- 0:01Bigger is the wrong goal. There's a story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad #12111 to upgrade your
- 0:09mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:12Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:14yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:17Mark Miller. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:19You may think your problem would be solved if you were just a
- 0:22little bigger. But upgraded thinking knows
- 0:24better comes first, and bigger follows.
- 0:27Here's the story. In 1946, True Kathy and his
- 0:32brother Ben opened a little diner in Hapefield, Georgia.
- 0:35They called it the Dwarf Grill. Tin stools, 4 booths.
- 0:40They started another restaurant with a really funny name.
- 0:43The first Chick-fil-A restaurant didn't open until 196721 years
- 0:48later. And that first Chick-fil-A in an
- 0:51Atlanta mall was 384 square feet. 21 years of work, learning
- 0:56and persistence, followed by another small beginning.
- 1:00Fast forward to the 1990s. A chain called Boston Chicken
- 1:03went public in 1993, raised a pile of money, started opening
- 1:07restaurants at a fast pace, and was a serious competitor to
- 1:10Chick-fil-A. Chick-fil-A's leaders started
- 1:13talking about how to respond, how to grow faster, how to get
- 1:16bigger. Truitt Kathy, who was not a
- 1:19table pounder, started pounding the table.
- 1:22And when the room went quiet, he said if we get better, our
- 1:26customers will demand that we get bigger.
- 1:30Here's how it played out. Boston Market, as it was called
- 1:33by then, filed for bankruptcy in 1998.
- 1:37McDonald's bought it in 2000. That same year, Chick-fil-A
- 1:41passed a billion dollars in sales.
- 1:44One meeting didn't decide all of that.
- 1:46But the contrast is hard to miss.
- 1:48One chased bigger. One chased better.
- 1:51Truett understood. Two things.
- 1:53First, bigger isn't in your control.
- 1:56Customers decide that. Better is completely in your
- 2:00control. You decide that every day.
- 2:04Second, bigger before better breaks things.
- 2:07Growth you're not ready for doesn't build you up.
- 2:09It exposes you. Getting better is how you get
- 2:12ready for bigger. John Wooden, the great UCLA
- 2:15coach, built his pyramid of success near the very top.
- 2:19Just under success. He put patience.
- 2:23His note under it was just 4 words.
- 2:25Good things take time 1 and bigger isn't bad.
- 2:30You probably want a bigger audience, a bigger paycheck, a
- 2:33bigger influence, a bigger team. That's fine.
- 2:37But you don't control bigger. You control better.
- 2:41The better story to tell yourself is get better.
- 2:45Bigger will find me. These messages aren't the bigger
- 2:49story to tell yourself. Pick one thing you do and make
- 2:53it a little better today, then do it again tomorrow.
- 2:57Let your work get so good that people demand more of it.
- 3:02Tell me a story of a time getting better mattered more
- 3:05than getting bigger. To from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:08Send someone a text and ask them.
- 3:10Just out of curiosity, what's one thing you could get better
