- 0:02What a fitting song for what we're about to discover today in
- 0:04God's Word. And with that being said, I
- 0:07gladly invite you to take God's Word and meet me in the Book of
- 0:10Revelation chapter 14. By God's help, we're going to
- 0:15accomplish and complete this chapter together as we look at
- 0:19the final verses of it, beginning in verse 14 of chapter
- 0:2314. Now we have to remember that
- 0:30although the Book of Revelation is generally chronological, what
- 0:34chapter 14 does is pauses that sequence and offers us a few
- 0:40previews of coming events that have not yet been realized.
- 0:45And so the play button to the general storyline of Revelation
- 0:49is going to be pressed again in chapter 15.
- 0:51But for now, what we find in this text, in this chapter in
- 0:55particular, is a Lord providing encouragement to his people,
- 1:00especially after encountering the very bleak prophecy of the
- 1:03Antichrist in Revelation chapter 13.
- 1:07That's why when you come to chapter 14, you get the series
- 1:10of forward-looking predictions and prophecies of what's yet to
- 1:14come, like Christ standing on Mount Zion, victorious and
- 1:18reigning the destruction of the Babylonian system that was
- 1:23exporting all the filth and the sin.
- 1:25Of the world. The eternal doom of the unsaved,
- 1:28and with that, the eternal rest of those who die in the Lord.
- 1:33This is the Lord by the Holy Spirit, reminding the believer
- 1:37who's reading this that we will be victorious in the end.
- 1:41Do not lose hope. And yet John receives a final
- 1:47vision before the natural. Flow of the text of this book
- 1:52continues and it deals with. The final judgement that Christ
- 1:59will bring to the wicked, not in eternity, but upon the earth.
- 2:07Another way of understanding what we're about to read is that
- 2:09John is describing to us in summary, what we are going to
- 2:13find out in greater detail from chapters 15 through chapters 19.
- 2:20And what we're going to see here is essentially a summation of
- 2:25the final, of the final acts of God's holy wrath toward those
- 2:30who have denied him just before the return of the Son of God.
- 2:36Remember, we learned that there are a total of three major sets
- 2:41of judgments that will be unleashed upon the earth, each
- 2:43consisting of seven acts. And we already completed the
- 2:46first two series. We looked at the seven seal
- 2:50judgments. We consider the seven trumpet
- 2:52judgments. But there is one more, the seven
- 2:56bowls of God's wrath, the most intense succession of God's
- 3:00judgments. Again just before Christ
- 3:03returns. They will serve to put the last
- 3:05things in order before He establishes His.
- 3:08Reign in this world and these verses that we're about to look
- 3:14at are a trailer to those judgments, A prelude for us to
- 3:20consider. Let's read from verse 14 down to
- 3:24verse 20. Then I looked, and behold the
- 3:29white cloud. And seated on the cloud, like a
- 3:32son of man with a golden crown on his head and a sharp sickle
- 3:36in his hand. And another Angel came out of
- 3:39the temple, calling with a loud voice to him who sat on the
- 3:42cloud. Put in your sickle and reap, for
- 3:46the hour to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is
- 3:49fully ripe. So he who sat on the clouds
- 3:52swung his sickle across the earth, and the earth was reaped.
- 3:57Then another Angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too
- 4:01had a sharp sickle. And another Angel came out from
- 4:04the altar, the Angel who has authority over the fire.
- 4:08And he called with a loud voice to the one who had the sharp
- 4:10sickle. Put in your sickle and gather
- 4:13the clusters from the vine of the earth, for its grapes are
- 4:16ripe. So the Angel.
- 4:18Swung his sickle across the earth and gathered the great
- 4:21harvest of the earth and threw it into the great wine Press of
- 4:24the wrath of God. And the wine press was trodden
- 4:28outside the city, and blood flowed from the wine press as
- 4:32high as a horse's bridle. For 1600 Stadium Lord, we ask
- 4:39oh, how we need your help with this text, how we need your
- 4:42wisdom, how we need your protection.
- 4:46Lead us to the right conclusions.
- 4:48Guide us to the right interpretation.
- 4:51And Lord, we pray that even if we do come to the clarity of
- 4:55these verses that it would not just sit in our minds where we
- 4:58pray that they would move our hearts to worship.
- 5:01You can only do this by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 5:03And we pray that his power would be known in this message.
- 5:07In Jesus name we pray, Amen. Isn't it interesting that the
- 5:13way that the holy. Spirit wants to describe the
- 5:16concluding acts of God's judgement upon the earth before
- 5:18his Son returns is by depicting a harvest, the reaping of a
- 5:24harvest. Now most of us in here are
- 5:28familiar enough with the Word of God to understand that the
- 5:31harvest or a harvest is regularly recognized as a
- 5:35positive thing, the in gathering of souls saved by the gospel.
- 5:40And we just sang about it, right?
- 5:41The harvest is white, it's ready, and that is true in many
- 5:45cases. A harvest does speak about a
- 5:48move of God, the salvation of souls, the gathering in of more
- 5:53into his Kingdom. At the same time, there are many
- 5:56places in the Bible that depict a harvest and the reaping of a
- 5:59harvest as an act of judgment. You find this throughout the Old
- 6:03Testament. You even find in some some of
- 6:05Jesus parables. And the diligence student of the
- 6:10Scripture, then, should not be so surprised to consider how
- 6:13God's. Outpouring of wrath is
- 6:16illustrated here through this act of harvesting.
- 6:22But there is another challenge with this text, however.
- 6:25And the challenge lies in the fact that it seems as though
- 6:27there are two harvests being explained here.
- 6:31Did you notice that? Look again at verse 16.
- 6:35So he was sat on the clouds, swung his sickle across the
- 6:38earth, and the earth was reaped. OK, that's one.
