- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. Hello, welcome, Welcome.
- 0:16Not just to a new week on Monday.
- 0:18Welcome not just to the 5th of February, but welcome to a whole
- 0:22new year of reading the Bible. Yes, we have just put together
- 0:27the final touches on the next 12 months of reading, where we'll
- 0:32go, what we'll read and that is now available in the show notes.
- 0:35There's a link to the next year of Bible verses.
- 0:39Try again chapters that. There's lots of verses that we
- 0:42very, very long document. No, the Bible chapters that
- 0:45we'll be reading over the next year.
- 0:47Have a click on it. Have a read.
- 0:48There is so much that we are going to enjoy, from gospels to
- 0:54epistles to more stories of the times of the Old Testament when
- 0:59we see God's people being shaped so much that we will enjoy this
- 1:04year together. I cannot even wait.
- 1:06But here we are halfway through. Not halfway through, almost all
- 1:11the way through the book of First Samuel.
- 1:12We have only got a couple of weeks more in this book and this
- 1:16week begins the time. Well, there's been a few things
- 1:20that have needed to be established in the book, right?
- 1:22Firstly, that saw there's really not up to the job of being king.
- 1:27Secondly, that David's character is up to the job of being king.
- 1:31And thirdly, and David was never aggressive in trying to steal
- 1:36the kingship from Saul. And this week, particularly
- 1:39today, we start to hear about that David could have indeed
- 1:43ended Saul's life and taken the crown, but that's not what he
- 1:46did. So this is just the end of this
- 1:49trifecta of pointing out David's character and how he came to
- 1:55bear the throne, the crown, the ruling of Israel.
- 1:59So all that aside, let's read together, friends.
- 2:02Let us read together first Samuel chapter 24.
- 2:16After Saul returned from fighting the Philistines, he was
- 2:19told that David had gone into the wilderness of Engedi.
- 2:23So Saul chose 3000 elite troops from all Israel, and went to
- 2:28search for David and his men near the rocks of the wild
- 2:31goats. At the place where the road
- 2:34passes some sheep folds, Saul went into a cave to relieve
- 2:38himself. But as it happened, David and
- 2:41his men were hiding farther back in that very cave.
- 2:46NASA opportunity, David's men whispered to him.
- 2:49Today the Lord is telling you I will certainly put your enemy
- 2:53into your power to do with as you wish.
- 2:56Sir David crept forward and cut off a piece of the Hymn of
- 3:01Soul's robe. But then David's conscience
- 3:04began bothering him because he had cut soul's robe.
- 3:07He said to his men. The Lord forbid that I should do
- 3:11this to my Lord the king. I shouldn't attack the Lord's
- 3:14anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him, said
- 3:18David restrained his men and did not let them kill Saul.
- 3:23After Saul had left The Cave and gone on his way, David came out
- 3:26and shouted after him, my Lord the king.
- 3:30And when Saul looked around, David bowed low before him.
- 3:34Then he shouted the soul. Why do you listen to the people
- 3:38who say I'm trying to harm you? This very day, you can see with
- 3:42your own eyes It isn't true, for the Lord placed you at my mercy.
- 3:47Back there in The Cave, some of my men told me to kill you, But
- 3:51I spared you, for I said I will never harm the King.
- 3:55He is the Lord's appointed one. Look, my father, at what I have
- 4:00in my hand. It is a piece of the hem of your
- 4:03robe. I cut it off.
- 4:04But I didn't kill you. This proves that I'm not trying
- 4:08to harm you, and that I've not sinned against you, even though
- 4:12you have been hunting for me to kill me.
- 4:15May the Lord judge between us. Perhaps the Lord will punish you
- 4:19for what you were trying to do to me, but I will never harm
- 4:22you. As that old proverb says, from
- 4:26evil people come evil deeds. So you can be sure I will never
- 4:30harm you. Who is the king of Israel trying
- 4:33to catch anyway? Should he spend his time chasing
- 4:37one who is as worthless as a dead dog or a single flea, may
- 4:41the Lord therefore judge which of us is right and punish the
- 4:45guilty one. He is my advocate and he will
- 4:48rescue me from your power. When David had finished
- 4:52speaking, Saul called back. Is that really you, my son
- 4:58David? Then he began to cry, and he
- 5:01said to David, You are a better man than I am, for you have
- 5:06repaid me good for evil. Yes, you have been amazingly
- 5:10kind to me today. For when the Lord put me in a
- 5:14place where you could have killed me, you didn't do it.
- 5:18Who else would let his enemy get away when he had him in his
- 5:22power? May the Lord reward you well for
- 5:25the kindness you have shown me today.
- 5:28And now I realise that you are surely going to be king, and
- 5:33that the Kingdom of Israel will flourish under your rule.
- 5:37Now swear to me by the Lord that when this happens, you will not
- 5:40kill my family and destroy my line of descendants.
- 5:44Sir David promised this to Paul with an oath.
- 5:47Then Saul went home, but David and his men went back to their
- 5:51stronghold. Our Lord, how often do these
- 6:04quick victories present themselves to us?
- 6:07Far more than David had opportunity to kill Saul, that's
- 6:11for sure. Whether it's sneaking something
- 6:15that isn't ours. Whether it's not taking the
- 6:18effort to share that kind word. When you know it would be of
- 6:21such great benefit to the hero. So many times when we can just
- 6:28sneak a little victory for ourselves that you call us to a
- 6:32better way. You call us to a bigger vision a
- 6:36bigger picture where your kingdoms priorities are set.
- 6:43Lord continue to draw us to your way.
- 6:46Thank you for the example of David as he continues not to
- 6:50take the quick victory, but to pursue your values and the
- 6:55fruits of your spirit well up inside of him.
- 6:58May that be true of us as well. Holy Spirit, come, continue to
- 7:04shape us. Shape us in your service as
- 7:07living sacrifices. We love you, Jesus, and we pray
- 7:12all of this in your name. Ah man.
