my fault.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Salinus, So Louis Mario v the teddy Salanus.
- 31:10Speaker 2: There you go, there you go, you got it out.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Louis Louis was another old acquaintance of Doc and another
- 31:17Speaker 1: renowned thief himself, and.
- 31:19Speaker 2: He had some money well.
- 31:21Speaker 1: In the nineteen nineties and two thousands. Louis would scale
- 31:25Speaker 1: apartment buildings mission impossible style, sliding down ropes and breaking
- 31:29Speaker 1: into places and stealing thousands of dollars worth of possessions,
- 31:33Speaker 1: only to spend his earnings, I mean just as quickly
- 31:35Speaker 1: on drugs and alcohol. But he had also been caught
- 31:38Speaker 1: and arrested. But with all these skills and things he
- 31:41Speaker 1: stole and basically a career of it, he did have
- 31:45Speaker 1: a small fortune stuffed away still really yes, and he
- 31:48Speaker 1: made a comfortable life when he was eventually released from prison.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Huh.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Okay, so for the most part he had retired from
- 31:57Speaker 1: the life of crime, but when Doc put Fernando in
- 32:00Speaker 1: Louis together in the same.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Room, he wasn't retired anymore.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Yeah, he decided he was ready to come out of retirement.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that just the described description of him gave
- 32:11Speaker 2: me like bedroom strangler vibes, but without the strangulation, which
- 32:15Speaker 2: is good.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Fair enough. The whole creeping into apartments.
- 32:19Speaker 2: And the scaling buildings, you know, love that.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Well. Louis may not have been the bedroom strangler, but
- 32:25Speaker 1: he did become their investor and the source of their
- 32:28Speaker 1: funds for the operation. Okay, So the first thing Fernando
- 32:31Speaker 1: did when he got this investor involved and he had
- 32:34Speaker 1: some money in hand, was immediately he went to another
- 32:38Speaker 1: branch of Banco Rio, the same chain of bank that
- 32:40Speaker 1: they were planning on targeting. And this is where even
- 32:44Speaker 1: more genius comes in. This is where he rented out
- 32:48Speaker 1: a safety deposit box.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Oh seriously, yep.
- 32:52Speaker 1: But the truth was he was more interested in the
- 32:55Speaker 1: box itself than story. Yeah, exactly, because he used his
- 32:58Speaker 1: time in the bank's basement to learn what he could
- 33:01Speaker 1: about the safety deposit boxes themselves, and then he went
- 33:05Speaker 1: online or wherever it was he found the source. But
- 33:09Speaker 1: he bought the same make and same model of boxes
- 33:12Speaker 1: from the fucking manufacturer to bring home and study how
- 33:17Speaker 1: he can crack them.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Hey, that's like a kind of genius.
- 33:22Speaker 1: This is like a real life Oceans eleven.
- 33:24Speaker 2: It actually really seems like there's a lot of things
- 33:27Speaker 2: we're just bouncing off comparisons in this Wow. But it
- 33:29Speaker 2: does seem like that, it really does.
- 33:33Speaker 1: So he then gave those boxes to the engineer Sebastian,
- 33:37Speaker 1: and Sebastian designed a jackhammer like tool after finding out
- 33:41Speaker 1: the best way to access them to break into these boxes,
- 33:44Speaker 1: and the jackhammer kind of could be easily dismantled, dismembered,
- 33:48Speaker 1: or whatever you want to say disassembled. Maybe dismembered isn't
- 33:50Speaker 1: the best way to say it disassembled for easy transportation
- 33:56Speaker 1: through the tunnels to bring it to the bank. Okay,
- 34:02Speaker 1: So with the tunnel built, the tool ready, and their
- 34:05Speaker 1: escape plan set, the crew met up to pull off
- 34:08Speaker 1: the bank heist of the century.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, Okay, I'm freaking pumped to see how
- 34:13Speaker 2: these fucking pieces are coming together here.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Okay, Well, Sebastian. Wow, do you hear my voice crack there?
