Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily and body here. You are listening to
- 0:23Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle. What is going on? I
- 0:28Speaker 1: had a really nice week. I was able to get
- 0:31Speaker 1: together with a group of girlfriends. I'm about to start
- 0:34Speaker 1: a string of work travel and so it is a
- 0:38Speaker 1: priority for me, knowing that I'm going to be giving
- 0:42Speaker 1: in the next few weeks, to figure out how I
- 0:45Speaker 1: can fill my cup up as much as possible.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And so I had a.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Group of girlfriends over earlier this week, and the only
- 0:52Speaker 1: rule before you came over was show up with your
- 0:56Speaker 1: favorite bottle of one and your favorite creator Joe's item.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And then I.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Booked a last minute weekend trip to go see one
- 1:08Speaker 1: of my dearest friends and her kids. Her daughter is
- 1:12Speaker 1: going to be turning one soon and I'm pretty positive
- 1:15Speaker 1: I'm going to be traveling when that happens, so I
- 1:19Speaker 1: knew that I wanted to make some time to get
- 1:20Speaker 1: up and see her and fill my cup before things
- 1:24Speaker 1: get really crazy. I've got La on deck, I've got
- 1:26Speaker 1: Paris on deck. I've got Boston on deck. I'm really
- 1:31Speaker 1: really looking forward to all of this, but they are
- 1:34Speaker 1: all work trips and they all require me to be
- 1:39Speaker 1: out of my regular routine in giving mode, on top
- 1:43Speaker 1: of my game, while still getting everything done that would
- 1:47Speaker 1: normally have to get done if I was home here
- 1:50Speaker 1: in Brooklyn, which means a little bit extra stress, But
- 1:54Speaker 1: as Glennon says, I can do hard things right. I
- 2:00Speaker 1: had a moment earlier today which is really what I
- 2:03Speaker 1: want to talk about for five minute Friday today. So
- 2:06Speaker 1: earlier today, a friend of mine is teaching a course
- 2:09Speaker 1: at lam College. It is a school in the heart
- 2:13Speaker 1: of New York City in Midtown, and it's essentially dedicated
- 2:17Speaker 1: exclusively to the business of fashion and lifestyle, but she
- 2:20Speaker 1: teaches a media class there and so she asked me
- 2:22Speaker 1: to come in and speak to her students about the
- 2:26Speaker 1: business of podcasting. And the last question she asked me
- 2:31Speaker 1: was the last question I asked often on the podcast,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and she said, what advice would you have shared with
- 2:38Speaker 1: yourself during the hurdle moment of you starting the show
- 2:43Speaker 1: being in a big period of life transition, knowing what
- 2:45Speaker 1: you know now, And that advice, as I said, is
- 2:51Speaker 1: truly you don't have to have it all figured out.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I'll be the first to tell you.
- 2:56Speaker 1: As a woman in my mid thirties living on her own,
- 3:00Speaker 1: unsure what's gonna happen with buying property or having kids, untethered,
- 3:05Speaker 1: et cetera. There are many people that make me feel
- 3:08Speaker 1: like I am doing something wrong with the life that
- 3:11Speaker 1: I have come into thus far, and man, that is just.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So not it.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Don't let anyone should you into the life that they
- 3:22Speaker 1: see for you. What is important is that you are
- 3:26Speaker 1: going after the things that make you feel some kind
- 3:29Speaker 1: of way, that excite you, that make you feel ignited
- 3:33Speaker 1: by your purpose and your passions, and that is entirely
- 3:37Speaker 1: what life is about.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Right, So gosh, I.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Remember being in my early twenties and feeling as though,
- 3:44Speaker 1: you know, you get to college and they make you
- 3:46Speaker 1: choose a major, and you're supposed to know exactly what
- 3:48Speaker 1: you want to do for the rest of your life.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And I'm gonna call bs right, because there is so
- 3:55Speaker 1: much that happens, so much transformative stuff.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Especially in your twenties.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, you are not the same person at
- 4:05Speaker 1: twenty two that you are at thirty four than you
- 4:08Speaker 1: are at forty four, and so on and so forth.
