- 0:15Speaker 1: Book of the Thousand Knights and a Night Volume nine
- 0:19Speaker 1: by Anonymous, translated by Richard Francis Burton, night nine hundred
- 0:24Speaker 1: and sixty three. When it was the nine hundred and
- 0:28Speaker 1: sixty third night, she said it hath reached me o
- 0:32Speaker 1: auspicious king, that quoth the Dambseul to her sister. I
- 0:36Speaker 1: have covenanted with him that I will not be united
- 0:39Speaker 1: to him unlawfully. But as he hath risked himself and
- 0:44Speaker 1: incur these perules, I will be earth for his treading,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and thus to his sandals, replied her sister. In this intent,
- 0:52Speaker 1: may Allah deliver him. And my mistress rejoined. Soon, Shalt
- 0:56Speaker 1: thou see how I will do so I may lawfully
- 0:59Speaker 1: forgot with him. And there is no help but that
- 1:02Speaker 1: I lavish my heart's blood to devise these. Now as
- 1:07Speaker 1: we were in talk, behold we heard a great noise
- 1:10Speaker 1: and turning so the caliph making for her chamber. So
- 1:14Speaker 1: engrossed was he by the thought of her. Whereupon she
- 1:17Speaker 1: took me o prince of true believers, and hid me
- 1:20Speaker 1: in a soutterin and shut down the trap door upon me.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Then she went out to meet the Caliph, who entered
- 1:27Speaker 1: and sat down, whilst she stood between his hands to
- 1:30Speaker 1: serve him, and commanded to bring wine. Now the Caliph
- 1:34Speaker 1: loved adamson named Banja, who was the mother of al
- 1:37Speaker 1: mutaz Bellah. But they had fallen out and parted, and
- 1:42Speaker 1: in the pride of her beauty and loveliness, she would
- 1:44Speaker 1: not make peace with him. Nor would al Mutawakil, for
- 1:48Speaker 1: the dignity of the Caliphate and the kingship, make peace
- 1:51Speaker 1: with her. Neither humble himself to her. Albeit his heart
- 1:55Speaker 1: was aflame with passion for her, but sought to solace
- 1:58Speaker 1: his mind from her with her mates among the slave girls,
- 2:02Speaker 1: and with going in to them in their chambers. Now
- 2:06Speaker 1: he loved Shajarat al Dur's singing, so she bade her sing.
- 2:11Speaker 1: When she took the lute, and tuning the strings, sang
- 2:14Speaker 1: these verses. The world tricks I admire betwixt me and her,
- 2:20Speaker 1: how as parted the world would to me incline. I
- 2:24Speaker 1: shunned thee till said they, he knows not love. I
- 2:29Speaker 1: sought thee till said they, No patience is mine. Then
- 2:34Speaker 1: O love of her add to my longing each night,
- 2:38Speaker 1: and all solace thy comfort. The dooms they assign'd soft
- 2:42Speaker 1: as silk as her touch, and her low sweet voice.
