Latest / Foul Territory / FT Live @ Winter Meetings Day 3: Ken Rosenthal & Jim Duquette's take on Pete Alonso deal + more reports
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Inside Scoop time with e FT senior insider Ken Rosenthals
- 0:08Speaker 1: for wrapping up the winter meetings in Orlando.
- 0:10Speaker 2: You know what's funny, I just thought of this.
- 0:11Speaker 1: The most talked about team is a team that actually
- 0:13Speaker 1: hasn't done anything, and it's the Mets.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it's true, and they've done Devin Williams right before
- 0:20Speaker 3: it was here, by the way, but well, yeah I
- 0:22Speaker 3: saw last night, but before this, not during this stretch. No,
- 0:25Speaker 3: you're right, and certainly the Mets are going to be
- 0:28Speaker 3: the talking point of the sport right now. I just
- 0:31Speaker 3: got done writing about them and all this is well
- 0:35Speaker 3: and good. Do you want to lose these guys? Okay,
- 0:38Speaker 3: but you have to have answers, and I'm not necessarily
- 0:42Speaker 3: seeing what those answers are going to be. And I'm
- 0:44Speaker 3: sure David Stearns has some kind of plan. They're not
- 0:48Speaker 3: talking much about what they're gonna do. That's fine, but
- 0:52Speaker 3: they need to outfielders, they need starting pitching, and they
- 0:56Speaker 3: don't want to play long term on the big time
- 0:58Speaker 3: starting pitchers were and free agency, which I understand. Those
- 1:02Speaker 3: guys have questions. And now they have a closer, Devin Williams,
- 1:06Speaker 3: who will not have a safety net in Edwin Diaz,
- 1:09Speaker 3: so you're gonna need to be busy. I'm sure they
- 1:12Speaker 3: know that. They obviously know that. But the way I
- 1:16Speaker 3: wrote the column was, if you're a Mets fan right now,
- 1:19Speaker 3: the irrational side is winning.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Is has thing true about not calling him about Devin Williams,
- 1:25Speaker 4: and then therefore he got his feelings, which I totally
- 1:28Speaker 4: understand because he's been there.
- 1:30Speaker 5: Yeah, he's a star.
- 1:31Speaker 4: He is a star of the new when they play
- 1:32Speaker 4: the trumpets, he's the man coming out of there and
- 1:35Speaker 4: he's done in the biggest stages. So is that a
- 1:38Speaker 4: true thing that led to him then going to the Dodgers.
- 1:41Speaker 4: I don't know that that alone, well, it adds up.
- 1:44Speaker 4: As a player, you want to be respectful. That's where
- 1:46Speaker 4: I'm going ages.
- 1:47Speaker 5: Especially a guy that has been there, done that.
- 1:49Speaker 3: That was one element their offers, I'm sure were another element.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Jeremy Heffner leaving Edwin di has had a good relationship
- 1:56Speaker 3: with him. All of that adds up, as you said,
- 2:00Speaker 3: and players they want a certain respect shown to them,
- 2:06Speaker 3: especially someone like DS who meant so much to the
- 2:09Speaker 3: franchise from what I've heard, and it's not just with
- 2:13Speaker 3: the failure to call him and inform him. With Devin Williams,
- 2:17Speaker 3: it was overall from when I've heard that respect he
- 2:21Speaker 3: didn't feel was shown to them.
- 2:22Speaker 4: By the way, has anyone done a proof of life
- 2:24Speaker 4: on Mendy Carlos Mendoza, I saw him yesterday, but today.
- 2:28Speaker 5: Now Alonzo's gone.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Has anyone has anyone seen or heard from Mendy because
- 2:32Speaker 4: he's gonna have to put all this together. I mean, yes,
- 2:33Speaker 4: David Searns, but if they don't do what they need
- 2:35Speaker 4: to do, it all falls on him, not David Sterns.
- 2:38Speaker 3: And you know what, guys, it's going to be a
- 2:41Speaker 3: different kind of team obviously. They also made the Semian move.
- 2:44Speaker 3: They acquired a thirty six year old second baseman who
- 2:47Speaker 3: was in offensive decline and I know what they're saying
- 2:51Speaker 3: about run prevention, and Pete Alonso is not the best
- 2:54Speaker 3: defensive first baseman. I don't think the Orioles cared all
- 2:57Speaker 3: that much about it because they see him as a
- 3:01Speaker 3: game changer in their lineup, and he is for them.
- 3:04Speaker 3: This is a huge move for Baltimore and the Mets
- 3:08Speaker 3: just didn't see it that way. I understand no player
- 3:12Speaker 3: is perfect, but man, Peter Lonzo brought an awful lot
- 3:15Speaker 3: and like Nimo, like Diaz, he proved he could play
- 3:21Speaker 3: in the New York pressure cooker. Not a small thing.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Marcus Simeon hasn't done that. Devin Williams has done it
- 3:27Speaker 3: to an extent, but he had mixed results this year,
- 3:29Speaker 3: So fucked in them. They're gonna have a lot to
- 3:33Speaker 3: do and it's not gonna be an easy puzzle.
- 3:36Speaker 2: To put back together.
- 3:37Speaker 1: What about the puzzle that the Orioles are trying to
- 3:39Speaker 1: put back together?
