- 0:00Speaker 1: Smoke them if you got them, Vols fans, because you
- 0:02Speaker 1: earned that one. And by the way, you have no
- 0:04Speaker 1: shred of doubt, that was a straight up ass whooping.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I did not think in any way, shape, or form
- 0:10Speaker 1: Alabama would have lost in that fashion. You could have
- 0:12Speaker 1: told me that the Crimson Tide fell short. But if
- 0:14Speaker 1: you would have told me that they would have been outworked, outmuscled, outgained,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and outdefensively performed, I kind of would have chuckled. I
- 0:22Speaker 1: would have said, eh, you know what, probably Keelan Russell
- 0:24Speaker 1: throws a couple pick sixes and that's how the Vols
- 0:27Speaker 1: get away to win in Neyland Stadium. But as the
- 0:29Speaker 1: smoke continues to linger throughout the southern sky of Knoxville, Tennessee,
- 0:34Speaker 1: there is no shred of doubt about one thing. Jim
- 0:37Speaker 1: Knowles is the hire of the offseason, and Tennessee is
- 0:42Speaker 1: right back in the college football playoff race. Damn, what
- 0:45Speaker 1: an ass-whippin' of a performance. 26-10 final score as Rocky
- 0:49Speaker 1: Top rolls over Alabama. So let's break it all down.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Welcome on in to SEC Football Addiction. Cole Thompson here.

- 1:06Speaker 1: the channel right here and also over on College Football Addiction,
- 1:09Speaker 1: where me, TJ Pittenger, and Tom Hannafin go live twice
- 1:12Speaker 1: a week doing the show The Power 2. There is
- 1:15Speaker 1: no shred of doubt in my mind who was the
- 1:17Speaker 1: more physically imposing team, who was the more dominant team,
- 1:21Speaker 1: who had the better game plan, and Kalen DeBoer, for
- 1:24Speaker 1: all the good that he has done, has not been
- 1:27Speaker 1: able to solve what is Neyland Stadium. In fact, in
- 1:30Speaker 1: my opinion, the last couple times that we have seen
- 1:32Speaker 1: Alabama go to Rocky Top, it has been all Vols.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And honestly, we should have leaned a little bit more
- 1:38Speaker 1: into that. I get it. You had questions with George
- 1:41Speaker 1: McIntyre as the starting quarterback. We didn't even know if
- 1:43Speaker 1: he was going to be the starter in this game.
- 1:45Speaker 1: But take out the offense just for a minute. We'll
- 1:48Speaker 1: get to that. I promise we will. This is a
- 1:51Speaker 1: defensive performance that you hang your hat on if you're
- 1:55Speaker 1: Jim Knowles. And you look back, and it's December, and
- 1:59Speaker 1: we're talking about Tennessee being in the college football playoff.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It's because of the game he called today. I figured
- 2:05Speaker 1: that Tennessee's defense underneath Jim Knowles would eventually reach a
- 2:09Speaker 1: peak where it was one of the elite units in
- 2:12Speaker 1: the SEC. I figured that eventually it would be one
- 2:15Speaker 1: of the most dominating forces in the sport. But you
- 2:18Speaker 1: and I both heard throughout the entire offseason from everywhere,
- 2:22Speaker 1: Oklahoma State fans, Penn State fans, Ohio State fans, Jim
- 2:27Speaker 1: Knowles' defense is a little intricate. It takes a bit
- 2:29Speaker 1: of time to get acclimated to. Like, year one's about
- 2:32Speaker 1: establishing the foundation. Year two's where you really see the
- 2:35Speaker 1: nuts and bolts get down to the nitty-gritty of it all. Yeah,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I don't know what happened in the offseason. I don't
- 2:40Speaker 1: know if it's because of a new strength and conditioning coach.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I don't know if it's because of their ass into shape.
- 2:44Speaker 1: That defense is playing damn lights out every single week,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and it's a reason why you can believe in Tennessee
- 2:48Speaker 1: as a playoff team. It is. Alabama came into this
- 2:52Speaker 1: game as one of the most physically dominating teams on
- 2:54Speaker 1: the ground over the last several weeks. They came back
- 2:57Speaker 1: against Kentucky because of their ground game. They were able
- 3:00Speaker 1: to figure out a game plan against Florida State, largely
- 3:03Speaker 1: due to their ground game. They were able to run
- 3:04Speaker 1: rampant all over South Carolina, and they had their moments
- 3:07Speaker 1: in the George game last week. And this was a
- 3:10Speaker 1: straight-up performance where they said, Nope, take that away from you. Because, yeah,
- 3:14Speaker 1: you can tell me that 54 rushing yards is all
- 3:16Speaker 1: I have to say. Daniel Hill's longest run was for 17.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Keelan Russell's longest run was for 19. And that was
- 3:24Speaker 1: a touchdown. And that was all she wrote. They basically said,
- 3:27Speaker 1: we're going to blitz all night. We're going to go
- 3:30Speaker 1: ahead and shut your ass down. And we're going to
- 3:32Speaker 1: go ahead and send whatever we can to put a
- 3:34Speaker 1: young quarterback into rest inside of our environment. We locked
- 3:38Speaker 1: the door behind us. And by the way, you're not
- 3:40Speaker 1: getting out unless you want to leave in a body bag.
