- 0:46Speaker 2: It and welcome back inside the locker room from Latrobe.
- 0:53Speaker 2: As the training camp has ended. The rain is now come.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Hang on a second, Sun just came out again.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Sun pop back. I mean, greatness kind of went. I
- 1:02Speaker 3: don't know if that's coming towards us or away from us.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I can't tell.
- 1:06Speaker 2: So Max, we were, uh, we were talking about training
- 1:10Speaker 2: camp and kind of getting to that position where you're
- 1:13Speaker 2: going to where you're going to, you know, sort of
- 1:16Speaker 2: get ready for an opponent, and we're going to talk
- 1:21Speaker 2: a little bit about what Mike McCarthy's looking for and
- 1:23Speaker 2: a little bit about the players you're looking to step forward.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I did want to take a moment to talk about
- 1:28Speaker 2: the Jets only because I think it's it's like an.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Opponent a little bit, a little bit.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Like an apartment, because you're game planning to try to
- 1:37Speaker 2: get ready for him. As I look at this Jets team,
- 1:40Speaker 2: it looks to me and I am you know, I'm
- 1:44Speaker 2: not in the meeting rooms with the Jets that kind
- 1:46Speaker 2: of thing. Remember, they were supposed to have this good
- 1:48Speaker 2: defense and Aaron Glenn comes in and the defense had
- 1:52Speaker 2: kind of fallen apart the year before. Last year they
- 1:55Speaker 2: played the entire season. Yes, Max new exactly where I
- 1:59Speaker 2: was going. He just put together He wrapped his forefinger
- 2:03Speaker 2: around his thumb, putting up the universal sign for zero. Yes,
- 2:07Speaker 2: you know what, as you're noticingerotions zero interceptions zero They
- 2:12Speaker 2: didn't have a one interception under That is unbelievable.
- 2:18Speaker 3: For a guy who is not only a defensive coach,
- 2:20Speaker 3: but a defensive backs coach who had interceptions and understand
- 2:24Speaker 3: the boards of interceptions. For whatever reasons, commatically, they could
- 2:28Speaker 3: not get in a position to take the football away
- 2:31Speaker 3: in that respect.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, and so I think, and again I don't know
- 2:35Speaker 2: this for a fact, but I'm guessing that Aaron Glenn
- 2:37Speaker 2: came in and you know, look, I hope for his
- 2:40Speaker 2: sake he's got good, solid job security. Right, That's that's
- 2:43Speaker 2: what I'm hoping, because this is what it looked like
- 2:45Speaker 2: to me, like a coach comes in and says, Okay,
- 2:49Speaker 2: we'll do it your way. You got your players, let
- 2:51Speaker 2: me see what I can get out of them. And
- 2:53Speaker 2: then this year was like, Nope, I'm not running it
- 2:57Speaker 2: back with this group. So remember this was supposed to
- 2:59Speaker 2: be a Jets team that was built on defense. They
- 3:01Speaker 2: traded Sauce Gardner last year and.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Williams Quinn Williams, so the guy who would have probably
- 3:07Speaker 3: gotten you that said one interception was right away, so
- 3:11Speaker 3: for you not to get one, and then you look
- 3:12Speaker 3: at their defense and you know, will McDonald was the
- 3:15Speaker 3: guy they just drafted a couple of years ago as
- 3:19Speaker 3: a first round pick.
- 3:20Speaker 2: He is listed on their depth chart as a second
- 3:23Speaker 2: team guy. So they have along the defensive line David
- 3:28Speaker 2: Onyamana new guy to and Andre Sweat new guy. Trade
- 3:33Speaker 2: David Bailey first round pick new guy to Mario Davis.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Old new guy used to be there, he's back. Joseph
- 3:41Speaker 2: Asai remember him with the Bengals. New guy, nay Sean Wright.
- 3:44Speaker 2: There's your interceptions there. I think he had one against
- 3:47Speaker 2: the Steelers if not mistaken the pass up the left sideline.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Minka Fitzpatrick, new guy, di'angelo.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Pond's new guy might be might be Jarvis Brownlee at
- 3:58Speaker 2: that starting position. And then some of the other guys
- 4:01Speaker 2: are old new guys like Harrison Phillips, Brendan Stevens from Baltimore.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Oh, Harrison from Minnesota. Okay, so or Buffalo. He was
- 4:09Speaker 3: at both of them.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Where was he last year? I thought he was with Minnesota.
- 4:12Speaker 3: He was at Minnesota last year, Yes, right, because he
- 4:14Speaker 3: was what Buffalo to start his career, went to Minnesota.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Now he's there. Yeah.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So eight nine ten new guys on defense, and we
- 4:25Speaker 2: have seen the Steelers try to get some new guys
- 4:29Speaker 2: on defense. And by the way, for the for the
- 4:33Speaker 2: people who are thinking, you know, we really ought to
- 4:36Speaker 2: rip this team down and you know, tear it down
- 4:39Speaker 2: to the studs.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Down to the studs, that's what this looks like.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you get a veteran like Gino Smith at quarterback,
- 4:46Speaker 2: and you get eight or nine new starters on defense,
- 4:49Speaker 2: and you have three or four new starters on offense,
- 4:52Speaker 2: and no idea where it's going to go, and no
- 4:55Speaker 2: idea if you're going to be able to draft the
- 4:57Speaker 2: right pieces and get the right pieces in place. But
- 4:59Speaker 2: I do you think, my guess when you when you
- 5:02Speaker 2: look at these kind of players, like a Demario Davis
- 5:05Speaker 2: for example, that that's the kind of veteran guy that
- 5:11Speaker 2: you want to bring in and set the attitude that
- 5:15Speaker 2: you want. I don't see any possible way you can
- 5:19Speaker 2: bring in eight free agents and have a top tier defense,
- 5:23Speaker 2: right Like, I can't imagine they can look at this
- 5:27Speaker 2: team and they've got talent. It definitely has talent. Guy,
- 5:30Speaker 2: there's talent on the team. But I can't imagine they
- 5:33Speaker 2: can look at this team and be like, we're good.
- 5:35Speaker 2: We made all these changes, now we're fine. I'm guessing
- 5:38Speaker 2: that yes, they expect to make an improvement, but they're
- 5:41Speaker 2: also trying to set a tone, set an attitude for
- 5:46Speaker 2: an Aaron glenn Era that just wasn't part of their
- 5:49Speaker 2: team last year. That's not the kind of defense he
- 5:51Speaker 2: wants and so I think he wants to again do
- 5:54Speaker 2: I know this? Am I sitting in their meeting rooms? No,
- 5:57Speaker 2: as an observer, I'm looking at these players and these
- 6:00Speaker 2: names and these type of guys. Mika Fitzpatrick who we
- 6:03Speaker 2: know about you know, to Andre Sweat. They want hard working,
- 6:09Speaker 2: ernest give you everything you have, no bs kind.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Of players physical to physical, that's physical. There's a there's
- 6:18Speaker 3: a certain trend with all those guys that they're trying
- 6:21Speaker 3: to get physical up front. And you know Aaron Glenn
- 6:26Speaker 3: that had offload two of what the consider they're premier
- 6:29Speaker 3: players on that team because they knew it was they
- 6:32Speaker 3: were not gonna be able to utilize the value right
- 6:34Speaker 3: of those guys right now. So that's why you got
- 6:37Speaker 3: to let those guys go get some compensation.
