- 0:07The Detroit Tigers faced the Texas Rangers at Arlington Stadium for a Tuesday night game on April 11, 1978.
- 0:13Detroit had some success in the early 1970s under manager Billy Martin.
- 0:17But following his departure after the 1973 season, the Tigers hired Ralph Hauk.
- 0:22Unfortunately, that only allowed the team to finish four consecutive seasons under 500.
- 0:27The Tigers finally decided to tap into their farm system.
- 0:30In 1978 marked the rookie seasons of Lou Whitaker, Ellen Trammell, Lance Parrish, and Jack Morris.
- 0:36Texas was coming off a successful 94-68 record in 1977, finishing in second place behind the 102-win Kansas City Royals.
- 0:44Texas, however, went through four managers in 1977, finally deciding on Billy Hunter to lead the team for the 1978 season.
- 0:52This audio recording is from the Detroit Radio broadcast featuring announcers Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey.
- 0:58Greetings everybody, the Tigers in Texas tonight. Paul Carey is here. My name is Ernie Harwell.
- 1:04It's the first of a two-game set in Arlington, Texas between the Tigers and the Rangers.
- 1:09Each team is starting today in a tie in its respective division.
- 1:14Dave Rosemond, the young man from Michigan, will test his arm tonight.
- 1:19He won 15 and lost seven last year, and his pitching rival will be right-hander Doc Medich,
- 1:25who had a combined 12 and 7 record last year with Oakland, Seattle, and the New York Mets,
- 1:31and then was signed as a free agent by the Rangers back in last November.
- 1:36The weather seems to be excellent. We've got a little bit of a breeze that is blowing in from the outfield toward home plate.
- 1:43And we'll be back in one minute with the starting lineup.
- 1:47Plymouth announces a breakthrough in American automobiles, new Plymouth Horizon,
- 1:53the car you can drive in comfort and confidence on any kind of road.
- 1:57Horizon can give you superb traction and stability because it's the first American-made car of its size with front-wheel drive.
- 2:08Horizon is loaded with standard features like rack and pinion steering, front disc brakes,
- 2:13AM radio, white wall radio tires, and front bucket seats.
- 2:17And Horizon has improved mileage figures on cars produced since 1976.
- 2:23The EPA estimated a manual transmission Horizon without optional air conditioning and power steering by 41 miles per gallon-hour in 27 cities.
- 2:32Your mileage may differ, yet Horizon is base price to just $3,706, excluding taxes and destination charges.
- 2:40Anytime you want to go anywhere, Horizon can handle it.
- 2:46Now at your great Detroit Chrysler Plymouth dealer.
- 2:55Well, the pitch is warming up in the bullfinch right now. Paul Carey's all warmed up.
- 2:59He's had two dogs in the woods, and he's ready to go.
- 3:03All right, Ernie, thank you very much. I won't tell anybody about that Spanish food you had earlier today.
- 3:09Good evening from Arlington Stadium here in Arlington, Texas, the Metro Texas area, Fort Worth and Dallas.
- 3:16Well, we've had some renovation take place since Ernie and I last visited with the Tigers at mid-year a season ago.
- 3:24They have added some upper deck here behind the home plate area, adding to the capacity some 5,000-foot seats.
- 3:34And they have built some special private boxes as well beyond the press box area.
- 3:40Well, the Tigers are beginning the first road trip of the season, two games here in Texas and then three in Toronto
- 3:46before coming back home next Monday for a two-game set with the Chicago White Sox.
- 3:51Both these ball clubs have taken two out of three thus far, winning their season opening series.
- 3:58The Tigers are of course taking two of three from Toronto, and the Rangers played the Yankees free game starting on Saturday
- 4:06and capped it off last night with a victory five to two.
- 4:10The Tigers flew down last night after beating Cincinnati five to three in a stand-lot benefit game.
- 4:17They arrived about 2.30 Detroit time, 1.30 down here in Texas to get set for this ball game tonight.
- 4:24Young Dave Roseman, who won 15 times last year as the rookie pitcher of the year in the American League,
- 4:30gets his first outing of the season against a very tough Texas Ranger lineup that is certainly much improved over a year ago.
- 4:40One of the best set lineups in the business.
- 4:43The depth might be a bit of a problem, but Billy Hunter has experience on the bench at least.
- 4:49Going against the Tigers tonight, one of the two new acquisitions among the starting pitchers for the Rangers,
- 4:55George Doc Medich, who went into the free agent market last November and wound up signing a contract
- 5:03of a million dollars worth four years with the Texas Rangers.
- 5:07The umpires are making their way to home plate right now, and they'll be meeting with the managers that swap the starting lineups,
- 5:13and let's pause right here for station identification.
- 5:16This is the Detroit Tiger baseball network.
- 5:19At 8.30, you're listening to Tiger baseball on WJR Detroit.
- 5:23And in Atlanta in the first period, Detroit Red Wings three, the Flames no score on power play goals by Dale McCourt and two by Ned Nedomansky.
- 5:37Now the starting lineup for the Detroit Tigers against the right-hander Doc Medich, leading off playing in center field, will be Ron LaFleur.
- 5:45Batting second, they target third baseman Phil Mankowski.
- 5:49Hitting third, the Tigers designated batter Rusty Staub.
- 5:53Batting fourth, first baseman Jason Thompson.
- 5:57Hitting fifth, in left field, will be Steve Kent.
- 6:01Batting sixth, the right fielder Tim Corcoran.
- 6:05Hitting seventh, doing the catching, Milk May.
- 6:09Batting eighth, the second base, Lou Whitaker.
- 6:13Batting ninth, shortstop Alan Trammell.
- 6:16The Tiger lineup has LaFleur leading off in center, followed by Mankowski at third, Staub the DH, Thompson at first, Kemp in left, Corcoran in right, May behind the plate, Whitaker at second, and Trammell at short.
- 6:30For the Rangers against Rosie tonight, leading off playing at first base, will be Mike Hargrove.
- 6:37Batting second, the veteran shortstop Bert Campaneran.
- 6:41Hitting third, in left field, Al Oliver.
- 6:45Batting clean up, the newly acquired designated batter for the Rangers, Richie Zisk.
- 6:51Hitting fifth, at third base, will be Toby Herra.
- 6:55Batting sixth, in the right field, Claddell Washington.
- 7:00Batting seventh, playing center field, Juan Beníquez.
- 7:05Batting eighth, the second baseman, Bump Wills.
- 7:09Batting ninth, catcher Jim Sundberg.
- 7:13The Ranger lineup again has Hargrove leading off at first base, followed by Campaneras at short, Oliver in left, Zisk the DH, Herra at third, Washington in right, Beníquez in center, Wills at second, and Sundberg catching.
- 7:29The meeting at home plate is an extra long one here. What were the first visits of the Tigers to Arlington Stadium for the spring, and Ralph out going thoroughly over the ground riddles with the umpiring crew.
- 7:42Behind the plate, it will be the second year umpire, Durwood Merrill.
- 7:46Out at first base, the crew chief, Marty Springstead.
- 7:50At second, Larry Barnett.
- 7:52And at third, Jim Evans.
- 7:56They have some good crowds down here at Arlington Stadium over the first three games with the Yankees series, as might be expected at the beginning of the season and with the Yankees in town.
- 8:07They are above last year's pace at this time.
- 8:11Crowd tonight is going to be a little more difficult for any of us to estimate it here because of the addition of the upper deck.
- 8:17It's over our head, and we aren't able to see how many people are there.
- 8:21But there are a lot of MPC Tigers, and I think they threw a little over 13,000 in the ground game last night, and I would say it would be in the area of maybe 10,000 to 12,000 here tonight.
- 8:33The Rangers have made their way out to their defensive positions on the mound.
- 8:41And a special cheer has gone up in left field for Al Oliver, who has fast become a favorite here in Arlington, having played only three games, but a Brazil out there has a lot of fans in the league series.
- 8:55Now our national anthem.
- 8:57The Rangers are going to be a little more difficult for any of us to estimate it here because of the upper deck.
- 9:11Crowd tonight is going to be a little more difficult for any of us to estimate it here because of the upper deck.
- 9:27The Rangers are going to be a little more difficult for any of us to estimate it here because of the upper deck.
- 9:41Crowd tonight is going to be a little more difficult for any of us to estimate it here because of the upper deck.
- 10:09Now while Doc Medich makes his final warm-up slaps, we'll pause for these messages.
- 10:17No charge checking.
- 10:19Other banks make it tougher.
- 10:21City National makes it easier.
- 10:24Now while other banks are increasing the minimum savings balance you need for no charge checking, CNB lowers it with combo checking.
- 10:33That's right, some banks are raising the minimum savings requirement to a whopping $500, but CNB lowers it to $200.
- 10:50A $200 minimum balance in savings for a $200 minimum balance in your checking account that you check without charge.
- 10:58$200 in savings or $200 in checking, and you write all the checks you want without charge.
- 11:05All your checks without charge.
- 11:08Other banks make no charge checking tougher.
- 11:10Combo checking makes it easier.
- 11:20This is Jim Garrett.
- 11:21Detroit's buildings and safety engineers have answers to your energy saving questions.
- 11:27Call 224-3181 for information.
- 11:35This is a big night certainly for both of our clubs for the two young pitchers.
- 11:40The youngest, Dave Rosema, making his first outing of the season.
- 11:44Dave jumped a step behind the other Tigers starters because of a little spate of stiff shoulder down in the spring training early.
- 11:53But Dave has turned in six innings worth in his last two outings in Exhibition Flyheave.
- 11:59Last appeared, you will recall, at Columbus, Ohio last Tuesday when the Tigers were headed south to open the season in Detroit.
- 12:07Dave making his first outing of the season here tonight.
- 12:10The young man on the mound making sure everything is ready.
- 12:12He was doing a lot of groundwork out there on the landing area of the mound is Doc Medich.
- 12:19A man who everybody felt would not at this point in time in 1978 be playing baseball, but he'd be occupied as a doctor.
- 12:28He has his degree.
- 12:31He's a graduate of the medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, but Doc is continuing on in baseball thanks to the four year million dollar contract property him by the Rangers.
- 12:41And he wants three agents to come from the bubble of last year.
- 12:44He's ready to go and at the plate is round the court.
- 12:47Here's Tony Harwell.
- 12:49Thanks Paul.
- 12:50We're set to go.
- 12:51The right hand to Medich in the motion.
- 12:53And LaFoint, a bounding ball to second.
- 12:56Wills has it, the flip to first.
- 12:58And he is out at first base.
- 13:01We had to wait.
- 13:02It was a collision.
- 13:03And the question was did Hargo stay on the bag?
- 13:06And the umpire down there, Marty Trink said he did.
- 13:09So it is one away.
- 13:11A fourth throw by Wills.
- 13:12And the long play pass to the face, putting Hargo back and into the path of the oncoming LaFour.
- 13:18But LaFour is out, run up and run down.
- 13:22Brown went up there hitting 308.
- 13:24You still meant Kelsey batting 3-3-3 against the right hand of Medich.
- 13:31Doctor Dibbous, strike call.
- 13:34Medich is now 30 years old.
- 13:36He got his start with the Yankees back in 72.
- 13:40And went to Pittsburgh, then the Mets.
- 13:43Oakland and Seattle all last year.
- 13:45There is a ball low to the left hand batting Phil Mankowski.
- 13:50Just underway in Texas, an old score.
- 13:52That's the style we'll go back next.
- 13:55Medich checking his time with his fine young catcher, Thunberg.
- 14:00There is a count on the foul, back of the plate.
- 14:03Locking with a hunt of the Texas on it for what was before the game I have to know.
- 14:07What kind of a spring?
- 14:09Medich had, he said, very bad.
- 14:11He said, I hope he pitches a lot better than he did this spring.
- 14:15It's the motion of the post.
- 14:17Long arm line, grand left fielder.
- 14:19The being field is fueled by Oliver on one chip.
- 14:22And rifle back into the middle of the diamond.
- 14:26Paul George, a man of honor, but already has won a lot of friends out there in left field.
- 14:30In fact, they've got a sign up out there now hanging over one of the barriers that says, Al Pound.
- 14:38Here's Rusty Starb at the plate with a man on and a man out.
- 14:48I thought they'd have Oliver's followers.
- 14:51That's even better.
- 14:54Rusty batting 385, strike call, fast call over.
- 15:01How about that?
- 15:07So the first and back in time Mankowski.
- 15:13Medich, the big right-handed, sets the deal.
- 15:15Here's a ball outside the fast ball wide to Rusty.
- 15:20One and one the count on him.
- 15:22Starb has five for 13.
- 15:30Now the stuff again.
- 15:32And he delivers.
- 15:33Rusty takes it wide again.
- 15:35Same spot as that last one.
- 15:39Medich, basically a fast 12-50.
- 15:42He's got a curve in his flier.
- 15:45Sundberg was telling us he also has a pretty good change-up.
- 15:49But he has never really reached the potential they expected of him.
- 15:5519 game winner, one year with the Yanks, but he has not been up to that in the last several seasons.
- 16:02Here's the stretch and the pitch.
- 16:09Swung on a bounding ball up the middle, Wills dug it,
- 16:12slipped it over to Schaffener, brought it first, double play.
- 16:16A beautiful double play to Rob Starb over here and then turned it into the inning-ending play.
- 16:23No runs drawn, one hit, no errors, and nobody left.
- 16:28Here's the half-inning Tigers having Texas coming to bat.
- 16:33Little Caesar pizza, tastiest in town.
- 16:37A winner anyway slightly, all the way around.
- 16:42The carry of the good and hot, late for nighttime snacks.
- 16:46I sat down at Little Caesar's, just ordered and made out.
- 16:51Pizza lovers, right now you can get a large round pizza from Little Caesar's with anything you want on it for the price of an identical small pizza.
- 16:59That's right, a large round pizza with all the trimmings for the price of an identical small.
- 17:05Just bring in the special coupon you'll find in your local newspaper or TV book and they'll do the rest.
- 17:11Mouth-watering goodness at a special low price.
- 17:14No wonder pizza lovers everywhere love Little Caesar's pizza.
- 17:18A winner anyway you slice it.
- 17:21There's a sandwich for you, it's a winner-competitive.
- 17:26Little Caesar, it's a little favorite pizza, a great piece of cheese for you.
- 17:34Now the Texans coming to bat, they'll be facing Dave Rosmer, the 21-year-old right-hander from Grand Rapids.
- 17:50Rosmer, the most effective Tiger pitcher last year, won 15 and lost 7.
- 17:55He was the Tiger Rookie of the Year, as voted by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters.
- 18:00Now for the American League Rookie Pitcher of the Year and a member of the top American League All-Star team, Rookie All-Star team.
- 18:11He'll be facing Mike Hargrove, the first baseman.
- 18:18Very fine leadoff man for Texas, batting an even 300 right now, 3 for 10.
- 18:29He walks a good deal, he's very selective in his pitches.
- 18:34Mankowski wadded the bag on Mike.
- 18:41Steps out, goes through that routine with the glove and the cap, et cetera.
- 18:46Now weights and the pitch on the way, taken for ball, oh.
- 18:49May is doing the catching for the Tigers.
- 18:52Mankowski at third, Chameleon short, Whitaker at second, Thompson at first, Kemp and left.
- 18:58Center fielder LaFleur, the right fielder Corcoran.
- 19:02No score, first inning in Arlington.
- 19:05Here's a strike, it's got the outside corner.
- 19:10Tomorrow night it'll be Mark Svidrich against John Metlock.
- 19:14Final game of the two-game set, then the Tigers move on to Toronto to help the Blue Jays open their season on Friday.
- 19:21Bonding brought it slowly toward first, Thompson's left it, touch it, the road, McCovering and they get it.
- 19:28The first baseman to the pitcher, one up and one down.
- 19:34Now here's one of the veterans on this Texas Ranger team, Bert Kaepernick.
- 19:40Kaepernick has lost his stuff, it's all, before the time, but he can still go get him.
- 19:46And he's still a dangerous man on the bases.
