Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Hope that you're having a good
- 0:17day. Today we are in Psalm one O 8.
- 0:21Psalm one O 8 And this is a Psalm of David and this Psalm,
- 0:26it is a very triumphant for the most part, but there's something
- 0:30that David recognizes here and really you don't see it till the
- 0:33end of the Psalm. So I'm putting the cart before
- 0:36the horse a little bit here. But that's right.
- 0:38What David realizes in this Psalm is that God does not do
- 0:44everything that we want on our timetable.
- 0:48Sometimes he does what he wants in his own time.
- 0:51And as a result of that, there will be portions of our life
- 0:56where we are fearful and we go, God, here's what you've
- 0:59promised, but here's what I'm experiencing.
- 1:02And so in between the promise and the experience, how do we
- 1:07react? How do we what, what do we
- 1:11believe in those moments when we go God, I'm not right now
- 1:15experiencing what you have promised.
- 1:19And so I believe your heart will be encouraged through this time
- 1:22in the word. I know even reading through the
- 1:25Psalm a little bit, my heart was even encouraged.
- 1:27But verse #1 of Psalm one O 8 says this.
- 1:31My heart is confident. God, I will sing, I will sing
- 1:35praises with the whole of my being.
- 1:38Wake up harp and liar, I will wake up the dawn.
- 1:42I will praise you, Yahweh among the peoples.
- 1:45I will sing praises to you among the nations.
- 1:48For your faithful love is higher than the heavens, and your
- 1:51faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
- 1:54God, be exalted above the heavens, and let your glory be
- 1:58over the whole earth. Save with your right hand and
- 2:02answer me so that those you love may be rescued.
- 2:07God has spoken in his sanctuary. I will celebrate.
- 2:11I will divide up Shechem. I will apportion the valley of
- 2:15Saketh. Gilead is mine, Manasseh is
- 2:18mine, and Ephraim is my helmet. Judah is my scepter.
- 2:23Moab is my wash basin. I'll throw my sandal on Edom.
- 2:27I shout and triumph over Felicia.
- 2:31Who will bring me to the fortified city?
- 2:33Who will lead me to Edom? God, haven't you rejected us?
- 2:40God, you do not March out with our armies.
- 2:43Give us aid against the foe, for human help is worthless.
- 2:48With God, we will perform valiantly.
- 2:51He will trample our foes. So here, even as David is going
- 2:57through, there's like portions of it where I could imagine as
- 3:02David is writing this Psalm, he's like, all right, I need at
- 3:06least three people to sing the song.
- 3:10And so it'll kind of be like a Broadway musical.
- 3:13And, you know, person one will be like David, person number 2
- 3:18will be God, and then like person #3 will be, you know,
- 3:22representative of Israel. And so with these three people
- 3:26that are speaking, or in this case singing, we will
- 3:30communicate the truth of this. And so it's a it's a really
- 3:33great piece of literature, like poetic literature as we look at
- 3:37it. But let's walk through first
- 3:39with verses one through 6 in the section where David is singing
- 3:45and the hope that he has even in the middle of I have not yet
- 3:51seen God do what he's promised that he will do.
- 3:55So he says in verse one, my heart is confident God, I will
- 4:00sing, I will sing praises. He says my my heart, it's
- 4:05standing up like I am, I am proud, I'm excited.
- 4:08I am definitely sure that you are going to act.
- 4:12I love. In Hebrews Chapter 11, we're
- 4:14told that the one that comes to God must believe that he exists
- 4:18and that he rewards the ones who diligently seek him.
- 4:23So first posture when you are living in between, perhaps you
- 4:28don't have the finances to be able to or or you don't have the
- 4:33money to be able to meet all of your financial needs for this
- 4:37next, you know, month or the next season of life.
- 4:41And you're going, OK God, I know that you ask me to pray for my
- 4:45daily bread. I know that you have told me
- 4:48that you will supply all of my need according to riches and
- 4:52glory by Christ Jesus God. I need to see that.