- 6:43That's one reaping, and it's across the whole earth, so there
- 6:47should be nothing left. And then you keep reading and
- 6:49what do you stumble upon? Look at verse 19.
- 6:52So the Angel swung his sickle across the earth and gathered
- 6:56the grape harvest of the earth and threw it into the great
- 6:59winepress of the wrath of God, just in case nobody sees it.
- 7:05There is a clear distinction here.
- 7:08What you have with verse 16 is 1 like a son of man sitting on a
- 7:11cloud, and he swings his sickle and he reaps from the earth,
- 7:15which strongly suggests that this is speaking about a grain
- 7:18harvest. It's from the earth.
- 7:21No added details. Then you go on and you realize
- 7:24that there is another Reaper, but it's not one like a son of
- 7:28man, it's an Angel. And he does have a sharp sickle
- 7:31himself, but when he swings it across the earth, he doesn't
- 7:34gather in grain. He gathers in what grapes.
- 7:40So a lot of people interpret it in this way.
- 7:44This is speaking about two different kinds of harvest.
- 7:47The first one with the grain, the one that the Son of Man is
- 7:51orchestrating, refers to a harvest of righteousness.
- 7:55This is the Lord sweeping in the remaining of the redeemed just
- 7:59before he pours out his wrath. Meanwhile, the grape harvest
- 8:04speaks about a harvesting of the final of the wicked before the
- 8:09Son of God comes and establishes his government.
- 8:13And while that may seem plausible, there is evidence in
- 8:18this text that would suggest a different conclusion.
- 8:22And there are two main important observations that we have to
- 8:25acknowledge in order for us to be open to something else.
- 8:29Number one, what John is doing here is something that he does
- 8:33so regularly throughout his writings in this book.
- 8:36He's alluding to an Old Testament prophecy, and the Old
- 8:40Testament prophecy that he seeks to connect is that of what Joel
- 8:44said in Joel chapter 3. Turn with me to Joel chapter 3
- 8:48and look here with me beginning at verse 12 of Joel chapter 3,
- 8:53because when we turn there, we're going to get more clarity
- 8:55of what John seems to be communicating here in this
- 8:57vision in Revelation chapter 14, Joel chapter 3.
- 9:01Look at verse 12. It's not a common book, so it
- 9:06may take you some time to get there.
- 9:07That's OK. Joel chapter 3 verse 12.
- 9:16Let the nation's stir themselves up and come up to the Valley of
- 9:21Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding
- 9:26nations. Put in the sickle, for the
- 9:29harvest is ripe. Go in tread for the winepress is
- 9:33full. The vats overflow for their evil
- 9:38is great. Did you notice how verse 13 is
- 9:41almost a perfect summary of what John seems to be elaborating on
- 9:45in his vision? Here you have a sickle.
- 9:48A sickle. For a ripe harvest.
- 9:50More than that, it's followed by the description of an
- 9:52overflowing winepress, just like the two types of reapings that
- 9:57we saw in our main text. And if you're willing to accept
- 10:01that, then you also have to understand that what Joel is
- 10:04speaking about here is judgement.
- 10:07Everything surrounding this picture is judgment.
- 10:10There is no hint here of a righteous harvesting or
- 10:13salvation. Everything surrounding this
- 10:15imagery speaks of wrath. And it could be that what John,
- 10:20John is doing is taking and borrowing from this prophecy and
- 10:24expanding it by the Spirit to convey that the fulfillment of
- 10:28this prophecy of a comprehensive judgment of all nations is at
- 10:32hand. Here's a second important
- 10:36observation. That may lead to a different
- 10:38conclusion of the two types of harvest in Revelation 14.
- 10:42It's found in a word in Revelation 14.
- 10:44So go back to that text and look again at verse 15 and consider
- 10:48something with me that is so important to unpack.
- 10:51Revelation 14, verse 15. John sees and writes and another
- 10:55Angel. Came out of the temple calling
- 10:57with a loud voice to him who sat on the cloud.
- 11:00Put in your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come.
- 11:04For the harvest of the earth is fully ripe.
- 11:09Underline that word ripe. Do you know what that word
- 11:13means? Well, at face value, seems like
- 11:15a good thing that the harvest has reached its full maturation,
- 11:18that it's ready. It's ready to be plucked.
- 11:21It's ready to be gathered in. It's fulfilled its purpose.
- 11:26But here's where word studies help.
- 11:28When you actually look at the original word for ripe here, it
- 11:31does not mean ready. It actually means.
- 11:35Over ripe. In other words, it means that it
- 11:39it's past it's due. More specifically, it says
- 11:43something that is dry. It speaks of something that is
- 11:47withered. This is not a good description.
- 11:51So whatever this harvest is, it's not being gathered in with
- 11:55joy. It's not being gathered in
- 11:57because there's good use. It's being gathered in to be
- 11:59discarded. Here's what's amazing that word
- 12:03right? In verse 15 is only used in one
- 12:06other place in all of the Book of Revelation.
- 12:10Would you like to know where it is?
- 12:11Go to chapter 16. Look at verse 12, Revelation
- 12:181612. Another vision of another
- 12:21prophecy, but it has a word that's important for us to
- 12:24understand. The 6th Angel.
- 12:26Poured out his bull on the great river Euphrates and its water
- 12:30was dried up. That's the word dried.
- 12:34It's the same word used for ripe in Revelation 1415, dried up to
- 12:39prepare the way for the kings from the East.
- 12:41So when we take all this in consideration, it's very
- 12:44difficult to arrive at the place and thinking that this first
- 12:49harvest in this vision is a good one when the ripeness is more
- 12:54accurately to be understood as rottenness.
- 12:59How can you think that this is the Lord Jesus gathering in the
- 13:02redeemed when they are described in such a way?
- 13:05Does this make sense? So then if John is borrowing
- 13:11from Joel a prophecy about wide scale universal judgement,
- 13:16sickle, harvest, grape overflowing, and if this word
- 13:20ripe actually means something that is dried and withered.
