- 0:05Hour number two, Millery Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:08Network. Bottom of the hour, Scott, Dr.
- 0:10Man, he was a Kinnock in the press box for Hoosiers.
- 0:14Hawkeyes. We'll get his thoughts, get his
- 0:16thoughts on the Big 10 as well. That was column today at the
- 0:19athletic trends plays, I beg your pardon?
- 0:21Trends off today, Mr. Monday nights, you got a double dip.
- 0:24We'll hear from him coming up here at about 10 minutes before
- 0:27too. But the music means it's time to
- 0:28recap the week with her buddy Bama.
- 0:30Bob, another great weekend of college football.
- 0:33Boy, Proctor almost got one in the end zone.
- 0:35Rumbling, bumbling, stumbling. That 10 yards, all that poor
- 0:39safety that came up to thought, yeah, I'm gonna just, you know
- 0:41what? I'm just gonna hit the ground.
- 0:42And that was a good business decision.
- 0:44Slim down to 359. Yeah, slim and trim and just
- 0:49just left it all out there. Hello, Bama.
- 0:51How are you? Trenton, Ken, Good to talk to
- 0:53you. I'm doing great boys.
- 0:55I'd like to play that intro song again please, if we could.
- 0:58You like it, huh? Yeah, well, I mean, just
- 1:02certainly the best win. I think they've had under 4.
- 1:04I know whom, when we get to him and yeah, Proctor, I mean,
- 1:08listen, I've been on him, I've been critical.
- 1:11I think some of that's been, most of it's been justified.
- 1:14But he has dropped. He's dropped weight.
- 1:17He looks better. And that was by far, and I'm not
- 1:19just talking about the bubble straight to him, but that was by
- 1:23far his best game since he's been in Alabama.
- 1:28And it was the best game that Alabama has played under Devore.
- 1:32That said, if Diego Pasta comes in and and wins Saturday, we'll
- 1:36start. We'll start calculating buyouts
- 1:38again, kind of how it goes. I love with college sports.
- 1:42All right, let's let's start with the the Big 12 because I
- 1:46thought it was really pretty entertaining weekend.
- 1:48Even Houston's win in overtime was was entertaining.
- 1:52Trent, where do you want to go? We've talked about obviously
- 1:54Iowa State that started at their most complete game.
- 1:57I thought of the year Arizona State, TCU, maybe TCU let it
- 2:01slip away. Their thoughts?
- 2:03You know, takeaways on Friday night, too, Houston, I mean,
- 2:07survival mode survived exactly in overtime against Oregon
- 2:11State. Stayed up way too late watching
- 2:12that one. Who?
- 2:13Is winless this year, we remind everybody.
- 2:15That's a bad team. Now, one thing that I warned
- 2:18about last week after the big Utah Texas Tech game is not to
- 2:23overrate what we just saw in the fourth quarter.
- 2:25Look at the totality that you do.
- 2:27The Utah defense is still going to be good.
- 2:29Utah's still going to be a good team.
- 2:31And don't throw dirt on them to go on the road.
- 2:33Long road trip after that. Devastate.
- 2:35And just completely, I understand West Virginia's got
- 2:38quarterback injuries. They're not very good still, I
- 2:40thought that was eye opening. Don't say that Utah is dead
- 2:44because I think that might be. And we know Willingham's teams,
- 2:46they're going to get better throughout the course of the
- 2:48season. Yeah.
- 2:49Your thoughts on the Big 12 Baba?
- 2:51I thought the game Friday night was tremendous.
- 2:53Arizona State, TCU, I just think look, I mean those are two we
- 3:00talked about it. We talked about it all year.
- 3:02I still think this is a this conference is up for grabs.
- 3:05I've no clue who's going to I don't know who the best team is.
- 3:07Iowa State. I agree with you.
- 3:09I mean, I'm sure you all talked about that a lot.
- 3:11Tremendous win, right? I went out of a buy over
- 3:13Arizona. I just think I didn't see much
- 3:16of it, but I just think it is a that's one of those games and
- 3:20that's I think Iowa State's program is the point now.
- 3:23OK, if you they should expect to win conference home games.
- 3:28I think Matt Campbell has got them.
- 3:29Yeah. I don't care who the opponent
- 3:31is. Maybe it helps a little if you
- 3:33want that Oklahoma, Texas are not there, although I think they
- 3:36they give those 2/5 anyway. And so, yeah, I think they're in
- 3:40the mix again. It's a great job by him.
- 3:42I thought again, Arizona TCU was just a fantastic game.
- 3:45I think TCU mover couple of uncharacteristic throws, 2
- 3:51really good quarterbacks. I don't know who the best team
- 3:53in that conference is. I totally agree.
- 3:55Which rent on Utah. Let's not overreact to the Texas
- 3:58Tech game. They're they're winning him.
- 4:01One thing we know they're not going to quit.
- 4:04I think they're going to be there at the end.
- 4:06Texas Tech, I think in a five week this week, I didn't see
- 4:08their game. BYUBYU goes into Colorado and I
- 4:12give Colorado credit again, tough loss for them at home.
- 4:16They're playing hard. I I didn't know what they were
- 4:18going to be this year without Tudor and and Justin Hunter, but
- 4:23here, here they are. Travis.
- 4:25Yeah, Travis. Sorry, Justin, that Cubs on the
- 4:28mind, but yeah, it's just Kansas.
- 4:32I guess we're off that train now, Trent.
- 4:34No, I'm not. I'm not.
- 4:36I'm still aboard. Yeah, that was a tough game.
- 4:40Yeah, it was a good game. What I still think we've said it
- 4:44all year, this, this conference is up for grabs.