- 3:40Speaker 2: Line up looking nice now. They still have a lot
- 3:43Speaker 2: of work.
- 3:43Speaker 3: To do on the page side. They will be active
- 3:45Speaker 3: on starting pitching. I recorded yesterday with Will Salmon that
- 3:48Speaker 3: they've been talking to the Marlins about Edward Cabrera. They're
- 3:51Speaker 3: also talking about other trades. There have been published reports
- 3:54Speaker 3: linking them to Mackenzie Gore and they are also involved
- 3:57Speaker 3: in Ranger of Suarez and at the top of the
- 3:59Speaker 3: free agent at Market Valdez as well. So this is
- 4:03Speaker 3: not it for them, but the breadth of what they
- 4:06Speaker 3: have done so far is somewhat astonishing. Starts with Leoti
- 4:11Speaker 3: Tavares Andrew Kittridge. They trade for him, then they exercise
- 4:14Speaker 3: his option. Ryan Helsley, they trade for Taylor Ward and
- 4:18Speaker 3: now Pete Alonso. That's the team that is doing things.
- 4:23Speaker 3: That is a team that finished last last season and
- 4:26Speaker 3: said not good enough. And it's also an ownership much
- 4:30Speaker 3: different than Steve Cohen, of course, but an ownership that,
- 4:34Speaker 3: while operating in a mid market, is stepping up and
- 4:37Speaker 3: saying it's time, let's go. We gotta get going here.
- 4:40Speaker 3: And they are impressively putting a team together.
- 4:44Speaker 5: I love. Yeah, we bang on them all the time.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Finally Gill get him, go here we go.
- 4:49Speaker 3: And you know what, too, there's always a question with
- 4:51Speaker 3: a team like that. Cincinnati's facing this, Pittsburgh's facing this,
- 4:56Speaker 3: can they actually get the guy? And the Oriols, of course,
- 4:59Speaker 3: they bid the the same amount for Schwarber that the
- 5:01Speaker 3: Phillies did, but the Phillies were given the right to match,
- 5:03Speaker 3: it seems, and just did that. But here are the
- 5:07Speaker 3: Orioles and they were in there against the Red Sox,
- 5:10Speaker 3: they were in there against well, I guess the Mets
- 5:12Speaker 3: didn't really did, but they won. And that's what you
- 5:16Speaker 3: have to do in free agency to get the player,
- 5:18Speaker 3: you have to win.
- 5:19Speaker 5: We all know.
- 5:19Speaker 3: It always sounds great the first day and who knows
- 5:22Speaker 3: how this will work out. But Peter Alonso's thirty one.
- 5:25Speaker 3: It's not gonna stop hitting anytime soon in my estimation.
- 5:28Speaker 3: So it's a huge day for the Orioles, huge day
- 5:32Speaker 3: for kind of continuing the revival in that city of baseball,
- 5:37Speaker 3: which took a little bit of a step back last year.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Nothing has actually happened with the trademarket, and.
- 5:43Speaker 4: That's gonna I was gonna say who won the Winter
- 5:45Speaker 4: Meetings because every year we have offseason winners only.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Three moves, I mean, there's a few others.
- 5:50Speaker 4: He knows more of the insider what he thinks is
- 5:52Speaker 4: gonna happen down the road. Who do you think is
- 5:55Speaker 4: maybe set themselves up?
- 5:57Speaker 3: Will the Ools for sure set themselves up?
- 5:59Speaker 6: Well?
- 5:59Speaker 3: Yes, and aj not to cop out, but too early
- 6:04Speaker 3: to pass judge. And that's the one thing with the Mets,
- 6:08Speaker 3: what they've done so far is curious, to say the least.
- 6:12Speaker 3: But it's December tenth, it's not February tenth, and there's
- 6:16Speaker 3: plenty of time. I just don't see the options being
- 6:19Speaker 3: that great. For example, Peter Alonso is one of the
- 6:24Speaker 3: great right handed hitters in the sport. He hit behind
- 6:26Speaker 3: Juan Soto, one of the great left handed hitters in
- 6:28Speaker 3: the sport. Who is going to fill that spot? The
- 6:31Speaker 3: two top free agents, Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker are
- 6:34Speaker 3: both left handed. The Mets show no inclination that they're
- 6:36Speaker 3: going to sign either anyway. Who is the right handed
- 6:39Speaker 3: bat behind?
- 6:42Speaker 7: So I don't know.
- 6:45Speaker 3: I guess those guys should be six to seven in
- 6:52Speaker 3: the lineup, you know, could be a trade, could be
- 6:55Speaker 3: a trade. But again, one of the reasons the Ools
- 6:59Speaker 3: jumped on Taylor was the lack of right handed hitting outfielders.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Maybe they signed Harrison Vader back the Mets. I don't know,
- 7:05Speaker 3: but he's not a protection guy. And good luck trading
- 7:11Speaker 3: for a right handed slugger.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Simeon not that guy anymore.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Have seven hundred ops the last two years.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Hey, we talked about this twenty minutes ago. I was
- 7:21Speaker 1: reading some parts from your notes column the Braves, Remember
- 7:25Speaker 1: the Braves. What are they going to do this offseason?
