2:27
Speaker 5: Here are you?
2:27
Speaker 3: I am doing fine, Thank you for being here, Thanks
2:30
Speaker 3: for having us. All right, so what you got going
2:32
Speaker 3: on here? Big announcement, Oh big announcement. Night ready, betast
2:36
Speaker 3: of All twenty twenty six.
2:37
Speaker 6: We've set the dates. It's going to start on May
2:40
Speaker 6: twenty second, and we're going to go for ten full
2:42
Speaker 6: days of programming running from May twenty second to May
2:45
Speaker 6: thirty first.
2:46
Speaker 3: Now, this is going to be your first one as
2:48
Speaker 3: the director, because you came on when it was already
2:51
Speaker 3: I guess you know, yeah, it was already planned.
2:55
Speaker 7: At that point.
2:55
Speaker 6: I started in August, so my first official event was
2:58
Speaker 6: our fall event Fest Fall in October. So this will
3:02
Speaker 6: be my first actual festival, and we had a little
3:05
Speaker 6: bit of an abbreviated I say we, I wasn't on
3:07
Speaker 6: board yet. We had an abbreviated festival in twenty twenty
3:10
Speaker 6: five is one weekend.
3:11
Speaker 3: But this this year we're back back to the full day.
3:14
Speaker 3: Back to the full day and give us the dates again.
3:16
Speaker 6: May twenty second through the thirty first.
3:18
Speaker 3: And on the morning like today, you know, and we're
3:21
Speaker 3: not even officially.
3:22
Speaker 6: I'm already living in the spring. Were already all I'm thinking.
3:25
Speaker 3: We haven't even officially entered winter. We're in what's known
3:27
Speaker 3: as meteorological winter, right, but winter doesn't officially start until
3:32
Speaker 3: sometime later in the month. But you're already thinking about it.
3:35
Speaker 3: Doesn't affect me at all.
3:36
Speaker 6: All I'm thinking about is May.
3:37
Speaker 3: All right, So what have you been up to so far?
3:40
Speaker 3: I mean, I know, with the planning and everything, because
3:42
Speaker 3: now I think the woman to talk to you before
3:43
Speaker 3: you were just kind of getting your feet wet a
3:45
Speaker 3: little bit. Now now that your feet are soaked, what
3:47
Speaker 3: are we doing now?
3:48
Speaker 6: Well, one other thing we launched today and if you
3:50
Speaker 6: want to check it out on festival Charleston dot com.
3:53
Speaker 6: We launched an application if people have ideas for events
3:57
Speaker 6: or art installations, anything like that, they'd like to say
4:00
Speaker 6: see in fest of All twenty twenty six. There's an
4:02
Speaker 6: application on the website you can fill out. Our organization's
4:05
Speaker 6: got twenty two years of experience putting on stuff in Charleston,
4:08
Speaker 6: and if somebody's got a great idea and they just
4:10
Speaker 6: wonder how to get it off the ground, we can
4:13
Speaker 6: provide some support for them and help them make it
4:16
Speaker 6: a reality. And we'd love you know, somebody's got a
4:18
Speaker 6: great idea, we'd love to include it infest.
4:20
Speaker 3: And that's what I love about this, And I love
4:24
Speaker 3: the fact that when we have these events in Charleston
4:26
Speaker 3: that people are willing to listen to the public. So
4:29
Speaker 3: now's the time if you've got an idea, yep, you
4:31
Speaker 3: know for fest of All, don't take it to social
4:34
Speaker 3: media and say why don't they do this or why
4:37
Speaker 3: don't they Don't get me started on that, boys, but
4:41
Speaker 3: you're asking for people.
4:42
Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, there are so many creative people in
4:44
Speaker 6: our community. I'm sure somebody's got some great ideas for
4:48
Speaker 6: some you know, whether it's theater or dance, music, visual art,
4:52
Speaker 6: anything like that. We'd love to hear your ideas and
4:54
Speaker 6: we'd love to help you bring it to life. And
4:56
Speaker 6: where can people festival Charleston dot com.
4:59
Speaker 3: All right about Christmas, I mean we just got over thanksgivving.
5:01
Speaker 3: You're all excited about that.
5:02
Speaker 6: I was trying to get my shopping done.
5:05
Speaker 3: Well yeah, I mean, if you're at least thinking about
5:07
Speaker 3: that's more than what most guys have done at this point.
5:10
Speaker 6: I think I'm buying most of my gifts from the
5:12
Speaker 6: TikTok shop this year.
5:15
Speaker 3: Shop local. I know, shop he's Kidding's kiddy, I'm kitdty
5:20
Speaker 3: he's kidding.
5:21
Speaker 8: Uh.
5:21
Speaker 3: You going to Taylor Books after we get there, go
5:24
Speaker 3: to Taylor Books, go to Capitol Market. Yeah, that's right.
5:27
Speaker 6: I mean, all the all the old Daily Mail colleague
5:30
Speaker 6: Chuck McGill just took over over there.
5:32
Speaker 3: He was on the show last week. I heard it.
5:34
Speaker 7: It was great.
5:34
Speaker 3: He was on the show. Well, half of it was good.
5:36
Speaker 3: His part was good. So so I'm glad that all
5:38
Speaker 3: you folks from the newspaper business are finding gameful employees
5:43
Speaker 3: taking over. That's it. You got Michaelhanny here and of
5:46
Speaker 3: course and you guys. So that's good. Amelia, it was
5:50
Speaker 3: Amelia and I think maybe she interned there years.
5:53
Speaker 6: Okay, that was for my time.
5:54
Speaker 3: As says, he's a lot younger than we are, but
5:56
Speaker 3: I think because she was a part of it as well. Hey,
5:58
Speaker 3: you're feel free to hang out here with me one second.