- 6:40Speaker 4: This is no, this is no slight on Sauce Gardner
- 6:44Speaker 4: and Quinn Williams.
- 6:44Speaker 3: No, they're fantastic for the guys you want when you
- 6:47Speaker 3: get good.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Yes, you can't keep them now because you're not gonna
- 6:50Speaker 2: get good unless you trade them and get a whole
- 6:53Speaker 2: bunch of new guys in.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Here, and then you have to pay a whole lot
- 6:55Speaker 3: of money the next time around, right because by the
- 6:57Speaker 3: time they're good, those guys will be up on their contract, right,
- 7:00Speaker 3: so it's like, not let him go and let's just
- 7:03Speaker 3: build this up from the beginning. Like you said, eight
- 7:05Speaker 3: nine guys you're bringing in that fit the mold, that
- 7:08Speaker 3: don't necessarily break the bank right now, so you can
- 7:11Speaker 3: get your system and your culture established.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Culture that's the word. Yeah, I didn't use that word.
- 7:17Speaker 2: That's exactly I get the sense they're doing a culture
- 7:19Speaker 2: reset here.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Yeah, they are. I completely agree with you, and you've
- 7:22Speaker 3: got to start at the foundation, and no better way
- 7:25Speaker 3: than to bring in guys that don't cost as much,
- 7:28Speaker 3: but you know what you're getting as far as their
- 7:30Speaker 3: personality and what they bring to the table.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Yeah, and then you know, again they're trying to build
- 7:36Speaker 2: that you know, that sort of mauling lineup front up
- 7:39Speaker 2: front of Fashana left tackle. We'll see, but Membuh is
- 7:43Speaker 2: a guy that is appears to be an ascending young
- 7:47Speaker 2: the Ulli white tackle. I'm sure they would have loved
- 7:50Speaker 2: to kept Elijah Vera Tucker, but you know, he's had
- 7:52Speaker 2: some health issues. I get the sense that, you know,
- 7:56Speaker 2: we went into last year's game against the Jets thinking,
- 8:00Speaker 2: you know this is gonna be uh to use Abby
- 8:04Speaker 2: Christian's band name, Fist Fighting the parking Lot. Yeah, but
- 8:07Speaker 2: one of the one of the great names for a band.
- 8:10Speaker 3: By the way, I I mean, there's nothing leaves zero
- 8:14Speaker 3: to the a on.
- 8:15Speaker 2: The DV morning show her group. So you know, look,
- 8:20Speaker 2: I think that I think that they're trying to and
- 8:24Speaker 2: it wasn't that. It wasn't that way at all. It
- 8:25Speaker 2: was a high scoring game.
- 8:26Speaker 3: High scoring.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Now a lot of that was because the Jets ran
- 8:29Speaker 2: the ball right down this year this stroas, So I think.
- 8:32Speaker 3: That all over the place.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're looking.
- 8:35Speaker 2: For a little okay, how do we stack up in
- 8:38Speaker 2: the trenches kind of game, I think that this is
- 8:42Speaker 2: a This is a good test for the Steelers front.
- 8:45Speaker 2: This both fronts, the offensive front and the defensive front.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Max.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I think this will be you know, you're going to
- 8:51Speaker 2: get effort, attitude, and some talent from this Jets team
- 8:54Speaker 2: up front.
- 8:55Speaker 3: To run or not to run? That is the question
- 8:58Speaker 3: and the answer huh to run? Yeah, Well the answer
- 9:02Speaker 3: can they run? Can they defend?
- 9:04Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 9:06Speaker 3: Both of those need to be answered, and both of
- 9:08Speaker 3: those are the questions.
- 9:10Speaker 2: So yeah, and appropriate for this conversation because William Shakespeare.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Bill, of course, was the first ever Billy Shakespeare.
- 9:18Speaker 4: First ever player drafted in Steelish history.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Bill Shakespeare didn't sign with the team, oh, the first
- 9:23Speaker 2: ever NFL draft.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Yet, Bill Shakespeare.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Didn't sign with He wouldn't have fit in here, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 2: so so you know, yeah, of course. Maybe the most
- 9:33Speaker 2: famous line in Shakespeare history is to be or not
- 9:35Speaker 2: to be? That's the question, right, Uh huh, Well, if
- 9:38Speaker 2: you're in Pittsburgh, it's not to be because they just
- 9:40Speaker 2: dropped the verb to you know, the car needs washed.
- 9:43Speaker 2: You know, the law needs mode and a lot of
- 9:45Speaker 2: other places. The car needs to be washed, the law
- 9:47Speaker 2: needs to be. So if William Shakespeare he brought up
- 9:51Speaker 2: that question Pittsburgh, yeah, well it's not to be of course,
- 9:55Speaker 2: were said, we don't need that's not a question.
- 9:57Speaker 4: We know the answer.
- 9:58Speaker 3: We don't the answer, and yeah, why do we need
- 10:01Speaker 3: to add the extra words?
- 10:01Speaker 2: A lot of shakes, Max, Max bringing the Shakespeare a
- 10:04Speaker 2: lot of Shakespeare ties here to pitch.
- 10:07Speaker 4: I do think that.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I think it's it's just gonna be a fun game
- 10:11Speaker 2: to see what happens up front.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Max, It's gonna be a fun game. I think in
- 10:16Speaker 3: general to see how this team responds from one week
- 10:19Speaker 3: to the next. Where's a growth, right, That's what I'm
- 10:21Speaker 3: looking for. I want to see can you be as good,
- 10:25Speaker 3: if not better the next time we take the field
- 10:28Speaker 3: at after sure? Can you get four plays better from
- 10:33Speaker 3: the previous game? Can you get eight more plays of
- 10:36Speaker 3: opportunity more this game because of what you did from
- 10:40Speaker 3: the first game and what were you going to do
- 10:42Speaker 3: with those things? Comes down to that run game. For
- 10:45Speaker 3: the offensive line, are you going to figure out how
- 10:48Speaker 3: to how to plug up the black side weakside a
- 10:50Speaker 3: gap block? Are you gonna not give up sacks right defensively?
- 10:56Speaker 3: Are you gonna keep getting knocked back and creating holes
- 10:58Speaker 3: up the middle? Or are you gonna attack the guy
- 11:00Speaker 3: downhill and push and create a new line of scrimmage.
- 11:03Speaker 3: That's what I want to see. Safeties, excellent job. Keep
- 11:06Speaker 3: doing what you're doing. You know they when they spill,
- 11:09Speaker 3: you fill when there's an alleyway opportunity. Don't turn down.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Where's the opportunity across the middle of the field. Make
- 11:15Speaker 3: a play on the ball. Corners, play inside out right,
- 11:20Speaker 3: don't get any holding penalties. Play your game tight ends,
- 11:25Speaker 3: catch the ball middle of the field, is now open
- 11:27Speaker 3: for business. So if you have a shot, you get open.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Be ready, young guys, next man up. It's not just
- 11:34Speaker 3: about DK Michael Pittman. We have other spots to fill.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Who is going to take not be given? Who's going
- 11:41Speaker 3: to take a spot? Jerrem g Bernard's trying to take
- 11:44Speaker 3: a spot. Max Earlerman's trying to take a spot. Kten
- 11:48Speaker 3: Wegen is trying to learn and take a spot because
- 11:51Speaker 3: he knows that he needs to be more valuable than
- 11:53Speaker 3: just a kick returner. So a lot of different storylines.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I'm just excited about what the growth looks like from
- 11:58Speaker 3: one game to the next.
