- 0:04Speaker 1: They were going to be taking a look at Memories
- 0:20Speaker 1: of Murder, a movie that came out in two thousand
- 0:23Speaker 1: and three that's based on the infamous Hai Song serial murders,
- 0:26Speaker 1: south Korea's first widely recognized serial murder case. The crimes
- 0:30Speaker 1: occurred between nineteen eighty six and nineteen ninety one in
- 0:34Speaker 1: the rural city of Hawaisan. When Bong Jung ho made
- 0:37Speaker 1: the film, the case was still unsolved and would go
- 0:40Speaker 1: unsolved until twenty nineteen. This investigation became one of the
- 0:44Speaker 1: largest in South Korean history. More than two million police
- 0:47Speaker 1: work days were spent on the case. Approximately twenty one
- 0:51Speaker 1: thousand suspects were interviewed and investigated. Around one hundred and
- 0:55Speaker 1: eighty thousand fingerprints were examined. Hundreds of DNA samples were
- 0:59Speaker 1: collected as forensic science advanced that would be very important
- 1:03Speaker 1: to this case later on, as it is to many
- 1:06Speaker 1: other cases. Despite this enormous effort, Poleete reportedly arrested and
- 1:10Speaker 1: interrogated the wrong people. Torture enforced confessions depicted in the
- 1:15Speaker 1: film were unfortunately common investigation practices in South Korea during
- 1:19Speaker 1: the nineteen eighties military dictatorship. One of the most tragic
- 1:23Speaker 1: aspects of the case involved Unsung Yal. Police coerced him
- 1:27Speaker 1: into confessing to one of the murders despite physical evidence
- 1:31Speaker 1: suggesting he could not have committed it. He spent about
- 1:34Speaker 1: twenty years in prison before DNA evidence proved he was
- 1:37Speaker 1: innocent and his conviction was ultimately overturned. During the review,
- 1:41Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about what the movie gets right
- 1:44Speaker 1: as far as what was actually going on in the case,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and kind of comparing contrast those things to the real
- 1:51Speaker 1: life events. If you want to learn more about the case,
- 1:53Speaker 1: check out the show Korean True Crime. That's where I
- 1:57Speaker 1: got most of my information about the actual events, and
- 2:00Speaker 1: I'm going to try to remember to link that in
- 2:02Speaker 1: the description below, So check that out. Really great podcast.
- 2:06Speaker 1: You might recognize the director from this movie, Bong jing Ho,
- 2:10Speaker 1: as the director of a Parasite that was a big hit.
- 2:13Speaker 1: One of the things about this movie that's gonna get
- 2:15Speaker 1: you right away is the incredible scenery. So right away
- 2:18Speaker 1: the movie starts out, it's incredibly scenic. We're out in
- 2:21Speaker 1: this little field. Detective Park is investigating a rape murder,
- 2:25Speaker 1: so he just goes out there. He checks in this
- 2:28Speaker 1: little ditch, and you just see this like a woman's
- 2:30Speaker 1: feet sticking out of underneath this like concrete ditch cover.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So he's shining his light in there and checking out
- 2:37Speaker 1: her dead body and stuff like that. I didn't know
- 2:39Speaker 1: anything about the actual case going into this, so right
- 2:42Speaker 1: away I'm taking Detective Park like incredibly serious. I'm like,
- 2:46Speaker 1: this guy's probably like the badass main detective that knows
- 2:49Speaker 1: what's going on, and he's gonna fucking catch this guy
- 2:51Speaker 1: and stuff. You know. But as you pretty early on
- 2:54Speaker 1: in the movie, it shows that these these cops and
- 2:58Speaker 1: their investigations are pretty fucking shitty. Like it just seems
- 3:02Speaker 1: like everyone's touching stuff. Everyone's like walking all over the place.
- 3:06Speaker 1: They don't like, there's kids surrounding the crime scene and
- 3:08Speaker 1: stuff like that that they can't really control. They're like
- 3:11Speaker 1: trying to shoot them off, and the kids just aren't
- 3:13Speaker 1: listening and shit like that, and it just seems like
- 3:15Speaker 1: a little chaotic. And this is really made apparent because
- 3:19Speaker 1: Park does find a footprint nearby the scene and he's like,
- 3:22Speaker 1: oh shit, you know, everybody, you know, stay away from
- 3:25Speaker 1: the footprint. We need to mark this thing off and
- 3:28Speaker 1: you know, get some pictures of it or something, and
- 3:31Speaker 1: before they can do anything with a tractor just drives
- 3:34Speaker 1: through the crime scene and runs over the footprint, and
- 3:36Speaker 1: he's like, fuck, there goes. We blew it again. So
- 3:39Speaker 1: basically the whole investigation right away seems like a big
- 3:43Speaker 1: shit show. So they're back at the police station gathering
- 3:45Speaker 1: their suspects. Park believes that if he just stares at
- 3:48Speaker 1: the pictures of the suspects long enough, that he'll be
- 3:51Speaker 1: able to tell who the killer is. He has this
- 3:53Speaker 1: idea that he has the ability to tell whether or
- 3:57Speaker 1: not someone's lying, I guess, or like he can see
- 4:01Speaker 1: into their true character if he looks into their eyes
- 4:04Speaker 1: hard enough. I don't know. It seems really silly, but
- 4:08Speaker 1: the actor does such a great job with it that
- 4:10Speaker 1: you kind of believe. Like at first I believed him.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I was like, oh damn, Maybe that's like his reputation
- 4:16Speaker 1: or something. Maybe, I mean, although it doesn't seem realistic
- 4:18Speaker 1: at all, maybe it's just something that he's known for.
- 4:21Speaker 1: But I think it's something more that he's known for
- 4:24Speaker 1: within himself, Like he believes this about himself. I don't
- 4:27Speaker 1: know if anyone else really buys this, or because the
- 4:30Speaker 1: chief comes up to him and starts talking to him
- 4:31Speaker 1: about like what he's doing, and he's like, he explains,
- 4:34Speaker 1: he explains about his golden stare that he has, and
- 4:37Speaker 1: the Chief's like, okay, those two guys over there, one
- 4:40Speaker 1: of them's a rapist, the other one is the victim's brother,
- 4:43Speaker 1: which one's the rapist, And you just kind of see
- 4:45Speaker 1: him staring over there for a long time, like I
- 4:47Speaker 1: don't think that he ever. You don't see his answer,
- 4:49Speaker 1: but it just makes you kind of realize that, like this,
- 4:52Speaker 1: this is kind of bullshit, like he doesn't really have
- 4:55Speaker 1: this ability. And right after this, we're introduced to Park's
- 4:58Speaker 1: wife or girl friend at the time. Maybe they're just banging.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I didn't know who she was, so I was kind
- 5:04Speaker 1: of like, I don't know what's going on here. Maybe
- 5:06Speaker 1: she's a hooker or something. They don't really like introduce
- 5:09Speaker 1: anybody in that sort of way, so just like, well,
- 5:12Speaker 1: he's fucking some lady. She starts doing like some healing
- 5:15Speaker 1: stuff on him. She's sort of like a nurse. I
- 5:18Speaker 1: think it almost seems like she provides healthcare services, but
- 5:22Speaker 1: like door to door or something like that. And while
- 5:24Speaker 1: while they're kind of going through all this, she tells
- 5:27Speaker 1: him that she heard that this mentally disabled kid was
- 5:29Speaker 1: seen following the rape murder victim around the night that
- 5:33Speaker 1: she was murdered, So she's like, maybe you should go
- 5:35Speaker 1: look at him. Maybe she'd go checking to him. He's
- 5:37Speaker 1: always like sneaking around her and stuff like that and
- 5:40Speaker 1: talking about how pretty she is or something. So right away,
- 5:42Speaker 1: this just cuts to Park interrogating this guy. I don't
- 5:46Speaker 1: know if this is like a grown man or a guy,
- 5:48Speaker 1: because I swear she kept calling him a kid, But
- 5:51Speaker 1: he looks like he's like thirty five years old, just
- 5:53Speaker 1: with like some he kind of looks like the Grimlin
- 5:56Speaker 1: from Grimlin's two that also has a like a brain
- 6:00Speaker 1: injury or something or a mental disorder. You know, it's
- 6:03Speaker 1: Grimlin I'm talking about from Grimlins too. But while while
- 6:06Speaker 1: Park's kind of interrogating this guy asking him questions, his
- 6:09Speaker 1: partner runs in and just does like a fucking lu
- 6:12Speaker 1: kang flying kick to this guy's head and knocks him
- 6:15Speaker 1: out of the chair. And I didn't know what was
- 6:17Speaker 1: going on here early on, like I said, without knowing
- 6:21Speaker 1: anything about the case, I was thinking that like a
- 6:23Speaker 1: lot of this stuff seemed kind of silly or like
- 6:25Speaker 1: over the top, this whole interrogation process is way more
- 6:29Speaker 1: extreme than the movie even what's on because basically right
- 6:32Speaker 1: away you see that they're coaching him and torturing him
- 6:37Speaker 1: to make him admit to the murder, Like they just
- 6:40Speaker 1: want to get a confession out of this guy, and
- 6:42Speaker 1: they don't really give a fuck if he's the killer
- 6:44Speaker 1: or not. They just want to get this shit over with.