6:00
Speaker 3: Since I double booked you guys, we got Sean Hill
6:03
Speaker 3: from KRT here. Sean, Welcome to the show Man. How
6:07
Speaker 3: you knowing Sarah? Thanks for having me you guys. Actually,
6:09
Speaker 3: of course it's Charleston. Everybody. Everybody talks about Charles and
6:11
Speaker 3: being such a big town, everybody in this town knows everybody.
6:14
Speaker 3: So when I end invertently and I will go ahead
6:17
Speaker 3: and telling myself now, I don't care. It was just
6:18
Speaker 3: one of those things. I walked downstairs and Zach was
6:21
Speaker 3: set there and I was like, uh, please tell me
6:24
Speaker 3: you're not here to see me. And that's always the
6:27
Speaker 3: bright way to start a conversation first thing. Please tell
6:30
Speaker 3: me you're not here to see me. Normally I just
6:31
Speaker 3: say that to you know, police officers or something, but
6:35
Speaker 3: I said it to him this time. And we had
6:37
Speaker 3: a little mix up on the schedule. I'd forgot I
6:39
Speaker 3: had scheduled him for today. But you're a good sport
6:41
Speaker 3: about it. He was too, and so have him hang
6:44
Speaker 3: out here for a minute. But I want to have
6:45
Speaker 3: you on Sean Hill from KRT because big announcement was made.
6:48
Speaker 3: You guys got some money coming in.
6:50
Speaker 9: We did, and also to make you look even better, Dave.
6:53
Speaker 9: Last month and Halloween, Zach and I worked together with
6:56
Speaker 9: the Charleston City Department of Art to unveil the newest
6:59
Speaker 9: art bus. So you've seen it around. It has some
7:01
Speaker 9: cryptid creatures on there. So Kart enjoys working with the
7:04
Speaker 9: festival on zachcdoon great partners, looking forward to what he does.
7:07
Speaker 3: But this was my great plan and all that figure out.
7:10
Speaker 7: That was just a happy little accident. Yes, that's exactly
7:13
Speaker 7: all that one. All right, No, you're exactly right, Dave.
7:16
Speaker 9: We're very thrilled that last week we were awarded a
7:20
Speaker 9: twenty one point twenty five million dollar grant to really
7:25
Speaker 9: reconstruct a maintenance facility at KRT. It's one of those
7:29
Speaker 9: things that you don't think about a lot, and it's
7:31
Speaker 9: it's not as exciting to our passengers, but for us
7:33
Speaker 9: who realize how important it is to keep these vehicles.
7:37
Speaker 7: Running every single day.
7:38
Speaker 9: Having an operations team is important and having the best
7:42
Speaker 9: schedules is important, but keeping those buses running is the heartbeat.
7:46
Speaker 3: If you don't have a bus out on the road
7:47
Speaker 3: doesn't make any difference.
7:48
Speaker 9: It doesn't matter if I have the best looking schedule
7:50
Speaker 9: on the planet if I can't get a bus that
7:52
Speaker 9: a driver can drive.
7:54
Speaker 3: And that facility that you've been using had had a
7:56
Speaker 3: little age on it, right, it did.
7:58
Speaker 9: Yes, it's about eighty five years. That's like Ron Hughes age.
8:02
Speaker 9: It's Ron hughes Ish. I think he was there at
8:04
Speaker 9: the groundbreaking maybe, but uh, you know, there were some
8:07
Speaker 9: challenges with that facility. Just the heights of the ceilings,
8:10
Speaker 9: et cetera. Created a scenario where it was really hard
8:13
Speaker 9: to adapt to new even new technologies, new fuels, et cetera.
8:18
Speaker 9: And also just safety is are number one thing. So
8:21
Speaker 9: it was kind of like having a used car that
8:22
Speaker 9: you were continuously, you know, every time you had to
8:24
Speaker 9: change the oil or put new tires on it, you
8:27
Speaker 9: kind of you get you don't want to do it.
8:29
Speaker 9: So we've been putting band aids on this building for
8:31
Speaker 9: years and this is the third time. We're at fourth
8:35
Speaker 9: in Stockton, and that's where the building will be. What
8:37
Speaker 9: we're planning to do is essentially flip our parking lot
8:41
Speaker 9: with our existing maintenance facility. So for a portion of
8:44
Speaker 9: time we'll be constructing a new facility on our parking lot,
8:47
Speaker 9: and then the next step will be to demo that
8:49
Speaker 9: existing maintenance facility and turn it into a parking lot.
8:51
Speaker 9: So we're just going to do a big flip. We're
8:52
Speaker 9: going to stay in our neighborhood. We love being on
8:54
Speaker 9: the West side of Charleston, and the communities embraced this change,
8:58
Speaker 9: and it's going to be a big deal for our
8:59
Speaker 9: pass because that means our buses are going to stay
9:02
Speaker 9: on the road more often, less downtime. And again, I
9:06
Speaker 9: want to make sure I think that our federal partners,
9:08
Speaker 9: Senator Capito, Justice, congress Woman Miller, even Senator former Senator Mansion.
9:13
Speaker 9: You know, we started as three years ago and they
9:14
Speaker 9: helped with a congressionally directed spending award for us. So
9:18
Speaker 9: this has been a long time coming, but we didn't
9:20
Speaker 9: give up and we were excited about it.
9:21
Speaker 3: Sounds good again. We're talking with Sean Hill from KRT
9:24
Speaker 3: to Dave Island Show and five eighty Live is brought
9:26
Speaker 3: to you aparted by Bridge Valley Community and Technical College,
9:28
Speaker 3: insurance agents are in demand of the state and all
9:30
Speaker 3: across the country. Bridge Valley can help you take that
9:32
Speaker 3: first step their insurance pre sales Licenser course. We'll prepare
9:35
Speaker 3: you to send for the state required Property and Casualty
9:37
Speaker 3: Insurance Licenser Exam to start your career in this ever
9:39
Speaker 3: growing field. Checkout Bridge Valley dot edu for details Bridge
9:43
Speaker 3: Valley Community Technical College. Your career starts here. All right,
9:45
Speaker 3: So last time we had you on, we were you
9:47
Speaker 3: come on every now and need to talk about some
9:49
Speaker 3: upgrades and some different things going on. How's everything going,
9:52
Speaker 3: what's new?