- 11:59Speaker 2: And so yes, we're gonna and we're gonna get some
- 12:02Speaker 2: of the specific players in a moment. But let's hear
- 12:05Speaker 2: from Mike McCarthy from this morning, because he was asked
- 12:07Speaker 2: that question, what kind of steps?
- 12:09Speaker 4: This is a general broad UH, you know, sort of
- 12:13Speaker 4: a broad view of what he expects and hopes for
- 12:17Speaker 4: UH and his team going from preseason game number one
- 12:20Speaker 4: to preseason game number two.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Take a step, you know, clearly, you know there'll be
- 12:28Speaker 5: a message I did you know. I'll wait to all
- 12:31Speaker 5: the informations. In Wednesday's practice, this was supposed to be.
- 12:34Speaker 5: This was an important practice, This was a practice I
- 12:36Speaker 5: was looking forward to today. Uh, yesterday was our last
- 12:38Speaker 5: install practice, our mental evaluation MS and m AS was
- 12:43Speaker 5: the lowest of the training camp. So you know, we're
- 12:44Speaker 5: making progress. I felt really good coming off the field yesterday.
- 12:48Speaker 5: The intensities was where it needed to be. So you know,
- 12:52Speaker 5: I just want to you know, get that, you know,
- 12:55Speaker 5: get that that work on Wednesday in the can and
- 12:58Speaker 5: and then I'll make it clear with you know, with
- 12:59Speaker 5: the next step is that that we're looking to take
- 13:02Speaker 5: as a football team. So we talked about establishing the
- 13:05Speaker 5: play style, you know, the Steelerway, and you know it's
- 13:08Speaker 5: been in been in place here since the seventies, you know,
- 13:11Speaker 5: so I thought our guys you know, took that to
- 13:13Speaker 5: the field last week, and but now we need more
- 13:17Speaker 5: discipline with it. So I mean, that will definitely be
- 13:19Speaker 5: part of the message. You know, we had to you
- 13:21Speaker 5: know that many you know personal files, you can't win
- 13:24Speaker 5: you can't win to you know, you can't win a
- 13:25Speaker 5: game with that meant with that type of performance in
- 13:29Speaker 5: the area of penalties, so you know that, So that'll
- 13:31Speaker 5: be part of the message as we go into game Friday.
- 13:34Speaker 3: More.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, he called the amount of penalties outrageous during yesterday
- 13:40Speaker 2: yesterday's press conference, that that's generally what they're going to
- 13:45Speaker 2: try to do. How about specific players and who needs
- 13:47Speaker 2: to step up for the Steelers. That's what we're going
- 13:49Speaker 2: to discuss next when we continue in the locker room
- 13:51Speaker 2: here on the Steelers Audio Network.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Any player would you know benefit from this type of atmosphere?
- 13:58Speaker 4: Last one? How Hi also mitigating.
- 14:04Speaker 5: You know, necessary coach it.
- 14:07Speaker 4: It's part of practice ethic. We have.
- 14:09Speaker 5: We have a video that's Joe Witz and my assistant
- 14:12Speaker 5: head coach does a tremendous job. You know, I've given
- 14:15Speaker 5: Joe some of the head coach responsibilities that I've done
- 14:18Speaker 5: in the past. He doesn't. He does an incredible job
- 14:21Speaker 5: with it.

- 15:16Speaker 2: locker room here on this Sather's Audio Network. And Max,
- 15:21Speaker 2: what I'm going to say here at the beginning, I'm
- 15:22Speaker 2: gonna start with what I considered the low hanging fruit
- 15:25Speaker 2: last week as we were getting ready for the game,
- 15:27Speaker 2: and so we kind of concluded with it and had
- 15:29Speaker 2: a good long talk about the young.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Quarterbacks out there.
- 15:33Speaker 2: However, I want to start with this because again I
- 15:37Speaker 2: don't know whether Aaron Rodgers is gonna play. I don't
- 15:39Speaker 2: know how much Macy Rudolph's gonna play if he plays.
- 15:42Speaker 2: It is clear that they want to get Will Howard
- 15:44Speaker 2: and Drew Aller a lot of work. I thought both
- 15:46Speaker 2: guys looked really good last week, and I'm starting to
- 15:49Speaker 2: think something that Mike McCarthy was asked about. He was asked,
- 15:54Speaker 2: can you keep four quarterbacks? Yeah, we keep four quarterbacks,
- 15:57Speaker 2: and I think a lot of people, a lot of
- 16:00Speaker 2: observers maybe rolled their eyes a little bit at that comment.
- 16:04Speaker 2: You know, it's hard to keep four quarterbacks some teams,
- 16:07Speaker 2: for while, we're keeping only two.
- 16:08Speaker 4: With one in the practice squad.
- 16:10Speaker 2: And the more this goes on, Max, the more I think,
- 16:13Speaker 2: if these guys have another game on Friday night against
- 16:17Speaker 2: the Jets like they just had, I think this too,
- 16:20Speaker 2: those are going to keep four quarterbacks?
- 16:22Speaker 4: I really do.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'm right there with you because you
- 16:27Speaker 3: got apples apples comparisons, and both these guys came and
- 16:31Speaker 3: showed a resolve, showed an understanding and a mastery of
- 16:35Speaker 3: the offense to get things done. Now this week will
- 16:38Speaker 3: be different, right, because it's more of a game plan.
- 16:40Speaker 3: How do you respond to that? You know, you have
- 16:43Speaker 3: to think if you're a backup quarterback, young quarterback in
- 16:47Speaker 3: the system, you have to be able to operate Aaron
- 16:50Speaker 3: Rodgers centric offense. Right, this is geared around Aaron Rodgers
- 16:56Speaker 3: skill sets. So how well do you process and do
- 16:59Speaker 3: with that? And then can you go out there and perform?
- 17:02Speaker 3: And if you can, you know, we've seen two minute
- 17:05Speaker 3: drill execution, We've seen end of game decision making second
- 17:11Speaker 3: half play by Drew Aller. Now you wonder, okay, maybe
- 17:14Speaker 3: this week does Drew Allig get bumped up so he
- 17:17Speaker 3: gets a guaranteed two minute drill and a gotta have
- 17:20Speaker 3: a situation, and then we'll get some majority of those
- 17:23Speaker 3: reps in the second half against the Jets, just to
- 17:25Speaker 3: balance it out. I don't know, I don't know how
- 17:28Speaker 3: they're going to disseminate it. But you also want to see, Okay,
- 17:31Speaker 3: Drew did really well against that talent JV level talent, right, right,
- 17:38Speaker 3: how do you do with the varsity? Two way guys,
- 17:41Speaker 3: they get bumped up from JV to varsity all the time.