- 19:52Thirty-six year old right-hand batting infielder, Buntzabald, it is in front of the plate,
- 19:57picked up by May, gunned over the first, but now ruled a foul by the plate umpire Merrill.
- 20:08Al Oliver waiting at the on-back circle.
- 20:13The Tigers took the seasonal series from the Tigers last year, 8-2.
- 20:23Tigers won only one game here and only one at Tigers Stadium.
- 20:27Buntzabald, Allen, and Kaepernick, one-and-one they count on him.
- 20:35This is Kaepernick's 14th year in the American League.
- 20:39And Rosmer, winds and piquies, wing and a miss.
- 20:45Gets that one to the mid of May.
- 20:49Breeze is coming in from the outfield, just about straight away set it toward home plate tonight.
- 20:54It's a very pleasant evening here in Texas.
- 20:56We hope the weather is good wherever you might be tuned in.
- 20:59Here it comes, he takes a wide curve, two-two to count on Kaepernick.
- 21:0830 down each line in this part, 400 straight away set it, 370 in the power alleys.
- 21:15Wing and a miss, breaking ball got him, and Kaepernick is out on strike.
- 21:20That's two down, nobody on.
- 21:24Here's Al Oliver.
- 21:28Walmer Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder.
- 21:31He has four hits and twelve chips, that's the most hits on this game.
- 21:36No home runs and no RBI's, three singles and a double.
- 21:40Left hand batting Oliver at the plate.
- 21:43Where's the number zero?
- 21:45There's a strike call, Rosmer curved him.
- 21:50Oliver came here and made a big, blind-loving deal.
- 21:55Wing and a miss, Rosie changed up, and Oliver got out in front of that one.
- 22:01Last year he batted 308 for the Pirates.
- 22:04Had 19 home runs and drove home 82.
- 22:09Left hand batter standing deep, feet close together, swings, bounding ball to second.
- 22:14Riddicka backs up, Bobbelsitt picks it up, well to Thompson is wide, and he is out.
- 22:19Thompson held his foot on the line, there'll be a little discussion about that one, but it is out number three.
- 22:25They go down one, two, three in the first base.
- 22:29Riddicka here for one, the Rage is nothing, the Tiger is nothing.
- 22:35You're trying to get on base in the LeBats baseball trivia game, and here's the pitch.
- 22:41Who is the oldest man to win a batting championship?
- 22:45Think it over and pour yourself a cool, refreshing LeBats beer.
- 22:50The answer, the all-time great Doug Williams.
- 23:00Williams at age 39 hit 388 to capture the American League title for the Boston Red Sox,
- 23:06and at 40 he also was batting king as he led the league with a free 28 mark in 1951.
- 23:13Boat baseball calls for great beer, LeBats. Call for LeBats, brewed in Canada since 1828,
- 23:21distributed by LeBats and Coors, Inc., Buffalo, New York.
- 23:24For beer at its finest, get your hands on LeBats.
- 23:27It's Canada's number one beer, as fresh and crisp as where it comes from.
- 23:34Radio 76 salutes Detroit Pistons captain Bob Lemire,
- 23:37who recently awarded the 1978 Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for his outstanding humanitarian achievements in our community.
- 23:52Doc Medich, the right-hander, he really is a doctor, he's a resident in general surgery
- 24:00at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, following in the footsteps of the hero of the
- 24:00Hillybush Perfect.
- 24:10And that would be Dr. Bobby Brown, who used to do his playing with the New York Yankees.
- 24:17It was Mr. Corbett's boyhood hero.
- 24:19Here's Thompson coming to the bat now to try to get it going with the Tigers.
- 24:23Against Doc Medich.
- 24:25Jansen hitting 286, that's 4 for 14.
- 24:33Here's the wind up on the pitch and he takes the strike call.
- 24:37Roof top Thompson, but they don't have any roof tops in their territory.
- 24:41This is all about following back to get it on the roof.
- 24:44I don't think they have one up here, up this way either, do they?
- 24:47There's a ball low, just stands and no roof anywhere.
- 24:51We call them big sky.
- 24:56One and one, the count on Jansen.
- 24:58No score, second inning.
- 25:01Swing and a high fly ball, short net setter.
- 25:05Oliver coming in, Kapaner is going back.
- 25:07Oliver has it.
- 25:11Well, everybody could get under that when it was so high.
- 25:14Now Medich will pitch to Steve Kemp, who's hitting 444.
- 25:21There have been a lot of medical doctors who've played professional baseball.
- 25:25Hubb Pruitt was one pitch to the old Brownies back in the 20s,
- 25:29and he was, as you remember, a jinx to Babe Ruth.
- 25:33In 1922 he struck out Ruth 22 times in that one season.
- 25:41Here's Kemp at the plate now.
- 25:43No score, we're in the second inning in Texas.
- 25:46It is a strike call.
- 25:48Medich got his slow breaking ball over.
- 25:59Ball outside.
- 26:01One and one, the count.
- 26:02The Yankees at one time had a battery of doctors back in the early 1900s.
- 26:06Mike Powers was the catcher.
- 26:08Jim Newton was the pitcher.
- 26:10Both doctors. Here's the ball high.
- 26:13Two and one.
- 26:18And there was Doc Minkle with the Tigers.
- 26:21And Hillsdale.
- 26:23Here's a strike on the outside corner.
- 26:36Here's a windup by Medich and a pitch on the way.
- 26:39Here's a strike.
- 26:42Now Kemp looks at the breaking ball and is called out on strike.
- 26:45That's the first strike out by Medich.
- 26:49Jim Corkland, Corky will be the batter.
- 26:51He is the 0 for 3 for the young season.
- 26:55He's walked three times, but he'll still have a hit.
- 27:04That feels straight up on him.
- 27:10Tigers have had one hit so far, single by Mankowski in the opening inning.
- 27:13He was a race in a double play.
- 27:15There's a ball outside.
- 27:16It's a beautiful play by Wills, one of the outstanding defensive plays we've seen so far in the young season.
- 27:23Deep at second, took a hit away from Staub, flipped to Kampenaris.
- 27:26They turned it into two.
- 27:28Korky looks there's a charge going in.
- 27:41In field back except for the third strike of Toby Hara.
- 27:45Now the 2-0 delivery.
- 27:47He takes strike on the outside corner.
- 27:50That's him, the fastball.
- 27:56Still waiting on deck.
- 27:58The Tigers trying to get it going against Doc Medich.
- 28:00No score, second inning in Texas.
- 28:04Bounding ball to first.
- 28:05It is a foul just outside the bag.
- 28:07A diving, rolling effort by Hardwell.
- 28:10Ball foul anyway.
- 28:15Paul Moore is the Saturday edition editor.
- 28:19The Fort Worth Star Telegram is out here.
- 28:21He grew up in Huntington Woods.
- 28:23Mark Chigune wants to send the best wishes to all the folks back home.
- 28:33Two-two, the count on Corcoran.
- 28:36No score, second inning.
- 28:38Wind up the pitch.
- 28:40It's a wide one, full count.
- 28:46Kevin Hutter, it's a big question mark on his team as a pitching.
- 28:52That's where the bullpen.
- 28:55Now Medich ready to go to work again.
- 28:57Full count, better bring.
- 28:58Swung on, hit the left, base hit.
- 29:01Oliver feels the ball and that will be the second hit by the Tigers,
- 29:04the first of the year for Corcoran.
- 29:06And Milt May will be stepping up.
- 29:09Milt with two for four for the Chief.
- 29:11I asked Billy about a report in the New York paper.
- 29:13I said I saw a report in the New York paper that the Rangers could have
- 29:18made for Sparky Lyle or Claudel Washington.
- 29:23And he said, well, I don't know about that, but he said,
- 29:25I'll tell you one thing, I might report to Sparky to the commissioner
- 29:30for tampering with my owner.
- 29:36That'd be a switch wouldn't it?
- 29:41That on first, two down, no score, here's Milt May at the plate.
- 29:49There's a ball outside.
- 29:51I have high regard for Claudel, but I'd make that deal anytime
- 29:54if I were the Rangers and could do it.
- 30:02No score, second inning, Tigers with a man on it, two down.
- 30:06Flip over to first and back in time is Corcoran.
- 30:10I thought the Rangers would have an interest in Ken Holtzman.
- 30:14Clay Carroll has been working out down here with them.
- 30:18There's a bounding foul ball over toward the dugout.
- 30:22The Rangers are supposed to send a fit Hudson up to take a look at Holtzman's
- 30:27tricks tonight, and I notice he's not sitting anyway.
- 30:30Catfish started tonight.
- 30:32Catfish, what's that score over there?
- 30:34We've got Vince Desmond keeping score for it.
- 30:37Little rough catfish is out of him, Milwaukee leads the Yankees 6-1 in the fourth.
- 30:42There's a line drive basehead in the corner off the bat of May.
- 30:45Holtzman turning heading for third.
- 30:47Up to the ball is Washington, fires it into Bump Wells, and the Tigers have runners
- 30:51at the corners and two down and a score of five.
- 30:54Second inning and the batter will be Whitaker.
- 30:57May ripped a line drive hit into right field.
- 31:00A three-tiger hit, they've all been solid singles.
- 31:08Great Blue Whitaker, he's won himself a lot of fans already at Tiger Stadium.
- 31:13He's fighting 286 at two to seven.
- 31:16One double and one single, and one RBI steps up.
- 31:21They must have over-sprinkled a mound or something because Maddich had some trouble
- 31:25before the game began.
- 31:27Down with a tongue depressor to try to wipe away some mud from his spikes now.
- 31:32Now he's ready to go.
- 31:33The pitch to Whitaker is very high at fastball.
- 31:36In the Toronto series, the Blue Jays outfielders were playing very shallow on Whitaker,
- 31:41especially the left-fielders.
- 31:43In fact, the Tigers were amazed that the left-fielder was that shallow.
- 31:47Notice Oliver is in more normal depth against him in left.
- 31:51If they drive that way, but it'll go foul back of the seat.
- 31:55Two and one, the count on Lou.
- 31:57So far, May's been the only one to pull, Maddich.
- 32:06The man on first is May, the man on third is Clarkland.
- 32:10The Tigers have a scoring chance, two down, second inning.
- 32:14Fastball moved him back.
- 32:16Two and one, they count now.
- 32:22Maddich is 6'5 and weighs around 230.
- 32:29Bring right-handed steps, kicks, some of his.
- 32:31Whitaker swings, foul out of play.
- 32:34Got a fastball in tight on him, a hard pitch to handle.
- 32:45Hargrove, the holding on the bag with May, that gives Whitaker a little space
- 32:49if he can pull the ball between Wilton Hargrove.
- 32:55Now the stretch again, we went under two, two delivery to Lou.
- 32:59That's him off and bad fastball under the chin.
- 33:04Maddich is 6'3 against the Tigers in his lifetime,
- 33:08and this is his first appearance for the Rangers for this season.
- 33:17Matlack and Sederich will be the pitchers here tomorrow night.
- 33:20We hope you'll join us for that one.
- 33:22Now the 3-2 delivery on the way.
- 33:24He walks him, the Tigers have loaded the bases.
- 33:28And the number nine batter, Alan Samuels, will try to do something about it.
- 33:35Samuels with one hit and three chips so far this season.
- 33:39So with two down, two singles on the walk have loaded the bases.
- 33:50Alan, right-hand batter against the right-hand pitching of Maddich.
- 33:55That's the young man who now makes his home in San Diego.
- 34:02Southern League's most valuable player I feel.
- 34:06Playing back with two down, no score, bases loaded, two out.
- 34:10Swing, parable, backfield, it comes Washington, he's there, drops it for the up.
- 34:14He was playing in shallow and the ball didn't get much wood on it,
- 34:18and Washington pucks it out of the air.
- 34:22No run, two hits, a walk, no errors, three Tigers are stranded at the end of one-and-a-half hitting.
- 34:29Detroit nothing, Rangers nothing.
- 34:32BI-P il leонь les talented Peninsula
- 34:39Parathon roll, too much dough.
- 34:44Rangers coming to Matdoggins today of Rosemar who sent them down in a 1-2-3 fashion of the
- 35:04opening inning and they were sent up to a designated hitter, Ricky Fisk, who started
- 35:09off followed by Toby Harrah and then Claudel Washington.
- 35:14Fisk wanted several additions to this club.
- 35:18Makes the folks down here in Texas think that their Rangers might win the division in the
- 35:24American League.
- 35:27Fisk batting 455 at 5 for 11.
- 35:33Fisk batting has a couple of home runs and leads the team in RBI's with 5.
- 35:40Ricky Fisk is the play.
- 35:44Big strong right hand batter, they got him in the white socks.
- 35:47He takes a breaking ball over first strike.
- 35:50Batted 290 last year and had 30 home runs, 101 in the RBI department.
- 35:59There's a strike called, another slider from Rosie.
- 36:05Fisk a graduate of Seton Hall.
- 36:10And all those major league seasons with Pittsburgh until last year when he was with Chicago.
- 36:16Takes a half cut but holds off and it is out of the strike zone, one and two on Fisk.
- 36:22No runs and three hits for the Tigers, no runs and no hits for the Rangers.
- 36:26Second inning in Texas.
- 36:30Here it comes, he looks in too close with a fast ball.
- 36:33That was not much out of the strike zone, 2-2 now on Fisk.
- 36:39Toby Harrow waiting at the on deck circle.
- 36:45Fly ball, it's a deep left center field.
- 36:48It may get up the alley, it's jumped off the wall, fielded by Kemp.
- 36:52It's a throw into the infield and it'll be a double for Ripley.
- 36:56And up the alley, double the left center.
- 36:59And the 4-12 to Harrow bats now, that's a ball at great distance,
- 37:02take the notification.
- 37:04This is the Detroit Tigers, baseball and at first.
- 37:07WJR Detroit in game one of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Detroit 4, Atlanta nothing.
- 37:13On power play goals by McCourt, two by Nedamansky and a short handed goal by Hextall.
- 37:18At the end of the first period of play, Red Wings 4, Atlanta 0.
- 37:24Here's Toby Harrow, the right hand batting third baseman, batting 2-50, 2-4-8 so far.
- 37:30Toby telling me before the ball game that he's got the fans at his short for some of the best in baseball.
- 37:36He likes to play in the ball park.
- 37:38You know the Eastern part is a lot better for hitters.
- 37:41You feel a lot more like a hitter in the Eastern ball parks in the American League
- 37:44than you do in the Western part.
- 37:49Here's the set by Rosie and the young right handed pitches.
- 37:52Harrow takes a strike on the inside corner.
- 37:58Outfield a little bit to the left on him in the infield back,
- 38:01just on second with his lead off double.
- 38:05Pretty good turnout here tonight, it's just very pleasant weather.
- 38:10Ball and in too close, one and one the count on him.
- 38:14Rosema got ahead of Zipk and then launched him on that two base hit for that center.
- 38:27Rosie checks his sign again with Milt May.
- 38:32It is just off the inside corner.
- 38:34Most of the pitches that Rosema's been throwing these right hand hitters in this inning
- 38:39that have been off target have been toward the inside.
- 38:48Oh the tall young right handed, tears done again to go to work.
- 38:53Two one the count on Toby.
- 38:58Rosema ready to deliver that it is a wide one, that was a low outside slider.
- 39:04That's forcing that pitch a little bit.
- 39:09No score on second inning but the Texans are threatening.
- 39:12They've got a man on at second base and nobody down.
- 39:17Harrow had 27 home runs last year and had 87 out of the eyes.
- 39:24He takes strike on the inside corner, full count.
- 39:32Toby didn't start out as much of a home run hitter.
- 39:35Then he began to pick up a little heft along the way and also develop the home run swing.
- 39:42Now the full count delivery from Rosema.
- 39:45Here comes, he swings as they drive to right.
- 39:48Going back is Caulkman, he's there, buried deep, makes the catch.
- 39:52Just back, that's the third, he'll make it easily.
- 39:55Man on third, one away.
- 40:01That will bring up Trondale Washington.
- 40:04The former Oakland player who came to Texas last year.
