- 0:00Speaker 1: The brilliant column this National Review, and he's also the
- 0:04Speaker 1: author of a great book. You should get This book
- 0:06Speaker 1: are Broken Elections. John Fund follow him on Twitter as well,
- 0:11Speaker 1: and he's with us now, John Fund, how you doing.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Well?
- 0:16Speaker 3: Survived the storm, didn't we? Yeah, it's much better today.
- 0:20Speaker 3: So hey, let me just get to elections. We got
- 0:22Speaker 3: a mayoral election that's crucial coming up. How secure are
- 0:26Speaker 3: these elections you think in New York? The machines, the ballots,
- 0:29Speaker 3: how much funny business is still going on? Well?
- 0:33Speaker 2: New York, as you know, is a blue city and
- 0:36Speaker 2: the rules are blue, and that's why the voters should
- 0:39Speaker 2: be blue about ballid integrity. You know, it was just
- 0:42Speaker 2: a few years ago that the Democrat who ran the
- 0:46Speaker 2: Board of Elections for Manhattan admitted that there were lots
- 0:49Speaker 2: of people who were voting in New York who shouldn't have.
- 0:52Speaker 2: There were buses in Chinatown that would come and bring
- 0:56Speaker 2: lots of people and they would vote one place and
- 0:58Speaker 2: then they would go on to the next place. He
- 1:00Speaker 2: was fired by Bill de Blasio, who was the mayor
- 1:02Speaker 2: at the time. So I don't think the election is secure. However,
- 1:07Speaker 2: as it stands right now, doesn't look like it's going
- 1:10Speaker 2: to be super close. I think that the real question
- 1:15Speaker 2: will be what's the voter integrity situation in New Jersey
- 1:18Speaker 2: where I think the election for governor, which is very important,
- 1:21Speaker 2: is going to be super tight.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and who would trust anything in New Jersey if
- 1:26Speaker 1: you know what I.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Mean, Well, you're right because New Jersey, during the pandemic
- 1:31Speaker 2: for COVID, completely loosened its laws. Everybody in the state
- 1:35Speaker 2: now gets an absentee ballot in the mail, the voter
- 1:39Speaker 2: registration roles having been cleaned in decades. Patterson has a
- 1:44Speaker 2: consistent pattern of having people going to jail for voter fraud.
- 1:48Speaker 2: It's not theoretical, it's real. And I worry a lot
- 1:52Speaker 2: about New Jersey because I think the Republican candidate is
- 1:55Speaker 2: surging and the Democratic candidate is wrapped up in the
- 1:58Speaker 2: scandal from her days at the Naval Academy where her explanation,
- 2:02Speaker 2: you know, she's changing it every day because she originally
- 2:05Speaker 2: said I wasn't allowed to graduate with my class because
- 2:09Speaker 2: I refused to rat on fellow cadets. Except the Naval
- 2:12Speaker 2: Academy's policy is it never punished people who who wouldn't rat,
- 2:18Speaker 2: so none of it holds up. New Jersey is an
- 2:21Speaker 2: economic basket case. Unemployment is high, taxes are through the roof,
- 2:26Speaker 2: people are leaving the state. I think if the future
- 2:29Speaker 2: of New Jersey is going to be on the line
- 2:31Speaker 2: in November.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Yeah, So why is it close? Shitarelly is a pretty
- 2:34Speaker 1: good candidate, She's horrible. Why is it close?
- 2:38Speaker 2: Because New Jersey has seen a whole bunch of people
- 2:40Speaker 2: moved to Florida and North Carolina and other states. You know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: it's the same thing. And why it's is it so
- 2:47Speaker 2: hard to elect a guy like Rudy Giuliani or Michael
- 2:50Speaker 2: Bloomberg in New York Because the population is not the same.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Lots of people have died off or moved and the
- 2:58Speaker 2: people coming in are different voters. So I think that's
- 3:01Speaker 2: the major reason. And secondly, you know, let's face it,
- 3:06Speaker 2: Trump's you know, in the low forties in New Jersey
- 3:08Speaker 2: in terms of approval, and the whole political structure, in
- 3:12Speaker 2: the media structure in New Jersey. You know how hard
- 3:14Speaker 2: it is to break through New Jersey. People listen to
- 3:18Speaker 2: New York radio. They only have one radio station that
- 3:21Speaker 2: you know, broadcasts to the state, So it's hard to
- 3:24Speaker 2: get a message.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Out yeah, hey, John Fund. Even with New York, these
- 3:29Speaker 1: like Mom Donnie will talk about the crisis. It's an
- 3:31Speaker 1: affordability crisis. We've got this crisis that Chris Well Democrats
- 3:35Speaker 1: have run every inch of New York government, city and
- 3:37Speaker 1: state for the last fifteen years. So why wouldn't a
- 3:40Speaker 1: voter say, well, maybe I should change parties, maybe we
- 3:42Speaker 1: should vote for the other side.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Well, look, the Republican Party is a horrible brand name.
- 3:49Speaker 2: It just does in New York City. And let's face it,
- 3:52Speaker 2: Andrew Cuomo is not exactly the apostle of change and reformer.
- 3:58Speaker 2: We remember his time as governor of New York. I mean,
- 4:02Speaker 2: you know the joke. The joke is that he killed
- 4:04Speaker 2: more people in the nursing homes than he ever than
- 4:08Speaker 2: anyone and the other governor in New York. So I
- 4:12Speaker 2: have to tell you, I think that the election in
- 4:15Speaker 2: New York City is going to be close than people think.
