- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini scroll,
- 0:22everyone, and happy 10,000 subscribers on YouTube to us.
- 0:28I changed our sign today to celebrate.
- 0:31That's the extent of my celebration.
- 0:32I was thinking of getting us balloons, but I was like, I
- 0:34don't even know where to get those number balloons.
- 0:36So we're going with the sign. This was a huge week of
- 0:39milestones for us. We hit 100,000 followers on
- 0:42TikTok. We hit 10,000 subscribers on
- 0:45YouTube, and we hit 1 million views on YouTube.
- 0:48So lots of things to celebrate all around.
- 0:51And Speaking of milestones, I think it's really cool to
- 0:53include that it's also 20 years of Apple podcasts this weekend,
- 0:58which is really cool because that's what really made the
- 1:00medium go like super mainstream was Apple kind of adding the
- 1:03podcast symbol and like really promoting podcasts.
- 1:07So very cool. I found this actually through
- 1:09the Unmade newsletter by Tim Burroughs.
- 1:11So if you care about Australian media, advertising, marketing, I
- 1:15highly recommend subscribing to Unmade.
- 1:17All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 1:19The first story that I have you guys, of course, obviously it
- 1:22has to be the woman who is going so viral for her amazing
- 1:27facelift that she got in Guadalajara.
- 1:30So a TikTok user named at Michelle Wood, 165 is making the
- 1:34rounds on TikTok after documenting her experience
- 1:37getting a facelift in Mexico. The first video that she posted
- 1:40was on the 6th of June where she introduced herself and
- 1:43essentially explained why she decided to get a facelift and
- 1:46what exactly she planned to get done.
- 1:48So the video has since accumulated 16 million views and
- 1:52Michelle has amassed over 158,000 followers in this time.
- 1:57She has now gone on to share many videos of her healing from
- 2:01her surgery and has answered a whole lot of questions from
- 2:04viewers. So some viewers are asking more
- 2:07personal questions like how she feels about it all, while others
- 2:09are more logistical questions like how much it cost.
- 2:13In one video, she revealed that it cost roughly 15,000 USD
- 2:17total, which if you know anything about face and necklace
- 2:20like that is a steal. No wonder she went to Mexico for
- 2:24that. And it looks so good.
- 2:25It literally took her from looking in her 50s to in her
- 2:2920s. And she's still obviously quite
- 2:30swollen. Like, I think it takes a full
- 2:32year, they say, to like, properly heal from a facelift.
- 2:35So it's going to get better and better.
- 2:36But it is wild how good she looks.
- 2:39That is one of the primary reasons why she's gone viral.
- 2:41Obviously so many people are shocked by the results of this
- 2:45facelift. One person even described it as
- 2:47the quote. Best non celebrity facelift I've
- 2:49ever seen. The second reason that is going
- 2:51viral is people are just really interested in how open she's
- 2:56being with this procedure when there are, you know, allegedly
- 2:59more and more celebrities getting this type of work done.
- 3:02It's exceptionally refreshing to see somebody just come online
- 3:05and be like, Yep, I'm getting a facelift done.
- 3:06And like, let me document this process for you.
- 3:09And the third reason why it's going viral, this is such a
- 3:12conspiracy theory, but there is a theory that the woman that is
- 3:17claiming to be the after of the facelift is not even the same
- 3:21person. You know, this is just Internet
- 3:23that users like taking this and running with it.
- 3:25Obviously this is very unlikely, but it has undoubtedly led to
- 3:30many more people going to view her content and to kind of like
- 3:33jump in on this possible conspiracy theory.
- 3:35I was actually having a similar conversation with Maddie from
- 3:37High Stakes. She was saying she has no idea
- 3:40how old anyone ever is because she's like especially in RA
- 3:43industry in media and working very much like she works in like
- 3:47beauty and lifestyle. That's even more so like the
- 3:50women that work in those industries.
- 3:51A lot of them like in media and stuff like they are very much
- 3:53getting like constant work done, right.
- 3:55Sometimes it's for work, like sometimes for like stories and
- 3:58research. And sometimes it's just part of
- 4:00the pressure of like working in that industry.
- 4:02But like everybody has Botox and filler and like now these
- 4:05surgical procedures are becoming more and more sophisticated.
- 4:09And, you know, gone are the days when a woman would get a
- 4:11facelift and you could see the scars or like the kind of the
- 4:15skin pulled back around her ears and she couldn't move her head
- 4:19back and forth. Right?
- 4:20Like now we're getting full on like Kris Jenner face
- 4:22transplants. And they genuinely look 50 years
- 4:26younger. And it's so wild.
- 4:29I feel like this very much ties into filter culture.
