- 0:00Speaker 1: Skulls Kparmal sections three through seventeen of the prose Edda
- 0:06Speaker 1: by Snorri Storlsen, translated by Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur eighteen eighty
- 0:12Speaker 1: eight nineteen seventy one. This LibriVox recording is in the
- 0:16Speaker 1: public domain recording by expatriate in Bangor, Maine, The Poesy
- 0:22Speaker 1: of Skulds Section three. Now you shall hear how the
- 0:27Speaker 1: Skulds have turned the art of poesy in these metaphorical
- 0:31Speaker 1: phrases which have been recorded before, for example, by calling
- 0:35Speaker 1: it Kvasir's gore and ship of the Dwarfs, Dwarf's mead,
- 0:39Speaker 1: meat of the Esir, Giant's father, ransom, liquor of Odrerir,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and of Bodin and of son, and fullness of these
- 0:48Speaker 1: liquor of Neetberg booty, and find in gift of Odin,
- 0:53Speaker 1: even as has been sung in these verses which in
- 0:55Speaker 1: ar tinkling scale wrought, I pray the high souled warder
- 1:00Speaker 1: of Earth to hear the ocean of the cliff of dwarfs.
- 1:03Speaker 1: My verses here earl the gore of Kavassir, and as
- 1:08Speaker 1: I near tinkling scales sang further, the dwarfs Crag's song
- 1:12Speaker 1: wave rushes o'er all the dauntless shield host of him
- 1:16Speaker 1: who speeds the fury of the shield Wall's piercing sword bane.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Even as oer meer Stein Torsen sang the body of
- 1:25Speaker 1: the Dame and my dead be borne into one hall
- 1:28Speaker 1: the drink of dvalin Franklin's here, and as refer sang,
- 1:34Speaker 1: I reveal the thoughts drink of the rock folk to Torstein.
- 1:38Speaker 1: The billow of the dwarf Crag plashes, I bid men hearken.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Even as Eegiel sang the Prince requires my lore and
- 1:47Speaker 1: bound his praise to pour Odin's mead, I bore to
- 1:51Speaker 1: English shore. And as gloomer Gyrisen sang, let the princely
- 1:57Speaker 1: giver hearken. I hold the god King's liquor. Let silence
- 2:01Speaker 1: then be granted while we sing the loss of Thanes.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And as a vinder sang a hearing, I pray for
- 2:08Speaker 1: the high One's liquor, while I uttered Gillinger's atonement, while
- 2:13Speaker 1: his kin in the cattle brewing of the gallows Lord
- 2:16Speaker 1: to the gods, I trace, Even as a nartinkling scale
- 2:21Speaker 1: sang the wave of Odin's surges of Odrerir's see a
- 2:26Speaker 1: billow gainst the tongue's song glade crashes. I our King's
- 2:30Speaker 1: works are goodly, And as he sang further, now that
- 2:35Speaker 1: which Bodin's billow bodes forth will straight be uttered. Let
- 2:38Speaker 1: the war King's host makes silence in the hall, and
- 2:42Speaker 1: hear the dwarf's ship. And as ailifur good runersen sang
- 2:48Speaker 1: grant shall ye gifts of friendship, Since grows of sun
- 2:51Speaker 1: the seedling in our tongue's fertile sedge bank true praise
- 2:56Speaker 1: of our high lord. Even as vu lushteine san egiel
- 3:01Speaker 1: hear the heart streams of Odin beat and cadence gainst
- 3:05Speaker 1: my palates scary the gods spoil to me is given.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Thus sang or mer steintrsen no verse of mine. Men
- 3:14Speaker 1: need to fear no mockery. I tertwine in Odin's spoil.
