- 0:32left a link right here in the show notes.
- 0:35And that brings us to today's quote from Eleanor Roosevelt,
- 0:39longest serving First Lady of the United States United Nations
- 0:44delegate and the driving force behind the Universal Declaration
- 0:48of Human Rights. She once said it takes as much
- 0:53energy to wish as it does to plan 10 words, and they expose
- 1:00something most of us do every single day without realizing it.
- 1:04Wishing feels passive, like it costs nothing.
- 1:09We wish things were different. We wish we'd started sooner.
- 1:14We wish the right opportunity would come along.
- 1:17It feels harmless, like idle daydreaming that happens in the
- 1:21background while life carries on.
- 1:24But Roosevelt is pointing out something far more
- 1:27uncomfortable. Wishing is not free.
- 1:32It costs exactly the same mental and emotional energy as
- 1:35planning. It just produces nothing in
- 1:38return. Think about that.
- 1:42Every hour you spend wishing you were in better shape cost the
- 1:45same energy as planning the first workout.
- 1:49Every hour spent wishing your business idea would somehow come
- 1:53together cost the same as mapping out the first 3 steps.
- 1:58Wishing often involves dwelling on unfulfilled desires and
- 2:02imagining a better future without making any progress
- 2:06towards it, which leads to frustration and disappointment.
- 2:11You're spending the currency either way, the question is
- 2:14whether you're getting anything back.
- 2:17Roosevelt herself was a woman who never wished.
- 2:20When she was able to act, she travelled the country surveying
- 2:24conditions, wrote thousands of articles, delivered countless
- 2:27speeches and worked tirelessly to draft the Universal
- 2:30Declaration of Human Rights. She didn't have more energy than
- 2:35everyone else. She simply refused to spend it
- 2:38on wishing. Planning doesn't have to be
- 2:41complicated. It just means taking the same
- 2:44energy you'd pour into a wish and directing it toward a
- 2:48decision. A step, a date on the calendar.
- 2:52Same energy, completely different result.
- 2:56So here's the question. What are you currently wishing
- 3:00for that you could be planning for instead?
- 3:03Because the energy is already there?
- 3:06Because you're already spending it.
- 3:08The only question is whether you're spending it on a wish
- 3:11that goes nowhere or a plan that actually moves you forward.
- 3:16Same energy, your choice what to do with it.
- 3:20That's it for today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 3:24for now, but I'm back tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 3:33with another daily quote.
