- 0:49podcast, and we are live at the 2024
- 0:53payer issues roundtable.
- 0:55I am joined currently by doctor Wayne Pan,
- 0:58who serves as the medical director for San
- 1:00Francisco Health Plan. So, doctor Pan, thank you
- 1:02for joining me today. We'd love to have
- 1:04our conversation start with you briefly introducing yourself
- 1:07and telling us a little bit more about
- 1:08your current role. Morning, Grace. My name is
- 1:10Wayne Pan. I'm a medical director at San
- 1:13Francisco Health Plan, which is a Medi Cal
- 1:15managed care plan, based in San Francisco.
- 1:18We are serving the indigent population,
- 1:21low income, and also age blind and disabled
- 1:23populations.
- 1:25And my current role is, medical director for
- 1:28as well as for quality improvement appeals and
- 1:31grievances.
- 1:33Wonderful. Well, thank you for taking the time
- 1:35to be here, and let's start our conversation
- 1:38talking about member experience. So from improving member
- 1:41experience and expanding value based care to controlling
- 1:44costs, payer executives have ambitious growth goals for
- 1:47the rest of the year and the new
- 1:49year ahead. So in your role, what is
- 1:51your top priority, and how are you planning
- 1:53to get there?
- 1:54Yeah. I think one of the things that
- 1:56health plan executives
- 1:57overlook is, grievance and appeals. It's an area
- 2:00where it's regulatory defined and, you have to
- 2:04maintain,
- 2:05records and and follow-up on on cases. But
- 2:08in fact, it's actually a great way to
- 2:09understand how your providers are providing services to
- 2:12your members.
- 2:13And member satisfaction is, you know, paramount to,
- 2:16growth in a in a health plan. So,
- 2:18our top priority is really to make sure
- 2:20that the grievance and appeals process is actually
- 2:22working well, and we're taking those insights
- 2:24and actually,
- 2:25acting on them to, actively improve the patient
- 2:28experience.
- 2:30And going off of that, at an industry
- 2:32level, how would you describe the biggest barriers
- 2:34to effectively serving and engaging members? And what
- 2:37opportunities do you see for large scale improvements,
- 2:40and how are you applying this at your
- 2:42current strategy?
- 2:44I think the hardest part right now is,
- 2:46care management, care coordination.
- 2:48A lot of providers are saddled with that
- 2:49responsibility, but they don't actually have the resources
- 2:53within their
- 2:54offices or clinics, to be able to carry
- 2:56out effective care management and care coordination.
- 2:59So that's where the health plans really need
- 3:00to step up so that when they hear
- 3:02about these issues, that they're actually able to
- 3:04solve the problem so that members get the
- 3:06access to the care that they need.
- 3:08And shifting gears to speak to our up
- 3:11and coming leaders out there,
- 3:13keeping pace in today's dynamic health care landscape
- 3:16is challenging.
- 3:17And so what's one piece of advice you'd
- 3:19share with peer leaders to grow their businesses
- 3:21while keeping members top of mind?
- 3:23Yeah. I think one of the things, that
- 3:25health plans need to understand is that being
- 3:27in silos really makes it difficult to solve
- 3:29problems.
- 3:30And so what we see is that making
- 3:32sure that provider relations as well as, contracting,
- 3:36grievance and appeals,
- 3:38all work together to be able to address
- 3:40issues that are typically across departments. And the
- 3:43more that a health plan is able to
- 3:45do that and keeping the patient at the
- 3:47center, the easier it is to solve the
- 3:49problems and and provide a better patient experience.
- 3:52And as we wrap our conversation today, is
- 3:54there anything else you'd like to share as
- 3:56closing remarks on the podcast?
- 3:58So I think in the health care space,
- 4:00particularly for payers, value based care as well
- 4:02as risk adjustment are gonna be tied together.
- 4:05And to be able to have a process,
- 4:08as patient centered would be the best way
- 4:09to be able to adjust,
- 4:11the internal processes as well as external processes
- 4:14so that,
- 4:15patients and payers and and providers can all
- 4:17work together, to achieve the best results.
- 4:20Wonderful. Well, doctor Pan, thank you for joining
- 4:22me today on the Becker's healthcare podcast. Again,
- 4:25we're live at the 2024
- 4:27payer issues roundtable.
- 4:28Alright. Thanks, Grace.