- 3:18Speaker 1: My skill is sure in forging songs of praise. Thus
- 3:23Speaker 1: sang ufer ugusen I show to host glad I liefir,
- 3:28Speaker 1: I show to host glad a lifer the heart fiord
- 3:31Speaker 1: shoal of odin my song him do I summon to
- 3:35Speaker 1: hear the gift a grimner. Poesy is called sea or
- 3:40Speaker 1: liquid of the dwarfs, because Kvasir's blood was liquid and
- 3:43Speaker 1: oudrerir before the mead was made, and then it was
- 3:47Speaker 1: put into the kettle. Wherefore it is called Odin's kettle liquor,
- 3:51Speaker 1: even as I vender sang, and as we have recorded before,
- 3:55Speaker 1: while his kin in the kettle brewing of the gallows
- 3:58Speaker 1: lord to the gods. I Moreover, poesy is called ship
- 4:03Speaker 1: or ale of the dwarfs. Ale is lead, and lead
- 4:07Speaker 1: is a word for ships. Therefore it is held that
- 4:09Speaker 1: it is for this reason that poesy is now called
- 4:12Speaker 1: ship of the dwarfs. Even as this verse tells the
- 4:16Speaker 1: wit of Gunlud's liquor in swelling wind like fullness, and
- 4:20Speaker 1: the everlasting dwarf of ship, I own to send the
- 4:23Speaker 1: same road. Section four. What figures should be employed to
- 4:30Speaker 1: paraphrase the name of Thor. Thus one should call him
- 4:34Speaker 1: son of Odin and of Yord, father of Magni and Mody,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and Thruder, husband of Sif, stepfather of Uller Wielder and
- 4:42Speaker 1: possessor of Mulnir, and of the girdle of strength, and
- 4:46Speaker 1: of Bilskirnier, defender of Asgard and of Midguard, adversary and
- 4:51Speaker 1: slayer of giants and troll women. Smiter of Frumnir of
- 4:55Speaker 1: guy Ruder and of Trivaldi, master of Tialvi and Ruskva,
- 5:00Speaker 1: foe of the Midguard's serpent, foster father of Vingnir and Hlora.
- 5:05Speaker 1: So sang Broggy the Skald. The line of Odin's offspring
- 5:10Speaker 1: lay not slack on the gunwale when the huge ocean
- 5:13Speaker 1: serpent uncoiled on the sea's bottom. Thus sang Uvir cut
- 5:18Speaker 1: nose and crop ears. The encircler of all regions and
- 5:22Speaker 1: yward sons sought each other. Thus sang Aileefer Wroth stood
- 5:27Speaker 1: Ruskva's brother and Magni's sire wrought bravely with terror. Thor's staunch.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Hertstone trembled not nor Tialfi's, and thus sang Einstein Valdisen
- 5:40Speaker 1: with glowing eyes. Thru Deer's father glared at the sea
- 5:44Speaker 1: roads circlar Ere. The fish's watery dwelling flowed in the boat,
- 5:49Speaker 1: confounding Einstein sang further swiftly. Siff's husband bound him to
- 5:56Speaker 1: haste forth with the giants for his hardy fishing, while
- 5:59Speaker 1: singing we krim near's horn stream. Again he sang the
- 6:04Speaker 1: earthfish tugged so fiercely that Uller's kinsmen clenched fists were
- 6:09Speaker 1: pulled out past the gunwale, the broad planks rent asunder.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Thus sank Broggi, the strong fiend's terrifier in his right
- 6:18Speaker 1: hand swung his hammer when he saw the loathly seafish
- 6:22Speaker 1: that all the lands confineth. Thus sang Gonley. While the
- 6:27Speaker 1: lord of high Bilskirnir, whose heart no falsehood fashion, swiftly
- 6:31Speaker 1: strove to shatter the seafish with his hammer. Thus sang
- 6:35Speaker 1: tourbiorn ladies scald bravely Thor fought for Asgard and the
- 6:40Speaker 1: followers of Odin. Thus sang Broggie. And the vast, misshapen
- 6:46Speaker 1: circler of the ship's sea path, fierce minded stared from
- 6:50Speaker 1: below in anger at the skull splitter of hrum Near. Again,
- 6:55Speaker 1: sang Broggie. Well, hast thou Hewer in sunder of the
- 6:59Speaker 1: nine heads of Trivaldi kept thy goats. Thus sang i Liefer,
- 7:05Speaker 1: the merciless destroyer of the people of the Giants, grasped
- 7:09Speaker 1: with ready fore arms at the heavy red hot iron.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Thus sang ufer ugusan faintly the stout framed, thickling a
- 7:19Speaker 1: fearful peril, called it at the great draft, wondrous heavy
- 7:23Speaker 1: drawn up by the lord of he goats. Thus ulfer
- 7:27Speaker 1: sang further the very mighty slayer of the mountain man brought,
- 7:32Speaker 1: crashing his fist on Heimir's temple. That was a hurtful, deadly.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Yet again sang Ulfer. Weimer's Ford's wide grappler against the
- 7:42Speaker 1: waves smote feetly the glittering serpent's head off with old tails.