- 3:43Speaker 1: That was the type of performance that you saw from
- 3:45Speaker 1: Jim Knowles' defense, and they did that consistently. I mean,
- 3:47Speaker 1: it was from the jump with Jeremiah T. Lander, what
- 3:50Speaker 1: you got with DeJuan Lane, what you have with Kaden Lee,
- 3:53Speaker 1: Amari Campbell, TJ Metcalf, Ty Raymond, Arian Carter, Tyree Weathersby.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Have yourself a game to freaking remember. They did everything possible.
- 4:03Speaker 1: They said to Ryan Grubb, your offense is going to
- 4:06Speaker 1: look remedial compared to what we had. And it gave
- 4:10Speaker 1: opportunities for Tennessee to not put pressure on its young
- 4:14Speaker 1: quarterback to have to win the football game. And he
- 4:16Speaker 1: had some good throws tonight. George McIntyre really did make
- 4:19Speaker 1: some nice plays to Mikey Matthews, to TK Keys. He
- 4:21Speaker 1: certainly was able to get into a rapport starting in
- 4:23Speaker 1: the second half. But the thing that was about this
- 4:26Speaker 1: game is that you really could have just won with
- 4:29Speaker 1: field goals. If you were able to play and stop
- 4:31Speaker 1: Alabama and get the turnovers into short field position, which
- 4:34Speaker 1: you did early on, what you did later on in
- 4:36Speaker 1: the game, it allows you to be able to tell
- 4:39Speaker 1: your offense, just get into range for us to take three.
- 4:42Speaker 1: That's all we need. We win the turnover battle. We
- 4:46Speaker 1: capitalize on the turnover battle. There's an opportunity for us
- 4:49Speaker 1: to deliver. Alabama, a team that we have talked about
- 4:52Speaker 1: being a drastically improved offense with Keelan Russell, was 2
- 4:56Speaker 1: of 13 on third down. They had 12 total first downs.
- 5:00Speaker 1: They had 201 total yards of offense. And because of
- 5:04Speaker 1: the ravenous environment that I do not think enough people
- 5:07Speaker 1: are respecting still of Neyland Stadium, they had 10 penalties.
- 5:12Speaker 1: And that's a testament to what you have with a
- 5:15Speaker 1: ravenous fan base. and an elite defensive coordinator. He has
- 5:19Speaker 1: whipped them into shape where they are not having the
- 5:22Speaker 1: self-inflicted wounds, putting themselves in position where they're allowing far explosives.
- 5:27Speaker 1: They are a Hail Mary throw away. Literally a Hail
- 5:31Speaker 1: Mary throw away from being 7-0 and potentially a top
- 5:34Speaker 1: two team in the country right now. And it's largely
- 5:36Speaker 1: because of how well that that defense has played. Today alone,
- 5:40Speaker 1: with what they had defensively, 10 tackles for loss and
- 5:43Speaker 1: 5 sacks. They made Alabama look remedial. If you were
- 5:47Speaker 1: just to go ahead and say, take away the numbers
- 5:49Speaker 1: that are attached to a name, I would not be
- 5:52Speaker 1: able to tell which one was the number six team
- 5:54Speaker 1: in the country. And if I did, it would have
- 5:56Speaker 1: easily been Tennessee. Because they play like a team that
- 5:58Speaker 1: had its hair on fire with nothing to lose. Because
- 6:01Speaker 1: let's be real, not many people gave them a shot
- 6:03Speaker 1: in this game. Most people figure that Alabama, with how
- 6:06Speaker 1: bad the offense had been at times for Tennessee this year,
- 6:09Speaker 1: primarily with the quarterback position, they were going to find
- 6:12Speaker 1: a way to put themselves out of misery. They would
- 6:14Speaker 1: have walked on into Neyland. They would have lit up
- 6:15Speaker 1: the cigars by the middle of the third quarter and
- 6:17Speaker 1: things would have been a breeze. And that was far
- 6:19Speaker 1: from it. In fact, if you want to be completely real,
- 6:22Speaker 1: after you were able to get that critical fourth down
- 6:24Speaker 1: stop to begin the second half, at that moment, if
- 6:28Speaker 1: volunteer fans want to go ahead and light them up
- 6:31Speaker 1: in the middle of the third quarter, who am I
- 6:33Speaker 1: to judge? At that point, I kind of figured the
- 6:35Speaker 1: game was going to be out of reach.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Hey, guys, I'll get right back to the video, but

