- 0:34I'm your host Dustin today, we are back in the book of Bengal,
- 0:37folklore recorded by LOL bihari day.
- 0:40We see a poor but faithful Brahmin who is rewarded with a
- 0:43cooking pot. It is always full and much like
- 0:46the tail from the Azores episode, 109 or Philippines. 145
- 0:51Faith is rewarded and the thief gets a dropping.
- 0:55Some words to know a handy is a small cooking pot.
- 0:59A mood key is a fried dough treat son.
- 1:03Dessa is a dish of Kurds and sugar.
- 1:07Xena Dar is a landholder and as inanna is a place for only women
- 1:12in the house. Okay, let's begin.
- 1:18The Indigent Brahmin. There was a Brahmin who had a
- 1:22wife and four children. He was very poor with no
- 1:27resources in the world. He lived chiefly on the
- 1:29benefactions of the Rich. His gains were considerable.
- 1:33When marriages were celebrated or funeral ceremonies were
- 1:35performed. But as his parishioners did not
- 1:37marry every day. Nor did they die every day?
- 1:40He found it difficult to make two ends meet.
- 1:43His wife often rebuked him for his inability to give her
- 1:46adequate support. And his children often went
- 1:48about naked and hungry, but though poor he was a good man,
- 1:53he was diligent his devotions. There was not a single day in
- 1:56his life in which he did not say his prayers of the state of
- 1:58ours. His Patron deity was the
- 2:01goddess. Durga a consort of Shiva, the
- 2:03Creative Energy of the universe. On no day.
- 2:07Did he either drink water or taste food till he had written
- 2:10in red ink. The name of Durga at least 108
- 2:13times while throughout the day incessantly ordered.
- 2:16The ejaculation odarka odarka have mercy upon me.
- 2:23Whenever he felt anxious on account of his poverty and his
- 2:26inability to support his wife and children.
- 2:28He groaned out. Durga Durga Durga One day, being
- 2:34very sad, he went to a forest, many miles away from the village
- 2:37where he lived and indulging in his grief.
- 2:39He wept bitter tears, he prayed in the following manner.
- 2:44Oh Durga oh mother bhagavati. Won't you make an end to my
- 2:49misery if I was alone in the world?
- 2:51I would not have been so sad on account of my poverty, but you
- 2:55have given me a wife and children all mother.
- 2:57Give me the means to support them.
- 3:01It so happened that on that day. Day and on that very spot.
- 3:03The god, Shiva and his wife Durga or taking their morning.
- 3:06Walk, the goddess Durga upon seeing the brahmana.
- 3:09At a distance, said to her Divine husband, O, Lord of the
- 3:13kailash. Do you see that Brahman?
- 3:15He was always taking my name on his lips and offering the prayer
- 3:18that I should deliver him out of his troubles.
- 3:21My Lord. Can we do something for the poor
- 3:23Brahmin oppressed? As he is with the cares of a
- 3:26growing family? We should give him enough to
- 3:28make him comfortable as the poor man, his family never have
- 3:32enough. To eat.
- 3:32I propose that you give him a handy which will yield him an
- 3:35inexhaustible supply of mookie. The Lord of kailash, readily
- 3:40agreed to the proposal of his Divine consort and by his decree
- 3:44created on the spot, a handy, possessing the required quality,
- 3:48Darker than called the Brahmin to her and said, o Brahmin.
- 3:51I've often thought of your pitiable case, your repeated
- 3:55prayers, have it last move. My compassion here is a handy
- 3:58for you. When you turn it upside down and
- 4:01shake it, it will pour out a never-ending shower of the
- 4:03finest mud key, which will not end to you restore the handy to
- 4:06its proper position. Yourself, your wife and your
- 4:10children can eat as much mud key as you like and you can also
- 4:12sell as much as you like. The Brahman delighted Beyond
- 4:17measured obtaining so greater treasure.
- 4:19Made obeisance to the goddess in taking the handy.
- 4:21In his hand proceeded towards his house as fast as his legs
- 4:24could carry him. But he had not gone very far
- 4:28when he thought of testing the efficacy of the wonderful vessel
- 4:32accordingly. He turned the handy upside down
- 4:34and shook it, when lo and behold a quantity of the finest McGee
- 4:38had ever seen fell to the ground.
- 4:41He tied the sweet meet up in his sheet and walked on it was Now
- 4:45noon in the brahmanas hungry. But he cannot eat without
- 4:47washing and saying his prayers. Along the way, he saw an n and
- 4:51not far from it a tank where he thought to stop there.