- 34:19Speaker 2: Yeah, quite a bit. We should put all those together.
- 34:23Speaker 1: And people be like holy. Sebastian went, what's wrong with
- 34:26Speaker 1: ben puberty at thirty five?
- 34:30Speaker 2: Thirty four?
- 34:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm thirty five and in a couple months close enough. Anyways,
- 34:35Speaker 1: we digress. Sebastian went first, leaving early in the morning
- 34:40Speaker 1: to head out to the mouth of the storm drink,
- 34:42Speaker 1: where he would walk to the end of the tunnel
- 34:45Speaker 1: and wait.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:47Speaker 1: The rest of the crew stole two cars and drove
- 34:50Speaker 1: them to the bank. There, Fernando set up one of
- 34:53Speaker 1: them to look like the getaway vehicle, and the others
- 34:56Speaker 1: drove a van into the garage under the bank and
- 34:59Speaker 1: blocked the entrance. Fernando, dressed in a disguise, only just
- 35:05Speaker 1: about made it into the bank before the rest of
- 35:07Speaker 1: the crew pulled out toy guns and told everyone inside
- 35:11Speaker 1: that a robbery was happening.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, hey, toy guns. I like that.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Yeah. None of the employees seemed to notice that the
- 35:19Speaker 1: guns were even fake, as everyone hit the floor and
- 35:22Speaker 1: did whatever Fernando's crew asked them to.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Do. Oh yeah, like toy or not? Still be freaking
- 35:27Speaker 2: scared shitless.
- 35:28Speaker 1: Oh for sure. So Fernando and Louis were in charge
- 35:33Speaker 1: of the police and biding time for the robbery to
- 35:35Speaker 1: occur in the basement. Beto and an additional crew member
- 35:39Speaker 1: that the crew had hired closer to the day of
- 35:41Speaker 1: were in charge of keeping the hostages under control, while
- 35:45Speaker 1: Doc headed downstairs, where he chipped away at the last
- 35:49Speaker 1: few remaining centimeters of cement in the wall between the
- 35:53Speaker 1: bank and the tunnel to get Sebastian inside.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Wow. Okay.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Once the tunnel was complete, the two of them got
- 36:01Speaker 1: to work and assembled the makeshift jackhammer and emptied the
- 36:05Speaker 1: deposit boxes one after the other.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Huh okay, this is this is like quite the operation here.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it is. And while this is occurring, that's
- 36:16Speaker 1: when Louie stepped up into his role that would go
- 36:18Speaker 1: down in infamy as Walter.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Oh okay, Walter, it's Walter. Okay. I thought it was
- 36:24Speaker 2: gonna be Fernando. That was Walter.
- 36:26Speaker 1: No, it was Louis.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Okay.
- 36:28Speaker 1: So Walter or Louis and the officers negotiated back and forth,
- 36:32Speaker 1: and eventually we get to the part where you know,
- 36:34Speaker 1: they asked the officers to send in the pizzas because
- 36:37Speaker 1: the hostages were hungry.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Yeah, did they get to pick what kind of fucking
- 36:42Speaker 2: toppings they wanted too? This is wild.
- 36:44Speaker 1: I maybe I don't know.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Pineapple is good on pizza.
- 36:47Speaker 1: I'm just saying we are Canadian, so yeah, fun fact,
- 36:50Speaker 1: Whyan is a Canadian pizza, right?
- 36:53Speaker 2: You know what? I didn't even know that.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a Canadian invention.
- 36:55Speaker 2: I just know a lot of people think that it's
- 36:57Speaker 2: you're either ya to pineapple or Nate to pineapple on pizza.
- 37:00Speaker 1: I'm an or. It's not my favorite, but it's not bad.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Oh, I'm obsessed.