9:53
Speaker 7: Yeah, so it's going really well.
9:54
Speaker 9: Last time we were on here, we talked about adding
9:56
Speaker 9: three new care T plus zones. Those are the on
9:59
Speaker 9: demand zones that visuals can get on their phone or
10:01
Speaker 9: they can call onto our office and schedule a ride.
10:03
Speaker 7: Those have been successful so far.
10:05
Speaker 9: The two routes that were replaced entirely by the k
10:08
Speaker 9: r T plus on demand project have have been successful
10:12
Speaker 9: so far. We haven't had there was that concern of it.
10:16
Speaker 9: We want to make sure they overlap for a while
10:17
Speaker 9: so passengers can get used to it. So when those
10:20
Speaker 9: the fixed route buses stopped coming, it's not a huge impact,
10:23
Speaker 9: and I'm really happy and proud of my team for
10:25
Speaker 9: putting in the work to educate those passengers to make
10:28
Speaker 9: that as seamless as possible. And so far, knock on Wood,
10:31
Speaker 9: we've we've we've accomplished that. So I'm really proud of that.
10:33
Speaker 3: Do you see an uptick in ridership during the holiday season,
10:38
Speaker 3: We do it.
10:39
Speaker 7: It's kind of weather dependent. On days like today, sometimes.
10:42
Speaker 9: People are less likely to get out, but we do
10:44
Speaker 9: see definitely our routes that go up to South Ridge
10:48
Speaker 9: and some of the shopping centers we see an increase.
10:51
Speaker 7: But again, it just depends on the weather.
10:53
Speaker 3: Also, do you see people that maybe on a day
10:58
Speaker 3: that we have inclement weather that may choose if they
11:00
Speaker 3: have to go to work to you know, say yeah,
11:02
Speaker 3: I'm not gonna, I'm not I'm not gonna risk this,
11:04
Speaker 3: I'm gonna I'm gonna take the bus.
11:05
Speaker 7: We do actually so this day.
11:07
Speaker 9: That's why we were very cognizant of the fact that
11:09
Speaker 9: when it's the weather is harsh to make sure we've
11:11
Speaker 9: got our street supervisors out and making sure that's.
11:13
Speaker 7: Safe for us.
11:14
Speaker 9: The good thing is a bus performs pretty well on snow,
11:17
Speaker 9: you know, there's not a vehicle on the planet that
11:19
Speaker 9: does on ice but snow.
11:24
Speaker 3: Well, okay, I think he accidentally turned your microphone.
11:26
Speaker 7: Off I did. Yeah, that's my fault, that's what I
11:29
Speaker 7: was saying.
11:30
Speaker 3: I thought it. Say that again, say what I.
11:32
Speaker 7: Was Yes, that my fault there.
11:34
Speaker 9: What I was saying was our vehicles perform extremely well
11:36
Speaker 9: and snow, but not so great on ice. And so
11:39
Speaker 9: again that's like any vehicle. So on days that are
11:41
Speaker 9: rough weather, if you don't want to worry about taking
11:43
Speaker 9: the risk of taking your car out, hop on a
11:45
Speaker 9: k r T.
11:45
Speaker 7: We'll get you there. We'll get you there safely.
11:47
Speaker 3: What kind of decisions now again, and you know what
11:50
Speaker 3: we saw today is basically I mean here, I don't
11:52
Speaker 3: know what it is where our listeners are, but downtown
11:54
Speaker 3: Charleston we got a little bit of snow there. It's
11:55
Speaker 3: almost nothing. It was raining when I came in. It's
11:57
Speaker 3: one of the moost nothing here. Other areas though, are seen,
12:00
Speaker 3: you know a little bit more. Boy goes into the decision.
12:02
Speaker 3: So when we do eventually get into winter and we
12:05
Speaker 3: have these bad situation, one goes into the decision not
12:07
Speaker 3: to run buses exactly.
12:08
Speaker 9: So we have street supervisors who go out, They start
12:11
Speaker 9: at two or three in the morning, dependent on the
12:13
Speaker 9: actual route they and they do exactly that. They drive
12:16
Speaker 9: the routes, they check them, they see and every one
12:19
Speaker 9: of our street supervisors is a former operator, so they've
12:22
Speaker 9: driven the routes themselves, so they're familiar with what a
12:25
Speaker 9: bus is and isn't capable of. And then we relay
12:28
Speaker 9: that back to dispatch and we make the call of hey,
12:29
Speaker 9: should we wait a little bit, should we maybe open
12:32
Speaker 9: up this route a little bit later than normal and
12:34
Speaker 9: give the highways a chance to clear up the roads.
12:36
Speaker 3: Basically like public schools.
12:38
Speaker 9: Exactly for the most part, exactly, yeah, with less pressure
12:41
Speaker 9: because we don't have the kids to get on school
12:42
Speaker 9: at time. But we do appreciate the responsibility of getting
12:46
Speaker 9: people to work on time. That's a huge, huge priority
12:48
Speaker 9: for us, so we take it very seriously. But we
12:51
Speaker 9: want to make sure we're not putting anyone in an
12:53
Speaker 9: unsafe position. But thankfully, again knock on wood, the last
12:56
Speaker 9: several years, we've had great success with weighing that when
13:00
Speaker 9: should we stop and when should we not?
13:01
Speaker 3: In a texture says, is the bus request available for
13:03
Speaker 3: people who work nights and don't get off till after midnight.
