- 0:00The development of existentialism as a
- 0:02philosophical viewpoint on human existence in the world took
- 0:06place primarily during the 19th and 20th centuries.
- 0:10It focused on the apparent lack of meaning in the universe, and
- 0:14thus human significance had to be developed from an individual
- 0:19standpoint of freedom rather than from participation in a
- 0:24larger universal purpose. One of the essential feelings or
- 0:28experiences in existentialism is the recognition that there is
- 0:33essentially no meaning to our existence per SE, and the
- 0:38development of what some of the existentialist called a sense of
- 0:42nausea. As a result of being thrown into
- 0:45an incomprehensible, absurd existence with no real purpose
- 0:50or guidance to follow to figure out how to live our lives, there
- 0:56arises a state of anxiety, or what is called by many
- 1:00existentialists, existential angst.
- 1:05It may be fair to say that the ordinary human being living in
- 1:09ordinary existence without any true sense of his own purpose or
- 1:13the meaning of existence, has at least a part of the experiences
- 1:18declared by the existentialists. The mother describes this as a
- 1:23kind of uncertainty or fog of the being, a feeling of
- 1:27unpleasantness. Her prescription to come out of
- 1:31this state of existential angst is to learn to become clear and
- 1:37to dedicate oneself to the larger purpose which one can
- 1:40discover if one does not get too tightly restricted by the
- 1:44artificial mental blinders that leads the individuals with
- 1:49strong mental development into existentialism as a philosophy
- 1:54of living, the mother writes Quote.
- 2:00You must have a great deal of sincerity, a little courage and
- 2:04perseverance, and then a sort of mental curiosity.
- 2:08You understand, curious, seeking to know, interested, wanting to
- 2:15learn, to love, to learn that one must have in one's nature
- 2:22not to be able to bear standing before something grey, all hazy,
- 2:28in which nothing is seen clearly and which gives you quite an
- 2:32unpleasant feeling. For you do not know where you
- 2:36begin and where you end, what is yours and what is not yours and
- 2:41what is settled and what is not settled.
- 2:45What is this pulp like thing you call yourself in which things
- 2:48get intermingled and act upon one another without even your
- 2:52being aware of it? You ask yourself, but why have I
- 2:57done this? You know nothing about it.
- 3:01And why have I felt that you don't know that either?
- 3:06And then you are thrown into a world outside that is only fog,
- 3:12and you are thrown into a world inside that is also for you
- 3:16another kind of fog, still more impenetrable, which you live
- 3:24like a cork thrown upon the waters, and the waves carry it
- 3:29away or cast it into the air, and it drops and rolls on.
- 3:35That is quite an unpleasant state.
- 3:39I do not know, but to me it appears unpleasant to see
- 3:44clearly, to see one's way, where 1 is going, why 1 is going
- 3:49there, how one is to go there, and what 1 is going to do, and
- 3:54what is the kind of relation with others.
- 3:58But that is a problem so wonderfully interesting.
- 4:02It is interesting, and you can always discover things every
- 4:06minute. You can never have finished your
- 4:09work. There is a time, there is a
- 4:14certain state of consciousness, when you have the feeling that
- 4:18you are in that condition, with all the weight of the world
- 4:21lying heavy upon you. And besides, you are going in
- 4:25blinkers and do not know where you are going.
- 4:28But there is something which is pushing you, and that is truly a
- 4:33very unpleasant condition. And there is another moment when
- 4:391 draws oneself up and is able to see what is there above, and
- 4:44one becomes it. Then one looks at the world as
- 4:47though from the top of a very, very high mountain, and one sees
- 4:52all that is happening below. Then one can choose one's way
- 4:58and follow it. That is a more pleasant
- 5:01condition. This, then, is truly the truth.
- 5:05You are upon earth for that. Surely all individual beings and
- 5:12all the little concentrations of consciousness were created to do
- 5:16this work. Is the very reason for existence
- 5:20to be able to become fully conscious of a certain sum of
- 5:24vibrations representing an individual being and put order
- 5:28therein and find one's way and follow the Way.