- 4:46I don't think you are. You've got a few teams that you
- 4:49might want to separate. But Arizona State, we said they
- 4:52were going to have something to say and they did Friday night
- 4:56there. That's just going to be, it's
- 4:57going to go down to the very end and I think we're going to get
- 4:59tiebreakers we've never seen in this conference.
- 5:02Yeah, I think you're right. Daniels was really good.
- 5:04Cincinnati, Kansas was the entertaining football game.
- 5:07That's where I spent. Kansas defense stakes, though,
- 5:09They do. They're not even a contender to
- 5:11get to a title game. No, they can obviously upset
- 5:14almost anybody because of that offense.
- 5:16Can they win eight games, 7-8? Maybe Seals that's.
- 5:19Probably about the right. Yeah, I think it is too.
- 5:20All right, Charlie, let's get to the Big 10 with you.
- 5:22I thought there was a terrific day in that conference, in
- 5:24particular for Rd. teams. So we have to talk about game
- 5:30James again, coming up short. It was all there.
- 5:34This was an incredibly young, young Oregon team quarterback
- 5:38making a first start like this. Yeah.
- 5:40And Dante. Is more that one of the Heisman
- 5:42maybe? Oh, absolutely favorite.
- 5:44Yeah, he's he's definitely up there.
- 5:45And you couple it with he's draft eligible.
- 5:49It's just wild, yes, but with the red shirt here in there,
- 5:51here at UCLA and here he is looking at the highest level.
- 5:55Dan Lanning, an absolute star in this sport, being able to do
- 5:59what he did and to do that in its environment.
- 6:01But. 3/3 after 30 minutes. 17 three it it felt like it's over
- 6:06and then it was over. Here comes Penn State had no
- 6:09business winning that football game and they had an
- 6:12opportunity, but they can't do it again.
- 6:15Feels like another year. He can't get it done.
- 6:17And Bama, is there a parachute for him at a place like a
- 6:21Florida? Is there a parachute where he
- 6:24can pull the Steve Alford, get out before the posse gets him,
- 6:27Take a job, take a good job, but get out.
- 6:29Is there any opportunity maybe down in the South?
- 6:31And obviously the connections of Vandy when he was in the SEC and
- 6:34what he did with that program, has there been any talk about
- 6:37that down in the SEC territory? A little bit and I think I think
- 6:42there's something to it. I think he could land at a place
- 6:45like Florida and listen, we know what the problems are there with
- 6:50Napier and and what they've done now in year 4.
- 6:54Yeah, I think I think that's an excellent point.
- 6:56I think there is a landing spot at a place like that.
- 6:59I don't think there's going to be 1 at a school like an LSU or
- 7:03something. You know, if Kip and left Ole
- 7:06Miss, maybe, you know, that's one of those things that, you
- 7:10know, that maybe they would look to him.
- 7:11But I saw a great comment I thought on Twitter, and I don't
- 7:15know who it's from. I'd give him credit, but it
- 7:17says, you know, Penn State spends an awful lot of time in
- 7:20the top ten, never beating anybody in the top ten.
- 7:24You know, they're always ranked. They're always, you know,
- 7:26highly. I don't know what the record is
- 7:28now against top ten teams, but it's not very good.
- 7:31It's way under 500 and I think they lost that game in the first
- 7:36half like you talked about 33, right, that they should have
- 7:39been up at home against an inexperienced quarterback wide
- 7:43out prime time at night. You got to find a way to to if
- 7:47if your defense is only going to give up three points in the
- 7:49first half, you've got to find a way withdrew our and the 2
- 7:53running backs and everything else you've got at your
- 7:56disposable disposal. If you are James Franklin,
- 8:00you've got to put 1720 points on the board.
- 8:02So then that comeback when Oregon makes it, you know you're
- 8:06not playing catch up. I just think it was.
- 8:08But you're right, it's typical small games games.
- 8:12That's just what he's come to be.
- 8:14Another guy in that conference with an equally abysmal record
- 8:18is Lincoln Riley at USC. You just can't.
- 8:22Believe they lost that game. I.
- 8:26Somebody looked on the doorstep twice too.
- 8:27Yeah, it's. True, that's.
- 8:28True. Yeah, they did.
- 8:30I mean, it could have been a lot worse, but did I see empty seats
- 8:33in that stadium, by the way? And if that did, man, that is a
- 8:36terrible. Job.
- 8:37It's Illinois, Illinois. I mean, it's for my 45 years
- 8:40around. This is Illinois football.
- 8:42I mean, that's awful. But anyway, again and I listen,
- 8:46he was whining a little bit this week and I get I don't totally
- 8:51discount what he said at. 9:00 week.
- 8:54Last week they kick off at 8:00 LA time right in in the
- 8:58Coliseum, and then a week later they got to kick off at 9:00 AM.
- 9:01But that's the stupid conference that you play and.
- 9:03They were the ones that broke up the PAC 12, yeah.
- 9:06Exactly. They are the they were the lead
- 9:09dog getting out of that conference, right?
- 9:11And so this is what you're stuck with, boys.
- 9:14And maybe it wasn't Lincoln Riley's decision, maybe he was
- 9:16against it. I don't know.
- 9:17But you're going to have you're going to have games like this
- 9:20every single year because we all know that that the sport is
- 9:24beholden to television. And you're partnered with Fox
- 9:27and they've got a new kickoff game.
- 9:29And if here's a big game, guess what?
- 9:31If it's at Rutgers, you're going to play Rutgers at 9:00 in the
- 9:33morning. So get over it or how to deal
- 9:36with it. But on the field, that was,
- 9:39listen, I, I think, you know, Altmar, I thought played an
- 9:41excellent game. That was just a fun game to
- 9:43watch back and forth. But those two coaches, getting
- 9:47paid probably 20 million bucks between them, beat anybody in
- 9:54the top ten at a place like Penn State and USC.