- 7:28Speaker 1: I know you wrote a little bit about some prying
- 7:30Speaker 1: into relievers.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Yes they're on relievers, and Robert Suarez is one, but
- 7:35Speaker 3: there's competition for him. And it's the other thing with
- 7:37Speaker 3: the Mets. By the way, they face competition for all
- 7:39Speaker 3: these players. Most of the teams are trying, so that's
- 7:42Speaker 3: a problem in addition to everything else. But the Braves
- 7:46Speaker 3: they want another reliever, they want a starter, and they
- 7:49Speaker 3: want to if possible, continue upgrading at shortstop so they
- 7:53Speaker 3: could play Dubon all over the field. Now, hash On Kim,
- 7:57Speaker 3: we haven't heard much about him. He's still out there.
- 8:00Speaker 3: The Braves of course acquired him for the last stretch
- 8:03Speaker 3: of the season to get to know him. He becomes
- 8:05Speaker 3: a free agent, of course, which is his writ and
- 8:07Speaker 3: which I think was their expectation. But he's a guy
- 8:11Speaker 3: that if his market doesn't develop, and there are teams
- 8:14Speaker 3: that could use him besides the Atlanta Braves, obviously they
- 8:17Speaker 3: would love him to come back.
- 8:20Speaker 5: By the way, you know, you said six to seven, right,
- 8:22Speaker 5: six seven?
- 8:23Speaker 2: There you go, perfect.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I'm with the cool kids.
- 8:26Speaker 5: I know the shot is like Ken said, sixty seven,
- 8:30Speaker 5: which is great.
- 8:31Speaker 4: But one of our friends, one of our colleagues, a
- 8:34Speaker 4: guy you worked with much more than me, won the
- 8:36Speaker 4: Frick Award was Frick. It was the Frick Award, Fortsy
- 8:38Speaker 4: Frick Award. Joe Buck one of the best dudes I know.
- 8:42Speaker 4: People bash him He's one of the best dudes I
- 8:44Speaker 4: know in the world. Always gets back to you. We'll
- 8:46Speaker 4: do whatever, give you anything you want. One of the
- 8:48Speaker 4: greatest guys in the world, one of the best sports announcers, baseball, football,
- 8:52Speaker 4: any sport he can do. One of my favorite people
- 8:54Speaker 4: I've ever met. I want your thoughts on him getting
- 8:57Speaker 4: into the Hall of Fame.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I was thrilled to see this. And I work with him,
- 9:00Speaker 3: I believe, maybe fifteen years at Fox.
- 9:03Speaker 5: And.
- 9:05Speaker 3: I know what people say, Oh, is this he's that
- 9:09Speaker 3: the guy called twenty four World Series. He didn't call
- 9:12Speaker 3: twenty four World Series because he sucks, Okay, he did
- 9:16Speaker 3: because he is the best at his craft. And I
- 9:20Speaker 3: was privileged to be part of that team that he
- 9:23Speaker 3: was leading. Obviously, as far as the broadcast and AJ
- 9:27Speaker 3: I'll tell you this one story because it showed me
- 9:29Speaker 3: how gifted he was, and it was such a subtle
- 9:33Speaker 3: thing that I'm sure no one noticed. Two thousand and nine, ALCS,
- 9:37Speaker 3: I believe the Yankees and Angels are playing. The Yankees
- 9:42Speaker 3: are kind of putting the series away a little bit
- 9:46Speaker 3: and Tim mccarvert I get this conversation on Airbell looking
- 9:50Speaker 3: ahead to the next series Joe pulls it back to
- 9:53Speaker 3: the game in a way that was so masterful, so easy,
- 9:59Speaker 3: and yet the view the listener would not have even
- 10:01Speaker 3: known what had happened. And he has amazing gift, Great
- 10:06Speaker 3: on the big moments, great in every aspect of broadcasting.
- 10:09Speaker 3: He is, I believe now in both the Baseball and
- 10:12Speaker 3: football Hall of Fames again, that guy who is that
- 10:17Speaker 3: two Hall of Fames. I don't think he sucks. He's
- 10:21Speaker 3: pretty dawn good, all time greats.
- 10:24Speaker 2: He's a legend, and he makes every event feel bigger.
- 10:28Speaker 3: That's right, and that's why ESPN wanted him, because he
- 10:31Speaker 3: elevated them.
- 10:32Speaker 5: And does this mean he's coming back into a baseball
- 10:34Speaker 5: again though he.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Sure doesn't sound like he really wants to do that.
- 10:38Speaker 4: I don't know big events deal, Yeah, I know, I
- 10:42Speaker 4: know they got some special games.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Here and there. I would think he might do it,
- 10:47Speaker 3: But he's doing pretty well.
- 10:52Speaker 2: It's tough to do multiple sports. A lot of guys
- 10:54Speaker 2: do it, but it is also multiple still on.
- 10:56Speaker 3: A personal level, before I started Fox on the broadcast
- 11:01Speaker 3: in two thousand and six, they had not had a
- 11:05Speaker 3: print person be a sideline reporter and Joe and Tim,
- 11:10Speaker 3: they didn't have to agree to that. They didn't have
- 11:12Speaker 3: to accept that, and yet not only did both of
- 11:15Speaker 3: them do it, and they both have now won Frick Awards.