- 37:06Speaker 1: So good. It's good, but it's like it's better, it's
- 37:10Speaker 1: pretty good. The one topic that goes so good on
- 37:12Speaker 1: pizza though, feta cheese. Oh my god. If you get
- 37:15Speaker 1: a okay, fun tip for anybody, a cheese pizza with
- 37:19Speaker 1: extra cheese and feta cheese, Oh my.
- 37:22Speaker 2: God, we'll bring you to the yeah about an hour
- 37:25Speaker 2: or two later.
- 37:26Speaker 1: But it's worth it. It's so fucking worth it, so much.
- 37:30Speaker 2: It's so much cheese, but it's worth it.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I don't do it very often, but when I do. Anyways,
- 37:38Speaker 1: where were we here? Yes, so they called for the
- 37:40Speaker 1: pizzas because the hostages were hungry, so the police listened.
- 37:44Speaker 1: But this request was more than just what it looked
- 37:47Speaker 1: like on the surface. It wasn't just a call for
- 37:49Speaker 1: pizzas because they're being nice to the hostages. This was
- 37:53Speaker 1: a signal to the rest of the crew.
- 37:56Speaker 2: Oh okay.
- 37:58Speaker 1: So once Walter Louis had asked for the pizzas, everyone
- 38:02Speaker 1: knew that it was now time to make their escape.
- 38:05Speaker 1: It was time to get out.
- 38:07Speaker 2: That like, the safety deposit boxes were empty, and they're
- 38:10Speaker 2: ready to roll.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Well, I believe they gave themselves two hours in there
- 38:14Speaker 1: to do their job. They were not staying any longer
- 38:17Speaker 1: if they had a time limit. Once that time was hit,
- 38:19Speaker 1: he's going to ask for the pizzas and now let's
- 38:21Speaker 1: get out, no matter how far we've gotten.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Oh okay, Like that's probably good.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, otherwise your greed will take over, which will
- 38:27Speaker 1: eventually get them caught. Absolutely, so they asked for the pizzas,
- 38:33Speaker 1: and everyone knew it was time. So they made their
- 38:34Speaker 1: way to the basement, met up and they began hacking
- 38:37Speaker 1: out the valuables that Sebastian and Doc had broken out
- 38:40Speaker 1: of the boxes, and they began feeding them through the tunnels.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Sebastian had brought two inflatable zodiac style boats with him,
- 38:47Speaker 1: and the crew filled them both before climbing through the
- 38:51Speaker 1: tunnels themselves.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Wow.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Now, I did also see a report that they knew
- 38:56Speaker 1: that these zodiac boats would be way down a lot
- 38:58Speaker 1: with the possessions inside. And there's not a lot of
- 39:01Speaker 1: water in these tunnels, right, so they're probably gonna end
- 39:04Speaker 1: up bottoming out with the weight. So I believe they
- 39:06Speaker 1: ended up doing some sort of damming or something. They
- 39:09Speaker 1: put some boards up and damned it to actually raise
- 39:11Speaker 1: the water level.
- 39:12Speaker 2: Are you serious? Yeah, they literally thought of everything they did. Wow,
- 39:21Speaker 2: my mind is blown.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Yeah, so began moving this stuff out on these inflatable
- 39:25Speaker 1: zodiac boats. Wow. Fernando and Docks stayed behind, And the
- 39:30Speaker 1: reason they stayed behind They didn't stay behind very long,
- 39:32Speaker 1: but they stayed behind long enough to begin spraying the
- 39:35Speaker 1: room with bleach to eliminate their DNA. And they also
- 39:40Speaker 1: began tossing hair clippings that they had gotten from local
- 39:44Speaker 1: barber shops all over the place to cover any hair
- 39:47Speaker 1: they may have left behind. What yeah, really yep, So
- 39:53Speaker 1: that basically rules any piece of hair they ever find useless.
- 39:57Speaker 2: That's some smart shit right there.
- 39:59Speaker 1: And then they followed suit they went through the tunnels.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Huh yep.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Wow, I just can't believe how like the munchlitters using
- 40:07Speaker 2: their noggins here.
