- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Right, this is a Colin Moncria. Whose line is it?
- 0:05Speaker 2: Anyway you're listening to tech talk radio.
- 0:07Speaker 3: I don't know how it works.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Oh magical shock to me.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Welcome to another episode of tech Talk Radio. I'm justin Lemme,
- 0:15Speaker 3: I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean Weird. Oh that was weird,
- 0:22Speaker 3: out of order. I mean we never do that.
- 0:24Speaker 1: You got to change it up once in a while,
- 0:25Speaker 1: you know, every once in a while.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Yeah. Because then.
- 0:29Speaker 1: All right, so next week you've got a Sean all.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Right, how are you guys doing?
- 0:34Speaker 1: Man good, It's good to see you.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I know you.
- 0:35Speaker 1: You had a busy week. Sean just got back from
- 0:38Speaker 1: vacation like wood.
- 0:40Speaker 2: No, we were not glamping this time, ten ten days
- 0:45Speaker 2: in the Upper Peninsula. It was not lambing it. Yes,
- 0:48Speaker 2: there were cabins, right, but okay, it was a very
- 0:52Speaker 2: limited technology.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Well, do tell tell how does it go?
- 0:55Speaker 2: It was great. We've talked about this strip before because
- 0:57Speaker 2: we go to the same place every year. It's my
- 0:59Speaker 2: wife's family cabins that they rent, so they're her wife's
- 1:03Speaker 2: from the Escanaba, Michigan, which is part of the Peninsula
- 1:06Speaker 2: and so they rent out all the cabins of a
- 1:07Speaker 2: resort called Sunset Pines in Curtis, Michigan. There's about sixty
- 1:11Speaker 2: five people that come to this, so it's all extended.
- 1:14Speaker 2: It's her dad's side of the family. He has seven siblings.
- 1:17Speaker 2: It's a big family. But it's in a rural part
- 1:19Speaker 2: of northern Michigan. So it's one bar of cell phone
- 1:22Speaker 2: service if you're.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Lucky and they hell for you.
- 1:26Speaker 2: The owners do have a starlink, but it's not accessible
- 1:30Speaker 2: to people that come and stay there. You can use
- 1:32Speaker 2: the hues net, which is like garbage satellite Internet.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Wait, so the owners of this place, they make a
- 1:37Speaker 1: point of letting everybody know, yeah, we got starlink, but
- 1:40Speaker 1: you can't use it.
- 1:42Speaker 2: I mean, it's even starlink if you try to distribute
- 1:44Speaker 2: it across I mean you'd have to add a bunch
- 1:46Speaker 2: of mesh networks. It'd be not super easy to do.
- 1:49Speaker 2: But it costs, like it costs money to do.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, because you only get well starlink, you
- 1:53Speaker 3: only get a limited amount of bandwidth, you know, like
- 1:56Speaker 3: you sign up for tiers of bandwidth and if you
- 1:58Speaker 3: got what'd you say, sixty five cabins up there.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I mean, no, it's it's twelve cabins. But sixty five people.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Oh sorry, so okay, yeah, yeah, well sixty five people
- 2:07Speaker 1: that's with their own device.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's gonna eat up your band with real quick. Yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So, I mean, I'm sure they could charge for it,
- 2:12Speaker 2: but you know, it's the whole point is to not
- 2:14Speaker 2: be connected on this trip.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So it's you're going fishing, you're on the beach, you're wait,
- 2:18Speaker 1: are you telling me that you can actually go somewhere
- 2:21Speaker 1: and not be connected to the internet.
- 2:24Speaker 2: How do you do that?
- 2:25Speaker 3: Whoa? I never knew it that.
- 2:27Speaker 2: It's fantastic. Oh my gosh, I got.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I wonder how many how many of our listeners would
- 2:32Speaker 1: ever attempt that. I mean that means, I mean you
- 2:36Speaker 1: have to have your smartphone with you, right, I mean
- 2:38Speaker 1: you take that technology. But how do you say, Okay,
- 2:41Speaker 1: I'm not gonna take this. I'm not gonna take that.