- 4:55I need it to be reality. But until God gives you the
- 4:59money or until God alleviates some of the financial burden,
- 5:03you can still have confidence in God and say, God, I'm standing
- 5:08upright in heart because I fully believe you are capable of
- 5:13answering my prayer. And so David here he is
- 5:17confident, not because God has already worked on his behalf,
- 5:20but because he knows who God is. And so he says, God, I fully
- 5:24believe that you will come through for me.
- 5:26He says, I'll sing, I'll sing praises with the whole of my
- 5:30being like my, my glory, the, the thing that I am most proud
- 5:37about me. I am going to praise you with
- 5:41it, if you will. I'm putting my reputation on the
- 5:44line and that people will go man, if God doesn't come
- 5:48through, man. David was stupid.
- 5:50Like he trusted in Yahweh and Yahweh totally let him down.
- 5:54So David says with my whole being, with my glory, with my
- 5:59pride, with my reputation, I'm staking it on you.
- 6:03Are you willing to look foolish if God doesn't come through?
- 6:09I got to tell you, for me, I I'm a little bit of a plotter, a
- 6:12planner. I want everything, you know,
- 6:15just in easy steps where I can see where the path will go, how
- 6:19we'll get there bit by bit, like super, super easily.
- 6:23That's how I want to live my life.
- 6:25But the truth is I've got to be willing to step out in faith to
- 6:28stake my life on the Lord and to say God.
- 6:31I might look a little stupid and people might go, hey, you know,
- 6:34Brian, yeah, like, maybe he might be bright, but he puts too
- 6:39much trust in, like, his whole God thing.
- 6:42And I'd much rather that be said then.
- 6:45Yeah, he's just the most careful planner in the world.
- 6:48And he, you know, doesn't have any, any faith that God can
- 6:52work. He just knows how he can crunch
- 6:55the numbers. And so Brian has confidence in
- 6:57Brian. I want to have confidence in God
- 7:00and put my reputation on him. Verse #2 wake up harp and liar.
- 7:05I will wake up the dawn. He says I'm waking up some
- 7:07instruments and we're going to bring in the sunrise with praise
- 7:10to God. Are you eager to begin praising
- 7:14the Lord with everything that you have here, David, he can
- 7:17play the harp. He can play the liar.
- 7:19He these instruments they're they're home for him.
- 7:22However praising God looks for you.
- 7:24Are you eager to do that? Are you eager to get into the
- 7:27word in the morning? Are you eager to post about the
- 7:29Lord? Are you eager to listen to some
- 7:31godly music and to praise God even as you start off your
- 7:35morning? I encourage you, Wake up the
- 7:37dawn, you know, usher in your day with the praise of God.
- 7:42Verse #3 I will praise you Yahweh among the peoples.
- 7:45I will sing praises to you among the nations.
- 7:50So many people in our lives go throughout all of their days,
- 7:56maybe their work days, their weeks and they don't hear people
- 8:01lifting up the name of the Lord. They don't know that people are
- 8:04grateful to Jesus for saving them.
- 8:06They don't know that people thank the Lord for everything
- 8:10that they have been given. May you and I be the ones that
- 8:13were declaring it that maybe our Co worker or maybe our neighbor
- 8:18or maybe our family member. Maybe they don't believe yet,
- 8:22but may they know that God is praised.
- 8:25He is thanked, He is lauded, He is appreciated.
- 8:29We express gratitude towards Him.
- 8:31May we declare the praise of God to everyone around us then verse
- 8:38#4 for your faithful love is higher than the heavens and your
- 8:43faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
- 8:44He says as tall as the the heavens, the skies are above the
- 8:49earth. That is how much faithful love
- 8:52that has said that covenant steadfast, loyal love.
- 8:55That's how much love he has for us that will never go away.