- 7:47Speaker 1: The hull was gleaming. Here he is called Giant of
- 7:51Speaker 1: Vimer's Ford. There is a river called Veimer, which Thor
- 7:55Speaker 1: waited when he journeyed to the garth of gay Ruder.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Thus sang vet Ledi the skald, Thou didst break the
- 8:02Speaker 1: leg of Lichan, didst cause to stoop Starkadur, didst bruise Trivaldi.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Thus sang Torbiorn's ladies, scald, Thou didst smite the head
- 8:12Speaker 1: of Kailah, smash Kialandi altogether. Ere thou slewest luter and
- 8:18Speaker 1: lightye didst spill the blood of Bussah dishold back Hengyankyapta
- 8:24Speaker 1: Hirokin died before yet sooner in like fashion, Svivour from
- 8:29Speaker 1: life was taken. Section five? How should one paraphrase Boulder
- 8:36Speaker 1: by calling him son of Odin and Frigg, husband of Nunna,
- 8:40Speaker 1: father of Sorsetti, possessor of Hringhorny and draupnir adversary of Hooder,
- 8:46Speaker 1: companion of Hell, god of tears. Ufer uguson following the
- 8:52Speaker 1: story of Bolder, has composed a long passage in the Houstrapa,
- 8:57Speaker 1: and examples are recorded earlier to the effect the Boulder
- 9:00Speaker 1: is so termed. Section six? How should one paraphrase Nirder
- 9:06Speaker 1: by calling him God of the Vannier or kinsman of
- 9:09Speaker 1: the Vanir or Wain, father of Frere and Freya, god
- 9:14Speaker 1: of wealth bestowed, so says Twarder Siareksen Gudrun's self by
- 9:19Speaker 1: ill her sons did kill the wise god bride at
- 9:23Speaker 1: the Wain's side, grieved men tell Odin taine steeds well
- 9:28Speaker 1: twas not the saying Humdir spared sword playing. Here it
- 9:32Speaker 1: is recorded that Scotti departed from Urder, as has already
- 9:36Speaker 1: been written. Section seven. How should one paraphrase Frere thus
- 9:42Speaker 1: by calling him son of Nirder, brother of Freya, and
- 9:46Speaker 1: also god of Vanir and kinsmen of the Vanir and Wain,
- 9:50Speaker 1: and god of the fertile season, and god of wealth gifts,
- 9:54Speaker 1: Thus saying Aegiel scaligrimson for that Grotebjorn in goods and Geir,
- 10:00Speaker 1: Frere Andjuder have fairly blessed. Frere is called adversary a belly,
- 10:05Speaker 1: even as Ivender spoiler of Skalds, saying, when the earl's
- 10:09Speaker 1: foe wish to inhabit the outer bounds of Belly's hater,
- 10:14Speaker 1: he is the possessor of Skidblodnir and of that bore
- 10:17Speaker 1: which is called gold bristle, even as it is told
- 10:20Speaker 1: here Ivaldi's offspring in ancient days went to shape Skidblodnir
- 10:26Speaker 1: foremost of ships, fairly for Frere, choicely for Nider's child.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Thus speaks ulfer ugusen the battle bold Frere rideth first
- 10:36Speaker 1: on the golden bristled barrow bore to the bail fire
- 10:39Speaker 1: of Bolder, and leads the people. The bore is also
- 10:43Speaker 1: called fearful tusk. Section eight. How should one Paraphray's Hindaler
- 10:50Speaker 1: by calling him son of nine mothers or watchmen of
- 10:53Speaker 1: the gods, as already has been written, or white God,
- 10:57Speaker 1: foe of Loki, seeker of Freya's necklace. A sword is
- 11:01Speaker 1: called him Dollar's head, for it is said that he
- 11:04Speaker 1: was pierced by a man's head. The tale thereof is
- 11:07Speaker 1: told in heim Dollar Galder, and ever since a head
- 11:10Speaker 1: is called heim Dollar's measure, a sword is called man's measure.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Heimdalar is the possessor of Gultopper. He is also frequenter