- 11:18Speaker 3: They accepted me, they brought me in, they made me
- 11:20Speaker 3: feel part of it, and I'm forever in debt to
- 11:23Speaker 3: both those guys.
- 11:24Speaker 4: I love both those guys the same thing you told
- 11:26Speaker 4: me you were talking about Joe and Tim.
- 11:28Speaker 5: We were recently at Tim.
- 11:29Speaker 4: It was a few years ago Tim mccarver's celebration of
- 11:32Speaker 4: life in Saint Louis. I get a call from Bob costas,
- 11:35Speaker 4: can you come speak at Tim mccarver's celebrational life if
- 11:38Speaker 4: you know the family would like you to speak U
- 11:40Speaker 4: And I'm like, well, I knew Tim, and I didn't
- 11:41Speaker 4: know Tim like as well as y'all did, but we
- 11:43Speaker 4: had a relationship and I'll never get Bob Costa says, hey,
- 11:48Speaker 4: can you speak? And I go, well, where you know
- 11:49Speaker 4: what am I saying? Just tell stories about Tim Da
- 11:52Speaker 4: da da And I said, well, who am I speaking between?
- 11:55Speaker 4: He's like, well, between me and Joe Buck. And I'm
- 11:57Speaker 4: like wait a second here, Bob cost is me and
- 12:00Speaker 4: and then Joe Buck. And then you were there and
- 12:01Speaker 4: you saw it was there and I and I did
- 12:03Speaker 4: my whole little thing and told some funny to McCarver
- 12:06Speaker 4: and then the best was Joe followed me and he
- 12:08Speaker 4: weaved what I said into what he was saying. And
- 12:11Speaker 4: I was like, Okay, this dude is just the best,
- 12:13Speaker 4: and like made it so good.
- 12:15Speaker 3: He was inducted into a third Hall of Fame, the
- 12:17Speaker 3: National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame. I was there
- 12:20Speaker 3: for that, and this was in North Carolina. His speech,
- 12:24Speaker 3: it was so hilarious. This guy is one of the
- 12:26Speaker 3: funniest people I know. And he's self deprecating, he's humble,
- 12:30Speaker 3: he knows he take He took all the criticism because
- 12:33Speaker 3: of his father, and he's following his father. It's nepotism.
- 12:36Speaker 3: He attacks it head on. He will tell people I'm
- 12:40Speaker 3: a nepo baby, and I'm proud of it. And man,
- 12:44Speaker 3: I'm sure his dad right now is looking down at
- 12:47Speaker 3: his son and saying, man.
- 12:49Speaker 4: In twenty years of the day, don't forget the ninety
- 12:51Speaker 4: one Kirby Bucket game six Cardinals.
- 12:54Speaker 3: That's my call.
- 12:56Speaker 4: So do you know that we had a conversation before
- 12:58Speaker 4: the game about that. I don't know if you were
- 12:59Speaker 4: in the car with us. That was my first ever
- 13:02Speaker 4: thing with Fox. And I said, Joe, you know, it's
- 13:04Speaker 4: twenty year anniversary. And he knew obviously, and I said,
- 13:07Speaker 4: you know, if Cardinals hit a walk off, you got
- 13:09Speaker 4: to do it.
- 13:09Speaker 5: He's like, oh, trust me, we've I've thought about it already.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Oh really And then and then David Frees hit the
- 13:14Speaker 4: home run and we'll see you tomorrow night.
- 13:16Speaker 5: And this is how good he was though at like
- 13:18Speaker 5: forward thinking about.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Yeah, he was just a master.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Is a master. Yeah. I still can't talk about Yes.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Yeah, congratulates the second winner after Vince Scully.
- 13:30Speaker 5: Wow.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Wow, I didn't know that. Well, we'll get him on.
- 13:34Speaker 1: We'll talk about it, Ken, we'll talk to you, or
- 13:36Speaker 1: we'll hear.
- 13:36Speaker 5: From my wife, you know.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Oh well, I can just talk about Hoyns old Day too.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Oh yeah. But he also is going.
- 13:42Speaker 3: In BBWAA winner. Longtime beat writer for the Cleveland Plain
- 13:47Speaker 3: Deals since nineteen eighty three, and he's seen it all
- 13:51Speaker 3: from Municipal Stadium to Jacob's Field to Progressive Field. Now.
- 13:56Speaker 3: He's covered all kinds of teams, good, bad, so ugly.
- 13:59Speaker 3: He is beloved among the baseball writers and when he
- 14:02Speaker 3: got in yesterday we were all just laughing and thrilled.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Is just a fun loving guy on top of everything else.
- 14:10Speaker 3: And yeah, Hoynsey and Joe Buck, it's quite a pair.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:14Speaker 1: We saw great tweets from a lot of the BBWA members,
- 14:18Speaker 1: you know, sharing how happy they were for for Hoynese
- 14:20Speaker 1: and he's there and you all get to see it
- 14:22Speaker 1: in the room.
- 14:23Speaker 2: That's very cool, taking a tour of all of the.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Past suites that Jim Jucatt has spent time in as
- 14:36Speaker 1: he joins us right now, Duke, good to see you
- 14:40Speaker 1: and there's a big crowd for you today. Yeah, yeah,
- 14:43Speaker 1: we brought them in. Yeah, you're the man of the hour.
