Latest / The Rand Report: Sports / Preseason Tape Don’t Lie: Allen, Tua, and the Real Cuts
Transcript
- 0:04Preseason tape doesn't lie. It just hasn't finished
- 0:08talking yet. Josh Allen is already connecting
- 0:11with DJ Moore. Keon Coleman scored the first
- 0:14touchdown at the new Highmark Stadium. Tua Tagovailoa's
- 0:17Atlanta debut was rough. Rookies are flashing,
- 0:21depth players are making statements, and the
- 0:23soft narratives are already forming. Welcome
- 0:26to the Rand Report. I'm Jim Rand. NFL Preseason
- 0:29Week 1 is in full swing. Games are rolling across
- 0:32the country, results are coming in by the hour,
- 0:35and the only thing that matters right now is
- 0:37who is competing when the lights are on and the
- 0:39roster cuts are real. Let's start in Buffalo,
- 0:42brand new Highmark Stadium, first preseason home
- 0:45game for the Bills. Josh Allen is under center
- 0:48for limited series and the offense looks sharp
- 0:50right out of the gate. On the first play from
- 0:53scrimmage, he hits Khalil Shakir for a chunk
- 0:55gain down the field. Then DJ Moore, the new number
- 0:58one receiver the bill's acquired from the Chicago
- 1:00Bears, gets his first official touch as a bill
- 1:03and turns it into 33 yards. Later in the same
- 1:06sequence, Keon Coleman hauls in a touchdown.
- 1:09That is the first score in the new building.
- 1:11Allen's eyes light up on the sideline watching
- 1:14the play develop. That is not just a highlight
- 1:16reel for social media. That is early chemistry
- 1:19under live pressure against an opposing defense.
- 1:22Allen does not need preseason snaps to prove
- 1:24he is still elite, but the supporting cast does.
- 1:27More needed to show he can still separate and
- 1:29finish after a disappointing statistical year
- 1:32in Chicago. Coleman needed to show he can be
- 1:34reliable in the red zone and in scramble drills
- 1:37when the pocket breaks down. Early returns look
- 1:39promising. The Bills are treating these snaps
- 1:42like they matter because the depth chart is not
- 1:44finished and the competition for the final 53
- 1:46spots is very real. Now shift south to Atlanta.
- 1:51Two Otagovailoas first action in a Falcons uniform.
- 1:55Two drives. Three of five for 22 yards. A fumbled
- 1:58shotgun snap that set an early tone. 24 total
- 2:02yards on eight plays. The Broncos defense was
- 2:04physical and disruptive. The Falcons starters
- 2:07around him were limited by design. Drake London
- 2:10barely played. Bijan Robinson did not play at
- 2:13all. Michael Penick Jr. is still not full go
- 2:15after knee surgery and remains a question mark
- 2:18for the competition. Still, the tape is the tape.
- 2:21Tua looked uncomfortable in the pocket. The timing
- 2:24with the receivers was off. The pocket presence
- 2:26was not sharp under pressure. This is a quarterback
- 2:29competition, not a coronation. Kevin Stefanski
- 2:32needs clean looks at who can operate the offense
- 2:34when the defense is coming. Early returns from
- 2:37Tua are not the ones Atlanta hoped to see. That
- 2:40does not mean the season is over in August. It
- 2:42means the competition is real and the soft narrative
- 2:45that Tua simply walks into the building and takes
- 2:47the job without challenge is already under stress.
- 2:51This is exactly what pre -season is for. Not
- 2:54final scores that nobody remembers in October.
- 2:57Not fantasy projections built on two series of
- 2:59limited snaps. It is for evaluating who competes
- 3:02when the pads are on, the crowd is watching,
- 3:05and the stakes are actual roster spots. Rookies
- 3:08across the league are getting their first real
- 3:10opportunities. Some are flashing and forcing
- 3:12coaches to move them up the depth chart. Some
- 3:15are learning the hard way that NFL speed and
- 3:17complexity are different from anything they faced
- 3:19in college. Depth players are making plays that
- 3:22force the coaches to keep them when the cut list
- 3:24gets written. Injuries are already thinning rooms
- 3:27and changing plans. Nick Scouton for the Panthers
- 3:29is out for the season with a knee injury. That
- 3:32immediately changes the edge rush picture for
- 3:34Carolina and opens opportunities for others.
