- 0:10Speaker 1: What's up, everybody? How you doing out there? This is
- 0:12Speaker 1: the check O Daily. I am Andrew Dicheco. The Eagles
- 0:16Speaker 1: hold on and win, and a thrower at Lincoln Financial Field,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and what was one of the most bizarre, wild whatever
- 0:23Speaker 1: adjectivity would like to use games that I've ever covered.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And bear in mind that I've covered two Super Bowls.
- 0:29Speaker 1: That covered the snow game that in the Divisional round,
- 0:32Speaker 1: the Commander's Game last season where Jaywen Hurts left the game,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and there was all kinds of things that happened that
- 0:37Speaker 1: in that one.
- 0:38Speaker 2: But this one was up there.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I'm not quite ready to say this is the wildest
- 0:42Speaker 1: game I've ever covered, but it had a little bit
- 0:44Speaker 1: of everything. And so the start of the game, I mean,
- 0:50Speaker 1: Zach Bond gets the Eagles rolling with an interception off
- 0:54Speaker 1: Matthew Stafford read the eyes of Stafford, jumps the pass,
- 0:59Speaker 1: returns session to the Eagles.
- 1:01Speaker 2: The Eagles go on and they.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Score Jaywen Hurts with a one yard plunge up the middle,
- 1:06Speaker 1: and you get the sense that the Eagles are going
- 1:08Speaker 1: to be rolling. But then the Rams get the ball
- 1:12Speaker 1: and they are in really good command. I thought they
- 1:15Speaker 1: did a nice job controlling the line of scrimmage. They
- 1:19Speaker 1: got handled. They handled the Eagles up front, especially with
- 1:22Speaker 1: that inside zone with Kyron Williams. Kyron Williams had sixty
- 1:25Speaker 1: nine yards on thirteen carries at the break, and I
- 1:30Speaker 1: thought that you saw the Eagles of defensive line struggle,
- 1:34Speaker 1: the second level struggle to defend that inside zone, and
- 1:38Speaker 1: they controlled the clock. Matthew Stafford hits DeVante Adams for
- 1:42Speaker 1: a forty four yard touchdown over reblanket ship, and you
- 1:46Speaker 1: just get the sense that things are starting to get
- 1:48Speaker 1: a little bit out of control, and the Eagles offense
- 1:50Speaker 1: was not able to counter.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Again.
- 1:53Speaker 1: They did a nice job with Saquon Barkley this time,
- 1:56Speaker 1: but again the passing game wasn't really there to compliment
- 1:58Speaker 1: or offset what the Rams were looking to do. And
- 2:02Speaker 1: I like to always throw this out there because I
- 2:05Speaker 1: do need to go back and watch the game the
- 2:07Speaker 1: coaches tape and get a better idea of where the
- 2:11Speaker 1: breakdowns were, why some of those deficiencies were surfacing. But
- 2:16Speaker 1: the Rams were in really good control of that first half.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Joshua Carty the kicker, was delivering on their field goals.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I thought I thought Sean McVay was maybe a little
- 2:27Speaker 1: bit conservative, But there were moments that I didn't think
- 2:31Speaker 1: that I thought that the Eagles could have or should
- 2:34Speaker 1: have been able to benefit off of Stafford because there
- 2:37Speaker 1: were sometimes in that first half where he was throwing
- 2:40Speaker 1: high and inaccurate, and those are opportunities where if you're
- 2:45Speaker 1: able to defend the run and force him to make
- 2:47Speaker 1: those throws he wasn't necessarily dealing as a passer. That's
- 2:50Speaker 1: where you're able to capitalize and sort of flip momentum
- 2:54Speaker 1: and play complimentary football. But as it were, the the
- 3:00Speaker 1: Rams were able to to kind of take care of
- 3:02Speaker 1: business in the first half. But then I should also
- 3:05Speaker 1: mention that Lane Johnson goes out with a neck injury,
- 3:10Speaker 1: who's listed as questionable, didn't return to the game. But
- 3:13Speaker 1: the Eagles put Matt Pryor in there at right tackle,
- 3:16Speaker 1: not Fred Johnson initially.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And I guess, and I've gotten asked a lot about that.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Why Matt Pryor, why not Fred Johnson too at the
- 3:25Speaker 1: you know, for the immediate replacement, And I think it's
- 3:28Speaker 1: because Matt Pryor had been there all summer working with
- 3:31Speaker 1: Jeff Stotlin. Fred Johnson got there, you know, before the season.