- 8:59His faithfulness, his consistency reaches all the way
- 9:03up to the clouds and man, I'm certain that we know even more
- 9:08than and David knows here. He didn't know how high the
- 9:11skies were. We do and that is how high our
- 9:15God's love is. Obviously there.
- 9:17There's not a quantifiable limit on the love or the faithfulness
- 9:22of God. It's like, OK, God's good for up
- 9:24to, you know, 30,000 feet and then pass that you're on your
- 9:27own. And that's not what's being said
- 9:28here. This is a poetic way of phrasing
- 9:30God as far as I could possibly imagine.
- 9:34That is how much love and faithfulness that you have.
- 9:39Verse #5 He says God be exalted above the heavens, over and
- 9:44above the skies. He says, I want you to have
- 9:48exaltation over everything. Where the spiritual beings are
- 9:52in the heavens, the skies, I want you to be glorified there
- 9:55that all spiritual beings would recognize you as worthy of
- 9:59praise and obedience and love. And he says in the second part
- 10:03of verse 5, and let your glory be over the whole earth.
- 10:07May all of the inhabitants of the physical realm, humans and
- 10:12and animals and birds and fish, may all of us know how glorious
- 10:18you are. May we recognize your majesty
- 10:21and your dominion. You are in control.
- 10:23You are good to us. You're consistent.
- 10:26May we have that kind of view of our God.
- 10:31It's not God. You know, people might view him
- 10:34like the pizza boy and they're like, listen, God, if you don't
- 10:37get here in 30 minutes, you know my, my pizza is free.
- 10:40I can go on a sin fest if you don't show up and give me what I
- 10:45want on time. That should never be our our our
- 10:49mindset of God. He is sovereign.
- 10:50He's in control. We are the ones that when we
- 10:54come to him with a request, it's not even demanding our own way.
- 10:58We're saying, God, you have proclaimed this to us.
- 11:03Would you be true to your word? And man, that that's a bold
- 11:07statement, but that's what David here over and over again within
- 11:11the Psalms. It's what he says.
- 11:13He says God be faithful to your character.
- 11:17Verse number six, save with your right hand and answer me so that
- 11:21those you love may be rescued. He says God with your strength,
- 11:25your might. That's what's meant here by the
- 11:28right hand. It's not that God is less strong
- 11:33with, you know, his left hand here.
- 11:36It's saying with your might, with your power, I want you to
- 11:40save. I want you to answer me and I
- 11:42want you to rescue those you love.
- 11:45And I love that, that our God, he's not just one.
- 11:49David's not just saying for your honor, would you crush these
- 11:53enemies? He doesn't say because of their
- 11:56awful sins, will you crush our enemies?
- 12:00He actually says because you love us, would you protect us?
- 12:04And that's something that we can cry out to the Lord as well.
- 12:07I think even as I say that though of Jesus on the cross, I
- 12:11think of him in the Garden of Gethsemane, that he who has
- 12:15always been the Father's recipient of the the recipient
- 12:21of the Father's love, Jesus Christ.
- 12:25He asked Father, if it if it be your will, let this cup pass
- 12:28from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but
- 12:31your will be done. And on the cross, Jesus, the one
- 12:35that God has always loved most, was not rescued.
- 12:40So that we, the enemies of God, those that alienated ourselves
- 12:45from God, those that have lived our entire lives apart from him,
- 12:50and who would never have sought God out on our own, He pursued
- 12:55us. And we who hated him, who hated
- 12:59his way, he came and he rescued us and made us the recipients of
- 13:04his love because he did not rescue the Son that he loved on
- 13:09the cross. Man, what an awesome God we
- 13:13serve. Then verse #7 God has spoken in
- 13:16his sanctuary. So if you will, from the throne
- 13:19room, here's the answer to David.
- 13:21God has spoken. I will celebrate.
- 13:25He doesn't even say like I'm going to rescue, I'm going to
- 13:28defeat. He starts off by saying I
- 13:32already know how this is going to go.
