- 0:00to read several different verses and we'll have people read them out so we can see parallels as well that we read in the Old and New Testament that parallel with Matthew's
- 0:10message.
- 0:11So if someone can please turn and read Zechariah 14 and verse 9.
- 0:28It's Zechariah 14 and verse 9.
- 0:35show there being one.
- 0:39So he's king over all the earth.
- 0:40So that's universal kingship.
- 0:43Daniel 22 and verse 24, the next verse shows that the kingdom cannot be destroyed.
- 0:50Let's have someone read Isaiah 32 and verse one.
- 0:55Let's see how Jesus rules.
- 0:56Because we know he's the universal king and we know that the kingdom's not going to ever be destroyed, but how does he rule in his kingdom?
- 1:05Isaiah 32 and verse one.
- 1:14He rules in righteousness.
- 1:17Of course we wouldn't expect anything less of Jesus Christ.
- 1:21While conducting this study through Matthew, I couldn't help but think, and I always try to think of key words ah that go with each chapter in each book.
- 1:30I think the key word that we're going to use this morning for the book of Matthew is the word fulfilled.
- 1:36I think that properly sums up the meaning of Matthew's text in a single word.
- 1:41The heart of the Matthew's gospel is this idea.
- 1:45It's in a nutshell that Jesus fulfills the Old Testament.
- 1:50We have prophecies all throughout the Old Testament.
- 1:51showing that Jesus is coming and what He's going to be, how He's going to rule, and even how long His kingdom is going to exist.
- 1:58In fact, Matthew uses the phrase that it might be fulfilled which was spoken.
- 2:03This phrase he actually uses 11 times throughout the book of Matthew.
- 2:09So it's all being fulfilled.
- 2:12But when we open up to Matthew chapter 1, we're going to notice that it starts out with a laundry list of boring names.
- 2:22That's how I viewed it the first time I opened the book.
- 2:25Most of the time I'm reading through Genesis.
- 2:27You pick up the schedule, I'm read through the Bible in a year, and you start getting to Genesis, Numbers, Job, and it's so and so, but got so and so, but it got so and so, but it
- 2:37got so and so, but it got so But this is very important.
- 2:42This could be one of the most important portions of the Bible is because of the genealogies that it gives here.
- 2:49Matthew begins with a genealogy that ties Jesus to Abraham.
- 2:52This would be the father of the nation and David who is known as Israel's greatest king.
- 2:58He uses the title son of David more than all other gospel writers combined in the book of Matthew.
- 3:05Two, Jesus fulfills the law.
- 3:07Jesus often looks like he was breaking the law.
- 3:10Now how so?
- 3:12He may look like he's breaking the law, of course we know that that's not the case.
- 3:15The Gentiles, the ones in power, the sect of the Jews, would claim that he was healing on Sabbath and that was a work.
- 3:21He shouldn't be doing that because you weren't supposed to work on the Sabbath.
- 3:25He would also ignore man-made washings and claim to have the authority to forgive all sins.
- 3:32Now to those that don't know, it would have been blasphemous to say that you could forgive someone's sins.
- 3:39But it says in Matthew chapter 5,
- 3:42Think not that I have come to destroy the law, but to fulfill.
- 3:46Christ was not breaking the law.
- 3:49He was here to fulfill it completely and entirely and perfectly.
- 3:52True righteousness, Jesus shows, is deeper than the Pharisees outward obedience.
- 3:58It's a righteousness of the heart.
- 4:00You see, the Pharisees would go through all the motions.
- 4:02They'd punch the time clock in the back.
- 4:04They'd wear the proper garment.
- 4:06They'd be on time.
- 4:07They looked great.
- 4:09But what was in their hearts wasn't what it should have been.
- 4:12They were sinning.
- 4:15Three, Jesus fulfills Israel's story.
- 4:17Matthew shows Jesus living out of Israel's, living out Israel's entire story.
- 4:22So we see Israel going to Egypt.
- 4:24And here we see parallels.
