Transcript
- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Tuesday the 23rd of April
- 0:18and here we are ready to read another chapter of God's word.
- 0:21I hope your day is looking good or has been a good one.
- 0:25And the good news is that no matter how your day was, it has
- 0:28to be better than poor old King David and the way that his days
- 0:32are going to be shaping. Because while God said that he
- 0:35would not die from his sin with Bathsheba, unfortunately this
- 0:40has consequences for his family. And the rest of this week and
- 0:43beyond we will see those consequences playing out through
- 0:47his children and the way that violence and death and and
- 0:52betrayal will now become part of his family.
- 0:56Just another example of what God has made so good.
- 0:59And we have a habit of messing up, but still God has a habit of
- 1:05continuing to walk with us even through the mess we've made.
- 1:07And he is gracious to us and I'm certainly grateful for that.
- 1:11And I reckon you might be too, friend.
- 1:15So yes, with a heavy heart, we need to read through these sad,
- 1:20sad turns that happen in his family.
- 1:23But in the midst of all this, Holy Spirit, may we see you at
- 1:26work, and may you share something of you to touch us so
- 1:32that we leave this reading a change people knowing you more
- 1:38fully. Alright, friends, let's read it.
- 1:42Let's read Second Samuel chapter 13
- 1:55now. David's son Absalom had a
- 1:58beautiful sister named Tamar, and Amnon, her half brother,
- 2:02felt desperately in love with her.
- 2:05Amnon became so obsessed with Tamar that he became ill.
- 2:09She was a virgin and Amnon thought he could never have her.
- 2:13But Amnon had a very crafty friend, his cousin Jonadab.
- 2:18He was the son of David's brother Shemia.
- 2:20One day, Jonadab said to Amnon, What's the trouble?
- 2:25Why should the son of a king look so dejected?
- 2:28Morning after morning, Sir, Amnon told him.
- 2:31I am in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.
- 2:36Well, Jonadab said. I'll tell you what to do.
- 2:40Go back to bed and pretend you were ill.
- 2:42When your father comes to see you, ask him to let Tamar come
- 2:46and prepare some food for you. Tell him you'll feel better as
- 2:49she prepares it as you watch and feeds you with her own hands.
- 2:53Sir Amnon lay down and pretended to be sick, and when the king
- 2:57came to see him, Amnon asked him, Please let my sister Tamar
- 3:01come and cook my favourite dishes I watch, then I can eat
- 3:05it from her own hands. So David agreed and sent Tamar
- 3:10to Amnon's house to prepare some food for him.
- 3:13When Tamar arrived at Amnon's house, she went to the place
- 3:16where he was lying down so he could watch her mix some dough.
- 3:21Then she baked his favourite dish for him.
- 3:24But when she set the serving tray before him, he refused to
- 3:27eat. Everyone get out of here, Amnon
- 3:31told his servants. So they all left.
- 3:33Then he said to Tamar, Now bring the food into my bedroom and
- 3:38feed it to me. Here, Sir.
- 3:40Tamar took his favourite dish to him but as she was feeding him,
- 3:44he grabbed her and demanded. Come to bed with me, my darling
- 3:49sister. No, my brother, she cried.
- 3:52Don't be foolish, don't do this to me.
- 3:55Such wicked things aren't done in Israel.
- 3:58Where could I go in my shame? And you would be called one of
- 4:02the greatest fools in Israel. Please just speak to the king
- 4:06about it and he will let you marry me.
- 4:09But Amnon wouldn't listen to her, and since he was stronger
- 4:12than she was, he raped her. Then suddenly, Amnon's love
- 4:17turned to hate, and he hated her even more than he had loved her.
- 4:22Get out of here, he snarled at her.
- 4:25No, no, Tamar cried. Sending me away now is worse
- 4:30than what you've already done to me.
- 4:33But Amnon wouldn't listen to her.
- 4:35He shouted for his servant and demanded throw this woman out
- 4:39and lock the door behind her. So the servant put her out and
- 4:44locked the door behind her. She was wearing a long,
- 4:47beautiful robe, as was the custom in those days for the
- 4:50King's virgin daughters, but now Tamar tore her robe and put
- 4:55ashes on her head, and then, with her face in her hands, she
- 5:00went away crying. Her brother Absalom saw her and
- 5:04asked. Is it true that Amnon has been
- 5:07with you? Well, my sister, keep quiet for
- 5:12now. Since he's your brother, don't
- 5:14you worry about it. So Tamar lived as a desolate
- 5:18woman in her brother's Absalon's house.
