SPEAKER_01: The Family Proclamation Words from God.

SPEAKER_01: One of the things that I love about the church is how we are taught to pray to know truth.

SPEAKER_01: I remember when I was my first year of seminary, I had an amazing teacher.

SPEAKER_01: My mom was my teacher.

SPEAKER_01: and that year we were talking about the doctrine covenants and i remember

SPEAKER_01: that first day walking in she had set up this room as if it was like

SPEAKER_01: the sacred grove so she had brought in all of like the fake plants and things

SPEAKER_01: and trees and things that were around the building and

SPEAKER_01: and we just walked in and it was just a really peaceful setting and she talked

SPEAKER_01: about how she wanted to have this theme for this year to be I have learned

SPEAKER_01: for myself and she talked about Joseph Smith's experience about wanting to know

SPEAKER_01: which church was the true church and how he studied and he prayed and he went into

SPEAKER_01: the grove of trees and he knelt down and he prayed to know the truth and

SPEAKER_01: then afterwards he goes

SPEAKER_01: to his mom and says i have learned for myself and that is one thing that i just love

SPEAKER_01: about this church is that like one of the most often an oft quoted scripture in

SPEAKER_01: the book of mormon is in moroni 10 where it talks about praying to know

SPEAKER_01: the truthfulness of the things that are written within that book and it's something

SPEAKER_01: that as missionaries we've encouraged it's something the whole doctrine covenants

SPEAKER_01: restoration of the church happened because of questions that Joseph Smith

SPEAKER_01: and others had and he went and he would go and he would pray and receive

SPEAKER_01: the revelation and that is something that we are encouraged to do for ourselves

SPEAKER_01: to pray to know the truthfulness of the gospel to pray to know the truthfulness of

SPEAKER_01: the Book of Mormon to pray to know that we have a living prophet

SPEAKER_01: present on this earth today to pray to know that the savior is our savior and

SPEAKER_01: to pray to know the truthfulness of the other doctrines that we have including

SPEAKER_01: the family a proclamation to the world and so

SPEAKER_01: this talk that i had was on the family proclamation to the world and it was

SPEAKER_01: a beautiful discussion that we had because what kept coming to my mind

SPEAKER_01: as i was preparing this lesson was the phrase i belong and as i was sitting there

SPEAKER_01: in relief society we were singing a song called welcome home that's one of

SPEAKER_01: the newer songs within the church and and it talks about how we all gather together

SPEAKER_01: and we are welcome home and um and then it talks about the temple and how

SPEAKER_01: that is us being welcomed home and then the third verse is about going and living

SPEAKER_01: with our savior and going to heaven and being welcomed home and

SPEAKER_01: as i was sitting there listening to the words of the song

SPEAKER_01: that we were singing together as sisters i belong i belong was what kept coming

SPEAKER_01: to my mind and i just felt this immense love for the sisters around me and for love

SPEAKER_01: that the savior had for me as well and i realized that that is what this talk

SPEAKER_01: from elder rasmid was all about was that we belong and i got out there

SPEAKER_01: and i wrote i belong up there and we talked

SPEAKER_01: about elder rasmid's talk there's one thing um that he says he says some

SPEAKER_01: of you may reflect on the proclamation and say

SPEAKER_01: this isn't working for me it seems insensitive my family doesn't look like

SPEAKER_01: that i don't fit for those with concerns know that you are a child

SPEAKER_01: of heavenly parents part of your heavenly father's family no one knows you better

SPEAKER_01: or cares more deeply about you than he does turn to him pour out your heart

SPEAKER_01: to him trust him and his promises you have family in your savior jesus christ

SPEAKER_01: who loves you and i love that quote because there are times in our lives

SPEAKER_01: where we don't feel like we belong and where we don't fit into the ideal that

SPEAKER_01: the family proclamation portrays and yet here the here

SPEAKER_01: an apostle of

SPEAKER_01: the lord is saying you belong you are a child of heavenly father you are a part

SPEAKER_01: of his family and you belong so

SPEAKER_01: when we start to feel like we don't fit in to this ideal that

SPEAKER_01: the family proclamation portrays there's um there can be that that shame that comes

SPEAKER_01: in and just stop for a moment and if you ever feel like that you are falling short