- 4:10Speaker 1: So embrace each stage of life for what it has
- 4:14Speaker 1: to offer you, and know that every single minute, whether
- 4:17Speaker 1: it feels good or not that it is all happening
- 4:21Speaker 1: for you.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Some days it's easier to believe that than others.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Right, it's easier to say to yourself, oh man, I
- 4:28Speaker 1: feel so confident in the decision that I just made.
- 4:32Speaker 1: There are going to be more times than not that
- 4:35Speaker 1: that is not the sentiment, And that's okay. I'm going
- 4:39Speaker 1: to give you a little spoiler here. Even the people
- 4:42Speaker 1: that you see on the socials that seem like they've
- 4:45Speaker 1: got it all together, I promise you no shade, but
- 4:50Speaker 1: they don't. Everyone is still just trying to do the
- 4:53Speaker 1: best they can with what they have. They're still trying
- 4:55Speaker 1: to figure it out. And so don't succumb to that pressure.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Do you do the best you can in this moment
- 5:03Speaker 1: right now and move forward with grace and the best
- 5:08Speaker 1: of your ability with a positive attitude. My prompt for
- 5:13Speaker 1: you this week, what do you want? What do you want?
- 5:19Speaker 1: It doesn't need to be like what do you want
- 5:21Speaker 1: over the next twenty years? What do you want right now?
- 5:23Speaker 1: And what is within your power to go after it?
- 5:28Speaker 1: You know, I know a few of those students are
- 5:30Speaker 1: listening to this, So thanks so much for giving me
- 5:32Speaker 1: your time today. You know the drill because I know
- 5:35Speaker 1: you've been listening for a second. Now let's get to
- 5:38Speaker 1: a listener question.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Hi, Emily, this is Casey in Chicago. I'm running the
- 5:43Speaker 3: LA Marathon with Team Hurdle, and my question for you
- 5:47Speaker 3: is what are your favorite ways to celebrate your accomplishments,
- 5:51Speaker 3: your wins, both big and small?
- 5:53Speaker 1: Casey, I am so excited to see you and all
- 5:57Speaker 1: of the Hurdlers that are going to be running LA
- 5:59Speaker 1: Marathon next weekend, not this weekend, next weekend on the
- 6:03Speaker 1: nineteenth in Los Angeles. I would say my favorite way
- 6:08Speaker 1: to celebrate my big and small wins, I love celebrating
- 6:11Speaker 1: with my people, so going out with them a few beers.
- 6:16Speaker 2: If it's a marathon, you know there's a burger on deck.
- 6:19Speaker 1: But most of all, I will say that regardless of
- 6:24Speaker 1: how I celebrate, I make sure that I take the
- 6:27Speaker 1: time to commemorate the accomplishment itself.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:31Speaker 1: It is so easy to get caught up in going
- 6:34Speaker 1: after your goals, getting one thing, checking it off the
- 6:38Speaker 1: to do list, off the bucket list, and then asking yourself, Okay,
- 6:41Speaker 1: what's next. So, whether it's a marathon or literally making
- 6:46Speaker 1: time to walk around the block during your work day,
- 6:49Speaker 1: big or small, do yourself a favor and just take
- 6:53Speaker 1: the time to recognize how awesome it is, how awesome
- 6:56Speaker 1: you are. Now, on a separate note, as much as
- 6:59Speaker 1: I like to go out with friends, usually when I
- 7:02Speaker 1: check something big off of my little bucket list of sorts,
- 7:06Speaker 1: something that I'm really celebrating, I make sure to take
- 7:09Speaker 1: myself out for a little solo date.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I love a solo date. I love to journal about
- 7:15Speaker 2: my feelings.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I literally just walked in from taking myself out to
- 7:19Speaker 1: dinner tonight. I got on Valentine's Day, sat down and
- 7:24Speaker 1: took myself out and wrote eight pages in my journal
- 7:28Speaker 1: about like where I was at, and there was just
- 7:30Speaker 1: nothing more enjoyable for me than taking time for me,
- 7:33Speaker 1: because that's self care for me. That's the ultimate way
- 7:38Speaker 1: to celebrate my wins.
- 7:41Speaker 2: That's it for now.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with Hurdle over on Socialists
- 7:45Speaker 1: at Hurdle Podcast. I am over at Emily a Body
- 7:48Speaker 1: another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