- 11:19Speaker 1: of Vagascar and Seingstein, where he contended with Loki for
- 11:23Speaker 1: the necklace brisinga men. He is also called vindler ufer
- 11:28Speaker 1: Ugusen composed a long passage in the Housdrappa on that legend,
- 11:32Speaker 1: and there it is written that they were in the
- 11:34Speaker 1: form of seals. Heimdalar also is son of Odin section nine,
- 11:41Speaker 1: how should one Peraphray's tyr by calling him the one
- 11:44Speaker 1: handed God and fosterer of the wolf, god of Battle's
- 11:48Speaker 1: son of Odin section ten, how should one peraphrase Braggie
- 11:54Speaker 1: by calling him husband of Dun, first maker of poetry
- 11:59Speaker 1: and the long beer did God after his name. A
- 12:02Speaker 1: man who has a great beard is called beard. Braggie
- 12:05Speaker 1: and son of Odin Section eleven. How should one paraphrase
- 12:11Speaker 1: Vidar They may be called the silent God, possessor of
- 12:15Speaker 1: the iron shoe, foe and slayer of Fenris, Wolf, avenger
- 12:19Speaker 1: of the gods, divine dweller in the homesteads of the Fathers,
- 12:23Speaker 1: son of Odin, and brother of the Esir. Section twelve.
- 12:28Speaker 1: How should Volly be paraphrased thus by calling him son
- 12:32Speaker 1: of Oder and Rinder, stepson of frig, brother of the Esir,
- 12:37Speaker 1: Balder's avenger, foe and slayer of Hooder, dweller in the
- 12:42Speaker 1: homesteads of the Fathers. Section thirteen? How should one paraphrase
- 12:48Speaker 1: Hooder thus by calling him the blind God, Balder's slayer,
- 12:53Speaker 1: thrower of the mistletoe, son of Odin, companion of Hell,
- 12:58Speaker 1: foe of Volley Section fourteen. How should Uller be paraphrased
- 13:04Speaker 1: by calling him son of Sith, stepson of Thor, God
- 13:08Speaker 1: of the snowshoe, God of the beaux, hunting god, God
- 13:12Speaker 1: of the shield? Section fifteen? How should Hunir be paraphrased
- 13:18Speaker 1: by calling him benchmate or companion or friend of Odin,
- 13:22Speaker 1: the swift of God the long footed, and king of play?
- 13:26Speaker 1: Section sixteen? How should one paraphrase. Loki thus call him
- 13:32Speaker 1: son of Farbauti and Loufi, or of Null, brother of
- 13:36Speaker 1: Bealistir and of Helblindi, father of the monster of Van
- 13:40Speaker 1: that is Fenriswulf, and of the vast monster that is
- 13:44Speaker 1: the Midguard Serpent, and of Hell and Nari and Ali
- 13:49Speaker 1: kinsman and uncle evil, companion and benchmate of Odin and
- 13:53Speaker 1: the Esir, visitor and chest trapping of gay Ruder, thief
- 13:57Speaker 1: of the Giants, of the goat, a bri zingamen, and
- 14:01Speaker 1: of Edun's apples kinsmen of Sleipner, husband of Sigin, foe
- 14:06Speaker 1: of the gods, harmer of Sif's hair, forger of evil,
- 14:10Speaker 1: the sly god, slanderer and cheat of the gods, contriver
- 14:15Speaker 1: of Balder's death, the bound god wrangling foe of Heimdaler
- 14:20Speaker 1: and of Scotti. Even as ulfher Ugusen sings here the
- 14:25Speaker 1: famed Rainbow's defender, ready in wisdom, striveth at Singestein with
- 14:30Speaker 1: Loki for a Bouti's sin sly offspring, the son of
- 14:34Speaker 1: mothers eight and one mighty in wrath, possesses the stone
- 14:38Speaker 1: ere Loki cometh I make known songs of praise. Here
- 14:43Speaker 1: it is written that Heimdaler is the son of nine mothers.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Section seventeen. Now an account shall be given of the
- 14:52Speaker 1: source of those metaphors which have but now been recorded,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and of which no accounts were rendered before, even such