- 40:08Trondale says he likes it down here, he's still living in Oakland but he says things go good for him.
- 40:13He might be a good fellow here.
- 40:17Heard his legs playing basketball in the off season.
- 40:21That didn't go over too big with the Maddox lift.
- 40:23And he's still slightly hobbled from that.
- 40:27They've got to pull the infield in at the corners, let's see if the other two come in.
- 40:30The up sample's going to come in at shortstop.
- 40:33And Ralph House can let Whitaker play back.
- 40:35So that's the way the infield aligns itself against Florida.
- 40:42Let's stand about a swing, Van Miffy, as he pulls the trigger too soon.
- 40:46Washington has won for six-stop already here, a single, two RBI.
- 40:54Always a part of the fight, isn't he?
- 40:56He's got a running speed, I feel he's straight up on him.
- 41:01Man on third is just one man out, no score, second inning.
- 41:06Swing and a miss.
- 41:09Quite a from a road man out, may want to contab at the mound with his pitcher.
- 41:19The trip with the Tigers is to two cities beginning here in Texas, these two games,
- 41:26and an off day on Thursday on which the Tigers will be traveling.
- 41:30And then the weekend in Toronto, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all single games.
- 41:35Here's a cut on Miffy, he's stuck him out.
- 41:38That's a big strikeout for Roseman with that man at third base and only one away.
- 41:42Now they're two down as he wraps up his second strikeout of the game.
- 41:47And Juan Beníquez, the fleet center fielder, the gold glove winner, steps up.
- 41:53Beníquez with 0 for 9 so far this year.
- 42:02Enfield and dropped back now.
- 42:04Beníquez, as you probably know, hits out of a crowded closed stand,
- 42:09a crowded closed stand center, practically turns his back around toward the pitcher.
- 42:16And he takes a fast ball up the shoulder, in close on him, ball one.
- 42:21No score, inning number two.
- 42:25Arlington, Texas, the scene of Tiger action tonight.
- 42:30Hope you'll be out at Tiger Stadium with us when the Tigers get back home.
- 42:33It'll be Monday the 17th of April against Chicago.
- 42:37It's a tap mound in the dirt.
- 42:41White Sox are off to a good start.
- 42:43They've got Ron Bloomberg hitting, he had another home run today.
- 42:49Milwaukee and the Yankees have gone to the seventh inning in their game in Milwaukee.
- 42:54And it is the Milwaukee 8 and the Yankees 4.
- 42:57Cooper has home run, Thomas has hit two home runs for Milwaukee,
- 43:01and Randolph hit a three-run homer for the Yankees in the sixth inning.
- 43:07One and one on Juan Beníquez.
- 43:10And on third is Richie Ziss, set by the Rose.
- 43:14And the pitch, he takes the ball low, fast ball, going in close.
- 43:22No runs and two hits for Detroit, no runs and one hit for the Rangers.
- 43:29Now Ziss, the hamling down the line from third, keeping an eye on Rose.
- 43:33He has gone through set position, holds his pitches.
- 43:36Beníquez looks at his slider wide.
- 43:38And he is ahead of the young pitcher now, three and one on the batter.
- 43:49Beníquez started out as an infielder in the Boston Red Sox system.
- 43:53When they made an outfielder out of him, he's become a fine one, waiting on a three-and-one delivery.
- 44:00Caps ball in the dirt, back of the play.
- 44:14While Beníquez had a throwing problem, at one time had an operation on his shoulder.
- 44:19He had a shoulder separation with the Red Sox back in 1974.
- 44:30Full count on him now, no score, two out of man at third base in the second inning.
- 44:36Both were still staring in, but Beníquez thinks maybe for a little bit too long he steps away from the play.
- 44:44Now they're back facing each other.
- 44:49And the set by Rose, the pitch swung out a bounding foul down past Conny Ryan, the third base coach.
- 45:03Conny played with the Atlanta Crackers down in 1940, 1940 when that was down there.
- 45:17Here's a step down, a pitch to Juan Beníquez.
- 45:21Swings fly ball, deep center fielder, floor backing up.
- 45:24He'll have room in the next, the Glenscombe, a wide retard.
- 45:29Rose gets out of trouble, no runs on one hit, there were no errors in one man.
- 45:34That's the end of two, Texas nothing, Detroit nothing.
- 45:37Plymouth announces a breakthrough in American automobiles.
- 45:42New Plymouth Horizon, the car you can drive in comfort and confidence on any kind of road.
- 45:51Horizon gives you superb traction and stability because it's the first American-made car of its size with front-wheel drive.

- 46:13The EPA estimated a manual transmission Horizon without optional air conditioning and power steering by 41 miles per gallon highway, 27 city, near mileage in a different.
- 46:24Yet Horizon is base price to just $87.06 excluding taxes and destination charges.
- 46:31Anytime you want to go anywhere, good vibes, Horizon can handle it.
- 46:37Now at your great Detroit-Plymouth dealers.
- 46:41Did you know that during his 18-year boxing career, gentleman Jim Quibbett never had a bloody nose or a black eye?
- 46:47That's a WGR sports stat in Longdale Conquest.
- 46:56The Tigers have a new equipment manager, Theo de Thauval, the 39-year-old trainer with Evansville.
- 47:03He's been appointed to that job by Jim Campbell, the executive vice president and general manager.
- 47:09And he will travel with the Tigers and handle their equipment.
- 47:17Tiger Stadium. And Paul and I want to send our very best to Jack Han, who has resigned from his job, and we hope Jack the very best of luck in whatever endeavor he undertakes.
- 47:29Here's Ron LaFleur now, beating it off of the Tigers, and he takes the ball in close.
- 47:33Ball on, Ronny.
- 47:35He bounces a second of A to his first trip.
- 47:38This game is scoreless. Third inning, Medich on the mound delivers strike called.
- 47:44One and one on LaFleur.
- 47:48Outfield slightly scored right on him in the infield back.
- 47:52Medich pitches again. There's a bounding ball.
- 47:55The wills at second base. He clips it over the first to Hargrove.
- 47:59And LaFleur goes out the same way he did in the first inning, second to first.
- 48:03He's Mankowski who's singled in the first inning.
- 48:07And Phil was erased in a double play.
- 48:18Left hand batter against the right-hander Doc Medich.
- 48:23Swing and a foul right down below it.
- 48:28And a gentleman from Plano will take that one home with him.
- 48:33Pretty good stop. Bounced from the aisle and he left-handed it.
- 48:38Here it comes. Watch out.
- 48:41Jack Knight following the way of an inside fastball from Medich.
- 48:47Doc's real name is George.
- 48:53He delivers. There's a bounding ball back to the wills.
- 48:56He's to his right. He has it for the first. Got him.
- 49:00Oh, Bump Will's has been busy down there second base.
- 49:10That's his fourth or fifth already. Here's Rusty Star who hit into a double play.
- 49:14On a brilliant maneuver by Bump in the first inning.
- 49:18Rusty hit the ball sharply up the middle.
- 49:20Will's got back, back-handed it behind the bag.
- 49:23And with one motion out of the glove,
- 49:25it's the ball to Kapanaris who relay the hard drive for the D.P.
- 49:31Rusty takes a slow curveball over.
- 49:35Strike called.
- 49:40Yes, sir, you want to see these young Tigers in action when they get back to Tiger Stadium.
- 49:44Be out there with us throughout the season.
- 49:47Fastball going away, one and one on the stop.
- 49:53It's so fun like the fun you have at the ballpark.
- 49:57One and one now on Rusty, two out, nobody on.
- 49:59Scoreless game. Swing and a tap fouled in the dirt.
- 50:04Over the clock a little bit on that one.
- 50:08Three hits for the Tigers and one for the Rangers.
- 50:11Tigers three hits and then singles. The Rangers one hit with a double by Ziff.
- 50:19Now the motion, here's a pitch. In close, fastball two-two.
- 50:27Billy Hunter talking about medicine spring training
- 50:30and how a lot of times certain pitches don't look good in spring training
- 50:34and then can do the job when the bell rings.
- 50:37Here's a pitch. There's a chopper foul.
- 50:41Billy said, I remember one time I got a home run, a double, and a single off Sal Magley.
- 50:46I was in a spring game. He said, no way I can hit Magley that good in the regular season.
- 50:59Two-two, the count on Rusty's top. Here it comes.
- 51:02Swung on a high fly ball to right field, not deep enough.
- 51:06Washington is there waiting. It'll come down and does in his glove.
- 51:11One-two-three in the Tigers third. We go to the last half of third.
- 51:16Detroit nothing, Texas nothing.
- 51:20There's two things I remember about the 58.
- 51:23I spent more on the air than on the air from the car and the ball from the first shooting.
- 51:31It's also the U.S. party's music champions.
- 51:33Now in 66 I remember two more fans. A silver Corvette and a redhead named George L.
- 51:42This year I got myself a Chevy wagon.
- 51:45Four more things to remember.
- 51:47A little Jim, a little Joe, a little Jim and a little Bob.
- 51:51I've had a lot of different kinds of Chevy's over the years, but one kind of spark-blood champion.
- 51:56He can't buy a better truck, boy, is he gonna call him champion, champion.
- 52:04He can't buy a better truck no matter where you are than champion, champion.
- 52:12Number one in the world, number one in your car.
- 52:17Did I forget someone? Did I forget Billy Jack?
- 52:30Well, Rosemar ready to go into action now. It's Bob Wilkes that leads it off against Rosie.
- 52:36And then after the second baseman bats it'll be the catcher Sunburn followed by the top of the batting order Mike Hargrove.
- 52:46Each of these teams won two out of three in its opening series.
- 52:50The Rangers were taking the measure, the Yankees and the Tigers besting the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 52:58Well, Wilkes, the switch batter will be up there left-handed.
- 53:02He's hitting 250 so far, two for eight.
- 53:09Now, Kelsky on the grass at third base, anticipating the bump possibility as Rosemar delivers high and away, ball one on Will.
- 53:22Little guy's on himself a regular spot down here.
- 53:25He swings and it's one up the middle, passed Campbell's glove on one hop on in the center field.
- 53:31Campbell got back a second, almost got through that ball, but it got past him and it is hit number two off Rosemar.
- 53:38Campbell's leads off with a single. Here's Jim Sunberg with one for nine.
- 53:44After Billy Hunter came down here last year, Sunberg just sort of switched around and made himself a good hitter.
- 53:50Went up on the bat a little bit, got some confidence.
- 53:53Hunter got to a point where he wouldn't take Jim out in the late innings for a pitch batter.
- 53:59And he ended up with his finest year at the plate. He batted 291.
- 54:05And out of that, his best average had been 242.
- 54:12There's a toss over to first base.
- 54:15In fact, he had averages of 242, 199, and 228 before he moved up to 291.
- 54:23University of Iowa product, Jim Sunberg.
- 54:27Will's with a pretty good lead at third base.
- 54:30And he goes, a pitch he swung on and missed.
- 54:32He's got a second. It is not in time.
- 54:35He got a good jump on Rosemar.
- 54:37May could not contend with that. It's a steal for Will.
- 54:43No question about that one. He got a good jump.
- 54:46That pitch was low and Sunberg helped the runner.
- 54:49He went swinging at a pitch outside the strike zone and May had to pick the ball out of the dirt.
- 54:53So, Milt was held back a bit there.
- 54:55That's the first steal for a bop. He's been thrown out once before.
- 54:59Man on second, now nobody down.
- 55:02It's the second straight inning. They've got a man on second base with nobody out against Rosemar.
- 55:08No score at third inning.
- 55:10And Sunberg takes his flight of wide, one and one.
- 55:20Opbele on Sunberg is just slightly toward left field.
- 55:26Here's the set and the pitch.
- 55:28In too close, down around the knees, two and one.
- 55:35Rosemar's not walking anybody, but his control really hasn't been as sharp as his record would indicate.
- 55:41He's struck out a couple.
- 55:44He's thrown quite a few pitches for this stage of the game.
- 55:50Now behind on the head, he goes to the two-one set position, delivers.
- 55:55Here's a bounding ball to first, Thompson gloves it, makes the play on assisted wills, takes third easily.
- 56:01And this is the second straight inning that the Rangers have put a man in third with one away.
- 56:11Mike Hargrove, who bounced out first base to pitch a covering will be the batter.
- 56:16The Tigers are going to pull their infield in again.
- 56:19No exception of Whitaker, the second baseman.
- 56:34Mike Hargrove, the left-hander batting first baseman, at the plate.
- 56:41Now the stretch and the pitch.
- 56:43He swings as they drive to deep center field, right center.
- 56:46The floor goes back, makes the catch, the run will score.
- 56:49Died by Will, he crosses the plate, one nothing check.
- 56:57No play at all at the plate.
- 56:59There's no chance for LaFleur.
- 57:01He had to go deep in the right center to pull the ball in.
- 57:05And Will has just dropped down home with a first run of the game.
- 57:08One to nothing Rangers.
- 57:10Here's Bert Campanari, RBI on the sacrifice for Hargrove.
- 57:15That's his first run batted in this year.
- 57:21Right-hand batting Campanari is waiting.
- 57:24One nothing Texas in the third as they drive to center.
- 57:27He comes to the floor.
- 57:28He grabs it on the run towards second base.
- 57:31A good running catch by Ron and the side retired.
- 57:35One run, one hit, no errors.
- 57:37Nobody left, but at the end of three of the Rangers, one and the Tigers nothing.
- 57:48Well, let's look at the other scores.
- 57:49This afternoon the White Sox beat Toronto 9-5.
- 57:52And there were plenty of home runs there for Chicago.
- 57:55Sadahom with the man on, Horta with the man on, Gar with the bases empty,
- 58:00Bloomberg with the man on, and two bases empty home runs by Toronto
- 58:03both in the fourth inning by Cardi and by Valette.
- 58:06Jefferson is the loser and Cory Alba the winner.
- 58:10The Yankee-Milwaukee game as we told you a moment or two ago,
- 58:13it is eight for Milwaukee and four for the Yankees here in the seventh inning.
- 58:17Cooper and Randolph in his home runs and Thomas has hit two for the Brewers.
- 58:21Hard to believe by each week in the third against Augustine.
- 58:25And Minnesota and California, we've got the pictures up now.
- 58:28Erickson against Hussey and Seattle, Oakland, no report on that one yet.
- 58:33In the National League the Cubs beat the Mets by a score of 42.
- 58:37Russell the winner and Kuzma takes it off to that one.
- 58:41Montreal and the Phillies delayed because of rain.
- 58:44And now we've got word that it was postponed because of rain
- 58:47and will be made up on the 5th of July.
- 58:50Rangers abrupt the tie there on the third inning on a single by Wells with stolen base.
- 59:08He moved to third on the bounce out and came home with a sacrifice off the bat of Hargrove.
- 59:12The only score of the game, one nothing Rangers, as Medics and Rosemary duel away here in Texas.
- 59:18And here's the microphone to bring us the action of ball carrying.
- 59:22Okay Ernie, thank you.
- 59:23Jason Thompson will lead it off for the Tigers here in the fourth inning.
- 59:27Jason to the pop flight of left his first time up.
- 59:31He'll be followed by Kemp and Corcoran against the big right-hander Medich.
- 59:37They're playing him straight away both in the infield and outfield.
- 59:43Here's the lineup on the first pitch of the inning.
- 59:46Little low, ball one.
- 59:49From the infield for Texas, Hargrove at first, Wills at second, Kemp on errors at short, Harrah at third.
- 59:57A pitch to Jason, check swing, it was low and away and he checked in time.
- 1:00:02The appeal made down to third base umpire Jim Evans.
- 1:00:06He supported the contention of Durwood Merrill that Jason had checked.
- 1:00:092-0 count on Thompson.
- 1:00:17Medich into the pump, here's the pitch.
- 1:00:20There's a foul back to the screen.
- 1:00:23I realize now they've eliminated one of these screens here at Arlington Stadium.
- 1:00:28They used to have one of a double set.
- 1:00:30They haven't made the first screen any larger but they've taken away the second one.
- 1:00:36A lot of balls get in the stands here.
