- 0:07in 1952 two brothers morris and jack childs both
- 0:15longtime senior officials within the communist
- 0:18party usa approached the fbi and quietly agreed
- 0:22to become informants What followed was one of
- 0:25the longest running and most successful counterintelligence
- 0:29operations in FBI history, codenamed Operation
- 0:33Solo, which continued for more than a quarter
- 0:36century without ever being discovered by either
- 0:39the party or Soviet intelligence. Morris Childs,
- 0:46in particular, held a position of genuine trust
- 0:49within international communist circles. Because
- 0:52of his standing, he became the Communist Party
- 0:55USA's principal liaison to the Soviet Communist
- 0:59Party, traveling regularly to Moscow and meeting
- 1:03personally with senior Soviet leadership, including,
- 1:06over the following decades, essentially every
- 1:10general secretary from Khrushchev through Brezhnev,
- 1:13Andropov, and Chernenko. a courier for both sides.
- 1:24Morris Child's role gave Operation Solo an extraordinary
- 1:29window into Soviet strategic thinking. He personally
- 1:33carried substantial sums of covert Soviet cash,
- 1:37funneled to the American Party to fund its operations.
- 1:41Funds that the FBI... Remarkably, allowed to
- 1:45flow largely undisturbed, since seizing the money
- 1:48would have exposed the operation and ended its
- 1:51usefulness. Instead, the Bureau used Solow's
- 1:55access for something far more valuable than disrupting
- 1:58one relatively small American political party.
- 2:01Real -time insight into internal Kremlin debates
- 2:05and Soviet foreign policy thinking, delivered
- 2:08by a source the Soviets themselves considered
- 2:11completely trustworthy. Child's reporting reached
- 2:17the highest levels of the American government.
- 2:20Several presidents briefed on Operation Solo's
- 2:24product without necessarily knowing every detail
- 2:27of its source, used insights it provided during
- 2:30major Cold War moments, including tensions surrounding
- 2:34Soviet relations with China and internal Kremlin
- 2:37succession struggles. Maintaining the operation
- 2:49for so long required extraordinary discipline.
- 2:53Both brothers lived for decades with the constant
- 2:56risk that a single mistake, a slip in front of
- 3:00the wrong person, an inconsistency in their travel
- 3:03could expose them to Soviet or American Communist
- 3:06Party counterintelligence, either of which could
- 3:09have meant serious consequences. Morris Childs
- 3:13continued traveling and reporting well into his
- 3:1670s. suffering health problems that he and his
- 3:19FBI handlers had to carefully manage without
- 3:22raising suspicion about his frequent trips and
- 3:26long absences. The operation was so tightly compartmentalized
- 3:33within the FBI itself that only a small number
- 3:37of officials ever knew its full scope, a secrecy
- 3:41that helped it survive decades of American Communist
- 3:45Party leadership changes and Soviet counterintelligence
- 3:48efforts without detection. Act 4, a secret kept
- 3:55until the end. Operation Solo finally wound down
- 4:02in the early 1980s as the Childs brothers aged
- 4:06out of active service. Morris Childs died in
- 4:091991, Jack Childs some years earlier, both largely
- 4:13unknown to the public they had quietly served
- 4:15for decades. Morris Childs was posthumously awarded
- 4:19the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1987 by
- 4:22President Reagan in a ceremony that because the
- 4:25operation's details remained classified gave
- 4:29the public no real sense of what the honor was
- 4:32actually for operation solos full scope only
- 4:38became widely known after later declassification
- 4:42and it stands as one of the clearest illustrations
- 4:45of cold war counterintelligence success measured
- 4:49not in dramatic arrests but in decades of quiet
- 4:52disciplined unglamorous access that most spy
- 4:56fiction never bothers to imagine. This concludes
