- speaker-0: He does not intend for me to speaker-1: Clyde or Clive, it's Curry. Clive Barker is the guy who did Hellraiser. He did Hellraiser. I keep saying that I meant Curry. speaker-0: Curry. Yeah, I was wondering I like man, I don't remember him being part of speaker-1: There's relation by the way. Yeah. But ⁓ yeah, Clive Barker is the Hellraiser guy. Curry is I'm gonna put a disclaimer at the beginning. speaker-0: You might have to put up a display. speaker-1: Hey, welcome in Average Home Theater. I'm Nelson. speaker-0: Hey, what's up everybody? It's producer Nick. speaker-1: Producing Nick and we're finally gonna ⁓ we're finally gonna talk about it. We're gonna talk about obsession. speaker-0: Back in the average home theater. Nice to to be back in here and not doing the remote. And yeah, we've been talking about doing this one for for a little while since you saw it. speaker-1: Yeah. And I know it's been done a hundred, maybe even more times on YouTube, but we're gonna talk about it. So it'll be a little it'll be a more in-depth, you know, it's gonna be spoiler filled. So we're assuming if you're watching this, you've watched the movie. We just kinda wanna analyze it. We both rewatched it again and I wanna see if there's things that I missed or if maybe there's things that you missed. So this movie came out, you know, months ago actually. And I Sometimes I don't like the hype train because some you know, a lot of a lot of things get blown up. And ⁓ there's a guy I follow, he's a fellow YouTuber, his name is Brandon Tabato, and he has a a YouTube channel called Tobato Vision, and he brought up an interesting thing on Facebook actually, and he said that he is refusing basically to watch Obsession because he fell for the hype of the movie X. And I completely agree with him because I've told you this, I found that X was vastly overrated. speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: Right, it's not a a a bad movie. It's just to me, it's another run of the mill horror movie. It's nothing special. I don't I speaker-0: I think and when I watched it I really enjoyed it. I I wasn't aware of the hype surrounding it, but when I watched it it was years after it came speaker-1: And it like, ⁓ it's reinventing horror and it's the greatest thing ever. I'm like, it's a horror. Yeah, it it was really blown out of proportion. So anyway, so he's kind of refusing to watch this movie because he was like, I got burned on X, so I'm not gonna watch I'm not gonna watch Obsession. And I get it. ⁓ and and I told him that. I was like, Look, I agree with you on X, ⁓ but this movie is great. speaker-0: I don't remember any of that. Yeah. ⁓ So speaker-1: And I was kind of in the same boat. Like I didn't go watch this in the theater because I was like speaker-0: I watched it after you watch and I remember you saying specifically that like you told me maybe not to buy it because you didn't know if I would like it. And I d I didn't I stayed away from shorts and clips and reviews and and and all that stuff. I didn't know anything about what it was about. And I ended up just getting it. So I watched it twice. I watched it after you watched it. And I watched it twice in the last couple of days. Like over the span of like two or three days, I watched it a couple of times. speaker-1: I didn't know if you'd like it as much. speaker-0: I liked it. I really, really liked it. But it's got problems. Okay. That I would like to that I maybe it's just me. So that's that's what we're here to talk about. Okay. Like I'll give you my impressions and and we'll bounce off each other and maybe I'm off base. But make no mistake, I really, really liked it. And I will be watching it. Like it's gonna be a regular rotation. ⁓ yeah, yeah. I'll be watching it over and over again. speaker-1: See, I wasn't sure if it would be a regular rotation for me, but after watching it the second time, yeah, I was like, Man, this is so good. Yeah. I just I just really enjoy it. Now, so one of the things is the people who don't like it or the people who are just like, This is overrated is because of the plot, the whole love potion type thing. It's been done several times. Yeah. Right. This is nothing new. speaker-0: It really is. It it doesn't reinvent the wheel. speaker-1: It doesn't reinvent the wheel. And that episode that Jamie Ray and I did on the Tales from the Crypt with I can't think of their name. From ⁓ Weekend at Bernie's. ⁓ anyway. No, not not Silverman. The guy that's with him. Anyway. I can't anytime I'm on the spot I get bad with names. Ariel Hemingway is the girl, and ⁓ the guy is is from ⁓ Weekend at Bernie's. speaker-0: I can't help Not silver. Yeah. Yeah. If you all watched the last episode y'all know I've never seen Weekend at Bernie's. speaker-1: Which is Andrew McCarthy. It just hit me. He gets a ⁓ a love potion because he's infatuated with his neighbor who is Mario Hemingway and she falls in love with him and she's obsessed basically until they both die. Right. So this has been done before. But what is very original about it is the things that she does. It was so unexpected, and you just never know. speaker-0: So from Lee. Yeah. speaker-1: What the hell she's gonna do next? speaker-0: And that's what that's what I love. First of all, it's the Indy Navaret. Is that her show? Her movie? Indie Neveret? It's it's her movie. Yeah. it would not have been as good without her performance. Without her performance. I can imagine Hollywood is going to be beating down her door trying to get her in everything that comes out for the next couple of years. Phenomenal. speaker-1: Indy is her name. I hope she doesn't I I hope for her that she gets ⁓ diverse roles, that she doesn't just get offered horror movies because you know, they people can get typecast really easy. speaker-0: Yeah, I don't I'd like to see her in different things, but for I mean, this is in her wheelhouse apparently. ⁓ Yeah, she was she was fantastic. yeah. Loved her loved her performance. ⁓ we were just talking about