- 4:25Israel fleeing all the way to Egypt.
- 4:28Jesus was taken to Egypt.
- 4:30He did this as a small child where he learned.
- 4:32Israel passed through the Red Sea.
- 4:35We have a parallel with Jesus passing through baptism.
- 4:37He didn't do this for the remission of his sins.
- 4:40He did it as an example for all of us.
- 4:42Here's another parallel I saw.
- 4:44Israel was tested for 40 years.
- 4:46Jesus was tested for 40 days.
- 4:49It's interesting all the parallels that we can see between the Old and the New Testament.
- 4:53Moses gave the law on the mountain.
- 4:56What mountain did Jesus give his sermon on?
- 4:58Sermon on the mountain, right?
- 5:04My notes just jumped all over the place.
- 5:06There we go.
- 5:07Some calls Matthew's of Jesus a new Moses.
- 5:11Now these are commentators.
- 5:12I wouldn't go as far as to say he's a new Moses.
- 5:14He's the first Jesus, not a new Moses.
- 5:16But there are five books of Moses and five major teachings within the section of Matthew, another major parallel.
- 5:22Throughout the book, Jesus repeatedly calls Israel to repent.
- 5:26When they refuse, he weeps over the city and warns of judgment, which was fulfilled in 8070 when Jerusalem fell and was taken over.
- 5:34So the theme, what is the central theme of Matthew as a book?
- 5:38Well, it's that Jesus Christ is King, right?
- 5:41If the key word is fulfilled, who's fulfilling and what is he fulfilling?
- 5:45Jesus Christ being the King.
- 5:49Matthew is the gospel of the king and his kingdom.
- 5:52So we have a few different key verses.
- 5:54And I'm going to skip over this section because I picked out key verses of the book.
- 5:58But I prefer to go through key verses of each chapter as we're able to get to those.
- 6:03ah So we'll hit those.
- 6:05And you can feel free to highlight those verses.
- 6:07Now, these are not anything written in stone.
- 6:09These are just ones that kind of called out to me that I thought.
- 6:14summarized the full meaning of what was in that specific chapter.
- 6:20so overview of Matthew.
- 6:22Part 1.
- 6:23is going to be chapters one through four.
- 6:25This is going to be the introduction to Jesus because we see His birth, His boyhood, His baptism, and His battle with Satan all in the first four verses.
- 6:36Then we can section it off into two more sections.
- 6:39We have part two, which is the ministry in Galilee.
- 6:42This is going to be chapter four to chapter 18.
- 6:44This divided would be what Jesus taught.
- 6:47This would be chapters five through seven, which is the Sermon on the Mount.
- 6:51You have what Jesus wrought.
- 6:53or brought, either one.
- 6:55Us preachers, like to rhyme things, so.
- 6:58That would be chapters 8 through 10 and his miracles, what Jesus wrought.
- 7:02And what people thought.
- 7:03These are the varied reactions from chapter 11 through chapter 18 of how they reacted to the gospel message and all of his miracles.
- 7:12And part three is the climax in Judea.
- 7:14This is chapter 19 through chapter 28.
- 7:17Jesus presents himself in Jerusalem, 19 through 25.
- 7:20Jesus is crucified, 26 through 27.
- 7:23And Jesus rises and commissions his disciples in chapter 28.
- 7:28So that completes an overview of the book of Matthew.
- 7:30So let's go ahead and get into chapter one.
- 7:33aah We'll go ahead.
- 7:36and ask why are we studying specifically this chapter.
- 7:41This chapter looks simple, but it's a genealogy.
- 7:44I genealogies were important, followed by a birth announcement.
- 7:48And this actually helps us in chapter one defeat one of the largest arguments made for Jesus Christ being the Messiah, which is that he was not a Levite.
- 7:59This genealogy helps us prove
- 8:02how he came from the order of Malkizideq, which I'm hoping to get to either today or at the next class, and proved that he was the Messiah despite not being a Levite.