13:06
Speaker 9: Right now, are on demand service runs from six am
13:09
Speaker 9: to six pm, so that's a little bit tougher. We're
13:11
Speaker 9: looking at expanding that service as it grows and as
13:14
Speaker 9: we see more people will adopt it. Right now, that
13:18
Speaker 9: won't be helpful for them. I hope in the future
13:20
Speaker 9: I can come on the show and say we get.
13:22
Speaker 3: That we get more riders on it than executed services
13:25
Speaker 3: exact services. Go back to the maintenance facility again, what's
13:28
Speaker 3: our timetable on that? Repeat that four seconds?
13:30
Speaker 7: So our timetable for that. We just received the grant.
13:32
Speaker 9: We are at thirty percent design, so we need to
13:34
Speaker 9: get to one hundred before we can build anything. That's
13:35
Speaker 9: probably going to take the majority of twenty twenty six
13:38
Speaker 9: that we'll be working with our architecture and engineering firm
13:40
Speaker 9: making sure we have our plans solidified, and then construction
13:43
Speaker 9: can start, hopefully late twenty twenty six.
13:46
Speaker 3: All right, Okay, I have another quote. You're a popular guy.
13:49
Speaker 3: What happens to old buses that can no longer be used?
13:52
Speaker 3: Could you repurpose them to help out the animal shelter.
13:55
Speaker 7: Yeah, so we've had.
13:56
Speaker 9: A couple of creative uses of our former buses. Neil
14:00
Speaker 9: at the United Way is converting one of our former
14:02
Speaker 9: smaller vans into a mobile grocery store for for up
14:05
Speaker 9: in Clay County. We have donated a small bus to
14:09
Speaker 9: the South Charleston r OTC. We also we put some
14:12
Speaker 9: of our vehicles just on GOV deals. It's if you
14:14
Speaker 9: purchase anything with federal funds, that's the way you if
14:17
Speaker 9: you're going to sell it, and we make pennies on
14:19
Speaker 9: the dollar. But but yeah, we are open to ideas.
14:23
Speaker 9: If people have something creative they want to do, we're
14:26
Speaker 9: open to working with them, especially if it gives back.
14:28
Speaker 7: To the community. That's what's important to us.
14:31
Speaker 9: We get a lot of requests, but if it's just
14:32
Speaker 9: a drive around or turn into an r V or something,
14:34
Speaker 9: you know, we're not as into that.
14:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, but something will help out a community and that's
14:37
Speaker 3: something maybe you could look at for the future. I'm
14:39
Speaker 3: sure that hoolks with animal shelter would love to have
14:41
Speaker 3: that conversation with you. It's also dogs. Yeah, yes, I'm
14:47
Speaker 3: all I'd rather have that than people on the bus anyway,
14:49
Speaker 3: But that's just me because I'm weird that way.
14:50
Speaker 7: Well, there you go, start a dog bus and just
14:53
Speaker 7: for dat.
14:54
Speaker 3: I love it all right, Sean from k R T
14:57
Speaker 3: and Zach. First of all, I appreciate you both, appreciate
15:00
Speaker 3: you sharing your time today too. Thanks. It was all
15:02
Speaker 3: by the time man, he learned all off. That's all right.
15:05
Speaker 3: That's we have all these fancy buttons in here, and
15:07
Speaker 3: it happens more often than you would think.
15:08
Speaker 7: I'm used to danger.
15:09
Speaker 3: I'm not the one.
15:10
Speaker 2: You know.
15:10
Speaker 3: You can actually control your own microphones over there, which
15:13
Speaker 3: you just proved so I did. So there you go.

Speaker 3: WVRC media promotion. We'll talk to the mayor, Clinton and
18:13
Speaker 3: k Summers coming up a little bit later on. They
18:15
Speaker 3: got big happenings Saturday. And speaking of big happenings here
18:17
Speaker 3: in the Capital City, Friday and Saturday, Championship Day, as
18:21
Speaker 3: we'll be crowning some state football champions Class Quade Friday
18:25

18:27

18:30
Speaker 3: A matchup between Bluefield and Frankfort, and then at seven
18:33
Speaker 3: o'clock in the game with lots of local interest here
18:35
Speaker 3: in the Kanawh Valley Class Triple A, it is Nitro
18:39
Speaker 3: and Princeton. Tim Brady with Charleston CVB. He's been a
18:43
Speaker 3: busy guy and he joins us right now. Welcome to show, Tim,
18:46
Speaker 3: Thanks for having me, Dave, always a pleasure to be here.
18:47
Speaker 3: Thank you. There's you and I are talking off air
18:50
Speaker 3: man there's a lot of big happenings in and around
18:52
Speaker 3: the championships, and we'll we'll get to that a little
18:55
Speaker 3: bit later on. But the thing I want people to
18:57
Speaker 3: remember is that when a city hosts championships, whether it
19:01
Speaker 3: was here, Wheeleen, where it was before, or wherever, there's
19:04
Speaker 3: a lot more than just the game that goes on.
19:06
Speaker 3: You see upticks in restaurants and hotels and things of
19:10
Speaker 3: that nature. So let's get to that first.
19:12
Speaker 12: Yeah, I think that, and that's sort of the idea behind,
19:17
Speaker 12: you know, making the pitch to host these big events,
19:19
Speaker 12: because it does drive business throughout the city in places
19:22
Speaker 12: other than just you know, Ladley Field. For the example
19:25
Speaker 12: of the state high school football championships. I was telling
19:28
Speaker 12: you before we got on the air last year, the afternoon,
19:31
Speaker 12: the Saturday afternoon of the Triple A game Bridgeport versus
19:35
Speaker 12: Herbert Hoover last year was that night was the highest
19:39
Speaker 12: night of attendance at light the night at Gomart Ballpark.