SPEAKER_01: that you don't measure up there have been times in my life

SPEAKER_01: where i felt like i did not belong
5:53
SPEAKER_01: where i struggled to feel connected with those around me at church as well and yet

SPEAKER_01: the lord was still there with me and he knew what it was that i was going

SPEAKER_01: through he knew that i could overcome it towards the beginning

SPEAKER_01: of my marriage my husband and i struggled with infertility

SPEAKER_01: and i remember how hard mother's day was because we would be there
6:15
SPEAKER_01: and they would be talking about mothers and i was not a mom and i remember the pain
6:21
SPEAKER_01: of each month

SPEAKER_01: when i would realize that i still wasn't pregnant and um and also just
6:28
SPEAKER_01: the extreme grief that i had when i did get pregnant and i had a miscarriage

SPEAKER_01: and i lost that baby and there was such pain there and we felt so far away from

SPEAKER_01: the ideal that we think of when we think of a family within the church and

SPEAKER_01: the truth is that we all have different families right so you may be struggling

SPEAKER_01: with infertility like i was so at the beginning of my marriage

SPEAKER_01: you may not be married at this time maybe you're in a marriage
6:58
SPEAKER_01: that is really difficult or you have kids who are falling away

SPEAKER_01: and taking their own paths and things are just not looking the way

SPEAKER_01: that you had planned or maybe you are in what most people would call
7:13
SPEAKER_01: the ideal family and yet you're struggling because it's not easy whatever

SPEAKER_01: the circumstance is that you may be in

SPEAKER_01: this proclamation still applies to you because you are part

SPEAKER_01: of heavenly father's family and so what i feel like is important when we talk

SPEAKER_01: when we read the family proclamation when we go in there and

SPEAKER_01: and we think we read it is that it is the ideal it is the direction

SPEAKER_01: that we are going but it's not something that we take and we think i'm so far behind

SPEAKER_01: it is the direction that we are going heavenly father doesn't expect us

SPEAKER_01: to have everything perfectly right when he gives us something he gives us truth

SPEAKER_01: and allows us to be able to work on it

SPEAKER_01: that's something that we learn about with the garden of eden

SPEAKER_01: that heavenly father gave them space after the fall to be able to repent to be able

SPEAKER_01: to learn and to be able to grow and to become able to become who he saw in them and

SPEAKER_01: the same is true with us

SPEAKER_01: He has provided a

SPEAKER_01: where it feels so hard to go on he can help us to be able to see that we are

SPEAKER_01: of worth that we are divine even in those times when we feel like we aren't

SPEAKER_01: where we are meant to be and that shame starts to come in the lord can remind us

SPEAKER_01: that that there is always hope

SPEAKER_01: that it is not the end and that we are of great worth exactly as we are so

SPEAKER_01: the ideal is not the measuring stick it is the goal it is the direction

SPEAKER_01: that we are going so as we read

SPEAKER_01: the family proclamation or as we gain guidance and direction from the scriptures or

SPEAKER_01: from the prophet and the apostles and other leaders of the church let us look

SPEAKER_01: at what they have to say and think okay how can i apply this to my life and do so in

SPEAKER_01: a loving way because those people love us and they want us

SPEAKER_01: to be able to overcome the struggles that we're going through they want us

SPEAKER_01: to be able to see that there is something divine within us we are children of god

SPEAKER_01: and i think often they talk about that about how we have a loving heavenly father

SPEAKER_01: and how we are his children and this talk

SPEAKER_01: from elder rasband is no different what i love about what he says about

SPEAKER_01: the proclamation is he says quote the proclamation states

SPEAKER_01: the family is ordained of god i love the clarity of that statement

SPEAKER_01: the proclamation is a call for us to live in mortality ever mindful of the divinity

SPEAKER_01: within us and the eternal future that lies before us end quote okay i love that

SPEAKER_01: because when

SPEAKER_01: When he reads the sentence,

SPEAKER_01: the family is ordained of God,

SPEAKER_01: what he sees is that it is a call for us to remember who we are and

SPEAKER_01: who we are becoming as children of God.