- 8:13Because in Old Testament law, you had to be a Levite to be a priest.
- 8:17And we know him to be both our high priest and our king.
- 8:21Again, this is one of the most foundational chapters in the entire New Testament.
- 8:27Most importantly,
- 8:30Matthew does not begin with a miracle or teaching, but with a legal record.
- 8:34All right, so we have a roadmap that I've created for chapter one.
- 8:39So here's the roadmap, and you can feel free to mark this in your Bible if you want with little connotations.
- 8:44I like to just put a little line and section them off so I can see the different sections.
- 8:48But verses 1 through 17 is Joseph's ancestry.
- 8:52We're going to examine the genealogy of Jesus, who these people were, why genealogy mattered to the Jews, and why Matthew includes certain surprising names, and what all this
- 9:02teaches us about the Messiah.
- 9:04That's going to go deeper into the whole argument for the order of Melchizedek.
- 9:08The second section of Matthew chapter one is verses 18 through 19, very small, but I noted this as Joseph's quandary, his question.
- 9:17We're gonna look at Joseph's situation when he learns Mary's pregnant, how he reacts to this.
- 9:23We're gonna talk about Jewish betrothal, Joseph's options, his emotional struggle, and the character he shows and what he decides to do when he finds all this out.
- 9:32Because he did have options.
- 9:34And some of the...
- 9:35uh
- 9:36some of the marriage laws in antiquity for the Jews is very different from how we see things now, but we'll get into that.
- 9:46Section three for chapter one, we Joseph's dream, this is verses 20 through 23, where they examine the angel's message to Joseph, the meaning of the name Jesus, what it actually
- 9:57translates to, and how prophecy is fulfilled.
- 10:01So be thinking about what the word Immanuel,
- 10:04means.
- 10:05Jesus goes by many different names, but each one of these has different meanings, and they're very important meanings.
- 10:11And finally, we have section four, which is Joseph's decision.
- 10:14This is verses 24 through 25.
- 10:15We're going to see how Joseph responds with obedience and faith, and what teaches us about righteousness itself, because Joseph can be a very good teacher on what a good Christian
- 10:25attitude can be, what righteousness looks like, and how Joseph's choices help establish Jesus as the legal heir of David's throne.
- 10:33So.
- 10:36Does anyone know why Jews kept genealogies?
- 10:42Why do we keep genealogies?
- 10:43For the most part, it's kind of cool to see where you came from, right?
- 10:48If you're, you know, one third part Samoan or Japanese or whatever it may be.
- 10:54um But we need to know that while it's cool, every word in scripture is very, very important.
- 11:03Every comma, every apostrophe showing ownership, all of these things are important.
- 11:08So that list of boring names that we were talking about earlier,
- 11:12They all have a major purpose.
- 11:13uh So let's go ahead and start.
- 11:17Let's have someone read section, actually I'll go ahead and read section one.
- 11:21So I'll read one through 17 so we can kind of see what's going on.
- 11:26So we're in Matthew chapter one versus 17.
- 11:30One through 17.
- 11:34The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
- 11:39Abraham begat Isaac.
- 11:41Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren.
- 11:45And Judas begat Pharez, and Zahra of Tamar, and Pharez begat Esrum, and Esrum begat Aram, and Aram begat Aminadab, and Aminadab begat Nason, and Nason begat Salem.
- 11:57I don't go to sleep on me.
- 11:59And Salem begat Boaz of Rechab, and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth, and Obed begat Jesse.
- 12:06And Jesse begat David the king, and David the king begat Solomon.
- 12:10of her that had been the wife of Uriah.
- 12:15And Solomon begat Reboam, and Reboam begat Abba, and Abba begat Asa, and Asa begat Jehoshaphat.
- 12:25And Jehoshaphat begat Joram, and Joram begat Osias, and Osias begat Jotham, and Jotham begat Haz, and Haz begat Ezekias, and Ezekias begat Manasseh, and Manasseh begat Amon, and
- 12:39Amon begat Joesis, and Joesis begat Jeconias, and his brother, about the time that they were carried away to Babylon.
