Today we're going to talk about family — but not just mom and dad. Extended family. Luna: Oh, like grandparents, aunts, uncles? That's great. I've been wanting to talk about my family in Cantonese. Lucas: Exactly. Let's start with the grandparents. For paternal grandfather, we say 爺爺. Luna: 爺爺. Lucas: Good. And paternal grandmother is 嫲嫲. Luna: 嫲嫲. That's cute. Lucas: Now, for maternal side, it's different. Maternal grandfather is 公公, and maternal grandmother is 婆婆. Luna: Oh, so it depends on which side of the family? Lucas: Right. But today we'll focus on the paternal side. Let's practice a full sentence: 我爺爺同嫲嫲. That means 'my grandfather and grandmother'. Luna: So 我 is 'my', then 爺爺同嫲嫲. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's learn uncle and aunt. Your father's brother is 伯父, and his wife is 伯母. Your father's sister is 姑媽. Luna: That's a lot. So 伯父 is dad's brother, 伯母 is his wife, and 姑媽 is dad's sister. Lucas: You got it. And on your mother's side, your mother's brother is 舅父, and her sister is 阿姨. Luna: 舅父 and 阿姨. Those sound friendlier. Lucas: They are commonly used. Let's put them together. But 好好 means 'very good' as in kind. You could say 我舅父同阿姨好好人 — they are good people. Luna: 我舅父同阿姨好好人. That's a nice thing to say. Lucas: Let's practice a mini conversation. Imagine you're at a family gathering. Someone asks: 呢個係你邊個? — Who is this? Luna: Oh, I can point and say: 呢個係我嫲嫲. Lucas: Perfect. And if they ask about your uncle: 呢個係我舅父. Luna: 呢個係我舅父. Lucas: You're nailing it. Let's do one more: 呢個係我阿姨. Luna: 呢個係我阿姨. Lucas: Excellent. So today we learned 爺爺, 嫲嫲, 舅父, and 阿姨. Plus 爸爸 and 媽媽 from before. Luna: Right. And we can use them in sentences like 我爸爸同媽媽, 我爺爺同嫲嫲. Lucas: Exactly. Try saying that: 我爸爸同媽媽, 我爺爺同嫲嫲. Luna: 我爸爸同媽媽, 我爺爺同嫲嫲. Lucas: Beautiful. Keep practicing these with your own family.