- 6:46Speaker 1: So they're like they've got him stripped down to us undies,
- 6:49Speaker 1: he's sleep deprived, they're not giving him any food, and
- 6:52Speaker 1: they're just whooping his ass. And they don't show a
- 6:54Speaker 1: lot of that in the movie. I mean, you do
- 6:56Speaker 1: see them like doing torturing and stuff like that, But
- 6:59Speaker 1: when you get to the true case, the true events
- 7:02Speaker 1: of what actually happened, it was way worse than what
- 7:05Speaker 1: they show on the movie. Like they when I was
- 7:07Speaker 1: listening to that podcast and they were explaining how bad
- 7:10Speaker 1: some of this torture was. They described this like specific
- 7:14Speaker 1: guy who was known for torturing people in South Korea,
- 7:17Speaker 1: who just love to torture people, like he loved the
- 7:19Speaker 1: waterboard people. He loved to psychologically and physically torture them.
- 7:24Speaker 1: One thing that stuck with me that they mentioned was
- 7:27Speaker 1: that he would with his bare hands. Apparently this guy
- 7:30Speaker 1: was really strong. He would grab their knee caps and
- 7:34Speaker 1: like break them off or like separate them from their
- 7:37Speaker 1: knee you know what I mean. So, like just imagine
- 7:40Speaker 1: your knee cap and just grabbing it until it fucking
- 7:43Speaker 1: I guess dislocates. I don't know how that's even how's
- 7:46Speaker 1: that even possible? I mean, I guess it is, but
- 7:48Speaker 1: it just it just sounds so painful. So when I
- 7:51Speaker 1: was watching the movie, it was hard for me to understand,
- 7:53Speaker 1: like why would these people be coerced into confessing to
- 7:56Speaker 1: these like horrible crimes so easily. But after listening to
- 8:00Speaker 1: what was actually going on and how badly and severely
- 8:03Speaker 1: they were tortured, I was like, yeah, that makes sense.
- 8:05Speaker 1: They said that there were even instances where people committed
- 8:08Speaker 1: suicide after being tortured by this guy because they were tortured.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So so, after this first interrogation scene, we cut over
- 8:15Speaker 1: to a new character that's walking down the road during
- 8:17Speaker 1: the middle of the day, and this is a detective
- 8:20Speaker 1: from Soul. This is another real thing that happened in
- 8:22Speaker 1: the case. They brought in a detective from Soeul to
- 8:25Speaker 1: help investigate and this guy right away we don't know
- 8:29Speaker 1: who he is, but he runs up to this lady
- 8:31Speaker 1: and he's like asking her for directions. Park drives by
- 8:34Speaker 1: and sees this, so detective part just runs out of
- 8:37Speaker 1: the car and just sprints over to this fucking guy
- 8:40Speaker 1: and like jumps on his head. He like jump, he
- 8:42Speaker 1: like drop kicks his ass into the side of the road,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and this guy's just kind of like what the fuck
- 8:46Speaker 1: and the lady run, she gets she escapes and runs off,
- 8:49Speaker 1: and Park is just like wailing on this guy, just
- 8:51Speaker 1: whooping his ass. And then he finds out that it's
- 8:54Speaker 1: actually a detective that's going to be helping with the case,
- 8:57Speaker 1: and he's kind of like, my bad, dude, sorry about that.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And they have a pretty fun conversation in the car
- 9:02Speaker 1: where the detective from Seoul I think his name Sue,
- 9:05Speaker 1: is like is like, how is a detective so bad
- 9:07Speaker 1: at identifying a criminal? Or something like that, and it
- 9:10Speaker 1: is kind of like another thing that pokes at the
- 9:13Speaker 1: idea that Park can just look at people and know
- 9:15Speaker 1: if they're the raper or not or the killer. Park
- 9:18Speaker 1: does hit back with how is a detective so bad
- 9:21Speaker 1: at fighting? Basically because the guy was just getting this
- 9:23Speaker 1: ass pummeled, and it's like, well, you did drop kick
- 9:26Speaker 1: him in the head as you're opening attack. That's hilarious.
- 9:29Speaker 1: That's I feel like that happened several times in this
- 9:31Speaker 1: movie too, where like the opening attack or like during
- 9:34Speaker 1: the interrogations, people just get like flying kicked in the head,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and it was like, is that like a common move
- 9:40Speaker 1: in South Korea at the time? The number one offensive
- 9:43Speaker 1: I don't know, offensive attack is just a flying jump
- 9:46Speaker 1: kick to the dome. Maybe I don't I'm not, Honestly,
- 9:49Speaker 1: there's a lot of things I learned from this whole
- 9:51Speaker 1: story about South Korea that I didn't know. It sound
- 9:54Speaker 1: like a pretty crazy place during the nineteen eighties. And
- 9:57Speaker 1: shortly after this we see so the the new detective
- 10:00Speaker 1: Sue Park and his partner are the one that's always
- 10:03Speaker 1: beating the fuck out of everybody. They just like drag
- 10:06Speaker 1: the special Knees guy out to the woods with a
- 10:09Speaker 1: tape recorder and they just start digging a grave and
- 10:11Speaker 1: they're like, you better confess, bitch, or we're gonna throw
- 10:14Speaker 1: you in this grave and bury your ass alive. We're
- 10:16Speaker 1: gonna kill you, and stuff like that, and so they
- 10:19Speaker 1: record him confessing to the murder, and you can tell
- 10:22Speaker 1: right away this like catches Sue's attention where he's like
- 10:25Speaker 1: what He's like, I think he doesn't realize exactly what's
- 10:27Speaker 1: going on For a second, He's like, shit, did they
- 10:29Speaker 1: already catch the guy? Like he's admitting to it right now,
- 10:33Speaker 1: But soon enough, I think he's kind of like, oh,
- 10:35Speaker 1: this is bullshit. And when watching the movie, I couldn't
- 10:38Speaker 1: tell right away. I was like, I assumed it probably wasn't.