- 17:44Speaker 3: That's the next phase, because you're not going to get
- 17:46Speaker 3: the varsity reps because those are a reserve for Air
- 17:48Speaker 3: Rodgers and Mason Rudolph. Right, But in that third preseason game,
- 17:52Speaker 3: you might you might get some varsity reps because if
- 17:55Speaker 3: you say, I've seen enough for Mason and when we
- 17:57Speaker 3: know what Aaron is, all right, young guys, y'all, I'll
- 18:00Speaker 3: get one half one half each, go out there and
- 18:03Speaker 3: show me that you want to that you that you
- 18:05Speaker 3: want it.
- 18:06Speaker 2: It's an interesting dilemma, and again maybe it's helped by Actually,
- 18:12Speaker 2: I think it is helped by how good you think
- 18:14Speaker 2: your practice squad is going to be, because if you
- 18:16Speaker 2: keep four quarterbacks, you are going to be short somewhere
- 18:20Speaker 2: on your depth chart offense or defense. That's right, and
- 18:23Speaker 2: so it's gonna have to be. And again, when Mike
- 18:25Speaker 2: McCarthy talks about, hey man, I need a guy who
- 18:29Speaker 2: can contribute, we talked about this.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Do you keep a guy just for special teams?
- 18:36Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy seemed to say no a couple of mornings
- 18:39Speaker 2: go during one of his press coverages.
- 18:41Speaker 4: No, you don't.
- 18:41Speaker 2: I want these guys to be able to contribute. It's
- 18:43Speaker 2: something that you and I kicked around at the beginning
- 18:45Speaker 2: of camp because we just don't know what is roster
- 18:47Speaker 2: construction is going to look like. And you know, for example,
- 18:50Speaker 2: Miles Killerbrew, right, Miles Killerbrew is kept for special teams.
- 18:54Speaker 2: He was an All Pro special teamer and that's why
- 18:57Speaker 2: he's done. Yeah, and so look, and again I'm not,
- 19:02Speaker 2: you know, breaking any new ground here, I'm just telling
- 19:04Speaker 2: you this is what happened. When other safeties got hurt.
- 19:08Speaker 2: They elevated guys from the practice squad. They didn't put
- 19:11Speaker 2: Miles out there at the safety position. You know, they
- 19:15Speaker 2: viewed him as a guy who made the roster as
- 19:18Speaker 2: a special teamer and that was valued, and he was
- 19:20Speaker 2: an all pro. I think it's gonna be okay, you
- 19:25Speaker 2: can do this and also play special teams and not
- 19:28Speaker 2: that it's an afterthought, but it's just you better be
- 19:31Speaker 2: versatile enough to help. So maybe that mitigates a little
- 19:35Speaker 2: bit of a roster crunch problem by keeping four quarterbacks.
- 19:40Speaker 2: But what it does mean is somebody's gonna be edged off,
- 19:43Speaker 2: and so these position battles that we've talked about is
- 19:46Speaker 2: now a plus one. There's gonna be one more position
- 19:49Speaker 2: battle out there. Yeah, you know on Friday night and
- 19:52Speaker 2: then the following Thursday night in Buffalo.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Yeah, and you better prove that you can do everything.
- 19:59Speaker 3: You can sweep while mopping while also doing the windows
- 20:02Speaker 3: and the dishes, right, you know, you're gonna have to
- 20:05Speaker 3: be multifaceted to make this team. And I think that's why.
- 20:09Speaker 3: And we saw that with Kayden wegen right, putting them
- 20:12Speaker 3: out there and having run routes move around in the offense.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Can you be a competent receiver for us? Not just
- 20:18Speaker 3: a putt and kick return specialist? Eli Heydenreich. Can you
- 20:22Speaker 3: do more than just be a guy that's on special
- 20:25Speaker 3: teams because we need more than that. Travis Homer personal protector,
- 20:31Speaker 3: also got a lot of rest with Mason Rudolph. Can
- 20:35Speaker 3: you take the number three running back role and be
- 20:38Speaker 3: the third down, third option back for us? So there's
- 20:41Speaker 3: a lot lot of green grass and opportunity for guys
- 20:45Speaker 3: on the football field.
- 20:45Speaker 2: And it's interesting that Mike McCarthy calls it four down.
- 20:49Speaker 2: I want a four down player now. I wonder if
- 20:51Speaker 2: he's saying that advisingly, meaning the fourth down could be
- 20:54Speaker 2: special teams.
- 20:54Speaker 4: You know that's the fourth whatever it is.
- 20:57Speaker 3: On fourth down, you should be able to be an option.
- 21:00Speaker 2: So you know, one of the guys and it's just
- 21:02Speaker 2: based on based on what we saw. So okay, let
- 21:06Speaker 2: me take a half step backward. What you're hoping for,
- 21:09Speaker 2: I think is if you're a guy who looks down
- 21:11Speaker 2: at the depth chart and sees that you are, you know,
- 21:14Speaker 2: way over on that you know, the third or fourth
- 21:16Speaker 2: group on the right where you don't want to be.
- 21:19Speaker 2: He were trying to move up to that second group
- 21:21Speaker 2: because now you've got a chance to make the team.
- 21:23Speaker 2: You do wonder if guys like and I don't know
- 21:26Speaker 2: whose expenses would come at maybe you just rest somebody,
- 21:29Speaker 2: but guys like Anthony Goodlow and Kyler Ball. We talked
- 21:32Speaker 2: about on the defensive line, will they now have an
- 21:35Speaker 2: opportunity Max to move up and get more of those.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Two AA reps?
- 21:41Speaker 2: And I and another guy that I'm going to bring
- 21:42Speaker 2: up because Mike McCarthy mentioned his name. Now, whether this
- 21:46Speaker 2: means he's impressed or whether he's just running through the
- 21:51Speaker 2: roster in his mind, I don't know, But he was
- 21:54Speaker 2: talked about, Hey, you know who's kind of taken advantage
- 21:57Speaker 2: of their opportunities. You know, have some of the young
- 22:01Speaker 2: defensive backs taking advantage of their opportunity with some of
- 22:04Speaker 2: the guys here, well he went over to the offense
- 22:05Speaker 2: or if he was asked about you know, I'm sure
- 22:07Speaker 2: he was asked about the wide receiver position because there
- 22:09Speaker 2: hasn't been Pittman and Metcalf. Yeah, and he said, yep,
- 22:13Speaker 2: Jeremy Roman Max yeah yeah.
- 22:18Speaker 3: And I was like, in the next enter him, uh
- 22:20Speaker 3: huh and he can return.
- 22:22Speaker 2: So right, So now all of a sudden, that feels
- 22:27Speaker 2: like game on right Like now again, I don't want
- 22:30Speaker 2: to read too much into it. Uh, but it felt
- 22:32Speaker 2: like if the coach means is your name, that that's
- 22:36Speaker 2: probably a good thing.
- 22:37Speaker 3: You pop, especially in that context.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:39Speaker 3: I think the biggest thing is the context that it
- 22:41Speaker 3: comes under, like, hey, because these guys are out, who
- 22:44Speaker 3: got the opportunities? And when you automatically think boom boom boom,
- 22:48Speaker 3: it's like these guys stood out. This wasn't like, whoa,
- 22:52Speaker 3: we're trying to get some guys and you know, we're
- 22:54Speaker 3: just trying to get more out of them. Right then
- 22:56Speaker 3: you kind of just leave like a blanket group statement.