- 2:45Speaker 1: TwixT o'er much and o'er little, A draweth the line
- 2:51Speaker 1: and thee whereof Allah, said be ye, And they became
- 2:55Speaker 1: to men's wit like the working of wine. When the
- 3:00Speaker 1: Caliph heard his verses, he was pleasured with exceeding pleasure.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And I, also, a commander of the faithful, was pleasured
- 3:07Speaker 1: in my hiding place. And but for the bounty of
- 3:09Speaker 1: Almighty Allah, I had cried out, and we had been disgraced.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Then she sung also these couplets. I embrace him, yet
- 3:20Speaker 1: after him yearns my soul for his love. But can
- 3:23Speaker 1: aught than embrace be nigher. I kiss his lips to
- 3:27Speaker 1: assuage my love. But each kiss guards it glow with
- 3:31Speaker 1: more flaming fire. Tis as though my vitals eye thirst
- 3:35Speaker 1: un quenched, till I see two souls mixed in one
- 3:38Speaker 1: and tire. The Caliph was delighted and said, O, Shajarat
- 3:44Speaker 1: al dur ask a boon of me. She replied, O,
- 3:49Speaker 1: Commander of the Faithful, I ask THEE my freedom for
- 3:53Speaker 1: the sake of the reward thou wilt obtain. Therein quoth
- 3:57Speaker 1: he thou art free for the love of Allah. Whereupon
- 4:01Speaker 1: she kissed ground before him. He resumed, Take the lute
- 4:06Speaker 1: and sing me somewhat on the subject of my slave girl,
- 4:09Speaker 1: of whom I am enamoured with warmest love. The folk
- 4:14Speaker 1: seek my pleasure, and I seek hers. So she took
- 4:18Speaker 1: the lute and sang these two couplets, My charmer, who
- 4:23Speaker 1: spellest my piety, on all accounts, I will have THEE
- 4:27Speaker 1: have thee, or by humble suits which besethes love, or
- 4:32Speaker 1: by force more fitting my sovereignty. The Caliph admired these
- 4:38Speaker 1: verses and said, now take up thy lute and sing
- 4:41Speaker 1: me a song setting out my case with three damsels
- 4:44Speaker 1: who hold the reins of my heart and make rest depart.
- 4:48Speaker 1: And they are thyself and that wilful one, and another
- 4:53Speaker 1: I will not name, who hath not her like. So
- 4:57Speaker 1: she took the lute, and, playing a lively man, sang
- 5:00Speaker 1: these couplets three lovely girls hold my bridle rein, and
- 5:06Speaker 1: in high steed my heart over rein. I have none
- 5:10Speaker 1: to obey amid all mankind, but obeying them I but
- 5:14Speaker 1: win this dame. This is done through the kingship of love,
- 5:18Speaker 1: whereby the best of my kingship they made their gain.
- 5:24Speaker 1: The Caliph marveled with exceeding marvel at the aptness of
- 5:27Speaker 1: these verses to this case, and his delight inclined him
- 5:31Speaker 1: to reconciliation with the coucitron damsel. So he went forth
- 5:36Speaker 1: and made for her chamber, whither a slave girl preceded
- 5:39Speaker 1: him and announced to her the coming of the Caliph.
- 5:43Speaker 1: She advanced to meet him and kissed the ground before him.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Then she kissed his feet, and he was reconciled to her,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and she was reconciled to him. Such was the case
- 5:55Speaker 1: with the Caliph. But as regards Shajarat a Lur, she
- 5:59Speaker 1: came to me rejoicing and said, I am become a
- 6:02Speaker 1: free woman by thy blessed coming. Surely Allah will help
- 6:06Speaker 1: me in that which I shall contrive. So I may
- 6:10Speaker 1: foregather with THEE in lawful way. And I said, al hamdollillah.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Now as we were talking behold her Mamelouk eunuch entered,
- 6:20Speaker 1: and we related to him that which had passed. When
- 6:23Speaker 1: he said, praised be Allah, who hath made the affair
- 6:27Speaker 1: to end well, and we implored the Almighty to crown
- 6:30Speaker 1: his favors with thy safe faring forth the palace. Presently
- 6:34Speaker 1: appeared my mistress sister, whose name was Fatir, and Shahharat
- 6:40Speaker 1: al Dur said to her, O, my sister, how shall
- 6:43Speaker 1: we do to bring him out of the palace in safety?
- 6:46Speaker 1: For indeed Allah hath vouchsafed me man mission and the
- 6:50Speaker 1: blessing of his coming, I am become a free woman,
- 6:54Speaker 1: quoth Fatir. I see nothing for it but to dress
- 6:59Speaker 1: him in woman's gear. So she brought me a suit
- 7:02Speaker 1: of women's clothes and clad me therein. And I went
- 7:06Speaker 1: out forthwith a commander of the faithful. But when I
- 7:09Speaker 1: came to the midst of the palace, behold, I found
- 7:12Speaker 1: the Caliph seated there, with the eunuchs in attendance upon him.