- 10:41Speaker 1: This guy just seemed too easy and like the movie
- 10:44Speaker 1: would be over in twenty minutes. But at the same time,
- 10:46Speaker 1: it's like, this is one of the moments where, not
- 10:48Speaker 1: knowing how bad the torture was, I was like, damn,
- 10:51Speaker 1: they just like kick this guy out of a chair
- 10:52Speaker 1: in his underwear, and I mean, I guess they are
- 10:54Speaker 1: threatening to kill him, but you think at this point
- 10:58Speaker 1: he would still be like, I'm not gonna to this crime,
- 11:01Speaker 1: Like I think you guys are going to have to
- 11:02Speaker 1: get a little bit more serious about killing me or
- 11:04Speaker 1: whatever before I go to prison for the rest of
- 11:07Speaker 1: my life. But they do arrest the guy anyway, and
- 11:10Speaker 1: they do a reenactment for the press that's another thing
- 11:12Speaker 1: where the local press was really like involved in this case,
- 11:17Speaker 1: at least in the movie. That was something that I
- 11:20Speaker 1: think was maybe a little less true in real life.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Like I'm sure they were reporting on this and covering
- 11:26Speaker 1: what the police were doing and stuff like that. I
- 11:28Speaker 1: don't know if there was this much pressure from the press,
- 11:31Speaker 1: That's something I'd have to go back and look into.
- 11:33Speaker 1: In the movie, it almost feels like this could possibly
- 11:36Speaker 1: be the reason why they're coming up with these false
- 11:38Speaker 1: confessions and why they're putting so much pressure on finding
- 11:41Speaker 1: this guy. I don't really remember if that was the
- 11:44Speaker 1: case in real life or not. I have to double
- 11:46Speaker 1: check that one. And while Park and his partner are
- 11:49Speaker 1: getting this whole like press release thing ready too, the
- 11:52Speaker 1: detective from Soul he kind of starts looking into the
- 11:55Speaker 1: details of the case more and realizes that this guy
- 11:58Speaker 1: couldn't have been the killer because he has webbed fingers
- 12:02Speaker 1: like his you know, the killer used these really intricate
- 12:05Speaker 1: knots to tie the victims up and stuff like that,
- 12:08Speaker 1: And basically he's just like, oh, this guy, There's no
- 12:11Speaker 1: way this guy did it. It would have been impossible.
- 12:13Speaker 1: But despite that, Park is determined to make sure that
- 12:16Speaker 1: this guy goes down for the crime. So he takes
- 12:19Speaker 1: his shoes and goes out to the crime scene and
- 12:22Speaker 1: plants evidence by putting his shoeprints there and then matching
- 12:26Speaker 1: them to his shoe that he just used to shove
- 12:29Speaker 1: into the mud. But despite all of his efforts to
- 12:31Speaker 1: get this guy arrested for the murder, they do have
- 12:34Speaker 1: to let him go. And when they go back to
- 12:36Speaker 1: the office and they're kind of like bickering over all
- 12:38Speaker 1: of this, Sue reveals that he thinks there's already been
- 12:41Speaker 1: a third victim that they just haven't found yet, and
- 12:44Speaker 1: it's a woman that's gone missing. Park is convinced that
- 12:47Speaker 1: she just moved a soul. But I think this is
- 12:50Speaker 1: when they bring up the point of most of the murders,
- 12:53Speaker 1: if not all of the murders are committed during a
- 12:56Speaker 1: rainy night, and this is something that was true to
- 12:58Speaker 1: the case, where if not all of the murders were
- 13:02Speaker 1: committed during or after rainfall, And I think this was
- 13:06Speaker 1: done to kind of help cover up any evidence that
- 13:09Speaker 1: would have been left behind as far as such as
- 13:11Speaker 1: footprints and fingerprints and whatnot. They do end up finding
- 13:14Speaker 1: this third victim, and it's a local lady that everyone
- 13:18Speaker 1: knows well. And most of these crimes were committed near farms,
- 13:22Speaker 1: like farms and fields and whatnot. The guy would usually
- 13:25Speaker 1: hide out in like a big pile of hay, like
- 13:27Speaker 1: a haystack or something, and then jump out and grab people.
- 13:30Speaker 1: He would hide in the fields and jump out at
- 13:32Speaker 1: the people and attack them very suddenly and catch them
- 13:35Speaker 1: off guard and just grab them and pull them down
- 13:38Speaker 1: and tie them up with their own clothes usually, and
- 13:40Speaker 1: then also strangle them with their own clothes. So pretty
- 13:44Speaker 1: like really brutal crimes that were going on in this
- 13:47Speaker 1: small town in South Korea. And we kind of see
- 13:49Speaker 1: that in this next scene where we cut over to
- 13:51Speaker 1: a lady that's going out in the rain to meet
- 13:53Speaker 1: up with a friend. She's just singing a song to
- 13:55Speaker 1: herself with an umbrella in a flashlight, and then she
- 13:58Speaker 1: hears someone whistling along with the song that she's seen,
- 14:01Speaker 1: and she's kind of like, what the fuck was that.
- 14:04Speaker 1: We see a little head peek out of the tall
- 14:06Speaker 1: grass from the field and then duck down before she
- 14:09Speaker 1: notices him. So she realizes what's happening, though with all
- 14:12Speaker 1: the news of the recent murders and just starts she
- 14:16Speaker 1: starts taking off running. The last thing we see as
- 14:18Speaker 1: a man that just kind of like runs out of
- 14:21Speaker 1: the field towards her, like in her flashlight, almost like
- 14:24Speaker 1: an all fours like he just like crawls out of
- 14:26Speaker 1: the grass and fucking grabs her. And from all the reports,
- 14:30Speaker 1: that sounds pretty accurate to what was actually going on there.
- 14:34Speaker 1: We see Inspector Sue at the crime scene. This time
- 14:36Speaker 1: he's doing things a little more thoroughly. He's blocking things
- 14:39Speaker 1: off a little quicker. He's asking, you know, for some
- 14:43Speaker 1: caution tape to be put up at least so people
- 14:45Speaker 1: know where not to go and stuff like that. And
- 14:47Speaker 1: once they collect all the evidence that they can, they're
- 14:49Speaker 1: back at the police station. Park brings up a point
- 14:52Speaker 1: that he thinks is very important and could lead to
- 14:54Speaker 1: the killer. He thinks that it could possibly be a
- 14:57Speaker 1: monk doing the crimes because he thinks that the kill
- 15:00Speaker 1: doesn't have any pubes. I don't know, I don't know why.
- 15:03Speaker 1: I guess because he said he assumed that they would
- 15:06Speaker 1: find more pubes on the victims, or pubes at all,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and I guess they haven't found any. But you know,
- 15:11Speaker 1: it could be the rain, or it could be the
- 15:13Speaker 1: person like you, I don't know, like wiping off the
- 15:16Speaker 1: victim or something like that. I don't know. No one
- 15:19Speaker 1: else takes it seriously. The chief of police just kind
- 15:22Speaker 1: of looks at him like, are you fucking joking me?
- 15:24Speaker 1: And then they just move on. The assistant Miss Kwan.