- 3:37Other players around the league are dealing with
- 3:39hamstrings, ankles, and the usual training camp
- 3:41wear that turns into pre -season caution. Roster
- 3:44cuts are coming soon. The 90 -man roster becomes
- 3:4753. Every missed tackle, Every dropped ball,
- 3:51every mental error in these games gets logged
- 3:53and reviewed. The soft narratives, he's a camp
- 3:56standout, he's the future of the franchise, this
- 3:58trade was a steal on day one, get tested against
- 4:01actual live competition against people who are
- 4:04fighting for their jobs. Josh Allen connecting
- 4:06with Morin Coleman is a positive data point.
- 4:09Tua's limited production is a data point that
- 4:11has to be answered in the next two weeks. Rookie
- 4:14running backs averaging six yards a carry against
- 4:16live defense is a data point. Defensive backs
- 4:19making plays in the secondary and forcing turnovers
- 4:22is a data point. The ones who treat these games
- 4:24like they matter are usually the ones who survive
- 4:26the cut. The ones who treat them like meaningless
- 4:29exhibitions are the ones who get surprised when
- 4:31the final roster drops and their name is not
- 4:33on it. There is always a temptation to overreact
- 4:38to preseason. One good series becomes, he's back
- 4:41to form. One bad series becomes, he's done and
- 4:44should be cut. That is noise and it is usually
- 4:46wrong. What is not noise is the competition level
- 4:49itself, who is physical at the point of contact,
- 4:52who is decisive with the ball in his hands, who
- 4:55is prepared and knows the assignment, who is
- 4:57making the people around them better in real
- 4:59time instead of waiting for someone else to make
- 5:01a play. Buffalo is showing early chemistry on
- 5:04offense in a brand new stadium with new weapons.
- 5:06The connection between Allen and Moore is the
- 5:08kind of thing that can change the ceiling of
- 5:10an offense if it holds up. Coleman's touchdown
- 5:13in scramble conditions shows the kind of playmaking
- 5:15that wins games when the structure breaks down.
- 5:18Those are the details that matter more than the
- 5:20final score of a preseason game. Atlanta is showing
- 5:22that the quarterback situation is not settled
- 5:24and will require more evaluation. Tua has the
- 5:28experience and the arm talent. He also has a
- 5:30history of dealing with pressure and timing issues
- 5:32when the protection is not perfect. Stefansky's
- 5:35staff will use the next two weeks to get more
- 5:37clean looks and more data. That is the right
- 5:39approach. Rushing to declare a winner in Week
- 5:421 of the pre -season is how teams create long
- 5:44-term problems. Across the league, depth battles
- 5:47at every position are being decided one series
- 5:49at a time under the lights. Running backs are
- 5:52fighting for carries, receivers are fighting
- 5:54for targets, linebackers and defensive backs
- 5:56are fighting for snaps in the rotation, special
- 5:59teams' contributions are being weighed more heavily
- 6:01than most fans realize. The players who understand
- 6:04that every snap is an audition are the ones who
- 6:06usually find a way onto the final roster. Preseason
- 6:09does not crown champions. It does not hand out
- 6:12trophies. It reveals who is ready to compete
- 6:15for a job when the real games start in September.
- 6:18It shows who has prepared, who has the toughness
- 6:20to respond to adversity, and who treats the evaluation
- 6:23period with the seriousness it deserves. That
- 6:26is the only standard that matters right now.
- 6:28The soft narratives will keep coming from every
- 6:30direction. They always do. The tape will keep
- 6:33talking. It always does. Pay attention to the
- 6:36ones who are actually competing when it counts.
- 6:39Those are the players who will still be standing
- 6:40when the cuts are made and the regular season
- 6:42begins. This has been The Rand Report. I'm Jim
- 6:46Rand. Less hype. More truth. Until next time,
- 6:52keep competing.