SPEAKER_01: He then goes on to quote President Nelson, who says,

SPEAKER_01: you are literally spirit children of god make no mistake about it your potential is divine

SPEAKER_01: with your diligent seeking god will give you glimpses of who you may become end quote so one

SPEAKER_01: thing that i want to encourage you all to do is to read through the family proclamation again

SPEAKER_01: with that in mind that it is a loving heavenly father trying to tell you who you are

SPEAKER_01: and give you guidance and direction for helping you to be able to teach yourself

SPEAKER_01: that teach your families that and grow closer together as

SPEAKER_01: a family other resident talks about how the proclamation is divine

SPEAKER_01: in origin it is doctrine that we have received

SPEAKER_01: from the prophet and the apostles and he says in the first paragraph

SPEAKER_01: of his talk he says by divine design this proclamation

SPEAKER_01: with its revelatory words was created to maintain and strengthen the family as

SPEAKER_01: a fundamental unit of society this is something that

SPEAKER_01: as we apply we can strengthen those around us we can strengthen each other

SPEAKER_01: within our families and within our wards and within our society as we seek to follow

SPEAKER_01: the council within the words there and as i said if there is anything

SPEAKER_01: that you struggle with in relation to the family proclamation what do we do we pray

SPEAKER_01: and we turn to the lord and we ask him for guidance and for help in being able

SPEAKER_01: to apply those things and in being able to see truth and i am reading a lot

SPEAKER_01: of quotes from elder aspen's talk here's another one

SPEAKER_01: quote all of the lord's apostles love you dearly we pray for you and seek

SPEAKER_01: the lord's guidance for you stay with us you live in challenging times when

SPEAKER_01: the adversary seeks to make you his do not be drawn off and

SPEAKER_01: if you are come back our arms reach out to you as with
12:35
SPEAKER_01: Will those of others who love you.

SPEAKER_01: End quote.

SPEAKER_01: Having the apostles and other leaders of the church, that is proof that God loves us.

SPEAKER_01: He has given us a way to not have to figure it out on our own.

SPEAKER_01: And so we prayerfully turn to the Lord in recognizing that truth,

SPEAKER_01: and we can receive His words and answers that

SPEAKER_01: the words of the scriptures and through the words

SPEAKER_01: of the lord's apostles that are here on this earth

SPEAKER_01: give us guidance

SPEAKER_01: and direction for our day

SPEAKER_01: one of the things in my mission

SPEAKER_01: i remember talking about is how

SPEAKER_01: we don't need to necessarily

SPEAKER_01: build a boat like noah did in his day um that's not what the prophet teaches us

SPEAKER_01: to do in this day because he is receiving guidance and revelation for us in our day

SPEAKER_01: and that's the beautiful thing about having prophets is

SPEAKER_01: that they do receive guidance and direction specific to what we need to know um

SPEAKER_01: in our day and age and um in amos 3 7 it says the lord god will reveal nothing

SPEAKER_01: but he revealeth

SPEAKER_01: his secrets to his servants the prophets is something that he continues

SPEAKER_01: to do today he continues to receive that guidance to give that guidance

SPEAKER_01: and direction through a living prophet and that is one of the ways

SPEAKER_01: that he shows his love for us and so here we have this proclamation that reminds us

SPEAKER_01: of that allows us to know the importance of family how we do belong how we have

SPEAKER_01: an eternal family

SPEAKER_01: it helps us know more about our identity it gives us clarity more clarity about

SPEAKER_01: who we are and it also gives us guidance and direction about how to be able

SPEAKER_01: to create a stronger family and a stronger community in another quote

SPEAKER_01: from Elder Rasband it says quote one of my favorite statements in

SPEAKER_01: the proclamation is this happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved

SPEAKER_01: when founded upon the teachings of Jesus Christ who does not want to be happy

SPEAKER_01: And what are the teachings of Jesus Christ?

SPEAKER_01: Again in the proclamation, faith, prayer,

SPEAKER_01: repentance,

SPEAKER_01: forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities.

SPEAKER_01: Whose life will not be better by applying these key principles?

SPEAKER_01: And then he goes on to say,

SPEAKER_01: none of us are going to do perfectly,

SPEAKER_01: but we can follow President Hinckley's wise words,

SPEAKER_01: do the very best you can, end quote.