- 7:07Speaker 2: All of the conference football addictions, college football addiction, and
- 7:10Speaker 2: of course, the power too. All right, back to the clip.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Second big takeaway is that you may have the best
- 7:18Speaker 1: running back in the SEC of 2026. Now I know
- 7:21Speaker 1: that Ahmad Hardy exists and Kiwan Lacey still is doing
- 7:23Speaker 1: Kiwan Lacey things and Jaden Baugh had himself a nice
- 7:26Speaker 1: day down at DKR. But Deshaun Bishop right now is
- 7:29Speaker 1: the most consistent player at the position, and he is
- 7:32Speaker 1: absolutely dominated. And credit to Josh Heupel, credit to Tennessee's
- 7:36Speaker 1: OC for when they realized, let's not put more on
- 7:38Speaker 1: the plate of George McIntyre. He had an early interception
- 7:41Speaker 1: that led to a short field position, and ultimately Alabama
- 7:43Speaker 1: getting on the board. We're going to go trust our
- 7:46Speaker 1: lead back. And lo and behold, they did. Dude was rampant.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I mean, outside of the one blind side, if you
- 7:53Speaker 1: take away the blind side block that was made on
- 7:55Speaker 1: Mikey Matthews, Bray Hubbard, We're talking about nearly 200 rushing
- 7:58Speaker 1: yards against Alabama's defense. 200 rushing yards single-handedly against Alabama's defense.
- 8:03Speaker 1: He may have been into the end zone for a
- 8:05Speaker 1: third time today, for all we know. 32 carries, 159 yards,
- 8:09Speaker 1: two runs of over 15 yards downfield, five yards per play.
- 8:13Speaker 1: That's consistency. That's a dude who you said coached. put
- 8:17Speaker 1: it on my shoulders, let me be the reason why
- 8:20Speaker 1: we continuously can move the sticks. We can tie it
- 8:23Speaker 1: on Alabama. And I'll tell you what, the one drive
- 8:26Speaker 1: that you got to lean into if you are a
- 8:28Speaker 1: Tennessee fan and say, this is where I started to
- 8:30Speaker 1: believe college football playoff is on the horizon. Because by
- 8:34Speaker 1: the way, it is. You look at Tennessee's schedule and
- 8:36Speaker 1: we'll break that down in a moment. I can tell
- 8:38Speaker 1: you that it is nowhere near off the table, especially
- 8:41Speaker 1: with how we saw it tonight. But when you tell
- 8:44Speaker 1: me going into the fourth quarter, You have a drive
- 8:48Speaker 1: of 15 plays for 72 yards, 9 minutes and 32
- 8:53Speaker 1: seconds off the clock, and you're just able to trust
- 8:56Speaker 1: your running back, your bell-count bruiser, the guy that took
- 8:59Speaker 1: over games last season, with Joey Aguilar out there, and
- 9:03Speaker 1: a young quarterback that you didn't want to put the
- 9:04Speaker 1: ball in his hands and say single-handedly let us win
- 9:06Speaker 1: a football game, yeah, that's a moment that you can
- 9:09Speaker 1: start believing that this team is a little bit different. Now,
- 9:12Speaker 1: I don't know if you're going to need the pass
- 9:13Speaker 1: attack to be better if you want to win a
- 9:15Speaker 1: national title for the first time since 1998. But to
- 9:18Speaker 1: make a run toward the playoff, as long as George
- 9:21Speaker 1: McIntyre isn't throwing into double coverage three to four times
- 9:24Speaker 1: per game, if you trust what you got with Morris
- 9:27Speaker 1: and Bishop, that may be enough. It has been a
- 9:30Speaker 1: phenomenal ground game. And they leaned into it. They tired
- 9:33Speaker 1: down Alabama's front seven. By the time that we got
- 9:36Speaker 1: to the fourth quarter and we were talking about that
- 9:38Speaker 1: 15-play drive, You under trust that the linebackers like Mertz
- 9:41Speaker 1: or like Hubbard coming down or Dijon Lee coming on
- 9:44Speaker 1: in for the cornerback position was making the tackle because
- 9:47Speaker 1: they were bullying and tiring down Alabama's defensive line that
- 9:51Speaker 1: Bishop was guaranteed at least game two. It was positive traction.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And so at that point, run as much time off
- 9:57Speaker 1: the clock as possible and put pressure on a young quarterback.