- 13:24No longer of good use. Then what do these two harvests
- 13:27mean? If it's not about the righteous
- 13:31and the wicked, it's not about gathering in the good and
- 13:34judging the evil, what do we have before us?
- 13:38What we have before us is a. Description of judgment in two
- 13:42major phases. That's what we have.
- 13:46What we have here is God's final judgment against the wicked.
- 13:50Occurring just before Christ's return in two massive segments.
- 13:55And that makes more sense when you think about it a little
- 13:58further. Remember how he said Revelation
- 14:0114, especially these verses previews what we're going to
- 14:04find, chapters 15 down through chapters 19.
- 14:07What's in chapters 1516? Primarily the seven bowls of
- 14:11God's wrath. And those bowls will be poured
- 14:15out until Christ himself comes and directly deals with his
- 14:18enemies on the earth. And it seems as though these two
- 14:22harvests are indicating those two major manifestations of
- 14:27God's wrath. In other words, the first
- 14:29harvest could be pointing to the seven bowls.
- 14:32And then the grape harvest right after seems to be paving the way
- 14:36and describing Christ personal confrontation with his foes.
- 14:44This is what seems to be making the most sense here.
- 14:48But that's not where we want to end.
- 14:51What we want to consider, and the rest of this time here
- 14:53together is these two types of harvest in more detail.
- 14:57What do we learn about God through them?
- 15:00How do they speak to our hearts? What message do they convey for
- 15:03our day-to-day lives? And that's how we're going to
- 15:06split our thoughts today. I want us to look at the first
- 15:09harvest reaping and then the second one.
- 15:11The first one again is a preview of the seven bowls that are
- 15:14going to be poured out. And then the second one, which
- 15:16is much more graphic, is it not? Did you notice the imagery here?
- 15:21The grapes being trodden, blood being splattered, a river of
- 15:25blood it seems to be gushing forth.
- 15:28Why is the second one more graphic than the first one?
- 15:31Because as severe as the bold judgments will.
- 15:33Be what Christ is going to do directly is going to be much
- 15:37more intense. Let's reel back here.
- 15:43What can we learn? From the first harvest there are
- 15:48two descriptions here that are interesting.
- 15:53We see one like a Son of Man who is seated on a cloud, and he has
- 15:56a golden crown. Now one, like a Son of Man, only
- 16:01appears in one other place in the Book of Revelation, in the
- 16:04very first chapter, where Jesus is described in his glorified
- 16:08state. And one of the characteristics
- 16:10that he emulates is that he has this golden sash around them and
- 16:14he has this robe and it speaks about His Majesty.
- 16:17And it's in that place in Revelation 113 where we read
- 16:20that one like a son of man is carrying these these garbs.
- 16:25So John is making it very plain here.
- 16:28I I'm referring to to Christ in this vision, the one who is
- 16:31seated 1 like a son of man. That's Jesus.
- 16:33Not just because of Revelation chapter 1, but because of Daniel
- 16:35Chapter 7, where he too saw one like a Son of Man descending
- 16:39with the clouds, approaching the Ancient of Days.
- 16:43Which tells us that John and his prophecies are in total
- 16:46alignment with the old. Prophecies.
- 16:48He is not writing anything new. He's in total alignment with the
- 16:51prophets of old. And more than that, however, it
- 16:59tells us something about Jesus that we often neglect.
- 17:04He is a judge. He is a coming judge.
- 17:10The Lord doesn't want us to skim over this so quickly because He
- 17:12provides these descriptions around Christ's judgement that
- 17:16we have to meditate on. There are three things about
- 17:19Christ being judge and how he judges that we have to face that
- 17:25we have to come to terms with. And the first thing is this.
- 17:28Christ Jesus judges with divine authority that golden crown.
- 17:33Him sitting on that cloud speaks of his divine origin, and it
- 17:37speaks about the divine authority that he possesses now
- 17:40and that he will manifest in the days to come.
- 17:43This is Christ, the one who died.
- 17:46Yes, this is Christ, the one who created the world and the One
- 17:49who upholds the universe with the power of his Word.
- 17:53But this is also Christ who will come and deal with the wicked
- 17:56once and for all. Here's why that's important.
- 18:00You and I are making a very serious mistake.
- 18:02If we're willing to believe in a God who has created the world
- 18:04and save the world, but not judge the world, our God is a
- 18:08judge. He will hold this world
- 18:10accountable. And though in a very broken way,
- 18:14this world is set up where we have mutual accountability.
- 18:17We have judicial systems. What the Bible teaches is all
- 18:21systems in this world are ultimately answerable to God
- 18:25himself. And there's a day coming of
- 18:28reckoning. Now some take issue of this
- 18:30being Jesus because he seems to be taking orders from an Angel.
- 18:34Did you notice that in verse 15? And another Angel came out of
- 18:37the temple, calling with a loud voice to him who sat on the
- 18:40cloud. And so.
- 18:42They do all these gymnastics with who this one like a Son of
- 18:45man is. There's no way that Christ can
- 18:47be taking orders from a created being, even if it's an angelic
- 18:49being. But read your bibles carefully.
- 18:53This is not an Angel speaking from his own authority.
- 18:56Where did the Angel come from? And another Angel came out of
- 19:00the temple. This is the temple in heaven
- 19:02according to the context. So what is this Angel doing?
- 19:05Well, he's coming out of the very place where God's presence
- 19:08dwells. So it seems to suggest that this
- 19:11Angel is relaying a message from God the Father.
- 19:15And we know that throughout the Bible, angels are messengers in
- 19:17many ways. They, they participate in God's
- 19:20Word, even in delivering a message or two.