19:42
Speaker 12: It was also the busiest day of the holiday season
19:45
Speaker 12: at Capitol Market last year, and anecdotally we saw a
19:50
Speaker 12: lot of Bridgeport and Hoover gear at those locations. So
19:54
Speaker 12: that tells you that people are coming into town for
19:55
Speaker 12: the football game. But you know, like that Saturday noon game,
19:58
Speaker 12: it's over by three. You've got the rest of the
20:01
Speaker 12: day to explore Charleston. And it's such a vibrant place.
20:04
Speaker 12: During the holidays, there's so much happening with Gomart Ballpark,
20:07
Speaker 12: the light the night at Gomart Ballpark, and holiday happenings
20:10
Speaker 12: at Capitol Market and Holly Jolly Brawley in the all
20:13
Speaker 12: the lights and trees in Slack Plaza and through Bradley Walkway,
20:16
Speaker 12: and you know, the city is just such a festive place.
20:20
Speaker 3: So hosting these.
20:21
Speaker 12: Events brings people in that you know, they have the
20:23
Speaker 12: time to go and do those things.
20:24
Speaker 3: And if you look at I mean, I said this
20:26
Speaker 3: on the show yesterday, I think it's a good cross
20:28
Speaker 3: section of West Virginia. You know, we're happy to have
20:30
Speaker 3: Nitro in there, but let's face it, we don't want
20:33
Speaker 3: as well. On one hand, as locals, we'd like to
20:36
Speaker 3: have all local teams and there. That's just not going
20:37
Speaker 3: to happen. You know, we'd like to have as many
20:39
Speaker 3: as possible, but you've got people coming from Princeton, from Bluefield,
20:42
Speaker 3: from Frankfurt, from all those other wheeling those other places
20:45
Speaker 3: that I mentioned.
20:45
Speaker 12: Yeah, and it's it's actually a balance this year that's
20:47
Speaker 12: kind of nice and it doesn't put too much stress
20:50
Speaker 12: on our hotel community because don't forget, we're also hosting
20:54
Speaker 12: a pretty big Division one basketball game. Yeah, there's that
20:57
Speaker 12: Saturday night, and I think they're busting at the seams
21:00
Speaker 12: at the Charleston Marriott Town Center over the weekend. But
21:03
Speaker 12: we have four teams that are staying in hotels, four
21:04
Speaker 12: teams that are not, you know, so yeah, it's bringing
21:08
Speaker 12: people from all over the state. But the thing about
21:10
Speaker 12: those local teams, they drive a lot of ticket sales.
21:14
Speaker 12: So we're happy to have Nitro, We're happy to have
21:16
Speaker 12: Chapmanville balance.
21:18
Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. Yeah, it's a great balance. Yeah, I
21:19
Speaker 3: want you want to have, like I said, a good
21:21
Speaker 3: balance of all because you know you but you also
21:25
Speaker 3: want people that are going because the statistics have proven,
21:28
Speaker 3: and you're in the tourism business that we people come
21:30
Speaker 3: to an area for an event, whether it's a concert
21:33
Speaker 3: or whatever the case may be, and they see something
21:36
Speaker 3: they like, they're likely to come back, even if they
21:39
Speaker 3: don't take it in that time. Yep, you know, they
21:41
Speaker 3: come in for a big event. Over the Connell Seem
21:42
Speaker 3: Convention Center or something like the football championships. They come
21:45
Speaker 3: in and they say, well, we didn't have time this time,
21:47
Speaker 3: but man, that restaurant looked really good. You know a
21:49
Speaker 3: lot of people were talking about that restaurant, They were
21:51
Speaker 3: talking about that coffee shop, talking about this this retail
21:53
Speaker 3: is that's right, We're going to come back.
21:54
Speaker 12: Yeah, that's right. That return visitation percentage for us is
21:58
Speaker 12: really high. We know, and you know, we do a
22:00
Speaker 12: lot of tracking. As you said, I am in the
22:02
Speaker 12: tourism business. Sometimes sometimes I run football games, sometimes I
22:07
Speaker 12: run bike races. But generally speaking, you know, we track
22:11
Speaker 12: a lot of data and we can tell if someone
22:13
Speaker 12: comes here and they have a good experience, they come back.
22:15
Speaker 12: I mean, we're we have a seventy plus percent return rate.
22:18
Speaker 12: So you know, it's these events drive business, not just
22:22
Speaker 12: this weekend, but I promise you that hosting these football
22:26
Speaker 12: championships this weekend will drive business later in the holiday season,
22:29
Speaker 12: or in the spring or in the summer. People will
22:31
Speaker 12: come here, they'll have a good time, and they'll come back.
22:33
Speaker 3: Talking to a game with Tam Brady from the Charleston

22:59
Speaker 3: Yesterday I had chief of staff of a Good one administration,
23:01
Speaker 3: Matt Sutton Studios. He was subbing for the mayor yesterday
23:04
Speaker 3: and we talked a little bit about what Charleston learned
23:07
Speaker 3: from one year to the next. It is a continual
23:11
Speaker 3: learning process. Everything went off as far as I know,
23:13
Speaker 3: without a hitch for your first year in a while
23:16
Speaker 3: of hosting it. But what is some takeaways from year
23:18
Speaker 3: one that you're going to take into year two.
23:19
Speaker 12: Well, it's funny and I could answer that question on
23:21
Speaker 12: a couple of different levels, but on a very micro level,
23:24
Speaker 12: here's one thing we learned. You know, when the championships
23:26
Speaker 12: were in Wheeling, the way the stadium is set up,
23:30
Speaker 12: the locker rooms exit right out directly onto the field.
23:34
Speaker 12: At Ladley Field the locker rooms. You entered the locker
23:36
Speaker 12: rooms from behind the stands, so you actually have to
23:38
Speaker 12: go through the public areas to get to and from
23:41
Speaker 12: the field. So we learned a lot about making sure
23:44
Speaker 12: we kept all of the right people on the field
23:47
Speaker 12: and not letting people get out on the field like
23:48
Speaker 12: walking out with you steal what I'm saying, Like people
23:51
Speaker 12: would just sort of mingle in with the team and
23:53
Speaker 12: the coaching staff and just sort of like forced gump
23:55
Speaker 12: their way out onto the out on Texas.