- 3:37Speaker 2: But there was it was.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It was via trade and maybe you have to, you know,
- 3:42Speaker 1: familiarize yourself a little bit before they felt comfortable. But
- 3:46Speaker 1: what I did notice is Matt Pryor struggled the offense.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And it's not solely because of Matt Pryor, but they
- 3:52Speaker 1: weren't able to run their offense effectively with him. There
- 3:56Speaker 1: there were a lot of third and longs in that
- 3:58Speaker 1: first half, and they had to be passive in that
- 4:01Speaker 1: situation in punt were I'm sorry, hand the ball offer
- 4:05Speaker 1: and I know that there was a lot of frustration.
- 4:07Speaker 1: There was a lot of booing going on for a
- 4:09Speaker 1: two to zero team, surprisingly and.
- 4:13Speaker 2: There was a lot of frustration there. I understand that.
- 4:15Speaker 1: But the offense was not able to run effectively and
- 4:19Speaker 1: it got things started a snowball.
- 4:21Speaker 2: When Matt Pryor was put into the game.
- 4:24Speaker 1: There was a play coming out of the break where
- 4:27Speaker 1: he gave up a sack fumble to Jared Verse, and
- 4:32Speaker 1: that looked like here we go, Like, you know, they're
- 4:35Speaker 1: going to continue to build off of what they were
- 4:37Speaker 1: able to do in the first half. And then the
- 4:39Speaker 1: Eagles turn and they put Fred Johnson in it right
- 4:42Speaker 1: tackle and that sort of turned the tides, But I
- 4:46Speaker 1: think the big story here and there's so much to unpack,
- 4:50Speaker 1: so it may seem like I'm a little bit all
- 4:52Speaker 1: over the place here because I'm trying to replay this
- 4:54Speaker 1: game in my mind. The Eagles were three for three
- 4:57Speaker 1: in the red zone. The Rams were one for four.
- 4:59Speaker 1: They weren't able to cash in despite being able to
- 5:02Speaker 1: move the ball up and down the field. You know,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I thought that the passing game for the Rams didn't
- 5:09Speaker 1: quite exploit the Eagles secondary as much as I thought,
- 5:12Speaker 1: particularly a Dory Jackson in that cornerback spot. So I
- 5:15Speaker 1: think you have to give a Dory Jackson some credit
- 5:17Speaker 1: for being able to largely hold his own. He left
- 5:20Speaker 1: the game with the groin injury and was replaced by
- 5:21Speaker 1: Jacory and Bennett. You heard about the Lane Johnson neck injury.
- 5:27Speaker 1: He didn't come back in the game. And also Darius Cooper,
- 5:30Speaker 1: the wide receiver, left the game with a shoulder injury
- 5:32Speaker 1: and did not return.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Special teams.
- 5:36Speaker 1: We have to talk about special teams because while they
- 5:41Speaker 1: made several or I should say a couple of really
- 5:43Speaker 1: big plays that altered the momentum in this game, there
- 5:46Speaker 1: was also an issue that they had fielding the knuckleball
- 5:50Speaker 1: of kicker Joshua Cardy, and whether it was Tank Bigsby
- 5:54Speaker 1: sort of muffing it and misplaying the ball or John Metchi,
- 5:59Speaker 1: they weren't able to really get a good read on it,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and it put the Eagles offense, which was already struggling.