- 19:23So this Angel is delivering a message from the temple, and the
- 19:26Father is signaling to the Son that the hour of judgement has
- 19:30come. And here's all you need to know
- 19:32at this point. Jesus will judge the world
- 19:35because he has divine authority to do so.
- 19:40But the second way that he judges is with perfect
- 19:43precision. You know, when we look at Christ
- 19:46in the Book of Revelation, there are a lot of things that he
- 19:48holds in his hand symbolically. And now we have something new,
- 19:52something that perhaps we've never thought about.
- 19:54In this vision, Jesus holds a sickle.
- 19:58Have you heard of a sickle? It's a single handed
- 20:02agricultural tool. It has kind of a swoosh.
- 20:04It's like a hook and it's used to harvest or to cut.
- 20:10What moves me though, is that Jesus with this sickle, as
- 20:14strange as that might be, furthermore, is holding a sharp
- 20:20sickle. Why do I need to know it's
- 20:23sharp? In fact, that appears more than
- 20:25once in this vision. Sharp sickle.
- 20:27Sharp sickle because the sharpness indicates something
- 20:31about the effectiveness and the precision of his judgement.
- 20:36Jesus Christ is not dull in his discernment.
- 20:40He's not dull in his perception. He's not dull with his verdicts.
- 20:45Jesus Christ is error free with his justice.
- 20:49He's razor sharp. He's always accurate.
- 20:55He never exaggerates, he never goes overboard.
- 20:59It is surgically precise and how he.
- 21:02Evaluates men's hearts and what he determines concerning their
- 21:06fates, and this is shown throughout the scriptures in so
- 21:10many different ways. One of the.
- 21:12Ways that has ministered me the most as a follower of Jesus
- 21:14Christ is seeing how Christ handles a particular case in the
- 21:19Old Testament. How the Lord appears to Abraham
- 21:24with two angels, and before he judges Sodom and Gomorrah, he
- 21:29decided to actually tell Abraham what he was going to do to.
- 21:32Sodom and Gomorrah and when he explains it to Abraham, he says
- 21:36something that is so insightful about his character as a judge.
- 21:43Genesis 18. Look at this with me in verse
- 21:4820. It says here in Genesis 18,
- 21:59verse 20. Then the Lord said, because the
- 22:03outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin
- 22:08is very grave, I will go down to see whether they have done
- 22:13altogether according to the outcry that has come to me, and
- 22:17if not I will know. You know, when I first read
- 22:22this, it surprised me because this is clearly the Lord
- 22:25speaking to Abraham and he's telling Abraham, hey, I've come
- 22:32down. I've descended upon the earth to
- 22:33actually examine what's going on in these cities to see if they
- 22:38match the outcry that has arisen because of them.
- 22:43I have heard, and I have read of some people who use this text to
- 22:47teach that God can't be all knowing.
- 22:51Why? Because it seems as though he
- 22:53needs to descend into creation and verify the facts at a closer
- 22:58look. Is that what's happening here?
- 23:01Is that what the Bible teaches about God?
- 23:03No, what you have here instead is the Lord graciously revealing
- 23:08something about His character in a way that we would understand,
- 23:13going out of His way to exemplify something so crucial
- 23:17about His nature. And here's what that means.
- 23:19Before executing judgement, he takes great care to gather all
- 23:22the evidence before rendering A verdict.
- 23:27He takes time to investigate in way every matter.
- 23:30That's what he is showing here. It's not that he needs to do it,
- 23:34but he wants to show us what he's willing to do, the length
- 23:38that he's willing to go to, what he is willing to provide in
- 23:42terms of his patients and his his care and his fairness.
- 23:47It's meant to show that he is never cruel or impulsive and how
- 23:51he deals with the wicked. He is precise, He is perceptive,
- 23:56and he is perfectly just the sharp sickle.
- 24:02So we learned that Jesus, according to this vision, judges
- 24:05with divine authority. He judges with perfect
- 24:07precision. And lastly, he does so with
- 24:11incredible patience. Remember that word ripe in
- 24:17Revelation 1415? That's the true condition of the
- 24:21harvest. It's overdue.
- 24:25And though that says something about the wickedness of the
- 24:29generation that Christ will deal with, it also says something
- 24:32about His heart. God waited for the harvest to
- 24:38get to that point. He didn't even wait for it to
- 24:41get ripe. He waited till it became over
- 24:44ripe. What does that tell you about
- 24:47God? That he's not hasty in
- 24:49judgement. He's not quick, He's very slow.
- 24:53He is steadfast. He waits and he waits and he
- 24:57waits, and he convicts and he convicts, and he provides
- 25:01presentation of the gospel after presentation of the gospel.
- 25:07And when you deny, deny, deny, ignore, ignore, ignore,
- 25:10suppress, suppress, suppress, then God.
- 25:15Sees your unwillingness and is willing to act accordingly.
- 25:19And this is true about God for nations, and this is true for
- 25:23God with individuals. Do you remember the seven
- 25:26letters to the churches earlier in this book?
- 25:28One of them was being plagued by a false prophetess whose name
- 25:33was Jezebel, and she was leading the congregation, at least most
- 25:36of them, into sexual immorality. She was teaching them strange
- 25:41things, contrary things to the truth.
- 25:45And God has John write this letter to this church in
- 25:48Thyatira, and he says something so staggering about her in a
- 25:53single verse in Revelation 221. Listen to these words.
- 25:58This is what Jesus says about this woman.
- 26:02I gave her time to repent. I gave her time to repent.
- 26:08Now be honest with yourself. If you were in charge of a
- 26:13church and there was somebody who took control of the
- 26:17leadership, that was false, that was in blatant disobedience to
- 26:22what God designed for the local church, what God wants to be
- 26:24said in the local church, how swift would you be in dealing
- 26:29with the matter? And yet Christ, in his perfect
- 26:36wisdom, in this specific case, I gave her time.