- 14:59Speaker 1: as Braggie gave to Eager telling how Thor had gone
- 15:02Speaker 1: into the east to slay trolls, and Odin rode slight
- 15:06Speaker 1: near into Eutenheim and visited that giant who was named Hrungnir.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Krumnir asked what manner of man he with the golden
- 15:13Speaker 1: helm might be, who rode through air and water, and
- 15:17Speaker 1: said that the stranger had a wondrous good steed. Odin
- 15:20Speaker 1: said he would wager his head there was no horse
- 15:22Speaker 1: in Eutenheim, they would prove equally good. Krungnir answered that
- 15:28Speaker 1: it was a good horse, but declared that he had
- 15:30Speaker 1: a much better paced horse, which was called gold main
- 15:34Speaker 1: Phrungnir had become angry and vaulted up on to his
- 15:37Speaker 1: horse and galloped after him, thinking to pay him for
- 15:40Speaker 1: his boasting. Odin galloped so furiously that he was on
- 15:44Speaker 1: the top of the next hill first, but Hrungnir was
- 15:47Speaker 1: so filled with the giant's frenzy that he took no
- 15:50Speaker 1: heed until he had come in beyond the gates of Asgard.
- 15:53Speaker 1: When he came to the hall door, the Eesir invited
- 15:56Speaker 1: him to drink. He went within and ordered drink to
- 16:00Speaker 1: be brought to him, and then those flagons were brought in,
- 16:03Speaker 1: from which Thor was wont to drink, and Rumnir swilled
- 16:07Speaker 1: from each in turn. But when he had become drunken,
- 16:10Speaker 1: then big words were not wanting. He boasted that he
- 16:13Speaker 1: would lift up Valhalla and carry it to Uttenheim and
- 16:17Speaker 1: sink Asgard and kill all the gods, save that he
- 16:20Speaker 1: would take Freya and Siff home with him. Freya alone
- 16:23Speaker 1: dared pour for him, and he vowed that he would
- 16:26Speaker 1: drink all the ale of the Esir. But when his
- 16:29Speaker 1: overbearing insolence became tiresome to the Esir, they called on
- 16:33Speaker 1: the name of Thor. Straightway, Thor came into the hall
- 16:38Speaker 1: brandishing his hammer, and he was very wroth and asked
- 16:41Speaker 1: who would advise that these dogs of giants be permitted
- 16:44Speaker 1: to drink there, or who had granted Hrumnir safe conduct
- 16:47Speaker 1: to be in Valhalla, or why Freya should pour for
- 16:50Speaker 1: him as at a feast of the Esir. Then Rumnir answered,
- 16:54Speaker 1: looking at Thor with no friendly eyes, and said that
- 16:58Speaker 1: Odin had invited him to drink and he was under
- 17:01Speaker 1: his safe conduct. Thor declared that Hrumnir should repent of
- 17:04Speaker 1: that invitation before he got away. Hrungnir answered that asa
- 17:08Speaker 1: Thor would have scant renowned for killing him, weaponless as
- 17:12Speaker 1: he was. It were a greater trial of his courage
- 17:15Speaker 1: if he dared fight with Hrungnir on the border at Grotunegard.
- 17:20Speaker 1: And it was a great folly, said he, when I
- 17:22Speaker 1: left my shield and hon behind at home. If I
- 17:25Speaker 1: had my weapons here, then we should try single combat.
- 17:28Speaker 1: But as matters stand, I declare thee a coward if
- 17:31Speaker 1: thou wilt slay me a weaponless man. Thor was by
- 17:36Speaker 1: no means anxious to avoid the fight when challenged to
- 17:38Speaker 1: the field, for no one had ever offered him single
- 17:41Speaker 1: combat before then. Hrumnir went his way and galloped furiously
- 17:45Speaker 1: until he came to Eutenheim. The news of his journey
- 17:49Speaker 1: was spread abroad among the giants, and it became noised
- 17:52Speaker 1: abroad that a meeting had been arranged between him and Thor.
