- 0:50Speaker 3: Nailed it.
- 0:58Speaker 4: I'm anything for good cause. I'm a security guard. I
- 1:06Speaker 4: kill people every fucking day.
- 1:09Speaker 3: That's right. When I was growing up in Bakersfield, my
- 1:12Speaker 3: favorite thing in all the world was to go to
- 1:14Speaker 3: the movies on Saturday afternoons for the chapter plays. I
- 1:18Speaker 3: know that, mister man. They also call them cereals. I'm
- 1:21Speaker 3: not stupid, you know.
- 1:23Speaker 4: I am the devil and I am here to do
- 1:26Speaker 4: the devil's work.
- 1:40Speaker 5: There's something unsettling about the quietness of summer camp. The
- 1:45Speaker 5: laughter fades, the woods grow still, and suddenly you're not
- 1:48Speaker 5: sure who's watching tonight. I'm Beyond the Blood. We're diving
- 1:52Speaker 5: back into Sleepaway Camp, the nineteen eighty three slasher that
- 1:55Speaker 5: turned childhood innocence into pure nightmare fuel. Joining us is
- 2:00Speaker 5: Karen Fields, Catherine Commie, and Thomas Fandel to talk about
- 2:04Speaker 5: long nights on set, the twisted creativity behind those unforgettable kills,
- 2:10Speaker 5: and how a small, low budget production became one of
- 2:13Speaker 5: horror's most enduring cult films. So light the fire, stay close,
- 2:17Speaker 5: and remember a camp arowhack. Nobody ever really leaves. Welcome
- 2:22Speaker 5: to Beyond the Blood.
- 2:26Speaker 6: Guys, on I go to that camp.
- 2:36Speaker 7: Be done that we ran, Judy, we ran that camp.
- 2:43Speaker 8: You guys did campes Hey.
- 2:48Speaker 6: Look, I don't want to I don't want to jump
- 2:50Speaker 6: the shark on the conversation here. But Judy, I think,
- 2:53Speaker 6: in my scope of horror films, is probably the most
- 2:59Speaker 6: evil villain of any Wow.
- 3:03Speaker 3: My heart is something. Thank you. That's such a.
- 3:08Speaker 9: It is.
- 3:09Speaker 8: It's the first time someone's been called evil and goes, oh,
- 3:11Speaker 8: thank you very much.
- 3:14Speaker 4: It is. I really appreciate diplomacy. I love that.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Girl. Well, I mean, come on, Meg is right about there.
- 3:23Speaker 9: Meg pretty much this She's following behind her finder.
- 3:29Speaker 8: And they're probably two of the sweetest people you will
- 3:32Speaker 8: ever come across. That's that's the truth. You never you'd
- 3:37Speaker 8: never think it. I don't know if that's it's good
- 3:39Speaker 8: or bad for marketing.
- 3:40Speaker 7: They were picture, they were play the opposite everybody, that's
- 3:46Speaker 7: the opposite of.
- 3:47Speaker 4: What you are.
- 3:47Speaker 9: Always that's more fun.
- 3:50Speaker 6: That's what they always said about Caine Hotter, you know,
- 3:53Speaker 6: who's one of the most notorious uh you know, and
- 3:57Speaker 6: every interview I see of that guy, I'm like, this
- 3:59Speaker 6: dude's a sweetheart, so.
- 4:01Speaker 7: Sweet, so sweet and so fun, and he enjoys his
- 4:04Speaker 7: fans so much.
- 4:06Speaker 3: True.
- 4:06Speaker 6: Yeah, that's I feel like you. I feel like you
- 4:09Speaker 6: kind of. I mean, I don't like when people say
- 4:12Speaker 6: that actors owe their fans something because I don't really
- 4:15Speaker 6: believe in that. But the horror fan base is so
- 4:19Speaker 6: dedicated and like, we we tend to take this stuff
- 4:24Speaker 6: to the next level and we really want to own
- 4:26Speaker 6: it in every way possible. Yeah, I'm sure for you
- 4:30Speaker 6: guys going to conventions and stuff, I'm sure you see
- 4:34Speaker 6: a lot of excited faces coming up every minute.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Absolutely, we never would have ever thought and it wouldn't
- 4:43Speaker 3: be this movie if it wasn't for the horror fans. Absolutely,
- 4:46Speaker 3: and in your mind, like my mind, horror horror people
- 4:49Speaker 3: probably are like horrible, you know, like they're probably like
- 4:53Speaker 3: very dark goth people. But everyone's so nice. Everyone's so friendly,
- 4:58Speaker 3: everyone's so appreciative. Everybody just like it's so kind to us,
- 5:02Speaker 3: Like it's just and I actually think we have such
- 5:04Speaker 3: a good time with them that it's true that we
- 5:07Speaker 3: are really having fun. And I think they sense that.
- 5:09Speaker 3: You know, every picture that our group pictures, everyone says
- 5:12Speaker 3: that we're the best cast. Like they just they do.
- 5:15Speaker 3: They say we have the most fun, right, We always
- 5:16Speaker 3: make everyone feel so good.
- 5:18Speaker 6: We just do it.
- 5:19Speaker 9: Yeah, it's true. It's it's great.
- 5:21Speaker 7: I mean, the first one I ever did, we were
- 5:23Speaker 7: together Karen and and it was I couldn't believe that
- 5:28Speaker 7: there was a line for our tables to talk to us.
- 5:30Speaker 7: And I mean it runs the gamut about there's lawyers
- 5:35Speaker 7: and doctors and firemen and librarians and just all sorts
- 5:38Speaker 7: of people, and I just it's incredible that we made
- 5:41Speaker 7: those people happy, and you don't take that for granted.
- 5:43Speaker 7: And just being able to talk to people face to
- 5:46Speaker 7: face is just a gift.
- 5:48Speaker 4: And it's the world which is fascinating.
- 5:51Speaker 8: And now, I mean, now we're we're I mean, for me,
- 5:54Speaker 8: it's been I haven't been doing it that long. Did
- 5:56Speaker 8: it for the anniversary sort of tour that we did
- 5:59Speaker 8: last year, And now I'm I'm just like smitten.
- 6:02Speaker 4: I love it. And we're friends with you know, our buddy.
- 6:05Speaker 8: Kent shows up and Pull and Kelly, and we talked
- 6:09Speaker 8: to those people like on a weekly basis because they're pals.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Now you know, oh no, yeah, they became good friends.
- 6:15Speaker 3: I mean I went to Kelly's apartment last you know
- 6:17Speaker 3: time I was in New York. I mean they became
- 6:19Speaker 3: good friends. I mean people really, I mean everyone was
- 6:22Speaker 3: just so nice. I mean when they come to convention
- 6:24Speaker 3: after convention, even though like I haven't been to many conventions, Tom,
- 6:27Speaker 3: I think that was wasn't that two years ago? We
- 6:29Speaker 3: did that whole Like is it.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Two years ago?
- 6:31Speaker 3: I'm messed up because of COVID.
- 6:35Speaker 4: I'm skipping. I'm actually I'm actually forty seven.
- 6:39Speaker 7: You're glitching, you're glitting I'm forty seven years old, because.
- 6:45Speaker 3: That's fun too. We get to Kathy and I put
- 6:48Speaker 3: our you know, costumes on, and I do decide ponytail,
- 6:51Speaker 3: and we do actually feel like we're sixteen, and we
- 6:54Speaker 3: love it. We just love it. Yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 5: I was going to ask you guys, like, when did
- 6:59Speaker 5: you guys first started like actively doing conventions like that, Like,
- 7:03Speaker 5: was after like a while after the film initially came out,
- 7:07Speaker 5: or when did things really like start picking up?
- 7:10Speaker 4: Oh?
- 7:10Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean Felssa's been doing it for quite a while.
- 7:12Speaker 7: Felissa ever forever. She's incredible. I mean she she's the
- 7:18Speaker 7: one who kind of really steamrolled this and got it
- 7:20Speaker 7: going and kept it going, and you know, and so
- 7:24Speaker 7: lovely to everybody that she became someone everyone wanted to meet,
- 7:28Speaker 7: you know, she the way she treats her fans. And
- 7:30Speaker 7: then I only started like a year before COVID, so
- 7:33Speaker 7: really not that long. And I think Karen and Tom similar, right,
- 7:36Speaker 7: I just I just didn't understand the world.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I started after you. I and I actually Sawtis at
- 7:41Speaker 3: a convention in California just randomly because my son was
- 7:46Speaker 3: helping out with makeup, and I was like, you know,
- 7:50Speaker 3: I can't do this, Like, I don't understand it. I
- 7:52Speaker 3: don't get why people would want to meet me. And
- 7:54Speaker 3: it took a while for her to like convince me
- 7:57Speaker 3: to and I even was very unsure when I'm I
- 8:00Speaker 3: was like, I don't know what this weekend is going
- 8:02Speaker 3: to be, Like we're just going to sit at our tables,
- 8:03Speaker 3: but at least we have each other. And yeah, but
- 8:06Speaker 3: it is true. Felisa's gone. She goes every weekend and
- 8:09Speaker 3: we are really lucky because people do love her, and
- 8:12Speaker 3: it's just like we are part of that, you know,
- 8:15Speaker 3: just because we are a part of her, this connection
- 8:17Speaker 3: we have and so it just expands to our luck
- 8:20Speaker 3: and you know that everyone loves us too, and it's.
- 8:24Speaker 8: Nice to see, Like for Lissa has been doing it
- 8:26Speaker 8: so long, it's nice to see that, you know, she
- 8:28Speaker 8: helped obviously raise her kids that way, and I mean
- 8:31Speaker 8: it's to see the benefit and to see somebody who
- 8:36Speaker 8: is so grateful for it and give so much back.
- 8:39Speaker 8: It's like, just as a human to watch that interaction
- 8:43Speaker 8: is pretty cool.
- 8:44Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. We've had so down the
- 8:47Speaker 6: road from me here in New Jersey, we have monster Mania,
- 8:50Speaker 6: which is one of the bigger.
- 8:52Speaker 4: We love.
- 8:53Speaker 9: We would love to go there.
- 8:55Speaker 3: We love because she goes every year. I know she does, yeah.
- 8:58Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, but I mean if you guys do, I'll
- 9:00Speaker 6: be the first one in line. I could throw a
- 9:05Speaker 6: rock and hit the venue.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Wow.
- 9:07Speaker 6: But every year, you know, going, It's pretty incredible because
- 9:11Speaker 6: you think, you know, there's a lot of horror fans
- 9:14Speaker 6: as a horror fan, and but it feels so singular
- 9:17Speaker 6: because I don't know a lot outside of my wife
- 9:20Speaker 6: like that I see in my day to day right,
- 9:21Speaker 6: because usually I'm the guy that's like, yeah, I love
- 9:24Speaker 6: horror movies and people are like, you know, they scare me,
- 9:27Speaker 6: and I'm like, Okay, I'm the weird one. Until I
- 9:30Speaker 6: go to a convention and I'm surrounded by people exactly
- 9:35Speaker 6: like me, and I have to say it's rare that
- 9:39Speaker 6: I feel more fit in ye than they're and these
- 9:43Speaker 6: are strangers. I know none of these people.
- 9:45Speaker 3: But no sense everyone's connected. It is crazy though, because
- 9:50Speaker 3: when we first did the movie, Horror wasn't really respected.
- 9:53Speaker 3: And now, I mean a twenty four everybody you see
- 9:56Speaker 3: all these huge celebrities they want to do horror. I
- 9:59Speaker 3: mean it's like we were there, like you know, a
- 10:01Speaker 3: long time ago, and it's just it's just so right away.
- 10:04Speaker 3: We didn't do conventions right away to get back to
- 10:06Speaker 3: that because it wasn't really like anything. It wasn't respected.
- 10:09Speaker 3: I didn't even put it on my I wasn't even
- 10:10Speaker 3: sure if I should put on my resume when I
- 10:12Speaker 3: went out, because it was kind of it was just embarrassing,
- 10:14Speaker 3: is this not I mean? And my family didn't value
- 10:16Speaker 3: it at all, So I got and neied. To my friends,
- 10:19Speaker 3: I had like not one I would have a praise.
- 10:22Speaker 3: So for me, I thought, this is embarrassing, this is
- 10:25Speaker 3: not something I want to share. So I would go
- 10:27Speaker 3: to auditions and they'd be like, oh, you know, make
- 10:29Speaker 3: it to the very end, and they'd be like, well,
- 10:31Speaker 3: she didn't do anything, so we'll take somebody who's more experienced,
- 10:33Speaker 3: and like it's just that kind of thing, like do
- 10:35Speaker 3: you share this? And now here we are, it's like,
- 10:37Speaker 3: this is mind blowing.
- 10:39Speaker 4: What was amazing was fangoria at the New Yorker.
- 10:43Speaker 8: That was for me like mind blowing because I you know,
- 10:48Speaker 8: I was living in Asia for a long time and
- 10:50Speaker 8: all of a sudden, I start getting these messages from.
- 10:51Speaker 4: My buddy Dan. He's like, there are all these websites.
- 10:54Speaker 8: The film so big, and I thought it had sort
- 10:57Speaker 8: of was bubbling under a little bit because I would
- 10:59Speaker 8: say vacations with the kids.
- 11:02Speaker 4: In Hilton Head, there was this little mom and.
- 11:04Speaker 8: Pop rental shop and it was always like every summer,
- 11:08Speaker 8: it was always like in the top three rentals.
- 11:09Speaker 4: And I was like, that is so strange. Why would
- 11:12Speaker 4: anybody watch this?
- 11:13Speaker 8: And then my buddy's sending me all these notes, all
- 11:15Speaker 8: these fan sites and everything else.
- 11:17Speaker 4: I'm like, this is crazy.
- 11:18Speaker 8: And then Robert invited us to Fangoria at the New
- 11:22Speaker 8: Yorker and I was living in New Hope, Pennsylvania at
- 11:26Speaker 8: the time. I turned around literally three times because of traffic.
- 11:29Speaker 8: I was like, forget this, I'm not going into the city.
- 11:31Speaker 4: I end up.
- 11:32Speaker 8: Going That ballroom was overflowing with people, and that's when
- 11:37Speaker 8: it blew my mind.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I was like, you've got to be kidding me. This
- 11:40Speaker 4: is insane.