- 7:16Speaker 1: When he saw me, he misdoubted of me with exceeding doubt,
- 7:20Speaker 1: and said to his suit hasten and bring me yonder handmaiden,
- 7:24Speaker 1: who is faring forth. So they brought me back to
- 7:28Speaker 1: him and raised a veil from my face, which when
- 7:30Speaker 1: he saw he knew me and questioned me of my case.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I told him the whole truth, hiding nought, and when
- 7:38Speaker 1: he heard my story, he pondered my case awhile, without
- 7:42Speaker 1: stay or delay, and going into Shajarat al Dur's chamber,
- 7:46Speaker 1: said to her, how couldst thou prefer before me one
- 7:51Speaker 1: of the sons of the merchants. She kissed ground between
- 7:55Speaker 1: his hands and told him her tale from first to last,
- 7:58Speaker 1: in accordance with the truth, and he, hearing it, had
- 8:02Speaker 1: compassion upon her, and his heart relented to her, and
- 8:06Speaker 1: he excused her by reason of love and its circumstances.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Then he went away, and her eunuch came in to
- 8:13Speaker 1: her and said, be of good cheer, for when thy
- 8:17Speaker 1: lover was set before the Caliph, he questioned him, and
- 8:21Speaker 1: he told him that which thou toldest him, word by word.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Presently the Caliph returned, and, calling me before him, said
- 8:29Speaker 1: to me, what made thee there to violate the palace
- 8:33Speaker 1: of the Caliphate? I replied, O, Commander of the fatal
- 8:38Speaker 1: it was my ignorance and passion, and my confidence in
- 8:40Speaker 1: thy clemency and generosity that drave me to this, and
- 8:45Speaker 1: I wept and kissed the ground before him. Then said he,
- 8:49Speaker 1: I pardon you both, and bade me be seated. So
- 8:53Speaker 1: I sat down, and he sent for Kazi Ahmad ibn
- 8:57Speaker 1: Abe do want and married me to her. Then he
- 9:01Speaker 1: commanded to make over all that was hers to me,
- 9:04Speaker 1: and they displayed her to me in her lodging. After
- 9:08Speaker 1: three days, I went forth and transported all her goods
- 9:11Speaker 1: and gear to my own house. So everything thou hast seen,
- 9:16Speaker 1: or commander of the faithful in my house, and whereof
- 9:19Speaker 1: thou misdoubtest is of her marriage equipage. After this, she
- 9:24Speaker 1: said to me one day, know that al Mutawakil is
- 9:28Speaker 1: a generous man, and I fear lest he remember us
- 9:31Speaker 1: with ill mind, or that some one of the envious
- 9:34Speaker 1: remind him of us. Wherefore I purpose to do somewhat
- 9:38Speaker 1: that may insure us against this, quoth I? And what
- 9:42Speaker 1: is that? And quoth she? I mean to ask his
- 9:45Speaker 1: leave to go the pilgrimage and repent of singing? I replied, right,
- 9:51Speaker 1: is this reader, thou readest? But as we were talking,
- 9:56Speaker 1: behold in came a messenger from the caliph to seek
- 9:59Speaker 1: her for that. Al Mutawakil loved her singing. So she
- 10:03Speaker 1: went with the officer and did her service to the Caliph,
- 10:06Speaker 1: who said to her, sever not thyself from us, and
- 10:11Speaker 1: she answered, I hear and I obey. Now it changed.
- 10:15Speaker 1: One day after this she went to him, he having
- 10:19Speaker 1: sent for her as was his wont. But before I knew,
- 10:23Speaker 1: she came back with her raiment rent and her eyes
- 10:27Speaker 1: full of tears. At these I was alarmed, misdoubting me
- 10:31Speaker 1: that he had commanded to seize upon us, and said,
- 10:34Speaker 1: verily we are alahs, and unto him shall we return?