- 1:00:40A 2-1 pitch.
- 1:00:43Ball three, a little bit low.
- 1:00:49Medich really bounced around last year.
- 1:00:51He pitched for three teams, Oakland, Seattle, and the New York Mets.
- 1:00:58Thompson fouls one off of the play.
- 1:01:01Full count on Jason.
- 1:01:04Medich had an accumulative record of 12 wins and 7 defeats.
- 1:01:17Had a fine rookie season, you'll recall, with the Yankees back in 1973.
- 1:01:25Al Bumbrey of Baltimore won the rookie honors that year, however.
- 1:01:29Goal for a ball and Thompson draws a walk, the second given up by Medich.
- 1:01:35First time in the ball game the Tigers have gotten their leadoff man on base, however.
- 1:01:40That'll bring up Steve Kemp.
- 1:01:42Kemp struck out swinging his first time up.
- 1:01:51Thompson has drawn a walk in each of his first three games.
- 1:02:03Holding at the back at first is Hargrove, a set by Medich.
- 1:02:06The pitch to Kemp, swung out at line foul into the stands beyond the Tiger dugout.
- 1:02:11The leading dugout here in Arlington is behind third.
- 1:02:22How about a rain over the weekend down here in Texas?
- 1:02:28The inside moved him back.
- 1:02:32Still got a little puddle on top of the Tiger dugout, in fact, in a depression there.
- 1:02:40The forecast for this week is excellent.
- 1:02:43That's one of the ex-Detroit area TV forecasters working down here, giving us that word.
- 1:02:50Troy Dungan, as they set the pitch to Kemp, outside for a ball, two and one on Steve.
- 1:02:58Medich, a very methodical worker, he wants a new baseball.
- 1:03:06The first club is strong up the middle. They get Sundberg, a gold glove winner, behind the plate.
- 1:03:11Out in center field, Juan Beníquez, who won a gold glove last year for Fielding Palace.
- 1:03:17And around the back at second, Wills and Campaneras.
- 1:03:20Here's the pitch. Swung out and right back to the mound.
- 1:03:23Medich, he drops the ball. Has only one play. He goes to first base to get Kemp.
- 1:03:27George had trouble getting the ball out of the glove.
- 1:03:29He looked at second, had a double play right in front of him, but he simply did not handle the ball well.
- 1:03:35He dropped it as he pulled it out of the glove.
- 1:03:38By the time he picked it up, he had only the one play of first base on Kemp.
- 1:03:41So Thompson moves up to second.
- 1:03:48And that'll bring up Corcoran. Corky single it up his first time up.
- 1:04:03Medich, staring in, getting the sign from Sundberg, looks back at Thompson.
- 1:04:08Here's the pitch. Corky takes the strike.
- 1:04:23Medich has walked two. He's struck out one and given up three hits. All singles.
- 1:04:30Corky swings, rips one up the middle. It's in the center field, a base hit.
- 1:04:33Here comes Thompson around third. Vanekas up with the ball.
- 1:04:36Millthrow to the plate. Thompson scores.
- 1:04:39Corcoran delivers the Tiger run to tie the ball game at one to one.
- 1:04:43Corky, after going hitless in the first three Tiger games, he was a pinch hitter in two of them and walked those times.
- 1:04:50Delivers a couple of singles in this game against Medich.
- 1:04:59That'll bring up Millth May, who pulled a single down the right field line his first time up.
- 1:05:04Millth hitting well.
- 1:05:06The latter stages of spring training and it carried over into the regular season.
- 1:05:11In fact, Millth is now three for five for the year.
- 1:05:30Medich taking a little time. Corcoran edges further away from the bag at first.
- 1:05:36Here's the pitch. There's a fly ball hit deep right center field. Vanekas on the run near the wall.
- 1:05:41Reaches 10th and it is off the wall. Rounding second heading for third is Corcoran.
- 1:05:45May seems in the second with a double. Holding a third is Corcoran.
- 1:05:49Corky had to hold. It looked for a moment like Vanekas might get there.
- 1:05:53Washington almost colliding with Vanekas at the wall, similar to the double by Richie Zisk to the opposite side of the field earlier in the contest.
- 1:06:03It got off the glove of Vanekas as he leaped and it bounced off the wall.
- 1:06:08Had to be picked up by Washington. And May is on that second with a double.
- 1:06:12At third is Corcoran. We've got a conference of the mound.
- 1:06:15Thunberg talking with Medich. And before Whitaker, bats will pause for station identification.
- 1:06:21This is the Detroit Tiger baseball network.
- 1:06:24You're listening to America's great radio station. This is WJR Detroit.
- 1:06:29Now with less than 10 minutes to play in the second period of tonight's Stanley Cup playoff game, the Detroit Red Wings 4 and the Atlanta Flames 1.
- 1:06:46Here's Lue. Sweet Lue walked his first time up. The infield is in tight all around for Texas.
- 1:06:53Runners at second and third, one away to game tied, one to one.
- 1:06:56And now to Whitaker. Moved him back. He had to spin out of the way of that fastball inside.
- 1:07:07The Tigers have tied it on a walk and a single and have a chance to move ahead with runners at second and third following May's double.
- 1:07:15There's a fly ball down the left field line. It is slicing far and out of reach.
- 1:07:20Oliver swung a little bit toward left center at a long run, almost caught up with it.
- 1:07:27It fell foul about four feet.
- 1:07:32Kind of a collective sigh here by the Rangers fans.
- 1:07:40Expecting a very big turnout tomorrow night at Arlington Stadium when the bird, Mark Siddrich,
- 1:07:47throws for the Tigers against John Matlack who won the opening game here for Texas.
- 1:07:53Here's the 1-1 pitch. Whitaker bounces one to short. Campy checks the runners, throws to first.
- 1:07:58Got him two down now with runners still at second and third.
- 1:08:04Well, a drawn-in infield paid off that time for the Rangers.
- 1:08:08The ball hit sharply right to Campanaro's.
- 1:08:12Here's Allen Trammell now on the Tiger fourth.
- 1:08:18Trammell flied to right his first time up.
- 1:08:22With the exception of May, the Tiger batters have not been getting around on med-age,
- 1:08:27but May has been able to hit him and hit him hard and pull him.
- 1:08:32Getting some activity on the bullpen down there. Looks like that might be...
- 1:08:37That would be Comer, a rookie right-hander.
- 1:08:42Here's the pitch. Swung on, a line drive, base hit right center field by Trammell.
- 1:08:46Scoring is Corcoran. Here comes Mays being held.
- 1:08:49They're thrown to the plate. Now they've got off the base at first is Trammell,
- 1:08:52but he bumps out his back and is in safely at first base.
- 1:08:56Nobody was covering first.
- 1:08:58Argrove had come in to cut off the ball in the middle of the diamond.
- 1:09:01Trammell took almost too big a turn, however.
- 1:09:04Sundberg was ready to run him down at first base, but then nobody was covering the plate.
- 1:09:08May went on the breaks as he started to head home.
- 1:09:11The Tigers get one in. May at third. At first is Trammell following his RBI.
- 1:09:16Single and the Tigers now lead it 2-1.
- 1:09:19And it's the top of the batting order with Ron LaFleur stepping in.
- 1:09:25That ball hit on a line sharply to right center field.
- 1:09:30A wise choice stopping May at third base.
- 1:09:34Here's the pitch to Ronnie. He fouls this one out of play in right field.
- 1:09:39Tigers now with a total of six hits in the ball game.
- 1:09:48The stretch by Medich.
- 1:09:55The pitch to Ron. He swings and pops one down the right field line.
- 1:10:00Washington coming in. Hargrove going back.
- 1:10:02Foul ball out of the reach to second baseman Wills.
- 1:10:05It fell in between all three of them.
- 1:10:08A little slicing pop foul that was blown that direction by the wind.
- 1:10:15Everybody has to come back. Trammell was all the way to third base.
- 1:10:22The ball has bounced out twice to Wills at second.
- 1:10:34A walk and three hits paying off for a couple of tanker runs here in the fourth inning.
- 1:10:40Medich ready again. Here's the two-strike pitch.
- 1:10:43Trammell outside.
- 1:10:53Trammell moving away from the back at first.
- 1:10:55May with a short lead down the line from third.
- 1:10:58The ball cuts to ground ball to Wills again.
- 1:11:00He puts the campy for the fourth on Trammell and that retires the Tigers.
- 1:11:04But the Tigers break through for a couple of runs.
- 1:11:07They score two runs on three hits and a walk. No errors.
- 1:11:10Two runners left on base.
- 1:11:12The Rangers to bat on the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:11:14It's now Tigers two, the Rangers one.
- 1:11:18No charge checking. Other banks make it tougher.
- 1:11:23City National makes it easier.
- 1:11:25Now while other banks are increasing the minimum savings balance you need for no charge checking,
- 1:11:31CNB lowers it with combo checking.
- 1:11:34That's right, some banks are raising the minimum savings requirement to a whopping $500,
- 1:11:47but CNB lowers it to $200.
- 1:11:50A $200 minimum balance in savings or a $200 minimum balance in your checking account
- 1:11:56and you check without charge.
- 1:11:58$200 in savings or $200 in checking and you write all the checks you want without charge.
- 1:12:06All your checks without charge.
- 1:12:08Other banks make no charge checking tougher.
- 1:12:11Combo checking makes it easier.
- 1:12:13Who's got it?
- 1:12:14Nobody.
- 1:12:15City National.
- 1:12:17Member FDIC.
- 1:12:35Now the Tigers on top now two to one as the Rangers come to bat here on the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:12:41And I'd like to send along some get well wishes to a longtime Tiger listener up in Charlevoix, Mr. Frank Supernaut.
- 1:12:49Also to the News Director, WJR Dave White.
- 1:12:52Best wishes, Dave, entering the Bobanum Hospital for surgery tomorrow.
- 1:12:59Here's Al Oliver, number zero, deleted off in the fourth of the Rangers.
- 1:13:03He bounced out the second his first time up.
- 1:13:06Left hand batter, they pitch to Al.
- 1:13:08The players bumped down the third base line, it's a beauty.
- 1:13:11Mankowski will not make any plays.
- 1:13:18A bump single for Al Oliver.
- 1:13:22Perfectly placed halfway between the place and third.
- 1:13:30Richie Zisk, who doubled in the second inning, got as far as third base.
- 1:13:38Now Zisk won the opening game for Texas with a home run and a ninth inning.
- 1:13:43Had a two run homer here last night against the Yankees.
- 1:13:49A multi-millionaire Richie Zisk.
- 1:13:53Set by Rosie, here's the pitch.
- 1:13:55Just outside ball one.
- 1:13:58It's reported that the contract of Zisk is for 10 years and for approximately $2.8 million.
- 1:14:10Strong right hand batter.
- 1:14:13The pitch to him, swung on, a fly ball hit to shallow right field,
- 1:14:16Corkman on the run, still coming.
- 1:14:18He makes the catch, a fine running catch by Corky, playing very deep on Zisk.
- 1:14:23Now there's one down on the Ranger fourth inning.
- 1:14:27That'll bring up Toby Herra.
- 1:14:29He flies the clock run his first time up.
- 1:14:43Now Toby had his best home run total in his career last year, 27 homers.
- 1:14:51He played in 159 games for Texas.
- 1:15:02Here's the set by Rosemont, will look to first at Oliver, the pitch.
- 1:15:05Ground ball to the right side, Whitaker over Hezit.
- 1:15:07Goes to second for one, the relay to first.
- 1:15:09It is not in time.
- 1:15:11Bang, bang, play of first base.
- 1:15:13Marty Springstead calling Herra safe.
- 1:15:15So it goes as a force of seconds.
- 1:15:20And that brings up Claudel Washington.
- 1:15:27Washington struck out his first time up.
- 1:15:38Young man who came up, earned his spot on the majors with the Oakland A's.
- 1:15:44Still only 23 years old.
- 1:15:52Rosemont with his drop on his knee, now into the stretch.
- 1:15:55The pitch still of Washington, it's a pitch out, but no movement at first by Herra.
- 1:16:09Rosie is struck out up there, hasn't walked anybody.
- 1:16:12Here's a foul in the dirt rolling behind the plate.
- 1:16:22Coolish for Texas, I'll tell you, the Tigers usually hear when it's humid in the evening.
- 1:16:28Not so tonight.
- 1:16:30They've all got jackets on down on the Tiger dugout.
- 1:16:36While they set the pitch, swung on and missed, a ball and two strikes on Claudel.
- 1:16:44Ernie was talking about that rumored trade between the Yankees concerning Washington and Lyle.
- 1:16:52There's another reported trade, Herra for nettles at one time.
- 1:16:57Hi, there's the runner going Herra, slides, he is out at second base.
- 1:17:01The good bill by Milton A cut him down and that retires the Rangers in the fourth inning.
- 1:17:06No runs, no hits, no errors, they do not leave anybody.
- 1:17:09After four innings of play, it's the Tigers two, the Rangers one.
- 1:17:14When I first thought about doing this commercial, I realized I could do it by myself if I wanted to run the recording equipment and talk into the microphone at the same time.
- 1:17:23But I also realized it would probably get done better if my friend Rex ran the equipment while I did the talking.
- 1:17:29When I thought about how this commercial might sound better with some music, I realized I could do that by myself too if I learned to play all the instruments.
- 1:17:37But that it would probably sound better if I got together with Ray and Bob and Pete and the boys.
- 1:17:42So we did just what the Marathon Oil Company did.
- 1:17:45We got together to do it better.
- 1:17:47We didn't do it to everyone, just to do it better.
- 1:17:50I think it worked out pretty good.
- 1:17:52Just like we did for Marathon.
- 1:17:54So I even got some more people together to do some singing.
- 1:17:57We got together to do it better.
- 1:18:04We did it better.
- 1:18:09Marathon Oil Company.
- 1:18:11We got together to do it better.
- 1:18:13And we did.
- 1:18:16This is Jim Garrett.
- 1:18:18Oakland County juvenile courtism need to foster homes for youngsters and especially teenagers.
- 1:18:24For information call 858-0204.
- 1:18:36We're talking about possible deals with Texas.
- 1:18:39The reference to Herra's metals trade is an alleged phone call made early in the morning one time last year by the then general manager of the Yankees, Gabe Paul, to Brad Corbett.
- 1:18:57Well, he wound up getting Brad Corbett, Jr., Brad's son.
- 1:19:01Woke him up and said, is this Brad?
- 1:19:03And he said, yes.
- 1:19:04He said, how about metals for Herra?
- 1:19:06Young Brad said, nope.
- 1:19:10Brad Sr. didn't find out about it until some time later.
- 1:19:15Here's Phil Mankowski.
- 1:19:16Phil won for two.
- 1:19:18He cuts and fouls into the screen.
- 1:19:20Phil singled in the first inning.
- 1:19:28Rangers are interested in acquiring some more pitching.
- 1:19:31They're looking at Jim Kern or trying to work a deal out.
- 1:19:33There's a foul fly toward the seats in left field, back up a number of rows.
- 1:19:40They have been interested in getting Kern.
- 1:19:42They have a young man, Len Parker, on this pitching staff who might be the answer, but they're not really sure of him yet.
- 1:19:51The pitch to Mankowski, round ball to first.
- 1:19:54Hargrove fields it.
- 1:19:55He'll make the play unassisted to retire Mankow, one down in the Tiger fifth inning.
- 1:20:02That brings up Rusty.
- 1:20:05Stop is over two.
- 1:20:06He bounced into a double play in the first inning, fly to right his last trip.
- 1:20:13Getting an even 333 now, five for 15.
- 1:20:25Here's the windup by Medich. The pitch is a little low, ball one.
- 1:20:36Not much breeze at all here in Arlington Stadium now.
- 1:20:39Cut and a foul, ball and a strike on Rusty.
- 1:20:43This park is known for its unpredictable winds, kind of a swirling wind usually.
- 1:20:54Here's the windup, the one-one pitch.
- 1:20:58Check swing at the ball, two and one on stop.
- 1:21:01Tigers in front, two to one.