- 4:32You know, there's some research out there about like young
- 4:34people and what it's like for them growing up, watching their
- 4:37faces through filters on like Snapchat, TikTok, whatever, and
- 4:41looking at other other people's faces that are filtered and
- 4:44thinking that they're real. And yeah, it's it's very
- 4:47interesting. We're at this creepy ass time in
- 4:51like a beauty, anti aging kind of womanhood in general.
- 4:55And I do want to get off this ride.
- 4:59Like, I do wish that none of this stuff existed so we could
- 5:02all just be like out here raw dogging our own beauty and being
- 5:06like, this is just what I look like.
- 5:07Like we're all on the same playing field.
- 5:09But unfortunately that is not the case.
- 5:12OK, the next story that I have for you guys is I need to cover
- 5:16the Waterboy Maddie Murata controversy.
- 5:19So this was from a YouTube comment.
- 5:21One of you guys commented, asked me to speak on it.
- 5:23So this is what I found. If we have missed anything, let
- 5:26me know. There is currently a lot of
- 5:28backlash being levelled toward the social media manager of
- 5:31Waterboy, which is a hydration brand that sells a variety of
- 5:34electrolyte products. The social media manager's name
- 5:37is Maddie Murata, so Maddie has her own social media presence
- 5:41with her personal account. She has over 200,000 followers
- 5:45and she's had a fair few viral moments over the years.
- 5:47Waterboy recently hosted a brand trip in Tulum.
- 5:50There were a couple of big name creators there like Halle Kate,
- 5:53Bran Flakes, Ken Urich and more. You know that whole crew.
- 5:57I keep up with that crew in case you guys couldn't tell.
- 6:01Like I am constantly eyes on that crew.
- 6:05So Waterboy also did giveaways for the brand trip, which
- 6:08allowed non influencers to attend.
- 6:10It has become the norm to kind of hate on these brand trips, as
- 6:13we know, we've talked about it so many times.
- 6:15And while these trips are usually criticized for their
- 6:17unabashed displays of wealth, this one has faced a different
- 6:21kind of critique, most of them being toward the new social
- 6:24media manager, Maddie. So from what I've seen, many
- 6:27TikTok users were unimpressed with the content that she was
- 6:30putting out, saying that she wasn't acting like the voice of
- 6:33the brand, but rather that she was simply an attendee on the
- 6:37trip. For instance, there was a lot of
- 6:38content from the trip around how some attendees, like
- 6:41influencers, were drunk or hungover.
- 6:44Many social media managers and marketers on TikTok have pointed
- 6:47out how this would have been the perfect opportunity for Maddie
- 6:50to incorporate the brand in the content that was being put out
- 6:54of these creators being like hungover and drunk.
- 6:56And, you know, it's an electrolyte brand.
- 6:58And she kind of dropped the ball on that one.
- 7:00On top of this, many have criticized Maddie for not
- 7:03including enough content about the non influencers on the trip
- 7:07since it obviously was a significant kind of point of
- 7:10interest for this brand trip specifically.
- 7:12All in all, much of this discourse around the brand trip
- 7:15is that Maddie and Waterboy kind of dropped the ball when it came
- 7:18to brand messaging and content planning.
- 7:21On the flip side, some are defending Maddie.
- 7:23Various TikTok users have noted that it was literally her first
- 7:28day on on the job and perhaps she was not given enough
- 7:33direction the first day on the job.
- 7:35Like, talk about being thrown in the deep end.
- 7:37OK, think about how bad you are at a job in your first like
- 7:41several months, let alone your first day.
- 7:44And others have pointed out that like the strategy that happened
- 7:46here, like whatever took place here seemed to be smart because
- 7:49people are tired of these brand trips and this kind of content
- 7:53brings them into the behind the scenes of the trip a little bit
- 7:56more. But at the end of the day,
- 7:57obviously this has truly brought Butter Boy into the cultural
- 8:01zeitgeist, whether it's negative or positive.
- 8:03So if the goal was brand awareness, which usually for
- 8:06these trips it is, I mean, Maddie definitely accomplished
- 8:09that. Overall, this is an interesting
- 8:11case study on the type of content that people actually
- 8:14want to see from brand trips. So if we're going to take the
- 8:17general feedback, like the average feedback from Maddie's
- 8:21content, it would appear that users actually want brand
- 8:25accounts to produce more polished content, especially on
- 8:28these types of trips. I don't know if that's
- 8:30necessarily true. I think it's more that people
- 8:32are frustrated when they feel like people in the influencer
- 8:35space, whether it's the marketing manager who gets to go
- 8:38on these trips, right? That's still kind of like a
- 8:39privilege. I mean, I get your working and
- 8:41I'm sure it's like hell, but regardless or the influencers,
- 8:45whatever, it's like such a glamorized experience and a
- 8:48glamorized industry and people who are not working in
- 8:51industries like this feel like these are the lucky ones.
- 8:54And so I think sometimes people feel frustrated when it feels
- 8:58like influencers don't take their job seriously.