- 4:54So that he might bathe say his prayers and then eat the much
- 4:57desired Mookie The Brahmin said at The Innkeeper shop but the
- 5:02handy jar near him smoke. Tobacco smeared his body with
- 5:04mustard oil and before proceeding debated in the
- 5:07adjacent tank, gave the handy in charge to The Innkeeper, begging
- 5:10him again and again to take special care of it.
- 5:14The Brahmin went to have his bath and make his devotions.
- 5:17The Innkeeper thought it was strange that he should be.
- 5:19So careful with the safety of this Earthen vessel, There must
- 5:22be something valuable in the handy thought.
- 5:25Otherwise, why would the Brahman takes so much thought about it?
- 5:29His curiosity being excited, he opened the handy and to his
- 5:32surprise found that it contained nothing.
- 5:35What could be the meaning of this?
- 5:36Thought The Innkeeper to himself, why should the Brahmin
- 5:39care so much for an empty handy? He took up the vessel began to
- 5:43examine it carefully. And when in the course of
- 5:45examination, he turned the handy upside down, a quantity of the
- 5:48finest. Mud key fell from it and went on
- 5:50falling without intermission. The Innkeeper called his wife
- 5:54and children to witness this unexpected stroke of Good
- 5:57Fortune, the showers of the sugar fried Patty were so
- 6:00copious that they filled all the vessels in jars of The
- 6:03Innkeeper. He resolved to liberate the
- 6:05precious handy and accordingly, put it in its place.
- 6:08Another handy of the same size and make The Brahmin finishing,
- 6:13his washing and prayers came to the shop in wet clothes while
- 6:16reciting the holy text of The Vedas.
- 6:19Putting on dry clothes. He wrote on a sheet of paper,
- 6:21the name of Durga 108 times in red ink after which he broke his
- 6:25fast on the mode. Key his hand, he had already
- 6:27given him thus refreshed and being about to resume his
- 6:30journey home words, he called for his handy, which The
- 6:32Innkeeper delivered to him. Adding there sir there is your
- 6:35Handi. It is just where you put it.
- 6:38No one has touched it. The Brahmin without suspecting
- 6:42anything. Took up the handy and proceeded
- 6:44on his journey. And as he walked on, he
- 6:46congratulated himself on a singular.
- 6:48Good Fortune, how agreeably he thought within himself will my
- 6:53poor wife, be surprised how greedily the children will
- 6:57devour the mud key of heaven Zone.
- 6:58Manufacturer, I shall soon become rich and lift up my head
- 7:02with the best of them. All the Pains of traveling were
- 7:05considerably alleviated by these joyful anticipations He reached
- 7:10his house in calling his wife and children.
- 7:12He said, look at what, I've brought this handy that you see,
- 7:16is the unending source of wealth and contentment.
- 7:19You will see a stream of the finest mud, chi flow from it.
- 7:21When I turn it upside down, The brahmins Good Wife hearing of
- 7:26McGee falling from the handy unceasingly thought that her
- 7:29husband must have gone mad and she confirmed her opinion when
- 7:32she found that nothing fell from the vessel though.
- 7:34It was turned upside down again and again overwhelmed with
- 7:39grief, the Brahma concluded that the Innkeeper must have played a
- 7:42trick on him. It must have stolen the handy
- 7:44Durga had given him and give him back a common one instead.
- 7:49Went back the next day to The Innkeeper and charged him with
- 7:52having changed his handy, The Innkeeper put on a fit of anger,
- 7:55expressed his surprise of the brahmins impudence in charging
- 7:58him with the theft and drove him away from his shop.
- 8:02The Ramen then thought to have an interview with the goddess
- 8:05Durga, who had given him the handy and accordingly went to
- 8:07the forest where he had met her. Shiva and Durga again favored
- 8:11the Brahmin with an interview Durga said so you have lost the
- 8:16handy I gave you. Here's another take it and make
- 8:19good use of it. The brahmana lady with joy made.
- 8:23Obeisance to the Divine couple took up the vessel and went on
- 8:25his way. He had not gone far when he
- 8:28turned it upside down and shook it.
- 8:30In order to see whether any Mudkip would fall from It,
- 8:33Horror of Horrors instead of sweetmeats a score of demons of
- 8:37gigantic size and grim-visaged jumped out of Handy and began to
- 8:41believe her the astonished Brahma with blows fisticuffs and
- 8:44kicks. He had the presence of mind to
- 8:47turn up the handy and cover it. When the demons forthwith
- 8:49disappeared, he concluded that this new handy had been given to
- 8:53him only for the punishment of The Innkeeper.
