- 0:26Speaker 1: news is the Saints wrapped up mandatory mini camp. A
- 0:32Speaker 1: day ago, was that Cam Jordan was there. Cam and
- 0:36Speaker 1: the Saints agreed to a contract, a one year deal.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Cam was out there on the practice field. We all
- 0:41Speaker 1: sort of anticipated what that contract would be like, a
- 0:44Speaker 1: low dollar amount with an incentive laden deal, much like
- 0:48Speaker 1: the deal he signed a year ago with the New
- 0:50Speaker 1: Orleans Saints. Well, now we know the terms of that
- 0:52Speaker 1: deal and it's exactly what we thought it was going
- 0:55Speaker 1: to be. Had tip rap sheet Ian rapped four on
- 0:58Speaker 1: X had this earlier today. So Cam has a one
- 1:01Speaker 1: year deal with a max value of eleven million dollars.
- 1:07Speaker 1: So excuse me, the base is seven and a half
- 1:11Speaker 1: million dollars, he'll get six one five in a signing bonus,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and then uh one three five in the base that'll
- 1:19Speaker 1: be his the base value of his contract, and then
- 1:22Speaker 1: he has up to three and a half million dollars
- 1:26Speaker 1: in incentives. A year ago Cam's deal was about a
- 1:29Speaker 1: million dollars less than that one but six and a half.
- 1:34Speaker 1: So they're giving about a million more guaranteed base with
- 1:36Speaker 1: the opportunity to get to eleven and a half with
- 1:38Speaker 1: sack incentives. Great deal if you're the New Orleans Saints
- 1:42Speaker 1: and you look at Cam Jordan entering year thirty is
- 1:46Speaker 1: age thirty seven. Season is sixteenth season in the NFL,
- 1:50Speaker 1: a guy who, as we've really documented here, has been
- 1:53Speaker 1: declining ever since twenty twenty two, had a very nice
- 1:57Speaker 1: season a year ago, but still playing roughly half the
- 2:00Speaker 1: defensive snaps of the season. As a rotational player. You
- 2:03Speaker 1: don't pay him like a starter. You pay him like
- 2:05Speaker 1: a rotational backup, and you give him incentives that if
- 2:08Speaker 1: he becomes really productive like he did a year ago,
- 2:10Speaker 1: his contract can be more valuable. So I'm not moving
- 2:14Speaker 1: off this spot at all. It's exactly what we thought
- 2:16Speaker 1: all along. Had tip to the New Orleans Saints for
- 2:20Speaker 1: being fiscally responsible for sticking to their number as they
- 2:23Speaker 1: often do with free agents. And then hat tip to
- 2:26Speaker 1: Cam for having the humility to accept this contract and
- 2:29Speaker 1: accept where he is in his career, and then the
- 2:31Speaker 1: opportunity to come back and finish his career in New Orleans, which,
- 2:34Speaker 1: although he didn't say it, this is very likely the
- 2:37Speaker 1: last year of his NFL career and he'll play this
- 2:39Speaker 1: final season his sixteenth in New Orleans and that's awesome. Look,
- 2:43Speaker 1: Cam in his career has made one hundred and forty
- 2:46Speaker 1: six million dollars okay, to be exact, one hundred and
- 2:51Speaker 1: forty six million, two four hundred and twenty three eight
- 2:54Speaker 1: hundred and forty dollars in career earnings. Now, look, there's
- 2:57Speaker 1: taxes and agents fees and we all understand that, but
- 2:59Speaker 1: the bottom line is, dude has made nine figures playing football.
- 3:05Speaker 1: It's not that Cam is hurting for the money. It's
- 3:08Speaker 1: about respect and knowing your value and whatever it is
- 3:11Speaker 1: that you do. And that's true for quite literally everyone.