how a lot of the things she did, a lot of the facial expressions and the movements she didn't share with the director, she didn't share with the other actor. So everything was kind of fresh and they were seeing it for the first time. ⁓ speaker-1: She'll be remembered forever. speaker-0: doesn't sound like they did a lot of takes of anything. Like she nailed things, you know, first, second take, third take, whatever. ⁓ yeah, can't can't say enough about this this young lady. She was she was awesome. speaker-1: So you want to get into the movie? speaker-0: Yeah, let's let's get into it. ⁓ we're talking about plot wise or what we liked, what we didn't like. speaker-1: Well let's let's start with the plot. ⁓ ever well everybody knows the plot. Yeah. He ⁓ he's infatuated with her. Yeah, he's a wuss. speaker-0: And he's and he's kind of a weenie. Yes. I didn't I didn't like his character. speaker-1: Yeah, he has multiple opportunities. She even tells him, Do you like speaker-0: Do you like tell me now. Now's the time to tell me. speaker-1: So he bear is his name, Baron. So he doesn't have the gumption to just tell her how he feels. Yes, I do like you. Had he done that, this whole relationship would have maybe gone somewhere. speaker-0: It kind of seemed like it could have been it could have been mutual. ⁓ and he's he's running out of time because they work together and she's she's resigning from the job. ⁓ they work with a friend and her dad owns a music store. They all work together. This is a group of four friends. Andy Richter is the is the dad. so off off the bat. speaker-1: She's resigning. And be ready. speaker-0: Story wise to me, I'm not an expert, it felt like this guy's first movie. So the cat thing, okay? So this the story goes, the guy his cat dies. speaker-1: I still don't know how the cat got into the medicine. speaker-0: The cat apparently gets into the trash can with a closed, secured, childproof medicine medicine bottle, gets into the medicine and dies. That felt to me like so that creates the opportunity for her to do some crazy shit later. Yeah. She creates like a memorial with the dead cat and then she later cooks the damn thing and makes a sandwich out of it. It sounds like something like he had to throw that in there to get her to do some be able to do some crazy stuff later. speaker-1: He have come up with a better way for the cat to die, but I think he also wanted He needed a way for Baron at the end to try and kill himself and knowing that the cat OD'd on it, well I'm gonna I'm gonna kill myself. It was definitely I'm and I think everybody that's watched this movie is like, how the hell did Kat get the medicine? speaker-0: And even even further than that, he stuck the dead cat in the bag and just left it in his house? Like how did she get access to the cat? speaker-1: I'm I assume that he buried it and she went and got it. speaker-0: She went and got it. Yeah. See, that was that was like a little a little hole for me. Like my my thinking was how the hell did you speaker-1: You mean there's a plot hole in a movie about someone making a wish and ⁓ speaker-0: But I'm just saying. Okay, so a bigger problem for me, a bigger problem for me, something that I had to work to get past and I'm fine with it now. They're on the phone, they're talking, they're on the phone. He's trying to work up the courage to kind of tell her how he feels, whatever. She's talking to him. She loses a crystal necklace. Yeah. And he he has this great idea, great, thoughtful, nice idea. I'm gonna go and get her a present. I'm gonna replace her crystal necklace. He goes to this shop or whatever, he's looking at the crystal necklaces. This again, nice, thoughtful idea. This could be the segue into telling her how I feel. No, I'm not gonna get a crystal necklace. Instead, I'm gonna get this novelty thing that you break a stick and make a wish. That I had a huge problem. No, no, no. I mean I'm I understand that. I understand that. But why would he not stick why why did he not stick with the original idea of getting a crystal necklace? He's standing there with a display of crystal necklaces. speaker-1: But he didn't think it was real. The idea is he's an idiot. He makes stupid decisions because he's just not he just yeah. I don't know, he's he's very awkward, he's dumb. and I guess maybe you're supposed to accept that that he's and he he thought it was cheesy. Like yeah, it would be cheesy for me to get her this. I don't want to maybe seem like I'm coming on too strong. So I'll get her this little novelty item. It's kind of funny. Yeah. Make her it's it's speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: You know what I'm saying? speaker-0: I understand and accept that cell that that explanation. I I really do. But when I when I watched it I was like, dude, why would you I don't know. I I had an issue with it. I get it. I understand. speaker-1: And you know, it's something being stuck in the friend zone. I've been in the friend zone and it's very it's very difficult. ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah. ⁓ Yeah. And like yeah, I guess like you say, you don't wanna he didn't want to seem speaker-1: 'Cause if I if I get her this thing she's gonna be like, ⁓ that's cheesy, why would you give me that? She probably wouldn't have, but he's so afraid of looking stupid. speaker-0: And I I guess that is a g a better way to look at it. He it it says more about his his security timidness and and all that. So okay. That's why we're here to bounce these things off each other you can kind of a different perspective. speaker-1: So he got her something that he thought would be fun and whatever to cheer her up type of thing. speaker-0: Yeah. Okay. I accept that. I accept that. I'll the next time I watch it, I'll watch it in in a new light. so yeah, that was I mean the the music in the movie. Can we talk about the music? Sure. ⁓ the music was great. It was very kind of atmosf it reminded me of Silent Hill. Okay I don't know if you ever played the