- 14:47Speaker 1: You know why Yeah, because you worked in the front
- 14:50Speaker 1: office GM, both with Baltimore and with the New York Mets.
- 14:55Speaker 6: These are my two teams right here.
- 14:56Speaker 8: Yes, I've been getting hit up by a lot more
- 15:00Speaker 8: Baltimore fans and a ton of upset Mets fans, not
- 15:05Speaker 8: just because of love Alonzo, but Diaz, Yes, does this happen?
- 15:08Speaker 5: Can you believe this? But it's unbelievable.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Like as happy we'll get to the Orioles, as happy
- 15:14Speaker 4: as they are, but this to me is more of
- 15:15Speaker 4: a met story and David Stern saying we tried with
- 15:18Speaker 4: this core group, Nemo gone, Dias gone.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Alonso gone. How does this happen?
- 15:23Speaker 4: Is this just David Curtin saying I'm doing it my
- 15:26Speaker 4: own way and I don't care about money because we
- 15:28Speaker 4: still have Soto, we still have Lindor, and we still
- 15:30Speaker 4: have other big contracts.
- 15:31Speaker 8: It's hard for me to imagine that the plan at
- 15:35Speaker 8: the end of the season is disappointing as it was
- 15:37Speaker 8: and embarrassing as it was that your plan was, well,
- 15:40Speaker 8: we're gonna get better next year and it's not gonna
- 15:42Speaker 8: include Brandon, Nemo, Pete, Alonzo, Edwin Diaz.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Like.
- 15:45Speaker 8: That doesn't That doesn't resonate with me. That doesn't make
- 15:47Speaker 8: any sense. But I think you know, when you look
- 15:50Speaker 8: at it in its entirety, when you talk about it
- 15:52Speaker 8: in silos, and you just think, okay, you know, from
- 15:54Speaker 8: a business side, Okay, maybe maybe Nemo is starting to
- 15:57Speaker 8: age a little bit. Okay, Diaz, maybe you didn't want
- 15:59Speaker 8: to go to three years, which I don't get. But
- 16:01Speaker 8: maybe you didn't want to.
- 16:02Speaker 5: Go to three years.
- 16:03Speaker 8: Oh maybe you didn't want to go more than three
- 16:04Speaker 8: years to pee. So there's each individually wrapped. You go, Okay,
- 16:09Speaker 8: I understand that angle, But when you have this much
- 16:11Speaker 8: change and you know, influx with your team, how are
- 16:14Speaker 8: you gonna unravel this? How are you gonna how are
- 16:16Speaker 8: you gonna improve? And and does your fan base believe you?
- 16:20Speaker 6: That's the other thing.
- 16:20Speaker 8: There's a believability factor or lack of credibility right now
- 16:25Speaker 8: because of how upset they are about losing two iconic
- 16:29Speaker 8: homegrown Mets players.
- 16:30Speaker 6: These guys are homegrown, not any good players, but homegrown.
- 16:33Speaker 6: So I think there's a huge, huge.
- 16:35Speaker 8: You know, PR issue that you'd have to have your
- 16:37Speaker 8: head in the sand to not understand or believe. And
- 16:42Speaker 8: they like, the next moves better be good, you know,
- 16:45Speaker 8: and and they better be like impactful. And that's where
- 16:48Speaker 8: I'm still not sure they're gonna go impactful going forward.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I got one for you in your ear, crats.
- 16:56Speaker 7: Do they I mean the move the moves? It wasn't
- 16:58Speaker 7: just like you're not talking about just PR guys. You're
- 17:01Speaker 7: talking about the dude who led the team in homers.
- 17:04Speaker 7: You're talking about the dude that led the team and
- 17:06Speaker 7: saves for the last however many years? Is there do
- 17:09Speaker 7: you see a way like you mentioned it like it's
- 17:13Speaker 7: hard to say, Okay, we're gonna unravel this. Do you
- 17:16Speaker 7: see a way that David Sterns unravels this or is
- 17:19Speaker 7: this the beginning of the end for his approach to
- 17:22Speaker 7: the way this team's gonna win because it didn't work
- 17:25Speaker 7: last year with the starting staff that he assembled.
- 17:28Speaker 6: Right, you know, I think that you know, the starters,
- 17:30Speaker 6: let's start just there. I mean, he doesn.
- 17:32Speaker 8: Want to give up any long term deal, give out
- 17:34Speaker 8: any long term deals right to starting pitchers. Okay, well,
- 17:37Speaker 8: you know, I think the way the market is playing
- 17:40Speaker 8: itself out is kind of looking like it might come
- 17:42Speaker 8: in like fall into his hands. If if you look
- 17:44Speaker 8: like a Michael King, sounds like no more than four
- 17:47Speaker 8: years or three years, you know, if you look at Valdez,
- 17:50Speaker 8: sounds like he's having a harder time getting six or seven.