- 9:57Iowa, man, gosh, I can't tell you how hard I was rooting for
- 10:00Iowa in that game. By the way, what was the spread
- 10:03in that? Because to that safety, was that
- 10:05a bad beat? It depends when you bet.
- 10:07Yeah, for the most part, though it was over a touchdown almost
- 10:09all. But if you bet the game earlier,
- 10:11it was, yeah. That was funny.
- 10:13Yeah, I just. I saw that and I'm like, wow,
- 10:15what's this boy? Now?
- 10:15If he had tripped, that'd have been something which.
- 10:18Was ridiculous, he said. He was in the end zone to begin
- 10:20with. Yeah, you know.
- 10:23I just don't know what was going on.
- 10:25Yeah, I was just crazy. But anyway, good.
- 10:29I agree with you. Good weekend in the Big 10.
- 10:31But the stories for me, Penn State and USC, big time teams,
- 10:35big time. Suppose that big time coach is
- 10:38making a lot of money, can't beat anybody ranked teams.
- 10:41Julian Sane had a nice game for Ohio State.
- 10:43Put that on his. Wife.
- 10:44Yes, he did. Well, I watched it, absolutely.
- 10:47Where to now? Let's go to the SEC CTC.
- 10:51Sam Pittman. Yeah.
- 10:53It's over. And he, you know what he did?
- 10:55This is the kind of guy he is. He negotiated the buyout down.
- 11:00He says, you know what? I don't need it all.
- 11:02Go get some players. Yep, just give me Then they go.
- 11:05I think it was like 60% of what he was owed.
- 11:07He he, he accepted he didn't need to do that.
- 11:10We'll, we'll let Bama tackle Alabama, Georgia once again, but
- 11:14Ole Miss, it wasn't always pretty, but Speaking of stories
- 11:18in Heisman frontrunners Chambliss, Trinidad, Chambliss,
- 11:21I mean, what a story coming out of Ferris State.
- 11:23Iowa got to transfer out of Ferris State.
- 11:25Maybe they got the wrong one apparently because this Chamble,
- 11:28Speaking of the betting markets, he is one of the betting
- 11:30favorites. He's like in the top six or
- 11:32seven to win the high. I mean, the guy didn't play
- 11:34total game 3 and here we are. What a performance, what a win.
- 11:39And boy, those late Blues, those baby Blues.
- 11:41What a beautiful uniform when Ole Miss buses those out.
- 11:43No, absolutely. I thought Tennessee, Mississippi
- 11:45State was unbelievably entertaining as Bama City was
- 11:47written like hell for Iowa. I wanted the state to win, but
- 11:51Tennessee was able to pick them off.
- 11:52Vandy, the beat goes on. Really beat nobody.
- 11:55You know what? Let's back back to Pittman's
- 11:58game, but from a Notre Dame perspective.
- 12:02How about Carr? He's a hell of a quarterback.
- 12:05Notre Dame's got a quarterback, boy.
- 12:07CJ Carr can sling it. Notre Dame, like we talked about
- 12:11earlier, the rumor, the Chiefs demise a little greatly
- 12:13exaggerated. I think Notre Dame's a playoff
- 12:15team. Their quarterback looks really,
- 12:17really good. Bama, Georgia, Alabama, you
- 12:19touched on it early. It was a fascinating game.
- 12:22It really was. And the play call to essentially
- 12:25end the game by throwing the football?
- 12:28Well done. Well, Ryan Grubb, as the kids
- 12:32say, was in his bag in this game.
- 12:34The first half was tremendous. They had two drives of 15 plus
- 12:40plays that chewed up 7 1/2 minutes each.
- 12:43In Athens, I mean, Georgia had won 33 straight.
- 12:47That is one of the toughest places, if not the toughest
- 12:50place to get a win anywhere in the country.
- 12:52And they came out off a bye week and absolutely just kept them
- 12:57off balance the entire game. We mentioned the pass to Proctor
- 13:02and good for them. I they said let's you get under
- 13:05360. Well, you know, we're going to
- 13:07run a play for you now. I didn't expect to be in Athens,
- 13:12but still. And they ran another one for him
- 13:14earlier in the game. They had him out wide, put him
- 13:16in motion. I don't know what they were
- 13:18going to do if they were going to, you know, good Lord, if they
- 13:20were going to run a jet sweep with him or not or just have him
- 13:24pull out the, you know, the elite blocker.
- 13:26But Jim Miller had a false start.
- 13:27So they were going to do it. They came back to that again.
- 13:29That was the second time they had something with him lined up.
- 13:32Why? But look, it was it was the
- 13:36signature win obviously for de Boer.
- 13:38You know, there's still some problems right there.
- 13:42Georgia just gashed them on the edges, not between the tackles,
- 13:46but on the edges. They dropped, dropped a wide
- 13:50open touchdown pass. And by the way, if we're going
- 13:53to talk Heisman Simpson, we saw Ty Simpson.
- 13:56Yes. Yes, Kid has played in Listen.
- 13:59He's played in Tallahassee. He's won in Athens.
- 14:02He's played another Big 10 team in Wisconsin.
- 14:04Granted, not very good. I understand the guy has not
- 14:07thrown an intercept. No Lev Levante zip.
- 14:10No interceptions. Yes, he has been fantastic.
- 14:14He has got tremendous grasp. That offense.
- 14:16That was just a really, that was a fun game.
- 14:20Alabama again, did not make adjustments in the second-half.
- 14:23They were shut out, but they did enough and Kirby Smart helped
- 14:26them. I didn't like was about 6
- 14:29minutes left. I did not like not kicking the
- 14:32field goal to tie the game. And then the play they ran was
- 14:34stupid. That's just, that's just coaches
- 14:36trying to out out, you know, smart, everybody else.
- 14:40But again, big win, signature win.