SPEAKER_01: And some days,

SPEAKER_01: some days i feel like that best is i'm checking all the boxes i'm doing all

SPEAKER_01: the things right i'm getting those things done and some days my best is like i need

SPEAKER_01: a nap and it's putting forth a lot less and i'm putting in as much effort as i can

SPEAKER_01: and yet i am not hitting those boxes and yet that is still my best sometimes

SPEAKER_00: though we start beating ourselves up because we start focusing in

SPEAKER_01: on that gap that we have where um on our our best days right

SPEAKER_01: where we are heading off those boxes and when really our best

SPEAKER_01: that day may seem like it falls short from those best days but the truth is

SPEAKER_01: that we are doing our best even on those days so when those thoughts

SPEAKER_01: of i don't fit i don't belong start to come in

SPEAKER_01: i'm falling short i don't feel like i'm doing all that i can do even

SPEAKER_01: though i am doing all that i can do remember that christ makes up

SPEAKER_01: that difference this plan that our heavenly father has for us is a perfect plan

SPEAKER_01: because he knows that

SPEAKER_01: there are going to be weaknesses of ours and he knows like

SPEAKER_01: in ether 12 27 he says i give unto men weakness that they may be humble and yet

SPEAKER_01: as we have faith in him he makes our weaknesses become strong and so hang in there

SPEAKER_01: and trust that in the knowledge that you are a child of god

SPEAKER_01: he loves you he sees you he knows what you're going through he has provided a way

SPEAKER_01: for you to overcome and while it may not be on the time schedule that you want it

SPEAKER_01: to happen you will overcome as you put your faith and trust in the lord instead

SPEAKER_01: the doctrine of the family

SPEAKER_01: and seeing i don't fit i don't fit ask yourself instead how can i apply and focus

SPEAKER_01: on just one thing that you can do to be able to apply the knowledge of the gospel

SPEAKER_01: into your life and it's those small consistent things that we do um eat that we do

SPEAKER_01: makes great things happen right in alma chapter chapter 37 it says by small

SPEAKER_01: and simple things are great things brought to pass you can overcome as you continue

SPEAKER_01: to put one step

SPEAKER_01: ahead of another trusting in the lord and sometimes so let's go through those things

SPEAKER_01: that we are being taught again faith prayer repentance forgiveness respect love

SPEAKER_01: compassion work and wholesome recreational activities choose one of those things

SPEAKER_01: and pray about how you can apply it into your life and into your family and

SPEAKER_01: then take action one step at a time

SPEAKER_00: And I want to just consider for a moment what would happen

SPEAKER_01: if we all truly understood the divine roles that we have in our lives

SPEAKER_01: and how we are all children of God.

SPEAKER_01: how would that change what we believe about ourselves how would

SPEAKER_01: that change what we believe about our families about those around us who we interact

SPEAKER_01: with on a day-to-day basis on how we view any person in this world how would

SPEAKER_01: that change the way you view them to know and understand and recognize that they are

SPEAKER_01: a part of heavenly father's family

SPEAKER_01: that they are also a child of god that you are a child of god as we all embrace

SPEAKER_01: that there is a greater sense of community not just within our families not just

SPEAKER_01: within the church but within the world because we recognize and understand

SPEAKER_01: the great love that our heavenly father has for each of us and we begin to live from

SPEAKER_01: a place of love and not a place of comparison not a place from
19:22
SPEAKER_01: from feeling less than but a place of knowing and understanding that we are all

SPEAKER_01: of worth that we are all loved as we are and that we all have our strengths

SPEAKER_01: and our weaknesses and our our differences that can actually help us to build

SPEAKER_01: a stronger community

SPEAKER_01: as we learn to recognize and understand how each of us can bring something to

SPEAKER_01: the table and be able to create a stronger connection with each other so

SPEAKER_00: that we can make a greater impact on this world remember that you are

SPEAKER_01: of worth you are a child of god he loves you i know that

SPEAKER_01: the family proclamation is revelation that it helps us to be able

SPEAKER_01: to better understand who we are it's about identity it's about where we came from

SPEAKER_01: who we are where we're going it's about strengthening those around us and

SPEAKER_01: as we apply the teachings and principles within the family proclamation we come

SPEAKER_01: to have a greater love and understanding of our savior of our of who we are and of

SPEAKER_01: who others are as well and so let us look at this proclamation with love and with

SPEAKER_01: the understanding that we can apply it step by step line upon line precept

SPEAKER_01: upon precept as the lord