- 6:06Speaker 2: They were reeling right. They put them in bad field position.
- 6:10Speaker 1: They have to figure out that kick return situation, or
- 6:13Speaker 1: at least who knows, maybe that was a byproduct of
- 6:15Speaker 1: the kicker, but they didn't have those explosive qualities. And
- 6:20Speaker 1: I think not having Will Shipley, who was out for
- 6:22Speaker 1: this game, perhaps he returns next week when the Eagles
- 6:25Speaker 1: are in Tampa, that is able to kind of alter
- 6:27Speaker 1: the complexion of the return game and get them on
- 6:29Speaker 1: the right foot.
- 6:32Speaker 2: But today they weren't good enough in.
- 6:34Speaker 1: That area, and I think a lot of that had
- 6:35Speaker 1: to do with possibly the way that Joshua Carty kicked
- 6:39Speaker 1: the football. But in the second half, what I noticed
- 6:44Speaker 1: was the Eagles were able to run their offense. Now
- 6:48Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley still it was tough sledding for him to
- 6:52Speaker 1: find yards, and I thought that the Rams did a
- 6:56Speaker 1: nice job of swarming to the football A hat on
- 7:00Speaker 1: a hat and really playing physical and this is an
- 7:03Speaker 1: undersized RAMS unit. Well again, I have to go back
- 7:06Speaker 1: and watch the tape a second time to figure out
- 7:08Speaker 1: where the deficiencies lie. But when the running game wasn't
- 7:14Speaker 1: going well, I thought that jaywhen hurds in the third
- 7:16Speaker 1: quarter really sort of reinvigorated the offense. There was a
- 7:21Speaker 1: thirty eight yard pass to AJ Brown down the right sideline.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Then there was the thirty three yard touchdown over the
- 7:26Speaker 1: middle to Dallas Goddard. DeVante Smith came up big a
- 7:29Speaker 1: lot in this game on short to intermediate completions, usually shorthanded.
- 7:34Speaker 1: He had a drop in that one. Dallas Goddard had
- 7:36Speaker 1: to drop in the game. Just very uncharacteristic for the Eagles.
- 7:40Speaker 2: But who, by the way, went.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Into this game winning eighteen out of nineteen games. Now
- 7:45Speaker 1: they've won nineteen out of twenty, so they went at
- 7:48Speaker 1: a remarkable clip, of course, but that was not their
- 7:51Speaker 1: best start to the game. And it started to get
- 7:56Speaker 1: into a rhythm once AJ.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Brown got going.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And I think back to a play where it was
- 8:01Speaker 1: the third and ten late in the game, maybe it
- 8:02Speaker 1: was their fourth quarter.
- 8:04Speaker 2: AJ catches a pass on Darius Williams.
- 8:06Speaker 1: The corner shakes the tackle and it turned into a
- 8:10Speaker 1: twenty five yard gain and I think he had a
- 8:12Speaker 1: twenty three yarder on that series. As on that same
- 8:15Speaker 1: series as well, Davante had a number of big catches,
- 8:19Speaker 1: So this is you're starting to see perhaps the passing
- 8:23Speaker 1: game start to round into form a little bit. I
- 8:26Speaker 1: thought the Eagles were more aggressive in the second half,
- 8:29Speaker 1: and that's something that is a sentiment that I thought
- 8:31Speaker 1: Jaywen Hurts expressed. AJ Brown after the game expressed that.
- 8:36Speaker 1: But we'll have to wait and see if they're able
- 8:38Speaker 1: to kind of have some similar success against the Buccaneers
- 8:41Speaker 1: because I imagine they're gonna have to get the football moving
- 8:45Speaker 1: through the air and that one as well. We'll see
- 8:47Speaker 1: if they're able to get off to you know, if
- 8:50Speaker 1: they're able to kind of exploit that.