- 40:08Speaker 1: But before they fully left the room, as they're leaving
- 40:11Speaker 1: in the tunnel there, they maneuvered a shelving unit to
- 40:14Speaker 1: cover the tunnel hole behind them.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Huh okay, yeah wow.
- 40:19Speaker 1: And then they disappeared.
- 40:21Speaker 2: And then they got like tons more hours because the
- 40:25Speaker 2: police didn't do it, didn't come in or anything exactly.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Huh okay yep.
- 40:30Speaker 1: So they sailed down these freaking drainage tunnels to a
- 40:35Speaker 1: man hole several miles away from the bank. They used
- 40:38Speaker 1: a lift that Sebastian had built to help them haul
- 40:40Speaker 1: the bags and valuables out of the rafts. Then they
- 40:43Speaker 1: let the rafts just drift away and they climbed into
- 40:46Speaker 1: the real getaway van they had parked and off to safety. Wow.
- 40:53Speaker 1: So it took the police, you know, a couple hours
- 40:56Speaker 1: to go into the bank and find that the hostages
- 40:58Speaker 1: were not inside. In fact, by the time they did
- 41:01Speaker 1: go inside the bank, every one of the robbers were
- 41:04Speaker 1: already safe and sound, watching the news coverage unfold on TV.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Okay, the hostages were inside, but the robbers weren't.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Or sorry, yes, yeah, yeah, they only found the hostages inside. Yeah,
- 41:15Speaker 1: but the robbers were.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Gone, literally just at home watching this playout, Yes, with
- 41:20Speaker 2: probably with pizza for God's sakes, and beer.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Yes, I actually I did see reports that they were
- 41:25Speaker 1: eating pizza. I don't know if that was true or not.
- 41:27Speaker 2: But well, I mean I want pizza now, so I
- 41:29Speaker 2: don't blame them.
- 41:32Speaker 1: So yeah, they're just watched, Like by the time they're home,
- 41:34Speaker 1: they're watching the police starting to enter the bank.
- 41:37Speaker 2: And probably counting how much money they made.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Well, they don't have cash, well, like.
- 41:43Speaker 2: The valuables like the gold, the jewels, the whatever.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Exactly and uh fun fact, by the way, it was
- 41:49Speaker 1: estimated to be approximately worth twenty million US dollars. Oh valuably.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Okay, I was very curious. That is a lot of money.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's two thousand and six by the way,
- 42:00Speaker 1: I mean, like, how are.
- 42:01Speaker 2: They going to get rid of all this stuff?
- 42:03Speaker 1: Though?
- 42:03Speaker 2: That's well, eventually they start selling it off, right, Yeah,
- 42:06Speaker 2: I mean I guess you're not getting that chunk of
- 42:08Speaker 2: cheese just off the.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Map, and there's no way to track these things. It's
- 42:12Speaker 1: not like there's serial numbers or anything on you know,
- 42:14Speaker 1: a gold watch or some diamonds or you know, silver coins,
- 42:18Speaker 1: who fucking knows what. Yeah. So anyways, in the following days,
- 42:23Speaker 1: Sebastian took all the credit cards they had found in
- 42:26Speaker 1: the boxes. This just shows more genius. I love this part. Well,
- 42:31Speaker 1: they weren't going to use those a you know, the
- 42:34Speaker 1: cash value behind it. Who knew the economy right in
- 42:37Speaker 1: their page thro the value of it.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Also, it's going to track right to them real fucking quick.
- 42:42Speaker 1: So he decided he was going to dump them. He
- 42:45Speaker 1: went driving around and left them around town, sending police
- 42:49Speaker 1: on a wild goose chase because anyone would be arrested
- 42:54Speaker 1: who was found using one of these stolen cards. You know,
- 42:56Speaker 1: they were just like, oh, this person picked up a
- 42:58Speaker 1: stolen fucking credit card, right, Oh, Lottie dah. You know,
- 43:01Speaker 1: I'm in a poor neighborhood, you know, recession. I need
- 43:04Speaker 1: some money. Here's a free credit card. I'm going to
- 43:05Speaker 1: buy some stuff.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Wow.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Now the police are like, oh, we know that card stolen.