- 13:36I already know the end of the story.
- 13:38This isn't going to be difficult for me.
- 13:41I'm going to celebrate and man, I need to ingest and meditate on
- 13:48more of this truth in my life. God is not fighting battles.
- 13:57He he just wins battles. Like read Revelation, see what
- 14:02happens when Jesus, quote UN quote fights.
- 14:06Whatever Jesus does, it happens instantaneously like it's it's
- 14:10one and done. First off, his incredible
- 14:15patience in our lives that he could have chosen to to say, all
- 14:22right, Brian, if you don't walk the line like I'm giving you
- 14:27forgiveness, I'm giving you a new start.
- 14:29I'm giving you a new life, but if you mess up like you're done
- 14:34for. No, God is patient with me day
- 14:36after day after day. But when I think about when
- 14:40Jesus was confronted even by the Judas and the the temple guards
- 14:48in the Garden of Gethsemane and they ask, hey, are you?
- 14:51Are you Jesus? And he says, I am.
- 14:55And John tells us they all fall backwards.
- 14:59That's what happens when Jesus is in a situation or when he
- 15:04comes back in Revelation. There's the armies of the earth
- 15:08that are gathered together against Jesus, against his
- 15:12people that worship him, and they want to eradicate them.
- 15:16And Jesus literally just speaks. He speaks the words of God and
- 15:21the armies of the earth are torn asunder.
- 15:25Like when God goes, he's not saying, oh man, I'm really going
- 15:28to struggle to to achieve a victory.
- 15:32He says I will celebrate. Can you rest in the fact that
- 15:36when God wants to move, it will be definitive, it will be final
- 15:43and it will because for celebration, because our God is
- 15:48always good. He's always right in what he
- 15:50does. He is always just.
- 15:52And so we can celebrate in the works of God even when we are
- 15:57scared. We can know God.
- 15:59The moment that you give the word, things change on your
- 16:04authority. There's a song by Elevation
- 16:06Worship that they put out several years ago called
- 16:09Authority Co, written actually by Brooke Liggert Wood, who's an
- 16:13incredible biblical lyricist. And I, I will attach that song
- 16:19to this episode because I love that song.
- 16:21It's so good. So God says I will celebrate,
- 16:25I'll divide up Shechem. I will apportion the valley of
- 16:28Sucketh. Gilead is mine, Manasseh is
- 16:31mine, and Ephraim is my helmet. Judah is my scepter.
- 16:34So he says I will take care of my people.
- 16:37He says you guys worry about it because you think that you are
- 16:42responsible for keeping Israel safe, but actually way more so
- 16:48than Gilead or Manasseh or Ephraim or Judah belonging to
- 16:51David or belonging to any individual Israelite.
- 16:54He says it all belongs to me. It's my stuff.
- 16:58And so you're like, Oh no, God protect my stuff.
- 17:02And he says no, no, no, this is all mine.
- 17:04And so yes, I will celebrate because I am going to keep safe
- 17:09what is mine. Do you view the things in your
- 17:12life as belonging to you? Like if I view Tabernacle as
- 17:17belonging to Brian and not to God, I can be like, listen, God,
- 17:23I really need you to save this aspect of my church.
- 17:28Or God, I'm really, I'm really concerned or I'm really angry or
- 17:32I'm really sad about this area of the church.
- 17:35And so God, why won't you do something?
- 17:38Don't you realize how much this is affecting me?
- 17:41And I'm certain that the Lord's like, OK, dude, I love you.
- 17:46But actually all of that is mine.
- 17:48And I care about it more than you ever could.
- 17:51But it belongs to me, and I will do what is right with what is
- 17:56mine. And So what a joy that when we
- 17:59recognize we don't own anything, God is the owner of it all.
- 18:04We're just temporary stewards or managers who are overseeing
- 18:09something, and we ought to oversee what we have in a way
- 18:12that is reflective of God's ownership.