- 17:53Speaker 8: I don't get the sense though the Mets are on Valdez,
- 17:55Speaker 8: but you know, I think that uh, you know, Zach
- 17:58Speaker 8: Gallon still a mix in the but we haven't really
- 18:00Speaker 8: heard it. There's a certainly trade potential that I could
- 18:03Speaker 8: see happening there with the Mets because they have a
- 18:06Speaker 8: host of prospects that you know, strong prospects capital that
- 18:09Speaker 8: he's willing to part with. But you know it's still
- 18:13Speaker 8: right now you kind of start with that starting rotation. Now,
- 18:15Speaker 8: how are you going to improve on the position players? Like,
- 18:17Speaker 8: if you're not going to go after Tucker or Bashett
- 18:20Speaker 8: you know, and I don't think Bashette fits, but Tucker
- 18:22Speaker 8: certainly does. You know, what else are you going to
- 18:24Speaker 8: do to improve the offense because you lost two significant
- 18:26Speaker 8: offensive pieces?
- 18:28Speaker 5: Agreed? Agreed. Right now, we've hit the Mets.
- 18:30Speaker 4: We've kind of, I don't want to say blasted the Mets,
- 18:33Speaker 4: but we're more surprised on what the Mets off season
- 18:35Speaker 4: so far has been.
- 18:36Speaker 5: Sure, now let's go to the Orioles.
- 18:38Speaker 4: They just picked up a forty plus home run guy,
- 18:40Speaker 4: a guy who plays one hundred and fifty to one
- 18:42Speaker 4: hundred and sixty two games a year. It's a great
- 18:44Speaker 4: guy in the clubhouse from everything I've ever heard. What
- 18:46Speaker 4: does he bring to the Orioles? And how happy should
- 18:49Speaker 4: the Orioles fans because they got Taylor, they got Taylor Warp,
- 18:53Speaker 4: they got now they have penal longs, so they had
- 18:55Speaker 4: a two huge bats they should need starting pitching. But
- 18:57Speaker 4: is this Micha Elias really saying, hey, we're finally have
- 19:01Speaker 4: the money and resources to really go.
- 19:03Speaker 8: Well, it looks like it. I you know, I was skeptical.
- 19:05Speaker 8: I think a lot of the fans were that they
- 19:07Speaker 8: were willing to do this. They got shut out there
- 19:08Speaker 8: with Schwarber. They were in on Shober and could have extended,
- 19:12Speaker 8: but they got their one of their guys. And I think,
- 19:14Speaker 8: you know, when you look at the young talent that
- 19:16Speaker 8: they had, it was lacking a couple i'll call them
- 19:18Speaker 8: adults in the room, Guys that could be leaders in
- 19:21Speaker 8: the clubhouse, Guys that could give you a professional approach,
- 19:25Speaker 8: you know, and be impactful to take pressure off the
- 19:27Speaker 8: young guys right now. It allows you Gunner to just
- 19:30Speaker 8: you know, if he can stay healthy, not worry about
- 19:33Speaker 8: anything else.
- 19:33Speaker 5: You know.
- 19:34Speaker 8: It allows a little bit of room for Rutchmen to
- 19:36Speaker 8: going to hopefully get back on track how all day,
- 19:38Speaker 8: to develop in his own you know window. You know,
- 19:42Speaker 8: he's still a really young kid. You know, maybe it
- 19:44Speaker 8: allows Cowser to hit in the seventh hole, which is
- 19:47Speaker 8: probably where he is better off, instead of hitting at
- 19:49Speaker 8: the top of the lineup. Like it changes their entire
- 19:51Speaker 8: lineup around and now they have to go get pitching.
- 19:54Speaker 8: But you know you remember this too, ag when when
- 19:56Speaker 8: you'd signed somewhere, or let's say, I'll go back to
- 19:58Speaker 8: when I signed. When when I was with the Mets
- 20:01Speaker 8: and we signed Pedro Martinez Omar signed him when we
- 20:05Speaker 8: had we struggled until we got Pedro, and then Pedro
- 20:08Speaker 8: helped us get Beltron right, and he got of like,
- 20:10Speaker 8: oh wow, Pedro signed there. Okay, there must be doing something,
- 20:13Speaker 8: don't Beltron goes. I want to be there too, you
- 20:15Speaker 8: Alonzo signing there goes? Okay, well, now they's starting pictures. Okay,
- 20:19Speaker 8: now I know what the Oriels are doing.
- 20:21Speaker 6: I wasn't sure. Now I know, you know, and I
- 20:23Speaker 6: think it just changes.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Thank you, Thank you for saying that.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Thank you, because I've been saying this crowds AVNI for
- 20:29Speaker 4: days now. Teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates, Oh, we want
- 20:32Speaker 4: to turn our fortunes around. Show everybody you got to
- 20:35Speaker 4: sign somebody, and you might have to overpay a little bit, right,
- 20:38Speaker 4: but that shows that they're serious. Right, And here you go,
- 20:41Speaker 4: the Orioles are now officially serious.
- 20:43Speaker 6: About Jason Worth did it with the Nationals a couple
- 20:46Speaker 6: of years.
- 20:48Speaker 5: I mean, there's a long list of this afterning.
- 20:50Speaker 4: The Cubs did it with Lesser and Lackey, that's right,
- 20:53Speaker 4: Rizo and Bryan and all those guys coming, Oh hey,
- 20:56Speaker 4: we got and they might have done until the year early,
- 20:58Speaker 4: but then they ended up winning the World Series Erlander, right,
- 21:01Speaker 4: I mean, so sorry, yeah.
- 21:03Speaker 5: Thank you for saying no.
