- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Tuesday, it's the
- 0:1628th of January and good on you for tapping play.
- 0:20Lovely to have your company as we are going to keep on reading
- 0:23through. Oh, this amazing story of Elijah
- 0:27conquering, conquering in glorious fashion with the Lord's
- 0:31help, all of those prophets of Baal.
- 0:34And wow, it didn't end well for them, did it?
- 0:37No, they all went to their death.
- 0:39But you would think after a time like that, Elijah would be just
- 0:43Cocker hoop full of confidence, strutting around with their
- 0:47great victory. But he has one of those very
- 0:50human moments where all of those doubts seem to close in on him.
- 0:56I know you know that feeling because I know that feeling.
- 0:58And it is just what happens to all of us at some time or
- 1:01another. And here we see Elijah, and as
- 1:05he goes through this, we see how God responds to him meeting his
- 1:11needs both physically, practically, and emotionally.
- 1:16So this is a wonderful chapter that we will enjoy together as
- 1:20we hear the journey of God and Elijah after this mountaintop
- 1:24experience, quite literally as we read together First Kings
- 1:28chapter 19. When Ahab got home, he told
- 1:42Jezebel everything Elijah had done, including the way he had
- 1:45killed all the prophets of Baal said.
- 1:48Jezebel sent this message to Elijah.
- 1:51May the gods strike me and even kill me, if by this time
- 1:55tomorrow I have not killed you just as you killed them.
- 2:00Elijah was afraid and fled for his life.
- 2:03He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant
- 2:08there. Then he went on alone into the
- 2:10wilderness, travelling all day. He sat down under a solitary
- 2:15broom tree and prayed that he might die.
- 2:19I've had enough, Lord, he said. Take my life, for I am no better
- 2:24than my ancestors who have already died.
- 2:28Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree.
- 2:32But as he was sleeping an Angel touched him and told him Get up
- 2:37and eat. He looked around and there
- 2:40beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of
- 2:45water. So we ate and drank and lay down
- 2:48again. Then the Angel of the Lord came
- 2:51again and touched him and said, get up and eat some more or the
- 2:56journey ahead will be too much for you.
- 2:59So we got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough
- 3:03strength to travel 40 days and 40 nights to Mount Sinai, the
- 3:08mountain of God. There he came to a cave where he
- 3:12spent the night. But the Lord said to him, What
- 3:17are you doing here, Elijah? Elijah replied, I have zealously
- 3:22served the Lord God Almighty, but the people of Israel have
- 3:27broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and
- 3:31killed every one of your prophets.
- 3:34I am the only one left, and now they're trying to kill me too.
- 3:39Go out and stand before me on the mountain, the Lord told him.
- 3:45And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by and a mighty
- 3:49windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast
- 3:53that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the
- 3:58wind. After the wind there was an
- 4:00earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
- 4:04And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not
- 4:09in the fire. And after the fire there was the
- 4:13sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped
- 4:17his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of
- 4:21The Cave. And a voice said, What are you
- 4:25doing here, Elijah? He replied again, I have
- 4:30zealously served the Lord God Almighty, but the people of
- 4:34Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down
- 4:37your altars, and killed every one of your prophets.
- 4:40I am the only one left, and now they're trying to kill me too.
- 4:45Then the Lord told him, Go back the same way you came and travel
- 4:51to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive there, anoint
- 4:56Hazael to be king of Aram, then anoint Jehu, grandson of Nimshi,
- 5:03to be king of Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaifat from the
- 5:08town of Abel Mahola to replace you as my prophet.
- 5:14Anyone who escapes from Hazael will be killed by Jehu, and
- 5:18those who escape Jehu will be killed by Elisha.
- 5:22Yet I will preserve 7000 others in Israel who have never bowed
- 5:27down to bow or kissed him. So Elijah went and found Elijah
- 5:33son of Shaifat ploughing a field.
- 5:37There were twelve teams of oxen in the field and Elijah was
- 5:40ploughing with the 12th team. Elijah went over to him and
- 5:44threw his cloak across his shoulders and then walked away.
- 5:48Elijah left the oxen standing there, ran after Elijah and said
- 5:52to him, First let me go and kiss my father and mother goodbye,
- 5:56and then I will go with you. Elijah replied, Go on back, but
- 6:02think about what I have done for you.
- 6:05So Elisha returned to his oxen and slaughtered them.
- 6:09He used the wood from the plough to build a fire to roast their
- 6:13flesh. He passed around the meat to the
- 6:15townspeople and they all ate. Then he went with Elijah as his
- 6:22assistant. Our Lord, there is so much in
- 6:35this chapter worthy of celebration of it.
- 6:39Lord, what just stands out to me right now is the way that Elijah
- 6:43responds as Elijah. This prophet, this man of God
- 6:47just walks into his life for the first time.
- 6:50There he is hard at work in his field, and this prophet throws
- 6:54this cloak around his shoulders and his response is immediate,
- 7:00to put down his life with all his plans, everything that is
- 7:04halfway through, doing all his projects that he hasn't finished
- 7:09yet, all those things that he was planning to do with his
- 7:12life. And he follows you.
- 7:15He follows your prophet. Our Lord, help our hearts be
- 7:19that nimble that when you call us whatever else has seemed so
- 7:24important that we can put that down in its place and we can
- 7:28follow You. Lord, if a direction that we are
- 7:32moving in is not one that You would have us move in, then
- 7:36Lord, just prompt us. Show us where Your direction is.
- 7:41And like Elisha, I'll give us the heart to just want to follow
- 7:45You more than our own desires. So we place You first, and we
- 7:52worship You, and we pray all these things in the wonderful
- 7:56saving name of Jesus. Amen.