23:57
Speaker 3: Next thing, you know, you guys had seventy five years
23:59
Speaker 3: old a tight end. Yeah, that's that's exactly right.
24:02
Speaker 12: You know, somebody's grandma's got the clipboard down there in
24:04
Speaker 12: the coach's box. So little things like that that we
24:07
Speaker 12: didn't think about because you know, we hadn't had to
24:10
Speaker 12: think about it. So, you know, we learned little things
24:12
Speaker 12: like that. But on the big picture side, one of
24:14
Speaker 12: the things that we learned is that the teams really
24:17
Speaker 12: appreciate the hospitality that we extend to them. We have
24:21
Speaker 12: there are eight gentlemen who serve as team hosts. Every
24:25
Speaker 12: team when they come to Charleston has a person that
24:27
Speaker 12: is their local host, that is their point of contact
24:30
Speaker 12: for anything they need, you know, whether kid needs to
24:33
Speaker 12: go to an emergency dentist, or somebody needs contact solution,
24:37
Speaker 12: or you know, to and from the field, they're with them.
24:42
Speaker 12: We want to extend that hospitality because we want them
24:44
Speaker 12: to come here and not have to worry about anything
24:45
Speaker 12: but playing football. We also provide a meal to every team,
24:48
Speaker 12: and we work with local restaurants, locally owned restaurants to
24:51
Speaker 12: provide those meals to every team. So every team when
24:54
Speaker 12: they get to Charleston is going to come in on
24:56
Speaker 12: their bus, go to a restaurant, and have a nice
24:59
Speaker 12: sit down meet provided by us through a local restaurant.
25:03
Speaker 12: So we learned a lot about that hospitality and how
25:05
Speaker 12: important it is. We put all these plans together not
25:08
Speaker 12: knowing how it would be received. The teams loved it,
25:11
Speaker 12: and the teams appreciate the hospitality and they appreciate having
25:13
Speaker 12: that one person that is their point of contact, so
25:16
Speaker 12: the coaches don't have to worry about anything but coaching football.
25:18
Speaker 3: I was gonna say, I think the coaches would probably
25:20
Speaker 3: you know, appreciate as well, because at the end of
25:22
Speaker 3: the day, I mean, let's remember, you are dealing with
25:24
Speaker 3: fifteen through eighteen year old kids, yep, and things happen,
25:28
Speaker 3: as you said, emergency dentistry and things of that nature.
25:30
Speaker 3: And the coaches because they can just worry about the
25:32
Speaker 3: ex as and o's.
25:33
Speaker 12: And yeah, and they don't have to get on their
25:34
Speaker 12: phone and google where's the closest emergency dentist. They just
25:37
Speaker 12: call their team host, and the team host makes the arrangements,
25:40
Speaker 12: takes care of it, and and it's all sort of
25:43
Speaker 12: done without anyone's you know, having to.
25:46
Speaker 3: Lose focus on the game. How are the hosts chosen?
25:48
Speaker 3: I mean, do the people just volunteer?
25:50
Speaker 12: Yeah, we put together a volunteer committee last year, and
25:53
Speaker 12: you know, eight eight guys that have some prior experience
25:57
Speaker 12: either coaching or playing football, so they thinkerstand would be
25:59
Speaker 12: very import so they understand. And I would list them all,
26:02
Speaker 12: but I know I'll forget somebody, so I don't want
26:04
Speaker 12: to do that. But they're all former coaches or players
26:06
Speaker 12: who who understand, and a lot of them have either
26:09
Speaker 12: coached or played in state championship games, so they understand
26:11
Speaker 12: the magnitude of the moment, and you know the focus
26:14
Speaker 12: it takes to be in that arena, so they're happy
26:17
Speaker 12: to help and provide that sort of level of service
26:20
Speaker 12: to help their team. And you know, we found last
26:23
Speaker 12: year that the team hosts they developed personal relationships with
26:26
Speaker 12: the coaches and players and became invested in that. So
26:28
Speaker 12: they became just like an extra fan for that team
26:31
Speaker 12: on site. And it was really great experience and we
26:33
Speaker 12: got a lot of really positive feedback about that program
26:35
Speaker 12: that we put together. And I have to give a
26:37
Speaker 12: lot of credit on that to Mike Garbagast, who chairs
26:40
Speaker 12: our local host committee, former principal at South Charleston. Mike
26:45
Speaker 12: has put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into
26:47
Speaker 12: hosting this. I'm the guy that gets to sit here
26:49
Speaker 12: and talk about it on the radio, But Mike Garbagast
26:52
Speaker 12: does a lot of work on this, and he put
26:55
Speaker 12: that committee together sort of hand picked, and he picked
26:59
Speaker 12: just great guys. And and we have great tournament directors
27:02
Speaker 12: uh In him and and Bryce Casto and Jim Hamrick.
27:06
Speaker 12: You know, these guys, they love high school athletics, they
27:09
Speaker 12: love the sport of football, and and they have we
27:13
Speaker 12: have created a committee that you know, and I haven't
27:16
Speaker 12: even mentioned the Thursday Night Academic Awards back to the Maria,
27:19
Speaker 12: where we recognize not only athletic accomplishment, but academic accomplishment
27:24
Speaker 12: from athletes all over the state. So the committee that
27:27
Speaker 12: might put together, I think has done a really great
27:30
Speaker 12: job of coalescing and creating this really great event for
27:33
Speaker 12: the city of Charles.
27:34
Speaker 3: Let's talk about that academic ceremony. I mean, can you
27:37
Speaker 3: give us all the details on that. Yeah, So it's
27:39
Speaker 3: high school and middle school. It's both individual and team awards.
27:43
Speaker 3: It's selected by the S a C.