- 10:00Speaker 1: playing in this environment for the first time of his career.
- 10:04Speaker 1: You figure that that was going to be something that
- 10:05Speaker 1: would be beneficial to you, and it did. That's a
- 10:08Speaker 1: testament to what you have with the offensive play calling.
- 10:10Speaker 1: That's a testament to what you have with your running back.
- 10:11Speaker 1: But it's also a testament to what you have with
- 10:12Speaker 1: the offensive line. For the most part, they did a
- 10:15Speaker 1: phenomenal job keeping the rushing attack going. Two tackles for
- 10:21Speaker 1: loss in the day and one sack. And one sack,
- 10:24Speaker 1: I believe, came on the second or third drive. So
- 10:27Speaker 1: you talk about after that opening, like when it was 9-0.
- 10:31Speaker 1: That was the only time that it felt like there
- 10:32Speaker 1: was pressure going. Yonsei Pierre was credited with both a
- 10:35Speaker 1: tackle for a loss and a sack in this game.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And nobody else could get home on George McIntyre. Credit
- 10:40Speaker 1: regrets through the offensive line, especially for when you lost
- 10:43Speaker 1: David Sanders for that one part of the second quarter,
- 10:45Speaker 1: and you still were able to put yourself in position
- 10:47Speaker 1: to where you were moving the football. Nothing came of it.
- 10:50Speaker 1: But honestly, the only reason why Alabama was able to
- 10:53Speaker 1: score and why it was a two-point affair going into
- 10:55Speaker 1: halftime were the self-inflicted wounds. By Tennessee. That was it.
- 10:59Speaker 1: You had an interception that got you into field goal.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I mean, that put you into already field goal range
- 11:03Speaker 1: for Alabama. And then the second time, you had the punt.
- 11:06Speaker 1: The muff punt. That was about it. And on the
- 11:09Speaker 1: muff punt play, if I'm not mistaken, just so we're clear,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I don't lose my mind here, I'm pretty sure that
- 11:17Speaker 1: Alabama punted at that point. I'm like 95% sure that
- 11:22Speaker 1: Alabama had a punt on that play. So it's like,
- 11:25Speaker 1: even still... You got the ball back, and nothing came
- 11:28Speaker 1: of it. It was a dominating defensive performance. And there
- 11:33Speaker 1: was no answer for Kayla DeBoer. There was no answer
- 11:35Speaker 1: for Alabama. There was no answer for Ryan Grubb. And
- 11:38Speaker 1: now they have to go back home to Tuscaloosa and
- 11:40Speaker 1: ask themselves, what can we do to get back to
- 11:44Speaker 1: playing the version that we were before Georgia, heading on
- 11:48Speaker 1: into key matchups that we have to win? Like next
- 11:51Speaker 1: week against Texas A & M. Or in three weeks
- 11:54Speaker 1: when we got to go down to the Bayou to
- 11:55Speaker 1: take on LSU. Or God forbid taking on a team
- 11:59Speaker 1: like Auburn. We can't afford those losses. Alabama now is
- 12:04Speaker 1: sitting here wondering where the hell do we go from here?
- 12:07Speaker 1: Because I don't know if we can go 10-2 this season.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I won't put it against them with the way their
- 12:12Speaker 1: schedule is. But you know what else I won't put
- 12:14Speaker 1: against their schedule? Tennessee going 10-2. Or better yet 10-1.
- 12:18Speaker 1: You go into a bye week, and then you come
- 12:20Speaker 1: on out to face off against South Carolina. Who knows
- 12:22Speaker 1: what that team is going to be. You get to
- 12:24Speaker 1: welcome in Kentucky. You get to go to Texas A
- 12:26Speaker 1: & M, but that game no longer feels like a
- 12:28Speaker 1: house of horrors. LSU may or may not be challenging,
- 12:31Speaker 1: depending on what version of the offense you get that day.