- 1:21:04Rangers gonna run on the bottom of the third.
- 1:21:06The Tigers moved ahead with two on the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:21:15Stop patiently waiting at the plate.
- 1:21:18Now the motion by Medich, the two-one pitch, ball three.
- 1:21:35Medich has walked two Tigers, and he walks the third.
- 1:21:40Stop takes it low.
- 1:21:44That'll bring up Jason Thompson, who got a base on balls his first time up, or his last time up, and scored the first Tiger run.
- 1:21:57And moving Benekis to straightaway center.
- 1:22:00He had started to play Jason in right-center field, but Billy Hunter waved him back out the straight center.
- 1:22:09Infield and double play depth.
- 1:22:11Bob at first, one away here in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:22:15Medich ready to go to work on Jason.
- 1:22:17The first pitch is taking a high ball one.
- 1:22:24Ernie will be on with his pregame show again tomorrow night at 8.15 Detroit time and Michigan time.
- 1:22:31Windup of the short two-game series.
- 1:22:34Jason swings, bounces one down behind first.
- 1:22:37Hargrove field tags first, throws to second.
- 1:22:39It gets past Campanella.
- 1:22:41Stop is safe, but he won't advance any further.
- 1:22:44Rusty had slid in, and in picking himself up, he did not have time to get over the third.
- 1:22:48Campy chased the ball down and shallow left field.
- 1:22:54So it goes as a putout at first on Thompson with Stop taking second.
- 1:22:58And it brings up Steve Kemp now with two down.
- 1:23:05Kemp hitless in two trips.
- 1:23:08Four for 11 for the season for Steve.
- 1:23:13Once again, the tongue depressor being used by Medich.
- 1:23:17Trouble picking up some of that reddish clay in his spikes out on the mound.
- 1:23:28Second is the pitch to Kemp. A high ball one on Steve.
- 1:23:41Mark Federich going tomorrow night did not pitch against the Rangers at all, either in Detroit or here.
- 1:23:47During the span of time he was with us last year, strike called on Kemp.
- 1:23:53A lot of the fans eager to get a chance to see the bird out here tomorrow night.
- 1:24:01Stop at second, two down, and a Tiger fifth inning, a 1-1 count.
- 1:24:06Now on Kemp.
- 1:24:10The pitch to him. Moved him back, almost hit him.
- 1:24:15Kemp had to do quite a dance that time to get out of the way.
- 1:24:23Two balls and a strike on Steve.
- 1:24:30Here's the look to second by Medich.
- 1:24:32He delivers. Ball three low and inside. On deck is Corcoran.
- 1:24:51Now Medich into the stretch.
- 1:24:54Here's the 3-1 pitch. Bowled to the screen.
- 1:24:58Now on Steve.
- 1:25:07The Rangers will be facing a left-hander tomorrow night in John Matlack.
- 1:25:13Well, Pouck so far has stuck to that platooning of five positions.
- 1:25:19Here's the set now. The Pouck on pitch to Kemp. Swung on and tapped down the first base line foul.
- 1:25:42The Rangers really had the number of the Tigers last year, winning four out of five here.
- 1:25:51And four out of five in Detroit. Medich asking for time. He walks off the mound.
- 1:25:56Now it comes back up.
- 1:26:01Stopped, walked with one out, moved to second on the bounce-out by Thompson.
- 1:26:04He's there now with two down, a 3-2 count on Kemp.
- 1:26:08Here's the pitch to Steve. He fouls this one off.
- 1:26:17Texas fans out here last night had a lot of fun, and they game won by the Rangers over the Yankees.
- 1:26:23They were all issued free handkerchiefs when they entered the ballpark last night.
- 1:26:29They were called Beat the Yankee Hankees.
- 1:26:33And they did a lot of waving of them because they beat the Yankees 5-2.
- 1:26:40Ready is Medich. The pitch foul to the screen. Kemp giving him a battle at the plate.
- 1:26:49Two runs on six hits for the Tigers, a run on three hits for the Rangers.
- 1:26:56A new supply of baseball is necessary for Derwood Merrill.
- 1:27:04Merrill returns one to the ball boy. Medich has not liked a couple of balls he's gotten out there recently.
- 1:27:21Now they stretch by Doc. Here's the pitch. Ball four, he walked in with an off-beat pitch high and outside to Steve.
- 1:27:29So the Tigers have two on base as a result of walks here in the fifth inning.
- 1:27:34And Tim Coughlin strives to the plate. Tim is 2-2 tonight.
- 1:27:39That's four walks given up by Medich.
- 1:27:43And three of them have come in the last two innings.
- 1:27:49Coughlin singled in the second inning, got as far as third base, was stranded there.
- 1:27:54In the fourth inning he singled in a Tiger run and scored one.
- 1:28:03Medich taking plenty of time. Here's the first pitch to Tim. Moved him back for the fastball.
- 1:28:13And he mentioned the fact that Dr. Bobby Brown is one of the directors here of the Rangers Ball Club.
- 1:28:20Back when Doc was first in the Yankee system, his advisor at the University of Pittsburgh was Dr. Bobby Brown.
- 1:28:29Here's the pitch from Medich. Lowing away.
- 1:28:48Ball two count on Tim Coughlin.
- 1:28:54Edging away from second. They're not paying attention to the base runners right now. Here's the pitch to Coughlin.
- 1:29:01Oh, no, it's right. He got that one in above the knees. Coughlin took a look, was tempted, held off.
- 1:29:07Two-one count now. Umberger is beginning to throw in the bullpen for the Rangers.
- 1:29:14Oh, left-hander.
- 1:29:21Two-one count on Coughlin. The pitch from Medich. Swung on, a drive toward the right field corner.
- 1:29:26That may be extra bases. Over to cut it off is Washington. Here comes Staub to score.
- 1:29:31Kemp will hold it third. Coughlin settles for a long single. That ball dies in that outfield out there.
- 1:29:37It may be quite moist from all the rain over the last couple of days.
- 1:29:42And it was stopped down. Washington was able to cut it off before it got to the corner.
- 1:29:47The Tigers had another run. Coughlin picks up his third straight single, his second RBI of the night, and the Tigers lead it 3-1.
- 1:29:54Here comes Milt May, who's had a hot bat against Medich tonight. Milt with a single and a double.
- 1:30:03Kemp at third. Coughlin at third.
- 1:30:14The difference at the mound, Sundberg out to talk to Medich. Now, Durwood Meryl goes out to break it up.
- 1:30:20And they're trying to give Humburger some time. That was the ploy. Here comes Billy Hunter out of a Ranger dugout.
- 1:30:26I would suspect we're going to get a pitching change right here.
- 1:30:32Billy taking his time, slowly trudging out to the mound. Humburger, left-hander, who was with Texas, went away to Oakland,
- 1:30:40and then they got him back to the latter stages last season.
- 1:30:44Appears to be ready to come on. May is the next scheduled Tiger batter. Now the plate umpire Meryl again goes out.
- 1:30:52Is he going to make a change? No, he's not going to make a change right now.
- 1:31:00Medich standing alone on the mound, waiting for Sundberg to retrace his steps.
- 1:31:05Now Hunter crosses the line, makes a U-turn, and we've got the third base umpire Jim Evans.
- 1:31:11All of the umpires tell Billy, you can't pull that.
- 1:31:14Billy tried to make a U-turn. He crossed the line, went about four steps, made a U-turn, headed back toward the diamond.
- 1:31:21All three umpires out on the field converged on Billy, waving him back to the dugout.
- 1:31:29Have you seen that before? I never have. He gave me the old pillow and he went for it.
- 1:31:36Now he's going to make a pitch here. May stepping in. Humburger still loosening in the bullpen.
- 1:31:47Runners at first and third. Here's the set, the pitch to May.
- 1:31:53He swings by ball, hit deep right field, going back is Washington. Near the wall it may be, it's gone, a three run homer for Milt May.
- 1:32:01He took advantage of the one pitch that had to be thrown him by George Medich, and the Tigers now lead it six to one.
- 1:32:09Here comes May, scoring with his second homerun of the year.
- 1:32:16And that's another Superior homerun. A homer by Milt May earns him a free case of those crispy fresh Superior potato chips,
- 1:32:26and sends another case of Superior potato chips to the Boniface Community Action Center.
- 1:32:32Well, Billy should have taken him out the first time. He knows it now.
- 1:32:37He tried to get him out, tried the fly to go back out there, but it didn't work.
- 1:32:42He had to have him in to throw one pitch, and Milt May liked what he saw and parked it up into the seats in the right field.
- 1:32:51But now the pitching change takes place. Ernie?
- 1:32:54Well, it'll be Humburger, the left hander coming in, and it's been the lower part of the batting order that's done the damage for the Tigers.
- 1:33:01With three singles and three chips, he's picked up two RBI's and scored twice.
- 1:33:07And Milt May, right behind him, with a single, a double, and a homerun in three chips.
- 1:33:12Those two hitters, batting in the number six and seven spots, have six to six.
- 1:33:19And they've got six of the eight Tiger hits, the only other Tiger hit from Mankowski's single in the first inning,
- 1:33:24and a single by Tramble that's not going to run in the fourth inning.
- 1:33:28Now we'll see Humburger, U-N-B-A-R-J.
- 1:33:32In that one outing, he's the left hander taking his shoe up top, right now.
- 1:33:42And the Tigers have ripped this one open with a four-run surge in the fifth inning, following the two runs that they scored in the fourth.
- 1:33:50They now beat it with six runs on eight hits and no errors.
- 1:33:55The Rangers have one run, three hits, and they've made no errors.
- 1:34:00But it was.
- 1:34:02And now, on the Christmas, we know here's the Bob Mitchell Boys Choir and Santa Claus is coming.
- 1:34:30The first inning, when Tony Ho was caught stealing in the fourth inning, attempting to steal, that is.
- 1:34:35There's the lineup for the first pitch of the inning.
- 1:34:37Washington bumped toward first, fielded by Whitaker.
- 1:34:40He got him a good play by Sweet Lou, who came in.
- 1:34:44That ball had gotten by Roseman, no chance for David.
- 1:34:47And Whitaker came charging in from his position.
- 1:34:53Thompson, alertly, remained near the bag at first because he would not have had a play.
- 1:34:59Washington is out.
- 1:35:01Let's look at Juan Beníquez now, who's flying to center his first time up.
- 1:35:11Beníquez, Hitlers and 10-5ths so far this season.
- 1:35:14The pitch from Roseman with low ball one.
- 1:35:25Rosy in the aline and getting his sign.
- 1:35:29Here's the pitch.
- 1:35:31Low and away, two and all, they count on Beníquez.
- 1:35:34Roseman windmilling his arm as he gets the ball back from Milton Hay.
- 1:35:43Kemp is very deep in left field on Beníquez.
- 1:35:47More shallow on the right side.
- 1:35:49Here's the pitch.
- 1:35:50He squares and takes a strike.
- 1:35:54He was playing deep at third and Phil now will play in a little bit closer on the step back of the bag.
- 1:36:06The 2-1 pitch to Beníquez, ball three.
- 1:36:11Rosy's had the pitch from behind and with men on base in this ball game with the exception of the first inning.
- 1:36:19He hasn't walked anybody so far.
- 1:36:21The 3-1 pitch, swung on a ground ball to short.
- 1:36:24Crammo has the hop, guns across to Thompson.
- 1:36:27He got him.
- 1:36:28We're two down and let's pause for station identification.
- 1:36:31This is the Detroit Tiger Baseball Network.
- 1:36:34Radio 76, this is WJR Detroit.
- 1:36:37Down in Atlanta at the end of two periods of play, the Red Wings lead the Flames 4-1 on three power play goals and a short-handed score by Hexdahl all in the first period.
- 1:36:47Again at the end of two, Detroit 4, Atlanta 1.
- 1:36:50Wills, who singled his first time up, stole second and moved on to score a run in the third inning.
- 1:36:56He takes one high and outside, ball one.
- 1:37:04The wind up by Rosy, the pitch, a tapper foul to the right of the plate.
- 1:37:10The Rangers got their only run in that third when Wills let off of the single, stole second, took third on a bounce out to first,
- 1:37:17scored on Hargrove Sacrified Fly to deep center.
- 1:37:23Three hits for the Rangers off Rosma.
- 1:37:27Rosma is throwing a ball to Crammo and back up at the second base, Humpire.
- 1:37:31I don't quite get why Larry Barnett wants to look at the ball, but apparently he had requested it.
- 1:37:44Rosy back of the mound, a 1-1 count. Now on Wills, bases empty, two down, bottom of the fifth inning, sixth door on the Tigers lead.
- 1:37:52Took a called strike. He turned his back on that pitch, but it caught the inside corner.
- 1:38:01Hump had a solid season last year with the Rangers in his rookie year, getting 287 in 152 games.
- 1:38:11He skips out of the way of an inside delivery.
- 1:38:17Not nearly the speed that his father possessed when he still was able to steal 28 bases last year.
- 1:38:24He cuts a foul rolling behind to the backstop.
- 1:38:29Count remains 2-2 on Bump Wills.
- 1:38:40One more here tomorrow night, then move on on a travel day Thursday to Toronto for a three-game weekend series.
- 1:38:47Fouls back into the stands. What a count.
- 1:38:49Get some stinging hands back up here below our boots.
- 1:38:56Tigers will return home Monday. Actually, come home Sunday night from Toronto.
- 1:39:02Take on the White Sox next Monday and Tuesday afternoon.
- 1:39:05A little tap off the end of the bat towards third. Mankowski has him on the grab.
- 1:39:08High throw pull down by Thompson. Sides retired.
- 1:39:11One, two, three. After five innings of play, it's the Tigers six, the Rangers one.
- 1:39:20You're batting in the clean-up spot in the Labatt Baseball Trivia game.
- 1:39:24And here's the pitch.
- 1:39:26The house that we've built has seen some pretty long grads.
- 1:39:30Name one player who has hit a fair ball out of Yankee Stadium.
- 1:39:35Take a little time and think it over and relax with a cool, refreshing Labatt's beer.
- 1:39:48If you had a hard time, so did everyone else who tried to hit a fair ball out of Yankee Stadium.
- 1:39:55No one ever accomplished that feat.
- 1:39:58The Labatt baseball calls for great beer. Labatt. Call for Labatt.

- 1:40:54Now, more Tiger baseball action with Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey.
- 1:41:0520-year-old Alan Trammell will lead off a sixth inning for the Tigers.
- 1:41:10Detroit in front 6-1 thanks to two runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth.
- 1:41:15Jim Umbarger kicks high and delivers the fastball in for a strike.
- 1:41:19Umbarger came on to get the final out of the fifth inning and induced Lou Whittaker to bounce out the second on one pitch.
- 1:41:26Here's the pitch.
- 1:41:28That's a ball inside, dear Al.
- 1:41:32Trammell is one for two. He's single to home a Tiger run in the fourth inning.
- 1:41:39Low for a ball.
- 1:41:42Umbarger is 6'6", weighs 200 pounds.
- 1:41:50The 2-1 pitch. Strike. Caught the outside corner.
- 1:41:56Kind of ironic, Umbarger was traded away by the Rangers to Oakland to get Claudell Washington just a year ago in March.
- 1:42:05Change up in for a strike. Trammell took it.
- 1:42:10Off-speed breaking ball by Umbarger. Beauty.
- 1:42:15One down in the Tiger sixth inning.
- 1:42:19That'll bring up Ron LaFleur who three times has hit the ball to bump wheels at second base.
- 1:42:25The pitch to Ron.
- 1:42:27Ball inside.
- 1:42:31Umbarger, another graduate of Arizona State University into the majors.
- 1:42:38There's a ground ball to short. Campaneras bobbles the ball. Picks it up, throws the first, not in time.
- 1:42:44We'll wait for the official score on that one. But it was hit right to Campy and he knew he would have to hustle in order to get Ron after he bobbled it.
- 1:42:52It'll be an error on Campaneras.
- 1:42:55First error of the ball game.
- 1:42:58LaFleur first with one away.
- 1:43:00The batter will be Mankowski.