- 21:04Speaker 8: I mean it's true, and we've seen it happen so
- 21:06Speaker 8: many different times. I don't know why organizations don't do
- 21:09Speaker 8: it more. I really don't.
- 21:11Speaker 7: Who got the better deal Phillies and Schwarber, Orioles and
- 21:16Speaker 7: Pete Alonzo because it's two years younger for Pete, he
- 21:19Speaker 7: can still play first. It doesn't hamstring you yet.
- 21:22Speaker 8: At d H Right, Well, that's that's a great question
- 21:26Speaker 8: because and they're so different, like one's righty, one's lefty.
- 21:29Speaker 5: You know.
- 21:30Speaker 8: I think with with the Orioles, I think they got
- 21:34Speaker 8: the better deal because he can play a position and
- 21:38Speaker 8: they needed them so badly, you know, the Phillies, if
- 21:43Speaker 8: it wasn't Schwarber, they would have pivoted to Tucker or whatever.
- 21:46Speaker 8: This this opens up so many different things, and there's
- 21:48Speaker 8: so much skepticism there with the Orioles, like Dave Dombrowski
- 21:52Speaker 8: knows what he's doing. You have a high degree of
- 21:54Speaker 8: faith and confidence that, oh jeez, if you didn't get
- 21:56Speaker 8: sharburh okay, they would done something else.
- 21:58Speaker 6: But like I knew, Dave was not gonna.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Let Schweber get away.
- 22:01Speaker 8: There's no chance, you know, the Hall of Fame, you know,
- 22:04Speaker 8: general manager.
- 22:05Speaker 6: But with with Michael Llias, there was a lot of
- 22:07Speaker 6: uncertainty down there.
- 22:08Speaker 8: He needed he needed this one, you know, And and
- 22:11Speaker 8: I think you know it'll age.
- 22:12Speaker 5: Well.
- 22:12Speaker 6: Listen, I'm not gonna bet ever against Schwarbert.
- 22:15Speaker 8: If he ends up hitting forty more homers per year
- 22:18Speaker 8: over the next five years, we're gonna be talking about
- 22:20Speaker 8: in the Hall of Fame like he's gonna have over
- 22:21Speaker 8: five hundred home runs if you start to look at legacy.
- 22:24Speaker 5: So I like, I love what he is.
- 22:25Speaker 8: The problem. The only problem is he's a DH, you know.
- 22:27Speaker 8: And I think that's when I say DH, it just
- 22:30Speaker 8: hurts your versatility from a front office side of you know,
- 22:33Speaker 8: your the way your roster plays out.
- 22:35Speaker 5: So I love Kyle Schwarmer.
- 22:36Speaker 8: I'd want him on my team any day, and i'd
- 22:38Speaker 8: I would make him a full time DH and screw
- 22:41Speaker 8: the rotation DH.
- 22:43Speaker 6: Like every team likes to do.
- 22:44Speaker 8: But you know, in the sense of which one might
- 22:47Speaker 8: work better, I think Alonso is just because he has
- 22:49Speaker 8: some position, some positional flexibility.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Okay, so you mentioned this, and we've talked about the
- 22:54Speaker 4: oils forever. They have all these prospects, Cow's are Holiday,
- 22:58Speaker 4: Adley Gunner, and they never really where they were reverse
- 23:00Speaker 4: to trading them.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Right, how much is a prospect really worth?
- 23:03Speaker 4: Because we just had a whole Jackson Holiday was worth
- 23:05Speaker 4: forty to forty nine million dollars?
- 23:07Speaker 6: Right, how much is a prospect really worth?
- 23:09Speaker 4: And how do you know when to get rid of
- 23:11Speaker 4: them and make that move and hold on to them
- 23:14Speaker 4: and then they become too old and now they're not
- 23:15Speaker 4: worth anything.
- 23:16Speaker 8: So the worth the value when we look at it,
- 23:19Speaker 8: a lot of it's in the projection. So like, okay,
- 23:22Speaker 8: is Jackson Holiday going to be an impactful second base
- 23:25Speaker 8: slash shortstop in the foreseeable future?
- 23:29Speaker 6: And if that's the case, you know, is that a five.
- 23:31Speaker 8: Or six war player just just just use war as
- 23:33Speaker 8: the simple way of evaluating it. Is he going to
- 23:37Speaker 8: be a five or six war player over the next
- 23:39Speaker 8: four seasons, right or better?
- 23:42Speaker 6: And if that's the case, then you then you can
- 23:44Speaker 6: put a value on it.
- 23:45Speaker 8: You know, you throw eight nine million dollars per war,
- 23:47Speaker 8: you can come up with evaluation at least whether you
- 23:50Speaker 8: agree with it or not.
- 23:51Speaker 6: That's that's how the front officers are doing it, right.
- 23:53Speaker 8: So I think that's you know, in Mayo as another example,
- 23:56Speaker 8: like they have a high degree of faith that Kobe
- 23:58Speaker 8: Mayo is going to be an impact guy.
- 24:00Speaker 6: There's too much swing and missing there for me right now,
- 24:03Speaker 6: you know.
- 24:03Speaker 8: And so you know, what's a potential thirty homer guy
- 24:08Speaker 8: that can't make contact, doesn't really do anything for you
- 24:10Speaker 8: in the marketplace, that's not as much value, right, so
- 24:13Speaker 8: he has to figure out a way to make better
- 24:14Speaker 8: contact or else. You know that the value that they
- 24:17Speaker 8: think he has is going to go down to two
- 24:19Speaker 8: is gonna happen like six months so to strike out?