- 11:42Speaker 8: So many years after yeah, and now there's gonna be
- 11:45Speaker 8: a whole new wa with the new with a new
- 11:48Speaker 8: remake being done.
- 11:50Speaker 4: And wow, it's gonna be pretty cool. It'll live on
- 11:54Speaker 4: well beyond us. Yeah.
- 11:57Speaker 7: I ran from it my whole career, my agents when
- 12:00Speaker 7: we don't put it on your resume, because when it
- 12:02Speaker 7: came out in nineteen eighty.
- 12:03Speaker 9: Three, it's three, didn't you know, nobody cared.
- 12:06Speaker 7: It was just not And so I was like, okay, well,
- 12:10Speaker 7: I you know, you have to choose back then, whether
- 12:12Speaker 7: you're going to be a serious actor, you know, or
- 12:14Speaker 7: television or whatever. And so I thought, well, no, I
- 12:16Speaker 7: don't because I did another horror film after that, called
- 12:19Speaker 7: Silent Madness, and I didn't want to just do horror
- 12:21Speaker 7: because I didn't want to be pigeonholed because that wasn't
- 12:24Speaker 7: a you know, it wasn't a great thing to be then,
- 12:26Speaker 7: and so I ran from it. So, you know, flash
- 12:29Speaker 7: forward twenty thirty years and all of a sudden, you know,
- 12:32Speaker 7: we're hearing buzz and you know, Felssa contacts and says
- 12:37Speaker 7: you got to come out and see what's happening, and
- 12:39Speaker 7: it just blew my mind.
- 12:40Speaker 8: But what surprised me as well, which I didn't know
- 12:42Speaker 8: until years after, was that, like when it came out
- 12:46Speaker 8: that that year and I think it was around Thanksgiving,
- 12:49Speaker 8: right it, and it went up in New York. I
- 12:52Speaker 8: think it went up against like Yentle and beat Yentle,
- 12:57Speaker 8: they bicycled the release, you know, they did New York
- 13:00Speaker 8: and then they did they did whatever Jersey and Maryland
- 13:03Speaker 8: and bicycle these prints around and it was doing business.
- 13:07Speaker 8: So if it had, if it had some real p
- 13:10Speaker 8: and a funding behind it, I think even then it
- 13:13Speaker 8: would have found its audience, you know.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, that's bigger. Now it's actually for us and about.
- 13:21Speaker 8: To be about to be you know, I hate using
- 13:24Speaker 8: the word, but you know, sort of mainstream in the
- 13:27Speaker 8: horror space, I guess with this news, you know.
- 13:31Speaker 6: And pretty what's funny? What's funny too, especially in comparison
- 13:35Speaker 6: to like what was surrounding sleep Away Camp, you know,
- 13:38Speaker 6: Friday thirteenth, Halloween before and what came after eighty three,
- 13:41Speaker 6: which was really when the excess really started coming in.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Uh.
- 13:45Speaker 6: Watching sleep Away Camp now is actually kind of funny
- 13:47Speaker 6: because it's very subdued compared to most around the time.
- 13:53Speaker 6: Like the kill sequences are very brutal. There's incredible makeup
- 13:57Speaker 6: effects and they're like it stays with you. But this
- 14:02Speaker 6: is a movie that doesn't have nudity. There's no nudity
- 14:07Speaker 6: besides the ending shot, right, it's very clean for the
- 14:10Speaker 6: most part. Yeah, Yeah, and it's It's funny watching it
- 14:14Speaker 6: because as I'm watching it, I'm like, I feel like
- 14:16Speaker 6: I was watching it and I'm like, I feel like
- 14:17Speaker 6: there was I was like, why did I think this was?
- 14:20Speaker 6: Like there was more to this, Like this was more,
- 14:23Speaker 6: but I wasn't. Not in a bad way, you know.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Yeah, No, it's interesting. Even though guys, you know, they
- 14:27Speaker 3: were the short shorts and then the tank tops, but
- 14:29Speaker 3: that's actually what they wore in the eighties.
- 14:35Speaker 9: There was some app shots of the boys, right, they
- 14:37Speaker 9: did a.
- 14:37Speaker 6: Moon thing, right, Yeah. There was the skinny dipping scene, yeah,
- 14:43Speaker 6: which is yeah, the only nudity is like six dudes
- 14:46Speaker 6: running in the water.
- 14:48Speaker 4: He don't don't forget my asp don't.
- 14:50Speaker 5: Forget my Yeah, chrislay it.
- 14:54Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 14:56Speaker 6: I tried.
- 14:57Speaker 9: I tried to get there.
- 14:58Speaker 8: That's how I got my big gay following.
- 15:05Speaker 3: From the very beginning of the movie. You know, even
- 15:07Speaker 3: with you know, obviously already is disgusting talking about the
- 15:10Speaker 3: baldies and the what you know, it's so it is there,
- 15:13Speaker 3: but it is not undressed. It is there obviously, the
- 15:16Speaker 3: closet with you know, the food pantry everywhere, you know,
- 15:19Speaker 3: Judy got big whatever, it is consistent. Meg and Meil like,
- 15:23Speaker 3: how oft is that?
- 15:24Speaker 4: You know?
- 15:24Speaker 3: So it's consistently there, but you're not really hit in
- 15:28Speaker 3: the face with it, right actually, But in fact it's
- 15:31Speaker 3: way before that, because I haven't watched the movie in
- 15:33Speaker 3: a long time. Of course, the two dads, so it's
- 15:35Speaker 3: like all throughout there is a connection to you know, sexuality.
- 15:39Speaker 8: And it's in the Guinness Book of Records that the
- 15:41Speaker 8: Megan mel thing. I think it was the first introduction
- 15:45Speaker 8: of a May to October romance, and I think I
- 15:50Speaker 8: don't know if that's a fact.
- 15:51Speaker 4: I looked it up. I thought it was somewhere.
- 15:54Speaker 9: Those lips, those lips on mail.
- 15:56Speaker 4: You know, I had to compete with that. Yeah, I
- 16:01Speaker 4: lost out.
- 16:02Speaker 5: Well, I was going to ask I was going to
- 16:04Speaker 5: ask you guys, what was your first impression like reading
- 16:08Speaker 5: the Sleepway Camp script, Like, did you guys, I mean,
- 16:10Speaker 5: I know, you know, taking it back, did you guys?
- 16:12Speaker 5: Since it was going to be something so unique within
- 16:15Speaker 5: like the slasher boom of the early eighties, or like
- 16:18Speaker 5: what kind of caught your eye about that specific script.
- 16:23Speaker 3: You want to talk?
- 16:24Speaker 4: Oh?
- 16:25Speaker 7: Yeah, no, I mean, I you know, it was just
- 16:27Speaker 7: it was I was working on a soap at the time,
- 16:29Speaker 7: so it was just another audition, but I did want
- 16:31Speaker 7: to go into film, so I was very excited, and
- 16:33Speaker 7: horror film seemed fun and interesting and and the whole
- 16:38Speaker 7: filming at a camp, I mean, everything seemed cool.
- 16:40Speaker 9: The script seemed great, so I didn't No one could.
- 16:44Speaker 7: Have realized what was going to happen, you know, and
- 16:46Speaker 7: how I was going to And I don't recall knowing
- 16:48Speaker 7: the ending. I mean I knew, yeah, I don't call
- 16:52Speaker 7: knowing the ending, so you know that that kind of
- 16:54Speaker 7: blew me away.
- 16:55Speaker 9: When we did find out.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Did he give us the ending?
- 16:57Speaker 9: I can't remember having it right now?
- 17:01Speaker 4: Still has the original? You still have the original script?
- 17:04Speaker 3: Right I do? That's all of our auditions to find
- 17:09Speaker 3: my old passport improv so we didn't do we we
- 17:12Speaker 3: all did didn't read lines like you know a lot
- 17:14Speaker 3: of auditions are script and we all did improv. So
- 17:17Speaker 3: that and then I did never saw it until I
- 17:19Speaker 3: got on set, but liked like I would have taken
- 17:22Speaker 3: anything because I was, you know, young, and I want
- 17:24Speaker 3: to be actress as my dream, and who would have
- 17:26Speaker 3: thought that, you know, I would never think anything whatever
- 17:28Speaker 3: if it was good about it, you know, I just
- 17:29Speaker 3: wanted to do it and have fun.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it did seem like a fun read.
- 17:33Speaker 8: I remember reading it going like, you know, I looked
- 17:35Speaker 8: at it very sort of innocently.
- 17:37Speaker 4: I think I looked at it like I'll do this
- 17:39Speaker 4: one time.
- 17:41Speaker 8: You know, I'm young, and I mean, obviously it's different
- 17:43Speaker 8: for for for Kathy.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Years used Big Soap Star at the time. For me,
- 17:47Speaker 4: it was different.
- 17:48Speaker 8: I was like, I'll do this and and hang out
- 17:51Speaker 8: for a few weeks someplace nice.
- 17:53Speaker 4: And you know, on a lake. But then I read it,
- 17:55Speaker 4: I was like, I was like, this is actually going
- 17:57Speaker 4: to be fun.
- 17:58Speaker 8: You know, this is the baseball scene there, softball scenes,
- 18:01Speaker 8: all this stuff by the lake. I was just.
- 18:10Speaker 4: I could do that.
- 18:11Speaker 9: Robot Codd lost Tom for a moment.
- 18:14Speaker 7: We can we can fill that gap.
- 18:20Speaker 8: I'm not rolling my eyes. I keep looking up at
- 18:22Speaker 8: the at the Yankees because.
- 18:27Speaker 4: She said she goes on twenty on the Yankees best
- 18:33Speaker 4: the House.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I knew it.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Well.
- 18:38Speaker 5: I was gonna mention like, so, you know, upon rewatch
- 18:42Speaker 5: and the countless times we've seen this before, like the
- 18:44Speaker 5: atmosphere of the camp feels so authentic, Like, what was
- 18:48Speaker 5: it like filming location? Did you guys have any memories
- 18:51Speaker 5: that you felt like capture the spirit of that summer,
- 18:54Speaker 5: Like when you guys were filming.
- 18:57Speaker 3: I always remember them the spray painting the leaves because
- 19:00Speaker 3: it was it was Robert's camp, but it was like
- 19:02Speaker 3: I guess it was September. I don't know what month
- 19:04Speaker 3: it was, but the leaves had already changed, like changed
- 19:06Speaker 3: the phone and they had to spray Pinton green. I
- 19:09Speaker 3: remember that and like thinking, oh, this is just magical.
- 19:14Speaker 3: You could see whatever you want, make it, make it
- 19:16Speaker 3: wherever it is, how you want it.
- 19:17Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, I remember. Uh. It was my first role.
- 19:22Speaker 7: I just turned eighteen, so it was my first one
- 19:24Speaker 7: on my own without a parent there, and so that
- 19:27Speaker 7: was kind of fun, staying overnight in a motel you
- 19:30Speaker 7: know where we were filming, So it was it was
- 19:32Speaker 7: really like kids at camp, you know.
- 19:35Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I just want to say real quick, Tom,
- 19:37Speaker 6: your mic is muted. If you just want to hit
- 19:40Speaker 6: uh at the bottom, there should be a little mic
- 19:43Speaker 6: button just say we can get you back there we go.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Ah, sorry about that. It wasn't the whole time.
- 19:49Speaker 8: Just Chris, just feel free to edit be right out.
- 19:52Speaker 8: It's just I have nothing really constructive to add to this.
- 19:55Speaker 8: So if you want to go back to the beginning
- 19:57Speaker 8: and be you know, past the intro, you can set.
- 20:03Speaker 6: I would never we would never do that.
- 20:06Speaker 5: I do want to say, I do want to say.
- 20:10Speaker 6: In so B. R. Flynn is the author of the novelization,
- 20:13Speaker 6: and he did a fantastic job kind of building upon
- 20:17Speaker 6: what's there in the movie. But I know he also
- 20:19Speaker 6: used an earlier draft of the script that was pretty
- 20:23Speaker 6: much like what was there. And one thing I found interesting,
- 20:27Speaker 6: one little tiny note that he added is the introduction
- 20:30Speaker 6: of Meg is found doing a bump of cocaine in
- 20:35Speaker 6: the bathroom before coming out to.
- 20:37Speaker 4: Speak to Never heard that, have you ever?
- 20:40Speaker 3: Kathy's never heard that.
- 20:45Speaker 6: In the novelization. Yes, in the novelization. But when you
- 20:49Speaker 6: come out to talk to the campers, like your introduction
- 20:53Speaker 6: right right right the scene the scene starts that I
- 20:59Speaker 6: think he would do that. I'm here, it's the energy.
- 21:04Speaker 8: Yes, she would do that, you said, Chris, You said
- 21:06Speaker 8: that was in an earlier draft of the script.
- 21:09Speaker 6: I get so supposedly from what I found. B. R.
- 21:12Speaker 6: Flynn wrote, based on an earlier draft of.
- 21:14Speaker 8: This, We're going to get that draft from Robert. Who
- 21:21Speaker 8: knows what other nuggets are in there.
- 21:23Speaker 9: That's great. Yeah, I've never heard that. Amazing.
- 21:26Speaker 6: I just for the record, I want to say it
- 21:28Speaker 6: could have just been something that he added because very well,
- 21:32Speaker 6: but if it was either way, when it didn't like
- 21:37Speaker 6: I forgot that it doesn't happen in the movie, and
- 21:40Speaker 6: I was a little disappointed when it didn't happen in
- 21:42Speaker 6: the movie.
- 21:43Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Maybe that would have been too
- 21:46Speaker 9: far around the kids and stuff like that.
- 21:49Speaker 4: Character needed any more edge. Exactly right.
- 21:54Speaker 3: You don't have anything from the you don't have your scripts,
- 21:57Speaker 3: you don't have anything from the movie.
- 22:00Speaker 9: I don't think so. I don't think so.
- 22:01Speaker 3: I have all the dailies.
- 22:05Speaker 9: Pictures, some photos, but I mean, do.
- 22:07Speaker 3: You have the I have the dailies. I have the dailies.