- 12:47And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconias begat Selepheal, and Selepheal begat Zerubbabel.
- 12:54And Zerubbabel begat Abuid.
- 12:56And Abuid begat Elekin.
- 12:59And Elekin begat Azor.
- 13:01And Azor begat Saddock.
- 13:02And Saddock begat Achim.
- 13:04And Achim begat Eluid.
- 13:06And Eluid begat Eleazar.
- 13:09Eleazar begat Mathen.
- 13:11And Mathen begat Jacob.
- 13:13Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, so we see it all coming to a head, and whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.
- 13:20So the generations from Abraham to David are 14 generations.
- 13:25So that long laundry list of boring names that we just wrote were 14 generations of families.
- 13:31Seems boring on the top, but there's a lot of very important information and stories that we gain from that.
- 13:37From the carrying away from the Babylon onto Christ are 14 generations.
- 13:42All right, so let's go through this.
- 13:46Starting off, why genealogies were so important to the Jews.
- 13:51It has a lot of similarities with why genealogies are important to us today.
- 13:55Number one, land inheritance in ancient Jewish culture depended a lot on genealogy.
- 14:01If you didn't know who owned the land before you, you wouldn't know who's supposed to inherit the land once the person died, right?
- 14:07It's the kind of same thing with us, with wills.
- 14:10And we can read this if someone will get Leviticus chapter 25 and verse 23.
- 14:16It'll be Leviticus 25, 23.
- 14:23We're going back into the Old Testament to see why the genealogies were so important, how they relate to property management.
- 14:46So the lamb belonged to God.
- 14:48Families needed to prove their ancestral line to reclaim it during the year of Jubilee.
- 14:52That's what it's talking about here.
- 14:54They needed to be sown for that time.
- 14:57Another reason for genealogies that we see in Ezra 2 and verse 62 is that priestly qualifications depended on this.
- 15:04We had hinted at this earlier about the tribe of Levi, but priests had to prove that they were descended from Aaron.
- 15:10Without genealogical records, you weren't allowed to serve.
- 15:13You could say you were a Levi all the time.
- 15:16but they weren't going to allow you to.
- 15:18So let's look at Ezra 2 and verse 62.
- 15:32I'll get this one.
- 15:34These sought their register among those that were mocked.
- 15:37I'm sorry, those that were reckoned by genealogy, but they were not found.
- 15:42So they couldn't find their genealogies.
- 15:44Therefore were they as polluted, put from the priesthood.
- 15:48So without proof of the record of their genealogy, they weren't allowed to serve.
- 15:52It'd be kind of like today, without that passport, we can't leave the United States.
- 15:56Without our driver's license, we're legally not allowed to drive the car.
- 16:00They pull you over, see that you don't have the driver's license, they're going to take you out of the vehicle rather quickly.
- 16:06Another reason for why the genealogical line mattered was the Messiah had to come from a specific line.
- 16:13Now why?
- 16:15Let's go back to Matthew, but let's skip ahead and go to Matthew chapter 22 and verse 42.
- 16:35saying what things he approached to the Son is, they say unto him, the Son of David.
- 16:42The Son of David.
- 16:43Every Jewish reader knew that the Messiah had to be descended from Abraham, from David.
- 16:48He had to come from that line.
- 16:50So genealogies weren't filler, they weren't, you know, to use a modern term today, but it was important.
- 16:58These were legal documents, identity markers.
- 17:00They were spiritual records as well.
- 17:03So genealogies were very important.
- 17:06Now the structure of the genealogy that we see in the first part, the first 17 verses of Matthew chapter 1, it can be organized into three different groups of the 14 generations.
- 17:17We have Abraham to David.
- 17:19We have David down to the Babylonian exile and the Babylonian exile all the way to Christ.
- 17:25It's an easy structure that I came up with.
- 17:27That way it's intentional, it's memorable.