- 14:43Now you got to back it up. I don't know who the best team
- 14:46is in the SEC guys. I was thinking about that when
- 14:48we went on the air. That's the best team in the I
- 14:51can't give it to Missouri because they haven't left
- 14:53Columbia yet they're five and O they haven't left Columbia.
- 14:56They got a bye week this week and then Alabama comes to
- 14:58Columbia. Play a road game before you
- 15:01know, I don't care if you beat Alabama play a road game A&M
- 15:05Auburn is just not very good. They're so limited bandy.
- 15:08How about how about game day going to Tuscaloo for the
- 15:10Vanderbilt game this week? You touched on Pitman and I
- 15:13agree with you, Ole Miss man, something's.
- 15:16Maybe it's them's. Wrong.
- 15:18Something's wrong with LSU, OK. And we're in we're in crisis
- 15:23mode now if you're if you're LSU, because they've been
- 15:26sneaking by with great defense. DJ Lagley gave them 5 picks at
- 15:31that game that they beat Florida.
- 15:34Now they're getting into the meat of their conference
- 15:36schedule on the road and they got they got bigger, tougher
- 15:40games. And that offense is something's
- 15:42wrong with it and it ain't working.
- 15:43And they're in crisis mode down in Baton Rouge.
- 15:46Let's go to the ACC and I want to start with Friday night.
- 15:49Just an unbelievable game on a couple of counts.
- 15:51A behind the curtain with the officials on the touchdown, non
- 15:54touchdown, which is fascinating. Then the students rushed into
- 15:57the field fastest, fastest field rush in the history of of
- 16:00rushing onto the field. So did they get the call right?
- 16:06Nobody knows. I don't think they did.
- 16:08I thought he had possession a long enough inbounds and then he
- 16:13maybe he batted it in a couple of times right before they got
- 16:16to the back of the end zone. But I thought he had possession
- 16:19long enough. But I say this whether I'm right
- 16:21or whether I'm wrong, I love the fact that we heard what the
- 16:23people that make those decisions was going through their mind
- 16:26trend. Yeah, it's perfect and it's the
- 16:28way it should be for all of our football viewing and hopefully
- 16:30we will get to that point. Outside of that, I mean, talk
- 16:34about a big pass. What we're back to it.
- 16:36The ACC stinks. I know Miami's going to be part
- 16:38of the conversation though. I like the points this week with
- 16:41the Seminoles. Well, we'll leave that till
- 16:43Friday's episode. Still, this league, it's just a
- 16:46bunch of below average to average teams beating up on each
- 16:51other outside of the top of the league, the middle, the bottom.
- 16:54This is what holds the ACC conversation down.
- 16:56It's just who do you like? NC State, Cal.
- 17:00It's just a. Second, pull the telly.
- 17:02They're just a bunch of men out. There, Yeah, Georgia Tech, who I
- 17:06thought has a chance to be unbeaten, they just got by.
- 17:10Bama, your thoughts back to Friday and then your thoughts on
- 17:12the ACC. Yeah, the Friday game and I'm
- 17:15glad you mentioned it again with with the with the replay at the
- 17:19live replay that is just again, we talked about it the best
- 17:23invention. It's better than the yellow
- 17:25line. But you want to tell me I can
- 17:26have one or the other get rid of the yellow line.
- 17:28My wife wouldn't like it. That's how she watches football,
- 17:32you know, but I mean to hear that and I will say this, I
- 17:36think they got the call right. I mean, it was Bang, Bang.
- 17:39But I thought that he he might have had one foot down, but he
- 17:43didn't. He kept bobbling.
- 17:44I don't think he ever fully secured it.
- 17:46But be that as it may, I was really afraid that that Florida
- 17:49State receiver is going to get stampeded because that fall hit
- 17:52incomplete. It was about a second and a half
- 17:54and there were 500 people in the end zone.
- 17:58This was a bad loss for Florida State and I think it makes this
- 18:01Miami game a must win because that was a conference game and
- 18:05it's classic, right? This classic trap game.
- 18:07They beat Alabama, they're flying high.
- 18:09Nobody's coming within 50 points of them.
- 18:12They're ranks in the top ten. We got Miami coming in next
- 18:15week. Oh well, we got to beat Virginia
- 18:17too. And then.
- 18:19So if they don't beat Miami now, I think if they don't get into
- 18:23the ACC championship game, they're not getting their large
- 18:25team out of that conference. No way they might not to get to
- 18:29you know, but yeah, they so it's a must win.
- 18:31But I was surprised most surprising outside of that was
- 18:35the way that Duke just hammered Syracuse 38 to three.
- 18:39I did not see that coming. That's up a pretty good match up
- 18:41this week with George Tech. But yeah, that you're right.
- 18:46I was asking who's the best team in the in the SEC?
- 18:49Who's the top five? I mean I guess my 3.
- 18:52In college football overall. Yeah, I mean, Ohio State, Oregon
- 18:57and Miami, I don't know where to go after.
- 18:59That those 3 old miss. A&M.
- 19:03Maybe A&M. Maybe.
- 19:05A&M beat Auburn. I mean, Auburn is so limited.
- 19:08I mean, they just, they've got a no offensive line and I know
- 19:11they won in Notre Dame. Can we throw them in there?
- 19:14Alabama's got a loss. Georgia has a loss.
- 19:16Texas Tech. I mean, now maybe you can't go.
- 19:20Why not? A top five team.
- 19:22Come on, they're unbeaten and. And they played one team with a
- 19:25pulse. Yeah, but they won.
- 19:27Yeah, that Arkansas playing bluff games, I thought.
- 19:30Who Who would you take at Alabama?
- 19:31Texas Tech on a neutral this weekend?
- 19:35You're thinking about that. Oh yeah, I am.
- 19:39Oh boy. I think Texas.