- 22:11Speaker 3: I have like the receipt from like I guess back
- 22:13Speaker 3: then we had to maybe it's a receipt for like
- 22:15Speaker 3: calling home or something like did we have to use
- 22:18Speaker 3: the phone and like call home? And y I think
- 22:22Speaker 3: I have that.
- 22:24Speaker 9: Of the movie when it came out.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Next time.
- 22:29Speaker 6: Amazing, there you guys go, I actually found it. So
- 22:32Speaker 6: I have I have the novel right in my hand,
- 22:36Speaker 6: and it says right here it says, uh, let's see,
- 22:40Speaker 6: it says, uh, let's see. Shouldn't say that. They only
- 22:44Speaker 6: looked at each other for a brief moment as Meg
- 22:46Speaker 6: sniffed and rubbed her nose once again. Oh yeah, it
- 22:49Speaker 6: says Meg, whose head was leaning over the sink, stiffened
- 22:52Speaker 6: up and rubbed her nose, sniffing. Her novels were red
- 22:55Speaker 6: and her eyes weren't much better, though they were big
- 22:58Speaker 6: and wide. That is your introduction.
- 23:00Speaker 7: Oh my god, Well it was the averages.
- 23:04Speaker 4: The eighties up in the woods, n upstate New York.
- 23:08Speaker 9: Yeah, that would be weird, Like how would she have
- 23:10Speaker 9: gotten it? And like, yeah, that's weird.
- 23:13Speaker 7: And and but then I mean, yeah, I mean maybe
- 23:16Speaker 7: I see. I still think they think that would have
- 23:18Speaker 7: been pushing it too far.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Put on, she got it from Mel, That's what I think.
- 23:23Speaker 9: I think she got mail. We're going to go off
- 23:26Speaker 9: and do it, mad.
- 23:26Speaker 4: I express, Yeah, doesn't fall far from that track.
- 23:29Speaker 9: That's right.
- 23:30Speaker 7: She could have been her, she couldn't make could have
- 23:33Speaker 7: been Mel's like dealer or something, you know.
- 23:35Speaker 8: Yeah yeah, oh yeah, a little extra cash to keep
- 23:38Speaker 8: yeah yeah yeah, all those nine and ten year.
- 23:42Speaker 9: Olds, Oh my god, crazy wow.
- 23:46Speaker 4: Customers get the customers.
- 23:47Speaker 7: Early here though, like all the little things that didn't
- 23:51Speaker 7: make it in.
- 23:53Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah, it's like I I just thought of me
- 23:54Speaker 6: like using the lake is like a channel to get
- 23:57Speaker 6: stuff in, you know what I mean. Uh No, the
- 24:00Speaker 6: novelization is great because it expands It's actually so I
- 24:05Speaker 6: was telling Steve earlier that I actually think the novel
- 24:08Speaker 6: made the movie better because of what it expands upon.
- 24:12Speaker 6: It gives it a very different Yeah, it gives it
- 24:16Speaker 6: much more context, especially in the thoughts of Angela, like
- 24:20Speaker 6: you're in her head very very much. But the way
- 24:23Speaker 6: that it expands on certain things. It even contains an
- 24:25Speaker 6: additional scene after the death of Angela's parents and going
- 24:31Speaker 6: into like the first experience with the aunt and kind
- 24:34Speaker 6: of her talking about showing her the dresses that he
- 24:38Speaker 6: bought and all of that. Suff it really dives in differently.
- 24:42Speaker 3: But I would agree that because it sounds interesting, because
- 24:44Speaker 3: it sounds like it actually besides the motivation of each character,
- 24:50Speaker 3: because you know, you don't really know watching the film
- 24:55Speaker 3: why Aunt Martha does that. You can only surmise in
- 24:58Speaker 3: your own head. Well, maybe he just wanted a girl
- 25:01Speaker 3: because you know, there was Ricky and she wanted a difference.
- 25:04Speaker 3: But if you're going to somebody's head, then you or
- 25:07Speaker 3: you going into Angela's head Peter's head, then you would
- 25:10Speaker 3: know whether or not he was or was not what
- 25:16Speaker 3: he was thinking about his gender because you so In fact,
- 25:23Speaker 3: I think a movie in that sense is more interesting
- 25:25Speaker 3: because there's so much conversation we could have about the
- 25:28Speaker 3: fact that it's not decided for the viewer when you're
- 25:31Speaker 3: reading it. If that is the case of this, it
- 25:33Speaker 3: sounds very interesting. But it also sounds like you're getting
- 25:36Speaker 3: the facts as this person's presenting them, whereas we as
- 25:39Speaker 3: actors had to make our decisions and you have to
- 25:41Speaker 3: come up with what you think the motivation is. And
- 25:44Speaker 3: therefore we have multiple years of conversations because because it's
- 25:48Speaker 3: always deriving a different you know, the atmosphere right now.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Of course, we always go back to transgender and is
- 25:54Speaker 3: it a film about transgender? Is it is Peter you know?
- 25:57Speaker 3: Or is gender something that gender is something that you've
- 26:00Speaker 3: to decide yourself. So did he go crazy because he
- 26:03Speaker 3: wasn't able to decide himself? But if you're in Peter's
- 26:05Speaker 3: head and you can hear whether or not he's like, Wow,
- 26:08Speaker 3: I'm really a boy. I'm really a girl. Like whatever
- 26:11Speaker 3: it takes for me, it sounds like it would take
- 26:14Speaker 3: away a lot of the mystery of the and the
- 26:18Speaker 3: aura of the film.
- 26:20Speaker 8: But I think, well, sorry, but I think what happens
- 26:22Speaker 8: is that you know, there's really one person that knows
- 26:26Speaker 8: that you know, the backstory of the characters, the the intention,
- 26:31Speaker 8: everything about them is the writer, right, So Robert No,
- 26:35Speaker 8: same thing with Quentin Tarantino. Quentin Tarantino knows the backstory
- 26:39Speaker 8: of every one of his characters, the motivation of every
- 26:41Speaker 8: one of his characters. Never lets the actors know, but
- 26:44Speaker 8: he knows everything.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Yeah, but which is amazing.
- 26:49Speaker 8: The same thing probably with this. But I'm excited to read.
- 26:52Speaker 8: I'm not excited.
- 26:53Speaker 4: I know I am too.
- 26:54Speaker 3: But when you turn over the script to the actor,
- 26:55Speaker 3: if you're directing them, you will give them that guidance
- 26:58Speaker 3: if you want them to have it. But if you
- 27:01Speaker 3: Robert never said, at least to me, like you are
- 27:04Speaker 3: mean because of this, like I had to make my own.
- 27:08Speaker 4: He didn't. He didn't. He didn't have to give.
- 27:10Speaker 3: You no, but you know what I mean?
- 27:13Speaker 4: But yeah, thanks, what's interesting in the movie.
- 27:21Speaker 6: Br Flynn, the author of the novel is trans okay.
- 27:26Speaker 6: He brings this incredible perspective, especially to Peter in that
- 27:32Speaker 6: earlier part of the book, because it's a scene that
- 27:33Speaker 6: we don't see in the movie where there is this
- 27:36Speaker 6: sense of confusion, where there is this sense of kind
- 27:39Speaker 6: of like Peter sittinger and he's questioning, why is she
- 27:42Speaker 6: pulling out address? Why is she pulling out these things?
- 27:46Speaker 6: And especially once you have once you're in the head
- 27:49Speaker 6: of Angela and she's and older, there's these constant there's
- 27:54Speaker 6: this constant fear of almost being exposed, like instead of
- 27:58Speaker 6: instead of us going like, oh, Angela must not like
- 28:01Speaker 6: the water. That's why would make throws r and she
- 28:04Speaker 6: freaks it must not like the water. In the book,
- 28:06Speaker 6: there's this fear of being seen some sort of way,
- 28:11Speaker 6: and that's why it doesn't If I had just read
- 28:14Speaker 6: this book on its own, it would not be as
- 28:16Speaker 6: powerful as the movie is. But as a companion and
- 28:20Speaker 6: as an expansion of the movie, it actually makes the movie.
- 28:25Speaker 6: It actually builds upon it better, if that makes sense.
- 28:29Speaker 6: I feel like I'm kind of rampant.
- 28:30Speaker 4: I mean, but what a what a nice compliment to
- 28:33Speaker 4: the author?
- 28:34Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 28:35Speaker 4: And I know because how many.
- 28:36Speaker 8: Times, how many times. Is that the case very rarely, Yeah,
- 28:41Speaker 8: but that's usually nothing.
- 28:42Speaker 4: New that.
- 28:44Speaker 3: He said, we could go over each other and like,
- 28:46Speaker 3: I'm cutting you off. No, I'm not putting the book down.
- 28:49Speaker 3: I'm just saying any movie any but I not cosplay.
- 28:55Speaker 3: You know when the fan fiction, any fansiction is from
- 29:00Speaker 3: the writer's point of view, and that is fascinating and
- 29:02Speaker 3: wonderful about a transwriter is writing this because maybe in
- 29:06Speaker 3: reading what the trans writer has to say, we are
- 29:08Speaker 3: getting an insight into what it is to be transgender,
- 29:11Speaker 3: and that is a gift to me. I think that's
- 29:13Speaker 3: a gift to the world. So I raised that writer
- 29:16Speaker 3: for for putting themselves out there and their feelings about
- 29:22Speaker 3: what they probably were going through or what they know
- 29:25Speaker 3: their friends to be going through. Because the should I
- 29:27Speaker 3: tell the secret share?
- 29:28Speaker 4: Why I would?
- 29:28Speaker 6: I have a say?
- 29:29Speaker 3: How do I feel about this? And that may be
- 29:31Speaker 3: a huge gift on its own. But then again, it
- 29:35Speaker 3: might not have been what you know, FeliCa chose to
- 29:37Speaker 3: think about when she was Peter Angela. She might have
- 29:39Speaker 3: had a whole different thought process going on which made
- 29:42Speaker 3: her character, you know, fabulous.
- 29:45Speaker 4: The point is we have to read it.
- 29:47Speaker 3: The point is where do we buy this book?
- 29:49Speaker 8: Where Chris Chris did just just out of curiosity and
- 29:53Speaker 8: don't put this in the in the thing.
- 29:54Speaker 4: But before we.
- 29:58Speaker 8: Before we gave the writer the rights, had a request,
- 30:00Speaker 8: did he put my my love making scene with a
- 30:03Speaker 8: young Charlie Stron in the in the book at all?
- 30:06Speaker 4: Or was that in there?
- 30:09Speaker 6: I don't. I think I blocked that scene out.
- 30:11Speaker 4: You didn't put that in. I'm just sure.
- 30:14Speaker 8: I guess I'll read it. I guess if it's in there.
- 30:16Speaker 8: If it's in there, then I guess it's in there.
- 30:18Speaker 8: If not, it was one of the contractual sort of
- 30:37Speaker 8: it's my intention, I always felt, because we had many
- 30:40Speaker 8: opportunities to go and do it. But it was always
- 30:45Speaker 8: a little hard for me because I know how special
- 30:48Speaker 8: it was for Robert for sure, and his family. You know,
- 30:52Speaker 8: he really started in it. So it wasn't even though
- 30:55Speaker 8: maybe I could have made the decision to say, listen,
- 30:57Speaker 8: let's go do this, you know, at low budget way
- 31:00Speaker 8: with this person or that person, or even you know,
- 31:03Speaker 8: at a at a studio level budget and and give
- 31:05Speaker 8: it to Netflix or whatever, I always felt a little
- 31:08Speaker 8: bit bad that he wouldn't because he was just so
- 31:11Speaker 8: intent on wanting to direct and so intent on wanting
- 31:15Speaker 8: the continuation to be his story. I always felt a
- 31:18Speaker 8: little bit bad about that, so I'm super to be
- 31:22Speaker 8: honest with me, I'm super super happy that we're going
- 31:27Speaker 8: in direction, we're going with him ously. I'm a producer
- 31:30Speaker 8: on the film as well, the new version, so I'm
- 31:33Speaker 8: super happy that it that it worked out the way
- 31:35Speaker 8: it did. I think everything works out the way it's
- 31:36Speaker 8: supposed to, and I think he's gonna do a fabulous job.
- 31:40Speaker 4: And I think I think Keenan, you know, Keenan his
- 31:42Speaker 4: team are going to do a fantastic job.
- 31:44Speaker 8: And and one of the things is he's he's agreed
- 31:47Speaker 8: to do the good Burger thing for one of my
- 31:49Speaker 8: grandkids at the birthday party, so that was part of
- 31:54Speaker 8: that was part of the thing. I don't have it
- 31:56Speaker 8: in writing of one of his people told one of
- 31:59Speaker 8: my people, So I'm kind of hoping.
- 32:02Speaker 4: I'm kind of.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Hoping that that interesting.
- 32:07Speaker 4: I don't want to give into.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Definitely want to part because you just told us you're
- 32:12Speaker 3: a producer, so.
- 32:15Speaker 9: We know who to kiss off.
- 32:19Speaker 5: You're on the hook now.
- 32:22Speaker 3: I'm super I'm super happy for without Megan Judy, though, honestly, you.
- 32:26Speaker 8: Think I want, that's up to that's up to That's
- 32:29Speaker 8: up to people who are far smarter than me.
- 32:31Speaker 4: But I will weigh I will, I will be weighing in.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Okay, Well, you know said so much fun, We would
- 32:39Speaker 3: have so much fun.
- 32:41Speaker 6: Well, to answer your question, Karen, you just said, what
- 32:43Speaker 6: would you know? What would it be without Megan Judy?
- 32:45Speaker 6: The main character is only as strong with the is
- 32:48Speaker 6: only as strong as the secondary characters. I even hate
- 32:51Speaker 6: the term secondary characters because for for as memorable as
- 32:57Speaker 6: Angela is, so is Meg, so is Judy, so is Mike,
- 33:02Speaker 6: so is everybody else. Thank you pair it up? You
- 33:05Speaker 6: know what I mean? And you know for we actually tried.
- 33:09Speaker 6: We tried to get Felicia for this. We we reached
- 33:12Speaker 6: out a couple of times. We just weren't able to
- 33:15Speaker 6: get in contact. And it was one of those things
- 33:16Speaker 6: where we were like, dude, like I don't Honestly, it
- 33:20Speaker 6: got to a point where I was like, I was like,
- 33:22Speaker 6: I'm look. I was like, I'm stoked just as much
- 33:25Speaker 6: to have who we have.