- 26:44We don't know what He did in that time, but this seems to
- 26:47suggest that in that time he warned her, He convicted her, He
- 26:53revealed Himself to her and what happens in the rest of hers.
- 26:56But she refuses to repent of her sexual morality.
- 27:00She refuses. The fact that these seven bulls
- 27:05are going to be poured out is because this final generation of
- 27:10the Tribulation period refused, refused, refused, refused.
- 27:16Can I ask you something today before we move on?
- 27:19Are you rejecting Christ today? How many times have you heard
- 27:23the gospel presentation from this pulpit alone?
- 27:27How many times down deep inside you know, you know that your
- 27:30conscience is ringing because what you're doing, how you're
- 27:33living, is wrong? You haven't surrendered.
- 27:38You haven't. You haven't given up that sin
- 27:40yet. You haven't given your heart to
- 27:42Christ yet. Don't test his patience.
- 27:51Translate. His patience as His great love
- 27:55to you and give yourself to Him. Don't waste any more time
- 28:00because you and I can never determine exactly when Christ
- 28:03will change His mind of how He deals with us in our sin.
- 28:07He judges, judges with incredible patience.
- 28:11So this order of reapings show us that this is how the Lord is
- 28:16actually going to deal with the last group of people on the
- 28:20earth before the 2nd harvesting will take place.
- 28:24And that is going to show Christ's judgement at His
- 28:27coming. You're saying?
- 28:30Is that really what's about to be said in this next harvest?
- 28:33Yes. Let me give you a clue.
- 28:34Can you look at something with me here?
- 28:36Consider this verse in Revelation 14, verse 19.
- 28:40So the Angel swung his sickle across the earth and gathered
- 28:42the grape harvest of the earth and threw it into the great
- 28:46winepress of the wrath of God, and the winepress was trodden
- 28:50outside the city. Fast forward to Revelation 19.
- 28:54Now this is the chapter, at least half of it, that shows us
- 28:58the actual coming of Christ. And notice a similarity between
- 29:02the preview in chapter 14 and the realization in chapter 19.
- 29:06Look at verse 15 of chapter 19. From his mouth comes a sharp
- 29:12sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule
- 29:16them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of
- 29:19the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.
- 29:21Do you see it? Do you see how the first harvest
- 29:25is speaking about the seven bowls?
- 29:27And then this next one that we're about to look at in
- 29:29greater detail speaks about what's going to happen when
- 29:31Christ comes himself. There are so many details from
- 29:39verses 17 down to verse 20. We don't have enough time to
- 29:42look at all of them. So I have a feeling that some
- 29:45may approach me after this and say what about this and what
- 29:47about that? Unless you want to stay here
- 29:49longer. We can look at them.
- 29:50But let's carve out a few key things just with the time that
- 29:55we have left. So the Son of Man who is going
- 30:00to do this reaping is now eclipsed by another Angel in
- 30:05verse 17. Look at this.
- 30:06Then another Angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he.
- 30:09Too had a sharp sickle and another Angel came out from the
- 30:12altar. The Angel has authority over the
- 30:15fire and he called it a loud voice to the one who had the
- 30:18sharp sickle. So you have now 2 angels
- 30:20interacting with one another. Beforehand you had an Angel
- 30:23relaying a message from the Father to the Son.
- 30:26Now you have another Angel who comes out of the temple, and
- 30:28another Angel is coming out of the altar in heaven.
- 30:31Now, what's that all about? Well, we've learned at this
- 30:33point that the altar in Revelation in Heaven signifies
- 30:37the intercession of the Saints. So in one way, what we're about
- 30:42to see with this preview of a judgment.
- 30:45Is God fulfilling the answers to those prayers of the martyrs who
- 30:48said vindicate us, do something with our murders?
- 30:55Who shed all this blood? And this, this little subtle
- 30:59hint is, is a sign for us to see.
- 31:02Jesus is about to answer that. God is about to answer that.
- 31:06But notice that these angels are interacting and saying, listen,
- 31:10put it, put in your sickle and gather the clusters from the
- 31:13vine of the earth for its grapes are ripe.
- 31:16Now the grapes are ripe. The harvest was ripe.
- 31:19And we looked at that original word.
- 31:20It's over ripe, it's dry, it's withered.
- 31:22There's nothing good about it, and the grapes now are ripe.
- 31:27Here's the thing. The word ripe here is not the
- 31:30same as the first one. This word for ripe concerning
- 31:35the grapes actually speaks about ready.
- 31:41They're full. They have reached a point of
- 31:45completion. The normal sense of ripe is
- 31:48what's in view here. Why the difference?
- 31:53Well, obviously to convey a different message.
- 31:56So when it comes to this grape harvest, which speaks about what
- 31:59Christ is going to do with the wicked, it means here that
- 32:02because of humanity in this time has reached the bursting point
- 32:06of wickedness, Christ is going to meet them in that state.
- 32:11Which is an amazing thing to consider.
- 32:14After all the seal judgments, after all the trumpet judgments,
- 32:17after the witnesses and the miracles and the obvious crying
- 32:22out to the loss to be saved, what does this grape harvest
- 32:26teach us? That humanity, experiencing all
- 32:29of that, will only become more and more evil.
- 32:35They're going to grow more and more in the rebellion, that
- 32:39they're becoming more and more vicious and vile and despicable.
- 32:47And what this word right means according to?
- 32:50The judgement it signifies as Jesus is going to say enough is
- 32:53enough. I've given them enough chances,
- 32:57they don't seem to be changing, and so I'm going to harvest them
- 33:02in and discard them from the earth.