- 4:18Speaker 2: But remember, you know, there's no runoff. Mandamie. If he
- 4:22Speaker 2: gets you know, one more vote than Cuomo or Sliwa,
- 4:25Speaker 2: he wins.
- 4:27Speaker 1: So the debate is Thursday night. Clomo's a pretty weak debater,
- 4:31Speaker 1: Mam Donnie's a good debater. Curtis is a great debater.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Clomo will look weak probably compared to them. And if
- 4:37Speaker 1: Curtis lands some real knockout punches, could that turn things around?
- 4:42Speaker 2: You know, the question always is who watches debates from
- 4:46Speaker 2: start to finish? Very few people. The question is what
- 4:48Speaker 2: are going to be the clips from the debate that
- 4:50Speaker 2: get played on TV and radio? And unless there is
- 4:55Speaker 2: a seminal moment where, you know, Mondammie looks like a
- 4:58Speaker 2: deer in the headlights of a car, I just don't
- 5:01Speaker 2: think that's good. I just don't think the debate is
- 5:03Speaker 2: going to be the deciding factor. Yeah, you know what,
- 5:06Speaker 2: that doesn't mean people shouldn't vote because there have been upsets.
- 5:10Speaker 2: There have been upsets in many races in New York City,
- 5:14Speaker 2: and there's always the case where people go into the
- 5:17Speaker 2: voting booth and say, do I really want to take
- 5:19Speaker 2: a chance on a socialist?
- 5:21Speaker 3: Now?
- 5:22Speaker 1: The way to defeat mom Donnie is normally you'd drive
- 5:25Speaker 1: his unfavorables way up into the near fifty five sixty
- 5:29Speaker 1: and you need the super packs running tons of ads
- 5:32Speaker 1: against him. Where were they that we saw none of
- 5:35Speaker 1: that in this election?
- 5:37Speaker 2: Well, the business community basically decided that they had a
- 5:40Speaker 2: choice to make. It could either go all out to
- 5:43Speaker 2: defeat him and be on his blacklist should he win,
- 5:47Speaker 2: or they could sit down privately behind the scenes, as
- 5:50Speaker 2: they've been doing with him the last few weeks, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 2: trying to get table crumbs from him and see if
- 5:57Speaker 2: they can survive him if he gets elected. The business
- 6:00Speaker 2: community of New York City has never been accused of
- 6:03Speaker 2: political courage.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Well, hey, if he is elected, we did survive eight
- 6:08Speaker 1: years of the Blasio, so we'd be pretty pretty good
- 6:12Speaker 1: chance of getting through this, right.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Well, yes and no. Look, the good news about Mondamie
- 6:18Speaker 2: if he wins, is his powers. They're not nearly here.
- 6:22Speaker 2: The state legislature controls the income tax, the MTA is
- 6:26Speaker 2: not in his hands. He does have the police department.
- 6:29Speaker 2: That's going to be a problem. Crime will go up.
- 6:31Speaker 2: He's not going to keep Tish as the commissioner, so
- 6:33Speaker 2: they're going to be real problems. But his powers are circumscribed.
- 6:36Speaker 2: The real danger mark is this, the perception that the
- 6:41Speaker 2: city will go downhill will be there, and perceptions can
- 6:44Speaker 2: become reality. I think people will start thinking about leaving
- 6:48Speaker 2: New York City simply. I've been worried about time time
- 6:54Speaker 2: to think, leaving time not to invest a lot of
- 6:56Speaker 2: money in the new building project or a new a
- 7:00Speaker 2: new factory. Remember the Amazon thing that was the real
- 7:04Speaker 2: break point. Amazon was basically forced out of Queens by
- 7:08Speaker 2: AOC and her allies, including Zoron. He was part of
- 7:11Speaker 2: all that and at nine thousand jobs. The question is
- 7:15Speaker 2: will the perception of New York is an anti business
- 7:18Speaker 2: city be heightened? And it will, even though Mondambe can't
- 7:23Speaker 2: really do as much as we fear.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Hey, John Fund talk about John Fetterman for a moment.
- 7:28Speaker 1: The guy looked crazy at first, but he's been the
- 7:30Speaker 1: most common since Democrat trying to talk sense in these
- 7:34Speaker 1: other Democrats. Will there ever come a point where the
- 7:37Speaker 1: Democrat party listens to him, maybe tries to get back
- 7:39Speaker 1: towards the center.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Mark. You've just explained how we can convince Democrats to
- 7:46Speaker 2: have common sense. All they have to have is a
- 7:49Speaker 2: stroke and some brain you know, problems, and when they
- 7:53Speaker 2: wake up, you know, suddenly it all becomes clear to them.
- 7:56Speaker 2: The problem is you can't replicate that so easily in
- 7:59Speaker 2: other Democrats. I believe Besterman is a one off. He
- 8:04Speaker 2: is just a complete individualist. He doesn't follow the party line.
- 8:08Speaker 2: He doesn't like people telling him what to do. He's
- 8:10Speaker 2: not a Republican. He's not going to switch parties. But
- 8:13Speaker 2: he is a reminder to Democrats that they pay a
- 8:16Speaker 2: price for marching and lockstep behind the woke community. And look,
- 8:22Speaker 2: Fetterman is popular in Pennsylvania. He has He just has
- 8:27Speaker 2: the ability, whether you call it courage or stubbornness, he
- 8:30Speaker 2: just will not follow the looke ideology. And I think
- 8:33Speaker 2: that's a political winner. It's just that other Democrats are
- 8:36Speaker 2: too scared to try that same path. Well.
- 8:39Speaker 1: John Fund brilliant, is always great talking to you. Make