- 33:26Speaker 4: I was like, should we try her now?
- 33:29Speaker 3: No?
- 33:31Speaker 7: She literally works seven days a week, twenty four seven,
- 33:34Speaker 7: Like if she and if she's not she's with her kids,
- 33:36Speaker 7: and she's just always either filming or doing a convention
- 33:40Speaker 7: on the weekends.
- 33:42Speaker 4: Here.
- 33:45Speaker 9: Yeah she's oh yeah.
- 33:46Speaker 6: There is zero like animosity towards her. Like we we
- 33:51Speaker 6: were just like we were like actually honestly, I was
- 33:54Speaker 6: kind of hoping like we could and then we could
- 33:56Speaker 6: have like surprised you guys when she popped up. We
- 33:59Speaker 6: thought that would be cool. But the main character, as
- 34:03Speaker 6: I said, is only as strong as the secondary characters.
- 34:05Speaker 6: And for me, Judy was just so not even not
- 34:12Speaker 6: even mean. I want to say, I don't know if
- 34:14Speaker 6: like despicable is the right term. Like this there's like.
- 34:22Speaker 5: For me.
- 34:23Speaker 6: For me though, as a kid, I think we all
- 34:26Speaker 6: had a Judy that, like you know what I mean,
- 34:29Speaker 6: we all want everybody everybody knew one. So there's that,
- 34:34Speaker 6: there's that, you know, there's like that almost like that
- 34:37Speaker 6: memory of who was like that when we were kids.
- 34:40Speaker 6: But also in my neighborhood, we had a Meg who
- 34:43Speaker 6: was like the somebody's one of our friend groups like
- 34:46Speaker 6: older sister, careful, Chris, listen, listen, only only get myself
- 34:54Speaker 6: in trouble here we we in my little neighborhood, we
- 35:01Speaker 6: had one it was it was somebody one of our
- 35:02Speaker 6: friends older sister who always was like the party pooper,
- 35:06Speaker 6: you know what I mean. It was we always got
- 35:07Speaker 6: in trouble, like it was just what it was. So
- 35:10Speaker 6: beside characters, I always felt more attachment with anyways, if
- 35:16Speaker 6: that means they're relatable.
- 35:17Speaker 5: I think a lot of the like you can attach.
- 35:20Speaker 5: You know, everyone knows like someone in your life that
- 35:23Speaker 5: maybe is similar to like one of the characters personalities.
- 35:26Speaker 5: And one thing I was gonna bring up with you guys, like,
- 35:29Speaker 5: you know, as far as like with your characters, how
- 35:31Speaker 5: did the cast dynamic evolve off camera? Like did you
- 35:34Speaker 5: guys have chemistry you know off camera that translated into
- 35:38Speaker 5: the film's tone, like when you guys were were rolling.
- 35:42Speaker 3: I just think we all were very comfortable with each
- 35:44Speaker 3: other off round, so it just flowed.
- 35:47Speaker 8: Yeah, that's true, because we hung out. I mean even
- 35:49Speaker 8: when we weren't feeling we hung out on set, you.
- 35:53Speaker 7: Know, yeah, absolutely, And I think we were kind of
- 35:57Speaker 7: the older group, Tom Karen and.
- 36:01Speaker 4: Rick.
- 36:02Speaker 7: Yes, Rick and we kind of hung out because we
- 36:04Speaker 7: were sort of eighteen and over close to that. And
- 36:06Speaker 7: then you know, Felissa and Jonathan played Ricky were all,
- 36:10Speaker 7: you know, Chris, they were all like thirteen fourteen years old,
- 36:13Speaker 7: so they kind of hung out on their own, and
- 36:16Speaker 7: we didn't you know, we didn't want to be bad
- 36:18Speaker 7: influences on them.
- 36:19Speaker 4: So, but I mean, you know, in the hotel as well, Chris.
- 36:23Speaker 8: I mean it was basically, you know, like an old
- 36:25Speaker 8: school motel that had the drive going through two buildings
- 36:31Speaker 8: on each side. Yeah, and I think the older kids
- 36:33Speaker 8: we were on one side with the crew, I think, yeah,
- 36:36Speaker 8: and then the younger kids were on the other side. Yeah,
- 36:38Speaker 8: you know, so you'd sort of congregate even at the hotel.
- 36:41Speaker 4: All the time. Yeah. And we we were we were
- 36:44Speaker 4: together all the time. Yeah. I mean Kathy was leaving,
- 36:47Speaker 4: you know, because we'd see the limo pol up.
- 36:49Speaker 8: She was leaving quite a bit to do her you know,
- 36:53Speaker 8: her stuff and to go eat eat lobster at like
- 36:59Speaker 8: Le Cirque or something, you know, while we were while
- 37:01Speaker 8: we were having three day old.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Really at the camp everybody flies. Yeah, she had she
- 37:12Speaker 4: had on this film.
- 37:14Speaker 7: The only way ABC I was on, the only way
- 37:16Speaker 7: they would let me do the film was if they
- 37:18Speaker 7: said they would drive me there like and then bring
- 37:21Speaker 7: me back to film the soap. So I mean I
- 37:24Speaker 7: stayed there, but when I had to come back, they
- 37:26Speaker 7: would send a car for me to come back and
- 37:28Speaker 7: flo are the days those are?
- 37:32Speaker 8: I think I think it was I can't remember how
- 37:35Speaker 8: long it was, but it was like one, two six
- 37:38Speaker 8: hotel rooms.
- 37:40Speaker 4: Like yeah, I wish.
- 37:44Speaker 5: No, I know we were talking about this earlier, kind
- 37:47Speaker 5: of comeing full circle. But as far as like, did
- 37:50Speaker 5: you guys have any creative input into how your characters
- 37:53Speaker 5: were like portrayed or was it very much scripted and
- 37:57Speaker 5: directed like a specific like way for each character?
- 38:01Speaker 4: Good question.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Think that Robert gave me free range to do the
- 38:05Speaker 3: lines the way I wanted to do the lines, but
- 38:07Speaker 3: those were his lines. I didn't impro any words. He
- 38:12Speaker 3: wrote all those beautiful words for me.
- 38:14Speaker 8: But yeah, I think we kind of there was some
- 38:17Speaker 8: ad libbing, you know, when you had scenes like the
- 38:20Speaker 8: water balloon scene and things like that, there was some
- 38:23Speaker 8: ad libbing and he didn't put which I kind of
- 38:28Speaker 8: like when I redescript, even as a producer, I hate
- 38:30Speaker 8: when there's just, you know, the page after page of
- 38:34Speaker 8: sort of descriptions and exposition.
- 38:37Speaker 4: He didn't put a lot of that in, So I
- 38:38Speaker 4: think that created an atmosphere too.
- 38:40Speaker 8: Where as far as your actions within a scene, it
- 38:45Speaker 8: was free reign, you know what I mean. It didn't
- 38:48Speaker 8: say or just the Meg did this prior to her
- 38:52Speaker 8: line or any of that. I mean, there was very
- 38:54Speaker 8: little of that, which I think kind of made it spontaneous.
- 38:58Speaker 8: Like the fight scenes and all those things, they were
- 39:00Speaker 8: just natural, you know.
- 39:03Speaker 4: In the way they were they were shot. It was
- 39:05Speaker 4: pretty cool.
- 39:06Speaker 7: And he and and I'm the kind of actor I
- 39:11Speaker 7: was or am coming out of being a childhood actor
- 39:13Speaker 7: and kind of starting to go into adult stuff. I
- 39:15Speaker 7: always listened to the director, and so Robert was very
- 39:18Speaker 7: specific about really sort of over the top with Meg
- 39:22Speaker 7: and really mean and really loud, and and so I
- 39:25Speaker 7: just you know, he would let me do that. I
- 39:28Speaker 7: would do that, and then he'd kind of say, you know, okay,
- 39:30Speaker 7: do what you want now. And if I didn't quite
- 39:33Speaker 7: hit what he wanted, then he'd say, no, give me
- 39:34Speaker 7: a little more, give me a little more.
- 39:37Speaker 4: You know. What's a good point as well.
- 39:39Speaker 8: I just thought of it because when we're going through
- 39:40Speaker 8: the casting process, you know, and I think that was
- 39:44Speaker 8: probably the key why we got to have free reign
- 39:48Speaker 8: on set, because when we went through the casting front.
- 39:50Speaker 4: He did give you a lot of He did give
- 39:53Speaker 4: you a lot of notes.
- 39:55Speaker 8: Oh what the you know, in motivation behind your character
- 39:58Speaker 8: was in the certain So I think he already got
- 40:01Speaker 8: what he wanted to see before he cast us. Absolutely agree,
- 40:05Speaker 8: and then by the time we showed up on Seid,
- 40:06Speaker 8: he said, well, just do what you did.
- 40:08Speaker 4: Do what you did?
- 40:09Speaker 9: Yeah with a script.
- 40:10Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:12Speaker 5: And then obviously we know Sleepway Camp it has some
- 40:15Speaker 5: memorably grewsome kills. Like what was it like either seeing
- 40:18Speaker 5: those scenes being filmed or like taking place during them, Like,
- 40:23Speaker 5: what was the experience like for you guys?
- 40:26Speaker 9: Well, I was super It was grazy. I was super sick.
- 40:29Speaker 7: I had the flu at the time, and my mom
- 40:31Speaker 7: came up because they had like, I mean hours and
- 40:35Speaker 7: hours of makeup for my back and I was just
- 40:37Speaker 7: lying on a dirty mattress in the middle of the
- 40:39Speaker 7: night while they were doing it.
- 40:40Speaker 9: And I mean it was incredible, but uh, it was.
- 40:44Speaker 9: It took It took a lot of time.
- 40:46Speaker 4: It took a lot of time.
- 40:47Speaker 6: It's such a nasty kill, Like, yeah, so nasty, and
- 40:53Speaker 6: it keeps going and going like, yeah it act.
- 40:56Speaker 3: It was good. You did such a good job because
- 40:58Speaker 3: you had to.
- 40:59Speaker 7: He was yelling at he was yelling out as it
- 41:01Speaker 7: was going in, and you know, the water wasn't exactly warm.
- 41:04Speaker 7: You know, he's yelling out, the knife's going down. Now
- 41:07Speaker 7: turn your head to the left, turn your head to
- 41:08Speaker 7: the right.
- 41:08Speaker 9: It was very choreographed. So I just listened to what
- 41:10Speaker 9: the director told Robert told me, you know.
- 41:12Speaker 8: But it was great because if you think about it,
- 41:14Speaker 8: that could have just been an inn, could have just
- 41:17Speaker 8: been a couple.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Yeah, it stopped and then yeah, Super talked me through it. Yeah,
- 41:26Speaker 4: he talking super gruesome.
- 41:31Speaker 6: Judy's death scene is very expanded. Wow, like very expanded on.
- 41:37Speaker 8: So is it curling irons that's why or is it
- 41:43Speaker 8: one of those dice things that has.
- 41:45Speaker 3: The see that's also like.
- 41:49Speaker 4: The movie, I'm dying to read this thing.
- 41:52Speaker 3: You never saw you never even saw her. So she's alive.
- 41:56Speaker 3: So the mystery of she.
- 41:59Speaker 9: Made missed a few parts.
- 42:02Speaker 3: My theory still. Yeah, she's just on the that she
- 42:05Speaker 3: gets up. She's a superwoman.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Protection totally.
- 42:11Speaker 8: Don't put the don't they put them all in Arizona
- 42:17Speaker 8: like conspiracy theory.
- 42:18Speaker 4: There we go.
- 42:20Speaker 6: Well, I read when I read The Blue Heaven, when
- 42:24Speaker 6: I read the book and I went back and watched
- 42:25Speaker 6: the movie. Suddenly the the really nasty sound design of
- 42:30Speaker 6: like burning hair that through the mix of the movie
- 42:35Speaker 6: started making like I was like, oh, this is so
- 42:38Speaker 6: much worse that that's really.
- 42:41Speaker 4: The hand look.
- 42:45Speaker 6: Shadows are still the most I think the coolest visual
- 42:51Speaker 6: Pine film. Like I think of, well, I think of
- 42:54Speaker 6: Judy's death. Well, let's say Judy's attack scene, let's say
- 42:59Speaker 6: thank you, And then I think about, like, you know,
- 43:02Speaker 6: Raiders are the Lost ar Steven Spoorburg's use of shadow. Yeah,
- 43:05Speaker 6: you know, Dracula, it's the coolest thing to do. It's
- 43:08Speaker 6: the simplest. It's like what shine of light and in
- 43:12Speaker 6: the front of the light.
- 43:13Speaker 4: Yeah, but it's super effective.
- 43:15Speaker 8: Like I mean, that was the thing that I took away,
- 43:18Speaker 8: you know, years later, just the value of good practical effects, right, yeah,
- 43:24Speaker 8: I mean amazing when you see the stuff like tubes
- 43:28Speaker 8: on the on the burnt face, and it was spectacular.
- 43:32Speaker 8: The doubling of Johnny's head with the snake and Larisa's
- 43:38Speaker 8: b head, which Robert tried to get me the he
- 43:41Speaker 8: wanted to save money. He wanted me to double for
- 43:44Speaker 8: Laris da Ron for that scene. I was like, you're
- 43:46Speaker 8: out of your mind. I think he was gonna give
- 43:48Speaker 8: me like fifty bucks O dollars. He's like, these people
- 43:52Speaker 8: are professional. The bees don't sting. I'm like, cover my
- 43:56Speaker 8: head in bees for fifty bucks.
- 43:59Speaker 6: I'm good.
- 44:01Speaker 4: I would have done it.
- 44:03Speaker 6: Mel's death scene is still I think, as far as
- 44:06Speaker 6: an effect goes, the most impressive, because when when I
- 44:10Speaker 6: read Jeff Hay's book, which very comprehensively and in depth
- 44:14Speaker 6: explains the contraption they used to get the arrow the
- 44:18Speaker 6: illusion that the arrow goes through his throat, I still
- 44:20Speaker 6: don't understand how it worked. And when it happens in
- 44:24Speaker 6: one shot in the movie, it's incredible. And it's still
- 44:28Speaker 6: kind of like I feel like I ruined movies for
- 44:30Speaker 6: myself by learning too much about them. So then when
- 44:33Speaker 6: I watch them again, I'm like, I saw the rabbit
- 44:36Speaker 6: in the hat. I can't behind the rabbit in the hat.
