- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Our opportunities for the API entrepreneurs of file so far and building if you're local for firm or folks for partner with Zach Brock with what you're working with the focus for at the entrepreneur podcast of social.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: So, Zach, please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about yourself and your company and what primary products and services you offer the community.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Thank you for the opportunity to be on here with you today.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: My name, as I said, is uh Zach Brock.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I am the owner and founder of Secure Roofing, licensed general contractor in the state of North Carolina since 2017, and we have been serving Western North Carolina since that time.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Our primary focus is residential uh roofing.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Um we also do have a commercial division, which uh probably about 25 to 30 percent of our business falls into the commercial, with the rest of it being mostly residential from apartment homes, single-family homes, um, things of that nature.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Um, that's our primary focus is uh keeping Western North Carolina homeowners' uh assets protected and keeping them dry.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: So if you had to start your business from square one, what would you do differently?
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Um, wow, that's a uh that's a loaded question.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: One of the things I have learned um not to do is to is to look too far back in that.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: But um when I started this business, um didn't have lines of credit, didn't have a whole lot of financial backing, um, had a background in in construction and real estate development, and we started it with um a focus of just really providing the best service that there was out there.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: So in reality, there's not a whole lot of difference between my product that I'm putting on the roof, asphalt shingles, or any other roofers product, right?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Where there's three or four main shingle manufacturers here in the United States, all the roofers have access to that product.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: What differentiates a roofer is the quality of their service and the way that they respond to any warranty claims should those things coming up being uh should those things come up, um really having a local focus on your community.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Um that's kind of what the drive was as as we started this.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Um if I did anything differently, um it would probably be um I I would have I would have started our geographic footprint a little bit smaller than what we started with.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So we started off um essentially serving all of Western North Carolina, um, which we still do, but it was a lot initially early on, um, you know, taking jobs as far as the Tennessee border to east of Charlotte, and we also serve the upstate of of uh South Carolina, the Greenville Spartanburg area.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Um I probably would have tightened that geographic footprint a little bit, um, would have helped us with some some growing pains, um, but we were able to get there and efficiently serve that that entire market.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Okay, so so digging into that a little bit more, what what growing pains did you see?
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, obviously, probably, you know, you took on a little bit more business than you probably could handle, but anything more, anything in particular?
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Digging into that a little bit more?
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, digging into that, it's you know, like every business, it comes down to people and making sure you've got the right people.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: So I mean initially we probably made a couple of fast hires um looking to fill some shoes and and resumes look great on paper, and it wasn't necessarily the right fit for our culture.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Um, they were great people, good workers, um, but we've got a very, very specific uh forward-facing to the client uh structure with very strict um customer service expectations from all of our people.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Um and we've got a very specific process for um client onboarding um all the way through job completion.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Um and that reflects in, you know, if if you look us up online and you look, we've got you know well over 100 five-star reviews on this because of that process and the way that we um the way that we handle our clients and and really bring them into the fold and communicate with them.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: So I think um the geographic um envelope and then looking to hire some people in there that ultimately didn't fit our our profile um for what we wanted to be to our clients.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Um and I think I think that's something that every business goes through.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: So you know, what have your biggest learnings been as an owner since you started your business?
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Well, every day is a little bit of a learning experience, um, even after this many years in in business.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Um I I would say that um really keeping the it's it's easy for a business owner to detach himself, I think, from from certain aspects of the business because the business owner wants to focus on obviously growing the business and expansion and systems and processes and things of that nature.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Um one of the things that I still do um at least once a week is I will be out, uh even as the owner, I'll be out on a job site, I'll be meeting with the client, um, I'll be working with the crew.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Um, really just to keep that hands-on focus.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And and and it's for it's not just for the client, it's for the crew as well, seeing the business owner in that position.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, we're we're not we're not a huge company, um, but still taking those steps to be to be forward-facing to both our employees and the clients.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, okay.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: So, what are some common misconceptions about running a business, would you say that uh it's like winning the lottery and that you know business owners have it great and they don't do a whole lot of work and they make a whole lot of money.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Um, being a business owner um really is putting yourself last in the food chain and uh making sure that everyone else, um from your suppliers and your lines of credit to your employees and your staff, and everyone else is taking care of ahead of you.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Um and if you're a success a successful business owner, there's there's great upside for you and great potential in that.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: But it it comes with a tremendous amount of risk, comes with a tremendous amount of stress.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Um I'm 49 years old, I'm still be 49 this year, and I have been self-employed since I was 20 years old.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: So um wow.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: It's a uh it's it's not for the faint of heart, but um, if you're a uh serial entrepreneur um and you've got it in your blood, um you wouldn't do it any other way.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: So it sounds like you probably are a better entrepreneur than you are, like a you know, an actual employee, correct?