- 12:24Speaker 3: We're in the show notes and support the show, but.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Special teams and I mean look Jalen Carter block the
- 12:33Speaker 1: field goal and Jordan Davis shot through the a gap
- 12:37Speaker 1: with three seconds left. Joshua Cardy going for the forty
- 12:41Speaker 1: four yard field goal for the win, and he gets
- 12:45Speaker 1: in there, gets a pall up there and bats the
- 12:48Speaker 1: pass down, rejects it. The ball is in front of him,
- 12:51Speaker 1: he runs to it, sprints, gets eighteen point five miles
- 12:56Speaker 1: per hour on the on the top speed scores. The
- 12:59Speaker 1: Eagles win thirty three to twenty six, but it looked
- 13:03Speaker 1: a little dicey there for a second because Jalen Hurts
- 13:06Speaker 1: marches the Eagles down the field, throws a touchdown to
- 13:08Speaker 1: Devonte Smith for the go ahead touchdown to make it
- 13:11Speaker 1: twenty seven to twenty six. The two point conversion to
- 13:14Speaker 1: DeVante Smith was incomplete, but it left.
- 13:18Speaker 2: The Rams with a minute forty eight to go.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Matthew Stafford gets, you know, a pass to pooka Akua
- 13:25Speaker 1: he had won to Jordan Wittington. Kyron Williams had a
- 13:28Speaker 1: couple of catches and boom, all of a sudden, they're
- 13:29Speaker 1: in field goal territory and in position to win the game,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and Jordan Davis comes through with a massive play to
- 13:38Speaker 1: step in there and get a hand in and runs
- 13:40Speaker 1: it the rest of the way. The team swarms him
- 13:43Speaker 1: into the end zone. The Eagles win in an unprecedented fashion.
- 13:47Speaker 1: So there's just so many different elements in this game.
- 13:50Speaker 1: That I find to be pretty fascinating and it's gonna
- 13:52Speaker 1: be very difficult to cover it all. But I also
- 13:56Speaker 1: want to circle back to an unsung hero in this game,
- 13:59Speaker 1: and that was Fred Johnson. Because Fred Johnson, when he
- 14:02Speaker 1: was acquired, it was largely because of the Eagles not
- 14:06Speaker 1: being one hundred percent sold on their depth along the
- 14:10Speaker 1: offensive line. You bring him in, a player who has
- 14:14Speaker 1: been a nice story of development here under Jeff Staltland.
- 14:17Speaker 1: You know that he can be the swing tackle, and
- 14:20Speaker 1: in my estimation he was going to be the swing
- 14:23Speaker 1: tackle on game day. That's sixth offensive lineman. You know
- 14:26Speaker 1: what he can do. He's familiar with the system, so
- 14:29Speaker 1: was surprising to me to see Matt Prior get the
- 14:31Speaker 1: initial nod in replacement of Lane Johnson. Fred Johnson gets
- 14:34Speaker 1: plugged in, holds his own more than holds his own,
- 14:37Speaker 1: at least on first watch, and I think that that
- 14:40Speaker 1: is a byproduct of what of his ability to be
- 14:45Speaker 1: receptive to the coaching. This is just a good system
- 14:48Speaker 1: for him, but he has a knack for stepping in
- 14:50Speaker 1: and answering the bell every time his numbers called, and
- 14:54Speaker 1: the offense likely isn't able to produce the points that
- 14:56Speaker 1: they did in the second half without him doing enough
- 14:59Speaker 1: in his the area to kind of keep some of
- 15:03Speaker 1: those pass rushers at bay. So he deserves a lot
- 15:06Speaker 1: of credit in this game. So does Jordan Davis, who
- 15:09Speaker 1: had five tackles a sack. He had the tackle for
- 15:14Speaker 1: the fourth down stop, which I thought was huge. I Mean,
- 15:17Speaker 1: they credited Jalen Carter and Zach Bond, but it looked
- 15:20Speaker 1: like Jordan Davis was in there. The sack play that
- 15:23Speaker 1: he had on Matthew Stafford running towards the sideline, it
- 15:26Speaker 1: reminded me of the Josh Allen play from two years ago.