- 33:06And this presents a very difficult challenge for those
- 33:08who believe that the world is only going to get better and
- 33:10better before Jesus returns. There are people who believe
- 33:12that. You know, how do you reconcile
- 33:14that notion with this vision? Humanity is only going to swell
- 33:20up more and more in their sin, to the point where it reaches a
- 33:27peak that invites the swift and sudden judgement of Christ
- 33:31Himself. And notice where the grapes came
- 33:36from in verse 18, the second part where the Angel actually
- 33:41speaks. Put in your sickle and gather
- 33:44the clusters from the vine of the earth, for its grapes are
- 33:49ripe vine of the earth. What an interesting way to
- 33:55describe the systems and the philosophies of this world.
- 34:01What is this trying to teach? Well, it shows here that these
- 34:05grapes who speak about the wicked derive their sustenance
- 34:09and life flow from the world as their source.
- 34:17They have attached themselves to the ideologies of this world.
- 34:20They have connected themselves to the ambitions of this
- 34:22unbelieving realm, and they are producing the fruit according to
- 34:28its influence, the vine of the earth.
- 34:33The Lord wants us to make a connection here.
- 34:37There are different vines in the Bible.
- 34:39Did you know? Do you remember what Jesus said
- 34:42of himself in John 15 verse one? I am the true vine and the
- 34:48Father is the vine dresser. I love that because Jesus didn't
- 34:52just say I am a vine, He says I'm the true vine.
- 34:58I am the. True source of life, of
- 35:01sustenance, of the fruit that your soul yearns for.
- 35:06I am the true vine that you must abide in.
- 35:09I'm the true vine that can offer the satisfaction and the joy and
- 35:12the peace and the love and the wholeness that you're craving.
- 35:18Don't link yourself to the vine of the earth.
- 35:21Link yourself to the heavenly one for Christ to to speak in
- 35:26this way. And, and John was the one who
- 35:27wrote it. He wrote John obviously, and
- 35:29he's writing the Book of Revelation.
- 35:35And you and I are the branches. According to John 15 verse five,
- 35:38I'm the vine, you are the branches, and the only way that
- 35:42you can draw out the glories of this vine who is Jesus, is if
- 35:46you abide in him, you allow Him to dwell in your heart, you live
- 35:51for Him, you walk. With him.
- 35:53And here's the question I want to ask in light of this truth in
- 35:56Revelation 14. Which vine are you attached to?
- 36:02Every single one of us in this place and the sound of my voice
- 36:05is attached to 1 Vine. You are drawing out life from
- 36:10one thing or another, and if you're drawing it from Christ,
- 36:15it will show. The way to verify which vine am
- 36:19I linked to is not by verbal confession, it's by the evidence
- 36:23of the fruit in your. Life, it's observable and it's
- 36:28no different if you are attached to the vine of this earth,
- 36:31whether you intend to or not, it's going to show.
- 36:34There's no way around it. But Jesus, never forget this
- 36:38says I'm the true one. I'm the true vine, so the choice
- 36:42is yours. Will I go to the vine of the
- 36:44earth, or like, disconnect from that false cheap substitute and
- 36:49link myself to the true vine? And to reject the true vine is a
- 36:55very foolish choice, because there's a day coming when all
- 36:58who have done the opposite will be gathered into the great
- 37:01winepress of God's wrath. For those who have replaced
- 37:05Christ with something else will be held accountable for it
- 37:11because you are denying God, you're rejecting His will, you
- 37:15are despising His provision, and you are claiming there's
- 37:19something else that can give me what only God himself can grant
- 37:24me. Notice what's going to happen
- 37:30with these grapes that are going to be removed from the vine of
- 37:34the earth. It says here in verse 19.
- 37:38So the Angel swung his sickle across the earth and gathered
- 37:41the grape harvest of the earth and threw it into the great
- 37:44winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trodden.
- 37:50Trodden. What does that mean?
- 37:52Means to step on means to walk on the way.
- 37:58In many places in the world today, grape juice and wine is
- 38:01made where you have these vast you have these.
- 38:05Hewn out stones and you would step on it and it would create
- 38:08the juice. And this is very vivid imagery
- 38:11here. It's actually very graphic that
- 38:15this preview of the judgement that will come when Christ
- 38:17arrives on the scene. Will be like one who is stepping
- 38:21on grapes. The question is who's doing the
- 38:26treading here? And the answer is actually in
- 38:30Isaiah. You know, one of the most famous
- 38:33prophecies of Jesus Christ in Isaiah, Isaiah what, 53 But you
- 38:40know what doesn't get as much attention?
- 38:43Isaiah 63. Isaiah 63 holds the answer of
- 38:48who's doing the treading here in Revelation 14.
- 38:51Look at Isaiah 63. Isaiah gets this astounding
- 39:06glimpse of Messiah in a way that makes a lot of people
- 39:12uncomfortable. Notice what he says in Isaiah 63
- 39:16verse one. Who is this?
- 39:18Who comes from Edom in Crimson garments from Basra.
- 39:23Basra is believed to be the capital of Edom.
- 39:26Edom is located in modern day Jordan, the southern part.
- 39:31But let's read it again. Who is this who comes from Edom
- 39:34in Crimson garments from Basra? He who is splendid in his
- 39:38apparel, marching in the greatness of his strength.
- 39:42It is I speaking in righteousness mighty to save
- 39:48that exclusive language. This is no ordinary man.
- 39:55And Isaiah now has more questions.
- 39:59Verse 2. Why is your apparel red and your
- 40:04garments like his? Who treads in the wine press?
- 40:09Verse three I have trodden the wine press alone and from the
- 40:14people's. No one was with me.
- 40:16I trod them in my anger. I trampled them in my wrath.
- 40:21Their lifeblood spattered on my garments and stained all my
- 40:26apparel. And you look at the context of
- 40:30speaking about the judgment of many peoples.
- 40:34You see what John is doing here Now by the Spirit, he's taking
- 40:38the same kind of description and he applies it to the Lord Jesus.
- 40:45You don't see that clearly in chapter 14.