- 2:44Speaker 1: You still have a plex server that you take?
- 2:46Speaker 3: Right?
- 2:46Speaker 2: No, didn't take that?
- 2:47Speaker 3: Whoa? Really well I took it.
- 2:49Speaker 2: So so for the boys, right, so they nighttime, we
- 2:52Speaker 2: let them watch an episode of YouTube or something. So
- 2:55Speaker 2: I've downloaded a bunch of that onto an iPad A
- 2:58Speaker 2: and I have. I don't need it to be on.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It doesn't have internet, doesn't like Wi Fi, but it
- 3:02Speaker 2: doesn't have cell phone service on it. So it's a
- 3:04Speaker 2: handful of episodes that they could watch. We had our
- 3:06Speaker 2: phones and an iPad.
- 3:08Speaker 3: I just I'm just so flabbergasted because when I was
- 3:10Speaker 3: a kid and my parents we went camping, and Andy,
- 3:13Speaker 3: you can attest to this too.
- 3:15Speaker 1: We went camping.
- 3:16Speaker 3: First off, we didn't have smartphones back when I was
- 3:19Speaker 3: a kid when we were camping, and we didn't have TV.
- 3:21Speaker 3: So like when we went camping, it was like we
- 3:24Speaker 3: would go out and look at bugs. We would find
- 3:28Speaker 3: ant hills, and we would find sticks and try to
- 3:32Speaker 3: find the best stick and of the coolest rock. Like
- 3:37Speaker 3: this is what the world is missing nowadays, like everybody
- 3:40Speaker 3: is so into their devices. Like couple nights ago, Eric
- 3:44Speaker 3: was like, I'm bored because I told him no TV.
- 3:46Speaker 3: I'm bored. Go out and find go out and find insects.
- 3:49Speaker 3: And he's like what He's like, are we cavemen? And
- 3:52Speaker 3: I was like, oh my god, oh it is so true.
- 3:58Speaker 3: It's so true.
- 3:59Speaker 2: To cerate your point, Like my boys like to watch YouTube.
- 4:03Speaker 2: They like to watch the fun videos that they find.
- 4:05Speaker 2: And but we will just turn music on stream Pandora
- 4:09Speaker 2: or put music on that we have around the house
- 4:12Speaker 2: and they will do puzzles, they'll rebooks, they do everything
- 4:15Speaker 2: else but watch TV. So there, it's not always on YouTube. Yeah,
- 4:18Speaker 2: back to my story. So you're lucky if you get
- 4:21Speaker 2: one bar of cell phone service there, right, So if
- 4:23Speaker 2: you want to get one, if you want to get service,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you have to drive into town, which is like six
- 4:27Speaker 2: or seven miles. And I was having issues with my phone. Right,
- 4:30Speaker 2: Caitlin was able to connect and get one bar of
- 4:33Speaker 2: service to check in with my parents because my phone
- 4:36Speaker 2: was having issues.
- 4:37Speaker 1: So, come to find out, and your phone is a
- 4:39Speaker 1: what again and iPhone thirteen ro, but you have the
- 4:43Speaker 1: iOS and I'm.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Running and I'm running the iOS twenty six developer beta.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So I was trying to figure out what was going
- 4:49Speaker 2: on my phone. The battery was dying super fast, like
- 4:51Speaker 2: I couldn't figure out what was going on. Even on
- 4:53Speaker 2: their crappy Wi Fi it was working very well, and
- 4:56Speaker 2: so I just did some investigation. Come to find out,
- 4:59Speaker 2: my phone just decided you no longer have a.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Sim oh oh you're kidding me.
- 5:04Speaker 1: It couldn't have.
- 5:05Speaker 2: So no longer have a SIM. No cell phone plan
- 5:07Speaker 2: was attached to my phone period.