- 22:59Speaker 3: He was like, nope, Jermy Roman Max all of them
- 23:03Speaker 3: and did not mention Cayden Legion, did not mention Brandon Smith. Well,
- 23:06Speaker 3: I also thought had a good game.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Yeah, well he mentioned Kayden Legion and said he has
- 23:11Speaker 4: to clean up some stuff.
- 23:12Speaker 3: That's right, Yeah it was. It was He's like, yeah,
- 23:14Speaker 3: he had to catch a run, he's got to clean
- 23:16Speaker 3: up some stuff.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, so I think you know, again, uh
- 23:21Speaker 2: is this sometimes? And Mike Tomlin brought up a guy
- 23:24Speaker 2: you understood that you trying to push that guy's buttons, right,
- 23:27Speaker 2: And I don't know what this means.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Uh?
- 23:30Speaker 2: So again I I we're all new to this. But
- 23:34Speaker 2: to Kayden, Legion's got to clean up some stuff. But
- 23:36Speaker 2: I mean he's still the return man right now. But
- 23:38Speaker 2: the fact that Max Hurlman got mentioned and you start
- 23:41Speaker 2: to think, okay, well, you know, you know DK is
- 23:46Speaker 2: going to make the team. You know Pittman's going to
- 23:48Speaker 2: make the teams too, you know Jeremy Bernard's going to
- 23:50Speaker 2: make the team. Now you've got Roman Wilson who's having
- 23:53Speaker 2: a really good care. You got Ben Scarnik five, and
- 23:57Speaker 2: then you have Legion and Hurleman, Brad Smith. That's an
- 24:03Speaker 2: interesting position to be, Max, And whether you can slide
- 24:07Speaker 2: a guy onto a practice squad who then becomes a
- 24:11Speaker 2: guy who steps up and helps you, or whether you
- 24:14Speaker 2: risk losing that guy. But I'm gonna be taking a
- 24:16Speaker 2: good long look. He's one of the guys now. All
- 24:20Speaker 2: of a sudden popped up boom, Max Turlman's on my
- 24:23Speaker 2: radar to see see what he does on Friday night.
- 24:25Speaker 3: And game tape matters, like, it's not just about what
- 24:29Speaker 3: happens on the football practice field. It's about what do
- 24:32Speaker 3: you deliver when the lights go on? What do you
- 24:35Speaker 3: deliver when the fans show up? At the stadium and
- 24:37Speaker 3: it counts. Can I depend on you? Can you become
- 24:40Speaker 3: something more than what we think you are as a
- 24:45Speaker 3: practice player, And that's what we thought about Jeremy Binard.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Like watching Jerremy Bnar play versus watching me hear win
- 24:50Speaker 3: our practice are too many are two different things. Because
- 24:54Speaker 3: he can't show off his physicality out here, that's right,
- 24:57Speaker 3: he can't. He can't break a tackle because there's no tackling,
- 25:00Speaker 3: So his value comes in watching him play in live
- 25:03Speaker 3: stadium events. And Max Hurlman, we know he's fast, we
- 25:08Speaker 3: know he has a skill set, but we didn't know
- 25:10Speaker 3: he was that fast. The penalties that he was drawn
- 25:13Speaker 3: down field, that was moving the chains for the offense.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Like that's a real tangible stat when you're getting thirty
- 25:19Speaker 3: you know, twenty five thirty five yards a clip on
- 25:22Speaker 3: a penalty. That's that's field flipping type of stuff like
- 25:26Speaker 3: what Calvin Austin used to do. And you're like, okay,
- 25:29Speaker 3: well if that's something that you can work into, Like, hey,
- 25:31Speaker 3: he's going to draw penalties because of his speed, and
- 25:34Speaker 3: he's also a returner. He's gonna turn some heads.
- 25:37Speaker 4: It's making thing twice yep.
- 25:38Speaker 2: And when I look at the tight end situation, it
- 25:40Speaker 2: looks to me, you know, we're assuming, I'm assuming they're
- 25:43Speaker 2: gonna keep three.
- 25:45Speaker 4: It looks to me like that Nail.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Is pretty much driven in a couple more donks in
- 25:49Speaker 2: the hammer from Robert Tunyan and that he might not
- 25:52Speaker 2: even need to get He might already.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Be on the team. I think Robert Tity's on the team. Okay,
- 25:56Speaker 3: So after the two minute drill, it's like going into
- 25:58Speaker 3: halftime like, hey, Bud, don't worry about it. You're good.
- 26:01Speaker 4: You're just going to take the pads off.
- 26:04Speaker 3: We'll see you week one.
- 26:05Speaker 2: And Riley Nowakowski, you know, at the full back position.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Was interesting to see them in there in play number one,
- 26:11Speaker 2: and they've been talking about how good he is on
- 26:13Speaker 2: special teams.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Uh so that leads us. And we've talked about the
- 26:17Speaker 4: quarterback position. That leads us.
- 26:18Speaker 2: As we talk about the offense, did anybody else well
- 26:21Speaker 2: you mentioned Brandon.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Smith, Brandon Smith and Hurlman.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Yeah, those receivers that that showed me something that I
- 26:27Speaker 3: was like, oh I was anticipating this. It was it
- 26:30Speaker 3: was outside with my expectation level.
- 26:32Speaker 2: What did you see from the offensive line? What do
- 26:35Speaker 2: you want to see this week.
- 26:37Speaker 3: From the offensive line, backside cutoffs, okay, create the lanes
- 26:41Speaker 3: for the running backs to run and let them get
- 26:44Speaker 3: to the second level cleanly. That's the one thing I
- 26:47Speaker 3: didn't see. I didn't see clean second level opportunities for
- 26:52Speaker 3: the running backs. So that's what I want to see.
- 26:54Speaker 3: The offensive line get better at pass protection as well.
- 26:59Speaker 3: You know, don't want to see the sacks. Hate seeing
- 27:01Speaker 3: the sacks. Give your quarterback time and give him at
- 27:04Speaker 3: least two point three to two point five seconds before
- 27:06Speaker 3: the guy gets there. Don't just turn them loose. I
- 27:11Speaker 3: would love to see Maxian on sure, but I don't
- 27:12Speaker 3: think we're gonna see him. We don't see him in
- 27:15Speaker 3: practice on Wednesday. I don't expect see him on Friday.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Door was left slightly Ajar Mike McCarthy said, probably not,
- 27:22Speaker 2: but we'll see what happens over the next forty eight hours.
- 27:25Speaker 2: If he's in practice, he's got an opportunity. And that's
- 27:28Speaker 2: a shame for Max because he was really having it.
- 27:31Speaker 2: It appeared from my eyes, Max that he was having
- 27:34Speaker 2: a really solid camp. And now you're pursing your lips.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Max. Yeah, person, Yeah, yeah, I know, because I'm trying
- 27:43Speaker 3: to take in the information and think about this because
- 27:45Speaker 3: I thought it was good, but it wasn't enough. And
- 27:48Speaker 3: that's where I teeter with, if you're going to put
- 27:55Speaker 3: this challenge out here, I want to see more movement
- 27:58Speaker 3: at the right tackle position, because Dylan Cook and Spencer
- 28:02Speaker 3: Anderson played well into the third quarter in that first
- 28:04Speaker 3: preseason game right and we heard this as a competition.