- 3:14Speaker 1: It doesn't matter what you do for a living. If
- 3:16Speaker 1: you're excellent, would you do and you feel like you
- 3:18Speaker 1: provide value for the company? That you work for you
- 3:20Speaker 1: want to be compensated accordingly. That's just reality. Cam and
- 3:25Speaker 1: the Saints went through that. They had to balance what
- 3:27Speaker 1: they feel he was worth. He had to balance what
- 3:29Speaker 1: he feels he's worth, and they came to this agreement. There. Look,
- 3:32Speaker 1: if the market spoke differently and Cam had an opportunity
- 3:36Speaker 1: like Tomrio Davis did with a multi year deal with
- 3:39Speaker 1: guarantees with the Jets, the market spoke and the Saints
- 3:42Speaker 1: weren't willing to pay to Mario Davis with the Jets
- 3:45Speaker 1: were Now I hate that because I think Tomorrio Davis
- 3:47Speaker 1: was worth every penny of that deal had the Saints
- 3:50Speaker 1: given it to him. But they decided to go for
- 3:52Speaker 1: a guy that's nearly a decade younger, less productive, but
- 3:54Speaker 1: a decade younger, and kay Nellis. It's what they decided
- 3:57Speaker 1: to do. And here they've made it work with Cam Jordan,
- 4:00Speaker 1: which is great. So Saints wrap up mandatory mini camp.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Now they get to sort of just go for about
- 4:07Speaker 1: a month. The team gets to go do their own
- 4:09Speaker 1: thing for a month, take a vacation, get your body
- 4:12Speaker 1: right for the start of training camp at the end
- 4:14Speaker 1: of July. Wheneveryone sort of reconvenes, and when the next
- 4:18Speaker 1: time we see the Saints all together on the practice field,
- 4:21Speaker 1: it's going to be at the start of training camp,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and it's going to be a dramatically different feeling than
- 4:25Speaker 1: a year ago, because, of course, a year ago, at
- 4:26Speaker 1: the start of training camp, you had Tyler Shuck and
- 4:29Speaker 1: Spencer Rattler, I guess, and to a degree, our guy
- 4:34Speaker 1: Jkaner with his glamour shots out there batting. But I
- 4:37Speaker 1: think we all knew the reality there. But it was
- 4:38Speaker 1: Shuck and it was Rattler battling for the starting job,
- 4:41Speaker 1: and that was really the crux of camp a year ago.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Now it is just it's it's given. It's Tyler Shuck's team,
- 4:50Speaker 1: He's the starter, and so now it's about Tyler Shuck
- 4:53Speaker 1: using this next month to prepare himself as best he
- 4:55Speaker 1: can for his first full season as the starting quarterback
- 4:58Speaker 1: for the Saints. And when Chuck met with the Porters
- 5:00Speaker 1: as they broke from any camp, he was asked by
- 5:02Speaker 1: the Way about camp, because there was a story going
- 5:04Speaker 1: around there that that camp told that Tyler Schuck was
- 5:07Speaker 1: just pestering him all off season about returning to the Saints.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Here's what Schuck said about it.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we were texting all throughout the offseason. I don't
- 5:14Speaker 2: know who was pastor and who he was sending sending
- 5:16Speaker 2: me some stuff and all his derby days and all
- 5:19Speaker 2: the things that he was doing, and I could tell
- 5:21Speaker 2: just he wants to be here. He understands this is
- 5:23Speaker 2: his play, this is his home, and he's been such
- 5:25Speaker 2: a great leader and influence for me being from the
- 5:27Speaker 2: same hometown, who he is as a person, his impact
- 5:30Speaker 2: on the community, and I can't be more happy to
- 5:32Speaker 2: have him back because he just brings that element for
- 5:34Speaker 2: this team that you can't explain.
- 5:37Speaker 1: You know, it's Cam being back is awesome, but we
- 5:42Speaker 1: got to see Cam play a full season a year ago.
- 5:44Speaker 1: The other player that's back that's notable is your starting
- 5:48Speaker 1: center and Eric McCoy making out that battery And probably
- 5:51Speaker 1: something we hands in the air haven't talked enough about
- 5:55Speaker 1: is how important that is. Because remember Tyler Shuck started
- 5:58Speaker 1: the final line games of the season. We didn't ge
- 6:00Speaker 1: to play with Eric McCoy. We had Luke Fortner in
- 6:02Speaker 1: there at center a year ago, so this is going
- 6:06Speaker 1: to be a new battery mate there as well for Shuck.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Now Shuck in preseason all no doubt in camp got
- 6:12Speaker 1: to work with McCoy, but as far as being his
- 6:15Speaker 1: battery mate in game in season, this is going to
- 6:18Speaker 1: be new. And Shuck talked about having McCoy back.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I mean, I think he just adds an extra veteran
- 6:23Speaker 2: element where he's seen a lot of football. He's been
- 6:25Speaker 2: great for me because him and I, even though we
- 6:27Speaker 2: didn't get to play together, we were around each other
- 6:28Speaker 2: every single day going to O line dinners, and I
- 6:30Speaker 2: mean we had our son born within twenty four hours
- 6:33Speaker 2: of each other, so we had the hospital together. And
- 6:35Speaker 2: you know, I love him. So he's been great for
- 6:36Speaker 2: me just be able to learn and talk with him.