- 24:23Speaker 8: Yeah no, right, So yeah, I think that's the stuff
- 24:25Speaker 8: like that, And I'm always fascinated about it because it changes.
- 24:28Speaker 8: Like there be times where our valuators would go, oh yeah,
- 24:30Speaker 8: this guy is impactful, and then a year later we're like,
- 24:33Speaker 8: oh man, we don't have.
- 24:34Speaker 6: Any value for this guy.
- 24:35Speaker 8: We we held on to him too long, you know,
- 24:37Speaker 8: So that that's you know, there's those those impactful guys
- 24:41Speaker 8: that usually are obvious, Like when you saw an impactful
- 24:44Speaker 8: guy come out, you go, oh yeah, that guy's gonna stick.
- 24:46Speaker 6: You could kind of see it with your own eyes.
- 24:47Speaker 8: It's the nuance of oh can Jordan Westberg, who really
- 24:53Speaker 8: wasn't on the scene that much, can he become an
- 24:56Speaker 8: All Star or not? Like those are the guys you're like,
- 24:59Speaker 8: okay that you can you make I think missus more
- 25:02Speaker 8: misses or hits on those type of guys because you're
- 25:04Speaker 8: not really sure when they first come up.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Dude, you're the man of the hour. Thanks for stopping
- 25:08Speaker 2: by and you got to hit at Thanks for having shift.
- 25:10Speaker 6: Thanks for bringing the crowd over here for me.
- 25:12Speaker 8: Oh this is the adrenaline, right.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Yes, exactly.
- 25:16Speaker 6: It's good.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Good to see you, duke, Thank you, appreciate you. That's
- 25:19Speaker 1: Jim Yes, uh, good to see you. You can catch
- 25:22Speaker 1: him on s n Y Serious Exam all over the place. Hey,
- 25:27Speaker 1: let's talk about MGM futures al Cy Young Winner. I'm
- 25:31Speaker 1: assuming that's a plus three fifty for Terrek Schooble and
- 25:33Speaker 1: a plus three fifty taking him Garrett Crochet, and then
- 25:37Speaker 1: a plus eight hundo for Jacob deGrom, Hey, it's awesome
- 25:41Speaker 1: to groam put together what thirty starts this year?
- 25:44Speaker 2: Chances he take.
- 25:45Speaker 4: School because I think you'll get traded, possibly get traded
- 25:48Speaker 4: in the middle of the year, So he's out. Okay,
- 25:50Speaker 4: Crochet would be the one on this list.
- 25:52Speaker 5: I like that.
- 25:53Speaker 4: I just you know, hopefully he can duplicate what he did,
- 25:56Speaker 4: replicate what he did last year. And Jacob de Grim
- 25:59Speaker 4: is always a health cancer. But when he's right, he's right.
- 26:01Speaker 4: But you know, he had a really good year last
- 26:03Speaker 4: year and he didn't. You didn't finish that highly in
- 26:05Speaker 4: the cy Young So it's a tough list.
- 26:08Speaker 5: Give me a little more.
- 26:09Speaker 4: You make a few more people, please, Yeah, you want
- 26:11Speaker 4: to go. I mean, not as many people as now
- 26:13Speaker 4: are behind us. Again, but give me a few more
- 26:15Speaker 4: people on.
- 26:15Speaker 1: The crazy they're rabid animals behind us. But crats your
- 26:20Speaker 1: thrists on al Yeah.
- 26:23Speaker 7: Crochet at plus three point fifty because of the concern
- 26:27Speaker 7: anytime you're picking any of these futures, concern of injury
- 26:31Speaker 7: is always there. But to me, the concern of being
- 26:34Speaker 7: traded like Scoogle could be. He could be twelve and
- 26:38Speaker 7: one at the trade deadline, and if the Tigers aren't
- 26:41Speaker 7: in it, which is completely out of Scooble's control. He
- 26:45Speaker 7: will get traded, not could he will and it will
- 26:49Speaker 7: be a massive haul that the Tigers will still get
- 26:52Speaker 7: for him. And if he goes to the National League,
- 26:56Speaker 7: you're cooked.
- 26:56Speaker 5: You're not.
- 26:57Speaker 7: He's not winning the Cy Young Award winner. But to me,
- 27:00Speaker 7: I think Crochet is the Crochet is a playing it.
- 27:02Speaker 7: I love that number at plus three fifty.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Yes please, okay, he's the one. Let me do a
- 27:10Speaker 1: little quick reader. And then we've got a guest joining us.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Bet ardt token. We'll look for that. We've got all
- 27:16Speaker 1: off season to figure it out. Uh, you can get
- 27:19Speaker 1: that to bet on any pro football bet token is
- 27:22Speaker 1: live ahead of Thursday Night Football this week. To use it,
- 27:25Speaker 1: add a bet on a pro football event to your betslip,
- 27:27Speaker 1: activate the token, get bonus bets at the bet that
- 27:29Speaker 1: was made with the token. Loses gambling problem or concern
- 27:31Speaker 1: called one one hundred gambler