- 28:06Speaker 3: We heard Broderick Jones gonna be involved Projerck played primarily
- 28:09Speaker 3: left tackle, and then Jack driscoll went in at right tackle,
- 28:12Speaker 3: and then after Jack Driskell, that's when Broderick got moved
- 28:15Speaker 3: over to the right. Doug Nester, who's a tackle, played primarily
- 28:17Speaker 3: left guard, and then you saw Brock Coffin, Ryan McCollum,
- 28:20Speaker 3: Jennings dunker at the right guard positions. Jenning's been at
- 28:23Speaker 3: left almost all camp until this game. So that's where
- 28:28Speaker 3: I'm like, I get you trying to create these combinations,
- 28:31Speaker 3: but if you're really competing for who could start for
- 28:34Speaker 3: you at right tackle, I should have saw Broderick Jones
- 28:37Speaker 3: there after Dylan Cook because Maxianachuur is not available, and
- 28:43Speaker 3: see if that's the competition now, because I think you're
- 28:47Speaker 3: settled in on Troy and Mason being on your left
- 28:51Speaker 3: side and going Zach. Zach is literally the center of
- 28:55Speaker 3: it all. And so yeah, so it's just I would
- 28:57Speaker 3: have loved to see things a little bit different. Configuration one.
- 29:00Speaker 2: I think it's tough for Maxahonachur. Now he's missed one game,
- 29:05Speaker 2: he's missed a week or eight days of practice, eight
- 29:09Speaker 2: practice days, right, Yeah, it looks like he's probably going
- 29:12Speaker 2: to miss another game.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Very very tough.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I know you have I know you have a game,
- 29:17Speaker 2: one last game, and hopefully you can get in there,
- 29:19Speaker 2: and then you have quite a bit of practice time
- 29:22Speaker 2: leading up to the opener, which which is a little different.
- 29:26Speaker 4: Than in your day.
- 29:26Speaker 2: If I'm not mistaken, he had that fourth game and
- 29:29Speaker 2: a little less time in preparation for the regular season.
- 29:33Speaker 2: I mean, is that enough time to get a rookie
- 29:35Speaker 2: up to snuff.
- 29:36Speaker 3: He needs contact and he needs competitive reps. That's why
- 29:41Speaker 3: the preseason is so valuable, because you're getting competitive reps
- 29:45Speaker 3: to get you ready. And even if you stuck him
- 29:48Speaker 3: in and played him the whole third preseason game, I
- 29:52Speaker 3: hate to say it, but it's not gonna be NFL talent.
- 29:54Speaker 4: The whole game, right, So it might not be any
- 29:56Speaker 4: of the game.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, you know what I'm saying. So you're not
- 29:59Speaker 3: really getting ready for what the NFL Week one talent's
- 30:05Speaker 3: going to look like. So do you risk putting him
- 30:10Speaker 3: out there too soon? And you can't pull back once
- 30:13Speaker 3: you open Pandora's box of a first round or starting,
- 30:16Speaker 3: you can't pull that back and you can ruin them right.
- 30:20Speaker 3: You can only make a first impression once. And so
- 30:24Speaker 3: if it's me, I'm like, I'm gonna wait a couple
- 30:26Speaker 3: of weeks. I'm gona figure it out. But let me
- 30:28Speaker 3: figure out between Dylan Cook and Broderick Jones, because Roderick,
- 30:33Speaker 3: one of those guys is gonna be your swing. Right
- 30:35Speaker 3: of the two, one of them is gonna be the swing.
- 30:37Speaker 3: So let me figure out because Max is just the
- 30:39Speaker 3: right tackle. Is that the biggest battle that remains in
- 30:41Speaker 3: the offensive line? I think is there a battle for
- 30:43Speaker 3: right guard? I think there still is, but I think
- 30:46Speaker 3: Spencer Anderson's kind of paced himself away. I think he's
- 30:52Speaker 3: that's where the battle is still going.
- 30:53Speaker 2: So keep an eye on Max, sort keep an eye
- 30:55Speaker 2: in the quarterbacks. Of course, all that just quickly. It'll
- 31:01Speaker 2: be interesting to me to see if there's any different
- 31:04Speaker 2: rotation at the running back position. Correct, and if Jalen
- 31:08Speaker 2: and Rico Dowdle are playing, that is going to cut
- 31:11Speaker 2: into reps further down the line. I was quite surprised
- 31:15Speaker 2: to see Caleb Johnson, I don't believe entered the game until.
- 31:18Speaker 3: The fourth quarter. He did not. Yes, that surprised me,
- 31:21Speaker 3: and only two rushes.
- 31:23Speaker 4: Yes, that surprised me.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Yeah, so well, surprising but also telling.
- 31:28Speaker 4: Yes, exactly exactly.
- 31:30Speaker 2: So I think in a there are certain guys and
- 31:34Speaker 2: we're gonna get some mon defense. There's certain guys where
- 31:36Speaker 2: I'm interested to see Mac Turlman, Does Caleb Johnson, Max
- 31:41Speaker 2: Turleman because what he showed Caleb Johnson because he's a
- 31:43Speaker 2: third round pick, Broderick Jones. Does some of these guys
- 31:48Speaker 2: just get in a little sooner than they did last week?
- 31:51Speaker 2: And will that be telling? So those are the positions,
- 31:54Speaker 2: and again, of course the quarterback position, we understand that.
- 31:57Speaker 3: So I think that's it, but it's more of a
- 31:59Speaker 3: few your position, Yes, that's right, but it's.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Exactly it's the quarterback. We're all gonna be watching it.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Everyone's gonna be making proclamations on X and all this
- 32:11Speaker 2: other stuff. But I think for me, does Max Hurtleman
- 32:15Speaker 2: ascend a little bit more? What's going on at right tackle?
- 32:19Speaker 2: And is the running back rotation going to remain the same.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Those are the three things I'm looking.
- 32:24Speaker 3: For on offense. Yeah, third running back and that fifth
- 32:27Speaker 3: sixth receiver is gonna be very very interesting.
- 32:30Speaker 4: Okay, And you're throwing Brandon Smith in there as well.
- 32:32Speaker 3: I'm throwing Brandon Smith. Okay, I thought because I thought
- 32:34Speaker 3: there was a lot of trust. He gets a lot
- 32:35Speaker 3: of balls, He gets a lot of volume out here,
- 32:37Speaker 3: and he got a lot of volume in the game
- 32:38Speaker 3: on Thursday night.
- 32:39Speaker 4: Okay, we're gonna look at the defense as we continue this.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Yearers getting ready for a very important preseason game number
- 32:45Speaker 4: two against the Jets when we continue in the locker room.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Here on the Steelers Audio Network.

- 33:54Speaker 4: I have it's on backward.
- 33:55Speaker 3: It's all right, It's fine. I mean, yeah, it's radio.
- 33:59Speaker 4: It's radio.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Long as you can talk. That's the most important thing.
- 34:02Speaker 3: That muffling sound you hear is definitely Rob moving the
- 34:06Speaker 3: headset around. But Rob, you missed something yesterday, and I
- 34:14Speaker 3: felt appropriate, since we're here at this very special time,
- 34:19Speaker 3: it might be time for the bell lap.