original Silent Hill games The r the some of the music reminded me just that kind of atmospheric kind of not even really music, just kind of sounds, you know. I really enjoyed the music. And like you said a little earlier, ⁓ you never knew what she was gonna do. Like there were it was it was scary without relying on jump scares. It wasn't cheap, and a lot of it was when I I guess we're kinda supposed to be going through the the plot, but there's the scene where they're at the party. And she goes and stands behind the girl. I didn't know what she was gonna do. speaker-1: She stands there for like a second and yeah. What's her name? Her name is Sarah, is that right? speaker-0: Sarah. Sarah, because Sam was the cat. In a room full of people, a room full of their friends. Yeah. And no one knows what she's gonna do. So things ⁓ th those are the things that pulled me in, ⁓ again, scary without being speaker-1: Somebody told me when they watched this in the theater that it was one of the loudest movies they've ever seen. But I didn't find it it wasn't mixed very loud on the four K. Yeah. ⁓ now it didn't sound bad by any means, but it just sounded, you know, like an average movie to me. I I kinda cranked it a little bit and it had some decent bass response in it. Yeah. But ⁓ you know, overall it it sounds pretty good. speaker-0: Yeah. Yeah, I didn't the sound I didn't have any issues with some of the we can talk about some of the ⁓ the visual stuff ⁓ yeah later. But so yeah, ⁓ he he gets the one Wish Willow. He wishes for her to love her love him more than anyone else in the world and it starts immediately immediately. And what it is is so the first time I watched it, I didn't really kind of catch on, I guess, to it's like something possessing her. And she's still stuck in there. speaker-1: She's a next one. speaker-0: But this thing is kinda slowly taking her over, ⁓ which explains the scene when she's in the bed and she's kinda sleeping, but she's still she's lucid, she's herself, but she's asleep. And she's saying, Kill me, kill me like she's suffering and the same thing kinda happens at the party. speaker-1: Well, at the very beginning, when he when she first walks up to him and it's the very awkward conversation at the car, at one point she goes, Wait, what? Huh? speaker-0: Yeah, she's she's losing it. She's losing herself and and this thing is taking over. speaker-1: Yeah, so I did a couple of a couple of ⁓ the first time. I caught ⁓ more on the second time. speaker-0: Yeah, it it took me a couple of years to to catch up. speaker-1: Yeah, when she was sleeping, she says, ⁓ stay or something like that and just kill me. Mm-hmm. ⁓ he says 'Course he's so at this point he's so at this point in the movie he's like so speaker-0: Yeah, he's pretty traumatized by that. speaker-1: Right, but he really no matter what, he still wants the wish to be true. He still wants her and he says, Well what's so wrong with being with me? Yeah. And she says, I've never been with you So she's like trying to tell speaker-0: Yeah, so That's when he realizes exactly what's going on. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he's he was a he was a d and you know at first I didn't like him at all. And I didn't like the actor. I didn't think he did a good job, but again, once I watched it again, I was like, Well he's playing it. Yeah, he's playing it like he's supposed to play speaker-1: But he still doesn't want to change it. No he did it. Supposed to play you you know, you're supposed to sympathize with him at first. ⁓ of course when he breaks the wish, he doesn't really think it's gonna work. Right. So you can't like blame him for doing something at first. Yeah. You can't really say he's a turd because I mean a guy who has who says he's never wished for a girl to like him, you're probably lying. Right. Okay. ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah, who's who thinks? speaker-1: We've all done it at some point in our lives, whether we were teenagers or whatever. ⁓ so you can't really blame him for that. Yeah. But once he kind of realizes what's going on, and when he makes the phone call, hotline, there's some things. It's like, can I alter it? And even though he couldn't, just the mere fact that he even tried, because it's Clive Barker on the phone, but he says, So you want to alter it? Yeah. Well speaker-0: Yeah. We don't do that. speaker-1: You are you saying you want to cancel it? Yes. Well we don't do that either. speaker-0: But he gave him an out. He said, Well you can have someone else reverse the wish. speaker-1: No no he tells him he I think No no no, that's the guy, the store owner or the store clerk speaker-0: But he someone gave him a solution. Yeah. And he and he he tried, but the other guy the guy which was is what most people would do, wish for a billion dollars instead and a billion dollars fell out of his ceiling. Which I thought was yeah hilarious. I thought that was pretty funny, 'cause that's who wouldn't first wish for all kind of damn money. speaker-1: But so backing up a little bit, let's get into the creepy parts where you start you're like, Holy crap mm hmm. The first night where he's they're making out and she she goes, What what? And she falls out of the bed. That may be speaker-0: Yeah. So she's still fighting with her with is is it her or is it the the speaker-1: But I didn't catch that the first time. I'm like, what the hell is she? speaker-0: Why did she do that? Yeah. speaker-1: ⁓ it didn't dawn on me until later in the movie, ⁓ she's she's in there. Yeah. ⁓ that was great. Whenever she is in the corner, when he woke up, I was like she's she's in there. She's in there. Before she said anything, I knew she was in there. So speaker-0: Yeah, that was that was really neat. She's just standing standing in the corner. that's a lot of backtracking a little bit. You gotta pay attention because there's a lot of things like he's sitting in his living room on the phone and she's standing in the window watching him and you don't