- 8:57He accordingly went to The Innkeeper and gave him the new
- 8:59handed to take care of and begged him to be very careful
- 9:02until he returned from his bath and prayers.
- 9:05The Innkeeper delighted with the second godsend called his wife
- 9:08and children and said, this is another handy brought here by
- 9:11the same. Brahman brought the handy of mud
- 9:13key this time. I hope it is not mood key, but
- 9:16son Dessa. Come be ready with baskets and
- 9:19vessels and I'll turn the hand over and shake it.
- 9:23This was no sooner done than scores of Fierce.
- 9:25Demon started jumping out. They caught hold of The
- 9:28Innkeeper, and his family beat them, mercilessly.
- 9:31They also began breaking everything in the shop and would
- 9:33have completely destroyed it. The victims had Not called for
- 9:36the Brahman who by this time had returned from his bath to show
- 9:38Mercy to them and to send away the terrible demons.
- 9:42The Brahmin accepted the innkeeper's request and
- 9:45dismissed the Demons by shutting up the vessel, his former handy
- 9:48was returned and with the two Handy's, he went off to his home
- 9:51Village. Upon reaching home, the Brahmin
- 9:54shut the door of his house. Turned them would be handy
- 9:57upside down and shook it, the result was an endless stream of
- 10:00the finest mud key that any confectioner in the country
- 10:03could produce the man, his wife and their children devoured, the
- 10:07sweet meat to their heart's content, then all the available
- 10:09Earthen pots, and pans of the house were filled with it and
- 10:12the Brahmin resolved, the next day to turn into a confectioner,
- 10:15to open a shop in his house to sell mood key.
- 10:20On the very day, the shop was opened the whole village came to
- 10:23the brahmins house to buy the wonderful mood key.
- 10:25They had never seen such mud key in their life.
- 10:27It was so sweet. So white, so large, so luscious,
- 10:31no confectioner in the village or in any town in the country at
- 10:34ever manufactured anything like it in a few days, the reputation
- 10:39of the brahmins mood key, spread beyond the bounds of the village
- 10:42and the people came from every corner of the land to buy it.
- 10:46Cartloads of the sweet meat were sold every day.
- 10:48And the Brahman in a very short time became very rich.
- 10:53He built a large brick house and live like a nobleman on the
- 10:56land. One time, however, his property
- 10:59was almost sent into wreck and ruin.
- 11:02One day, his children, shook the wrong Handy by mistake on a
- 11:05large number of demons drop down and caught hold of the
- 11:08brahmana's wife and children and Were Striking them mercilessly
- 11:11when luckily, the Brahmin came into the house and turned over
- 11:14the handy. In order to prevent a similar
- 11:17catastrophe in the future, the brahmins shut the demon handy up
- 11:20in a private room to which his children had no access but pure
- 11:25and interrupted Prosperity is not the fate of Mortals.
- 11:28And though the demon handy was put aside, what security was
- 11:31there that an accent might not befall the mood candy.
- 11:35One day while the brahmana's wife were out of the house, the
- 11:38children decided to shake the handy but as all of them wish to
- 11:41enjoy the pleasure of shaking it it was a general struggle to get
- 11:44it. And in this meal a the handy
- 11:46fell to the ground and broke. It is needless to say that the
- 11:50Brahmin upon reaching home heard of the disaster and became
- 11:53inexpressibly sad. The children were of course,
- 11:57while cudgeled but no flogging of children.
- 11:59Could replace the magical handy after a few days.
- 12:02He went again to the forest and offered many prayers for durga's
- 12:05favor at last. She even Durga again appeared to
- 12:08him and heard how the handy had been broken.
- 12:11Durga gave him another handy. A company with the following
- 12:14warning, Brahmin take care of this handy.
- 12:18If you break it or lose it, I'll not give you another the Brahmin
- 12:22bowed low and went away to his house at once.
- 12:24Without halting anywhere when he reached home, he shut the door
- 12:27of his house called his wife to him, turn the handy upside down
- 12:30and began to shake it. They were only expecting mud key
- 12:34to drop from it, but instead of mud key, a perennial stream of
- 12:37the beautiful, send Essa was issued from it and such son
- 12:41Dessa. No confectioner of Burr bizarre
- 12:44ever made it like that, it was more the food of God's than of
- 12:48men, the Brahmin forthwith set up a shop for Um, send
- 12:51essa/jesus Fame of which soon Drew crowds of customers from
- 12:55all parts of the country at all festivals at all marriage.