- 17:31It's something to help me kind of break down the sections in my head.
- 17:34It helps make a little more sense when you're reading through that long list of names.
- 17:39It shows Israel's rise of the Abraham to David.
- 17:43We see the decline of Israel, which is David to the exile, and the restoration, which would be the exile to Christ.
- 17:50So three different sections to look at the genealogy a different way.
- 17:54But there are key names throughout the genealogy, very important ones.
- 17:57Abraham.
- 17:58Who is Abraham?
- 18:01Father of the faithful, recipient of God's promise, in thy seed shall all nations be blessed.
- 18:09That's what he was told by God.
- 18:11All right, what about Isaac?
- 18:14Was Isaac the child of promise?
- 18:16God promised that they would have a child.
- 18:19In a way, was foreshadowing Christ's virgin birth as well.
- 18:23Jacob.
- 18:24Who was Jacob?
- 18:27What'd say?
- 18:31Isaac's son, yes, and he was the father of the twelve tribes, right?
- 18:34Yes.
- 18:35Yeah.
- 18:36He was a perfect, but he was chosen, and he did a very good job.
- 18:41What about Judah?
- 18:42Judah received the promise of kingship.
- 18:44We read that in Genesis chapter 49 and verse 10.
- 18:47The Messiah must come from Judah, as it reads, okay?
- 18:53That's something else to look.
- 18:55We have four women located in the genealogy.
- 18:59It's kind of shocking for the Jews to put women in genealogies.
- 19:04It was a mostly patriarchal society.
- 19:07So it would have had the king at the head.
- 19:08We see that later on with the Queen of Sheba, right?
- 19:10The Queen of Sheba didn't have a whole lot of power.
- 19:12In fact, she was thrown out at one point.
- 19:15But he includes women.
- 19:17And more notably, it's not the women that we would expect in the genealogy of Christ.
- 19:21And yet they're there.
- 19:22But it teaches us something.
- 19:24Let's look a little deeper.
- 19:26Do we see the name Tamar?
- 19:29Who knows who Tamar is?
- 19:33Genesis chapter 38.
- 19:39She did pretty despicable things.
- 19:40We don't have to say it out loud.
- 19:41It's all right.
- 19:43Her story is messy.
- 19:44It's very scandalous, right?
- 19:46But God works through her, right?
- 19:49We see Rahab.
- 19:51We read about Rahab in Joshua chapter two.
- 19:53This was a Gentile prostitute, but she had great faith.
- 19:57She's also included and talked about in Hebrews chapter 11.
- 20:01But these women are in the genealogy of Christ.
- 20:05Okay.
- 20:05Let's keep reading.
- 20:06We're going to learn something.
- 20:07Ruth.
- 20:09Ruth was a Moabite outsider, adopted into God's family through loyalty and faith, right?
- 20:16Ruth was a stand-up person.
- 20:19Now, she's not named specifically, but we see David's name and who he bore, Solomon, through who?
- 20:26It says the wife of Uriah.
- 20:29Who was that?
- 20:31Pashiba.
- 20:32It's okay, you guys can talk out loud.
- 20:34I teach a little different than Aaron does, for sure.
- 20:37um
- 20:38She's mentioned as the wife of Rirai.
- 20:41I think this is because he's reminding us of David's sin.
- 20:45He's not going to name her by name.
- 20:47These women teach us that Jesus' family includes a few different things.
- 20:52We see outsiders, we see sinners, we see broken stories.
- 20:58We see Gentiles, don't we?
- 20:59Full of Gentiles.
- 21:01We see scandals and we see redemption.
- 21:05Jesus didn't come from a perfect family.
- 21:09But he didn't use that and become a victim of it, did he?
- 21:12He came for imperfect families.
- 21:16The big difference.
- 21:18We can learn a lot by looking at the genealogical list.
- 21:21So we move forward to David and the kings.
- 21:23Also in the genealogy, it's almost a centerpiece, right?
- 21:26They're the names that stick out to us most when we read that laundry list of boring names.