- 5:09Speaker 1: So now were you running a physical SIM or a eSIM.
- 5:13Speaker 2: So this the story gets a little more complicated. Way
- 5:17Speaker 2: back when I bought my good back when I bought
- 5:19Speaker 2: my phone in twenty twenty two, I bought it, got
- 5:22Speaker 2: the physical sim. Two days later, it fell off the
- 5:25Speaker 2: counter at work in the bathroom, onto the toa floor
- 5:28Speaker 2: and shattered at the backlass. So they hadn't bought a
- 5:30Speaker 2: case for it yet. So I took it to back
- 5:31Speaker 2: to the Apple store because I had Apple Care, and
- 5:33Speaker 2: they said, nop, no, it's covered under Apple Care. No problem.
- 5:36Speaker 2: We don't have spare parts for the phones yet because
- 5:38Speaker 2: I just bought it was the week of release, so
- 5:40Speaker 2: I got a whole new phone. I got a whole
- 5:42Speaker 2: new iPhone thirteen.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Break a phone like within four days of it coming out.
- 5:46Speaker 2: But at that point they didn't They wouldn't activate a
- 5:48Speaker 2: new physical SIM, so they just activated an eSIM.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Cool problem solved enough, right, Yeah.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Three years later we're here, this is the problem having
- 5:55Speaker 2: because not finding the SIM whatever. Drive into town to
- 5:59Speaker 2: the public library and Curtis, Michigan, which is like smaller
- 6:02Speaker 2: than my house, and get on there really old computer
- 6:07Speaker 2: and Connective Horizon and get somebody.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And I'm just picturing the dial up sound.
- 6:11Speaker 2: As Connective Horizon, and you know, they have me check
- 6:21Speaker 2: my email and scan a QR code with my phone
- 6:24Speaker 2: and it tries to activate the sim over the Wi
- 6:26Speaker 2: Fi just sits there and spins. Doesn't do anything, So
- 6:30Speaker 2: you'd restart my phone, try it again, issued me a
- 6:34Speaker 2: new second. Doesn't work, couldn't make it work, and I
- 6:37Speaker 2: wasn't gonna. I was like, you know what, I don't
- 6:39Speaker 2: have service anyways. It doesn't matter, Like I'll just deal
- 6:42Speaker 2: with it when I drive back home.
- 6:44Speaker 3: So two days ago, you felt naked, right, you felt naked.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I really I really didn't. I really didn't. It really
- 6:50Speaker 2: didn't bother me that I was disconnected. I mean, we
- 6:52Speaker 2: had Calen's phone, so if there was an emergency, it
- 6:54Speaker 2: wasn't a big deal. So I go to the Apple
- 6:56Speaker 2: Store and they're like, well, you're running the developer bat
- 6:59Speaker 2: so why don't wait? Just because they ran a hardware
- 7:02Speaker 2: skin and it said there was a hardware failure whatever, whatever,
- 7:05Speaker 2: He's like, all right, let's let's restore your phone back
- 7:07Speaker 2: to iOS eighteen. Oh so they restored it back to
- 7:10Speaker 2: iOS eighteen, and now it was saying there were two
- 7:13Speaker 2: sims in it. What the two sims that we registered
- 7:21Speaker 2: with Verizon worked, But there was an issue with the
- 7:24Speaker 2: developer beta that was no longer showing the sims.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Oh no, now that there were now that there were,
- 7:31Speaker 4: Now that there were two sims on there, I could
- 7:34Speaker 4: make phone calls, but I message and text messages didn't
- 7:38Speaker 4: know where to go because there were two sims and
- 7:40Speaker 4: that they was conflicting.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Oh boy, then it was a Verizon problem. Right, So
- 7:44Speaker 2: I go over to Verizon and they're like, oh, this
- 7:46Speaker 2: is weird. Cool, let me pop out your physical SIM card.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I was like, wait, I don't have a physical SIM card.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Pops the store open. There's a physical SIM card?