- 44:39Speaker 6: With Mel's death, that's great.
- 44:41Speaker 8: That's great sound design too, write if you think about it,
- 44:45Speaker 8: I mean you mentioned something.
- 44:46Speaker 4: Great, Chris, because when you when you look at the art.
- 44:48Speaker 8: Of filmmaking right and you look at sound design, and
- 44:51Speaker 8: you look at the use of shadows and lighting, like
- 44:55Speaker 8: on the world war Z. I thought were spectacular in
- 44:58Speaker 8: that regard because a lot of of the a lot
- 45:01Speaker 8: of the scares came out of these sounds of the
- 45:04Speaker 8: zombies and then quick flashes and you never really see them.
- 45:07Speaker 8: But it was so effective with the shadow use the
- 45:10Speaker 8: shadows and sound design, and that's I think they did
- 45:13Speaker 8: a really Robert did a really good job with that
- 45:15Speaker 8: on the film.
- 45:16Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 45:16Speaker 8: I think that was the impact of the I mean sorry,
- 45:21Speaker 8: the impact of the of the arrow as well with
- 45:24Speaker 8: the sound design that made it. You know, you're listening more.
- 45:27Speaker 8: You're probably listening more than you're watching at that right.
- 45:30Speaker 6: Yeah. And it's also I think, honestly my favorite part
- 45:34Speaker 6: of sleep Boy Camp is and I'm still trying to
- 45:36Speaker 6: find it to this day, Aretie's big ass pot.
- 45:41Speaker 3: Yeah. We have some people who are such dedicated cosplayers
- 45:45Speaker 3: and will come in just you know, totally desiree you know,
- 45:48Speaker 3: Aunt Martha. And I've had people say, but I couldn't
- 45:50Speaker 3: find the pot, you know, want find the pot.
- 45:54Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 45:54Speaker 3: I think they haven't made they did, they haven't made
- 45:58Speaker 3: they have that one made?
- 46:00Speaker 4: Yeah, he ate up.
- 46:02Speaker 8: We ate at the camp. I mean we literally ate
- 46:06Speaker 8: in the again. Yeah, all I remember.
- 46:10Speaker 4: Is those big fly things. Doesn't remember that because she
- 46:17Speaker 4: was eating at Bernadine Liberta.
- 46:27Speaker 5: Were So do you guys remember if there was like
- 46:30Speaker 5: any effects moments or like uh, practical effects scene that
- 46:35Speaker 5: didn't make the final cut or maybe played differently in
- 46:38Speaker 5: editing during filming.
- 46:40Speaker 3: Not for me, nothing that I know of. No.
- 46:44Speaker 8: I mean in the boats scene where Johnny I mean,
- 46:47Speaker 8: you know he really cut his hand doing the lake boats.
- 46:51Speaker 4: Yeah, he had cut. He had to go to the
- 46:52Speaker 4: hospital get stitches.
- 46:54Speaker 6: Oh wow, how do he cut it? It was just
- 46:56Speaker 6: on the on the on the canoe, on the canoe, Okay,
- 47:00Speaker 6: Oh so.
- 47:02Speaker 8: That was I mean that was They put a bandage
- 47:04Speaker 8: over and did make up to film it afterwards, which was, yeah,
- 47:09Speaker 8: kind of weird.
- 47:10Speaker 6: Yeah, we talked about on I can't remember if it
- 47:12Speaker 6: was another interview Steve or not, but we talked about
- 47:15Speaker 6: how it's funny about horror movies is we can watch people,
- 47:18Speaker 6: you know, get eviscerated and limbs cut off, right, and
- 47:22Speaker 6: it's like we're like, oh, how cool, and then somebody
- 47:24Speaker 6: gets like a little cut on their hands and we're like,
- 47:27Speaker 6: oh god.
- 47:29Speaker 3: That's funny.
- 47:31Speaker 4: I'm not a good horror person. I am.
- 47:33Speaker 8: I cannot. I am scared to death watching horror movies.
- 47:39Speaker 8: It's the worst thing.
- 47:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't.
- 47:43Speaker 8: Yeah, I remember like The Strangers, I was like, I
- 47:46Speaker 8: thought I was gonna die. I'm not good at it.
- 47:49Speaker 8: I'm the guy that's like this, I look away all
- 47:54Speaker 8: the time. I'm not I'm I'm horrible and I know
- 47:57Speaker 8: what's going on. I'm like, obviously, I know.
- 47:59Speaker 4: It's some move Yeah, but it's still which I guess
- 48:02Speaker 4: speaks to.
- 48:03Speaker 8: The you know the art, and you know, because it does,
- 48:07Speaker 8: it definitely works on me.
- 48:08Speaker 4: Man, I get shitless.
- 48:12Speaker 6: What Yeah, you can't, Catherine, for you? What's the movie
- 48:16Speaker 6: for you? What's like the one horror movie that just
- 48:19Speaker 6: gets you every single time? That is you're so scared
- 48:21Speaker 6: of them.
- 48:23Speaker 7: I can't remember the name, but it was probably something
- 48:26Speaker 7: in the late seventies that I was dragged to by
- 48:29Speaker 7: my brothers on the Upper West Side of New York.
- 48:32Speaker 9: I can't remember the name.
- 48:34Speaker 7: My friend we recently figured out which one it was
- 48:36Speaker 7: when I was describing it had dragons that came and.
- 48:39Speaker 9: Picked people up and rip them.
- 48:41Speaker 7: It was just it was horrible of these creatures. And
- 48:44Speaker 7: I remember leaving screaming and running from it. But but
- 48:47Speaker 7: anything with with I think the extracist really got me
- 48:51Speaker 7: that after that anything was supernatural stuff like that, I
- 48:54Speaker 7: don't mess with that, I don't want to mess with.
- 48:57Speaker 7: It makes me too nervous, And that that did it
- 48:59Speaker 7: for me. That movie be I can't even see a
- 49:01Speaker 7: poster of it.
- 49:02Speaker 9: He scares me.
- 49:04Speaker 4: American Werewolf, American Werewolf in London.
- 49:07Speaker 8: Yeah, like when they would close the medicine cabinet and
- 49:12Speaker 8: there he is with the fish.
- 49:14Speaker 7: But it's the supernatural stuff that scares me because you
- 49:17Speaker 7: don't know where it's going to come from and where
- 49:19Speaker 7: do you go.
- 49:19Speaker 9: You can't do anything about.
- 49:20Speaker 5: It, especially when you're home alone, like forget one of
- 49:23Speaker 5: those things like you walk out of the theater and
- 49:25Speaker 5: then it's maybe it doesn't bother you when you're watching
- 49:27Speaker 5: the movies so much. When you go home it's quiet,
- 49:30Speaker 5: you know, getting ready to settle in for the night.
- 49:33Speaker 5: That's when I don't know that type of stuff can
- 49:34Speaker 5: you know, kind of be a little jarring.
- 49:36Speaker 7: Yeah, And back back in the day, I mean, if
- 49:39Speaker 7: I wanted to see a movie, it was the one
- 49:41Speaker 7: my two brothers were going to.
- 49:42Speaker 9: Or my family.
- 49:43Speaker 7: You had to go, you know, and everybody got to choose,
- 49:45Speaker 7: so otherwise you didn't get to go.
- 49:46Speaker 9: So I went to a lot of things I didn't like.
- 49:50Speaker 4: What about you.
- 49:52Speaker 3: Me, I'm yet No, I didn't grow up watching her.
- 49:57Speaker 3: I remember, like, do you guys remember the Romper Room
- 50:00Speaker 3: When you were like little? I used to this little
- 50:02Speaker 3: music would freak me out. I'd like run up to
- 50:04Speaker 3: my bedroom told the music was done, and they come
- 50:07Speaker 3: down and watch. I've always been afraid. I was more
- 50:10Speaker 3: like a theater Broadway kid. I'm obsessed with Broadway and
- 50:13Speaker 3: I lived in New York. My mom would take me
- 50:15Speaker 3: to see everything. And it's more that you know, yeah
- 50:19Speaker 3: that direction, yeah, yeah, But I really appreciate horror, and
- 50:23Speaker 3: now that we you know, we were meeting so many people,
- 50:25Speaker 3: I so appreciate the makeup and stuff. I try to
- 50:28Speaker 3: watch them. I'm not like up at all, but so
- 50:31Speaker 3: many people are just so like you do both you
- 50:33Speaker 3: know these films inside and out, and I think that's
- 50:36Speaker 3: the love for it is like makes me so like
- 50:40Speaker 3: interested and intrigued, and so I actually I am very
- 50:43Speaker 3: intrigued by horror and wanting to catch up and wanting
- 50:46Speaker 3: to watch these things just because you know, and all
- 50:48Speaker 3: the also back to like you know, gender and all that,
- 50:52Speaker 3: like the things that weren't allowed with the Hayes Act earlier,
- 50:55Speaker 3: and the secrecy of things and how that progressed through
- 50:58Speaker 3: the years. And I find that fascinating. And there are
- 51:00Speaker 3: things that I don't get that somebody who is you know,
- 51:04Speaker 3: in the queer community would get. And so for me,
- 51:06Speaker 3: I'm very into I'm just trying to understand, like things
- 51:09Speaker 3: would just go past me and I would know, oh
- 51:11Speaker 3: that's a queer film. I no idea, you know. So
- 51:13Speaker 3: I find that fascinating that I find fascinating also about
- 51:16Speaker 3: the Harrm Moony, the horror, the horror people intertwined with
- 51:20Speaker 3: the drag community, intertwined with the queer community. It's just
- 51:23Speaker 3: I love that. So for me finding it now, I'm
- 51:26Speaker 3: not too late in it because I just find that
- 51:28Speaker 3: all so interesting.
- 51:30Speaker 5: You know, christ and I were talking about this Nightmare
- 51:33Speaker 5: and elm Street too, Freddy's Revenge. I mean, that's that's
- 51:36Speaker 5: another great example of you know, kind of there's that
- 51:39Speaker 5: subtext that's there. I mean, but for either of us
- 51:42Speaker 5: it's like growing up, it's like, you know, you kind
- 51:45Speaker 5: of take it at face value, like, hey, this is
- 51:46Speaker 5: just a slasher or like some sleepway camp. Here you
- 51:49Speaker 5: are all these years later, and it's like you can
- 51:51Speaker 5: reassess it, and it's like there's some really really impactful
- 51:54Speaker 5: messages that they have about like you know, gender identity,
- 51:57Speaker 5: you know, like.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Right like Chucky Glenn. Which is so interesting also because
- 52:01Speaker 3: you know, you get people in the theater and they're
- 52:04Speaker 3: thinking they're going to go see some fun scare thing,
- 52:06Speaker 3: and then there's just you know, these little messages that
- 52:08Speaker 3: go by of acceptance or you know, you see it
- 52:10Speaker 3: enough and it just becomes part of your acceptance.
- 52:14Speaker 4: You know.
- 52:14Speaker 3: That's so it is so interesting what you can put
- 52:16Speaker 3: in a horror movie and people don't you know, So yeah,
- 52:18Speaker 3: I totally the undertones, the under.
- 52:21Speaker 6: You know, horror is as ironic as it sounds to
- 52:24Speaker 6: people who aren't embedded in the genre. There's safety and
- 52:27Speaker 6: horror because for me, being a kid, I never felt
- 52:33Speaker 6: like in with any any group, any person, and I
- 52:37Speaker 6: found some weird connection with movies which has paved, you know,
- 52:42Speaker 6: the path to you know, this moment in every moment
- 52:45Speaker 6: that that Steve and I have been able to share
- 52:47Speaker 6: of it the last year with this genre, and it's
- 52:51Speaker 6: ironic because people give a side eye to horror, much
- 52:57Speaker 6: like they give a side eye to many things that
- 53:00Speaker 6: uh that are are going on today, you know. So
- 53:02Speaker 6: horror has always been a place where it's almost like
- 53:06Speaker 6: people on the outside can can feel inside, can feel
- 53:11Speaker 6: with other people, and we can relate to it. And
- 53:15Speaker 6: the fact that horror could tap into gender identities long
- 53:21Speaker 6: before a drama could or other more accepting genres of film,
- 53:26Speaker 6: I think is a statement to the genre as a whole.
- 53:30Speaker 6: But now I can't tell you how incredibly accepting this
- 53:35Speaker 6: community is to everybody.
- 53:40Speaker 5: Incredible.
- 53:41Speaker 8: We see it, Chris, we see the conventions because the
- 53:44Speaker 8: people are so different, right, the walks of life are
- 53:48Speaker 8: so different for all these people. You have artists and
- 53:51Speaker 8: as Catherine said before, you have doctors. You have people
- 53:54Speaker 8: from all walks of life, from all places in the
- 53:57Speaker 8: economic you know, stations. But the common thread is exactly
- 54:01Speaker 8: that in the horror community.
- 54:04Speaker 4: It's kindness, yeah, and acceptance.
- 54:08Speaker 8: They are the kindest, most accepting people that I have met.
- 54:13Speaker 4: Yeah, throughout my journey of life.
- 54:14Speaker 9: I mean, everybody, everybody belongs.
- 54:17Speaker 7: It's someplace everybody belongs, and you feel that, and I
- 54:20Speaker 7: feel that when I'm there and I want to be there.
- 54:21Speaker 3: Then, you know, I think people get themselves their makeup
- 54:26Speaker 3: and they go out and it's just brave. But it
- 54:28Speaker 3: shouldn't be brave, but they are. And it's just so
- 54:31Speaker 3: there's just there is such a comfort and I get that.
- 54:33Speaker 3: I've had people tell me, I'm sure you guys have too,
- 54:36Speaker 3: that they watched Sleepy Campus their comfort movie, which I
- 54:38Speaker 3: every week understood, but like, wow, that's such a compliment,
- 54:42Speaker 3: and it's just wow, you know, so it makes sense.