- 40:46It's in chapter 19 when when Christ actually comes, his
- 40:49garments are stained with blood. Here's what's the most
- 40:55interesting part. Look at verse 4 of Isaiah 63.
- 40:59The Lord is continuing to speak and he says for the day of
- 41:02vengeance was in my heart and my year of redemption had come.
- 41:10Does that bother you? This is Jesus.
- 41:13Do you know what Jesus says? The day of vengeance is in my
- 41:19heart. He's saying wait.
- 41:25I understood Christ's heart way differently than this.
- 41:28You're saying it's in his heart to actually judge?
- 41:32Yes. Why?
- 41:34Because of the second part of verse 4.
- 41:36And my year of redemption had come because by way of
- 41:41judgement, there will be a greater redemption for those
- 41:44that. Belong to Him.
- 41:46The judgement will lead to a greater salvation, will lead to
- 41:50a greater rescue, will bring to completion the salvation that He
- 41:54began at his first coming. And Speaking of his first
- 41:56coming, do you remember which passage Jesus quoted early on in
- 42:03his ministry to authenticate his Messiahship?
- 42:07Well, since you're in Isaiah, just scroll back a couple of
- 42:09chapters in Isaiah 61. You remember this right?
- 42:14And Isaiah 61 verse one. Jesus quoted these verses.
- 42:19What does it say? The Spirit of the Lord God is
- 42:22upon me because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news
- 42:25to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the
- 42:27broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and the
- 42:30opening of the prison to those who are bound.
- 42:32Look at verse 2, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the
- 42:35day of vengeance of our God to comfort all who mourn.
- 42:39Now when you look at when Jesus quotes it in the book of Luke,
- 42:42he stops it at a certain point. He stops it after to proclaim
- 42:47the year of the Lord's favor. Why?
- 42:49Because at his first coming, the day Avengers of our God was not
- 42:53supposed to happen, He closed the book.
- 42:56He closed the scrolls after that first part in chapter 61 verse
- 43:012. Because he's not coming in his
- 43:03first coming to judge. He came to bring salvation.
- 43:08But did you notice something between Isaiah 61 and Isaiah 63?
- 43:14Oh, just look at it again. Look at Isaiah 63, verse four.
- 43:17What does the Lord say there? For the day of vengeance was in
- 43:20my heart, and my year of redemption had come.
- 43:24Did you notice the order difference?
- 43:27Go back to Isaiah 61, verse 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's
- 43:30favor and the day of vengeance of our God.
- 43:33It switched. So in Isaiah 61, what is
- 43:37presented first? The year of the Lord's favor.
- 43:41But in Isaiah 63, what's presented first?
- 43:46The day of vengeance. Isaiah 61 speaks of Christ's
- 43:50first coming. Isaiah 63 speaks of Christ's
- 43:52second coming. When he comes again, it's with
- 43:57vengeance. When he comes again, it's going
- 44:01to be to judge, not to save, not to die for sin again, but to
- 44:05deal with sinners once and for all.
- 44:09And through the day of vengeance, the year of
- 44:12redemption will come. But notice again, yes, the day
- 44:16Avengers is in his heart, but look how?
- 44:18Look how precise the Holy Spirit is in both cases, Isaiah 61 and
- 44:22Isaiah 63. When it comes to the vengeance,
- 44:26it's a day. When it comes to redemption and
- 44:28salvation, it's a year. Did you notice that He's much
- 44:35more excited and much more longing to save than to judge?
- 44:38Yes, it's in his heart, but the reason why it's in his heart is
- 44:41because that day needs to come for the year of redemption to be
- 44:44experienced. So Christ ultimately wants to
- 44:49save. He he wants none to perish, none
- 44:53to experience his holy wrath but his holy love, his embrace, his
- 44:59compassion, his salvation. But.
- 45:05There will be many who will refuse.
- 45:09Now, everything that we've seen up to this point in Revelation
- 45:1114 is highly symbolic, right? I mean, it's almost a mix.
- 45:16But I don't think we need to understand Christ sitting in
- 45:19heaven with an actual sickle. It's something that we need to
- 45:23fight for to be totally literal. It's it's symbolic imagery.
- 45:28And yet, with all the symbolism, there's something quite literal
- 45:33about the last part of Revelation 14.
- 45:36Let's go there and end our time together.
- 45:38Look at verse 20. And the winepress was trodden
- 45:43outside the city. What city?
- 45:48Jerusalem. Why?
- 45:52Because there's Old Testament prophecies and New Testament
- 45:55clues that show that Christ is coming specifically to Israel.
- 46:04And more than that, look at this description.
- 46:06And blood flowed from the winepress as high as a horse's
- 46:10bridle for 1600 stadia, a horse's bridle talking about
- 46:16that instrument by the horse's mouth, you're, you're looking at
- 46:19something about four to five feet from the ground.
- 46:25So when this judgement is actually realized, whom we know
- 46:30to be Christ issuing it, the result of it will be from just
- 46:37the face value, a river of blood 4 feet deep for how long and how
- 46:42wide? According to 1600 Stadium, if
- 46:44you translate that in miles, you're looking at 180 something
- 46:47miles. Now this is this is really
- 46:51confounded people. It seems incomprehensible.
- 46:54You're telling me that there's going to be so much bloodshed
- 46:57that you can essentially swim in that blood for miles upon miles?
- 47:05One, that suggests that whenever Christ does come, there's going
- 47:10to be a lot of people there who are going to try to face him.
- 47:15And we're preparing for that in Revelation 16, where all the
- 47:18nations are going to be led by demonic spirits to come to
- 47:21Armageddon, north of Jerusalem. But when you consider these
- 47:27other prophecies, like Isaiah 63, it seems as though the
- 47:31masses of the allies against Christ will be so grand that it
- 47:35might even reach down to Basra. It might even spill over into
- 47:41Jordan and they will surround this holy city to one try to
- 47:49Vanquish the Jewish people. And more than that, the Jewish
- 47:53Messiah. So is this actually going to be
- 47:59a deep, long river of blood? We don't know.