- 5:22When King David heard what had happened, he was very angry and
- 5:26though Absalom never spoke to Amnon about this, he hated Amnon
- 5:30deeply because of what he had done to his sister.
- 5:35Two years later when Absalom sheep were being sheared at Baal
- 5:39Hazor near Ephram, Absalom invited all the King's son to
- 5:44come to a feast. He went to the king and said, My
- 5:47sheep shearers are now at work with the king and his servants.
- 5:51Please come down to celebrate the occasion with me, the king
- 5:55replied. No, my son, if we all came, we
- 5:59would be too much of A burden for you, Absalom pressed him.
- 6:03But the king would not come, though he gave Absalom his
- 6:06blessing. Well then, Absalom said.
- 6:09If you can't come, how about sending my brother Amnon with
- 6:13us? Why I am non?
- 6:15The king asked. But Absalon kept on pressuring
- 6:18the king until he finally agreed to let all his sons attend,
- 6:22including Amnon. So Absalom prepared a feast fit
- 6:26for a king. Absalom told his men.
- 6:30Wait until Amnon gets drunk. Then at my signal, kill him.
- 6:35Don't be afraid. I'm the one who's given the
- 6:38command. Take courage and do it so it
- 6:41Absalom signal they murdered Abdon and the other sons of the
- 6:46king jumped on their mules and fled.
- 6:49As they were on their way back to Jerusalem, this report
- 6:52reached David Absalom has killed all the King's sons.
- 6:56Not one is left alive. The king got up, tore his robe
- 7:01and threw himself on the ground. His advisors also tore their
- 7:05clothes in a horror and sorrow. But just then Jonadab, the son
- 7:11of David's brother Shemya arrived and said no, don't
- 7:15believe that all the kings sons have been killed.
- 7:18It was only a Bnon. Absalon has been plotting this
- 7:21ever since Amnon raped his sister Tamar.
- 7:24No my Lord the king, your sons aren't all dead.
- 7:27It was only Agnon. Meanwhile, Absalom escaped.
- 7:33Then the Watchmen on the Jerusalem wall saw a great crowd
- 7:37coming down the hill on the road from the West.
- 7:40He ran to tell the King. I see a crowd of people coming
- 7:44from the Horror Name Rd along the side of the hill.
- 7:47Look, Jonadab told the king. There they are now.
- 7:51The King's sons are coming, just as I said.
- 7:54They soon arrived weeping and sobbing, and the King and all
- 7:58his servants wept bitterly with them, and David mourned many
- 8:03days for his son Amnon. Absalom fled to his grandfather.
- 8:08Tell me, son of a Mayhood, the king of Gesher.
- 8:12He stayed there in Gesha for three years, and King David, now
- 8:16reconciled to Amnon's death, longed to be reunited with his
- 8:20son Absalom. Lord, as we read these words, it
- 8:34all feels a little hopeless and just so broken.
- 8:39But Lord, we know that this is not the entire story, not
- 8:44David's life, not the lives of his sons and all those
- 8:47generations. This is not the whole story, but
- 8:51we know that you have sent us your Son and that he has
- 8:57redeemed all of us. He has made a way to make all of
- 9:01this brokenness right again and present us before you, holy and
- 9:06blameless, sanctified daily, again and again and again,
- 9:10because you know how much we need that.
- 9:14And as we live our lives and we find ourselves in situations,
- 9:18often even of our own making, that just feels so broken, Lord,
- 9:23help us lean into your wholeness and that your wholeness can
- 9:28cover over no matter how deeply broken we are.
- 9:33It's like a healing balm. It can cover over that
- 9:36brokenness and it can present us before you, Lord, How and loved.
- 9:47We don't get how that works, but Gee, we are grateful for it.
- 9:53And so we love you, and we praise you, and we worship you,
- 9:57our saving God, and all in the saving name of Jesus.
- 10:02We pray these things, I'm in.