- 54:46Speaker 3: You're an outsider and you find this and you and
- 54:49Speaker 3: then you realize that there are other outsiders who feel
- 54:51Speaker 3: the same way and they love this and you build
- 54:53Speaker 3: a community and it's beautiful. I just love it. I'm
- 54:55Speaker 3: so happy to be part of like after all this
- 54:57Speaker 3: year to like years and years to just find this communit.
- 55:00Speaker 3: If I never work again, which I would love to,
- 55:02Speaker 3: but it's just so wonderful that we have this community
- 55:04Speaker 3: that I never would have thought. These people are just wonderful.
- 55:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree. I agree. That's the best part. You know,
- 55:11Speaker 4: That's the thing I take away from it all.
- 55:13Speaker 8: I mean, just a sense of gratitude for just you know,
- 55:16Speaker 8: I hate using that word because I don't think I'm worthy.
- 55:18Speaker 8: You know what I mean, they are, and you know,
- 55:21Speaker 8: some of the other guys obviously FORELSSA. But you know,
- 55:23Speaker 8: I hate using the word fans, but when I see
- 55:26Speaker 8: the fans of the film, I'm just soul filled with gratitude.
- 55:29Speaker 8: I'm like, oh my god, you're such nice people and
- 55:33Speaker 8: you like us and like this movie after all these
- 55:36Speaker 8: years and you and it's generational people pass it on.
- 55:40Speaker 4: It's like a little seeing.
- 55:42Speaker 8: Grandma's with their kids and their kids kids, and I'm like,
- 55:47Speaker 8: are you kidding me?
- 55:48Speaker 4: This is like so cool, you know.
- 55:51Speaker 3: You know, Kathy and I were in the bathroom cat
- 55:53Speaker 3: remember this. We were in the bathroom in Florida and
- 55:56Speaker 3: this girl girl turned around like we just happened to
- 55:59Speaker 3: be there, and man did she freak out. And we
- 56:01Speaker 3: were so like honored, and she was so freaked out
- 56:05Speaker 3: that we were just dading going to bathroom because we
- 56:07Speaker 3: go to bathroom, and we were like, okay, let's take
- 56:10Speaker 3: a selfie, and she was like she was she was shaking,
- 56:13Speaker 3: she was shaking and cry and she just didn't believe it.
- 56:16Speaker 3: And we were like, over honest, beautiful. We were so
- 56:22Speaker 3: like we remember it clearly because we were just so honored.
- 56:24Speaker 3: It was just such an honor to like have that.
- 56:26Speaker 4: We have the best fans. I'll say it, we have.
- 56:30Speaker 8: I'll put our fans up against any other absolute and
- 56:34Speaker 8: we have the most dedicated, sweetest, just kindest, I mean,
- 56:40Speaker 8: just funny.
- 56:41Speaker 3: Which is we said yes to you guys because we
- 56:44Speaker 3: know your fans and we know your fans will be
- 56:47Speaker 3: listening to this, which and so we're you know, lucky
- 56:50Speaker 3: that it's you know, yeah.
- 56:52Speaker 6: Yeah, well it was. I know, we were talking. I
- 56:54Speaker 6: was talking to we have a group chat with a
- 56:56Speaker 6: bunch of other of our friends on Instagram, and a
- 56:59Speaker 6: little early I was like I was telling them, like
- 57:02Speaker 6: how anxious. I was like, oh, I'm getting ready for
- 57:04Speaker 6: a podcast episode. I was like, we're interviewing. I was like,
- 57:07Speaker 6: we're interviewing a bunch of the cast of Sleepwoy Camp
- 57:09Speaker 6: And everyone was like, what what do you do? What
- 57:12Speaker 6: do you And it's it's kind of like you kind
- 57:15Speaker 6: of like that girl seeing you guys in the bathroom
- 57:17Speaker 6: and freaking out. For us, For us going to conventions,
- 57:22Speaker 6: there's always a little bit of nerve when we do
- 57:24Speaker 6: meet somebody because we hope that they are the people
- 57:27Speaker 6: we think they're going to be and for me, Like
- 57:31Speaker 6: when I went to a couple of Monster Manias ago
- 57:33Speaker 6: I love. Reanimator is one of my favorite movies of
- 57:36Speaker 6: all time, and I was kind of perusing the autograph
- 57:40Speaker 6: area and I went up to Jeffrey Combe's table and
- 57:44Speaker 6: he was next to Barbara Crampton, and I went up
- 57:47Speaker 6: to the table. I realized it was cash only. I
- 57:49Speaker 6: had used all my cash. I wasn't gonna spend, you know,
- 57:51Speaker 6: seven dollars on an ATM fee. So me and my
- 57:55Speaker 6: friends just started talking. Next thing I know, I turn
- 57:57Speaker 6: around and both of them are standing next to us,
- 58:00Speaker 6: and we're just talking like there was no no transaction
- 58:05Speaker 6: there was. We're just hanging out talking. And then people
- 58:07Speaker 6: kind of started getting their table and they're like, all right,
- 58:09Speaker 6: nice to meet you guys, and walked away, and I
- 58:10Speaker 6: was like, what the hell? Just like yeah, and we
- 58:15Speaker 6: make it.
- 58:16Speaker 8: We make it a point in every one of our
- 58:18Speaker 8: Q and as we give away so much swag.
- 58:21Speaker 3: Not we give away so much slag.
- 58:28Speaker 4: We love we love it.
- 58:30Speaker 3: We don't love you give it away. You're the jener
- 58:33Speaker 3: you are.
- 58:36Speaker 4: They deserve it. They come up with great questions.
- 58:39Speaker 8: We're so excited and that room is always full and
- 58:43Speaker 8: it's such a good time that you just want to
- 58:45Speaker 8: I don't know, it's nice get back.
- 58:48Speaker 4: It's nice to give back.
- 58:50Speaker 6: Man. We need to host. We need to get all
- 58:52Speaker 6: of you guys to monster Mania and then maybe we
- 58:54Speaker 6: can host.
- 58:56Speaker 4: Let's do it, do it.
- 58:57Speaker 9: We're ready.
- 58:57Speaker 4: I haven't been to. We have to vote. Yeah, man,
- 59:04Speaker 4: we have to meet in person after this.
- 59:06Speaker 6: Yeah. So one of my goals is now that we're
- 59:10Speaker 6: doing the interviews more often, I actually want to start
- 59:12Speaker 6: printing the posters that we get made for the thumbnails,
- 59:16Speaker 6: and I want to start tracking kind of who's coming
- 59:19Speaker 6: local so I can actually go and meet in person
- 59:21Speaker 6: and get them on.
- 59:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 59:24Speaker 6: It's funny because we had Lauren Marie Taylor on from
- 59:28Speaker 6: Friday thirteenth part too.
- 59:29Speaker 9: Lauren's great, I love Oh my god.
- 59:32Speaker 6: She was incredible and she was gonna be she was
- 59:34Speaker 6: going to be local. Uh And I told her. I
- 59:36Speaker 6: was like, oh, I might be able to make it
- 59:38Speaker 6: up there, and she's like, oh my god. She's like,
- 59:39Speaker 6: come up, bring whatever you got, let's hang out, let's talk.
- 59:42Speaker 6: And I'm I'm thinking of myself. I'm like, what's happening here?
- 59:46Speaker 9: She's so sweet.
- 59:47Speaker 7: We went to Germany together and I had never met her,
- 59:50Speaker 7: and and I guess she and I were the only
- 59:52Speaker 7: ones who slept the whole way on the plane, so
- 59:54Speaker 7: everybody crashed when they got there and it was daytime
- 59:57Speaker 7: and we were like, We're in the lobby and I'm like, Hi,
- 59:58Speaker 7: I'm Catherine.
- 59:59Speaker 9: She goes, Hi, I'm Laura. I was like, should we
- 1:00:00Speaker 9: go side seeing? Shoot, yeah, let's go.
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: We spent the whole day together, had the best time.
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: I just love her.
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: Yeah, she has such infectious energy.
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that.
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: The episode with her, she was like, hey, I got
- 1:00:15Speaker 6: a good you know, forty five minutes we were like awesome.
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: And right from the get go, it felt so comfortable
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: because she was just so it was almost like she
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: was happier to be talking to us than we were
- 1:00:25Speaker 6: talking back. It was great. Yeah, it was incredible.
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: What are you doing?
- 1:00:34Speaker 9: I'm just me six weeks ago.
- 1:00:36Speaker 7: So I get an uncomfortable position, I just gotta stretch.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: You're still you're still feeling that?
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: Well, not really, but a little bit. When I sit
- 1:00:45Speaker 7: for too long, I just feel like I got to
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: change positions, you know.
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: Oh god, well, listen, I wanted to ask are there
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: were there any scenes when you guys were filming that
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: were difficult to shoot, whether it was like emotionally, physically,
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: or maybe just because of the can at the time
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: you guys were filming.
- 1:01:03Speaker 7: I mean, for me, it was having to throw Felissa
- 1:01:05Speaker 7: in the lake and I had to pick her up
- 1:01:07Speaker 7: and she was like though she was so tiny, But
- 1:01:10Speaker 7: that was difficult because I was so scared she was
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: going to hit her head on the dock. So all
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: I cared about was like, and she had a struggle,
- 1:01:17Speaker 7: was just throwing her far and she would.
- 1:01:18Speaker 9: Hit her head. I was just terrified she get hurt.
- 1:01:21Speaker 9: So that was hard.
- 1:01:22Speaker 6: Was it hard to be mean to her?
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: Like?
- 1:01:24Speaker 6: Was it hard to change?
- 1:01:26Speaker 9: She was just a little thirteen year old girl.
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: It was hard, those little doe eyes that.
- 1:01:31Speaker 9: Yeah, but she was such a pro and I think
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: it was she Yes, she was great. I was like,
- 1:01:37Speaker 9: I'm really gonna yell at you.
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: She goes yep to it.
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: You know, she was incredible for one second. It was
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: yeah for me. The slap scene was fine for me,
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: but Susie the actress didn't want to slap me, and
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: Robert kept saying slapp her, just slapper and I kept saying,
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: just slap me, just slap me, and she finally it
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: was so hard for her to do that, and because
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: she was so sweet. I think her name was Susie,
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: but in the character's name was Susie too, and she
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: foind last me. And so we only really did it
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: like that scene once because she didn't want to slap me,
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: and then she didn't want to slap me again. But
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: so that was the And I know it was quiet
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: on the set because Robert was like, I know this
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: is you know, we're going to keep it, you know,
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: and it's late. I feel like it was not at nighttime.
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: So but yeah, that's my memory of that of that scene.
- 1:02:18Speaker 8: I think the fight scene was because the way I mean,
- 1:02:22Speaker 8: Robert had all the extras, the local extra like the
- 1:02:25Speaker 8: farm boys from up there in the fight scene, and
- 1:02:28Speaker 8: he basically told them like like it hit them, hit us.
- 1:02:34Speaker 8: So we were in there, We're in there like mixing
- 1:02:37Speaker 8: it up, and it was like a rugby strum.
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: They were like punching like the back of the head.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, that was pretty. It was like a
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: real that was like actually like a real fight.
- 1:02:47Speaker 6: The fight scene's crazy because all of a sudden, it
- 1:02:50Speaker 6: goes from two people to like seven, all of a sudden,
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: the guys just get piled on.
- 1:02:55Speaker 8: Yeah, and I mean and they were like wailing away,
- 1:02:57Speaker 8: and I was like, what the you know?
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: And Roberts like digging it. Of course, you know, he's
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: like you he was.
- 1:03:06Speaker 8: He was like, just you guys make it look real
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: about And I'm like, aren't you supposed to somehow choreograph this.
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: Like somehow.
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: Intimacy whatever?
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: Yeah, you're not supposed to hit people.
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: Well, it's going to ask what was it like working
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: with Robert, Like did he communicate the vision that he
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: had for the tone or like the pacing of the film.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: He wasn't much older, so it was kind of he
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: was very comfortable, very very right away at the audition.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: I remember when I left the audition, I went downstairs.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: We were n y U and I didn't know Missy
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: was there and that was his fiance and I didn't know.
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: She goes, how did you do? I said, I think
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: I did great. He's so easy to work with. Those
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: are my line and so I mean, he just by
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: the way, he's just somebody that was just like I
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: knew him already. So for me, I found it very easy.
- 1:03:58Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, I agreed.
- 1:03:59Speaker 8: I think for me it's odd, Yeah, because it's you know,
- 1:04:02Speaker 8: I got along with him in the got along with
- 1:04:04Speaker 8: him in the casting, and talked about lacrosse.
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: I was playing lacrosse at the time.
- 1:04:10Speaker 8: And then I mean, how fast forward this many years
- 1:04:13Speaker 8: and and you know, kind of a little a little
- 1:04:16Speaker 8: bit love hate relationship at times, but we're like really
- 1:04:19Speaker 8: like brothers, you know, at the end of at the
- 1:04:22Speaker 8: end of the day, we always see eye to eye,
- 1:04:24Speaker 8: and we talk a lot and and yeah, and and
- 1:04:28Speaker 8: and we're obviously close friends. So it's it's kind of cool.
- 1:04:31Speaker 8: And he was like that, he was like that when
- 1:04:32Speaker 8: he was young. He's just an easy going.
- 1:04:35Speaker 9: Easy, very easy going.
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: I'm so happy for him that this this like magical
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: thing has happened so many years later and that he's
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: actually doing himself. I'm actually that is so cool. And
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: I'm sure I hope his daughters will think it's cool
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: and that he's cool.
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: And yeah, of course, how can you not, right, I mean,
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: you know, he.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: Was a lawyer, so you know that's dad, but this
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: is like, wow, this.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: Is this is super cool.
- 1:05:02Speaker 8: I'm in the end, you know, every always It sounds cliche,
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: you know, God puts you where you're supposed to be,
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: But I think that's what happened with this project. We
- 1:05:10Speaker 8: look at all the opportunities and you know, and and
- 1:05:13Speaker 8: never took any of them, you know, and and always
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: waited for something that just felt right. And uh, and
- 1:05:19Speaker 8: I'm happy that, you know, and hopefully I'm still alive.
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: But it comes out the heart of it.
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: You know, I'm excited for that. I'm excited for him.