- 1:43:03We're seeing the official attendance figure now at Arlington Stadium. 13,764.
- 1:43:10Slightly under the crowd of last night when they played the Yankees.
- 1:43:1413,764. LaFleur with a big lead is driven back to the bag by a trough over there.
- 1:43:27To the tall left hander looking at first he goes. It's swung on and missed the throw by Sundberg. Not in time.
- 1:43:33LaFleur in with a stolen base. His second of the year.
- 1:43:37And that stolen base by LaFleur will send a $25 gift certificate from Acme Sporting Good to the Detroit Athletic League.
- 1:43:44The three Acme stars have more and have it for less.
- 1:43:54Mankowski helping out the runner by cutting and missing on that pitch.
- 1:43:58Here's the set by Umberger. The one strike delivery fouled out of a glove of Sundberg off the shin protector it appears.
- 1:44:12LaFleur with his second steal of the year perched on second with one away.
- 1:44:18Mankowski single in the first inning since bounced out to second and to first.
- 1:44:28Still hitting an even 333.
- 1:44:35A look to second. Umberger holds. Delivers.
- 1:44:39He struck him out. Phil took a look at that one.
- 1:44:44Strike out for Umberger in this inning and it brings up Rusty Stobbs.
- 1:44:53Rusty is over two. He walked his last time up.
- 1:44:58And scored on Cochran's single.
- 1:45:06LaFleur leading at second.
- 1:45:12Set by Umberger. Here's the pitch to Rusty.
- 1:45:15There's a call strike on Stobbs.
- 1:45:20Rangers traded away Umberger in March and then bought him from the A's in August.
- 1:45:28In between he spent some time at San Jose Farm Club of the A's.
- 1:45:34Stobbs a little tired of waiting. Sundberg calls time now and he's going up to the mound.
- 1:45:38Maybe cross up on some signs. Thompson waiting on deck for the Tigers.
- 1:45:58Now Umberger ready to work.
- 1:46:00Here's the one strike pitch to Stobbs. He cuts in mid-air.
- 1:46:17Two outs. LaFleur at second base. A two strike count on Stobbs.
- 1:46:22A pitch from Umberger. Trong on and missed outside. Rusty went fishing. Umberger strikes out the side.
- 1:46:30The Tigers in the sixth. No runs. One error. One man left.
- 1:46:35After five and a half innings it's the Tigers sixth. The Rangers won.
- 1:46:40Plymouth announces a breakthrough in American automobiles. New Plymouth Horizon.
- 1:46:46The car you can drive in comfort and confidence on any kind of road.
- 1:46:53Horizon gives you superb traction and stability because it's the first American made car of its size with front wheel drive.

- 1:47:09And Horizon has improved mileage figures on cars produced since March 6, 1978.

- 1:47:24Your mileage may differ. Yet Horizon is base price to just $37.06 excluding taxes and destination charges.
- 1:47:32Anytime you want to go anywhere, the Horizon can handle it.
- 1:47:39Now at your grid of Detroit, Chrysler Plymouth dealers.
- 1:47:52Sixth run, the Tigers lead as we move to the bottom of the seventh inning here at Arlington Stadium. Mark Fidrich against John Matlock in game two of the short two game series tomorrow night.
- 1:48:05Tigers come back just one more time to Arlington and that will be in July just before the All-Star break.
- 1:48:12The Tigers playing only five games down here.
- 1:48:19The line catcher Jim Sunberg to lead it off against Rosie in the sixth inning, only the second time up in the ballgame for Sunberg.
- 1:48:26He bounced out other places to Thompson his first time up.
- 1:48:36Wind up by Rose with the pitch to Sunberg.
- 1:48:42The Tigers lead talking about Herman Munson and Carlton Fisk and then they'll work in Butch Weinecker and overlook this young man who became a good hitter in the latter stages last year as a foul to the right of the plate.
- 1:48:59As good a receiver as you'll find and a great throwing arm.
- 1:49:10The Tigers swing to the left side on Sunberg. The two strike pitch from Rosie.
- 1:49:15He is called out on strike.
- 1:49:18Sunberg looks to the breaking ball that time.
- 1:49:21That's the third strikeout for Rosemont.
- 1:49:27Dave has not gone beyond six innings so far this year. Six innings the last couple of times out in spring training.
- 1:49:37Dave Mike Hargrove.
- 1:49:400-1 for Mike. He bounced out the first in the first inning then drove in the Rangers' run and the third with a long sacrifice fly.
- 1:49:48In the leadoff spots Hargrove flourished as the leadoff hitter last season. A little low for ball one.
- 1:50:04Strong left hand batter with a career average over 300. There's a line drive.
- 1:50:09A one hop knocked down by Weinecker. He picks it up. Got him.
- 1:50:13Rue had to play that one off his chest. That ball was tagged and it sank just before reaching Weinecker.
- 1:50:20It hit in front of the glove, came up, bounced off his chest but not too far in front for him to recover.
- 1:50:25There are two down on the Rangers' sixth inning.
- 1:50:30And that brings up Kampi Kampaneras.
- 1:50:34Rod Laformade, a fine running catch above the shoe tops on a sinking liner from Kampi in the third.
- 1:50:40Low ball on Kampaneras.
- 1:50:51Kavich from Rosemont. Ground ball to the left side.
- 1:50:54He's got it. Throws. He got him. And a one, two, three inning again for Rosema after six innings of play.
- 1:51:01It's still the Tigers' sixth. The Rangers' one.
- 1:51:04President Carter told America today the high level of oil imports and the increasing rate of inflation are the two major threats to the health of the nation's economy.
- 1:51:13Carter appealed to Americans to battle inflation by voluntarily curbing wage and price increases and the use of foreign oil.
- 1:51:21He rejected resorting to wage and price control rules.
- 1:51:24In Michigan, officials say two bears from Ypsilanti and one from Ann Arbor were killed today when a bus carrying members of the Ypsilanti Bears Club crashed in Georgia.
- 1:51:34Georgia State Police say about 40 other youths and chaperones were injured in the crash, which took place as the group headed for Disney World in Florida.
- 1:51:44State Representative Monty Jorves, who has been convicted on embezzlement charges in an Oakland County Circuit Court, says he will not, in his words, walk away from his job.
- 1:51:56This has been a news update from the WJR Newsroom.
- 1:52:21This broadcast is made possible by the Detroit Baseball Club and the American League and is intended for the private use of our listening audience.
- 1:52:28Re-broadcast or other use of this play-by-play is prohibited unless prior consent is received from WJR Detroit, the Detroit Tiger Baseball Club, and the American League.
- 1:52:38The announcers for this broadcast are selected and employed by WJR Radio and the Detroit Tiger Baseball Club.
- 1:52:45The Tigers coming to bat here on the top of the seventh inning with a five-run lead, 6-1 over the Texas Rangers.
- 1:52:51Jason Thompson to lead it off and back for the play-by-play. Here's Ernie Harwell.
- 1:52:55Thank you, Paul. Here we go now. Jason is stepping in. He scored a run after a walk, but he does not have a hit tonight.
- 1:53:03Humbarger, the tall left-hander, wheels into action and the pitch is a slow curve over for his strike.
- 1:53:10Humbarger has been brilliant since he took over. He's about only one runner. That was a lapour reaching first on the Arabai Caponari.
- 1:53:18Strike called a fast ball on the outside corner. He got the first man he pitched to on a bounce-out.
- 1:53:25That was Whitaker at the end of the fifth inning, and he struck out everybody in the sixth.
- 1:53:32Tigers lead 6-1 in the seventh. Here's a foul ball right down below it, and the counties strike two.
- 1:53:47Cautran and May have faced the Tiger hitting attack with three hits apiece.
- 1:53:52One of May's blows is a home run with two men on. Humbarger in the back shit again.
- 1:53:59There's a foul that'll drift back of the Tiger dugout into the seat. The counties still strike two on Jason Thompson.
- 1:54:09Medich started. He went four and two-thirds innings. Humbarger came on to the fifth.
- 1:54:13Rose must have been in there all the way for the Tigers.
- 1:54:20Humbarger checking his sign. Works again. The pitch. Jason takes the curve outside.
- 1:54:25Texas scored first. They got a run in the third on a single by Wills.
- 1:54:29Easto second went to third on the bounce-out and came home with a sacrifice by Hargrove.
- 1:54:35Then the Tigers got two in the fourth and four runs in the fifth inning.
- 1:54:40Wind up the pitch. He swings and misses. That's another strikeout for Humbarger.
- 1:54:47Here's fourth. Steve Kemp will be the hitter.
- 1:54:53The Tigers got two in the fourth inning on a walk to Thompson. A single by Clarkland.
- 1:55:04After Thompson went to second on a bounce-out by Kemp, scored him.
- 1:55:08And then May doubled and Trammel knocked the run in with a single.
- 1:55:13Then May hit a three-run homer to spark the fifth inning. There's a strike call on Kemp.
- 1:55:18Four of the three-run homer by May in that fifth. Two walks and a single by Clarkland that scored a run.
- 1:55:25Here's the strike one that had been. It is a ball outside.
- 1:55:30Humbarger with a new confidence this year. He belonged to Texas and went to Oakland and the Rangers got him back.
- 1:55:39Swing and a foul fly lifted out of play. Swung late. The ball drifting in the left field seat.
- 1:55:44One and two, the count on Kemp.
- 1:55:49Walks hurt Maddett. He walked four men and three of those that scored runs.
- 1:55:54Here's the pitch. Swing and a miss. There's another strikeout. Humbarger blowing them down.
- 1:56:03Five strikeouts. The last five men retired and then out on strike.
- 1:56:08Ernie, we checked the rule book and I was in error earlier when Billy Hunter wanted to change pitchers while Milt May was batting.
- 1:56:17I said he had to throw one pitch. He cannot make a second trip while the same batter is batting.
- 1:56:24There's a pitch in too close and he hits Clarkland with a change up pitch.
- 1:56:29And May will be the batter now. He has a perfect night, a single, a double, and a homerun.
- 1:56:35The wording in the rule book says the manager or coach is prohibited from making a second visit to the mound while the same batter is at bat.
- 1:56:46So it's not a matter of one pitch at all.
- 1:56:51Well here's Milt taking a practice cut. He's had a big night at the plate.
- 1:56:56Milt drove in five runs last year in a game against Seattle. He's driven in three in this game.
- 1:57:03Kuygas laid him six to one. It's the seventh inning in Texas.
- 1:57:09Swinging a bounding ball to second.
- 1:57:11Milt has it. Here's the flip over to Hargrove and the side retired.
- 1:57:15The first time that May has been out in the game.
- 1:57:18No runs, no hits, no errors, one man left. We go to the last half of the seventh inning. The Kuygas six and the Ragers one.
- 1:57:27When an oil well comes in, it's a big deal. Maybe not exactly like you've seen in the movies, but it's a big deal.
- 1:57:35Approximately nine out of ten exploratory wells build with dry holes. So when you hit one after all that time, money, and sweat, it's really something.
- 1:57:44It's a big deal even though a lot of the oil you've discovered will never get out of the ground.
- 1:57:48You see traditional methods still leave a lot of the oil in the ground.
- 1:57:52But now Marathon's developed the Marathon process, designed to get a lot more oil out of existing wells, oil you could never get before.
- 1:58:01Marathon invested a lot of earnings over the last few years to make the Marathon process happen, because it's another way of doing it better.
- 1:58:09We got together, we got together, we got together to do it better.
- 1:58:27And we did it.
- 1:58:57While the folks here at the stadium in Arlington standing the old seventh inning stretch is underway, the Tigers have six runs and eight hits to nowhere.
- 1:59:16The Rangers one run, three hits, and one error. Roachman's gone all the way for the Tigers.
- 1:59:22Medich started for the Rangers and Humbarga relieved him in the fifth inning.
- 1:59:27The Yankees lost tonight in their game in Milwaukee. The Milwaukee Brewers continue to do some heavy bombing.
- 1:59:34They got nine runs on 11 hits and beat the Yankees nine to six.
- 1:59:38Chicago whip Dorado today nine to five. Seattle to Oakland, no report on that one.
- 1:59:43We've got the pitchers now, Paul against Browberg. Minnesota to California, no report, but the pitchers are Erickson and Gastonci.
- 1:59:51In the National League, the Cubs beat New York 4-2, Montreal, Philadelphia rained out, San Diego defeated Atlanta 3-2, and San Francisco leading Cincinnati 3-2 in the eighth inning.
- 2:00:04Houston leads Los Angeles 1-0 in the last half of the eighth. Here's Al Oliver at the plate, and he swings and misses on a Roachman changeup.
- 2:00:17Oliver has bounced a second and had a bump single, one of the three hits off Rosie.
- 2:00:25It's a ball low in the dirt, one and one.
- 2:00:36Outfield straight away on the former Pittsburgh Pirate Al Oliver. Left hand about a-waiting, he takes the ball outside.
- 2:00:48Humbugger has been super sharp in relief, relieving Medics. Roachman pitching on the mound right now has been in there for the full distance. There's a foul fly on the third base side and a county 2-2 on Oliver.
- 2:01:0613,764 of the state attendance this evening. So again tomorrow the Tigers send Cedric to the mound against Natalyn. Bounding ball up the middle under the glove of Roachman.
- 2:01:20A sharp ground single in the second. Oliver gets his second hit here, Ricky's hit now with a double and a fly to right. Roachman facing the heavy part of Billy Hunter's batting order.
- 2:01:43And the Tigers start to get their bullpen stirring a little bit. Hiller and Foucault begin to heat up.
- 2:01:51Down in the left field corner. Outfield bending around the left on this. One of the power hitters in midgeting baseball, Ricky Ziss. Oliver at first base not taking much of a lead and the pitch is in too close on Ricky.
- 2:02:12Thompson holding over there with Oliver at first base. Tigers lead 6-1 it's the seventh inning. Opening game of the two game set down here in Texas.
- 2:02:23Now Rosie checks out his time with Milkma a real low back of the plate. Bounding ball to third maybe to Mankowski and a wet at the one relay to Thompson.
- 2:02:32Double play for the Tigers. Two for the play to one on the hard bound to Mankowski off the bat of Ziss. Two out nobody on that will bring up Toby Hara.
- 2:02:47Toby with a fly to right he's headed into fourth out to the second base. Most of the time, Roachman's been getting the opposition to hit the ball into the dirt.
- 2:02:59Fly ball is the one that Ziss lifted to right field back in the fourth inning.
- 2:03:08Right hander against the right handed. Hara cuts and misses on the fast ball toward the outside.
- 2:03:25Rosie ready delivers it is a ball into close. All of them appreciate the message from Mr. Bob Sullivan. Tigers scout in Grand Rapids.
- 2:03:38The ever alert Mr. Sullivan there's a ball outside two and one and mentor of the man on the mound. Absolutely. Imagine he's thoroughly tuned into this one.
- 2:03:51Tigers lead six to one seven inning two out none on the Rangers.
- 2:04:00Well, Roachman is taking a little more time looks to get his side. Here's the motion in the pitch.
- 2:04:07Swing at a bounding ball up the middle and may get through with a good deep grab at the second corner Thompson.
- 2:04:12He got it. What a play by Lou. He caught that ball in short center field. A hard grounder up the middle and takes a hit away from Hara.
- 2:04:21Good stall but in the dirt and Thompson had to scoop it up. No runs. One hit. No errors. Nobody left. At the end of seven in Texas Tigers six Rangers won.
- 2:04:35I got a piece on my fingers. I'm always under the hood. But it wouldn't change places with anyone else. Even if I could.
- 2:04:44I've worked on every car big and small. Every kind of engine too. There's one thing that applies to them all. Whether they're old or new.
- 2:04:51You can't buy better cars than champions. You can't buy better cars than that.
- 2:05:00Champions are number one in the world. They're number one in your car. Some folks don't mind working in a big place. Being part of a team.
- 2:05:09I prefer just me and that engine. Nobody in between. You can't buy better cars than champions. You can't buy better cars no matter where you are than champions.