- 15:28Speaker 1: But asking Jalen Carter about that after the game, when
- 15:33Speaker 1: he was asked about it, he spoke and said, look,
- 15:36Speaker 1: he's been able to make those plays.
- 15:37Speaker 2: He's faster than me. I've told you guys that before.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Just really proud of Jordan Davis and everything that he's
- 15:44Speaker 1: been able to do to round in the form.
- 15:47Speaker 2: He's in fantastic shape. He's playing.
- 15:50Speaker 1: You know, he played everything like forty five ish snaps
- 15:54Speaker 1: around there.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Second.
- 15:56Speaker 1: I think he played more snaps than Moro Jomo by
- 15:59Speaker 1: the way. Just being a disruptive force at the point
- 16:02Speaker 1: of attack and making the most of his opportunity, making
- 16:05Speaker 1: good on the investment that the Eagles, the investment and
- 16:10Speaker 1: the support that the Eagles have shown him. So he
- 16:13Speaker 1: was obviously the player of the game, probably going to
- 16:16Speaker 1: get Defensive Player of the of the Week or at
- 16:19Speaker 1: least certainly a candidate for that, and had Joshua Cardy
- 16:22Speaker 1: not had the two field goal blocks and Jay when
- 16:26Speaker 1: Carter was asked about did you see anything on tape
- 16:28Speaker 1: about their deficiencies in the past in the field goal protection,
- 16:31Speaker 1: he said, well, they lost the right guard. They had
- 16:34Speaker 1: to plug somebody in and that was Bo Limmer, a
- 16:36Speaker 1: second year offensive lineman, and he just got bull rushed,
- 16:40Speaker 1: sort of pushed into the lap and that allowed Jordan
- 16:43Speaker 1: Davis to shoot through the a gap, make the play
- 16:46Speaker 1: and pick up the football and take it the rest
- 16:48Speaker 1: of the way. But he mentioned that, you know, the
- 16:52Speaker 1: Joe Pinunzio, one of the Special Teams coaches, he meets
- 16:54Speaker 1: with them and they are able to assess where those
- 16:57Speaker 1: deficiencies may lie. So he gave credit to the coaches.
- 17:01Speaker 1: But you could see how proud Jalen Carter was of
- 17:03Speaker 1: Jordan Davis, who's been his teammate for about five or
- 17:06Speaker 1: six years now, they've they worked alongside each other, they're
- 17:09Speaker 1: in the position room together, and I think that that
- 17:11Speaker 1: was sort of embodied the work that Jordan Davis has
- 17:15Speaker 1: put in. Not a surprise to his teammates. He's it's
- 17:18Speaker 1: a surprise to those maybe on the outside who needed
- 17:21Speaker 1: to see it before they believed. I guess the building momentum,
- 17:25Speaker 1: the hype train, if you will, surrounding Jordan Davis entering
- 17:29Speaker 1: this season.
- 17:30Speaker 2: But his teammates said, nothing's changed. This is Jordan Davis.
- 17:34Speaker 1: This is what he's been doing, and it's good to
- 17:36Speaker 1: see the work sort of manifest in those big plays.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I don't think it's lost on Jordan Davis that he's
- 17:42Speaker 1: been gonna have to play more snaps this year and
- 17:44Speaker 1: be counted on. He has leadership qualities that are inherent.
- 17:48Speaker 1: I've mentioned that on the podcast before, and so we'll
- 17:52Speaker 1: see what this all means. Because it took everybody to
- 17:57Speaker 1: get this win for the Eagles. So I think that
- 18:00Speaker 1: they've done a nice job of being resilient coming back
- 18:04Speaker 1: from nineteen points in the first half in the second half,
- 18:09Speaker 1: and sa Kwon Barkley said, look, we all made real
- 18:11Speaker 1: shitty plays, but we all made good ones too, and
