- 0:00It was pretty full on weekend for me.
- 0:01I learnt a lot. I got involved in seven crashes
- 0:05and only one was my fault really.
- 0:07But yeah, I just, I tried to like analyse everyone and you
- 0:11know, all the six that I got involved in, I couldn't figure
- 0:15out a way I could have done things different, you know, it's
- 0:17it's just this style of that racing and something I have to
- 0:20accept. You got to run the risk of
- 0:22getting that good result, but you're probably going to get
- 0:25into a crash and it's a amazing mindset to go racing with
- 0:29something I've never had to do before, going to a race thinking
- 0:32you know it's 5050 whether you'll crash or you won't, So
- 0:35it's it's pretty different. Going into Daytona, did you have
- 0:38certain ideas of what you thought was what it was going to
- 0:40be like? And then did those preconceived
- 0:43notions change at all? Not really.
- 0:46I try never to have any expectations.
- 0:48I did as much study as I could, got a lot of advice from good
- 0:51people. But until you feel when you're
- 0:54out there and you know it's, you're going like 3 seconds a
- 0:57lap faster when you're in the pack.
- 0:58And when you're the 4th or 5th car, there's just no air and
- 1:02you're sliding around like crazy.
- 1:03It's like drifting into the corners at 300, it's or 180,
- 1:07whatever it is in your language. But it's yeah, it's a it's a
- 1:11it's a crazy feeling. And until you feel it, you you
- 1:13don't really know. And obviously Daytona and Lynn
- 1:16are are. Different.
- 1:17But there are some similarities. So what did you feel like you
- 1:20learned from Daytona that you can apply this weekend?
- 1:24Just knowing how to place the car to get air on it, to change
- 1:27the balance and grip and how to stay in line.
- 1:30And then you know, learning the proximity of the car to the wall
- 1:33on the right side. It took me a while to know where
- 1:36the right side of the car was. Just learning the width of the
- 1:38car. I hadn't really driven around
- 1:40people. We did some single file stuff in
- 1:43practice, but no double file. So I was always a bit, a bit,
- 1:48you know, given a little bit too much space than I should have
- 1:50early on. And that cost me at the start.
- 1:52I was following AJ and my teammate and I just kept pulling
- 1:55out a line, which sent us backwards, So I got better at
- 1:58that. But at the end my car was a bit
- 2:00too beat up to do much with it. Bon Parker's Fox Sports F2.
- 2:03First off, like so was last weekend.
- 2:04Fun. One of the races was, the other
- 2:08wasn't. And have you been keeping up
- 2:12with Supercars at all? Have you watched anything yet
- 2:15from Bathurst? Will you?
- 2:16Or are you trying to make a clean break from it?
- 2:19No, I watched it. Like, I got a lot of friends,
- 2:22drivers and team people, and I watched practice one that was on
- 2:25at a decent hour, and it was a weird feeling, like it's been 17
- 2:30years of driving outfit Lane with all those people.
- 2:32So yeah, it was, it was shame to miss it.
- 2:35But I guess, you know, I had fun.
- 2:37I feel like I belong here. I feel like I've definitely done
- 2:39the right thing for my career and racing enjoyment, so I'm
- 2:43not. I'm not missing it, I don't feel
- 2:46like. Let's go to Kelly Crandall and
- 2:48then Dustin Long. Kelly Crandall, racer.com Shane
- 2:54it's a small sample size, but between Daytona last weekend and
- 2:59then the events you ran last year, you were also a spectator
- 3:01some weekends last year. What's been the take away so far
- 3:06of just the atmosphere in the garages and being here in NASCAR
- 3:09and maybe have I'm hoping you felt you have felt welcome in
- 3:12the garages. Yeah, it's been awesome.
- 3:14All the teams are awesome. The people and the fans as well
- 3:17are really cool. It's been great to see that
- 3:20response. But yeah, this style of weekend
- 3:23is different. I never really go to a track on
- 3:25a Friday morning, qualify, and then you know, race tomorrow and
- 3:28home that night. Like normally our weeks have
- 3:31been five or six days, so it's a big change for me doing these
- 3:34short weekends, but it's it's pretty cool.
- 3:37I like the routine of it. You know, we got home Monday, 2
- 3:40days at home and all three days and then come to a race again.