- 15:27Speaker 1: She puts together that each night that one of these
- 15:29Speaker 1: murders happens, there's a specific song that's requested on this
- 15:33Speaker 1: radio station that she listens to. So she's like, maybe
- 15:36Speaker 1: this has something to do with the murders. It's a
- 15:38Speaker 1: pretty big coincidence. Park just laughs at that, and the
- 15:41Speaker 1: rest of them they kind of realize that she might
- 15:43Speaker 1: be onto something, so they start talking to her more
- 15:45Speaker 1: about it, and they're like, yeah, let's let's get ahold
- 15:47Speaker 1: of the radio station and see what we can figure
- 15:49Speaker 1: out with this. And Park's like, I think I need
- 15:51Speaker 1: to go investigate the baldies. I feel like the chief
- 15:55Speaker 1: at this point is just like, do whatever the fuck
- 15:57Speaker 1: you want, but get the fuck out of my face
- 15:59Speaker 1: with these shitty ida. Check out this new drink from
- 16:01Speaker 1: Panera Bread. It's Adrenochrome sponsored by Panera Bread, and so
- 16:05Speaker 1: at this time in like whatever fucking year this is
- 16:08Speaker 1: nineteen eighty seven or whatever I said. Earlier, radio stations
- 16:11Speaker 1: are taking requests through postcards, so Sue is looking for
- 16:15Speaker 1: a postcard that's requesting this song to be played on
- 16:17Speaker 1: a rainy day so he can track down the person,
- 16:20Speaker 1: hopefully get an address or something. Park does go to
- 16:23Speaker 1: like some bathhouses and just like stares at people's dicks
- 16:26Speaker 1: too for a while, which is there is there are
- 16:28Speaker 1: some moments in this that just feel like kind of
- 16:31Speaker 1: a dark comedy in a way, like this whole thing
- 16:34Speaker 1: where he's just like he's in the locker room and
- 16:36Speaker 1: he's changing, he's naked, and like this other guy next
- 16:40Speaker 1: to him is kind of changing but not facing him,
- 16:42Speaker 1: you know, and he's just like, hey, the guy turns
- 16:44Speaker 1: around and faces him naked, and he just looks at
- 16:46Speaker 1: his dick, and he's like, never mind, that's pretty good.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Park's a good detective, he means, what fucking dumb as
- 16:54Speaker 1: the hell? Though, And after this, his wife suggests maybe
- 16:57Speaker 1: go talk to a shaman and ask the shaman where
- 16:59Speaker 1: the killer. And he does this, and she has him
- 17:02Speaker 1: go to a crime scene, gather mud and pour it
- 17:05Speaker 1: onto some paper and she says, this will reveal the
- 17:08Speaker 1: killer's face. This sounds very silly, but this was something
- 17:11Speaker 1: that actually happened. I guess a psydekick from America called
- 17:16Speaker 1: in and said that she knew that a specific guy
- 17:19Speaker 1: was the killer. And I think he actually got like
- 17:22Speaker 1: arrested and beaten, you know, interrogated and tortured and stuff
- 17:26Speaker 1: like that because of it. And then I think the
- 17:29Speaker 1: wife provided evidence of the guy that was being interrogated
- 17:33Speaker 1: that it wasn't him, and she called back and said
- 17:37Speaker 1: she's in on it too, or something like that. I
- 17:40Speaker 1: can't remember the full story, but I was just like,
- 17:42Speaker 1: this story is fucking insane. The real story behind these
- 17:45Speaker 1: crimes is like a hundred times crazier than this movie is.
- 17:48Speaker 1: The movie's really good, but anyway, so they're pouring mud
- 17:51Speaker 1: on a fucking piece of paper because I think that's
- 17:53Speaker 1: going to help them find the killer. And while this
- 17:55Speaker 1: is going on, Sue starts walking towards the crime scene
- 17:58Speaker 1: and they're seeing this from far away. This is like
- 18:00Speaker 1: being done at night in secret, and they think he's
- 18:03Speaker 1: the killer, so they hide and they watch him and
- 18:05Speaker 1: he's just like smoking a cigarette and listening to the
- 18:08Speaker 1: song that was requested each night. I can't remember what
- 18:10Speaker 1: the song was called. While they're watching him from a
- 18:12Speaker 1: hiding spot, another guy starts walking up with a flashlight,
- 18:16Speaker 1: so Sue hides two so they don't know. Sue doesn't
- 18:19Speaker 1: know that Park and his partner are there, and they're
- 18:21Speaker 1: all hiding watching this new guy who's just some random dude.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And this guy pulls women's underwear out of his pants,
- 18:28Speaker 1: throw him down on the ground and just start jorking
- 18:30Speaker 1: his hog on the hondies and they're just like, holy fuck,
- 18:33Speaker 1: this is the fucking killer. We caught him. As easy
- 18:37Speaker 1: as that. You just gotta wait around in a rice
- 18:39Speaker 1: field at night, and eventually you'll fucking catch the guy.
- 18:42Speaker 1: And so the three of them they'll bust out of
- 18:44Speaker 1: their hiding places and they just start sprinting after the guy.
- 18:46Speaker 1: They're like, hey, you know, put your hog in the air,
- 18:49Speaker 1: you're under arrest. Quit jorking that. This leads to a
- 18:52Speaker 1: great foot chasing where the three of them they're all
- 18:55Speaker 1: just after this guy on foot. They keep having to
- 18:57Speaker 1: run through these alleys and jump over fences and run
- 19:00Speaker 1: through fucking bars and businesses and stuff like that. I
- 19:02Speaker 1: love a great foot chase scene, and this one it
- 19:05Speaker 1: lives up to the hive. This might be a top
- 19:08Speaker 1: ten foot chase scene for me. I don't think it
- 19:10Speaker 1: beats the foot chase scene in the movie Onngbach, though,
- 19:13Speaker 1: that's got a great foot chas scene where the guy's
- 19:15Speaker 1: just like front flipping over fucking fences and diving through
- 19:19Speaker 1: little carts that people drive with their feet. Cannot beat
- 19:22Speaker 1: the Onngbach foot chase scene. Anyway. They lose the guy
- 19:25Speaker 1: in this like construction site thing. I think it's a factory,
- 19:28Speaker 1: but it's basically like they're doing construction shit outside park
- 19:31Speaker 1: sees the guy's underwear sticking out of his pants that
- 19:34Speaker 1: was jerking it, and he's just like, fucking fucker, it's
- 19:38Speaker 1: this guy. I mean, you know, he does this trick
- 19:39Speaker 1: where he looks in his face hard as fucking He's
- 19:41Speaker 1: just like, I know it's this guy just by looking
- 19:44Speaker 1: at him. And really it's because he saw his underwear
- 19:47Speaker 1: sticking out. The guy was wearing some weird fucking red underwear.