realize until she moves. You see the shadow. Yeah. That's something that I had looked down for a second and looked up and like, wait, something something happened. And I had to rewind it a little bit speaker-1: When he's in the store talking to his friend and she's in the background staring at him. speaker-0: Not she was never in focus. That entire shot, that entire scene, she was never in focus. But you can see she's just standing there. speaker-1: And he's like, is she looking at me? He's like, Uh-huh. Well laugh. Go ahead and laugh. speaker-0: Laughed like I said something funny. ⁓ yeah. So yeah, when she's standing in the corner and you don't Okay, so the the visuals of the four K might be a good time to bring this up. I didn't see her and the speaker-1: It's the H D R. It's not the four K. It's not it's the H D R. speaker-0: It's dark and things seem to get washed out. It's like hazy kinda. But I think I don't know the industry term for speaker-1: That is how Clive Barker wanted it. Right. He wanted it to where when she's in the corner, you can't see her. Right. Whenever he's talking to her and she's at the front door in that red dress and you barely you just see her eyes and they did hit her makeup and all that. speaker-0: Some of that stuff I I I definitely got and it it that was definitely intended. But it sometimes the the blacks and the the darkness seem they had to do that kind of soft. speaker-1: Had and and that's why I'm bringing up I put in the Blu-ray after I finished watching it. I said, Let me see what it looks like without the high dynamic range. Regular Blu-ray. You see her clear as day hiding in the corner. speaker-0: Yeah. Really? Yes. I'm gonna ha when I watch it again I'm gonna watch the blue ray. speaker-1: See her whole face when she's talking to him outside, when she's instead of just seeing like her eyes kinda shimmer and speaker-0: It almost looked like a CGI effect, but it was just light. speaker-1: It just lighting and makeup. So if they didn't use HDR, you don't are if you don't watch it on four K with the HDR, you're not getting the full effect of the movie. Right. This is one of the few movies that I will say you have to watch it in four K H D R to get the actual intended effect. Because if you watch the Blu ray, you just see everything. speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: It doesn't have the same effect. But at the same time, the blacks look washed out. So the blacks look better on the Blu-ray. Yet you can see it's it's very it's kind of opposite the way it's supposed to work. speaker-0: Okay. Yeah, you gotta pick which one you wanna watch. speaker-1: You're supposed to get better blacks with HDR, but you don't in this movie. Yeah. You get it's it's hazy looking. The daytime are which are very few scenes, the daytime scenes look great, but those nighttime scenes don't really especially because the movie's shot in it's a one to three, three aspect ratio, which is not quite four by three, but it's close. So your black bars are on the side. Right. And because of that, the blacks not being black show a lot more because your black bars are black. Yeah. So it's a very interesting looking movie, but you don't get the intended effect if you watch the Blu-ray. So people who say, ⁓ the Blu-ray is just as good. Not in this case. Yeah. In this case, you kind of have to watch it in the 4K to get the actual effect. speaker-0: Yeah, it's contrasting with the Well I'm gonna So I need you and y'all 'cause I don't usually notice stuff like this. I need y'all to be proud of me that I noticed this enough to bring it up in the video. Good job. Because ⁓ yeah, I was like, something you know and I I speaker-1: Yeah, producer. Did it on purpose for this. I watched those two scenes and I watched one other one. But it was there's if you watch the Blu-ray, you're not gonna get the full effect. You're just not gonna get it's it's it looks almost too good if that makes sense. speaker-0: Okay. I'm gonna I think I might put it on today just to just to watch it. speaker-1: I'm telling when she's in the corner, you see her like, ⁓ there she is. speaker-0: Yeah. And ⁓ in you that's probably not what was what was she's there the whole time and you can she can hear her, you can tell she's in the room, the voice and you can tell where she's coming from. Yeah. ⁓ You're so cute when you sleep. Yeah, and then with the flowers. speaker-1: Not attended. funniest part is when he tries to go back he tries he's like okay he tries to lay down as if what it's just gonna go and then she starts screaming. Mm-hmm. speaker-0: Away. And then she gets in bed next to him again and he tries to tries to inch out of Yay. Okay. Yeah. No, I'm not going anywhere. ⁓ so yeah, that's when he r starts to realize maybe something speaker-1: Yeah, because he wakes up the next morning and that is the cat memorial. He tells her you can't do that. This is effed up, whatever. So she's like, Okay. So he's leaving for work. She doesn't have to work that day. And so they're talking for two or three minutes. Then he turns around and the door is taped shut. speaker-0: The Cat Memorial. Taped with duct tape and foil and speaker-1: For some reason that freaks me out. It's so creepy. speaker-0: Yeah. And the way it's shot, like he turns around and sees it, but you don't know what he sees yet. And they kinda zoom in slowly on him and then you see, ⁓ well, she's trapped me. She's trapped him in the speaker-1: Or try to. And then when he's trying to open the door, she's like, Well, if you can't get the door open, you can stay. He's No, I got it. speaker-0: ⁓ it's it's good. He struggles with it for a couple of minutes. yeah. And another one of those things where what the hell is going on? Not a jump scare, not a whatever. speaker-1: There's really only one jump scare in the movie and that's the the head break the the window breaking part. speaker-0: Yeah. And a couple of things where things kinda happen subtly suddenly, but yeah, that's really the only like you don't