- 17:55Speaker 1: The giants deemed that they had much at stake, who
- 17:58Speaker 1: should win the victory so they looked for ill at
- 18:01Speaker 1: Thor's hands. If Hrungnir perished, he being strongest of them all,
- 18:06Speaker 1: then the giants made a man of clay, a Grotunigard.
- 18:09Speaker 1: He was nine miles high and three broad under the armpits.
- 18:13Speaker 1: But they could get no heart big enough to fit
- 18:15Speaker 1: him until they took one from a mare. Even that
- 18:18Speaker 1: was not steadfast within him. When Thor came, Hrungnir had
- 18:22Speaker 1: the heart, which is notorious of hard stone, and spiked
- 18:25Speaker 1: with three corners, even as the written characterist sins formed,
- 18:29Speaker 1: which men call Hrungnir's heart. His head also was of stone.
- 18:34Speaker 1: His shield, too, was stone wide and thick, and he
- 18:37Speaker 1: had the shield before him when he stood at Grotunigard
- 18:40Speaker 1: and waited for Thor. Moreover, he had a hon for
- 18:43Speaker 1: a weapon, and brandished it over his shoulders, and he
- 18:46Speaker 1: was not a pretty sight. At one side of him
- 18:49Speaker 1: stood the clay giant, which was called mu Kurkhalfi. He
- 18:53Speaker 1: was sore afraid, and it is said that he wet
- 18:56Speaker 1: himself when he saw Thor. Thor went to the meeting place,
- 19:00Speaker 1: and Taelfi with him. Then Taofi ran forward to the
- 19:04Speaker 1: spot where Hrungnir stood and said to him, Thou standest
- 19:07Speaker 1: unwarily giant, having the shield before thee. For Thor has
- 19:11Speaker 1: seen THEE and comes hither down below the earth, and
- 19:14Speaker 1: will come at THEE from beneath. Then Hrungnir thrust the
- 19:17Speaker 1: shield under his feet and stood upon it, wielding the
- 19:20Speaker 1: hon with both hands. Then speedily he saw lightnings and
- 19:25Speaker 1: heard great claps of thunder. Then he saw Thor in
- 19:28Speaker 1: godlike anger, who came forward furiously and swung the hammer
- 19:32Speaker 1: and cast it at hung near from afar off, Hrungnir
- 19:36Speaker 1: lifted up the hone in both hands and cast it
- 19:38Speaker 1: against him. It struck the hammer in flight, and the
- 19:42Speaker 1: Hon burst in sunder. One part fell to the earth,
- 19:45Speaker 1: and thence ar come all the flint rocks. The other
- 19:48Speaker 1: burst on Thor's head, so that he fell forward to
- 19:51Speaker 1: the earth. But the hammer Mulenir struck hrung Near in
- 19:55Speaker 1: the middle of the head and smashed his skull into
- 19:58Speaker 1: small crumbs, and he fell forward upon Thor, so that
- 20:02Speaker 1: his foot lay over Thor's neck. Tielfi struck at Mukharkafi,
- 20:06Speaker 1: and he fell with little glory. Thereupon, Tilfi went over
- 20:10Speaker 1: to Thor and would have lifted Rumnir's foot off him,
- 20:12Speaker 1: but could not find sufficient strength straightway. All the easier
- 20:17Speaker 1: came up when they learned that Thor was fallen, and
- 20:20Speaker 1: would have lifted the foot from off him, and could
- 20:22Speaker 1: do nothing. Then Magni came up, son of Thor and
- 20:25Speaker 1: yarn Saksa. He was then three nights old. He cast
- 20:29Speaker 1: the foot of Hrungnir off Thor and spake, See how
- 20:31Speaker 1: ill it is, father, that I came so late. I
- 20:34Speaker 1: had struck this giant dead with my fist. Methinks if
- 20:37Speaker 1: I had met with him. Thor arose and welcomed his son,
- 20:41Speaker 1: saying that he should surely become great, and I will
- 20:44Speaker 1: give thee he said, the horse gold mane, which Hrumnir possessed.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Then Odin spake and said that Thor did wrong to
- 20:52Speaker 1: give the good horse to the son of a giantess
- 20:55Speaker 1: and not to his father. Thor went home to Throo Dvangar,
- 20:59Speaker 1: and then remained sticking in his head. Then came the
- 21:03Speaker 1: wise woman who was called Groa, wife of Arvondil the Valiant.