27:44
Speaker 12: But it's it's based on you know, grade point average obviously,
27:48
Speaker 12: but there's also a community uh involvement component to it.
27:52
Speaker 12: And uh so in individual uh individual sports and team sports.
27:57
Speaker 12: There are at the high school level eight scholarship winners.
28:00
Speaker 12: We fund a small scholarship where the individual award winners
28:05
Speaker 12: will receive from the Charleston CVB a scholarship uh to
28:10
Speaker 12: you know, for them to use in their their postgraduate
28:12
Speaker 12: post high school education. Yeah, it's and it's it's it's
28:17
Speaker 12: what high school athletics should be about. You know, certainly
28:20
Speaker 12: everybody buys the tickets for the games, and everybody wants
28:22
Speaker 12: to see the kids compete on the field, but these
28:24
Speaker 12: kids are excelling in the classroom too, So we want
28:26
Speaker 12: to make sure that we recognize that and and honor
28:29
Speaker 12: them and and encourage them to continue achieving at that
28:33
Speaker 12: high level.
28:34
Speaker 3: Talking again with Tim Brady from the Charleston cv B
28:36
Speaker 3: to Dave Allen Show on five eighty line brought to
28:38
Speaker 3: you part by Morgan to Morgan. If you're interured, hire
28:40
Speaker 3: Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. And what
28:43
Speaker 3: did the city get out of this last year? I mean,
28:45
Speaker 3: let's talk let's talk numbers here. Yeah, So I'm gonna
28:49
Speaker 3: answer that question two ways. One, I'm gonna say the
28:51
Speaker 3: city invested in this to begin with, and and none
28:55
Speaker 3: of this happens without the full support of Mayor Goodwin
28:58
Speaker 3: and her staff and the City Department's Charleston Police are
29:02
Speaker 3: also a huge, huge asset and a huge help in
29:04
Speaker 3: producing these events. So the city invests in this event,
29:08
Speaker 3: and then what the city gets back.
29:09
Speaker 12: You know, last year we estimated around a four million
29:11
Speaker 12: dollar economic impact over the course of the three days
29:14
Speaker 12: counting the Thursday of the Academic Awards banquet through the
29:18
Speaker 12: end of the game, so the city invests, but then
29:20
Speaker 12: the city does see that benefit. And I talked, you know,
29:22
Speaker 12: anecdotally about the biggest day of light the night was
29:26
Speaker 12: the Saturday of the Football Championships, and we can draw
29:29
Speaker 12: some correlation there. We saw people out and about at
29:31
Speaker 12: Capital Market and downtown and other parts of the city.
29:35
Speaker 12: You know, we saw fans in gear and different restaurants,
29:37
Speaker 12: Like we have eyes on the street. We might be
29:39
Speaker 12: working at the football field producing the games, but we
29:42
Speaker 12: have people out and about that see fans in their
29:46
Speaker 12: team gear all all over the city. So you know,
29:48
Speaker 12: the economic benefit to the city is great. We talked
29:50
Speaker 12: about the return visitation, so it's really just an opportunity,
29:54
Speaker 12: you know, not only for us to reap that economic
29:56
Speaker 12: impact the weekend of the event, but then setting us
29:59
Speaker 12: up in the future for turn visitation and just continuing
30:02
Speaker 12: to organically grow travel and tourism in the Charleston area
30:06
Speaker 12: by producing these events and bringing people to town and
30:08
Speaker 12: showcasing this really vibrant city that we all love.
30:11
Speaker 3: And we hope that the players that come from the
30:15
Speaker 3: far away places, the blue fields of Princeton's, in the Wheelings, whatever,
30:18
Speaker 3: we hope that they will get an opportunity to take
30:20
Speaker 3: advantage of light the night and the tree one hundred
30:23
Speaker 3: and sixty four trees downtown and the other restaurants and
30:27
Speaker 3: so on and so forth. While they're here. We had
30:29
Speaker 3: actually had a text that said, would be cool for
30:32
Speaker 3: the city to collaborate with a few of these different
30:34
Speaker 3: escape rooms in the valley to create some holiday themed
30:36
Speaker 3: escape rooms and different locations around town. I know it's
30:39
Speaker 3: not something necessarily that you would be in charge of,
30:41
Speaker 3: but it is kind of a cool idea.
30:42
Speaker 12: Yeah, sure is. And there's a bunch of those things
30:44
Speaker 12: and they're super popular. They're not for me because I'm
30:46
Speaker 12: not that smart, but I'd still be there.
30:50
Speaker 3: I went in. Does anybody seem Brady has been gone
30:52
Speaker 3: for three days?
30:53
Speaker 12: He went to the escape room and he's not smart
30:54
Speaker 12: enough to get himself out.
30:55
Speaker 3: So good idea, though, that's a good idea. And we
30:59
Speaker 3: have the champion for how long?
31:01
Speaker 12: It's four years, so we're in year two of four years.
31:04
Speaker 3: Anything that fans and we'll talk about this wee get
31:06
Speaker 3: a little bit closer, But is there anything as far
31:09
Speaker 3: as you know that fans need to know before they
31:10
Speaker 3: go to the game about different policies or is that
31:12
Speaker 3: something that you take care of or yeah, I mean
31:14
Speaker 3: lately Field certainly has their facility policies. They're pretty standard
31:18
Speaker 3: for most stadiums have the same policies. I would say
31:23
Speaker 3: the number one thing that I would encourage people to
31:25
Speaker 3: do if they're coming to the game is get on
31:28
Speaker 3: the s SC website through go Fan and buy your
31:31
Speaker 3: tickets and have them on your phone in advance. You
31:33
Speaker 3: can buy tickets at the gate digitally, but it is
31:37
Speaker 3: so much easier and more efficient if you buy your
31:40
Speaker 3: tickets in advance and then we can just scan you
31:42
Speaker 3: and get you right in and you don't have to wait.