- 19:49Speaker 1: I don't know. They look like they had like frills
- 19:51Speaker 1: on him or some shit, like a macho man Randy
- 19:53Speaker 1: Savage pair of underwear or something. Anyway, they arrest him,
- 19:56Speaker 1: and they're just like, that's a bitch, we know you're
- 19:58Speaker 1: the killer. They interrogate him and his wife and they
- 20:01Speaker 1: start to find out that this guy's actually just a
- 20:03Speaker 1: big ass pervert. They find like all sorts of porno
- 20:06Speaker 1: magazines tucked away all over his house. Apparently just sneaks
- 20:10Speaker 1: off and jacks off everywhere or something like that. His
- 20:12Speaker 1: wife's really sick, so he's just constantly jacking off Park.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Despite all this, Park thinks he's the fucking guy. So
- 20:19Speaker 1: he just grabs his ass in a full nelson. His
- 20:22Speaker 1: partner just starts, you know, throwing right and left, hooks
- 20:24Speaker 1: to his ribcage constantly. All the questionable interrogation tactics begin. Immediately,
- 20:30Speaker 1: they're just like, no, he's the fucking guy. I saw him,
- 20:32Speaker 1: I saw his hog, I saw him joking it. I
- 20:34Speaker 1: stared right into his hog with my own two eyes,
- 20:37Speaker 1: and I know he's the fucking guy. Imagine if that's
- 20:39Speaker 1: how Park decided who the killer was. He just like
- 20:41Speaker 1: rips his pants off like hard, ast fucking just stares
- 20:44Speaker 1: at his dick and he's just like fucking really looking
- 20:46Speaker 1: at that thing, and he's just like not the guy,
- 20:49Speaker 1: but actually I feel like most of the time in
- 20:51Speaker 1: the movie, anytime he looks at somebody like that, he's
- 20:53Speaker 1: just like, he's the guy. Let's start fucking waterboarding his ass.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Let's start kicking his ass right now. Honestly, why else
- 21:00Speaker 1: would you become a cop, unless unless you're not trying
- 21:02Speaker 1: to fucking you know, do some kick ass interrogating like this,
- 21:06Speaker 1: like just fucking dropping elbows on some naked guy in
- 21:09Speaker 1: a basement. Somehow in the movie, we don't see all
- 21:12Speaker 1: the tactics that are displayed. He gets this guy to
- 21:15Speaker 1: confess to at least one of the crimes, and this
- 21:18Speaker 1: suspect mentions the outhouse story. Basically, at one point in
- 21:21Speaker 1: the movie, they hear from these high school girls that
- 21:25Speaker 1: there's a rumor going around that the murderer lives in
- 21:28Speaker 1: one of the outhouses at the school. And this happens
- 21:31Speaker 1: because once they figure out that there's the killers attacking
- 21:36Speaker 1: on rainy nights, they start sending out female police officers
- 21:40Speaker 1: that are undercover and under surveillance. This is also something
- 21:44Speaker 1: that they really did once they realize this rainy night thing,
- 21:47Speaker 1: and the only reason it didn't work, or at least
- 21:49Speaker 1: one of the reasons that it didn't work was because
- 21:52Speaker 1: the killer was in prison for a different crime for
- 21:56Speaker 1: like a year. So the the murders stopped like a year.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And it's just because the guy that was doing them
- 22:03Speaker 1: got arrested for some other reason. I can't remember exactly
- 22:05Speaker 1: what it was. But while they're doing these undercover surveillances,
- 22:09Speaker 1: they see these like high school girls walking home and
- 22:11Speaker 1: they stop them and you know, tell them to go
- 22:14Speaker 1: to safety and get you know, they kind of like
- 22:16Speaker 1: bring them home or give them a ride home or
- 22:18Speaker 1: something like that. And they talk about this outhouse story.
- 22:20Speaker 1: So this this horny gut, it's jacking off all the time.
- 22:24Speaker 1: He also mentions this story about there being a guy
- 22:27Speaker 1: in the outhouse, and Sue's kind of like, all right,
- 22:29Speaker 1: I'm going to figure out what the fuck's going on
- 22:31Speaker 1: with this outhouse thing, because this has popped up way
- 22:33Speaker 1: too many times. This can't be a damn coincidence. So
- 22:35Speaker 1: he goes back to the high school and talks to
- 22:39Speaker 1: the kids that he heard that from or whatever, and
- 22:41Speaker 1: then he goes and checks out the outhouses. And when
- 22:44Speaker 1: he investigates this, he finds a nervous woman that lives
- 22:48Speaker 1: near the school. They interview her and find out that
- 22:50Speaker 1: she was attacked by the killer and possibly left for dead,
- 22:54Speaker 1: but she never told anyone about it because she was
- 22:56Speaker 1: in fear for her life. This is also something that
- 22:58Speaker 1: really happened. There were some survivors. This guy, apparently before
- 23:03Speaker 1: he started murdering people, was a serial rapist in the area.
- 23:07Speaker 1: So he would tie women up, raise them, and then leave,
- 23:10Speaker 1: and he would like catch them off guard, like grab
- 23:12Speaker 1: them from behind, and then he would basically grab their
- 23:15Speaker 1: girdle or a shape what's known as shapewhere in Korea.
- 23:18Speaker 1: You would like throw that over their heads so they
- 23:20Speaker 1: couldn't see anything, and then he would tie their hands
- 23:23Speaker 1: up with their bras or whatever and then leave them there.
- 23:27Speaker 1: And this lady, I think he thought was dead. I
- 23:29Speaker 1: think he choked her unconscious or something and then she
- 23:31Speaker 1: played dead or something like that. I can't remember how
- 23:34Speaker 1: accurate the story was in the movie that she told
- 23:36Speaker 1: to like their real life one, but there were quite
- 23:39Speaker 1: a few attacks on women that resulted in rapes that
- 23:42Speaker 1: were never reported, or if they were reported, they just
- 23:45Speaker 1: nobody ever caught the guy obviously, And if you're wondering why,
- 23:51Speaker 1: it's because the DNA technology at this time, especially in
- 23:55Speaker 1: South Korea, was terrible. So then we cut back to Park.
- 23:58Speaker 1: He still has him in under investigation, and he has
- 24:01Speaker 1: him hanging upside down by his feet. Sue runs in
- 24:04Speaker 1: and checks his hands and they're not soft. They're like
- 24:07Speaker 1: really callous. So the lady that he interviewed told him, like,
- 24:10Speaker 1: the guy that attacked me had unusually soft hands, almost
- 24:14Speaker 1: like a woman's hands. And so since this guy's been
- 24:16Speaker 1: working construction and a factory or whatever, his hands aren't
- 24:20Speaker 1: soft at all. They're callousy and bumpy as fuck. So
- 24:22Speaker 1: he's like, we gotta let this guy go. He's definitely
- 24:24Speaker 1: not the guy. That is also a real thing that happened.
- 24:28Speaker 1: The surviving The surviving victims described his hands as like
- 24:33Speaker 1: soft female hands, basically like he had little girly, little
- 24:37Speaker 1: girly ass hands on And it's kind of crazy because
- 24:40Speaker 1: in real life the descriptions of this guy and the
- 24:43Speaker 1: police sketches were apparently incredibly accurate. He describing his height,
- 24:48Speaker 1: his age, and like his possible background. They pretty much
- 24:52Speaker 1: nailed it. And this the guy, the actual killer, was
- 24:55Speaker 1: a suspect that they looked at many times. They just
- 24:58Speaker 1: for whatever reason, didn't torture this specific guy they were
- 25:02Speaker 1: torturing like anybody else that they brought in there. But
- 25:05Speaker 1: I guess this guy just slipped through the cracks and
- 25:07Speaker 1: did not get the torture treatment. Nobody ripped his kneecaps
- 25:10Speaker 1: off his legs or whatever. Okay, back to the movie,
- 25:13Speaker 1: So Sue's like, let this fucking guy go. He's not
- 25:15Speaker 1: the guy. They start fighting and wrestling around Park and
- 25:18Speaker 1: sew are beating the shit out of each other. The
- 25:20Speaker 1: assistant breaks it up by showing them that the song
- 25:22Speaker 1: is playing on the radio and that it's also raining
- 25:25Speaker 1: outside and the song thing is also a real thing.