- 19:41I think Texas are pretty good. I don't think they're yeah, I
- 19:44don't think they're top five team.
- 19:45I don't know the answer. Well, God put two other teams
- 19:47there. Who we put in there I put.
- 19:48Alabama there. Alabama, they ran into a bus
- 19:51saw. In week 1.
- 19:52Yeah, I mean, if we're talking. About once beaten or just just
- 19:56power rankings, right? These two team OK, all right.
- 20:02There's still some holes for sure, and I need to see
- 20:05consistency from them because again, coming out of the bye
- 20:09week right now, can you back up that win with Vanderbilt?
- 20:14We talked about Vanderbilt a couple weeks ago.
- 20:17They just, they don't excite anybody and they beat you last
- 20:20year. So you should be up for them.
- 20:22But it's Vanderbilt, right? But game days going to the right
- 20:25spot. Game days going to the right
- 20:27spot. I agree.
- 20:28I think so too. And it's good for Vanderbilt and
- 20:30they're and probably is going to get a lot of attention, a lot of
- 20:33eyeballs, and he deserves it. Oklahoma, if Mateer wouldn't
- 20:36have got hurt. Yes, yeah, but.
- 20:39He's hurt, Baba. We're out of time, brother.
- 20:41We'll talk to you on Friday. I appreciate you doing this as
- 20:44always and look forward to Friday.
- 20:45Thanks, Baba. Can't wait guys talk to.
- 20:48You good? Good to talk to you.
- 20:49Bam. Bob Tritt and I put a bow on the
- 20:51week of college football. Time to head to kxando.com right
- 20:55now. It's time for another keyword.
- 20:56Your opportunity to win $1000. Simple.
- 20:58See the pop up box? Type the keyword DOLLAR
- 21:01dollar@kxno.com. Your chance to win $1000
- 21:05dollar@kxno.com. It's got Doctor Miller and
- 21:08Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:13I'm Nori Condon, welcome back. 1:30 on a Monday.
- 21:16Mr. Monday night's got a double header tonight.
- 21:18We'll hear his pics coming up here in about 20 minutes.
- 21:20Right now, let's talk to our friend Scott Dockerman.
- 21:23He writes for The Athletic and he joins us.
- 21:26His piece on what we learned in the Big 10 was posted this
- 21:28morning at The Athletic. Pretty good weekend in the Big
- 21:3110, especially for Rd. team. Scott Dockerman, good to speak
- 21:33with you. How are you?
- 21:36I'm doing great. How's it going today in Des
- 21:37Moines, Oh? Everything.
- 21:39'S just peachy keen. Absolutely.
- 21:41Well, a lot of ground to cover with you.
- 21:42I know you were at the the Hoosiers and the Hawks.
- 21:46I thought Kennick Stadium almost pulled it out again, as you've
- 21:48seen it do many times. The crowd was fantastic.
- 21:51Phil Parker was at his best, I thought.
- 21:55But it seemed like, I hate to say it, Doc, but it seemed like
- 21:58the Hawks let one slip away. And then maybe, and that maybe
- 22:00that's not being fair to Indiana because that's a really good
- 22:03football team, but boy, I thought the Hawks let one slip
- 22:05away. There were a couple of plays I
- 22:09think in in each phase, late in the game, within the final 2 1/2
- 22:14minutes where Iowa could have won the game and or and OR late
- 22:19went on defense and yet it slipped away.
- 22:22And I think #1 is the the screen pass that Hank Brown threw in
- 22:26the rubber filament instead of to the running back?
- 22:31Because chances are at that point, even if he gets tackled
- 22:36and doesn't reach the first down, then you at least get it
- 22:40past the two-minute warning. Now it didn't matter ultimately
- 22:42in the timing of things, but at least you would have had that
- 22:46opportunity and then you could have set yourself up for a field
- 22:49goal and inside of two minutes, if he gets the first down, you
- 22:53milk the clock, you kick the field goal.
- 22:55If conceivably you win the game, maybe you centered a little bit
- 22:58better for your kicker and and you win the game.
- 23:00But your your field goal kicker, who has been great and mediocre
- 23:05in the same season, misses that field goal, which is so unlike
- 23:09him or Iowa to miss in those moments.
- 23:11They just traditionally make them.
- 23:13And then, of course, finally, the the zero blitz column third
- 23:16and 10, which is understandable because the pressure was was
- 23:20really effective of the game. But Indiana just kind of woke up
- 23:25and realized, hey, we've got one-on-one coverage with one of
- 23:28the best receivers in the country on probably the weak
- 23:31link of the secondary. Let's take advantage of that.
- 23:33And Elijah Sarat was smart enough to flatten his route a
- 23:37little bit and break a little faster.
- 23:39And and once he did, I mean, Deshaun Lee was back too far.
- 23:43He's just not quick enough to to keep up with him and boom, he
- 23:45was off the races. And, and so, you know, all, all
- 23:48of it is execution. You hate to say it, but it's
- 23:52true. And and that's really what kept
- 23:54Iowa from, you know, generating a money rental upset.
- 23:58Schedule's incredibly difficult and the bye week comes at a good
- 24:01time with the Gronowski injury and we'll see on that front.
- 24:03Learn more obviously about it going forward here in the next
- 24:06week or two. However, this team two losses
- 24:09already second consecutive year 2 early losses in September
- 24:13lives a lot of people leading to chirping and certainly about the
- 24:16future of the program on the heels of one that would have
- 24:20been, should have been and the one back in Week 2 that would
- 24:23have been should have been. But they're ending in LS.
- 24:26Do you read anything into that doc or is it is it too much?
- 24:29Is it just paint with a broad stroke, couple of bounces go the
- 24:32different way. We're talking about A5 and O
- 24:33team right now. You know, this is a team that's
- 24:38that's a little bit limited, but I thought, you know, you lose by
- 24:41eight points to two teams in the side of the top 15.