31:44
Speaker 3: So I would highly encourage people to buy their tickets
31:47
Speaker 3: before arriving. And the other thing I will say is
31:50
Speaker 3: I would prepare for some wet weather this weekend at
31:54
Speaker 3: Laidley Field. Yeah. Well, I mean we are in meteorological winter.
31:58
Speaker 3: As they say, it's my new favorite word, my new
32:00
Speaker 3: favorite term. It starts in December first. But I mean,
32:04
Speaker 3: and and we saw this morning. If you go talk
32:06
Speaker 3: to to Fred and Chris and these guys that have
32:09
Speaker 3: worked these tournaments of these not tournaments really, but these
32:11
Speaker 3: championships over the years, and wheeling they saw everything in
32:14
Speaker 3: Wheeling from I mean snowstorms to sleep to to you know,
32:17
Speaker 3: hot conditioned. They've seen it all.
32:19
Speaker 7: I was.
32:19
Speaker 12: I was the red hat for many years for the
32:22
Speaker 12: Super six in Wheeling, and I was on the field
32:25
Speaker 12: for snow and rain and mud prior to the turf.
32:28
Speaker 12: When the field flooded, it was it was a mud pit.
32:32
Speaker 7: You know.
32:32
Speaker 12: Yeah, this first week of December, you you can get
32:36
Speaker 12: just about any kind of weather.
32:37
Speaker 3: And looking ahead right now, the high temperature now and
32:40
Speaker 3: this is always subject to change. High temperature on Friday,
32:43
Speaker 3: it's gonna be about forty one overnight.
32:46
Speaker 2: You know.
32:46
Speaker 3: The late games probably be in the thirties. Forties would
32:48
Speaker 3: be the max. I think the high tempts. But that's
32:50
Speaker 3: it's the football championship weather. It's well, that's right, that's right.
32:53
Speaker 12: And don't listen to anything Fred says, because he's always
32:56
Speaker 12: nice and woman the press boxes. He's not out there
32:58
Speaker 12: with the he's not out there with the the rabble.
33:00
Speaker 3: He told me, he told me one time. He said, man,
33:03
Speaker 3: he said it was so bad. It was so bad
33:05
Speaker 3: on those kids out there. I had to pull down
33:07
Speaker 3: the shades in the press fox. But I didn't have
33:10
Speaker 3: to look at him again.
33:11
Speaker 12: He had to turn his foot warmer down because he
33:13
Speaker 12: was getting too hot.
33:15
Speaker 3: All right, another another text, Okay, for you ever thought
33:19
Speaker 3: about turning Ladleyfield Parking lot into a parking garage? That's again,
33:23
Speaker 3: that's really not something that you're well that in your purview.
33:25
Speaker 12: Certainly that facility is owned by the Kenaw County Board
33:28
Speaker 12: of Education, so that would be a question for doctor
33:31
Speaker 12: Paula Potter. Okay, imagine, go ahead and answer it now. Anyway,
33:35
Speaker 12: I've never thought about it. I've never thought about it.
33:37
Speaker 3: This is this is this is how we have fun
33:39
Speaker 3: because you just go, yeah, sure, let's do it. It's
33:42
Speaker 3: not my money, it's not my property. I think it's
33:43
Speaker 3: a great idea, Tim Brady. This is why we're not
33:46
Speaker 3: allowed to play together much. I appreciate you being here, man, man,
33:48
Speaker 3: thank you. It's twenty minutes away from ten. We're gonna
33:50
Speaker 3: go to Glendon and then talk to Mayor k Summers

43:22
Speaker 8: of an attraction right. Now and you, know we have
43:25
Speaker 8: different things outdoor activities for people and going to do.

43:33
Speaker 8: lots and lots of work and dedication and a lot
43:36
Speaker 8: of team effort from a lot of different.
43:38
Speaker 3: People mayor have? You have you got all the information

44:25
Speaker 8: word Her Reneuver High, school and you know we were in
44:27
Speaker 8: the playoffs and so everything was based On saturday on
44:31
Speaker 8: what are Her Hoover boys were going to? Do So
44:34
Speaker 8: Coach Joey fields looks at me and, says since you

44:39
Speaker 8: have a lot of faith In, yes we were going
44:43
Speaker 8: to do the Breakdown, layfield we were going to do the.
44:45
Speaker 10: TOWN i.
44:46
Speaker 3: DIDN'T i didn't even think about. That that's, uh that's. Sure,
44:49
Speaker 3: hey we had a quick text here that somebody wanted
44:51
Speaker 3: to ask And they were very nice in the way
44:53
Speaker 3: they asked. It they wanted to know if you could
44:55
Speaker 3: consider upgrading all the city street. Markers, uh even if
44:58
Speaker 3: you have to do a few at a, time because
44:59
Speaker 3: the they say that they they're sure that they're not.
45:01
Speaker 8: Cheap let me tell. YOU i will tell. You we
45:05
Speaker 8: do have new street markers. Already we've ordered them and
45:09
Speaker 8: we are trying to find somebody that can install them
45:13
Speaker 8: properly and the way they should be installed because they
45:16
Speaker 8: have to be dug and all. That so if that
45:18
Speaker 8: person is interested and know someone that we can GET
45:21
Speaker 8: i mean talking about professional. Volunteer but we do have the.
45:25
Speaker 8: Signs they're, beautiful they were very, expensive and we are
45:29
Speaker 8: working on. That so that is something we've had a little,
45:31
Speaker 8: bit all.
45:32
Speaker 3: Right so we'll let they ask that. Question should they
45:34
Speaker 3: just reach out to you at city hall or is
45:36
Speaker 3: that the best way to do?
45:37
Speaker 8: It that? Numbers that number is three or, four, five, four,
45:41
Speaker 8: eight four to one ninety. Two all, Right because we
45:45
Speaker 8: really have the. Signs they'll love. Them they're beautiful AND