- 12:59Feast, had all funeral celebrations at all poojas, no
- 13:02one thought of any other scent desert but the brahmins every
- 13:06day, and every hour, many jars of gigantic size, filled with
- 13:09the delicious sweet meat, were sent to all parts of the
- 13:12country, the wealth of the Brahman excited, the Envy of the
- 13:16seminar of the village who having heard that, the send Essa
- 13:19was not manufactured. But rather Fell from a handy
- 13:22devised, a plan for getting possession of the miraculous
- 13:25vessel. At the celebration of his sons.
- 13:28Marriage held, a great feast, and hundreds of people were
- 13:31invited as Mountain loads of sand, desert would be required.
- 13:34For the purpose is Emmett, our proposed, the Brahman should
- 13:37bring the magical handy to the house, where the feast was to be
- 13:40held. At first, the Brahmin refused to
- 13:43take it there but as the jem'hadar insisted, on being
- 13:46carried to his house, he reluctantly agreed to take it
- 13:48there. After many, Himalayas of son
- 13:51Dessa had been shaken out. The jem'hadar took possession of
- 13:54the handy, the Brahmin was insulted and driven out of the
- 13:56house. The Brahmin without showing any
- 13:59anger quietly went to his house and taking the demon handy.
- 14:02In his hand, came back to the door of the zamindar's house, he
- 14:06turned the handy upside down and shook it out, popped hundreds of
- 14:10demons starting a vastly deep in enacted seen, which is
- 14:13impossible to describe the hundreds of guests that have
- 14:17been brought to the feast were caught hold of, by the unearthly
- 14:20visitants. And beaten the women were
- 14:22dragged by their hair from the zenana and dashed about amongst
- 14:25the man, while the big and Burly seminar was driven to, From room
- 14:28to room like a bale of cotton. If the demons have been allowed
- 14:32to do, their will for only a few minutes longer all of the men
- 14:35would have been killed and the Very house razed to the ground
- 14:38is a meander, fell prostrated the field of Brahman and beg for
- 14:41Mercy. Mercy was shown to him and the
- 14:44demons were removed after that. The Brahmin was never disturbed
- 14:48by the jem'hadar or by anyone else, and he lived a great, many
- 14:51years, and happiness and enjoyment.
- 14:54Thus my story endeth, The Nadia Thorn withereth Etc On the end.
- 15:26Well, I really like that version of the story.
- 15:29The Humble man being rewarded for his piety, only to have his
- 15:32riches stolen from him. Again, you can see the same sort
- 15:34of story and episode 109 from the Azores or an episode 145
- 15:38from the Philippines. I'm glad to see the brahmins
- 15:41family be rewarded for their Good Deeds.
- 15:44Still, the brown was like, oh please, please Durga help me
- 15:48out. I've been burdened by a family.
- 15:50You chose to have a family. They didn't just drop in on you,
- 15:53you chose them. Anyway, the podcast shout-out is
- 15:57too because language, because language formally talk, the talk
- 16:01is a podcast based mostly out of Australia with Daniel and Ben
- 16:04and wherever the globe-trotting had big is at the time.
- 16:08This is a podcast that not only explores language and how we use
- 16:10it but they also get into Linguistics without making it a
- 16:13great. Graduate.
- 16:13Level course, they have fun and games and also get serious from
- 16:16time to time. My favorite game is.
- 16:19Yeah, nah or not. Yeah a nod to the Australian
- 16:22phrase where Ben and had big have to parse out.
- 16:25Whether two words are related, it's a very lovely show and I've
- 16:28been a big fan for years and as this episode will come out in
- 16:31June. I should be a patron of the show
- 16:33for about a month or so at that point and if you can or want to
- 16:36you can too but at least give them a listen, a rating and
- 16:40review if you like them as much as I do.
- 16:43And The Listener. Shout-out is to Detroit,
- 16:45Michigan, home of the Red Wings, Pistons tigers and some football
- 16:49team, that has never been to the Super Bowl unless they are

- 16:55good college buddies, Calcasieu, Syracuse, LaRue, Chesterfield,
- 16:58and West Side Erin. I've had a ton of fun
- 17:01experiences in that grand old city.
- 17:03Now, I know Detroit gets a bad rep but really it is a lovely

- 17:09nothing but supportive, ever since I rolled out their way
- 17:11with a young, Jerome a day. For classes at AMU.
- 17:15I also had a fun time teaching at a lovely school called
- 17:17karstens, which sadly and happily has been torn down.
- 17:21It was really old and not working.
- 17:23Well, a lot of the urinals didn't work was kind of scary.
- 17:26So to all my listeners in the 313 those living off to 15.
- 17:29See those stuck in traffic on the lodge and those who can say
- 17:32Dequindre and lesser and Gratiot and all the way out to the