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: I think it's I think it's.
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: Lovely, you know, I mean anything about anything. But I
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: was thinking, well, they should do it on a forty
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: fifth year. They should have it out by that, because
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: that's like that's going to be a big year.
- 1:05:41Speaker 8: But two years from now, and and I mean, it's
- 1:05:43Speaker 8: it's gonna obviously have a good slice of humor in it,
- 1:05:46Speaker 8: you know, which which is true, which is true to
- 1:05:49Speaker 8: the original, And you know it's gonna be it's it's
- 1:05:53Speaker 8: it's from what from what I know, it's gonna be
- 1:05:56Speaker 8: pretty cool.
- 1:05:58Speaker 6: That was the most exciting part. That was exciting part
- 1:06:00Speaker 6: of the announcement. I remember seeing the bloody disgusting headline
- 1:06:04Speaker 6: that Sleepway Camp remake us coming, but when I saw
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: that Robert was coming back, that was like the that's incredible.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: I was like, whoa, whoa, hold on. I remember reading
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: it again just making sure I didn't like confuse executive
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: producer with director or anything. I was double check yeah,
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: and he'll script yeah. Yeah, it's so cool man, We're
- 1:06:25Speaker 6: very that's pretty cool.
- 1:06:27Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: And it's clear the company doing it that, you know,
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: Johnny and Keenan they've been thinking about it for a
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: long time, which is I think very exciting because they're
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: just so excited about it. So I think, you know,
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: the energy is going to just be great.
- 1:06:40Speaker 8: I mean, I look at the collectibles. John sends me
- 1:06:43Speaker 8: pictures of the collectibles and stuff like that. He's like,
- 1:06:45Speaker 8: you know, I mean constantly reassuring me. Is like your
- 1:06:49Speaker 8: baby's in good hands, like I was.
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: They love it.
- 1:06:54Speaker 8: Those two guys love it as much as we do,
- 1:06:57Speaker 8: as much as Robert does.
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: That's pretty cool.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:00Speaker 6: Well it's it's cool now because uh, Fantastic Fests just
- 1:07:04Speaker 6: passed and neither of us were there. I've never been.
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: But uh, the the movie getting a ton of buzz
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: out of that is the remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night,
- 1:07:13Speaker 6: which is so great to hear because like Sleepaway Camp,
- 1:07:18Speaker 6: it's one of those movies that like deep cut eighties
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: horror fans know and love. And when you when you're
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: told there's a remake coming, you're there's always a little
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: bit of that, Uh Okay, you know, I hope this works.
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: You know, you want it to be great, but you
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: hope it comes out that way. And the first batch
- 1:07:36Speaker 6: of reviews are incredible, like people are loving it. They've
- 1:07:41Speaker 6: already kind of started putting some of the reactions from
- 1:07:44Speaker 6: the festival into the marketing, so they're starting to build
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: it up, and uh, it's it's it's it's so funny
- 1:07:52Speaker 6: to see remakes getting such great attention now because everyone's
- 1:07:57Speaker 6: looking back at older remakes that we thought we didn't
- 1:07:59Speaker 6: like it one point in time, and now we're kind
- 1:08:02Speaker 6: of retroactively like, oh wait, hold on, that was actually
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: really really good. We need to revisit this, like House
- 1:08:07Speaker 6: of Wax, Texas, Chainsaw Massacre. You know, we're looking in
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: TV shows.
- 1:08:12Speaker 9: Yeah, even TV shows we're all getting remade now. So yeah,
- 1:08:14Speaker 9: it's it's what seems to know what people want.
- 1:08:17Speaker 6: Yeah, people want it. And I also think though we
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: appreciate the I don't want to say, because Sun like
- 1:08:25Speaker 6: Deadly Night, from what I'm hearing, is kind of taking
- 1:08:28Speaker 6: things in a different direction, which I admire. I think
- 1:08:31Speaker 6: we want to just be back in these worlds. And
- 1:08:34Speaker 6: as long as you're as long as you're coming at
- 1:08:37Speaker 6: it from a place of love and a place where
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: you're keeping the fans in mind. We see, we we
- 1:08:43Speaker 6: can feel that right away. You don't. It doesn't need
- 1:08:45Speaker 6: to be the same story, it doesn't need to be
- 1:08:47Speaker 6: the same setting. We just need to feel that you
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: respect the people who love the movie, and you respect
- 1:08:53Speaker 6: the movie that came before it. Everything else will just
- 1:08:56Speaker 6: naturally work into place, I think.
- 1:08:58Speaker 8: And I mean, you know, and and obviously for this one,
- 1:09:01Speaker 8: how do you beat that ending?
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:09:04Speaker 6: You know?
- 1:09:04Speaker 8: So the curiosity factor is going to be pretty pretty high.
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: I think up to up to the release of this
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: you know, you.
- 1:09:12Speaker 6: Know, that's gonna be the that's the make or break moment,
- 1:09:16Speaker 6: right because everyone's gonna be everyone's gonna be twiddling their
- 1:09:19Speaker 6: thumbs until those final thirty seconds.
- 1:09:22Speaker 8: I think I think they'll be pleasantly, pleasantly surprised.
- 1:09:28Speaker 6: That makes me very happy to hear.
- 1:09:29Speaker 8: And you're gonna have You're gonna have a world, a
- 1:09:32Speaker 8: world of cameos in this thing, because you know, I mean,
- 1:09:36Speaker 8: you guys know everybody is a fan of this in
- 1:09:39Speaker 8: the industry, So it's you know that the people that
- 1:09:41Speaker 8: want to the people that want to show their face,
- 1:09:45Speaker 8: which is kind of cool with Keenan doing it because
- 1:09:47Speaker 8: Tina Fey obviously is one of the biggest fans, so
- 1:09:51Speaker 8: it's it's obviously connection there.
- 1:09:55Speaker 9: She wrote about it in her book. Yeah, Kevin Smith.
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: It's fascinating.
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: Who did you say, Kevin Smith? Eli, I mean, in
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: a world of other people. So it's pretty cool.
- 1:10:10Speaker 8: There's gonna be a lot of there's gonna be a
- 1:10:12Speaker 8: lot of oh my god, what's his name?
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: It escapes me now from.
- 1:10:18Speaker 8: What's the show with with Harrison Ford, Catherine's braid at
- 1:10:20Speaker 8: the stuff with the.
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: Shrinked, shrink Shrinking, Shrinking, Drinking. Who's the lead in Shrinking?
- 1:10:29Speaker 9: I know the guys, I see him, but I can't
- 1:10:30Speaker 9: picture his name.
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Jason Segel.
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: Jason.
- 1:10:37Speaker 8: Jason's one of the biggest fans. Because it was funny
- 1:10:39Speaker 8: when when we were gonna do it with Blumhouse, when
- 1:10:43Speaker 8: Jason made us an offer to do the film, he
- 1:10:46Speaker 8: had Charlie McDowell directing Wow, Yeah, which was which was crazy.
- 1:10:53Speaker 8: I saw the dad just at the last convention, so
- 1:10:55Speaker 8: I was gonna need myself and told him about it
- 1:10:58Speaker 8: and uh, and he had Kevin who wrote seven was
- 1:11:02Speaker 8: gonna was gonna write it and they they're obviously friends
- 1:11:05Speaker 8: with with Jason and they said, he watches it like religiously.
- 1:11:09Speaker 8: On the weekend, they get their their friends together and
- 1:11:13Speaker 8: they they get some weed and then they like.
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: Just watched this movie, you said, and roll on the floor.
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: He said, it's like they love it. They love it.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: You're gonna get a lot of you gotta get a.
- 1:11:26Speaker 8: Lot of Yeah, a lot of cool little appearances in there.
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: Yeah, So what is it like?
- 1:11:32Speaker 6: I know one question to hear all the time in
- 1:11:35Speaker 6: interviews is, you know the interview will always ask you know,
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: what's it like? Uh, you know, absorbing what the movie
- 1:11:42Speaker 6: has become and stuff, and people are always super appreciative.
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: But from your guys point of view, to see a
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: novelization of remake, your first hand experience at the conventions,
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: is there ever a moment where you're just sort of
- 1:11:57Speaker 6: by yourself and you just it all just sinks in
- 1:12:02Speaker 6: and you realize the impact that the story, your characters,
- 1:12:07Speaker 6: your performances have had, because I can't imagine what that
- 1:12:14Speaker 6: would feel like when I get a moment if I
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: was to get away from a crowd and just let
- 1:12:19Speaker 6: it all hit. I can't imagine what that feeling is.
- 1:12:22Speaker 7: Like. I think it hits when we're at conventions and
- 1:12:25Speaker 7: we're next to some maybe some you know, Kathleen Turner
- 1:12:29Speaker 7: or Richard Dreyfuss, and we're sitting there and we have
- 1:12:31Speaker 7: crowds as well, and I think that's when it hits me,
- 1:12:33Speaker 7: like Jesus, how did this happen? You know that that's more.
- 1:12:38Speaker 7: That's when I'm impacted the most.
- 1:12:43Speaker 8: Yeah, Or when we're doing the photos and all of
- 1:12:45Speaker 8: a sudden, like some big director or or or yes,
- 1:12:51Speaker 8: actor will come and be like can I grab.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: We took the Sam Raimi.
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: And I was like, yeah, me too.
- 1:12:59Speaker 8: I was like that's cool, you know, So that's pretty cool.
- 1:13:03Speaker 8: I think like every night after we get done with it,
- 1:13:06Speaker 8: it's like it's like a moment of reflection where you're like, well,
- 1:13:10Speaker 8: I can't believe this happening is pretty cool, you know,
- 1:13:12Speaker 8: And then you see those people because we.
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: Don't hide out in our rooms.
- 1:13:16Speaker 8: You know, we go and we go and hang out
- 1:13:19Speaker 8: and hang out with the friends that we've made along
- 1:13:22Speaker 8: the way and hang out with each other and go
- 1:13:24Speaker 8: to the eat and everything else. And then people are
- 1:13:26Speaker 8: all at the table when you're talking, it's like and
- 1:13:28Speaker 8: you're looking at that going, wow, what a cool second
- 1:13:31Speaker 8: family to have, you know, it makes it really makes
- 1:13:34Speaker 8: you appreciate life because you know, we're lifelong friends now
- 1:13:37Speaker 8: and it's pretty cool.
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: It is an interesting thing though, because I don't like,
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: I don't think it I ever realized, like my life
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: where I live, nobody knows that I've been in this movie.
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: And I think it's fascinating and just in terms of life,
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: like when I go to these places and like people
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: hold the door open for me and like are afraid
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: to meet me, and then I'm you know, in my
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: life and like Katy said, she walked her dog, her
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: daughter's dog all day, you know, like nobody is doing that.
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: And so I don't really feel like I've made an impact.
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: You know, I don't feel any different, but except I.
- 1:14:15Speaker 8: Can't recognize all the time that doesn't happen. It's so strange.
- 1:14:20Speaker 4: I feel like it can get it all every airport
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: of it.
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: I feel like it's more of a partnership.
- 1:14:27Speaker 8: Moment because I own I have my own traveling with
- 1:14:30Speaker 8: me doing my documentary.
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: Obviously for that, I.
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: Communicate something here. So I feel like I think it's
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: a very interesting thing because I feel like it makes
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: me know that everybody's that interesting, Like everybody has something
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: about them that I don't know about that makes them special.
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: So like you could just be walking down the street
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: and there's somebody who is in a movie and I
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: don't know it, but I should treat them special anyway,
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: because if they're at a convention, you know, I'm getting
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: to you know, get it. It just makes me more
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: humble because it makes me love people more because I
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: realize in my regular life people don't think I'm special, so.
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: They just.
- 1:15:07Speaker 8: Crazy.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: But I don't mean that, Like I do a lot
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: of break stuff. I'm a foster care advocate. I do
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: so much good work with that I love. I don't
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: mean that, but I mean, like, you know, I'm just
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: a normal regular everybody. You know, I do suicide prevention.
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: I do a lot of good things. I'm not putting
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: my stuff, I'm not asking for anything. I'm just saying
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: as a person, you know, like I'm not walking around
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: like so it makes me realize that everybody, everybody has
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: something that we don't know about that that's just fascinating.
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: And that's your beautiful outlook too, Karen. Do you feel
- 1:15:38Speaker 7: that way about people and you love people? Which is
- 1:15:40Speaker 7: which is that you always communicate that and that's why
- 1:15:42Speaker 7: people that were to spread and that's why people love
- 1:15:45Speaker 7: you so much and want to come see you and
- 1:15:46Speaker 7: meet you, you know, And it's.
- 1:15:50Speaker 9: Yeah, And I mean, I'm.
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: Living if there's six foot three and forty.
- 1:15:54Speaker 8: Pound guys, I love that.
- 1:16:00Speaker 9: Living in Hollywood. I mean, I'm I'm there with it
- 1:16:04Speaker 9: every day. I'm always you know.
- 1:16:05Speaker 7: My daughter's an actress and a writer as well and director,
- 1:16:07Speaker 7: so I'm meeting other hard director she's worked with that
- 1:16:10Speaker 7: go oh my god, we love so I do get
- 1:16:13Speaker 7: that and hear that, but it is.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: So much more.
- 1:16:16Speaker 9: When you're at a convention, it's just it's a it's
- 1:16:20Speaker 9: amped to NonStop.
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: So that's pretty cool.
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: Yeah, it's my daughter. My daughter produces podcast and it is.
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: It has come to a point where it's interesting where
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: she meets so many people who are like, oh my god,
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: really whereas like years ago, she would be like, not
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: even tell anybody, and it just comes out for that factor. Yeah,
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: it is fascinating in that sense.
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: My son, my.
- 1:16:41Speaker 8: Son lives in in in Connecticut, and he was at
- 1:16:43Speaker 8: some restaurant in New Haven and I don't know how
- 1:16:46Speaker 8: the subject even came up, but the restaurant owner also
- 1:16:50Speaker 8: does I guess, like a horror convention in Connecticut, a
- 1:16:53Speaker 8: big one, all right on yeah, and and and he
- 1:16:57Speaker 8: mentioned sleep Away cav you know, do you know this
- 1:16:59Speaker 8: little movie, Sleepy Camp.