- 34:22Speaker 4: Dake it best, dang it?
- 34:25Speaker 3: I thought Justin was on top of that. We did
- 34:26Speaker 3: the bell lap yesterday?
- 34:27Speaker 4: Did we did? How about the how about the trope?
- 34:30Speaker 4: Five hundred?
- 34:33Speaker 3: There?
- 34:34Speaker 4: We got the troll five of the show.
- 34:36Speaker 3: It's the end of the show. Thing the end of
- 34:38Speaker 3: the show. And also we're like a day early from
- 34:40Speaker 3: what we thought.
- 34:40Speaker 4: It was going to be.
- 34:41Speaker 2: But it's got to be cued up because it's over. Yeah,
- 34:44Speaker 2: it's the end of it, and it's and it's a
- 34:45Speaker 2: locker room tradition.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Yeah, we must, we must play the Matthew McConaughey to
- 34:50Speaker 3: end it.
- 34:50Speaker 4: You are the keeper of the flame.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Yes, got to you got to that is that is
- 34:54Speaker 3: a tradition. That that will that will go time eternal
- 34:58Speaker 3: for us here. So we'll get to the end of
- 35:01Speaker 3: the show and then we will outro that.
- 35:03Speaker 2: How about we out I'm very poor about remembering that
- 35:06Speaker 2: kind of thing.
- 35:07Speaker 4: So is that better?
- 35:09Speaker 3: Yes, it's the pointed it's the pointed one. It's just
- 35:14Speaker 3: it doesn't carry as much.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Okay, defense, I gotta tell you first guy I'm looking
- 35:21Speaker 2: at on defense number one guy Gabriel Rubio.
- 35:26Speaker 3: He was our camp sleeper when when we were doing
- 35:29Speaker 3: our Campy Awards, just because nobody knew about him.
- 35:36Speaker 2: When he got drafted, there were the people on TV
- 35:39Speaker 2: were like, I got nothing. Yeah, he played for Notre
- 35:42Speaker 2: Dame and he got hurt and didn't play towards the
- 35:44Speaker 2: end of the season.
- 35:44Speaker 4: People like, I don't know, think about it.
- 35:46Speaker 3: They don't even have a stock photo of him.
- 35:47Speaker 4: How about that? Isn't that crazy?
- 35:49Speaker 3: That's ridiculous, didn't get invited to the combine out of
- 35:53Speaker 3: one hundred and twenty possible interior defensive lineman just came
- 35:58Speaker 3: out of nowhere. But you knew there was something there.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Steelers scouts looked at him, Jim Ward and company looked
- 36:05Speaker 3: at him, and they found him. Hey day three, sixth
- 36:11Speaker 3: round passion pick. Those are passion picks for the for
- 36:14Speaker 3: the scouts, and you you stumped for him, And man,
- 36:19Speaker 3: did he look good. He looked like a guy that belonged.
- 36:23Speaker 3: And he looked like a guy that played varsity and
- 36:26Speaker 3: got demoted to JV out of spite so he could
- 36:29Speaker 3: get some reps. And with pissed off, he was on
- 36:32Speaker 3: JV and just started beating everybody up.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Analogy to me, I mean, you know, look, I thought, again,
- 36:40Speaker 2: we'll kyler ball move up a little bit, get some
- 36:44Speaker 2: reps closer to the beginning of the game than the
- 36:46Speaker 2: end of the game. Anthony Goodlow was a guy I
- 36:48Speaker 2: think we both thought looked pretty good. Does he have
- 36:50Speaker 2: an opportunity to get some snaps closer to the game
- 36:53Speaker 2: the beginning of the game then the end of the game,
- 36:56Speaker 2: you know, And I don't know whether I don't know
- 36:58Speaker 2: whether coaches at this point, I think and and player
- 37:03Speaker 2: personnel people think, and I'm not using these guys in specific,
- 37:07Speaker 2: but since we're talking about them, Hey, listen, you know
- 37:10Speaker 2: here the six or seven guys that we really think
- 37:13Speaker 2: are battling for.
- 37:14Speaker 4: Six says You told me whoa you know? Did Lowry?
- 37:19Speaker 4: You know Logan the obviously he's hurt Rubio the other guys.
- 37:23Speaker 4: We don't want them to look.
- 37:25Speaker 2: Too good because we want to stop making plays.
- 37:30Speaker 4: They're not going to be.
- 37:31Speaker 2: They're not going to make our six but we wanted
- 37:33Speaker 2: to make our They're not going to make our fifty.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Three, seven and eight part of our sixth. Oh heck yeah,
- 37:40Speaker 3: I believe that happens. Listen, this is all a game
- 37:42Speaker 3: of chess. Everybody's trying to play the shell game. Everybody's
- 37:46Speaker 3: trying to play the shell game, and they don't want
- 37:49Speaker 3: anything that could take away from their leverage position. And
- 37:53Speaker 3: especially when it's a guy that you brought into camp.
- 37:56Speaker 3: You don't want another team poaching your quote unquote your stock. Right,
- 38:01Speaker 3: It's like it's like when the It's like when the
- 38:02Speaker 3: coyote was like when a coyote or a wolf gets it,
- 38:04Speaker 3: gets it gets in the sheep into that open area.
- 38:07Speaker 3: You don't want that wolf coming in and just culling
- 38:10Speaker 3: half your stock.
- 38:11Speaker 2: And then it takes a good scout. But again, these
- 38:16Speaker 2: guys already are familiar with these players. It's not like
- 38:19Speaker 2: they're turning on you know, let's say.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Gave Ruby apparently.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right, that's a good point. But I mean,
- 38:25Speaker 4: now the guy you've probably get hit it had he
- 38:27Speaker 4: not done so well, you scouts knew him.
- 38:29Speaker 2: But I'm just saying, like, at the end of the game,
- 38:31Speaker 2: you know, it's not like, hey, who's just it's not
- 38:34Speaker 2: like they're up there, you know, uh, you know, Andy
- 38:37Speaker 2: Wide and Omar and looking at these guys and be like, hey,
- 38:39Speaker 2: who's number seventy four for the Jets. They know who
- 38:42Speaker 2: he is, right, yeah, And they may see something that
- 38:44Speaker 2: sparks a memory or it's a continuous.
- 38:47Speaker 3: And that's another thing process, Yeah, because they've also scouted
- 38:50Speaker 3: these guys when they were draft picks, and maybe there
- 38:52Speaker 3: was a guy that they wanted they couldn't get two, three,
- 38:56Speaker 3: four years ago, and now that guy comes around it
- 38:58Speaker 3: you remember that guy and you're like, I'm gonna take
- 39:01Speaker 3: a swing at this guy because this is a guy
- 39:03Speaker 3: I wanted before, so you So yeah, the scouting process
- 39:07Speaker 3: never stopped, especially when you have the consistency of scouts,
- 39:12Speaker 3: meaning tenuere serve consecutively for an organization. You get that overlap, right,
- 39:17Speaker 3: you get that opportunity to say, man, here's our even
- 39:20Speaker 3: like Jalen Ramsey was one of the classic examples that
- 39:24Speaker 3: they scouted him. Man, they wanted him back in the day,
- 39:26Speaker 3: but he just he was gonna go too high. I mean,
- 39:28Speaker 3: he was the number he was the number one safety
- 39:30Speaker 3: at number one quarter on the board, and it was
- 39:33Speaker 3: it was a Travis Hunter like situation, except for on
- 39:35Speaker 3: the same side of the ball.