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Um I'm I'm a uh I'm a very, very hard worker.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: I probably wouldn't be the best employee if I'm going to put 110% of everything that I've got, which is the only way I know how to how to work.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Um, I want to do it for me.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Perfect, perfect.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: So how do you handle taking vacations running a business?
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Um actually um that comes down to the uh the quality of the staff that you've got.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: And we've got some fantastic uh project managers.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: I've got an amazing office manager uh and Amanda, who um really starts to run things seamlessly.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: And and what we do is in we because our our business is is weather dependent here, um we kind of slow down in the winter.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: So my wife and I and family will we'll typically try and structure our vacations more towards the winter side of things when things are going to be a little bit slower.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Kind of do it at a set time around the holidays.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Um and uh and and then I've got great staff that I can I can trust to pick up and uh handle anything that arises during that time.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Perfect, perfect, perfect.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: What have you attributed to your growth so far?
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Um well, I would say growth-wise, um the biggest part about it has become a reputation, um, which takes a while for a company to have them grow.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: You know, as as you're young in your first couple of years of establishing a business, you're building your reputation.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Um we're very proud of the reputation that we've got uh in the community.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Um, plus having been in our community in the construction industry for close to 20 years, um, we've got a lot of connections.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Um, a lot of people, you know, knew who we were in our other business, which was a uh a restoration business.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: So we again general contracting, but we we did flood, mold, fire, restoration, and have become very well known in the community.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: So it was a that part was a relatively easy transition for us because we had kind of built a name um on the construction side of things uh for our community uh in our community already.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Um other than that, it's it really it really comes down to communication for us.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Um I think that is most clients' biggest frustration is not necessarily the quality of the work that's done by a contractor.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: It really seems to be um a lack of quality communication and really keeping them in the roof.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: And that's one of the things that we've been over backwards to do.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: So we've got an onboarding process when someone comes to us for a roof.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: They've got a concierge who's dealing with them that you know, this is their go-to on everything that they've got that's gonna happen with their roof from the day that their shingles are gonna be delivered to when the dumpster's coming, to when the uh when the crew will be arriving to do it, how long to expect this to be.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Um, these are the days, please don't park here.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And really, really just um outlining the entire process to manage their expectations.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's one of the things we do really well.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I love that.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: If if I were to work with you guys, that would that would be something I'd love.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: It's it's I'd rather you over-communicate with me than undercommunicate with me.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Um, that's a huge thing for me.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: So, how do you balance your personal life with the demands of running a business?
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, do you shut everything off at a certain time of day, 5, 6 p.m., you're done, or how do you how do you balance that?
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Um, in the early years of doing business, I didn't ever shut it off.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Um, and that was a huge mistake.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Um our work is very important to us, but family life, um, it's why we work this hard.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: So there our clients will always have someone to reach in case of emergency.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: Those are always going to be a person, a live person holding the phone in case of emergency.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: But I'll personally probably stop somewhere between 5 and 6 p.m., depending upon you know what the my meeting schedule is at that point.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, that time forward belongs to um either, you know, taking an hour to go to the gym, staying healthy physically, um, playing basketball with my son, um, sitting on a porch with my wife, um, and and really just having some family time there and you know, wake up and do it all again.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Um, but if you don't take that time to recharge, um, you will burn out and you'll also you you lose some of the best moments in in life, and you know, no nobody's ever, you know, sat on their deathbed and said, Man, I work wish I would have worked a little bit more.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, you're right, you're right.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Um so you talked about a little bit about this earlier, but uh let's dig into this a little bit more.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: What what qualities do you look for in potential employees?