- 9:00Or you know, in this case, it would be like the social media
- 9:03manager like got this big opportunity and they kind of
- 9:06squandered it. They took the piss a bit and
- 9:08that's kind of how it felt like they didn't show up prepared to
- 9:11their job when everybody else kind of watched.
- 9:13She feels like if I performed that poorly at my job, like I
- 9:16would just get fired and I don't have as cool of a job as that.
- 9:19In other industry related news, this is going to be tea for the
- 9:23marketing girlies. Maybe you guys know this
- 9:25already, but Cans Lions is going viral for some fake case
- 9:29studies, allegedly, that were presented at the event.
- 9:33So if you're not familiar with Cannes Lions, it's an
- 9:36international event for people that work in like creative
- 9:38communications, advertising, marketing, those fields.
- 9:42And there are opportunities to win various awards.
- 9:45And two of the festival's winners have found themselves in
- 9:48the center of some controversy this year, which included case
- 9:52studies that were allegedly fabricated.
- 9:55As reported by AD Age quote days after Cannes Lions wrapped two
- 9:58of the festival's top winners, both Brazilian agencies under
- 10:01Omnicon groups DDB Network, are facing scrutiny over case
- 10:05studies submitted with their entries.
- 10:07And the fallout has already led to a leadership shake up at one
- 10:11of the agencies. Essentially, these case studies
- 10:14included AI generated videos of Ted talks and news clips.
- 10:18Cannes Lions has issued a statement on the matter saying
- 10:21quote. Cannes Lions has confirmed that
- 10:23after consultation with the entry company DM9, the Creative
- 10:27Data Alliance Grand Prix winner Efficient way to pay for Console
- 10:31has been withdrawn. This follows the discovery that
- 10:34AI generated and manipulated content was used within the case
- 10:37film to simulate real world events and campaign outcomes,
- 10:41resulting in the jury being presented with inaccurate
- 10:44information during their deliberations.
- 10:47And they also included various measures that will be put forth
- 10:50to try and prevent this from ever happening again.
- 10:53Stuff about advertising on TikTok that this is not just a
- 10:56cans problem. Noting that these campaigns have
- 10:58been lauded across other industry awards and
- 11:01publications, she goes on to take issue with the complacency
- 11:04that has started to circulate. So many people upon hearing this
- 11:08news about the fake case studies are going Oh well that's just
- 11:10advertising, what do you mean we need to do more?
- 11:14She goes on to note how embarrassing it is for the
- 11:16people willing to fabricate stories and results for success,
- 11:20before pointing out that it is unfortunately an industry wide
- 11:24issue. All of this is part of the
- 11:25reason why people are so distrustful of ads and the
- 11:28industry at large. Obviously this signals a bigger
- 11:31problem with the concept of AI generated content and the fact
- 11:36that this was not flagged or noticed before they went on to
- 11:39win is kind of wild. It's scary for what the future
- 11:44holds for us for sure, but it is literally so true.
- 11:48I have spoken about this in different keynotes that I've
- 11:51done different panels. Like this industry is so shady.
- 11:57And I always say to like marketers or anyone that is like
- 12:00asking questions about it. It's like, you know what if a
- 12:04brand, a publisher, whatever is telling you they are reaching
- 12:07like X amount of people and it sounds way too good to be true,
- 12:10Ask for screenshots, ask for fucking screen recordings.
- 12:13Like ask for proof. Because the chances that they
- 12:17are actually reaching those numbers, if it sounds so wild,
- 12:21it's because they're not. Like there's so much smoke and
- 12:24mirrors in this industry. It is so frustrating.
- 12:27And that's for me, it's so important that I'm like always
- 12:29up here being so transparent with you guys because like, it's
- 12:31also my brand, right? So like it, it's a little bit
- 12:34different than me, just like working on behalf of a different
- 12:37publisher or different media brand and trying to like hit my
- 12:39target or whatever, right? Like this is my reputation at
- 12:42stake as like an individual. So like I'm always going to be
- 12:46as honest as possible with you guys, with our advertisers, with
- 12:49whoever. But you know, that's just like
- 12:51not the reality across the board.
- 12:53So much of this like awards, metrics, whatever.
- 12:56It's so smoke and mirrors. That's why I was in the camp of
- 13:00being like relatively supportive of the decision from Spotify to
- 13:03release the views per video. I understand they rolled that
- 13:06back because of the feedback that smaller creators were
- 13:08giving them. And I also understand that
- 13:10feedback too, where podcasting was like the safe space that
- 13:13didn't really matter, like if you had a lot of subscribers or
- 13:16whatever because you couldn't really tell.