- 39:36Speaker 4: So yes.
- 39:38Speaker 2: And in case you want to get too fancy, right, yeah,
- 39:42Speaker 2: So I think when a guy's just simply too good,
- 39:45Speaker 2: improving himself too much, you can't do it right. So
- 39:49Speaker 2: a different sport, but a classic example of a team
- 39:52Speaker 2: trying to get cute to Brooklyn Dodgers at an outfit.
- 39:55Speaker 4: They're like, well, just full hide this guy nobody nobody,
- 39:58Speaker 4: and the.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Pirates are like, we'll take him. Roberto Clemente.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Yeah, time, you don't want to be making that Roberto
- 40:06Speaker 4: Clemente personnel mistake. No, hey, we're really clever. We're gonna
- 40:10Speaker 4: hide this guy somebody else.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Somebody else grabs him, and next thing you know, he's
- 40:14Speaker 2: got a yellowjacket.
- 40:15Speaker 4: He's making his speech and can't.
- 40:16Speaker 3: I can't do that. Bring it over here, okay, so quickly.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Then again I can't. I don't know as there's anybody
- 40:26Speaker 2: else the guys we talked about. For obvious reasons, I'm
- 40:31Speaker 2: gonna skip to the secondary Robert Spears Jennings. I think
- 40:34Speaker 2: we both love what we saw there. Let's see some
- 40:36Speaker 2: more as he tries to solidify a spot. Yeah, he's
- 40:40Speaker 2: in a roster back.
- 40:41Speaker 3: He's trying to make that second wave of guys, trying
- 40:43Speaker 3: to be on the second, second level team, that third
- 40:45Speaker 3: and fourth safety.
- 40:46Speaker 2: I think he's probably I think Daleen Everett is going
- 40:49Speaker 2: to make the team, you know, third round pick, a corner,
- 40:51Speaker 2: Robert Spears Jennings. When you get drafted further down, it's
- 40:53Speaker 2: a little bit of a harbor climb. So I'm gonna
- 40:55Speaker 2: put him in the same category as Gabe Rubio as
- 41:00Speaker 2: draft picks from this year. Later draft picks, it's it's,
- 41:06Speaker 2: you know, they've got to fight to make the team.
- 41:09Speaker 2: You know, if you're a you know, nobody wants to
- 41:12Speaker 2: have a bad day, and they'll get on you if
- 41:13Speaker 2: they do. But if you're a high draft pick and
- 41:15Speaker 2: you okay, But if you're further down, every everything is.
- 41:19Speaker 4: Magnified every thing.
- 41:21Speaker 2: So those are the two guys I think I'm most
- 41:24Speaker 2: looking at it defense, and then I really want to
- 41:27Speaker 2: see where Landon Roberts slots in at the inside linebacker.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Is gonna be the most intriguing of the linebackers because
- 41:34Speaker 3: you know, Carson Brunner's slated and Cole Cole Holcomb are
- 41:38Speaker 3: both your second team linebackers. Does e rob move one
- 41:41Speaker 3: of those guys out or and who yeah? And who
- 41:44Speaker 3: of those guys? And if not, if he's on the
- 41:47Speaker 3: third level, well then I'll tell you something as well.
- 41:51Speaker 3: So it's gonna be very interesting to see where he lands.
- 41:53Speaker 3: But I also another guy, Rayshawn Jenkins. Throw him in there.
- 41:56Speaker 3: I thought he's a safety positions in the safety position
- 41:58Speaker 3: and is he mccuambo he had those Even though he
- 42:01Speaker 3: had those, uh those two penalties, dude got a sack,
- 42:05Speaker 3: blisted off the edge, filled in the hole, and made
- 42:08Speaker 3: some plays in the run game on the outside zone.
- 42:11Speaker 4: Got one more for you, Jamie Davis.
- 42:14Speaker 3: Oh, yep, I really, I'm real number fifty seven, Jam Davis.
- 42:19Speaker 4: I am really really intrigued to see if he's a
- 42:24Speaker 4: guy that moves up in the rotation, and if he
- 42:27Speaker 4: does move up at the rotation at who's expense.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Well, there's only one guy. The other three aren't moving, right, Yeah,
- 42:33Speaker 3: so yeah, yeah, there's only one place he could go
- 42:37Speaker 3: if he is going to move up.
- 42:38Speaker 2: I think it's and again, you know, look, we don't
- 42:43Speaker 2: know what the internal evaluations are that that might be
- 42:46Speaker 2: a position where And again I'm just throwing it out
- 42:48Speaker 2: there because these are the kind of discussions that are
- 42:50Speaker 2: no doubt happening as we speak. We got to keep five,
- 42:54Speaker 2: We got it, We just have to. Okay, well, then
- 42:57Speaker 2: that means somebody else is losing a position.
- 43:00Speaker 3: You cut, who are you cutting?
- 43:01Speaker 4: That's right?
- 43:02Speaker 3: Were you cutting?
- 43:02Speaker 4: You keep four quarterbacks, somebody's gone, You keep five outside linebackers,
- 43:07Speaker 4: somebody's gone.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Somebody's gone. And that's where it gets really tough, because
- 43:12Speaker 3: now it's say we don't keep if you keep the
- 43:15Speaker 3: fifth linebacker, say you may not have four safeties, right,
- 43:22Speaker 3: that's right if you keep because you know, and here's
- 43:25Speaker 3: another reason why, Because now you can.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Say, all right, well we have a for safety. It's
- 43:29Speaker 2: Jalen Ramsey. If we need to move them back there,
- 43:32Speaker 2: we know we can do a fine job back there.
- 43:34Speaker 2: So that's how we're going to parse it together. And
- 43:36Speaker 2: by the way, if you're on the team.
- 43:37Speaker 4: You know that right exactly. Yeah, you want to make
- 43:40Speaker 4: sure that you're not the guy who gets bumped.
- 43:42Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't want to be the fringe guy, right,
- 43:44Speaker 3: you don't want to be the line of demarcation.
- 43:46Speaker 2: But hey, the good news is you're force safety. The
- 43:49Speaker 2: bad news is we're only carrying freely.
- 43:52Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 43:52Speaker 2: That's that's not what you want to hear. So some
- 43:55Speaker 2: intriguing battles. Can't wait, my friend, See, the camp is over,
- 43:59Speaker 2: but the shows continue on because it is time for
- 44:02Speaker 2: the drive. Our good friends Wes Euler and Matt Williams
- 44:05Speaker 2: that are going to take over from here.
- 44:07Speaker 4: For Max Starks, see you on Friday night, my friend,
- 44:10Speaker 4: see you Friday.
- 44:11Speaker 2: I'm Rob King, And for Justin Miller, I'm sorry, but.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Hey, all right, all right, all right.
- 44:23Speaker 3: You cole man.
- 44:26Speaker 4: Dark your and there we have it, the official end
- 44:36Speaker 4: to our stay in La Trob for Justin Miller, for
- 44:39Speaker 4: Max Starks. I'm Rob King. We thank you for listening
- 44:42Speaker 4: in the locker room here on this year there's Audio
