Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: New Zealand needs a grow spurt
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I have had it with people whinging about the state
- 0:03Speaker 1: of this country and people flying to Australia who then
- 0:05Speaker 1: refuse to stop and ask why we got here and
- 0:09Speaker 1: how we get out of it. Chucking up a post
- 0:11Speaker 1: on TikTok or waving a banner at a protest ain't
- 0:14Speaker 1: going to cut it. Productivity. That's how much we get
- 0:17Speaker 1: in for what we put out is crap. It's been
- 0:19Speaker 1: getting worse or flatlining for decades now. Australia's is better
- 0:23Speaker 1: over in Australia, wages of thirty percent higher. We're smaller.
- 0:26Speaker 1: We have to be smarter and that means doing what
- 0:29Speaker 1: the banner waivers of the world hate most. Getting roadblocks,
- 0:33Speaker 1: innovation killers, ie government out of the way. Doing business
- 0:37Speaker 1: needs to be as cheap and easy as possible. Education
- 0:41Speaker 1: needs to be world class and focused on the right stuff.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Let smart people be smart people and do what they
- 0:47Speaker 1: do best. Invent, optimize, invest, grow, thrive. We did this
- 0:52Speaker 1: post Muldoon with agriculture subsidies and deregulate. Does subsidies gone
- 0:56Speaker 1: and deregulation and now we're the most productive in the
- 0:59Speaker 1: world at it It's there are, of course, those who
- 1:02Speaker 1: reckon the solution to all of our problems is to
- 1:04Speaker 1: have a politician sign a piece of paper and artificially
- 1:07Speaker 1: increase the minimum wage. We'll write a blank check to teachers.
- 1:11Speaker 1: As academic results head south. The question for them is
- 1:15Speaker 1: who's going to pay for it? When our best and
- 1:18Speaker 1: brightest are leaving New Zealand and businesses are closing, who
- 1:22Speaker 1: can afford that? Show me a democracy that got rich
- 1:25Speaker 1: by increasing the size and influence of government, and I'll
- 1:29Speaker 1: give you a million bucks, and not one of those
- 1:31Speaker 1: Scandinavian ones which did it off the back of massive
- 1:33Speaker 1: mineral deposits which we're not allowed to touch. Remember, we've
- 1:37Speaker 1: fallen so far behind. We can't be managing a one
- 1:41Speaker 1: and a half or two percent GDP economy. This country
- 1:45Speaker 1: needs seven percent for at least three years. This country
- 1:50Speaker 1: needs a growth spurt. We've fallen too far behind. Please
- 1:54Speaker 1: don't be fooled by the false prophets waiving their banners
- 1:57Speaker 1: and posting their nonsense. They've got no idea what they're
- 2:00Speaker 1: talking about. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