- 12:33Speaker 1: But the way your defense is playing, and it being
- 12:35Speaker 1: in Neyland, that may be another easy upset that wouldn't
- 12:39Speaker 1: even be an upset, in my opinion, for Tennessee. And
- 12:41Speaker 1: you close out the year against Vanderbilt. A team that
- 12:43Speaker 1: we said at the start of the year probably would
- 12:45Speaker 1: take an 8-4 season as a victory for year one
- 12:49Speaker 1: of the Jim Knowles defense may now be playing for
- 12:52Speaker 1: a spot in the college football playoff hunt. It's not
- 12:55Speaker 1: out of the realm of possibility. Now again, the offense
- 12:57Speaker 1: is going to have to play better when it comes
- 12:58Speaker 1: to the passing attack. You're going to need more from
- 13:00Speaker 1: George McIntyre. But still, nobody should look today and say
- 13:03Speaker 1: that McIntyre didn't do his job. 21-31. Didn't have a
- 13:08Speaker 1: touchdown pass. But he did complete 7... Third down throws.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Mike Matthews had 85 yards. Brandt had 39. You threw
- 13:19Speaker 1: the ball around to six different receivers and everyone made
- 13:21Speaker 1: a play. You saw your defense kind of put you
- 13:24Speaker 1: in a position where you could kind of bail out
- 13:25Speaker 1: of trouble when your offense couldn't get the ball rolling.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Gotta feel pretty good about your chances. But you go
- 13:30Speaker 1: into the bye week and you have an opportunity to
- 13:32Speaker 1: get right. My bad, you don't go into the bye week.
- 13:34Speaker 1: You go into South Carolina next week. My apologies. You
- 13:36Speaker 1: go into South Carolina next week and then you have
- 13:40Speaker 1: an opportunity to go get right afterwards. Tennessee's in a
- 13:42Speaker 1: really good spot. My point is that Tennessee is in
- 13:45Speaker 1: a very good spot before they have to go into
- 13:48Speaker 1: the bye weekend Halloween weekend. That was where I meant.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Not in the 24th. Next weekend, go to South Carolina.
- 13:53Speaker 1: When you go to South Carolina, depending on what you
- 13:55Speaker 1: get from South Carolina, that may end up being a
- 13:57Speaker 1: game that you just lay waste against the North sellers.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And lo and behold, we start looking more towards you
- 14:03Speaker 1: as a team to beat. Offensively, you leaned into Deshaun Bishop.
- 14:06Speaker 1: He did his job. Defensively, they played out of their
- 14:09Speaker 1: freaking mind. And it was a performance to where I
- 14:11Speaker 1: left no shred of doubt. And I can tell you what,
- 14:13Speaker 1: as you continue to celebrate throughout Knoxville tonight, as you
- 14:15Speaker 1: continue to look at what the future entails when it
- 14:18Speaker 1: comes to Josh Heupel at the helm, let me remind
- 14:22Speaker 1: everybody that this was a game that nobody should be
- 14:27Speaker 1: questioning who was the better team. Because for four quarters
- 14:31Speaker 1: from the jump, Tennessee played better. From four quarters from
- 14:33Speaker 1: the jump, Tennessee looked like the more physically imposing team.
- 14:38Speaker 1: and the thing that I hope that most people take
- 14:39Speaker 1: away from this matchup, more than anything else, you don't
- 14:43Speaker 1: walk away with an easy win at a place like
- 14:47Speaker 1: Neyland Stadium. I know what Death Valley is like at night.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I've been to Death Valley, and I've been to multiple
- 14:51Speaker 1: college football vicinities at night, and I truly believe that
- 14:54Speaker 1: one of the greatest atmospheres on a Saturday is Neyland Stadium.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Because I remember going to games when I was in
- 14:59Speaker 1: school and watching as Tennessee against unwonderwhelming opponents during the
- 15:05Speaker 1: Derrick Dooley days in the early part of the Butch
- 15:07Speaker 1: Jones era was still filling out to the brim. And
- 15:12Speaker 1: now they have something that is actually reminiscent of their
- 15:16Speaker 1: glory days. Neyland Stadium, in my opinion, is the most
- 15:20Speaker 1: intimidating place to play in college football. And I think
- 15:23Speaker 1: that more people are going to pay attention to it
- 15:25Speaker 1: after today. Because Alabama, with the quarterback that we all
- 15:28Speaker 1: were talking about being in the Heisman Trophy conversation, Alabama,
- 15:32Speaker 1: with a running back tandem that had started to find
- 15:34Speaker 1: its rhythm, Alabama, with a defense that would not quit,
- 15:38Speaker 1: laid down to die for about three and a half
- 15:41Speaker 1: quarters during their stay in Neyland. And most teams, I think,
- 15:45Speaker 1: come on through that building. will not be walking out
- 15:47Speaker 1: the other side unscathed. But let me know in the
- 15:49Speaker 1: comment section down below what were your thoughts on Tennessee's
- 15:51Speaker 1: massive win, dominant win, smoke them if you got them