- 21:33God promised them eternal throne and Jesus is the fulfillment of that.
- 21:38Solomon follows, then a line of kings, both good and evil.
- 21:41We see Hezekiah.
- 21:43Was Hezekiah faithful or evil?
- 21:46Faithful.
- 21:47Faithful.
- 21:48He was faithful, yes.
- 21:50What about Manasseh?
- 21:53It's a bit a trick question.
- 21:54Manasseh was terribly wicked to begin with, but then he repented, changed his ways, right?
- 22:00What about Josiah?
- 22:03Mm-hmm.
- 22:05God preserved the messianic line through faithful kings, through wicked kings, through crises, and even through an exile.
- 22:13And yet the genealogy proves that Christ's line never left the planet.
- 22:19But here we come into the Jeconiah problem.
- 22:21and God's solution.
- 22:22I'm going to use the word curse here, but it's not a curse as we think, like, you know, voodoo curse.
- 22:28It's just the best word that I can think of to use to signify what happened.
- 22:32But we see Jeconiah, your translation may say Jehoiakim, and he was cursed in Jeremiah 22 and verse 30.
- 22:40Can somebody please get that?
- 22:41We want to read that.
- 22:42Jeremiah 22 and verse 30.
- 23:00the Lord.
- 23:21Okay, so God said that no descendant of his would sit on the throne of David.
- 23:25So we had a problem, right?
- 23:28If he was part of that line, how could Christ be sitting on the throne of David?
- 23:33How could Christ be the Messiah?
- 23:36Okay, so here's the perfect solution that God gives us, Joseph's genealogy includes Jeconiah, right?
- 23:46This gives Jesus legal right to the throne.
- 23:49But Jesus is not biologically descended from Joseph, is he?
- 23:54No, he's not.
- 23:55Who's he descended from?
- 23:59through Mary.
- 23:59Yeah.
- 24:00So would he be able to avoid that curse?
- 24:03Absolutely.
- 24:04Yeah.
- 24:05So through Mary's genealogy, which we read through Luke chapter three, this avoids Jeconiah altogether and traces his lineage back through Nathan instead.
- 24:14So we avoid the Jeconiah problem.
- 24:16That's not an issue.
- 24:17Jesus receives the throne without receiving the, as I said before, the curse that was put on Jeconiah.
- 24:26But then we come into section two, moving past the genealogy.
- 24:29We're going move into Joseph's quandary.
- 24:31This is section two, verses 18 through 19 of Matthew chapter one.
- 24:37Jump back over here.
- 24:43Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on the rise.
- 24:46When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
- 24:54Then Joseph, her husband, being just a man and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
- 25:04Who can tell me the meaning of the word privily?
- 25:08Secretly.
- 25:09Privately.
- 25:10It's an old fancy word, but Mary's found to be pregnant.
- 25:13She knows Joseph isn't the father, right?
- 25:17She knows that it's not Joseph's son.
- 25:20They're betrothed, but are they legally married yet?
- 25:27No, no.
- 25:28And yet, now we get back into why I said earlier we need to look at Jewish law in antiquity.
- 25:33It was a lot different back then than what it is today.
- 25:36Joseph would have been heartbroken, he would have been confused, but when you are betrothed to a woman in ancient Jewish culture, you actually had to get a divorce.
- 25:51Before you were even like completely submerged in marriage, right?
- 25:55You had to get divorce papers just to get rid of the being betrothed to one another.
- 26:02When you're in the fiance state, that was just as legally binding for them as it would have been for us today being completely married.
- 26:10Which is kind of odd.
- 26:11It's something that stuck out to me.
- 26:15but moving forward from that.
- 26:18Yeah, engaged, promise, yeah.
- 26:19But it was kind of like a legal status back then.
- 26:22And so you would have had to have went to what would be the equivalent of the local courthouse, and you'd have to get documentation.
- 26:29He would have to embarrass her publicly and put her away for that.
- 26:33But he had a mind to do so privately, right?