- 24:44That's not that's not getting blown out.
- 24:46That's not getting boat raised by somebody you shouldn't be.
- 24:48It's not. I would say last year there were
- 24:50worse losses. UCLA and Michigan State.
- 24:52If it if it was those types of losses, then yeah.
- 24:55I think that there's a major right in people complaining.
- 24:58But you know, the the whole rhetoric that I hear from
- 25:01people, it's like it's it's so 0 sum in Iowa.
- 25:04It's kind of nausea dating at times because if they lose, it's
- 25:08like, I've seen enough. It's time.
- 25:10It's time. It's time for Kirk to hang it
- 25:12up. I'm tired of this.
- 25:13You know, he needs to be fired. What's his buyout?
- 25:16Come on. You know, Indiana's a pretty
- 25:18good team. I, I, I was at that game against
- 25:20Illinois, and I can attest to you that Iowa played Indiana so
- 25:24much better than just about any team I've seen play Indiana
- 25:27other than Notre Dame in person. And then, of course, Ohio State
- 25:30last year. Iowa played a great game.
- 25:32Iowa, to me, it looks better now than it did before the game.
- 25:37There are a lot of questions after the Rutgers game about it.
- 25:39Can their past defense even handle anybody like it?
- 25:41You know, Indiana and they showed they could.
- 25:44I think TJ Hall had an outstanding game.
- 25:47I thought Cohen enteringer was everywhere when needed to be.
- 25:49I thought the defensive line played really well.
- 25:52I think they're they got a little bit of a liability at
- 25:54middle linebacker just speed wise.
- 25:56But overall, they played hard and, and offensively when
- 26:00Gradowski was in there, they they seem to figure out what
- 26:02they want to do and how they want to move the ball.
- 26:05He was accurate. He ran the ball.
- 26:07Kamari Moulton played well. I think it's really short
- 26:10sighted and, and this is in today's world, you're going to
- 26:13get this just to say, well, let's throw out the season
- 26:15because maybe the CFP is is off the table or almost off the
- 26:19table. And I think that's yeah, over
- 26:21that. I mean, this team's probably an
- 26:238 and four or seven and five seas team.
- 26:26And in the totality of what you want, that's not what you want.
- 26:29However, when you look at the team, their schedule and the
- 26:32teams are playing, you know, if you can't take that, go ahead,
- 26:36roll the dice like Wisconsin did, and you're going to get
- 26:38what you're going to get. Absolutely.
- 26:40Your thoughts on Penn State? Oregon looked like Oregon was
- 26:43home free. Penn State gets back in the game
- 26:45and then drew Allard the interception and overtime.
- 26:48I mean, for a guy, for a guy's been thrown that many passes and
- 26:50played that many games, you just can't make that throw, Doc.
- 26:54I was below. I was I was dumbfounded by him
- 26:56throwing that footballs, particularly the way it ended
- 26:58up. Your thoughts on what you saw?
- 27:00Penn State, Oregon Is Oregon a legitimate threat in the Big 10
- 27:03again? Absolutely, Oregon is the most
- 27:07impressive team so far in the country to me.
- 27:10You know, their their game against Northwestern was, you
- 27:13know, kind of lackadaisical. Those games happen.
- 27:15You're on the road, you're playing at 9:00 AM on your body
- 27:17clock. But to go in that environment,
- 27:19which I think in the Big 10 is the most intimidating when it is
- 27:22a whiteout and you got 107,000 people and you know what they
- 27:26want because they need that win and they beat.
- 27:29You beat them last year in the Big 10 championship game.
- 27:33To go in and there and dominate for, you know, certainly for the
- 27:36better part of the second-half and then to pull out the victory
- 27:38at the end, I think that is really impressive.
- 27:42And Dante Moore to me on, you know, we were starting our
- 27:45Heisman ballot watch. He's number one.
- 27:47I mean, he is playing really well.
- 27:50And for for Dan Lanning, he has not lost a Big 10 conference
- 27:53game. And to do that as a newbie going
- 27:55on the road, going to these places, that's just really
- 27:58impressive. On the flip side, you know,
- 28:00there's this, you swing back and forth with Penn State, you know,
- 28:05against teams that are ranked in the top six.
- 28:07He's 2 and 18. And those two wins happened in
- 28:10in 2016. You've got to win these games.
- 28:13Now, you could also say they're right there.
- 28:15They were down by two touchdowns when they allowed Drew Aller
- 28:18just to kind of be himself. He came back, he scored
- 28:21touchdowns. They they went to overtime.
- 28:23They scored first in overtime. They did all the right things.
- 28:25And sometimes when you get a double OT, things happen.
- 28:27But but there is a pattern. And therefore losses over the
- 28:31last two years, three of them were ended with the opportunity
- 28:35to to win or tie because of their our interceptions.
- 28:38The other one was Ohio State where they were stranded at the
- 28:401 yard line. So they're not they're not
- 28:43making the biggest plays at the biggest time.
- 28:45So I think Penn State's going to have that question.
- 28:48And, and, and from what I've seen of them, that they're
- 28:51vulnerable to not only losing to Ohio State, but also getting
- 28:55upset somewhere on the road, you know, at a tough venue.
- 28:58And if that happens in their nine and three, that place is
- 29:01going to be a mosh pit of anger for a long, long time.
- 29:06Doc, I know you put together the week weekly bracket, kind of the
- 29:09projected bracket as it looks in college football and the SEC can
- 29:14ask earlier who's the best team in the SEC, I don't know.
- 29:16I mean, it's just it is incredibly difficult.