see that coming out of anywhere. so yeah, he ⁓ he goes to work and doesn't she just sit there all day? She stands there. That's when she does the the smile, and then he leaves and then she stands there and she starts peeing on herself. And then when he gets back later, the rug is full of like speaker-1: Yes, that's what she does like a dog. Fira. speaker-0: vomit MP and feces and she says, Well I've just been waiting for you all speaker-1: So in the meantime he had made that's when he made the phone call and you he ⁓ the guy goes, So do you wanna talk to her? And then when she comes up you hear her screaming. speaker-0: Which is something I didn't understand. Like how was she on the phone with the customer service guy? speaker-1: It's not really the she's on the phone. He's just able to let him hear what's going on inside. Yeah. Like I think that was the real that was the real Nikki screaming on the inside. Trying to get out. Yes, trying to get out. It's just a freaky moment, you know. I don't think there's any real explanation for it other than I can let you hear what she really sounds like. speaker-0: Okay. Yeah, I think Yeah, I I figured it was something supernatural. That I didn't really get hung up on that. that also brings me to my my next and kind of last gripe. It's it's confusing how much time passes because there's a montage of them going on dates and playing music and having dinner and doing all this. Right. And it they it it almost it they almost make it seem like it's a while, like it's weeks, months, but then you find out later, yeah, it's only been a few days. Yes. speaker-1: I really only think it's a couple of days. speaker-0: ⁓ so that's something that not a big nitpick, but that was they showed something the passage of time, but there was really no a lot of speaker-1: Yeah, I think it's really only like two or three days. It's it's not supposed to be a long time. They just want you to get a little comfortable thinking that ⁓ everything's gonna be okay. It's and then it's not. speaker-0: That was that was my last one. ⁓ yeah, that's that's kind of my last little nitpick. ⁓ so yeah, that's he leaves her, she sits stands there defecating on herself, waiting for him. But that's when he goes to the store with Sarah, and then you kinda realize that Sarah has a little maybe a little thing for him and she's trying to warn him a little bit, and then yeah. speaker-1: Lunch. ⁓ no, he already had that. That that was before. That was before he made the phone call and everything. ⁓ she had packed him the lunch right before he he walked out of the tape door. Right. So that already happened with Sarah, where he threw up in the in the lunch box in the ⁓ trash can after eating the cat and stuff. That w talking about that, the first time I watched it, I didn't get the Polaroid that said not me. For some reason it went completely over my head the first time. speaker-0: Yeah, that's right. That already. Yeah. Explain 'cause I'm I'm still not sure if I speaker-1: It's the real Nikki saying this is not me. Yeah. She said it's the first one said you and the second one said not me, which was her. So that was the real Nikki saying, This isn't me type of thing. ⁓ speaker-0: ⁓ yeah, that makes sense. The second he opened that lunchbox pulled out that sandwich I I I I promise you the first thing that came out of my mouth was she put the cat in that sandwich. He's eating he's eating Sam. And yeah. And he throws up and it was disgusting. speaker-1: I didn't think it was the cat but I knew something was She could Yeah. It's a joke. It's a joke. Yeah. 'Cause she's like my food critic cat and dude my heart sank just like his obviously did in the ⁓ in the movie. speaker-0: He ate he ate his cat unintentionally. and then ⁓ probably my favorite scene, the they go to that party. ⁓ he's kind of on the outs with Ian, his friend Ian, that they work together, whatever, and he finds out about this party that Ian's throwing that he wasn't invited to, and Ian basically tells him, Well, you can come, but Nikki can't come and then Nikki finds out about it and of course ends up going. That was probably my my favorite part. speaker-1: She was in the shower and he said I'm I'm gonna go and she just starts like screaming speaker-0: Dreaming and breaking things and Yeah. ⁓ so they end up going together and they're playing like kind of a like a Jenga drinking game. Yeah. speaker-1: Almost like a Jenga truth or dare or spin the bottle. speaker-0: Yeah. She gives this monologue, the story that she wrote about this incestuous Hansel and Gretel version of Hansel and Gretel and it's speaker-1: Now did the real Nikki write that? speaker-0: Probably not. I wouldn't 'cause they talk about earlier in the movie that she's working on a book. She's working writing something, but I speaker-1: That's what I'm saying. Maybe that's the real Nikki? speaker-0: I don't know. That's ⁓ that's a good question. speaker-1: I don't think it it's never explained if that's the speaker-0: But it was awesome though, the way speaker-1: And you notice her voice changing? Like was that her or did they change her voice? speaker-0: I like I wanna believe that it that she's that talented that it was speaker-1: Well the accent I think was her, but I think the the actual her actual voice changes the last couple speaker-0: Yeah, a little bit of module. Yeah. Yeah. And then that's when he pulls the he pulls the card, the kiss the person to your left, and it's Sarah, the girl that they work with, and she she gets up and she gives her little her little Bobian another another little Cajun French nugget for y'all bob in. ⁓ and yeah, she just goes and stands behind her. And my I'm thinking, well She's gonna kill her. She's gonna hit her with something. She's gonna cut her face off or something. All she does was grab her chip and move her back. Move her out of the way. And one of the best, creepiest, most what the hell's gonna happen moments in in the movie. speaker-1: Chair and move right the way. I can tell you both viewings. I watched the movie like this. speaker-0: Yeah. Yeah. No one ⁓ And that's all that's all her. ⁓ yeah. That's all her. speaker-1: Yeah, pretty well and the directing, it's very impressive. He the his cinematographer or director photography, whatever you want to call him, was really talented. They gave him a good one. That guy, because he we watched the little featurette and he says, you know, when I met my DP. So they had no relationship together. He was just given this guy, and this guy did a masterful job at shooting this movie. ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah. It really did. Really did. speaker-1: So kudos to him. I mean, I know Clive Barker, he deserves he's the director, right? He deserves all the credit. But this D P, whoever this guy is, just he killed it, man. He did such a good job. Agreed. And without that cinematography, the movie doesn't work. You know, or not nearly as well. speaker-0: Yeah. Lots the the still shots and the tension and the the holding holding shots when you're not exactly sure what she's gonna do. The the smile and the Yeah, it was very, very masterfully done. ⁓ agreed one hundred percent. ⁓ so yeah, shortly after she moves the moves Sarah out of the way so that she's the only one that gets to kiss the dude, then she she snaps out of it, she's trying to get out and she speaker-1: Then she snaps out of it. speaker-0: breaks a bottle and joks herself up in the face with it two times. speaker-1: And then when they were out in hospital, he brings her to the hospital and she's like outside dancing and all of that. I didn't notice for some reason the first viewing, I didn't notice her dancing. I guess I was so ⁓ distraught or trying to figure out what the hell was going on. And I was watching him talk to the nursing staff, and they were basically telling him if she doesn't want to come in, we can't make her come in. so that was that was funny. speaker-0: Yeah, she was refusing the treatment. Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ she was she was losing it a little bit. speaker-1: And yet he still he still wants to hold on to it. speaker-0: Yeah. But I think at that point he's maybe trying to find a solution. But ⁓ Yeah, yeah, he's he just doesn't wanna speaker-1: Well, he has a solution. One of them has to die. Yeah. And of course he doesn't want to kill himself. speaker-0: Right. Right. And then that's when he goes to ⁓ the friend 'cause he follows speaker-1: Well he he goes to the store again and he thinks he can make another wish, but they tell him well you can't do it. Yeah. It has to be someone else. speaker-0: Tries and it can't the stick won't be broken. speaker-1: Now getting back to the store clerks, both of them, the girl at the beginning and the guy, they were great. Their performances were fantastic. I love them. speaker-0: Mm-hmm. Because the the girl was on the phone or earpods with somebody and she was talking and he couldn't figure out if she speaker-1: And they both knew that they were real that the one wish willows worked. Yes. And they basically both told him, Look, dude, it works. speaker-0: Yeah. Yeah. You know, like it was a big deal. speaker-1: Yeah, like it works and some people it it doesn't go as planned, but they do work. Yeah. So I thought that was an especially watching it the second time. It's like they told him, like the the first girl told him, Look, don't come back. speaker-0: All the signs all the signs were there. Plus there was a warning on the box. speaker-1: Like the like the Cajuns over here would say ⁓ Told you. So I thought that was interesting. speaker-0: Yeah. Yeah. So he he decides he's gonna get his friend Ian who he finds out had been hooking up with speaker-1: But at this point, he doesn't really care. No. Because he's he's so far in because she killed Sarah and he's he's ready to get out of this. So he goes to get the one with Willow. Doesn't work. He tries to break it anyway. He can't break it. So then he's like, Okay, the clerk told me I can get someone else. So he goes to Ian. That's his name, Ian. So he goes to Ian and tries to explain to him. But of course, who's gonna believe? speaker-0: ⁓ And doesn't believe. Yeah. You know, rightfully so, doesn't believe that I'm gonna break this stick that you bought at the at the at the head shop. And ⁓ and the wish is gonna come true. But ⁓ s moving back slightly before that, the scene with ⁓ Sarah in the car, she's trying to tell she's trying to get into art school. She's got her envelope and it's her last chance, she wants to open it with him. speaker-1: Six ninety nine. speaker-0: And she basically kinda tells him she has feeling like you don't need someone like Nikki, you need someone like me, basically. And then Nikki shows up and bashes her face in on a brick. speaker-1: Yep. And Indy does it herself, very impressive. They had no budget for stunt people. So they had to put a helmet on her head. speaker-0: And what did they say? Like they only had like three of those glasses? Three takes. speaker-1: They had three windows. The first one, they dropped it. Mm-hmm. The second one when they the second one when they broke it, a piece of styrofoam fell in the shot, ruined the whole shot. So then the third one had to be done right and they got it right. But they only had three windows to break. speaker-0: So they had two. She made It was like sugar windows, candy windows. Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ so that happened. ⁓ so okay, last I said before it was me, my this is my last nitpick. Why did they bring Sarah's body to the store? Because they show them taking her body they went to the music store and they show her loading, they show them loading her in the back of a car. I didn't understand that. speaker-1: Yeah, the only thing I could think of is speaker-0: Seems like an edit, like maybe they had something that they cut out and that's the only s shot they had. That's kinda what I figured. speaker-1: they dump the body somewhere but then she goes back and gets it and puts it in the house. speaker-0: And takes her clothes and and mimics her tattoos. I can imagine. speaker-1: You know they used a sex doll for that? That they ⁓ they it wasn't like an actor or anything. It they used a sex doll and just put the messed up face on it. speaker-0: ⁓ which the so the first time I watched it, I didn't catch that. That she had she was wearing Sarah's clothes and had mimicked her tattoos, like was this what you want? I'll be whatever you want me to be, kind of thing. ⁓ yeah, I didn't catch that. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. I didn't catch it the first time. Now so in the last so we're basically at the end in the encounter. You know, I saw her in the in the corner, right? You see her in the back corner by the window. I thought it was a little forced to do the try to do the creepy walk thing. Yeah. Like to me it would have just been better if she would have just walked slowly behind him. speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: Backwards earlier. That was funny when sh he was on the ground and he was like, You're not gonna hurt behind. She goes speaker-0: Yeah, yeah. She she's speaker-1: She did like she was gonna hurt him, but then she walks backwards. Yeah. I don't like I think those are kind of cheesy, those type of effects, because like it's been done so many times before. Yeah. ⁓ so the walking backwards one, okay. But the one at the end where she walks a little weird at yeah, we didn't need to see that. That that to me that was unnecessary. It almost felt out of place. So to me it would have just been better if she would have walked slowly behind him. But you know, what do I do? I don't know a director. ⁓ wait. speaker-0: Yeah. ⁓ wait, you are. so yeah, we we get So yeah, we get to the end, he decides that the only way to ⁓ when they they they talk earlier, there's a like one line about the dad having a gun in the in the shop in the safe in the music shop. So they got a hold of that. so we get to the end where his well, I was told the only way to to get out of this is if I die. speaker-1: Claim all kind of creed that I do not have. speaker-0: tries to shoot himself, decides he can't do it, so then he finds the medicine and takes the medicine and then you hear her speaker-1: Well no, she had the gun, she killed what's his name? The friend came in. Sorry if I missed that. ⁓ somebody rang my doorbell, I was looking. speaker-0: Yeah the friend came in and she killed him. Yeah, yeah. She the guy comes in, he's like, Hey, what's going on? I got a billion dollars. She shoots him right in the face. ⁓ and then yeah, he gets the gun, he takes it with him into the bathroom, can't do it, so he takes the the pills, and then you hear speaker-1: Before that, before you we get to that part, the way she was like just screaming at him, say it love me, say all of that stuff, so good. Yeah. So intense. And I just watching the movie, freaking out, even after I've already seen it. speaker-0: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, same. ⁓ I th it's it's just as as messed up and creepy watching it, no matter how many times you watch it. That's how that's how she was. Yeah. ⁓ but yeah, he he can't shoot himself. He takes the pills and then he's a coward. Right after he takes the pills, he hears her open up a one wish. speaker-1: Again, he's a coward. He he almost he regrets it and he starts to stick his fingers in his throat to throw up and she breaks the willow for him to love her. Right. So he doesn't vomit. Yeah. speaker-0: Stop Yeah. He stops and then goes in and then they love each other loving each other for like ten seconds. He ODs and dies, which breaks her curse. She comes to what the hell's going on, and then that's and then the the the shots on them on the couch, she's yelling and screaming. It r she it reminded me a lot of Pearl. Yeah. I meant to say that at the beginning. She reminds me a lot of Pearl the way speaker-1: Then he starts to O D. That's how the movie ends. He keeps screaming. speaker-0: She just kinda hold it just just a strange, strange what ⁓ Anyway, so yeah, the the shots the last shots on them, the camera flips upside down and shows the T V, whole two T V and the credits start rolling on the two yelling and screaming in the background. Which is they did two endings. ⁓ I think she said in the in the other ending, she actually she shoots herself. ⁓ she comes to and gets the gun and shoots herself. So speaker-1: And she's still screaming. And then Clive said basically in his mind, she gets in trouble for all the murders. Mm-hmm. ⁓ speaker-0: Now I have read that ⁓ the the director ⁓ not the director, the the guy that wrote it, ⁓ he had said that he does not intend for the speaker-1: Clyde or Clive. It's Curry. Clive Barker is the guy who did he did Hellraiser. I keep saying that. I meant Curry. speaker-0: Curry. Yeah, I was wondering, I was like, Man, I don't remember him being part speaker-1: There they're no there's no relation, by the way. Yeah. But ⁓ yeah, Clive Barker is the Hellraiser guy. Curry is I'm gonna I'm gonna put a disclaimer at the beginning. speaker-0: You might have to put up a ⁓ so yeah, anyway, he had said ⁓ like these characters, he does not plan on them to appear in any other because I'm sure people are gonna be knocking down this guy's door. ⁓ yeah. speaker-1: Yeah, he's already he's ⁓ been hired to do the next Texas chainsaw. speaker-0: Yeah. So yeah, he said that these characters are not gonna appear in another story. However, he's kind of thinking of a series where different people get one wish willows like every every episode is gonna be a different character making a different wish and kinda how how it goes downhill. So I think that's kind of a really okay kind of a neat idea. speaker-1: As long as it's not love, it's gotta be other things like money or power and speaker-0: And I I think that's that's kinda where they're going with it, which would be I'd I'd watch that. Yeah. I'd watch that in this style of in