- 10:39Speaker 1: Is al Mutawakil wroth with us? She replied, where is
- 10:43Speaker 1: al Mutawakil? Indeed al Mutawakil's rule is ended and his
- 10:48Speaker 1: traces blotted out, cried, I tell me what has happened,
- 10:53Speaker 1: and she He was seated behind the curtain drinking with
- 10:57Speaker 1: Alphath bin Ka Khan and Sada Khab being Sadakah, when
- 11:01Speaker 1: his son Al Muntasiir fell upon him with a company
- 11:04Speaker 1: of the Turks and slew him, and merriment was turned
- 11:08Speaker 1: to misery and joy to weeping and wailing. For annoy,
- 11:12Speaker 1: so I fled, I and a slave girl and Alas
- 11:16Speaker 1: saved us. When I heard these, or Commander of the Faithful,
- 11:20Speaker 1: I arose forthright and went down stream to Bassarah, where
- 11:24Speaker 1: the news reached me of the falling out of war
- 11:27Speaker 1: between al Muntasir and al Mustachi pi Illah. Wherefore I
- 11:32Speaker 1: was affrighted and transported my wife and all my wealth
- 11:35Speaker 1: to Bassarah. This then is my tale or Prince of
- 11:39Speaker 1: true believers. Nor have I added to or taken from
- 11:42Speaker 1: it a single syllable. So all that thou seest in
- 11:46Speaker 1: my house bearing the name of thy grandfather al Mutawakil,
- 11:50Speaker 1: is of his bounty to us, and the fount of
- 11:53Speaker 1: our fortune is from thy noble sources. For indeed here
- 11:57Speaker 1: a people of munificence and a mine of beneficence. The
- 12:02Speaker 1: Caliph marveled at his story and rejoiced there in with
- 12:05Speaker 1: joy exceeding, and Abol Hassan brought forth to him the
- 12:08Speaker 1: lady and the children she had borne him, and they
- 12:11Speaker 1: kissed ground before the Caliph, who wondered at their beauty.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Then he called for inks and paper and wrote Abu
- 12:17Speaker 1: al Hasn a patent of exemption from taxes on his
- 12:20Speaker 1: lands and houses for twenty years. Moreover, he rejoiced in
- 12:24Speaker 1: him and made him his cup companion, till the world
- 12:28Speaker 1: parted them, and they took up their abode in the tombs,
- 12:30Speaker 1: after having dwelt under the palace domes and glory be
- 12:35Speaker 1: to Alad, the King merciful of doom. And they also
- 12:40Speaker 1: tell a tale concerning Kamar al Zaman and a jeweler's wife.
- 12:46Speaker 1: There was once in time of old a merchant, height
- 12:49Speaker 1: Abd al Rahmun, whom Allah had blessed with a son
- 12:53Speaker 1: and a daughter, and for their much beauty and loveliness,
- 12:56Speaker 1: he named the girl Kaalbab al Sabah and the boy
- 12:59Speaker 1: Kamad al Zaman. When he saw what Allah had vouchsafed,
- 13:03Speaker 1: the twain of beauty and loveliness, brilliancy and symmetry, he
- 13:07Speaker 1: feared for them the evil eyes of the spires, and
- 13:10Speaker 1: the jibbing tongues of the jealous, and the craft of
- 13:12Speaker 1: the crafty, and the wows of the wicked, and shut
- 13:15Speaker 1: them up from the folk in a mansion for the
- 13:17Speaker 1: space of fourteen years, during which time none saw them
- 13:21Speaker 1: save their parents and the slave girl who served them. Now,
- 13:25Speaker 1: their father could recite the Koran, even as Alas sent
- 13:29Speaker 1: it down and also did his wife. Wherefore the mother
- 13:32Speaker 1: taught her daughter to read and recite it, and the
- 13:35Speaker 1: father his son, till both had gotten it by heart. Moreover,
- 13:39Speaker 1: the twain learned from their parents writing and reckoning, and
- 13:43Speaker 1: all manner of knowledge and polite letters, unneeded no master.
- 13:48Speaker 1: When Kamar al Zaman came to ears of manhood, the
- 13:51Speaker 1: wife said to her husband, how long wilt thou keep
- 13:54Speaker 1: thy son Kamara al Zalman sequestered from the eyes of
- 13:57Speaker 1: the folk. Is he a girl or a boy? He answered?