- 29:19I have a feeling we might be treading towards, you know, a
- 29:22half dozen teams 9:00 and 3:10 and 2:00 didn't get to the
- 29:26conference championship game. And trying to figure out these
- 29:28resumes coupled with only eight conference games and not having
- 29:31the same amount of bat data points.
- 29:33What have you been able to figure out in the SEC to this
- 29:35point? And figuring out who should be a
- 29:37playoff team. Who will be a playoff team going
- 29:39forward? I spent more on that dynamic
- 29:44than any other when it came to the other night.
- 29:45I mean, there's there's like 10 legitimate teams in the SEC that
- 29:49could be playoff teams, but all of them have some sort of a pock
- 29:53mark. I mean, I guess Ole Miss in
- 29:55Oklahoma really don't you know, at this point.
- 29:57But but still, there's there's just a lot of questions out
- 30:00there and you know, Texas lost at Ohio State.
- 30:03Are they but they won these games.
- 30:04I mean, they're, you can go any to all of them and they've got
- 30:08something there and they're going to accumulate something as
- 30:11the the season progresses. And so I had five of them in and
- 30:15I'm like, OK, which ones do I leave out?
- 30:17And that may be very difficult. So I mean, as we kind of matrix
- 30:20through the season, we will. But I, I entered, I was in the
- 30:24mock CFP meeting two weeks ago in Dallas and, and went through
- 30:29like all of the data you could possibly.
- 30:32And the data is monstrous. It, you know, to ask the
- 30:36committee to go through more data is probably
- 30:38counterproductive. It can only tell you because
- 30:41because your eyes get glossy, you look at this strength of
- 30:44schedule component and it's better than this one.
- 30:46But then there's this and then there's this and the metrics and
- 30:49you're going, I don't know, you know, you just really go through
- 30:52it and and I'm going to write about it this week.
- 30:54And and I think that's going to be the same way here.
- 30:57That's why I'm not entirely opposed to the auto bids for the
- 31:02conferences because I think in some respects, when you look at
- 31:06the Big 12, I mean, the two teams, I was basically like flip
- 31:09a coin between Texas Tech and Iowa State, who's who's better
- 31:12at this point? They're both really good.
- 31:15But then some, each of them, let's say, gets tripped up and
- 31:18then one of them loses in the Big 12 title game.
- 31:20They're going to get left behind.
- 31:22It's going to happen almost every year.
- 31:23They're going to get left behind by the SEC and the Big 10.
- 31:26So, you know, if I'm the Big 12, I, I cheer for that, you know,
- 31:30because at least you're going to get 2 teams in, even if it's 16.
- 31:33So, so, and the ACC is somewhat like that too.
- 31:37I mean, so I, I think at this point it's just, it's so
- 31:42uncertain. Big 10 is really deep, SEC is
- 31:45even deeper, and there's just a lot of question marks.
- 31:48Yeah. And your Mark who, I don't think
- 31:50he's made very many mistakes, if any, this is one of them by him
- 31:52not taking that two that was given to him.
- 31:56We'll see. Obviously, they got a long way
- 31:57to go before they ultimately decide how this thing is going
- 32:01to look. Scott Doctorman from the
- 32:02athletic Dock, great stuff as always.
- 32:04Appreciate having you on. So just because I don't recall,
- 32:07I'm trying, did you do that exercise, the mock exercise when
- 32:11it comes to the NCAA basketball bracket?
- 32:15I've not done the basketball 1, but I I was officially marked
- 32:19Antonio in the mock draft meeting two weeks ago in Dallas.
- 32:23Yeah, I wanted to see if you could compare the two, if there
- 32:25was any similarities at all. No, I, yeah, I haven't gone
- 32:30through that. I I don't know, maybe some point
- 32:32I will, but it's definitely a thorough process.
- 32:35Did they feed you like they feed the guys on the committee?
- 32:39I suppose so at least one one of the meals, but yeah, that's not
- 32:44anything I but no, they're great.
- 32:47They're they're great to deal with.
- 32:48They're, it was, it was really, it's just going to be when you
- 32:52see the amount of information and pressure that is applied to
- 32:56the, the selection committee, you can understand the benefit
- 33:00of the doubt And you almost, you feel for them.
- 33:04Because when we went to the last selection between basically SMU,
- 33:08Ole Miss and Alabama, the last at large, it was, I mean, we, we
- 33:13went around for about 45 minutes trying to figure out who is
- 33:16better among them based on all their, their resume.
- 33:19And, and they usually do that for four or five hours.
- 33:22We all thought if it comes easy and anybody can do it, but
- 33:25apparently not. I look forward to that peace
- 33:27talk. When's that going to hit the
- 33:28Athletic? I think it's Wednesday or
- 33:31Thursday stuff, so it's I've got to get it, get it, get it done
- 33:34by tomorrow, so. Pressure's on.
- 33:37We'll let you go. Thank you, Scott Dockerman.
- 33:38Appreciate what you do for Trent and myself.
- 33:40We'll talk to you next week if your schedule allows.
- 33:42Thank you, Scott. All right.
- 33:44Thanks for having me. Good.
- 33:44To have you, Scott Dockerman from The Athletic, that'd be a
- 33:47fun exercise. I'd love to tell somebody that
- 33:49was that's done on both, you know, done the basketball 1,
- 33:53gone to Indy and went through those steps as opposed to this
- 33:55one here. That sounds like pretty cool
- 33:57exercise. Definitely a different one.
- 33:59Sure, absolutely, Mr. Monday Night, What's his record?
- 34:03Two and two I believe. Well, he's got 2 tonight.
- 34:06He went. The double header O for two and
- 34:09I believe one of the I'll look back through the records, go
- 34:12into the notebook and see what he is officially when we come
- 34:15back. All right, good stuff.