- 25:27Speaker 1: There was like a song, a really like niche song
- 25:30Speaker 1: that was being requested a lot during this time period,
- 25:33Speaker 1: and they thought that might have had something to do
- 25:34Speaker 1: with it. So right away they declare a state of emergency,
- 25:37Speaker 1: but they can't get anyone to come help. Another thing
- 25:40Speaker 1: that was going on in real life that the movie
- 25:42Speaker 1: covers briefly, but I feel like they do a good
- 25:45Speaker 1: job because you could spend a lot of time on
- 25:47Speaker 1: this is there was a like a South Korean airport
- 25:50Speaker 1: bombing that happened, and there was a lot of suspicion
- 25:54Speaker 1: towards North Korea committing more terror attacks on South Korea
- 25:57Speaker 1: at the time. I think it's because the Olympic were
- 26:00Speaker 1: being hosted in Seoul, so they were like focusing all
- 26:04Speaker 1: of their police manpower towards these terrorist attacks basically, so
- 26:08Speaker 1: like they couldn't get help from any surrounding areas, which
- 26:12Speaker 1: is something that I think they believed that the killer
- 26:15Speaker 1: used to his advantage, like he was also aware of
- 26:17Speaker 1: this that there would be less attention on this small town,
- 26:21Speaker 1: so he knew that he had a better chance of
- 26:23Speaker 1: not being caught. And the next morning there's a body
- 26:26Speaker 1: found the corner finds pieces of peaches shoved into her vagina.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I think they said, like nine peaches, nine slices of peaches,
- 26:34Speaker 1: which is a real thing that really happened. They said,
- 26:36Speaker 1: like the guy started off raping and basically he just
- 26:39Speaker 1: kept escalating his crimes, like they just started becoming more
- 26:43Speaker 1: and more sadistic. And this is something where they think
- 26:46Speaker 1: he was like eating with his victims and like force
- 26:50Speaker 1: feeding them and then also apparently shoving stuff into their vaginas.
- 26:54Speaker 1: And this time, when the song was requested the radio station,
- 26:58Speaker 1: they saved the postcard and it does have the address
- 27:01Speaker 1: on it, so they go, they bust into this fucking
- 27:03Speaker 1: guy's house. They bring him in right away, and he
- 27:06Speaker 1: is quite young looking with soft hands, so they're just like, listen, motherfucker,
- 27:10Speaker 1: you write that letter. And he admits it right away.
- 27:12Speaker 1: He's like, yeah, I wrote the letter. I always requested
- 27:15Speaker 1: to be played on a rainy day. Excuse me. Sue
- 27:18Speaker 1: is questioning him about the radio program because he says
- 27:20Speaker 1: he was home all night listening to it. So he's
- 27:23Speaker 1: just like, if you were at home all night listening
- 27:24Speaker 1: to it, what was the last song that was played
- 27:27Speaker 1: at the end of the hour or whatever. And the
- 27:28Speaker 1: guy's just kind of like, I don't know, I don't
- 27:30Speaker 1: remember that shit. And so he's just like, all right, Bud,
- 27:34Speaker 1: you're getting tortured. But the Chief's like, listen, I don't
- 27:37Speaker 1: want you to torture people anymore. But Park's helper just
- 27:39Speaker 1: fucking flying kicks this guy out of nowhere and knocks
- 27:42Speaker 1: his ass out of his chair, and all hell breaks
- 27:45Speaker 1: because the Chief's like, no, no more fucking drop kicks,
- 27:48Speaker 1: No more fucking hanging up people by their feet. God
- 27:50Speaker 1: damn it. The press is starting to hear about this shit.
- 27:52Speaker 1: And after this Park and Sue are talking about how
- 27:55Speaker 1: frustrating this all is. You kind of see these characters
- 27:59Speaker 1: slowly rift towards each other as the movie goes on,
- 28:03Speaker 1: like Park starts to get more serious about this and
- 28:06Speaker 1: Sue starts to get a little bit more reckless. Where
- 28:09Speaker 1: especially with this suspect, the young guy that they found
- 28:13Speaker 1: out that was requesting the music. He starts to think, like,
- 28:16Speaker 1: maybe we do need to fucking torture this guy because
- 28:19Speaker 1: I don't know if we have any real evidence against
- 28:22Speaker 1: against him, and I'm pretty sure he's the damn guy.
- 28:25Speaker 1: While these two are kind of going over this and
- 28:27Speaker 1: they're kind of hashing out like what they need to
- 28:29Speaker 1: do next, Sue starts to ask him about the first
- 28:32Speaker 1: guy that they interrogated, the mentally disabled guy, And while
- 28:35Speaker 1: they're talking about this, he realizes that this guy must
- 28:39Speaker 1: have at least seen the murder. So they're like, Okay,
- 28:42Speaker 1: we got to go grab that guy again. We need
- 28:44Speaker 1: to talk to his ass again. So they go to
- 28:46Speaker 1: the bar that his family runs, and after the big
- 28:48Speaker 1: fight with the chief, the chief basically told the guy
- 28:51Speaker 1: that's always jump kicking everybody, like, hey, Bud, you're fucking fired.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Get the fuck out. Of here or whatever. At least
- 28:57Speaker 1: he like, let us ask go, probably put his ass
- 28:59Speaker 1: on Proba or something. So they see that guy at
- 29:02Speaker 1: the bar just getting drunk as hell, and he starts
- 29:05Speaker 1: a big fight right away because there's like some college
- 29:07Speaker 1: kids in there that are like talking shit about the
- 29:09Speaker 1: police or whatever. He's just like, this guy has to
- 29:12Speaker 1: fight everybody. He can't like stop himself, so he instantly
- 29:15Speaker 1: starts fucking fighting him and just it's incredibly hectic in
- 29:18Speaker 1: the bar. There's like it's like three v one, but
- 29:21Speaker 1: this guy is just fighting everybody like a fucking animal.
- 29:24Speaker 1: And then the special needs guy gets in there at
- 29:26Speaker 1: some point grabs a piece of wood with a nail
- 29:29Speaker 1: sticking out of it and just slams it into the
- 29:33Speaker 1: torture CoP's leg, And this kind of stops everything because
- 29:36Speaker 1: that guy screams super loud and he's just like what
- 29:38Speaker 1: the fuck, and he pulls the nail out of his
- 29:41Speaker 1: leg and he just has like a big hole in
- 29:43Speaker 1: his leg, and that guy runs off. They do end
- 29:45Speaker 1: up catching him, Park and Sue end up catching him
- 29:48Speaker 1: and they question him about the murderer and he says
- 29:50Speaker 1: that he saw the entire thing that so that lady
- 29:53Speaker 1: that was killed. He would like follow her around because
- 29:56Speaker 1: he thought she was really pretty or whatever, and just
- 29:58Speaker 1: watch her. And apparently he was hiding in a pile
- 30:02Speaker 1: of hay to see what happened, or to watch her
- 30:06Speaker 1: as she walked home or something like that, and he
- 30:09Speaker 1: saw the whole thing. He saw the murder. He says
- 30:12Speaker 1: he saw the killer's face at least three times. So
- 30:14Speaker 1: they start showing him pictures of the latest suspects, and
- 30:17Speaker 1: they're trying to get him to say, like, do you
- 30:19Speaker 1: recognize any of these people? But when they're doing that,
- 30:22Speaker 1: the college kids from the bar show up and they
- 30:24Speaker 1: just start fucking fighting with Park and Seoue, and this
- 30:27Speaker 1: lets the handicap guy run off and get away temporarily.
- 30:31Speaker 1: So they have to fight off these college kids, and
- 30:33Speaker 1: they're like, hey, motherfuckers, we're we're real cops. Leave us alone.