- 43:10Speaker 1: We're trapping you down. You must be a part of
- 43:12Speaker 1: the robbery, sending on wild fucking goose chases because they
- 43:16Speaker 1: spread all these cards across the city. Huh so, now
- 43:20Speaker 1: good luck tracking real thing.
- 43:22Speaker 2: That's slightly genius right there.
- 43:24Speaker 1: It was quite literally the perfect crime.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Yeah, no kidding, or at least almost, because I'm like,
- 43:32Speaker 2: what did they do wrong here? Like how did they
- 43:35Speaker 2: I'm assuming they got caught here?
- 43:36Speaker 1: So oh yeah, we wouldn't know all these details, right yeah.
- 43:41Speaker 1: So yeah, that's someone who's talked or got caught or
- 43:45Speaker 1: however you want to put it. Would be the old
- 43:47Speaker 1: veteran Beto. The story goes that Beto often cheated on
- 43:51Speaker 1: his wife, but only five weeks after the heist, she
- 43:57Speaker 1: had enough. She had enough his cheating ass. He had
- 44:00Speaker 1: cheated on her again and she knew that he had
- 44:03Speaker 1: been part of the now infamous Bonnco Rio heist. Wow,
- 44:07Speaker 1: So she turned him in. She called the police, she
- 44:12Speaker 1: gave them information that her husband was involved in this
- 44:16Speaker 1: and the details she knew, and he was arrested.
- 44:20Speaker 2: I honestly can't even blame her. I can't blame her
- 44:24Speaker 2: at all. I mean, yes and no, I mean she
- 44:28Speaker 2: might have been reaping some benefits still from.
- 44:30Speaker 1: That, That's what I mean. The no part right. Yeah,
- 44:33Speaker 1: So it's it's not a like, I know she's if
- 44:37Speaker 1: you have a conscience, clearly you want to be telling like, hey,
- 44:39Speaker 1: someone robbed a fucking bank and stole twenty million dollars. Yeah,
- 44:43Speaker 1: clearly she's kind of involved in it because she is
- 44:46Speaker 1: reaping those benefits. So now it's like a hey, I'm
- 44:49Speaker 1: going to turn you in, But she's also not getting
- 44:51Speaker 1: the benefits now, so it's like, we already know you're
- 44:53Speaker 1: kind of bad because you didn't talk hout to begin with.
- 44:55Speaker 1: Maybe you should just cut your losses and be like, hey,
- 44:58Speaker 1: give me five million or whatever.
- 45:00Speaker 2: I don't know, and I'll walk on and then you
- 45:01Speaker 2: can go and be with whoever the hell you want.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Yeah, so there's I see what you're saying. Yeah, she
- 45:08Speaker 1: should have turn him in, but also said, yeah, shouldn't
- 45:09Speaker 1: have a tournament. It's it's a complicated. I can go
- 45:12Speaker 1: off for hours in that. Probably.
- 45:14Speaker 2: So did she know the names of the others that
- 45:16Speaker 2: were involved too then, or just that it was that
- 45:18Speaker 2: he was involved.
- 45:19Speaker 1: I'll touch on that here one second. Okay, Okay, So Beto,
- 45:24Speaker 1: when he was arrested, he did not give up the
- 45:26Speaker 1: other members of the crew. Okay, but now with him
- 45:29Speaker 1: behind bars, it didn't take long for investigators to begin
- 45:32Speaker 1: tracking the trail and well, if he's involved, then he's
- 45:36Speaker 1: involved then so on and like you know, tracking this
- 45:38Speaker 1: and actually finding out who these other associates would be.