- 34:16Well, that's coming up next. Miller and Condon, our final
- 34:18segment on a Monday. Glad you're with us on Des
- 34:20Moines sports station one O 6.3 KXO on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 34:24Network. I'm Lori Condon welcome back 10
- 34:26minutes before 2 top of the hour off the bench on Roberts Lucas
- 34:30Strain taking until 5 overtime Iowa five to six.
- 34:33The first quarter starts a new day of programming here on the
- 34:37Iowa Sports Radio Network and Des Moines sports station One O
- 34:406.3 KX&O every Monday through Friday at 6:00 AM Heather
- 34:44Burnside and Alec Bussey Well, Mr. Monday night making an
- 34:48appearance doubleheader. The odds from the wager talk is
- 34:53down, which is strange. I see All right, I think I I
- 34:57think Denver was about it. Well, I got my app.
- 34:59I guess we had opened it 7 1/2 seven and a half.
- 35:01And what's are the Dolphins favored?
- 35:04What? 3 1/2. 2 and 2 1/2 OK.
- 35:07There are some threes in the. Market let's get Mr. Monday and
- 35:09I'd say, oh, he sees the double header on Monday Night Football.
- 35:12One play for Mr. Monday Night Cincinnati.
- 35:16You what? Love the chili?
- 35:18No, you don't. It's terrible.
- 35:21That's average. Not at all.
- 35:22I've never even had it. They put it on spaghetti.
- 35:25Yes, I love spaghetti. You know what?
- 35:28I tried and it wasn't awful. It wasn't awful.
- 35:30The Forget the chili. Was that was one of the better,
- 35:33better ways I've heard it said? Because I've heard a lot worse
- 35:36than. That it wasn't awful.
- 35:37So you're so why is he taking the Bengals?
- 35:41They can't be as bad as they looked against the Vikings.
- 35:43There are so many trends that point to teams that get blown
- 35:46out like that in the NFL. Hell, it was Atlanta.
- 35:49There's a reason I like that, Lana.
- 35:50There are trends that show you teams coming off Monster Plus.
- 35:53Now there's another one that I saw today and it was something
- 35:56like teams that turn it over five times or more, or like 4
- 35:59and 18 against the spread the next week.
- 36:01So look, there's a trend in the NFL for anything that you want.
- 36:05I am a believer, though, teams that just have that kind of
- 36:08performance the week after, and that's Mr. Monday Night, likes
- 36:11that trend. So, well, listen, Mr. Monday
- 36:13Night, probably watch weeks Whatever Week 17, the
- 36:16penultimate week of last year's regular season and saw T Higgins
- 36:20eat Riley Moss's lunch. He embarrassed. 130 yards, 3
- 36:23touchdowns, like 11 catches. Yes, like you look like Riley
- 36:26Moss, freshman at Purdue. Yeah, it really did.
- 36:29I mean it was terrible, but Joe Burrow was throwing the
- 36:34football. Joe Burrow's not in Denver
- 36:35tonight. At least you it might be.
- 36:37He's not dressed. Denver's not going to lose 3
- 36:39games in a row, are they? I can't see it Trent.
- 36:43I just can't look at our Survivor hopes are on Denver
- 36:46tonight or once again for the 4th consecutive year, we will
- 36:50not see the month of October in this God forsaken I hated
- 36:53contest and I can't wait to play next year.
- 36:56So I I just love the back and forth that you have with this
- 36:59contest every single year. And before on I think it was
- 37:03Friday, we were talking before the show, you're talking about
- 37:06putting all your money into Survivor, that it was all going
- 37:08to go there. You're done with millions after
- 37:12last year when he got knocked out of Survivor, you weren't
- 37:14doing you weren't doing that whenever again, it was only
- 37:16going to be millions for you. Never again are you going to do
- 37:19Survivor. So the back and forth, it's a
- 37:22great contest. It's so much fun.
- 37:23Truly is a lot of fun. I would just like to see
- 37:26October. There's a huge number of entries
- 37:28on Denver also tonight, are there?
- 37:30Yes. I saw the splits over the
- 37:33weekend and, well, it was when the Saints were hanging around
- 37:36against the bills, they said. There was a 2 point game midway
- 37:38through the fourth quarter. They were there.
- 37:40That bill's defense. Sucks.
- 37:41They're bad. You know, I said it earlier and
- 37:44I mean it and I hate that I mean it.
- 37:47I I want to be wrong. I think after what I witnessed
- 37:51yesterday and again, the Ravens defense is not good.
- 37:54Are the Chiefs again the most complete team in the NFL?
- 37:58The Eagles have offensive issues.
- 37:59Yes, no doubt they do. A.J.
- 38:01Brown can't do anything. No, they don't give them the
- 38:03ball. No, Green Bay looked like a
- 38:05legitimate threat in the in the in the NFC, you don't tie the
- 38:09Dallas Cowboys. I have no idea how they lost
- 38:12that game. I truly don't.
- 38:14Tampa Bay, they might win the NFC.
- 38:17They're extremely banged up, too.
- 38:19I mean, Mike Evans is taking his standard month off.
- 38:23He always does, but they, if it would have, should have beat the
- 38:25Eagles yesterday. They were doing that so depleted
- 38:28on that offensive line. And yeah, if you say maybe the
- 38:32Chiefs are the most complete team, could you say the Bucks
- 38:33are the most complete team in the NFC?
- 38:35Well, I I maybe. Oh my God.
- 38:39Another Chiefs Bucks Super Bowl. I hope it's the same result if
- 38:43that's what we get. 1830 entries on the Broncos tonight,
- 38:47including Ken Miller. Go, Broncos, go.
- 38:51We'll talk to you tomorrow. Coming up next off the bench,
- 38:54Trent and I with you every Monday through Friday, noon to
- 38:56two. Glad you spent time with us.
- 38:58Hope you will tomorrow on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