this style. Yeah. speaker-1: So other than the only real issue I have with the movie is the cat getting into the medication. Not sure. I've had cats my whole life. I don't think they would even do that. If it's a liquid, I can see them drink. I mean, I've had cats drink stuff. It's like, why are you drinking that? Coffee, Coke, whatever. Yeah. why the cat would take the medicine is interesting. speaker-0: It's it would be imp And then reverse a little bit more because they he's living this is should have been in the beginning, but he's living in his grandmother's house. Correct. It was her mask, and he mentioned him her dying, and he mentions that when the grandmother dies, she was the only person he could Nikki was the only person he could talk to and all that. But that's like that's a half a second of the movie. they maybe could have could have expanded on that a little bit. Like there's a lot of things you kinda have to figure out, which is okay. Anyway, yeah, the cat getting into the medicine was just like speaker-1: Yeah, it's the biggest issue with the movie that I and other people have talked about. But if you can get past that, which we can get past a lot of things in movies, it's just so well done. First time director who did comedy YouTube videos to and with ⁓ the guy Ian, apparently, that's his good friend that they make all these they made all these shorts and stuff. So I I just kudos to them. I'm happy for their success. speaker-0: Yes. Yes. Yeah. Forty five million dollars? ⁓ four hundred and fifty, I'm sorry. Four hundred and fifty million dollars for a horror movie. Yeah. And yeah, it's it was good for them. speaker-1: Thousand million. Forty five. ⁓ Indy made thirty thousand dollars, the guy made twenty thousand dollars, that was their salary for the role. I mean, she had to start streaming Call of Duty because she had to pay rent, you know, after she made the movie because the movies was made a couple of years ago, it had to go through all the festival circuits. So yeah. speaker-0: Yeah. That's about to change. Mm-hmm. Yeah, it's a twenty it's twenty twenty five. I don't think it got to the theaters until twenty six, right? This speaker-1: ⁓ well no I think wasn't it the end of twenty five? I don't know. Either way, but the movie was made before that. Like it's two or three years old. I gotcha. It's it's been around a while. They ⁓ but you know, 'cause he was only like twenty two when he directed it. He's like twenty five now. speaker-0: Okay. And she's been I looked at her credits, she's been in other stuff, like T V shows and stuff. But not No, no, no. Looks like ⁓ from what I rem I don't even remember the names of any of it, but like kind of teenage shows. Yeah. ⁓ catering to a much younger audience than than we are. speaker-1: And that you and I watch. So yes, I really enjoy this movie. This movie's a solid eight for me. Solid eight. ⁓ speaker-0: I agree. I don't remember if I said this at the beginning or not. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a movie so much that I had so many questions about and kinda problems with, but at the end it all melts away. It doesn't matter. like we said earlier, the way it was shot, the acting, the performances, the the creepiness of it, can't argue with innate. Nah. Can't argue with innate. I I I am interested to watch the the Blu-ray version though to see. So I speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-0: And these didn't these kind of came out at the same time in a similar story. speaker-1: Stories as far as the director, first time young guy he was younger. The backrooms kid was only like twenty. So I have a lot of respect. It's a well crafted movie. I just didn't enjoy it as much as this. speaker-0: Yeah. I hadn't it's okay. I hadn't seen it. ⁓ Jacob went and watched it at the movies and he talked about how good it was, but I I haven't ⁓ I haven't seen it. And this is another one. I'll be I'll be going into that completely blind. I have no idea anything about speaker-1: So this Halloween we're gonna have a lot of what's her name? Nickies, I think. We'll have some Nikki's and some obsession cosplays coming. speaker-0: Yeah, probably so. That's okay. speaker-1: She said of course the the biggest quote she gets is the no, no, no, no. She gets that more than anything. speaker-0: Yeah. Is that when the at the restaurant when they're on the speaker-1: Yeah, yeah. Thought we were having a good date. speaker-0: Yeah. That's another thing where if you watch the background, he's on the phone with Ian. Ian calls her. ⁓ She's she's like comes into the shot for a second and went s like checking on him and then went sent back down. ⁓ again, completely out of focus. Like you miss it. If you're not watching, you definitely miss it. little little gems like that is what what made part of what made this one special. speaker-1: Stands up. Brilliant little movie. Yeah. Yes. Get obsession on Four K or watch it. I I think it's on Peacock and I don't know if Peacock is four K or not, but speaker-0: Like it. Loved it. Loved it. So yes. Get it. ⁓ speaker-1: it on 4K to get the full effect. If you don't watch it on 4K, you're gonna you're gonna be robbed of the not being able to see. speaker-0: Yeah. And I I was on the fence about getting it, not watching it first. it was not a waste. I'm very, very glad I got it. If I would have watched it, I would have bought it anyway. Yeah. So not not an issue with me buying it before seeing it. speaker-1: All right. Well, that'll wrap it up. speaker-0: Yeah, was fun. We've been talking about doing this one for a long time. We had a we had a lot to say. So hopefully get some feedback. Let us know how we did, what was the movie. ⁓ this is one of those things that kinda everyone everyone I think maybe who's watching us will have seen. So let us know what y'all think about it and yeah, we look forward to hearing from y'all. All right. speaker-1: We missed. Like, subscribe, tell your friends, and we'll see you on the next one. speaker-0: See ya.