- 2:05:22Champions are number one in the world. They're number one in your car. No you can't buy better cars for any kind of car than champions. You can't buy better cars no matter where you are than champions. No you can't.
- 2:05:36Radio 76 salutes Detroit Pistons captain Bob Lemire recently awarded the 1978 Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for his outstanding humanitarian achievements in our community.
- 2:05:51Let's follow up the station identification. This is the Detroit Tiger baseball network.
- 2:05:56This is WJR Detroit. Now with less than ten minutes to play in the third period the Flames have scored twice and have moved to within one of the wings.
- 2:06:05Right now it's Detroit four, the Atlanta Flames three.
- 2:06:12Here's Whitaker facing Umbarga and he bounced and misses. Strike one on blue made that brilliant play to end the seventh inning for Texas.
- 2:06:22At the plate Whitaker has walked, bounced short, grounded the second base. 0 for 2.
- 2:06:29He's trying very close on him at third. Umbarga pitches, here's a cut and a miss. Ball dipping down and away and he was fooled by it. Umbarga's fooled them all so far.
- 2:06:46Wind up, he delivers, here's a bounding ball back to Umbarga, scoops it up, flips it over to first to Hargrove and there's one up and one away in the Tiger eighth inning.
- 2:06:57Umbarga came on in the fifth inning, he's allowed only two runners. LaFleur was safe on the air by Campanaris.
- 2:07:07Corcoran was hit by a pitch. Here's Alan Tramble who has fly to right single, drove in a run, his first RBI in his major league career and taken the call third strike.
- 2:07:19Slow curve over, Umbarga brilliant the way he's changing his speed here. Now Kicks high and delivers, here's the fast ball outside.
- 2:07:32He got Tramble in the sixth inning on a big change up. Tigers lead 6 to 1 in the eighth. Change curve ball fouled away into the Tiger dugout.
- 2:07:48One ball, two strikes on young Mr. Tramble. Medich started and gave up all the runs. Now time call by Plano Parmelo.
- 2:08:01I feel he's shallow on Tramble, infield is back. Here it comes, he takes the wide one, that's got away from Umbarga.
- 2:08:102-2 the counter now. Hawthorne with two RBI, May with three and Tramble with one. There's a fly ball that will drift fouled in the seat just behind the Texas bullpen in the right field corner.
- 2:08:25The wind is picking up now, it's bringing in a little cool air with it.
- 2:08:40Here's the motion, the left-hander deals a change up, hit in the air to center. Benekis is there, he one-hands it.
- 2:08:48And that's two down in the Tiger eighth inning. Ron LaFleur without a hit, he bounced three times to second and once to short.
- 2:08:58And the last time up when he hit the ground ball to short there was an error by Campanera.
- 2:09:03The Tigers with a lead in the eighth inning by five runs, six to one. It's a ball outside, ball one.
- 2:09:21Swing a little loop in the right center might drop in, going back is Wills, got his glove on it, can't hang on.
- 2:09:27And it'll be a single for LaFleur, great effort by Bump Wills. He managed to get his glove on the ball and that was all.
- 2:09:35Oh the Tigers get another hit, that'll be their night.
- 2:09:45And here's Mankowski, it is the first hit allowed by Armbarger.
- 2:09:52Mankowski got the first hit off Medich, a single in the first inning.
- 2:10:06LaFleur with an edge at first base gets back. Ron had a stolen base in the sixth inning.
- 2:10:17Now he's got a longer lead over there first, harder of holding on the bag with him.
- 2:10:22And they get back. There's a quick flip by Armbarger, drives him in that direction.
- 2:10:28To Marty Springstead right over the back of first base on top of the play.
- 2:10:33Mankowski waiting at the plate.
- 2:10:37Another throw to first, LaFleur back safely.
- 2:10:41Six runs, nine hits for the Tigers. One run, four hits for the Rangers.
- 2:10:49LaFleur goes back again and this time made it a little more easily.
- 2:10:55Single game here tomorrow night, we hope you'll join us.
- 2:10:58Matlock will pitch for Texas. The bird pittered for the Tigers. Here's a strike call.
- 2:11:05Almost a quick pitch that time. I think the Tigers are going to complain that it was a walk or either a quick pitch,
- 2:11:12but they're not getting anywhere with Umpar Mero.
- 2:11:21Track one count on Mankowski.
- 2:11:24Again, LaFleur lengthens his lead at first base. Does not go. It's a pitch out, but no movement.
- 2:11:32One and one. All the Tigers scoring came in the fourth and fifth inning.
- 2:11:37Two in the fourth, four in the fifth. The Rangers' run scored in the third inning.
- 2:11:45Now the set and the fifth. He swings a rounding ball up the middle. There goes Kapaneris.
- 2:11:51He has it flipped it over to first and Mankowski is out to retire the side.
- 2:11:56No runs on one hit. No errors. One man left. We go to the last half, eighth inning in Texas.
- 2:12:01The Tigers sixth. Rangers won.
- 2:12:06Well, I know that you parents and you youngsters are all interested in what gift days the Tigers have in store for you here in the 1978 season.
- 2:12:15And let me tell you, there are free gift days on the docket.
- 2:12:18Free jacket day on June 4th when the Minnesota Twins will be in town.
- 2:12:23Free helmet day on July 23rd when the Angels are visiting.
- 2:12:27And free t-shirt day on August 6th when the Chicago White Sox come to Tiger Stadium.
- 2:12:33On gift days at Tiger Stadium, every boy and girl 14 or under entering on a gift day full price ticket,
- 2:12:40whether a $6 box seat, $5 reserve, 3 1⁄2 general admission, or $2 bleacher seat ticket, will be given the gift of that day.
- 2:12:48Remember it's jacket day June 4th when the Minnesota Twins, helmet day July 23rd with California visiting,
- 2:12:57and t-shirt day August 6th with the White Sox opposing the Tigers.
- 2:13:13To Rosmar, ready to deal him in in the last half of the eighth inning, he's working on a 6 to 1 lead now.
- 2:13:19Rosie has struck out three, he's not walking anybody, and he's given up a total of four hits.
- 2:13:24The only run came on a leadoff single by Wills and the third he stole second.
- 2:13:30Went to third base on a bounce out and then came home on a sacrifice line.
- 2:13:37Rosmar pitches very much like Fidrick, he likes to get the ball over and he keeps it down.
- 2:13:44As he vans the old Dodger right hander, he used to say that he would just throw the ball over and he needed,
- 2:13:50it didn't bother him too much whether the pitch was inside or outside, he'd aim for the center of the plate
- 2:13:55and then let the little variance take care of itself.
- 2:13:59Here's Claudel Washington, 0 for 2, he struck out and bounced to second base.
- 2:14:04The Reds had better cut some misses on a high hard one.
- 2:14:12Oliver has two of the hits off Rosmar, one for Zisk and one for Wills.
- 2:14:18There's the slider over but low and they count his one and one on Claudel.
- 2:14:28The shut-stop travel moved over to his left now near his second base, the outfield straight up.
- 2:14:34The breaking ball stays low and outside on Washington, 2 and 1.
- 2:14:43Thompson deep at first, fairly near the line, here's the pitch.
- 2:14:47It is wide, the ball three, Rosy's fast ball didn't hit the target.
- 2:14:52To get the scoreboard show tonight, Paul Carey will have all the details of the major league action for you.
- 2:14:59There's a ball high, it's the first walk off Rosmar, as again he seemed to be forcing himself there.
- 2:15:10Here's Benekis stepping up and we've got a nice league final for him.
- 2:15:18Houston, LA, one to nothing, a two-hitter by Richards, Putin takes the loss.
- 2:15:25One run, five hits for Houston, no runs, two hits for Los Angeles.
- 2:15:34That's Houston's first win of the season.
- 2:15:42And down first, that's Washington, Tigers get their bullpen busy again, Foucault and Hiller up for the second time tonight.
- 2:15:53Rosmar delivers, here's a tap, a hit off his foot and the ball bounced down to his third base.
- 2:16:02Tigers got two in the fourth inning, now the third in Fitcher-Medich.
- 2:16:07A walk to Thompson, a bounce out, a single by Cochran got him home, a double by May sent Cochran to third,
- 2:16:16and then Trammell scored him with a single for the Tigers' first two.
- 2:16:21There's a ball low to Benekis, one and one.
- 2:16:25Then the Tigers broke it open in the fifth inning on a one-out walk to Stav, a two-out walk to Kemp,
- 2:16:32a single by Cochran got one in and then May hit a three-run homer to Clomax at four-run third.
- 2:16:39Here's the pitch, he swings and misses.
- 2:16:42That was the slider down around the knee, one and two of the common Benekis.
- 2:16:48Texas has left only one runner on, the Tigers have left eight stranded.
- 2:16:55Washington with a fair-sized lead at first base, Eastlake conservative with a five-run deficit.
- 2:17:02Bounding ball toward the deep short over those Trammell has hit over the Whitaker for one,
- 2:17:06that's all they'll get, good play by Trammell.
- 2:17:08He went deep in the hole and handled the ball neatly, but they didn't have time to get two.
- 2:17:14Benekis is at first, fourth at second base is Washington, and the battle will be Bump Will,
- 2:17:23who has scored the only run for Texas.
- 2:17:26Bump says his dad didn't help him a whole lot until after he got into the major league.
- 2:17:42That Maury has thought of letting him alone, let him go on his own for a while.
- 2:17:45There's a bonnet tip that he misses to strike one.
- 2:17:48One shotting left-hander against Roseland.
- 2:17:54Mankowski in very close on him at third base.
- 2:18:01Now the set, the pitch, it is a cut and a miss.
- 2:18:06And we've got another final, San Francisco hung on to beat Cincinnati.
- 2:18:11At number three to two, LaBelle the winter, Tomlin takes the loss.
- 2:18:18Evans and Whitfield had home runs, so did Clark.
- 2:18:23There's a chopper foul down past first base.
- 2:18:30That makes the Giants now three and one for the year,
- 2:18:34and Cincinnati takes its first loss of the season.
- 2:18:42Los Angeles taking its first loss, that means that Milwaukee is the only unbeaten team now in the major league.
- 2:18:49Here's a ball going outside.
- 2:18:55Milwaukee off to a hot start, they beat the Yanks tonight, that's four and all for the Brewers.
- 2:19:01They've done it with big bats, but they got held under ten runs tonight.
- 2:19:05Yeah, moral victory for the Yankee pitching staff.
- 2:19:09Here's the step, the pitch, foul out of play.
- 2:19:14One and two to count on him.
- 2:19:17Bump Wills about here, we're in the eighth inning, the Tigers have a lead six to one over the Rangers.
- 2:19:23The Rangers have added about a little over 5,000 seats to the capacity here in this ballpark.
- 2:19:29They've built an upper deck behind the plate.
- 2:19:33Line shot, they set the field, he reached out, that looked like a hanging curve to me,
- 2:19:38and he reached out at about an eye-high pitch and ripped it over the second base.
- 2:19:45Wills gets his second hit, and the Rangers have two men on.
- 2:19:50They trail six to one in the eighth inning, there's one man down, and the batter will be Jim Sunberg.
- 2:19:58First outing for the Ros negotiations.
- 2:20:00That's pulled off right away, 2-2, frames and 10 majority seats,
- 2:20:04but that will be a good box going away by 1 and 2 points.
- 2:20:09The Rangers starting down today, anyway.
- 2:20:13to one in the eighth inning.
- 2:20:14There's one man down and the
- 2:20:15batter will be Jim Sunberg.
- 2:20:25First outing for Roseman.
- 2:20:32And he pitched only 20 innings
- 2:20:33this spring.
- 2:20:35Last time he worked was on the
- 2:20:37eighth or the fourth at
- 2:20:38Columbus against Cincinnati.
- 2:20:39When he went six innings.
- 2:20:43He's got work to hold off this
- 2:20:45season. There's a strike call.
- 2:20:51Tigers keeping that bullpen
- 2:20:52active.
- 2:20:55And the breeze getting a little
- 2:20:57stronger blowing in that cool
- 2:20:58air from Sutterfield.
- 2:21:02Two men on one man down.
- 2:21:04High pop up. Back of short.
- 2:21:06The infield play rule is now
- 2:21:07in vogue.
- 2:21:08Campbell is under the ball.
- 2:21:09Makes the catch.
- 2:21:13That'll make it two down.
- 2:21:15And the bring up the top of the
- 2:21:17order hard road.
- 2:21:19Here's a fellow who goes to all
- 2:21:20kind of generations.
- 2:21:22Very much like Harry the Hat
- 2:21:23Walker used to.
- 2:21:29This is a tough one.
- 2:21:30He's got to be a tough guy.
- 2:21:36Fixed up the dirt.
- 2:21:37Takes a couple of swings.
- 2:21:40And he'll step back and then
- 2:21:41he'll pull with his batting
- 2:21:43helmet.
- 2:21:45And he'll not get any spikes.
- 2:21:51Hold his batting glove.
- 2:21:56Almost by the numbers.
- 2:21:57Left hand about already.
- 2:21:59Two on and two out.
- 2:22:01Rosie steps and pitches.
- 2:22:03It's a strike.
- 2:22:04He got a slider across.
- 2:22:08Matter of semantics but Rosemar
- 2:22:10throws a slider instead of the
- 2:22:11curve.
- 2:22:15Most baseball people referred
- 2:22:17almost any breaking pitch.
- 2:22:18Those are curved.
- 2:22:19There's a ball low.
- 2:22:20One on one.
- 2:22:23That is in a general shot of the
- 2:22:24way.
- 2:22:25One and one now the count on
- 2:22:26Hargrove.
- 2:22:28Two on two out Tigers lead six
- 2:22:30to one Texas fighting in the
- 2:22:31eighth inning.
- 2:22:32First of a two game set down
- 2:22:34here in Arlington.
- 2:22:36Here it comes.
- 2:22:37He swings at a batting ball right
- 2:22:38at first.
- 2:22:39Thompson.
- 2:22:40It's bounce away from him and
- 2:22:41the bases are loaded.
- 2:22:45That's all bobbled by Thompson.
- 2:22:48Off his step.
- 2:22:49Bounce almost all the way to
- 2:22:50second base.
- 2:22:51It'll be an arrow charge to
- 2:22:52Jason.
- 2:22:53That's the first Tiger missed
- 2:22:55few of the game and sets up a
- 2:22:57base is loaded situation with
- 2:22:59cap and there is you up next.
- 2:23:03So what would have been the
- 2:23:04third out and said loads of bases
- 2:23:08here.
- 2:23:11And let's see nobody's come out
- 2:23:13of the dugout yet for Texas.
- 2:23:17Billy Hunter may want to use a
- 2:23:18punch at it.
- 2:23:19Billy Hunter may want to use a
- 2:23:21punch at it.
- 2:23:26Nobody out of that dugout.
- 2:23:32The block I believe is over
- 2:23:34there getting a bat now.
- 2:23:40It looks like dirty Kurt's going
- 2:23:41to come out.
- 2:23:43Yesterday.
- 2:23:47He's at the on deck.
- 2:23:48He's still adjusting his
- 2:23:49batting.
- 2:23:52I can see whether it's been in
- 2:23:55action so far this year.
- 2:23:58He has one game.
- 2:24:00It's a long scene.
- 2:24:02Oh it's going to be a long
- 2:24:03I beg your pardon.
- 2:24:06And he has not been in action.
- 2:24:09John Lawrence the former
- 2:24:11Cleveland Indian player has not
- 2:24:13been in action so far.
- 2:24:15He's been in action.
- 2:24:18This will be his first time up
- 2:24:20as a Ranger.
- 2:24:27With Cleveland last year he
- 2:24:28batted two forty two.
- 2:24:32Lawrence is batting for
- 2:24:33the first time.
- 2:24:46That's kind of out of the play
- 2:24:47Roseman trouble now the bases
- 2:24:49are loaded.
- 2:24:54Eighth inning Tigers lead six
- 2:24:56to one.
- 2:24:57They are two down.
- 2:24:58Texas got to get back in this
- 2:25:01one.
- 2:25:02Rose has gone all the way.