- 6:38Speaker 2: For the whole line group, I think it's kind of
- 6:39Speaker 2: just that solidified position.
- 6:43Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Man.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I didn't realize the story about their sons being born
- 6:46Speaker 1: the same time and being at the hospital together, which
- 6:48Speaker 1: is his really cool life experiences will certainly create a bond.
- 6:51Speaker 1: And I think the other thing that's really important about
- 6:54Speaker 1: Schuck is I mentioned this next month month that he's
- 6:58Speaker 1: four to six weeks right, will have now to break
- 7:02Speaker 1: right go now, Tyler Schuck lives in New Orleans, But
- 7:05Speaker 1: you want to go take a vacation with your family.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Go do it, but make sure you come back for
- 7:09Speaker 1: camp body right ready to go. So for Shuck, he
- 7:12Speaker 1: was asked, Okay, for you, what are these next six weeks.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Like, yeah, being organ and then it'll be in San Diego.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Drew's kind of helping us set up, you know, our
- 7:20Speaker 2: qb Rogers. You're throwing a treat, so we're getting all
- 7:22Speaker 2: the guys to come down there and being able to
- 7:24Speaker 2: just work and bond together. And then for me, it's
- 7:27Speaker 2: just kind of continue to study the playbook and then
- 7:30Speaker 2: to just put my feet in my eyes in the
- 7:31Speaker 2: right position. You know, that's my whole focus. And right now,
- 7:34Speaker 2: you know this OTA phase, you know you're not necessarily
- 7:36Speaker 2: getting full speed, padded reps, but you know you're installing
- 7:39Speaker 2: all these new plays making sure we're getting everything right.
- 7:41Speaker 2: And I think we've done a really good job of
- 7:42Speaker 2: that as a team, and we've gotten closer. That's kind
- 7:44Speaker 2: of the main thing we just highlighted in the team
- 7:46Speaker 2: meeting room all the fun things that we've done this
- 7:48Speaker 2: whole offseason. And this is probably the tightest bunch that
- 7:51Speaker 2: you know, all of us have been around.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Cam Jordan is back, Eric McCoy is back, Tyler Shuck
- 7:57Speaker 1: is the unquestioned starter. You've added a a legit number
- 8:01Speaker 1: one wide out weapon in Jordan Tyson. There are two
- 8:04Speaker 1: questions that remain to be answered in this offseason for
- 8:06Speaker 1: the New Orleans Saints. Number One, what is going to
- 8:09Speaker 1: happen with Alvin Kamara? The consensus is he is not
- 8:12Speaker 1: playing this season under his current contract, so does he
- 8:16Speaker 1: take a pay cut? Do the New Orleans Saints cut him?
- 8:19Speaker 1: Does he retire? I don't know the answer to that,
- 8:23Speaker 1: but that's something you would assume is going to be
- 8:24Speaker 1: rectified in the next six weeks. And then number two,
- 8:28Speaker 1: do the New Orleans Saints get an extension done with
- 8:30Speaker 1: Chris Olave? He could certainly play this season on the
- 8:33Speaker 1: final year of his rookie deal, having signed the Saints
- 8:36Speaker 1: having picked up his fifth year option. He could play
- 8:38Speaker 1: this year in his fifth year option, become an unrestricted
- 8:40Speaker 1: free agent after the season, or do the Saints get
- 8:42Speaker 1: ahead of it and get this done before the season starts.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Two big questions about premier players for the New Orleans
- 8:49Speaker 1: Saints offensively that still need to be answered, very likely
- 8:51Speaker 1: before the Saints hit the field for training. Camp coming
- 8:54Speaker 1: up in late July.