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Um first and foremost, absolute integrity.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Um people are human, people are gonna make mistakes.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: We don't expect people to be perfect.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Um we expect you to learn if you make a mistake, but we expect absolute integrity internally um in in dealing with with your coworkers, dealing with your company, and external, um, you know, being up front to a client of hey, you know, if there was a mistake that was made on a job, a mistake can be fixed, but it's get ahead of it.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Mrs.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Jones, hey, we didn't realize this.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Wrong shingle collar got ordered on this.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: We're gonna have to delay your job for two or three days.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: They're gonna come pick this up, they're gonna address it and deal with it.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Um, we don't tolerate finger pointing and blaming.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Um it's just not our culture.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: If there's an issue, we all you know jump together to to address it.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: And the reality is there's there's gonna be issues.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Not everything in in a in a business is always gonna smoke uh flow smoothly and easily.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: And if it did, everybody would do it.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Um so that that's that's that's that's one of the primary things that we look for in in an employee.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Second, you have to be able to communicate well with the client um and and and your fellow staff.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: So between integrity, communication, and customer service based, um, that's really what we're looking for.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: We're looking for people that want to have a long-term home.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Um, so you know, our our our senior uh senior manager um that we've got um has been working with me for over a decade now.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Um uh prior prior to uh Amanda coming on board with us, um, and it was only because of a uh family relocation that she had left.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Our office manager had been here for nine years.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: So we've got a lot of retention in um in our staff, and that's really because of the culture that we create.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Um everybody knows that everybody's got everybody's back.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: And so we're looking for people that are looking for a long, long-term home and also want to grow with the company.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: So there's there's financial incentives to stay and grow with the company and help build this.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: And we really um are about distributing um distributing what's on the table for the company to everybody who's helped build it.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: Nice, nice.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: It sounds like it's a good place to work.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: So digging into that a little bit more, you know, how do you go about fostering in a positive and productive work environment for everyone?
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Um, it's really about the onboarding and the culture and and and about what's expected.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: So I mean, like I said, we're we're a relatively small company, you know, we've got um not it not including our our subcontractor crews and the rest of it, but you know, we're we're we've got seven people that are on staff full-time.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: Um so we have to be very particular about who we put in these positions.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Um and also it's a very tight-knit group.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Um so you you've got to be able to really work well with and get along with with you know the rest of that group uh that is here.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: And most of the time we're able to figure that out in the hiring process, um, you know, through personality type testing and things like that.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: That's that's come a long way over the last 20 years.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Um so we're able to weed out a lot of that stuff before we get to a position um where someone's not working out, but occasionally that does happen.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Um and we'll uh we'll we'll act decisively if that's if that's the case.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Um we don't we don't allow something to fester in our midst um that is counterproductive to our culture.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Now we're going ahead in what's called the quick fire round.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: And how this works basically is I'm going to say one word.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: And I want you to basically tell me what that one word means to running your business.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: First word is education.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Education, massively important to us in our business.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: So we we're required by law to do a certain amount of community uh continuing education as general contractors.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: But what we do is probably about 10 times what's actually required.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Um, and we make that available to all of our staff members as well.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: So if staff members want to do something for personal development related to our field to better themselves, we've got an allowance per employee where they can spend that.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: And that can be going to a conference, it could cover their lodging, cover the cost of the conference.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Um, as long as it is something that is related to their position, doesn't necessarily have to be roofing.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: So this can be a management conference, this could be a customer service conference.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Um we we make that available to all of our employees, and it's massively important.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: If you stop educating yourself, you've lost your drive for your business, and you probably should be looking to exit.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Planning.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Planning.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Um planning is very important in any business.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Um we start planning in November for what we want to look at for the following year, where we want to be as far as growth, if there's products that we want to add, um, what we can do to make our customer service experience better.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Um so we really spend November, December, and then typically January, which are our slower portions um of the year just due to weather.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Um we planning planning for what we want our next year to look like.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: And then we also have a five-year plan of of what we want that to look like as well.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: So we tie in our one-year plans for 2026, and then also what is it, what does this look like in 2030?
