- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Lucas: Luna, last episode we talked about how hot and humid it is. But what happens when the weather gets even crazier? Luna: Oh, you mean when the typhoon comes? That's such a big part of life here. Lucas: Exactly. So today we're going to learn a few phrases related to typhoons. Let's start with the most important word: 颱風. Luna: 颱風. That means 'typhoon'. Lucas: Right. 颱風. Say it after me: 颱風. Luna: 颱風. Lucas: Good. Now, another common word is 打風, which means 'typhoon weather' or 'it's typhoon season'. 打風. Luna: 打風. Lucas: Now, if a typhoon is approaching, you might hear people say: 颱風嚟啦. That means 'the typhoon is coming'. 嚟啦 means 'is coming'. Luna: 颱風嚟啦. Lucas: Perfect. Let's break it down: 颱風 is typhoon, 嚟 is come, 啦 is a particle. 颱風嚟啦. Luna: 颱風嚟啦. Lucas: Now, during a typhoon, you get heavy rain. 落大雨 means 'it's raining heavily'. 落 is fall, 大 is big, 雨 is rain. 落大雨. Luna: 落大雨. Lucas: And of course, strong wind. 好大風 means 'very windy'. We learned that before, but it's useful here. 好大風. Luna: 好大風. Lucas: So imagine: the typhoon is coming, it's raining heavily, and it's very windy. Let's put it all in a sentence: 颱風嚟啦,落大雨,好大風. Luna: 颱風嚟啦,落大雨,好大風. That's quite a mouthful, but I like it. Lucas: You'll get it with practice. Let's do each part again. 颱風. Luna: 颱風. Lucas: 打風. Luna: 打風. Lucas: 颱風嚟啦. Luna: 颱風嚟啦. Lucas: 落大雨. Luna: 落大雨. Lucas: 好大風. Luna: 好大風. Lucas: Excellent. Now, you know, if Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Cantonese, we want to keep it ad-free and accessible. Luna: Yeah, it's a small way to help keep the show going. I love that we can just focus on learning. Lucas: Absolutely. So back to our typhoon practice. Let's imagine you're looking out the window and you see dark clouds. You say: 颱風嚟啦. Luna: 颱風嚟啦. Lucas: Then it starts pouring: 落大雨. Luna: 落大雨. Lucas: And the wind picks up: 好大風. Luna: 好大風. Lucas: Now let's try a quick dialogue. I'll be the weather reporter, you be the listener. Reporter: 聽日打風. That means 'tomorrow there will be a typhoon'. Luna: 聽日打風. Got it. Lucas: Reporter: 颱風嚟啦,落大雨,好大風. Luna: Oh no. 颱風嚟啦,落大雨,好大風. Lucas: Good. Now you ask me: 出唔出街呀? That means 'are you going out?' but we haven't learned that. For now, just know you might ask: 你出唔出去? But let's keep it simple. Luna: Right. So I can say: 颱風嚟啦,唔出街. That means 'typhoon is coming, not going out'. Lucas: Exactly. You used 唔 to say 'not'. We've learned that. So: 颱風嚟啦,唔出街. Luna: 颱風嚟啦,唔出街. Lucas: Perfect. Let's review all five phrases one more time. First: 颱風. Luna: 颱風. Lucas: 打風. Luna: 打風. Lucas: 落大雨. Luna: 落大雨. Lucas: 好大風. Luna: 好大風. Lucas: 颱風嚟啦. Luna: 颱風嚟啦. Lucas: Great job today, Luna. Now listeners, practice these phrases so you're ready when the next typhoon comes. See you next time on Learn Cantonese with Fexingo! Luna: Bye bye!