- 21:07Speaker 1: She sang her spells over Thor until the hone was loosened.
- 21:12Speaker 1: But when Thor knew that and thought that there was
- 21:14Speaker 1: hope that the hone might be removed. He desired to
- 21:17Speaker 1: reward Groa for her leech craft and make her glad,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and told her these things that he had waded from
- 21:24Speaker 1: the north over icy stream, and had borne Arvandrille in
- 21:28Speaker 1: a basket on his back from the north out of Euttenheim.
- 21:32Speaker 1: And he added for a token that one of Arvondil's
- 21:34Speaker 1: toes had stuck out of the basket and became frozen.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Wherefore Thor broke it off and cast it up into
- 21:40Speaker 1: the heavens, and made thereof the star called Arvondel's toe.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Thor said that it would not be long ere Arvondel
- 21:48Speaker 1: came home. But Groa was so rejoiced that she forgot
- 21:51Speaker 1: her incantations, and the hone was not loosened, and stands
- 21:56Speaker 1: yet in Thor's head. Therefore it is forbidden to cast
- 21:59Speaker 1: a home across the floor, for then the hone is
- 22:02Speaker 1: stirred in Thor's head. The Odoufer of Vinn has made
- 22:06Speaker 1: a song after this tale in the house loom, it
- 22:09Speaker 1: says there on the high and painted surface of the
- 22:13Speaker 1: hollow shield. Still further, one may see how the Giant's
- 22:16Speaker 1: terror sought the home of Giotum, the angry son of Yurd,
- 22:21Speaker 1: drove to the play of steel below him thundered the moonway.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Rage swelled in the heart of Miley's brother. All the
- 22:30Speaker 1: bright God's high mansions burned before Uller's kinsman with hail.
- 22:35Speaker 1: The earth was beaten along his course. When the he
- 22:38Speaker 1: goats drew, the God of the smooth waned forward to
- 22:41Speaker 1: meet the grizzly giant the Earth, the spouse of odin
- 22:44Speaker 1: straightway reft asunder no truth made Balder's brother with a
- 22:49Speaker 1: bitter foe of earth folk. Rocks shook and crags were shivered.
- 22:54Speaker 1: The shining upper heaven burned. I saw the giant of
- 22:58Speaker 1: the boat sailed sea reef waver and give way fast
- 23:01Speaker 1: before him, seeing his warlike slayer swiftly the shining shield
- 23:07Speaker 1: rim shot neath the cliff ward's shoe soles. That was
- 23:11Speaker 1: the wise God's mandate. The war of vulkyries willed it
- 23:15Speaker 1: the champion of the waste land. Not long thereafter waited
- 23:18Speaker 1: for the speedy blow delivered by the friend of the
- 23:21Speaker 1: snout Troll's crusher, he who of breath despoileth Belly's baleful
- 23:26Speaker 1: hirelings felled on the shield rim circled the fiend of
- 23:31Speaker 1: the Roaring Mountain, the monster of the glenfield, before the
- 23:35Speaker 1: mighty hammer sank when the hill Dane's breaker struck down
- 23:39Speaker 1: the hideous catiff. Then the hone hard broken, hurled by
- 23:43Speaker 1: the ogress Lover, whirred into the brain ridge of Earth's sun,
- 23:48Speaker 1: that the wedder of steels sticking unloosened in the skull
- 23:51Speaker 1: of Odin's offspring stood. There all be sprinkled with Ainride's blood,
- 23:57Speaker 1: until the wise ale Goddess, with wondrous lay enchanted the
- 24:01Speaker 1: vaunted woe rust ruddy from the win god's sloping temples
- 24:06Speaker 1: painted on its circuit, I see them clearly pictured the
- 24:10Speaker 1: fair boss shield with stories figured I had from tor