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Next word is inspiration.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Inspiration.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Um you've got to be inspired by something.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Um and if you're not inspired by by by something in your job and what you do, you probably need to find a new field.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Um, because you're never truly gonna be successful without having something to inspire you.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: For me, my inspiration has always been my family.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Um, I've got four kids, um, an amazing wife, and that has always been my inspiration of you know, failure is not going to be an option.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: What are we gonna do to succeed here?
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: This this family is depending upon you.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: Um and then also the reputation that you're creating for your company.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: So you you know, my cup my company has become my fifth child.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Um, you care for it, you love it, you nurture it.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Um it's not just a way to make money, um, it's something of a legacy as well for for the time that you've spent here on this earth.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: And then the last word is commitment.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Um in business, if you are not committed to what you are doing, um that you're you're gonna fail right out of the gate.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Um, I have had so many experiences in my almost 30 years of self-employment, um where you would wake up and you didn't know what what the day was gonna bring, and you didn't know if next month, you know, you were gonna be a business.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: And uh there was a lot of shoestring moments in in in different businesses um over the years.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: And at any point there, if you're not committed to it, it's really easy to give up and say, I'm gonna go take a job and I'm gonna have the security of a paycheck.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Um die hard entrepreneurs are not gonna do that.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: And they're gonna stay committed to that.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: And um, like I said, this is self-employment is not for the faint of art.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, I appreciate that.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: You know, and and you can be uh, you know, you can say anything you want to hear really about it, but what words of advice would you like to offer to other business owners who are looking to grow their business?
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: Um are you talking in similar fields or just just business owners as a whole?
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, business owners as a whole.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Um I would I would say the advice is figure out where you want to grow.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: You can't be everything to everybody.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: And even if you end up being able to, you know, do massive expansions over the years, focusing on one area for growth, getting really good at that, completing that expansion, and then moving on to your next goal for your two, three, four, five year goals, um, my encouragement would be take it slow, focus on it, do it really well, and then look at your next level of expansion.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: If you try and expand on too many different fronts at one time, you're setting yourself up for failure.
- 19:55unknown: Okay.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: Any new products you would like to discuss?
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: We are actually really excited about a product that we brought on board um July of this last year.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: So we've been looking over the years at all the roofs and everything that we replace, and and roofs when they get between 10, 12, you know, uh up to 20 years old, depending upon the type of environmental exposure that they've had, they're really starting to show signs of of aging.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: But they're not always you don't they're not always in a position where they have to be replaced.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: And in July of this last year, we became the local vendor for uh Roofmax, which is a product of roof rejuvenation.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: You've probably seen some of the commercials on TV, on the ESPN, and some of your local WLOS things.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: What it actually does is if you've got an asphalt shingle roof that is aging and starting to show signs of aging, like granule loss, you're getting some streaking, getting some color loss, shingles are getting a little bit brittle.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: This actually restores the natural moisture content of the asphalt shingle through its proprietary product and adds five, 10, and sometimes even 15 years to the life of the roof.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: So a roof is one of your biggest expenditures as a homeowner.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: You know, uh and and we've watched the cost of roofing go up.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: We haven't raised our labor prices since 2021, but our roofs are 40% more expensive now than they were in 2011 just because of materials costs.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: And because this is, you know, asphalt roofing is a petroleum-based product, so we're very affected by by the cost of petroleum and oil and things of that um nature.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: But having a product where a client who either can't afford to do a replacement right now but could budget for it in five years and needs to make sure that this roof isn't going to be leaking for the next five years, they can they can come in and do this rejuvenation project process for an absolute fraction of the cost of a new roof.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Or if it's a landlord who's like, you know what, this is how I'm making my money, and I want to I want to extend the life of this roof as long as I possibly can before I have to go to replace this.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: It's really nice to be able to give people those options.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: And most roofers, when you come out, I won't say most, a lot of roofers, and a lot of what I see in this industry, when they come out, they don't really want to do a repair, they don't want to do something that's a rejuvenation, they want to come in and do their their full roof replacement, which is where they're where roofers make their money.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: And I believe me, I'm there's nothing gets me happier than replacing a full roof.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Love to do it.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: But having a product where we can actually be honest with the client and say, hey, this is where you're at right here.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: You're gonna need a replacement, but we might be able to buy you five years, ten years, fifteen years if you do this, that really builds a lot of trust with the client.