- 3:43It's it's a cool routine to be part of and hopefully I feel
- 3:47like that in 30 weeks from now. Go ahead.
- 3:52Let me follow up on that because it's short weekends, but as you
- 3:54said, it's going to be a longer year than I believe you've
- 3:57you've done with with racing like a longer season.
- 4:01Not really. Like our our season is longer
- 4:04but less races. We normally end up finishing in
- 4:07December. OK.
- 4:08So it's going to be more back-to-back weekends as?
- 4:10Yeah, for sure. Have you thought much about that
- 4:13and just maybe anything you have to do differently to just keep
- 4:16yourself physically and mentally in this every weekend?
- 4:21I don't know. I don't try not to get too deep
- 4:22about it. I love racing, you know, and the
- 4:24routine of it. Soon as you know, Daytona was
- 4:28over. I was already watching these
- 4:29races on boards, trying to study and trying to get as much as I
- 4:32could from the engineering group at Caulig to prepare me for
- 4:36this. Yeah, I I love racing, so
- 4:39hopefully, well, it shouldn't wear me out, yeah.
- 4:42Let's go to Dustin Long. Dustin Long, NBC Sports.
- 4:48Shane, you mentioned being involved in seven crashes last
- 4:51weekend. Normally for you, is that the
- 4:54equivalent of a a seasons worth or two seasons worth from what
- 4:58you I mean give me a sense of what how long would it take for
- 5:01you to be involved in seven crashes in a in a normal year
- 5:04for you? I think I had two or three last
- 5:07year, like it's crazy. And then our cars last year
- 5:11especially were just made out of glass.
- 5:12Like I thought my race was over, especially in Xfinity.
- 5:15I got out at the end and I expected it to be ruined and it
- 5:19wasn't too bad, you know, the suspension was banned and the
- 5:22fenders were pushed in, but it didn't look as bad as I thought,
- 5:25like the cars are are so tough here.
- 5:27It's pretty impressive what they can take and.
- 5:31What is that you mentioned earlier, just the different
- 5:34mindset how what is it like to have that mindset, that idea
- 5:38because obviously when what you raised that was never much of A
- 5:41thought and it has to be a little bit more of a thought.
- 5:45You see the the highlights of some of the big hits knowing
- 5:49you're going to do that or that could be, I mean that could be
- 5:52your situation. How how do you shape your mind
- 5:54for something like that? Yeah, not only that, but also
- 5:57the results as well. I think I've read a stat
- 6:00somewhere that there's only five guys with a top ten finishing
- 6:03rate of 50% of or better. So I used to go to a track and
- 6:07if you weren't top three on the weekend, it's a disaster.
- 6:10So having that results mindset has been a huge switch as well.
- 6:13So being a part of a rookie makes accepting that easier.
- 6:17And I just got to settle in and you know, shoot for top
- 6:20fifteens, then top 10s, try and get some consistency.
- 6:23But yeah, when you look at even the top guys results last year,
- 6:26they're all over the place week to week.
- 6:28It's yeah, it's very different, you know, different way to
- 6:32approach races. And one last thing is obviously
- 6:35Daytona, Daytona 500, that's the the biggest event for the stock
- 6:38car series. You know, you somebody coming
- 6:42over and so there was a new experience.
- 6:45You know, the sport's growing trying to reach more
- 6:48international superstars to come over, potentially come over for
- 6:51the Daytona 500. How do you talk to anybody that
- 6:55would be of interest in it? Because I'm sure that they would
- 6:58their first thought would be why do I want to grace in this
- 7:01because I got a 50% chance of of crashing.
- 7:04How, how do you, how might you talk somebody through, you know,
- 7:07another international superstar like yourself?
- 7:10Yeah, I don't know if I tell them to come and do that event
- 7:13for the first one but it's definitely a cool experience for
- 7:16me to be a spectator and you know the pre race show, seeing
- 7:20the stands full on a Monday as well like it was, it was pretty
- 7:23awesome to be a part of and to watch.
- 7:24But yeah as an outsider to come in and just jump straight into
- 7:28that race it would be super difficult to to perform well you
- 7:32know compared to like the street circuit was for me.
- 7:35So yeah, I don't. I don't know if I'd advise
- 7:38someone to come and do that for their one off.