- 26:38When we look at verse 19, it calls Joseph what kind of man?
- 26:45A just man.
- 26:46That's right.
- 26:47This means that Joseph would be righteous, merciful.
- 26:52A just man would be self-controlled.
- 26:54A just man would be patient.
- 26:56A just man would be wise.
- 26:58He would be conscious of his decisions.
- 27:01He wouldn't just leap into things, right?
- 27:03So Joseph decides to put Mary away quietly instead of shaming her publicly.
- 27:08I think this speaks volumes of his character because he doesn't want to ruin the life of someone else.
- 27:13So a lesson that we can learn from Joseph when looking at this is as Christians, should we think before deciding to act?
- 27:22Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:24Yeah, we notice Joseph doesn't panic.
- 27:27He doesn't lash out in anger.
- 27:30had every right to.
- 27:31I mean, he thinks that it's someone else's child.
- 27:34It is someone else's child.
- 27:35It's not his.
- 27:36And it's his betrothed.
- 27:39But he doesn't assume the worst either.
- 27:42We see no indication of that.
- 27:44He doesn't react emotionally.
- 27:47He finds this unique balance between justice and mercy, doesn't he?
- 27:51He's trying to think through.
- 27:54So as Christians, I think we need to not act on emotion, but we need to think.
- 27:58We need to pray, most importantly.
- 28:01Then we need to decide on what action we're supposed to take whenever we're faced with very tough and hard decisions with people.
- 28:08Joseph's example here is one of mature.
- 28:11m
- 28:11disciplined righteousness, isn't it?
- 28:16So moving on to section three, Joseph's dream.
- 28:18This is going to be verses 20 through 23.
- 28:21If I can get someone to read that.
- 28:26Matthew chapter one, 20 through 23.
- 28:28But while he thought about these things behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream Saying Joseph son of David do not be afraid to take him marry your wife for that
- 28:39which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit and She will bring forth a son and you shall call his name Jesus for he will save his people from their sins
- 28:50How many verses?
- 28:51That's a 23.
- 28:53So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet saying, behold the virgin shall be with child and bear a son and they shall call
- 29:03his name Emmanuel, which is translated God with us.
- 29:07Now, when we look back at the verse, it says that which was conceived in him was of the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit, depending on your translation.
- 29:15The Holy Ghost there, that word in Greek means guest.
- 29:20Doesn't mean like cat's birds, not a wispy spirit floating around.
- 29:23Just a side note.
- 29:26But as Joseph considers what to do, God intervenes, doesn't he?
- 29:33We see an angel appearing to him.
- 29:34And what does he tell Joseph?
- 29:35Two words, very important for Joseph.
- 29:39Fear not.
- 29:40Fear not.
- 29:41One, it'd be frightening to have an angel standing right in front of you.
- 29:45But also it could be frightening the situation as well as what he's in, right?
- 29:48We're not sure the context of which one those would be, but he tells him, fear not.
- 29:53This also kind of gives us a glimpse into his emotional state, right?
- 29:59We can assume, and I'm not going to say verbatim, but we can assume that Joseph's internal state was afraid.
- 30:05He would have been hurt.
- 30:06I would have been confused with this kind of a situation.
- 30:10He was clearly worried about Mary's reputation, and he would have been worried about his own son, right?
- 30:18The angel reveals that Mary is innocent, doesn't it?
- 30:22Shows him that the child was of the Holy Spirit.
- 30:25And then it kind of gives him a command.
- 30:27He says, must take Mary as your wife.
- 30:30And Joseph, you must name him Jesus.
- 30:34Does anyone know what the name Jesus means or translates to?
- 30:40Savior?
- 30:41Yep.
- 30:43Yahweh saves.
- 30:45is the most direct literal translation of the name that you can get.
- 30:49So Jesus being completely anglicized from the Greek would be Yahweh saves or savior.
- 30:56Absolutely.
- 30:58That name would denote his entire mission on this planet, right?