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: And the guy was like Sleepy Camp, calmed him his
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: meal and everything else.
- 1:17:08Speaker 8: Now that never happens to me, but but he was.
- 1:17:11Speaker 8: My son was so excited to tell me the story.
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: I was like, that's great. Well, that's always nice when
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: you when you get props with your kids.
- 1:17:18Speaker 8: And that was my kids, Keenan Thompson, I mean, we
- 1:17:24Speaker 8: grew up on Yeah. And and for him to be
- 1:17:28Speaker 8: carrying this forward, I was like, I got a lot
- 1:17:30Speaker 8: of props on that.
- 1:17:35Speaker 6: Let your son know that. One of the hosts of
- 1:17:38Speaker 6: the Beyond the Blood podcast once did a New Haven
- 1:17:41Speaker 6: pizza tour, you know, living in New Jersey, and it
- 1:17:45Speaker 6: was some of the worst pizza I ever had in
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: my life.
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: You went to Worcester Street and it was the worst.
- 1:17:52Speaker 6: We went to I forget the three places. It was
- 1:17:54Speaker 6: three pizza places.
- 1:17:55Speaker 8: That yes as we went to Sally's Yeah, and Frank
- 1:18:03Speaker 8: Peppe's and Lucile's.
- 1:18:04Speaker 6: We went one other one. I tell you, look, I'm
- 1:18:07Speaker 6: not kidding at all. We left Connecticut, right we we
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: stop off in Elizabeth, New Jersey to this other pizza place.
- 1:18:14Speaker 6: It was like I was back at home. I was like,
- 1:18:16Speaker 6: oh my god, this is already back.
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: Oh my god. I hate to tell you. I you
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: know what this may piss you off.
- 1:18:23Speaker 8: You do not know pizza, my friend, I accept that
- 1:18:27Speaker 8: bos Street shout out to Frank Peppy's all my love.
- 1:18:33Speaker 8: Whenever you want white clam pizza, modern modern pizza, the pepper.
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: This is getting me hungry.
- 1:18:43Speaker 8: And my friend, my high school friend, Lorenzo Colenna has
- 1:18:50Speaker 8: has a place in West Haven in the Strip Mall
- 1:18:52Speaker 8: that is like a great Italian restaurant and he makes
- 1:18:56Speaker 8: some of the best pizza as well. I think during
- 1:18:57Speaker 8: high school he's working at this infamous West Haven pizza
- 1:19:01Speaker 8: joint called Zoo Parties, and he learned all his skills
- 1:19:05Speaker 8: an they were grant kid like I was from. I
- 1:19:06Speaker 8: was in Germany. He came from Italy. And this guy
- 1:19:09Speaker 8: makes like the best pizza. So if you're West Haven, Connecticut,
- 1:19:12Speaker 8: you gotta go to Lorenzo's place.
- 1:19:14Speaker 6: Well, I don't want to.
- 1:19:14Speaker 8: If that's not some of the best pizza you've had.
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: I might have been exactly. It was good. Okay, it
- 1:19:22Speaker 6: was like you know, we we and it was good.
- 1:19:25Speaker 6: But getting back to Jersey, it just it brought me
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: back to life.
- 1:19:29Speaker 4: You know, Ron Howard.
- 1:19:30Speaker 8: Ron Howard like goes to Connecticut just to eat that pizza.
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: By Michael Bolton. We have different pizza tastes, but he's
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: a he's a he's he's he's.
- 1:19:46Speaker 8: A Sally's fan, and I'm a I'm a Peppies fan.
- 1:19:49Speaker 8: But I mean, to this day, I mean, it's like
- 1:19:51Speaker 8: it's like religion for us. If you grew up in Connecticut,
- 1:19:55Speaker 8: Pizza Worcester Street Pizza is like is it?
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: Man?
- 1:19:58Speaker 6: My wife and I are heading to New York tomorrow
- 1:20:01Speaker 6: to go see John Carpenter in concert, and uh, we're
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: gonna we're gonna find some random pizza joint up there,
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: and that'll be that'll be my first time having New
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: York pizza.
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: So we'll see jose and John's right, one of the
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: hotspot is it? Is it Joe's and John's right?
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: I think it is.
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: I know my husband John's.
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: I think John's John Downtown in the village Downtown is
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: we're gonna.
- 1:20:24Speaker 6: Be We're gonna be.
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: Spot.
- 1:20:27Speaker 6: We're gonna be in mass It's called the Mass Smith,
- 1:20:31Speaker 6: New York. It's a venue called the Knockdown Center. I
- 1:20:34Speaker 6: think it's like right outside of Queens. Oh kind of,
- 1:20:38Speaker 6: that's kind of the area we'll be in. And I
- 1:20:39Speaker 6: was like, well, we have to. We're going early enough
- 1:20:42Speaker 6: that we can grab something to eat after we park.
- 1:20:44Speaker 6: So I was like, I guess we'll we'll try to
- 1:20:46Speaker 6: find some New York pizza and give it a go
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: while we're there.
- 1:20:49Speaker 8: The good thing about New York is, like, you know,
- 1:20:51Speaker 8: any restaurant that's open and like a borough like Queens
- 1:20:55Speaker 8: is usual.
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: Otherwise they don't survive.
- 1:21:00Speaker 8: New Yorkers are pretty They have to have a lot
- 1:21:01Speaker 8: of choices, so you gotta serve good Grubb or you're out.
- 1:21:06Speaker 6: That's what That's what I thought. That was. That was
- 1:21:07Speaker 6: the process going in.
- 1:21:09Speaker 8: But but again, none of it as good as Worcester
- 1:21:11Speaker 8: Street in New Haven, Connecticut.
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: We are sponsored by.
- 1:21:18Speaker 6: Pizza I love.
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: It Lorenzo's in westleyn Connecticut. I love great.
- 1:21:25Speaker 6: Pizza where I can make friends and great enemies at
- 1:21:28Speaker 6: the same time. You know what I mean. That's my favorite.
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: Oh man, I'm hungry for pizza. I swear. Might you
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: do that? Chris?
- 1:21:39Speaker 6: No problem. If you gotta go, you get You're good.
- 1:21:42Speaker 9: Okay, Thank you guys.
- 1:21:44Speaker 6: So much, Thank you so much for.
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: Are we done? Is this it? I guess I'm only
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: in the I'm in the ninth inning. Two outs.
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: I gotta go.
- 1:21:57Speaker 9: Yes, I'm sorry, I.
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: Have to go.
- 1:21:59Speaker 6: No, No, you.
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: Were the best m e g out. You're the very
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: best buy.
- 1:22:09Speaker 6: So I want I want to end. I don't know, Steve,
- 1:22:12Speaker 6: if you have a final question or anything in mind.
- 1:22:14Speaker 6: Is something that you specifically you want to close out on?
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the last thing that I really wanted
- 1:22:20Speaker 5: to touch on, Like, did you guys have a sense
- 1:22:22Speaker 5: that the ending would be become that infamous or did
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: the impact only hit you guys, like later on after
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: you you saw that it had this big cult following
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: as time went on.
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: No idea at all, and we didn't even know the
- 1:22:36Speaker 3: ending untill we knew it right at the premiere.
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: I remember at the premiere because I was like in
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: that theater and then the people were like and.
- 1:22:44Speaker 8: I was like, ohh Jackson, Yeah see that one coming,
- 1:22:50Speaker 8: even though I knew, you know, I knew obviously I
- 1:22:52Speaker 8: knew it was, but it just still was. So when
- 1:22:55Speaker 8: you see it on the big screen, you know, no
- 1:22:57Speaker 8: Penis Jokes going to be in this. I mean, it's
- 1:23:00Speaker 8: just it's different, you know.
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: I mean it's.
- 1:23:02Speaker 8: Different than being on set and knowing what it is
- 1:23:05Speaker 8: and then seeing it on the screen like that, and
- 1:23:07Speaker 8: that the way that music kind of came in and
- 1:23:10Speaker 8: then her unbelievable iconic facial expression, you know, and I
- 1:23:16Speaker 8: was like creepy, you know, I love that. At that
- 1:23:19Speaker 8: point I knew. I was like, people are going to
- 1:23:21Speaker 8: talk about this for for a minute.
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I had no.
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: Idea anyone was going to talk about it for even
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: a second.
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: Really, well, that ending, I knew. I'm like, I don't know,
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: that's something. I was like, that's something I haven't seen before.
- 1:23:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: Yeah, well no, we're very lucky. We're very lucky. We
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: would never have thought it would we'd be talking to
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: you today like you feel lucky to talk to us.
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: We feel lucky to talk to you because we thought,
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: you know, so thank you so much for feeling that
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: this is an important movie and that we're important guests.
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: It's really kind of you.
- 1:23:54Speaker 8: And Chris updated updates after you visit, you know, to
- 1:23:57Speaker 8: New York about the pizza situation.
- 1:23:59Speaker 4: Please, I will, I will I once again.
- 1:24:01Speaker 8: You're not that far away from Worcester Street, New Haven, Connecticut.
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: For Frank's pieces.
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: Listen, it's on. I put it on the list right
- 1:24:09Speaker 6: right after it's Actually I.
- 1:24:10Speaker 8: Think they have one in Stanford, right off the highway,
- 1:24:12Speaker 8: and I want to mention her which I not quite
- 1:24:15Speaker 8: as good, but but but close.
- 1:24:17Speaker 6: I just want to say, you know, I feel like
- 1:24:20Speaker 6: I've spent a lot of time in this episode kind
- 1:24:22Speaker 6: of telling you guys what what this movie's meant to us,
- 1:24:26Speaker 6: you know, in the fan base, and being able to
- 1:24:28Speaker 6: do this experience. So I can't say thank you enough.
- 1:24:30Speaker 6: But genuinely, this has been one of those experiences that
- 1:24:38Speaker 6: I still I still feel like, I like things haven't
- 1:24:43Speaker 6: really been real, just being able to have this conversation
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: with you guys, and I know the same is with
- 1:24:47Speaker 6: Steve and you know, I know, I just want you
- 1:24:50Speaker 6: guys to know how much not just us, but the
- 1:24:53Speaker 6: entire fan base that's behind us. Whether it's ten people
- 1:24:57Speaker 6: that listen to this episode or hopefully, you know, we
- 1:25:00Speaker 6: can break a couple of thousand and kind of set
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: a new record for the show. But every single person
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: who's going to come across this shares this feeling with us,
- 1:25:09Speaker 6: whether it's one person or a million.
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: It's super sweet.
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: It's unreal, So thank you guys so much. It's it's
- 1:25:17Speaker 6: really like uh an honor. And the only thing I
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: kind of want to leave you guys with is the
- 1:25:24Speaker 6: impact that you have on us as genre fans, and
- 1:25:27Speaker 6: you know, just making sure that we're expressing that love
- 1:25:30Speaker 6: at any chance that we can get, you know, especially
- 1:25:32Speaker 6: all the insight. And I wasn't expecting to like hear
- 1:25:36Speaker 6: some some buzz around the remake and be able to
- 1:25:39Speaker 6: talk about, you know, your guys experience on set. It's
- 1:25:42Speaker 6: it's it's unreal from you know, from me, So thank you.
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: Very sweet than thank you much.
- 1:25:48Speaker 8: And you know what, let's let's like three months from now,
- 1:25:51Speaker 8: I'll talk to Forlyssa. Let's let's let's do a recap
- 1:25:55Speaker 8: because we'll have more information about the obviously, about the
- 1:25:58Speaker 8: remake and everything else.
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: Make sure I'll make sure she joins. How is that?
- 1:26:02Speaker 6: Oh?
- 1:26:04Speaker 8: And in the meantime, if you see us at the convention,
- 1:26:07Speaker 8: I'm going to send you some coupons for twenty five
- 1:26:09Speaker 8: percent off merchandise.
- 1:26:10Speaker 6: Yeah, he got it.
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: I'm a giver and I'm joking. Stop by, We'll throw
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: stuff at you. Yeah, whatever you want, wherever you want,
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: You're gonna have you email.
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: After we hang up on this. You just email Tom
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: your addresses and you will get a gift. Because I'm
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: not kidding. He is the most generous, right, don't let
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: me tell you.
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: I don't know. Stop maybe he is.
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: Okay, we can't compliment each other enough, so it's not
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: gonna We're just on. But thank you, guys.
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: I miss you.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: I miss you so much.
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: I don't want to come.
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: I'm really glad that you're party, is it?
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: I want to come bowling? I want to come bowl.
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: Excuse me, excuse me, you're just so like a I
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: provacy dude. I I yes, I own a business, very
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: lovely business, and I'm very very blessed. It's a very
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: very nice business with people and it's a bowling alley
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: and make people happy, and it's I get decorate the
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: way I want, which I decorate for Halloween. I love
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: to decorate for Christmas. So yeah, so I am very
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: blessed to be able to give back that way, because
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: as we know, community is everything in a horror community,
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: bowling community, any place you can bring people together where
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: they're not talking about negative things and they're just having
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: fun is a wonderful place. So I am there.
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: You pizza there too.
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: You can have more than pizza in my bowling. Allan,
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: you actually have the very best chef. We actually have
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: a very very best chef.
- 1:27:40Speaker 6: So that is true cosmic.
- 1:27:43Speaker 8: How we didn't answer the question, is it I want
- 1:27:45Speaker 8: to come bowl or I want to come bowling? You
- 1:27:47Speaker 8: know what?
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: I think that's that could be decided by the person speaking.
- 1:27:52Speaker 8: Yeah, if that's you, not like it's not like, what's
- 1:27:55Speaker 8: that in the road ahead?
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not going to criticize you either way.
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: It's a thing. Sorry, you guys are too young for that.
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: It makes you happy, it makes you happy, all right.
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: I would be I would love to come bowl.

- 1:28:14Speaker 4: We got to get everybody together and do.
- 1:28:16Speaker 8: That absolutely, because who doesn't love who doesn't love bowling?
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: And you know what, the who doesn't love pizza?
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: Not to mention another podcast, but the Scaredy Cast podcast.
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: You know they're they're in, they're you know, not that
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: far from me, and I know they've wanted to come up,
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: so that would be so cool. They came up and
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: we're all there and it's beautiful where you are.