- 18:15That we don't view it flippantly, but we also say,
- 18:17this isn't mine. I'm just holding this
- 18:20temporarily because God has placed it in my hands, and the
- 18:23moment that he needs it back, I'm going to give it to him.
- 18:30Pardon me So here what a joy that it belongs to God, and if
- 18:36it belongs to God, God will do what is right with what belongs
- 18:39to Him. Then in verse #9 there is these
- 18:4333 enemy cities or enemy nations against Israel that attacked
- 18:51Israel for hundreds of years. And God says this about these
- 18:56three formidable places. He says Moab is my wash basin,
- 19:00like the thing that I wash my dirty or bathroom hands or my
- 19:05stinky, you know, dust covered, animal refuse covered feet in.
- 19:11Yeah, Moab is my wash basin. They, they are only good for
- 19:16clean cleaning up the gunk. They are not my rival.
- 19:21He says Moab, that's my wash basin.
- 19:23I can take care of them. He says I throw my sandal on
- 19:28Edom. I think often in Hispanic
- 19:31culture there's a reference to throwing the chonkla, you know,
- 19:36the, the chonkleta, the the sandal.
- 19:39And so I've seen so many humorous videos where, you know,
- 19:44Hispanic grandma will take her, her sandal and she'll Chuck the
- 19:48shoe at a dog that's, you know, barking really loudly and isn't
- 19:52supposed to be or something like that.
- 19:54That's the mental picture that I have right here of Edom that God
- 19:59says no, this is just a yapping puppy.
- 20:02They are nothing in comparison to my power.
- 20:06And then he says I shout in triumph over Felicia, that all
- 20:11of these Philistine cities that throughout the life of Seoul,
- 20:17because such difficulties for the children of Israel, God says
- 20:22I shout in triumph over them. He says the moment that I want
- 20:25them to be done, they will be done.
- 20:28And so don't worry about it. I will be victorious.
- 20:34And then he ends this section of God speaking by saying, who will
- 20:37bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to eat him?
- 20:40He says, come on, let's go out, let's battle, let's do it.
- 20:43And so then there's, you know, a person either reflective of
- 20:47David responding to the word of God or Israel responding to the
- 20:51word of God. And they say, God, haven't you
- 20:54rejected us? The answer is no, God has not
- 20:58rejected you. You may be going through hard
- 21:00times, but that doesn't mean that God rejected you.
- 21:02It just means God has not yet said, all right, it's time for
- 21:06me to step in, if you will. There's a part in The Lord of
- 21:11the Rings, which is a book written in the last century.
- 21:15For those that aren't familiar with it, some movies were made
- 21:18in the late 90s, early 2000s by Peter Jackson that that went
- 21:22over them as well. But there's a portion in the
- 21:25book where one of the characters, samewise Gamji, he
- 21:29talks about the fact that in all the best stories, there is a
- 21:34darkness that comes before the dawn.
- 21:37That if there's not the moment that you have before the hero
- 21:43comes in and saves everyone or before you find out if you know
- 21:49Rocky's going to get back up or you know, whatever else have
- 21:52you, there has to be that moment of, of tension before the story
- 21:57is at its best like it, it makes it a great story.
- 22:01Not if everything goes well all the time, but if there's a
- 22:04moment of going, what will happen?
- 22:07And then the hero comes in, then the salvation comes.
- 22:11And I not in a way that God is manipulating, but God as the
- 22:16good storyteller, God as the one in our life that wants us to
- 22:20recognize who he is so that there can be when relationship
- 22:25and love and adoration to him. He has made it so that we go
- 22:30through hard times so that we can see him save he he tells us
- 22:36in it's one of the Kings or Chronicles that the Lord is
- 22:40searching to and fro throughout the whole earth so that he can
- 22:44show himself strong on the behalf of those whose heart is
- 22:50is complete as perfect as turned towards him that they would see
- 22:54him work. So the question in verse 11 God,
- 22:58haven't you rejected us? No, my friend, not at all.