- 30:36Speaker 1: We're trying to fucking do an investigation. I think they
- 30:39Speaker 1: just think that they're random guys beating like up this
- 30:42Speaker 1: mentally handicapped guy. So so Park chases him down. He
- 30:45Speaker 1: gets his college kid beat up or whatever, and he
- 30:48Speaker 1: chases down the guy and the guy is just standing
- 30:52Speaker 1: on the train tracks and he just lets the train
- 30:55Speaker 1: hit him before he could identify of the killer or
- 30:57Speaker 1: anything like that. I think he's scared that he think
- 31:00Speaker 1: that he's going to get tortured again or thrown in
- 31:03Speaker 1: prison over this for some reason. And yeah, so he
- 31:05Speaker 1: just commits suicide via train right in front of Park,
- 31:09Speaker 1: and Park like gets his blood all over him and shit.
- 31:11Speaker 1: So the next step in the investigation is sending off
- 31:14Speaker 1: some of the semen that they found to America for testing.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I guess at this time, this sort of DNA testing
- 31:20Speaker 1: was only available in America, so they have to wait
- 31:24Speaker 1: around for DNA results, which is something that they really
- 31:27Speaker 1: had to deal with at the time. Park takes his
- 31:29Speaker 1: partner to the hospital. They're out and he's just kind
- 31:31Speaker 1: of like, how's your leg, dude, And he lifts it
- 31:33Speaker 1: up and it's all fucking swollen and nasty looking. He's like, hey, buddy,
- 31:37Speaker 1: I think you need to go to the hospital and
- 31:38Speaker 1: get that shit looked at. It looks like he got
- 31:40Speaker 1: something growing in your caf there. And so so basically
- 31:44Speaker 1: he takes him the right away. The doctors are like,
- 31:47Speaker 1: he has tetanus really bad. He should have gotten this
- 31:50Speaker 1: checked out immediately. We're gonna have to cut his fucking
- 31:53Speaker 1: leg off, and this news Park has to sign off
- 31:56Speaker 1: as like his almost like one of his family members,
- 31:58Speaker 1: basically because this guy has no real family nearby I guess,
- 32:02Speaker 1: so par Park signs off on the surgery for him,
- 32:04Speaker 1: and at this point he completely looks defeated. He no
- 32:07Speaker 1: longer looks light hearted or goofy or anything like that.
- 32:10Speaker 1: His whole demeanor has changed. And when he gets home
- 32:13Speaker 1: from this, his wife is just like, you need to
- 32:15Speaker 1: quit your job. She basically just throws it all out
- 32:18Speaker 1: there that she's noticing all the effects that it's having
- 32:20Speaker 1: on him and how miserable he's been lately and how
- 32:22Speaker 1: much this is wearing. Later that night, Sue is keeping
- 32:25Speaker 1: an eye on the most recent suspect, the young guy
- 32:28Speaker 1: that they beat up and eventually had to let go
- 32:31Speaker 1: or whatever. He tries to follow after him, but his
- 32:33Speaker 1: car doesn't start and he takes off on foot, so
- 32:36Speaker 1: he's trying to chase this guy down. It's a rainy night.
- 32:39Speaker 1: He suspects that he's going to be up to no good.
- 32:42Speaker 1: This cuts over to Park's wife. She's out picking up
- 32:44Speaker 1: medical supplies for her job late that night, and we
- 32:47Speaker 1: see someone watching her from the woods, and this is
- 32:50Speaker 1: definitely the killer because he's really honing in on her.
- 32:54Speaker 1: But then a high school girl walks by, going in
- 32:57Speaker 1: the opposite direction, and as Park's why and this high
- 33:00Speaker 1: school girl passed, it, averts his attention to the high
- 33:04Speaker 1: school girl and he goes down there and kills her instead.
- 33:07Speaker 1: And this is the first time in the movie where
- 33:09Speaker 1: the camera really stays on the killer and it actually
- 33:12Speaker 1: shows him tie up a victim and start to attack
- 33:16Speaker 1: them basically. So then we cut to the next morning
- 33:18Speaker 1: in the rain, the press, all the journalists are surrounding
- 33:21Speaker 1: the woods where this girl was found dead. Sue walks
- 33:24Speaker 1: up and he notices right away that it's the same
- 33:27Speaker 1: girl that he was talking to about the outhouse theory.
- 33:31Speaker 1: I think he helped her out earlier. He helped her
- 33:33Speaker 1: put a band aid on her leg or something. And
- 33:36Speaker 1: as soon as he sees that it's her, he just
- 33:38Speaker 1: goes straight for the fucking soft handed guy, the most
- 33:42Speaker 1: recent suspect. He just goes straight to his house and
- 33:45Speaker 1: just starts beating the fuck out of him. He drags
- 33:47Speaker 1: him to the train tracks, where he is just whooping
- 33:50Speaker 1: his ass. He's just fucking pistol whip in his mouth
- 33:52Speaker 1: and shit like that, and the dude just leaking blood.
- 33:55Speaker 1: You know, he's all handcuffed and shit. He pulls his
- 33:57Speaker 1: gun out and just puts it up to his head
- 33:59Speaker 1: and he's just basically saying, like, confess for the murders
- 34:03Speaker 1: or I'm gonna blow your fucking head off right now.
- 34:05Speaker 1: In the middle of all this, Park runs up to
- 34:07Speaker 1: him with the DNA results from America. He's just like, hey, hey,
- 34:11Speaker 1: hold up, I got this. You know, we'll find out
- 34:13Speaker 1: if it's the guy or not. And so he hands
- 34:16Speaker 1: it over to Sue. Sue opens the envelope and looks
- 34:18Speaker 1: at it and you just kind of see him reading
- 34:20Speaker 1: and it says that this guy's DNA does not match.
- 34:23Speaker 1: So he drops the fucking the shit in the rain,
- 34:26Speaker 1: and he's just like son of a bitch because he's
- 34:28Speaker 1: convinced that this guy's the killer still and he can't
- 34:31Speaker 1: handle it at all. It completely frustrates him, completely throws
- 34:33Speaker 1: him over the edge. Park makes the guy look in
- 34:36Speaker 1: his eyes, and this is the first time where he
- 34:38Speaker 1: does the eye test where he says, I don't know
- 34:41Speaker 1: if it's him or not. Every other time he doesn't
- 34:44Speaker 1: really say anything. He just stares at him, and he
- 34:47Speaker 1: kind of gives the impression that, like, this is the guy.
- 34:50Speaker 1: My skills are at work. The eye test never fails.
- 34:53Speaker 1: After that, a train comes. It separates the three of them,
- 34:56Speaker 1: leaving the suspect on the opposite side of the train,
- 34:59Speaker 1: and once the trains go, they see that he's run
- 35:01Speaker 1: halfway down the train tunnel. Sue points his gun and shoots,
- 35:05Speaker 1: and the bullet just kind of ricochets all over the place,
- 35:07Speaker 1: and you just see the guy laying like face down
- 35:09Speaker 1: in the middle of the train tracks. At first, I
- 35:11Speaker 1: was like, ock, he shot him, even though he's clearly
- 35:14Speaker 1: not the killer, but luckily he missed. After this we
- 35:17Speaker 1: cut to two thousand and three. We see Park, his
- 35:20Speaker 1: wife and their two kids. He appears to be a
- 35:22Speaker 1: traveling salesman for a juice extractor, which is pretty cool.
- 35:26Speaker 1: No longer a police officer anymore, probably for the best.