- 14:01Speaker 1: A boy, rejoined she, And he be a boy. Why
- 14:06Speaker 1: dost thou not carry him to the bazaar and sit
- 14:08Speaker 1: him in thy shop, that he may know the folk
- 14:11Speaker 1: and they know him in the intent that it may
- 14:13Speaker 1: become notorious among men that he is thy son. And
- 14:17Speaker 1: do thou teach him to sell and to buy peradventure
- 14:20Speaker 1: somewhat may befall thee. So shall the folk know him
- 14:23Speaker 1: for thy son, and he shall lay his hands on
- 14:26Speaker 1: thy livings. But an thou die, as the case now is,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and his say to the folk, I am the son
- 14:32Speaker 1: of the merchant Abd al Rahaman Verily they will not
- 14:36Speaker 1: believe him, but will cry, we have never seen thee,
- 14:39Speaker 1: and we knew not that he had a son. Wherefore
- 14:43Speaker 1: the government will seize thy goods, and thy son will
- 14:45Speaker 1: be despoilt. In like manner the girl. I mean to
- 14:50Speaker 1: make her known among the folk, so may be some
- 14:52Speaker 1: one of her own condition may ask her in marriage,
- 14:55Speaker 1: and we will wed her to him and rejoice in her.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Quoth he I did as of my fear for them,
- 15:02Speaker 1: from the eyes of the folk. And Shahrazad perceived the
- 15:08Speaker 1: dawn of day and ceased to say her permitted say
- 15:14Speaker 1: end of night nine hundred and sixty three, night nine
- 15:20Speaker 1: hundred and sixty four, when it was the nine hundred
- 15:23Speaker 1: and sixty fourth night, she continued it hath reached me
- 15:27Speaker 1: o auspicious king, that when the merchant's wife spake to
- 15:30Speaker 1: him in such wives, he replied, I did thus of
- 15:33Speaker 1: my fear for them from the eyes of the folk,
- 15:36Speaker 1: and because I love them both, and love is jealous
- 15:38Speaker 1: exceedingly and well saith he who spoke these verses of
- 15:43Speaker 1: my sight. I am jealous for THEE of me, of thyself,
- 15:46Speaker 1: of thy steed, of thy destiny. Though I shrine THEE
- 15:50Speaker 1: in eyes by the craze of me in such nearness Eke,
- 15:54Speaker 1: I should never see, though thou wert by my side
- 15:57Speaker 1: all the days of me till doomsday. I ne'er had
- 16:01Speaker 1: enough of thee, said his wife. Put thy trust in Allah,
- 16:06Speaker 1: for no harm betideth him whom he protecteth, and carry
- 16:10Speaker 1: him with thee this very day to the shop. Then
- 16:13Speaker 1: he clad the boy in the costliest clothes, and he
- 16:16Speaker 1: became a seduction to all who on him cast sight,
- 16:20Speaker 1: and an affliction to the heart of each lover white.
- 16:24Speaker 1: His father took him and carried him to the market,
- 16:27Speaker 1: whilst all who saw him were ravished with him and
- 16:30Speaker 1: accosted him, kissing his hand and saluting him with the Salam.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Quoth one. Indeed, the sun Hath risen in such a place,
- 16:39Speaker 1: and blazeth in the bazaar. And another the rising place
- 16:43Speaker 1: of the full moon is in such a quarter, and
- 16:46Speaker 1: a third the new moon of the festival Hath appeared
- 16:50Speaker 1: to the creatures of Allah, and they went on to
- 16:53Speaker 1: allude to the boy in talk, and called down blessings
- 16:57Speaker 1: upon him. But his father scothed a foe for following
- 17:00Speaker 1: his son to gaze upon him, because he was abashed
- 17:03Speaker 1: at their talk. But he could not hinder one of
- 17:06Speaker 1: them from talking, so he fell to abusing the boy's
- 17:09Speaker 1: mother and cursing her because she had been the cause
- 17:12Speaker 1: of his bringing him out. And as he gazed about,
- 17:15Speaker 1: he still saw the fog crowding upon him behind, and
- 17:18Speaker 1: before then he walked on till he reached his shop, and,
- 17:22Speaker 1: opening it, sat down and seated his son before him,
- 17:26Speaker 1: after which he again looked out and found the thoroughfare
- 17:29Speaker 1: blocked with people, for all the passers by going and coming,
- 17:33Speaker 1: stopped before the shop to stare at the beautiful race
- 17:36Speaker 1: and could not leave him, And all the men and
- 17:39Speaker 1: women crowded in knoughts about him, applying to themselves the
- 17:42Speaker 1: words of him, who said, thou madest beauty to spoil men'sprite,
- 17:48Speaker 1: and saidst all my servants fear my reproof. But lovely,
- 17:53Speaker 1: thou lovest all loveliness, How them shall thy servants refrain
- 17:58Speaker 1: from love. When the merchant Abbd al Rachman saw that
- 18:02Speaker 1: folk thus crowding about him, and standing in rows, both
- 18:06Speaker 1: women and men, to fixed eyes upon his son, he
- 18:08Speaker 1: was sore, ashamed and confounded, and knew not what to do.