- 48:03It could be that he's speaking about the blood splattering up
- 48:05to the bridles of horses. It could even be speaking about
- 48:08the bodies piled up that high. But one thing is for certain,
- 48:17when Christ came the first time, he actually came into this world
- 48:21to die and to raise from the grave.
- 48:24And when Christ comes the second time, we're not talking about
- 48:27some invisible return. We're not talking about some
- 48:31spiritual advent. We're talking about a real
- 48:34bodily return of Christ. Who's going to deal with real
- 48:37people with real judgment? Do you know Jesus Christ today?
- 48:48I know this isn't a popular message, but I am tethered to
- 48:53this word. I will be held accountable and
- 49:00every preacher too, who dares to get up on a pulpit and say, Thus
- 49:03says the Lord, and here's what I'm bound to say.
- 49:07According to the scriptures, judgement is coming.
- 49:12Sinners will be judged, and those who have not placed their
- 49:15faith in Christ will be harvested in to be trampled upon
- 49:21by the Holy Son of God. But here's what I want to tell
- 49:25you also. The same one who has a sickle on
- 49:27his hand, with those same hands were pierced, And the same one
- 49:33who will use his feet to trample on his enemies, were put
- 49:36together and nailed to a cross. And the same one who has a
- 49:40golden crown in this vision took upon himself a crown of thorns.
- 49:45He suffered under God's wrath. He took and absorbed the fury of
- 49:49the Holy One for you, for you, for every single one of us here
- 49:55in this place, no matter how gross and disgusting your sin
- 49:58may be, no matter how hideous your past looks like Jesus
- 50:03Christ knows it all. And because of His Holiness,
- 50:07there is a day of vengeance. But I want to let you know what
- 50:09makes his heart really beat. And that is your salvation, your
- 50:13redemption, your renewal. And listen, this is the hour of
- 50:18salvation. Today is the day, now is the
- 50:21time we're looking at what's ultimately going to come.
- 50:24But we have this window of grace and I make this appeal to you on
- 50:28the Sunday afternoon, Come to Christ, come to Jesus.
- 50:33Listen, I'm talking about a real Savior here.
- 50:37What what are we doing here? What do you do?
- 50:40You think we just, let's just look at another lesson today.
- 50:42And this isn't tradition, This is God's word telling us about a
- 50:48real God who's going to do real things in this world.
- 50:53So I want to let you know that this isn't a game.
- 50:56This isn't a social club with a little bit of religion sprinkled
- 50:58on it. This is a matter of life and
- 51:00death. This is a matter of eternity.
- 51:04I believe with all my heart. Because I believe this book that
- 51:07there's a real judgement coming. I don't want you to experience
- 51:12it. You can be delivered from it.
- 51:16Oh, I pray that you would take this seriously.
- 51:18I pray that you would realize that this is indeed true.
- 51:21And if it is true, what are you going to do about it?
- 51:25Just sit there and think about lunch.
- 51:31Come to Christ today before it's too late.
- 51:35Bend your knee, receive Him. And I can give you the absolute
- 51:38assurance, based on the authority of this word, that if
- 51:40you are sincere in your repentance.
- 51:42You will know not a flow of judgement, a flow of love that
- 51:46you've never experienced before, that this holy, brilliant, pure
- 51:50being is more amazing in His love than you've ever
- 51:57experienced in this life. And that's what He wants to
- 52:01offer you today. His heart and love come to
- 52:06Christ. Let's pray.
- 52:16Lord, we thank you that your word is true.
- 52:28And Lord, in your presence we declare that we are not
- 52:31embarrassed about your word. We're not ashamed of it.
- 52:37In a world so filled with lies and confusion and deception,
- 52:44make us more bold about the truth than ever.
- 52:47Your word has never failed. And Lord, at this moment, you've
- 52:52given us a text about judgement. We will not downplay it.
- 52:57We will not ignore it. We will not skip over it.
- 53:00We will come to terms with it. And Lord number one, we want to
- 53:04thank you that you've saved us from our sin.
- 53:07Thank You that because of Christ we are no longer objects of your
- 53:10wrath, but we are adopted as children forever.
- 53:14But Lord, that is not true for 1,000,000 today.
- 53:17And we ask, Lord, that in this place that if there's anybody
- 53:20who does not have the absolute confidence that they are saved,
- 53:24that they would not be so foolish or stubborn to deny the
- 53:27free gift of salvation. That they would realize that
- 53:31you've died for them and that they would give themselves to
- 53:34this truth, that they would receive your love.
- 53:38So Lord, we pray as we've done what we can in the service.
- 53:42We've sung the songs and we've preached the message, and we've
- 53:45given Scripture quotation after Scripture quotation.
- 53:48But only you can convict. Only you can touch the heart,
- 53:52Lord, and we admit that gladly. So, Lord, move freely in this
- 53:56place and bring more into the harvest of righteousness.
- 54:00Bring more into the fold of God through your love.
- 54:04We give you thanks Lord, and help us be ambitious to be
- 54:08ambassadors to those who only have judgment to look forward to
- 54:13if they don't give their lives to Christ.
- 54:15We ask these things in Jesus name, Amen.
- 54:18Amen. Let's stand together.
- 54:27God is so real that at any point in this service moving forward,
- 54:31if you, if you were to just speak to him, he hears you, even
- 54:37if you don't sing these songs right now and you sit in your
- 54:39seat, you sit in that Pew and you say, Lord, I just, I need to
- 54:42be saved. Forgive me.
- 54:44God will hear that prayer. And believer, I hope your song
- 54:48will be strong at this point because you were reminded today
- 54:52of what you were saved from. You have heaven, you have
- 54:57eternal life because of Christ. Let's sing about it together.