- 31:01For Jesus came to seek and save the lost.
- 31:08I chose this verse, for He shall save His people from their sins, as the key verse for the entire chapter.
- 31:14In fact, this is the one that I made the boys memorize whenever we taught them this class.
- 31:19But we see prophecy fulfilled here, right?
- 31:23Everyone turn back over to Isaiah chapter 7 and verse 14.
- 31:29We're going to point back to the scripture that was prophesying that this would happen.
- 31:37Matthew is quoting Isaiah in Matthew chapter 1.
- 31:40Isaiah chapter 7 and verse 14.
- 31:53and bear a son shall call his name Immanuel.
- 31:58Well, which one was it?
- 31:59Was it Jesus or was it Immanuel?
- 32:04It can be both, right?
- 32:07Matthew quotes Isaiah that shows this birth fulfills the prophecy.
- 32:10A virgin shall conceive, his name shall be called Immanuel.
- 32:13And Immanuel, literally translated, simply means God with us, right?
- 32:19Be very similar to Yahweh saves.
- 32:22The Creator enters creation.
- 32:26We see it happen.
- 32:27God walks among his people and God becomes man, which brings us on to chapter four.
- 32:33I'm sorry, section four.
- 32:35Joseph's decision.
- 32:37This is going to be verses 24 and 25 of Matthew chapter one.
- 32:43Matthew one, 24 and 25.
- 32:46Then Joseph, being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife, and knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son, and
- 32:57he called his name Jesus.
- 33:02What does Joseph do the moment he wakes up from his dream?
- 33:11Runs to Mary.
- 33:12Does he obey?
- 33:14He obeys God.
- 33:15The moment he wakes up, he obeys God.
- 33:17Another testament to Joseph's character.
- 33:19He had a great character.
- 33:21He cared about Mary.
- 33:23He cared about himself.
- 33:25He wanted to do what was right.
- 33:26He didn't want to ruin someone's life.
- 33:28He wanted to think and pray about what he chose before he acted on it.
- 33:33Stand up, gentlemen.
- 33:36He names the child Jesus.
- 33:40Something I noted, it kind of stuck out to me when studying chapter one, was that we never see Joseph speak a single line in scripture.
- 33:50Nowhere in scripture does Joseph speak.
- 33:53He's simply just there.
- 33:54And we get a testimony of his character.
- 33:57Sometimes some of the best lessons we can learn is from someone who speaks less.
- 34:01Because actions speak louder than
- 34:05words, many, many times.
- 34:11That's right.
- 34:12That's right.
- 34:12would know.
- 34:13I put my foot in my mouth a lot.
- 34:17Of course.
- 34:19His actions declare his faith.
- 34:21He chooses God's reputation over his own reputation, doesn't he?
- 34:26Because if it got out, people would wonder, well, that's not your kid.
- 34:29You guys aren't even fully married yet.
- 34:30You're just betrothed.
- 34:33But he wants to protect God's reputation.
- 34:36That speaks volume of him.
- 34:39If we had to, we'll end the class on this because I know the bell just rang and we're right at getting to chapter two and we'll go through the priesthood in Mount Kizidek next
- 34:49time.
- 34:49But if you had to use one word to define Joseph, what would you use?
- 34:56Just would be a good one.
- 34:58Anyone else?
- 35:00I like the word obedience.
- 35:03to always see him do is obey.
- 35:06It's fantastic.
- 35:08All right.
- 35:09We've got just a minute or two left.
- 35:10Does anyone have any questions?
- 35:12I was just thinking, I don't know about you, but if an angel showed up to me and told me to do something, I kind of not change what I was told.
- 35:19Yeah.
- 35:20Well, what if he tells you, fear not?
- 35:22It's kind of a tall earth.
- 35:23We'll get an angel in the eye, right?
- 35:25Yeah.
- 35:26All right, thank you guys very much for your attention this morning.
- 35:28We'll continue about the Order of Melchizedek in Chapter 2 next class.
- 35:34Thank you.