- 35:28Speaker 1: He's on his way to a job and tells the
- 35:30Speaker 1: driver to pull over near the crime scene we saw
- 35:33Speaker 1: at the beginning of the movie. He approaches the concrete
- 35:36Speaker 1: ditch cautiously and bends down to look inside. While he's
- 35:39Speaker 1: looking through the tunnel, a little girl asks if he's
- 35:42Speaker 1: found something in there. The girl tells Park that she
- 35:44Speaker 1: saw a man looking in that hole the other day,
- 35:46Speaker 1: and he told her that he did something there a
- 35:49Speaker 1: long time ago. So Park kind of starts to think,
- 35:52Speaker 1: oh shit, that was probably the killer, and so he
- 35:54Speaker 1: asked her to describe what this man looked like, and
- 35:56Speaker 1: she just says ordinary. He's kind of like, can you
- 35:59Speaker 1: be a little bit more to scripted than that? She
- 36:01Speaker 1: says no, he just kind of looked like an ordinary guy.
- 36:04Speaker 1: He does realize this must have been the killer as
- 36:07Speaker 1: he's staring off in the distance. He quickly turns and
- 36:10Speaker 1: looks right into the camera with his all knowing stare,
- 36:14Speaker 1: and Bung June Ho said that this was a way
- 36:16Speaker 1: for the killer to feel like the audience in the
- 36:20Speaker 1: movie itself was looking at him knowing that he was
- 36:23Speaker 1: going to be caught. One day after that, we get
- 36:25Speaker 1: the credits. So I ended up watching this movie because
- 36:27Speaker 1: I did my crime ranking list last week. I'm just
- 36:30Speaker 1: gonna go ahead and get this out of the way.
- 36:32Speaker 1: I would say for sure this movie would end up
- 36:35Speaker 1: on my top crime movies. It would bump seven off
- 36:38Speaker 1: the list if I kept it out of twenty three
- 36:41Speaker 1: seven would have to get pushed off the list, and
- 36:43Speaker 1: I even think this one would probably land somewhere in
- 36:45Speaker 1: my definitely my top ten, if not my top five
- 36:48Speaker 1: crime movies of all time. Just a really great flick,
- 36:52Speaker 1: really well done. The suspense is great. The way they
- 36:55Speaker 1: add the sound design and the music for this movie,
- 36:58Speaker 1: it just really adds to the tension. The story's super interesting,
- 37:02Speaker 1: and obviously there's a lot more to dig into after
- 37:05Speaker 1: you've watched the movie if you're interested in true crime
- 37:08Speaker 1: stuff at all. So some of the other aspects of
- 37:11Speaker 1: this case that I didn't mention beforehand. In twenty nineteen,
- 37:14Speaker 1: advances in DNA technology linked biological evidence from several crime
- 37:19Speaker 1: scenes to Leen Chun Jay, who is the killer, and
- 37:22Speaker 1: he was already serving a life sentence for murdering his
- 37:25Speaker 1: sister in law. In nineteen ninety four, After being confronted
- 37:28Speaker 1: with the evidence, Lee confessed to all ten Hawaii Song murders,
- 37:32Speaker 1: though investigators officially attributed nine to him and one remains debated,
- 37:36Speaker 1: four additional murders and more than thirty rapes and attempted rapes.
- 37:40Speaker 1: He also provided details that had never been made public,
- 37:43Speaker 1: convincing investigators that his confessions were juniors and the murder
- 37:47Speaker 1: that he was caught for is pretty wild. So this
- 37:50Speaker 1: guy eventually did go on to get married and have
- 37:53Speaker 1: a kid, and surprise, surprise, he's incredibly mean and abusive
- 37:58Speaker 1: to his wife and his son, to the point where
- 38:01Speaker 1: she leaves him, and he's kind of constantly threatening her.
- 38:04Speaker 1: He's calling her saying he's going to do these horrible
- 38:07Speaker 1: things to her, and YadA YadA. He threatens his ex
- 38:10Speaker 1: wife saying that he's going to do something terrible, and she's,
- 38:13Speaker 1: I don't know, probably really scared. I think he was
- 38:15Speaker 1: still committing murders while he was married too. I believe
- 38:19Speaker 1: there's a few other murders that they found out he
- 38:22Speaker 1: was a part of while he was married. I think
- 38:24Speaker 1: he started It sounded like he started going to other
- 38:27Speaker 1: areas and committing basically similar types of murders, but he
- 38:31Speaker 1: was doing them like instead of just catching people near fields,
- 38:34Speaker 1: he would break into someone's house and I think he
- 38:37Speaker 1: murdered a few people that way, which is really fucking awful.
- 38:40Speaker 1: But he calls his ex wife and he says, you know,
- 38:42Speaker 1: I'm going to do something terrible, and then like a
- 38:44Speaker 1: little while later he calls the sister and says like, hey,
- 38:49Speaker 1: I've got all of her stuff packed up. I just
- 38:52Speaker 1: need someone to come get it and I'll help you
- 38:54Speaker 1: load it and all this stuff, and she agrees, the
- 38:57Speaker 1: sister agrees, she goes over there by herself. Unfortunately, this
- 39:01Speaker 1: is just kind of one of those things where it's like, fuck,
- 39:04Speaker 1: you think, not to victim blame her anything, but you
- 39:07Speaker 1: think if your sister leaves this guy because he's been
- 39:09Speaker 1: like threatening her and abusing her and their child like horribly,
- 39:12Speaker 1: you think she would have been like, maybe I should
- 39:14Speaker 1: have some backup here. This guy doesn't seem sane or stable,
- 39:18Speaker 1: maybe a little bit violent obviously, So she goes there
- 39:21Speaker 1: by herself. Right away, He's like, hey, I made some tea.
- 39:24Speaker 1: He gives her some tea loaded up with like fifty
- 39:27Speaker 1: sleeping pills, and almost instantly she starts to feel the
- 39:31Speaker 1: effects of it, and she tries to leave the house,
- 39:33Speaker 1: but he catches her kills her. And this became pretty apparent.
- 39:38Speaker 1: He tried to kind of, you know, roll with it.
- 39:40Speaker 1: He even helped look for her in the investigation and
- 39:43Speaker 1: stuff like that, and was basically just trying to like
- 39:45Speaker 1: be as you know, helpful as possible, but quickly the
- 39:49Speaker 1: police realized, oh, yeah, you talked to her on the
- 39:51Speaker 1: phone and all this shit and you were the last
- 39:53Speaker 1: person that talked to her. Yeah, you know, all all
- 39:55Speaker 1: this stuff, and he's just kind of like what Noah
- 39:58Speaker 1: wasn't and they're like, all right, bitch, to arrest. And
- 40:01Speaker 1: so he was already sent he was sentenced to death,
- 40:03Speaker 1: I think, but then it got switched to a life sentence.
- 40:06Speaker 1: So despite being responsible for all these other horrible murders
- 40:10Speaker 1: and rapes, he was sentenced to a wife in prison
- 40:13Speaker 1: for this specific murder of the sister in law in
- 40:17Speaker 1: nineteen ninety four, so the Hawaii Song murders were open
- 40:20Speaker 1: until twenty nineteen. At that time, he was identified as
- 40:25Speaker 1: the killer, but South Korea had a fifteen year statue
- 40:29Speaker 1: of limitations for murder, so it wasn't actually charged for
- 40:33Speaker 1: these crimes. He did remain in prison for the rest
- 40:35Speaker 1: of his life, though, because of the sister in law murder.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Once people realized that the statute of limitations were coming
- 40:41Speaker 1: up on this case, the outrage that it caused changed
- 40:46Speaker 1: South Korea's statute of limitation laws in twenty fifteen, although
- 40:50Speaker 1: it didn't apply to this because it wasn't retroactive. Well
- 40:54Speaker 1: that's all I have for Memories of Murder. Fantastic movie
- 40:58Speaker 1: five out of five. Next week, I'm going to have
- 41:01Speaker 1: a special guest on here and we're going to be
- 41:03Speaker 1: reviewing the screen three soundtracks, so stick around for that.