- 45:41Speaker 1: So Fernando, Sebastian and Louis were arrested. Beto's wife was
- 45:46Speaker 1: then able to confirm their identities because she did see
- 45:50Speaker 1: them prepping the getaway van in their garage only a
- 45:53Speaker 1: few days before the robbery.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Oh wow, so she's still just like willingly helping here.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Yeah. She however, did not see Doc in the garage,
- 46:03Speaker 1: so he managed to get away, but the same couldn't
- 46:06Speaker 1: be said for the rest of the crew. Walter, the negotiator,
- 46:10Speaker 1: otherwise known as Louis, managed to take advantage of a loophole. See,
- 46:14Speaker 1: he was from Uruguay and an Argentinian law allowed for
- 46:18Speaker 1: non nationals to serve only half of their sentence under
- 46:22Speaker 1: the conditions that they left Argentina when they were released
- 46:25Speaker 1: from prison, and so Louis agreed to do so Yeah,
- 46:31Speaker 1: that's smart, yeap. He later moved to San Juan del Mao,
- 46:34Speaker 1: where he married, started a family, and apparently opened a
- 46:37Speaker 1: jewelry shop.
- 46:39Speaker 2: So fun fact that you only hope Karme is on
- 46:42Speaker 2: a bit and it doesn't get robbed.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly right. Fernando, the mastermind behind it all, served
- 46:48Speaker 1: his sentence and then put his creative creativity, I should say,
- 46:53Speaker 1: to good use. Yet again, he's written books, in movie
- 46:56Speaker 1: scripts and even started in a few acting roles, most
- 46:59Speaker 1: of them having to do with the infamous Bunco Rio
- 47:01Speaker 1: heist and his part in it, which I don't know
- 47:03Speaker 1: if he was involved in this movie. But there is
- 47:06Speaker 1: a movie. It was twenty twenty. It came out. There's
- 47:11Speaker 1: a movie based on this.
- 47:13Speaker 2: Really, okay, I want to watch that. It's probably a
- 47:14Speaker 2: good movie.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Probably is. What's it called. I'm going to google it
- 47:17Speaker 1: here real quick? Okay, got it? It is called the
- 47:20Speaker 1: Heist of the Century. Should have known that one, Yeah,
- 47:24Speaker 1: who could have guessed it? And then there's Sebastian, the
- 47:28Speaker 1: genius engineer who rigged a lot of this stuff. Right.
- 47:32Speaker 1: Sebastian only had to serve twenty five months in prison.
- 47:36Speaker 1: He was only ever convicted for building the tunnel, and
- 47:41Speaker 1: stayed quiet about the exact role he played in the
- 47:43Speaker 1: heist ununtil twenty nineteen oh Yep. It was one of
- 47:49Speaker 1: those widely known but never confirmed secrets that the heist
- 47:54Speaker 1: would have happened wouldn't have happened without Sebastian, but the
- 47:57Speaker 1: public didn't officially know until he came out and announced
- 48:01Speaker 1: it in May of twenty nineteen on his own accord.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Okay, why the heck did he do that because by then.
- 48:07Speaker 1: The Statue of Limitations conveniently.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Over any wanted credit for this shit probably, of course,
- 48:14Speaker 2: are you kidding me? Yeah, so it was actually shocking.
- 48:17Speaker 2: I think I would have taken that to the grave.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Well he didn't, he openly confessed after the Statute of
- 48:23Speaker 1: Limitations was in fact conveniently Yeah, so he did not
- 48:28Speaker 1: have the threat of another conviction hanging over him, and
- 48:30Speaker 1: he he said, yeah, this is my part.
- 48:32Speaker 2: I mean, that is kind of it is a little humorous,
- 48:34Speaker 2: do I suppose?
- 48:36Speaker 1: Yeah? So finally, yeah, so, finally he admitted to the
- 48:40Speaker 1: Argentinian people that and the world basically exactly how he
- 48:43Speaker 1: came up with the ingenious contraptions to help make the
- 48:46Speaker 1: robbery possible and make sure that he and the rest
- 48:49Speaker 1: of the crew would go down in infamy with this
- 48:52Speaker 1: heist of the century, and that specifically right there is
- 48:56Speaker 1: probably why we know so much detail in itself, because
- 48:59Speaker 1: he came out and told all this sort of stuff
- 49:01Speaker 1: in twenty nineteen.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and really that's not that long ago at all. Like,
- 49:04Speaker 2: I'm surprised I haven't heard any of this.