- 7:41Let's go to Chris Knight. Nightcatchpence.com Shane, I
- 7:46know that you only got 4 good laps in during the ARCA race on
- 7:49on was that Friday night, so will you return to the series
- 7:54and is it a possibility that we could see you do triple duty at
- 7:56Talladega to get some more drafting experience?
- 7:58I got my license now, so hopefully not.
- 8:03So you don't have any ARCA, Other ARCA races on your
- 8:05Schedule I? Don't know, like the car was fun
- 8:08and the team was fun, but when the race started, like I'd never
- 8:12done, you know, gone too wide before and my spotter was
- 8:16awesome and he was pushing me more than I wanted to to start
- 8:20with. But it was good.
- 8:22We needed to clear some people. So the first lap I was three
- 8:25wide on the tribal, shitting myself.
- 8:28And then I got around, got around 1:00 and 2:00 and cleared
- 8:32everyone and man, that was awesome.
- 8:34And then I just seen everyone swapping lanes and I was too far
- 8:38ahead. Like I think we already got into
- 8:39the top 20. So I couldn't really get out at
- 8:41that point. And then, yeah, it was just
- 8:44mayhem. The rest of the race just
- 8:45lapping. I just stayed well off the back
- 8:47of the pack and still got involved in stuff.
- 8:50It was it was carnage, but ticked it off.
- 8:54We'll go to Deb Williams and then Lee Spencer.
- 8:58Deb Williams Auto Week You mentioned about having to adjust
- 9:02to racing around the cars. You did a lot of work on the
- 9:05SIM, So what was the big difference that you noticed from
- 9:10what you worked with the SIM to actual race?
- 9:15Well, just on SIM, you don't really do the Super Speedway
- 9:17stuff, but just feeling what the air does to cars.
- 9:20And that's unfortunately I spun a guy out, he was passing me at
- 9:24a speed and I went to slot in line and I didn't realize how
- 9:27much the side draft would slow him up.
- 9:29So like, he was passing me pretty quick and as soon as I
- 9:32got beside him, he, it was like he let off the throttle and I
- 9:35just got his rear bumper, like that kind of stuff you don't
- 9:38learn until you feel it. So unfortunately it was at his
- 9:41expense, but now I kind of know what things do, but it's crazy
- 9:46at the speed how much the air affects the car.
- 9:49So I'm sure it's going to be like that here tenfold, you
- 9:52know, into a corner with more radius.
- 9:54Yeah. Lee Spencer.
- 10:01After your comment earlier to Chris, you might want to look
- 10:03into a depends sponsorship. I'm just thinking.
- 10:07What's? That a depends sponsorship.
- 10:09They're adult diapers. But anyway, just kind of
- 10:14curious, have you found that your fan base from New Zealand
- 10:18and perhaps Australia have followed you over here at all?
- 10:22Yeah, it's been pretty cool seeing how how excited everyone
- 10:25was for it and it became available on TV now in New
- 10:28Zealand, so it's cool everyone watching that.
- 10:30And yeah, like the interest has been pretty surprising.
- 10:34And yeah, pretty, pretty cool feeling actually.
- 10:37To have so many people follow me over and all the news sites over
- 10:41there following each race, it's yeah, it's really cool to see.
- 10:44And what do you, what have you found to do for fun?
- 10:46Cuz I mean New Zealand has incredible golf courses and
- 10:50beaches and climbing, you know, hiking, all kinds of different
- 10:53things. What are you doing here to kind
- 10:55of relax, have fun? Not much.
- 10:58It's been mainly just all racing stuff.
- 10:59But yeah, found a few good woods, trails to run around with
- 11:02the dog and girlfriend, stuff like that.
- 11:04It's been been pretty cool. It's a nice area where we are in
- 11:07in Mooresville, pretty relaxed and close to everything, which
- 11:10is good. So I've been enjoying it so far.
- 11:14Are there any final questions for Shane?
- 11:16We'll go back up to Bob Hackers. I know you did the one race at
- 11:25IRP, but was that the most racing you'd ever done at night
- 11:28and was that any different for you?
- 11:30No, I'd done the Rolex and Le Mond 24 before, so done a fair
- 11:34bit of racing at night, but I'd never started one like last
- 11:37Friday at 11 or whatever that was, yeah.