- 2:25:07Let's stand about in John
- 2:25:09Lawrence been at the plate and
- 2:25:11he takes a strike.
- 2:25:12That ball over that was about
- 2:25:20Thirty one year old veteran
- 2:25:21Lawrence.
- 2:25:22The first thing.
- 2:25:28Now that and the pitch he
- 2:25:30swings as a fly ball to right.
- 2:25:33Not the court then there has it
- 2:25:35and the inning is over.
- 2:25:37The Rangers threatened but they
- 2:25:39cannot score.
- 2:25:43No runs on the one hit a walk
- 2:25:45one error three runners on left
- 2:25:47on the base.
- 2:25:48We go to the ninth inning in
- 2:25:49the game.
- 2:25:52The Tigers six Rangers one.
- 2:25:57The Detroit Red Wings have just
- 2:25:58won their first Stanley Cup
- 2:26:00playoff game in Atlanta
- 2:26:01defeating the Flames five to
- 2:26:02three on a last second open net
- 2:26:04goal by Andre Saint Laurent
- 2:26:06again final score Detroit five
- 2:26:08Atlanta three.
- 2:26:13Jim Mason goes to shortstop now
- 2:26:16for the Rangers the Tigers
- 2:26:17have a lead over the Rangers by
- 2:26:19a score of six to one.
- 2:26:24Caught them with two RBI May
- 2:26:26with three on a home run and
- 2:26:28the camel with one.
- 2:26:29They have been made.
- 2:26:30No they have produced the Tiger
- 2:26:32runs this evening.
- 2:26:34Left hander against the left
- 2:26:35hander stop waiting.
- 2:26:36He's without a hit so far.
- 2:26:38Had a walk and swings and
- 2:26:41passes away.
- 2:26:42Back in the play.
- 2:26:43Rusty and the Tigers have a
- 2:26:44lead over the Rangers by a
- 2:26:45second base in the first.
- 2:26:47He's by the right in the third
- 2:26:49row off and scored a run the
- 2:26:51fifth inning and struck out
- 2:26:53Humbarger Fandon in the sixth
- 2:26:56Humbarger have worked as
- 2:26:58worked on the mound since the
- 2:26:59fifth inning.
- 2:27:00We're leaving the start of
- 2:27:01medic left hander pitches the
- 2:27:05curve ball gets rusty
- 2:27:07swinging and it's like to cool
- 2:27:12the evening now in Texas.
- 2:27:15It was a very pleasant day.
- 2:27:17Nice and warm but the coolness
- 2:27:19has come in with a darkness.
- 2:27:21Here's the pitch in tight under
- 2:27:24the ten and the count is one and
- 2:27:26two on top.
- 2:27:32Humbarger pitches fastball over
- 2:27:35but it's low to two.
- 2:27:37I'll feel is straight up on
- 2:27:40rusty.
- 2:27:46There's a wide curve from the
- 2:27:48left center the Tiger left hand
- 2:27:49batters still staying in there.
- 2:27:51They've been looking at this
- 2:27:52left hand pitch since the
- 2:27:53fifth inning.
- 2:27:57Here's the pitch he took it in
- 2:27:59too close.
- 2:28:01The big young right hander Lynn
- 2:28:02Barker working now in the
- 2:28:04Texas bullpen.
- 2:28:08That's the first walk off
- 2:28:09Humbarger.
- 2:28:10He's hit a man and he's got
- 2:28:11five.
- 2:28:14His face and Thompson picked up
- 2:28:17the walk but does not have a
- 2:28:18hit he's over three.
- 2:28:20Fly to that bounce the first
- 2:28:22and struck out.
- 2:28:26I'll forget the other scores
- 2:28:28will be on the scoreboard show
- 2:28:29with Paul and the game's over.
- 2:28:31It's a strike.
- 2:28:32He checked his swing.
- 2:28:39I feel straight away on the
- 2:28:41Thompson.
- 2:28:43I go playing behind the runners
- 2:28:44started first base.
- 2:28:46Now the set by Humbarger the
- 2:28:48pitch is a curve that was in
- 2:28:50close and he backed him off one
- 2:28:52to one.
- 2:28:53That's the same pitch that gets
- 2:28:55quaffing in the seven inning
- 2:28:57out of a change up curve ball in
- 2:28:59close.
- 2:29:02We have a call up there.
- 2:29:04Go to the.
- 2:29:06We have a match.
- 2:29:09That's the outside of the plate.
- 2:29:11Jason didn't come very close to
- 2:29:12that one.
- 2:29:14Track to the count one ball and
- 2:29:15two strikes.
- 2:29:18Forget the Tigers will be home
- 2:29:19next Monday.
- 2:29:20They'll be battling the
- 2:29:21White Sox are off to a great
- 2:29:22start.
- 2:29:24A power laden ball club under
- 2:29:25manager Bob Lemon.
- 2:29:26We hope you'll be out there to
- 2:29:27see the Tigers in action.
- 2:29:29It's a day game at one thirty
- 2:29:32outside.
- 2:29:33He almost won the veteran but
- 2:29:34resisted the temptation to do
- 2:29:37the White Sox are in town for
- 2:29:38two games and the Tigers go to
- 2:29:40Cleveland come back for the
- 2:29:41weekend to play Texas.
- 2:29:45That's my own bar.
- 2:29:46Delivered is a playing in a
- 2:29:48missed he's talking about
- 2:29:50him with a fastball.
- 2:29:51That's the six strikeout for
- 2:29:53Humbarger.
- 2:29:54He's victimized Thompson twice
- 2:29:57is Steve Camp.
- 2:29:58He's struck out twice.
- 2:30:00Medich got him wants an
- 2:30:01embargo got him on.
- 2:30:03He's also about to the picture
- 2:30:05and draw the law.
- 2:30:06Then they blow a part of the
- 2:30:08batting order.
- 2:30:09There's been this productive
- 2:30:10part for the Tigers namely a
- 2:30:12corporate in May who had six
- 2:30:14hits between them.
- 2:30:17Six hits in seven official
- 2:30:20trips.
- 2:30:21Tigers lead six to one in the
- 2:30:23ninth inning.
- 2:30:24Well the first and the stop was
- 2:30:27almost called out.
- 2:30:29He's got a struggle back there.
- 2:30:36I get the larger lead with
- 2:30:38hardball playing behind him.
- 2:30:42Dave Kemp looks at a breaking
- 2:30:44ball high ball on.
- 2:30:46He's got a little bit of a
- 2:30:47back and he'll go as far as his
- 2:30:51pitching will take him.
- 2:30:53It's a strike called a fastball
- 2:30:55over.
- 2:31:01Medich did not last through half
- 2:31:05the game here tonight as a
- 2:31:07bombing ball passed the mound a
- 2:31:08short Mason.
- 2:31:10He's got a little bit of a
- 2:31:11backhand.
- 2:31:13He's got a little bit of a
- 2:31:14backhand as a bombing ball
- 2:31:17passed the mound a short Mason
- 2:31:19flips it over the world one
- 2:31:20relay to first not in time.
- 2:31:23Mason low flow getting the ball
- 2:31:25there Bob and he didn't get him
- 2:31:26too good of a shoveling throw
- 2:31:28Bob got the ball high and could
- 2:31:30not get rid of it in time to
- 2:31:32double up camp at first base.
- 2:31:33So it'll be a simple fourth out
- 2:31:35short to second and here's one
- 2:31:38of the hitting heroes for the
- 2:31:40Tigers Tim Corbin drove in the
- 2:31:42first run.
- 2:31:43He has a perfect night three
- 2:31:45for three has been hit by a
- 2:31:46pitch.
- 2:31:52Two out one on in the ninth
- 2:31:54inning there's a strike he got
- 2:31:55a fastball above the knee.
- 2:31:58Well I'm part of it has looked
- 2:31:59very sharp.
- 2:32:01He's allowed no runs in one
- 2:32:02hit since he took over the
- 2:32:03fifth inning and he struck out
- 2:32:06six.
- 2:32:08Low curve pulls in he swings
- 2:32:09and it has really been breezy
- 2:32:14down their home plate the way
- 2:32:15Humburgers got him cut.
- 2:32:19Six to one though the Tigers in
- 2:32:21the lead in the ninth inning
- 2:32:23and a tough one behind the
- 2:32:24head.
- 2:32:26Back to fifth.
- 2:32:27Swing and he struck out the
- 2:32:28seventh strike out of the
- 2:32:31left hand maneuver.
- 2:32:33No runs on no hits no errors in
- 2:32:35one man left.
- 2:32:36We go to the last half of the
- 2:32:37ninth inning and it's the Tigers
- 2:32:40six the Rangers one.
- 2:32:46You're at bat in the LeBat
- 2:32:47baseball trivia game.
- 2:32:49Here's the pitch which brother
- 2:32:51combination holds the record
- 2:32:53for hitting the most home runs.
- 2:32:55They hit seven hundred sixty
- 2:32:57eight.
- 2:32:58Why not refresh your memory and
- 2:32:59relax with a cool of that beer.
- 2:33:09The answer Hank and Tommy Aaron
- 2:33:11Hank hit seven hundred fifty five
- 2:33:13round trippers and brother Tommy
- 2:33:15hit thirteen in his brief career
- 2:33:17here in baseball really go
- 2:33:19together.
- 2:33:20Always have always will play
- 2:33:22baseball calls for great beer
- 2:33:25for that call for that rooting
- 2:33:28Canada since 1828 distributed by
- 2:33:31the bad importers incorporated
- 2:33:32Buffalo New York for beer at its
- 2:33:34finest.
- 2:33:35Get your hands on the bat.
- 2:33:36It's Canada's number one beer as
- 2:33:39fresh and crisp as where it comes
- 2:33:41from.
- 2:33:54Rosmer trying for that ninth
- 2:33:56inning to come to the game.
- 2:33:58He's got a lead of six to one and
- 2:34:01he'll be facing a rather larger
- 2:34:04task here than I think Oliver
- 2:34:06Zisk and Howard a third fourth
- 2:34:08fifth hitters of the Texas
- 2:34:10Rangers.
- 2:34:11I get started for them.
- 2:34:13The Rangers more than the bases
- 2:34:14in the eighth inning on a walk a
- 2:34:16single and an error but could not
- 2:34:18get anybody home.
- 2:34:19And so far the only run is the
- 2:34:21one that came in a third single
- 2:34:23by Wilkes stolen base about
- 2:34:25and a sacrifice playoff to that
- 2:34:27of Hargrove Tigers got two in the
- 2:34:31fourth inning on a walk to
- 2:34:32Thompson a bounce out a single
- 2:34:34by Boston got one in a double by
- 2:34:36May that caught for the 30
- 2:34:39by Samuel they scored four more
- 2:34:41in the fifth inning on a couple
- 2:34:43of walks in a single by
- 2:34:44Boston to get one in and then
- 2:34:45may unloaded a three one moment.
- 2:34:48So here we go the ninth inning
- 2:34:49and I'll have a bath.
- 2:34:51He takes a curve into close from
- 2:34:54my Rosie Ball one out of there
- 2:34:56with two for three one of them
- 2:34:58but single man Kelsky and close
- 2:35:00running this time and the pitch

- 2:35:04base he bubbles it in front of
- 2:35:05him picks it up for the first.
- 2:35:07He got him all his one down and
- 2:35:10let's see if it's time for a
- 2:35:11station break.
- 2:35:12The ball briefly for station
- 2:35:14identification.
- 2:35:15This is a Detroit Tiger

- 2:35:23by Hextall and an open net score
- 2:35:25with a second left by Saint
- 2:35:26Laurent.
- 2:35:27The Red Wings have defeated
- 2:35:29Atlanta five to three again
- 2:35:31Detroit five Atlanta three
- 2:35:33designated hitter Richie Zisk at
- 2:35:36the plate takes a ball outside
- 2:35:38ball one he doubled in the
- 2:35:42second inning fly to right and
- 2:35:44then hit into a double play

- 2:35:50on Richie and full call for the
- 2:35:54third straight inning of
- 2:35:55working in the Tiger both
- 2:35:56fans this takes in too close
- 2:35:59two and one.
- 2:36:05Toby Harrow waiting on deck now
- 2:36:09the motion in the pitch bow back

- 2:36:55that may be out of here.
- 2:36:57Get the back it's gone.
- 2:36:58A home run by Zisk in the
- 2:37:01left field six to make it.

- 2:37:40fourth off the second bounce the
- 2:37:42second as they ball in close
- 2:37:47ball one.

- 2:38:17No and away in the county two
- 2:38:19and one now on Toby Harrow.
- 2:38:25Don't forget the scoreboard show
- 2:38:26with Paul Kerry all the other
- 2:38:28scores laid out for you.
- 2:38:32Well those my husband's sign
- 2:38:33from May and the young right
- 2:38:35handed pitches it is a strike
- 2:38:37the fighter on the outside
- 2:38:38corner to do some of the paying
- 2:38:44umpires disagreeing with the
- 2:38:46official arbiter on that one.
- 2:38:49Mr. Merrill is the boss here's
- 2:38:53the pitch he swings it's a
- 2:38:54bounding ball wide appeared

- 2:40:29A lot of oil never gets out of
- 2:40:30the ground.
- 2:40:32Not because it hasn't been
- 2:40:33discovered but simply because
- 2:40:35there hasn't been any way to get
- 2:40:36it out because the traditional
- 2:40:38methods for recovering oil can't
- 2:40:40get all the oil out of the well
- 2:40:42for a number of years now the
- 2:40:44engineers and research people at
- 2:40:45Marathon have been getting
- 2:40:47together to see if they could
- 2:40:48find a way to solve that
- 2:40:49problem.
- 2:40:51They figured there must be a way
- 2:40:52to do it better and it turns out
- 2:40:54they were right.
- 2:40:56They've developed the
- 2:40:57Marathloft process which is
- 2:40:58designed to get more a lot of
- 2:41:00existing wells.
- 2:41:02They came up with the
- 2:41:03Marathloft process because they
- 2:41:04got together to do it better and
- 2:41:06they did.
- 2:41:08We got together to do it better
- 2:41:19in Marathon.
- 2:41:25Marathon all come together.
- 2:41:26We got together to do it better.
- 2:41:32Did you know that in a 1974
- 2:41:33regional basketball tournament
- 2:41:34in Sweden this red year old
- 2:41:35basketball team scored 272
- 2:41:38points in one game.
- 2:41:39This is Jim Ford.
- 2:41:40This is WJR Sports.
- 2:41:50Young Dave Rosema managed to go
- 2:41:52all the way despite getting up
- 2:41:53the ninth inning home run to
- 2:41:55Richie Zisk.
- 2:41:56Rosie pitching a six hitter
- 2:41:58tonight as the Tigers win the
- 2:41:59opener of the two game series
- 2:42:01here at Arlington Texas six to
- 2:42:03two and they did it because of
- 2:42:05the bats of Milt May and Tim
- 2:42:07Corcoran tonight both with three
- 2:42:09hits.
- 2:42:10May with three RBIs on his
- 2:42:11three run homer in the fifth
- 2:42:12inning earlier Milt had singled
- 2:42:14and doubled.

- 2:42:21Alan Trammell also driving in a
- 2:42:23Tiger run with a single in the
- 2:42:24fourth inning.
- 2:42:25In the fifth inning Corcoran
- 2:42:27singled in another Tiger run
- 2:42:29and May followed with his three
- 2:42:30run homer that KO'd the
- 2:42:32southern loser Doc Medich who
- 2:42:34gave up all six of the Tiger
- 2:42:36runs and eight of the nine hits.
- 2:42:38Jim Umberger was tough the rest
- 2:42:39of the way but he allowed only
- 2:42:42one hit in working the last four
- 2:42:44and a third innings striking out
- 2:42:46seven Tigers hitting a batter
- 2:42:47and walking but one.

- 2:43:06The game took two hours 28
- 2:43:08minutes to be completed.
- 2:43:09A crowd of 13,764.
- 2:43:13Tomorrow night game two of the
- 2:43:14two game series finds the bird