- 49:06Speaker 1: It's a wild story.
- 49:08Speaker 2: Have you heard of this?
- 49:09Speaker 1: Not at all? Thanks to our patrons, though I do now.
- 49:12Speaker 2: How have we not?
- 49:13Speaker 1: I'm not sure.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Because that's really not that long ago. No.
- 49:18Speaker 1: And I had fun researching this one because I.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Could imagine it was wild. I'm kind of jealous. I
- 49:23Speaker 2: kind of wish I was researching this one.
- 49:25Speaker 1: We should look into some more heist ones.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean the Maple Surpie is still one
- 49:29Speaker 2: of my favorite episodes ever that it was a fun one.
- 49:32Speaker 2: It was so fun. I don't know what episode number
- 49:34Speaker 2: that was, but it was fricking fun.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Well, and how Canadian can you get? Hey, millions of dollars? A?
- 49:39Speaker 2: How Canadian can you get A?
- 49:40Speaker 1: What did I say A?
- 49:41Speaker 2: I don't know if you said it hey or a?
- 49:43Speaker 2: But the same thing.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Fuck my Canadian showing bud.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Uh?
- 49:48Speaker 1: But yeah, that's the uh the buncoreal heist.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Hey. Well, I do have a question. I don't know
- 49:54Speaker 2: if you have the answer to this, but like, so
- 49:56Speaker 2: I'm assuming just all the valuables that got stolen kind
- 49:58Speaker 2: of were just returned.
- 49:59Speaker 1: To p I'm assuming. So I'm not certain how they
- 50:04Speaker 1: would have sorted it out, but I'm assuming so there
- 50:07Speaker 1: must have been a record of what was in whose
- 50:09Speaker 1: safety deposit box and value of them and stuff.
- 50:12Speaker 2: So I know, because like you think about, Okay, people
- 50:15Speaker 2: lost money like that had been so stressful, but it's like, shit,
- 50:18Speaker 2: this was good, Like I feel good, almost bad thinking
- 50:22Speaker 2: this is good, but you almost wanted them to get
- 50:25Speaker 2: away with it, kind of like I was rooting for them.
- 50:28Speaker 2: But I mean, they're criminals, so what's wrong with me?
- 50:30Speaker 1: Well, people do kind of akin this story to like
- 50:34Speaker 1: Robin Hood steal from the rich sort of thing, right, yeah,
- 50:37Speaker 1: because A they are stealing from the banks who fucked
- 50:40Speaker 1: them over in the first place, and B they are
- 50:43Speaker 1: kind of stealing from I mean, other civilians, but they
- 50:45Speaker 1: are very well off civilians are stealing from.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Well, and honestly, now i'm thinking about it, the bank,
- 50:50Speaker 2: I'm sure would probably have some sort of insurance that
- 50:52Speaker 2: those civilians would still not really be losing much. I'm thinking, well,
- 50:56Speaker 2: that's true.
- 50:57Speaker 1: That's true. So wow.
- 50:59Speaker 2: I never thought I feel like there would be it
- 51:01Speaker 2: would not be the civilian's fault whatsoever, and that the
- 51:04Speaker 2: bank would be held liable and they would probably have
- 51:07Speaker 2: had insurance of sorts.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Holy shit, you just opened up a whole new can.
- 51:10Speaker 1: I never even thought of that.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:12Speaker 1: Yeah, so they were quite literally just stealing from the bank.
- 51:17Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, the people were losing their items, but
- 51:18Speaker 1: they're getting paid out in lieu of Wow.
- 51:21Speaker 2: I mean that money has to come from somewhere though,