- 18:13Speaker 1: But presently there came up from the end of the
- 18:15Speaker 1: bazaar a man of the wandering dervishes, clad in haircloth,
- 18:19Speaker 1: the garb of the pious servants of Allah, and seeing
- 18:22Speaker 1: Kamar al Zaman sitting there as he were a branch
- 18:25Speaker 1: of bin springing from a mound of saffron, poured forth
- 18:29Speaker 1: copious tears and recited these two couplets. A wound uprising
- 18:35Speaker 1: from as sanding, all like full moon, shining bright as sheen,
- 18:39Speaker 1: I saw and said, what is thy name? Replied he
- 18:43Speaker 1: la Llah? What asked I, lily? And he answered la La.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Then the dervish fell to walking, now drawing near and
- 18:55Speaker 1: now moving away, and wiping his gray hairs with his
- 18:58Speaker 1: right hand, while the heart of the crowd was cloven
- 19:01Speaker 1: asunder for all of him. When he looked upon the boy,
- 19:05Speaker 1: his eyes were dazzled, and his wit confounded. And exemplified
- 19:09Speaker 1: in him was the saying of the poet. While that
- 19:12Speaker 1: fair faced boy abode in the place moon of breakfast fate,
- 19:16Speaker 1: he lit by his face low. There came a shake
- 19:19Speaker 1: with leisury pace, a reverent trusting to Allah's grace and
- 19:23Speaker 1: asthetic signals. His gait displayed he had studied love both
- 19:28Speaker 1: by day and night, and had special knowledge of wrong
- 19:31Speaker 1: and right, both for lead and less. He repined his pride,
- 19:35Speaker 1: and his form like toothpeak, was lean and slight, and
- 19:40Speaker 1: old bones with faded skin were overlaid in such arts.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Our shake was an azami with a katamite, ever in
- 19:48Speaker 1: company in the love of woman. A platonist he, but
- 19:52Speaker 1: in either verst to the full degree, and zanab to
- 19:56Speaker 1: him was the same as Zaid. Distraught by the fair
- 19:59Speaker 1: he or the fair or spring camp wailed bewept ruins,
- 20:04Speaker 1: bare dry branch thou heads deemed him for stress of care,
- 20:08Speaker 1: which the morning breeze swayed here and there. For only
- 20:12Speaker 1: the stone is all hardness made in the lot of love.
- 20:15Speaker 1: He was wondrous, wise and wide awake, with all seeing eyes.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Its rough and its mooth. He had tried and tries,
- 20:23Speaker 1: and hugged back and dough in the self same guise,
- 20:26Speaker 1: and with gray beard and beardless alike he played. Then
- 20:31Speaker 1: he came up to the boy and gave him a
- 20:33Speaker 1: root of sweet basil, whereupon his father put forth his
- 20:36Speaker 1: hand to his pouch and brought out for him some
- 20:39Speaker 1: small matter of silver, saying take thy portion of dervish,
- 20:43Speaker 1: and went thy ways. He took the ditrimus, but sat