- 13:17And so like, users were more likely to find, you know, your
- 13:20random small niche podcast or like be interested in listening
- 13:23to it because there was no way to tell how many people were
- 13:27assuming it. So anyways, but that is one of
- 13:30the reasons why I was like somewhat supportive of it
- 13:32because people, the things that I hear as a media founder here,
- 13:36then some of the metrics that brands that are like my
- 13:39competitors are going out and saying, I'm like, that is like
- 13:42actually physically impossible. That is impossible that you are
- 13:46hitting those numbers. Like I know, I know.
- 13:49And unless you're in it, it's hard to know.
- 13:51OK. And the last story that I have
- 13:53for you guys, this is just a bit of a continuation on from
- 13:55Thursday. But Brooke Schofield has
- 13:57confirmed that she is in fact, engaged, and she has faced some
- 14:01backlash for how she is defending it.
- 14:03So Brooke has confirmed her engagement to Miles Canton, AKA
- 14:06Miles McFly, who is the son of movie producer Neil Canton of
- 14:10the Back to the Future trilogy. Brooke has truly been in the
- 14:13trenches of the comments section on TikTok defending her
- 14:17relationship and clapping back at users who are criticizing
- 14:20them. For very quick context, Miles
- 14:24was accused of dating a high school student while he was in
- 14:26his late 20s. There does seem to be a lot of
- 14:29evidence online, but this is obviously all alleged.
- 14:32Brooke has repeatedly defended Miles against the allegations
- 14:35ever since being together, saying that it's just like
- 14:37Reddit that has made all of this up.
- 14:40So Brooke has spent a lot of time post engagement kind of
- 14:42defending herself online. One person commented.
- 14:45As a huge fan, I'm so glad she is seemingly happy, but I'm so
- 14:49disappointed in literally the entirety of the friend group for
- 14:52supporting that weirdo. Brooke had the ability for a
- 14:55redemption arc and we lost her. And then Brooke responded.
- 14:58Reddit Fable. I like the word fable, I'll give
- 15:01her that. But probably the most kind of
- 15:03egregious example of Brooke clapping back that has truly
- 15:07blown up was to a TikTok user named Ashlyn.
- 15:10Basically, Ashlyn made a video saying that it makes perfect
- 15:13sense that Brooke is marrying Miles despite the allegations
- 15:16and the fact that they have only been together for a short amount
- 15:18of time because she suffers from BPD.
- 15:21Ashlyn pulled from her own experience given that she also
- 15:24has BPD. Brooke went to comment on
- 15:26Ashlyn's video. It has been deleted, but
- 15:29nevertheless, this is what the comments said.
- 15:30I have gone through actual unimaginable things and
- 15:33relationships and I've shared all of that to help other
- 15:36people, not to have a thrown back in my face.
- 15:38I just got engaged to a man I've been living with for a year, a
- 15:41man who has never so much as raised his voice at me, who
- 15:44makes my life better and easier in every way he knows how.
- 15:48I have never laughed harder or felt more supported and loved.
- 15:52I have never met you, I never will.
- 15:53You do not know more about my relationship than me.
- 15:56You don't even know where your eyebrows are.
- 15:59Brooke doubled down, making fun of Ashlyn's appearance, saying
- 16:02you actually can't talk about me with bangs like that, now that I
- 16:04think about it. Ashlyn took it in stride,
- 16:07responding with a video where she said Yikes, girl, where is
- 16:09your manager? And then she also made a follow
- 16:12up saying that Brooke had blocked her.
- 16:14So OK. Like, is it shitty that like
- 16:15during this very special moment for Brooke, like the whole
- 16:19Internet is coming for her? Like yes, of course this is
- 16:21probably somewhat ruining it for her.
- 16:23She should have posted if she was going to post it.
- 16:25She was engaged and just like logged off.
- 16:28You know, this obviously will blow over in like the next few
- 16:31days. She should have just like not
- 16:32looked at the comments, like just ignored it all.
- 16:35But like, first of all, like continually defending this and
- 16:37then stooping so low as to like make fun of some random person
- 16:41and like what they look like. And you know, like she was
- 16:44trying to like relate herself to Brooke anyways.
- 16:47I it was just like such a low blow.
- 16:49I will say though, it seems like the majority of users are using
- 16:53this as kind of like a gotcha moment for Brooke because they
- 16:56don't like her, which is valid. OK.
- 16:58There is lots of reasons not to like Brooke.
- 17:00And I think the heat for this specific situation should go way
- 17:04more on Miles, the man who did this before he even knew Brooke.
- 17:08You know that on Brooke, but I understand she's also the one
- 17:11with the platform. She's the one bringing him into
- 17:13her audience. So yeah, I understand.
- 17:17I understand. But it's not a good look.
- 17:19And she just needs to log off. Like what other influencer is
- 17:23out here defending themselves this shamelessly this often?
- 17:28And they don't do that for good reason because then it blows up
- 17:30like this. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 17:32Mini Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 17:35I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