- 23:03He says God, you do not March out with our armies.
- 23:08No, he does. He actually said that in verse
- 23:1010. Who will bring me to the
- 23:12fortified city? That where you go, God is going
- 23:15with you. And when you hurt, God hurts
- 23:18with you. That's what we learned from the
- 23:20story of Saul in Acts Chapter 9 among several other places as
- 23:26well. But that when we hurt, the Lord
- 23:29hurts the the Holy Spirit is there with us.
- 23:31He bears with us even in our infirmities.
- 23:34Jesus knows what it's like to go through the difficulties that
- 23:36you and I go through and he hurts when we hurt.
- 23:39And so realize that God is marching out with you as you go
- 23:42to work today or as you are are dealing with illness like God is
- 23:47with you, and realize that he has not abandoned you.
- 23:51Then in verse #12 here's the prayer.
- 23:54Give us aid against the foe, for human help is worthless.
- 23:59I'll tell you, for, you know, the political situation in
- 24:02America today, people wonder, all right, who's going to give
- 24:06us the the best shot? Who is going to bring us back to
- 24:09a good place as a nation? And the truth is that we pursue
- 24:13righteousness, that we pursue justice.
- 24:16We realize that humans are incapable of doing what truly
- 24:21needs done. That doesn't mean that we don't
- 24:23pursue righteousness as a nation.
- 24:25As Proverbs tells us, righteousness exalts a nation.
- 24:29But sin is a reproach to any people.
- 24:32Though we pursue righteousness as a nation, we realize that it
- 24:36will not come like the good life, the the life that we
- 24:39desire to live. It will not come through human
- 24:42rulers. It's not going to come through a
- 24:45human political party. It comes through the Lord Jesus
- 24:48working in US and transforming us.
- 24:51And as we rely on him, we find victory in Him, and we need His
- 24:55help against the foe of sin and death.
- 24:58That's why Jesus came. We were unable to overcome that
- 25:02foe. And so Jesus died in our place,
- 25:05taking the punishment for our sin, overcoming the grave, and
- 25:08inviting us to follow Him into eternal life through believing
- 25:13in His sacrifice and in His ability and choosing Him as our
- 25:17Lord. And we need His help in the
- 25:20fight against Satan and his demons.
- 25:23That we would choose love, we would choose holiness, we would
- 25:27choose salvation and. And we would choose to walk
- 25:31alongside our brothers and sisters in the Lord in a loving
- 25:34and caring way because the foe wants to divide us and to
- 25:38destroy us and to cause us to walk in anger and hatred and
- 25:44solitude and and distrust of others.
- 25:46So we need God's help in every stinking area of our life.
- 25:51I was going to say every single area, but every stinking area of
- 25:54our life works too, I suppose. And so we need his help because
- 25:59human help is worthless. Humans cannot accomplish in us
- 26:02what God can accomplish in and through us.
- 26:05And then verse 13, this response of hope with God, we will
- 26:09perform valiantly. He will trample our foes.
- 26:14God is the one that is greater than any other, and so we ought
- 26:18to trust in Him and believe in Him.
- 26:21Well, thanks for tuning in today, and I hope Psalm 108 was
- 26:25an encouragement to you. Oh, verse #13 sorry, real quick.
- 26:28With God, we will perform valiantly.
- 26:30He will trample our foes should make you think Genesis chapter
- 26:353, the foe that we have Satan, the serpent, his head is getting
- 26:40crushed by the seed of the woman, Jesus Christ, God in the
- 26:45flesh who trampled our foe and took away his power so that we
- 26:50could be saved. What a great God we serve.
- 26:53Well, look forward to seeing you next Wednesday as we dive into
- 26:56Psalm 109, which is an imprecatory Psalm.
- 27:00And I think we'll we'll have some great stuff that we'll
- 27:02learn in that time together. Thanks for tuning in.