- 7:55Speaker 3: Are you kidding me?
- 7:57Speaker 2: I had a physical SIM card the whole time.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Was it the the SIM from the other one? It
- 8:02Speaker 3: had to have been.
- 8:03Speaker 2: I don't know, I thought, but my phone never had
- 8:06Speaker 2: a physical SIM attached to it. It was always an SIM.
- 8:10Speaker 2: So they moved the SIM card over.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Is this some David Blaine stuff?
- 8:15Speaker 2: So anyway, she's the lady. Fors Is like, we have
- 8:18Speaker 2: to activate a new sim. We'll give you a new
- 8:20Speaker 2: physical sim card. It's like perfect, great, new physical sim card. Perfect,
- 8:22Speaker 2: let's do it. Solve the problem. An hour at Verizon
- 8:25Speaker 2: and it was up and running. It was fine. Update
- 8:27Speaker 2: back to the developer beta.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Run my, How would you do that?
- 8:30Speaker 2: Because my iCloud backup is in developer beta. I couldn't know.
- 8:35Speaker 3: This is why you don't do betas.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Oh so I don't have a current you know, I'm
- 8:42Speaker 2: a month in on the developer beta. I don't have
- 8:44Speaker 2: a current iOS eight team backup.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Yeah, betas back.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Onto the iOS twenty six beta. Can't figure out how
- 8:52Speaker 2: to restore my To get my iCloud backup, I had
- 8:55Speaker 2: to erase the phone once I moved it up to
- 8:59Speaker 2: iOS twenty six to then restore from making a new
- 9:02Speaker 2: device and then restore from my iclub backup.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Wait, I'm sorry, hold on, we'll say you said that
- 9:07Speaker 3: they they they reverted your phone back to iOS eighteen. Correct,
- 9:12Speaker 3: that was the iOS back four years ago? No, no, no, no,
- 9:17Speaker 3: what is the current iOS right now?
- 9:20Speaker 2: iOS eighteen?
- 9:21Speaker 3: So why are you talking about?
- 9:22Speaker 1: You're on iOS twenty six that's the beta for what
- 9:25Speaker 1: that's the beta.
- 9:26Speaker 2: So iOS twenty six is going to be the new iOS.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Coming in what happened in nineteen? It went from me,
- 9:34Speaker 3: they went to fiveteen.
- 9:35Speaker 2: They went from eighteen to twenty six.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Name this is why I don't like Apple.
- 9:38Speaker 1: They pulled a Microsoft.
- 9:40Speaker 2: So I upgrade it, I restore or you know, reset
- 9:45Speaker 2: all the settings and then reimage it to my iclub
- 9:48Speaker 2: backup and everything's fuck fine because when I went to Apple,
- 9:51Speaker 2: they had said, hey, your battery is at like seventy
- 9:54Speaker 2: total seventy percent total battery life, bring it back in,
- 9:56Speaker 2: will replace the battery for free because it's covered in
- 9:58Speaker 2: your Apple care. I said, deployment for Monday. Went back
- 10:01Speaker 2: in Monday. They're like, oh great, everything worked out. You
- 10:03Speaker 2: were you know, glad you worked out yesterday for you?
- 10:07Speaker 2: Oh you put it back on the developer beta. We
- 10:10Speaker 2: we won't service any devices on the developer beta. We
- 10:14Speaker 2: dorade back to I was.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Eighteen, so you had to go back to eighteen again.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I had to go back to eighteen. Things the hold
- 10:21Speaker 2: up back to eighteen?
- 10:23Speaker 3: Do replace a battery?
- 10:25Speaker 2: I whatever?
- 10:26Speaker 1: This is why everybody, you don't do betas.
- 10:30Speaker 3: No, this is why you don't go with Apple?
- 10:33Speaker 1: Oh, come on, everybody, every company does some kind of
- 10:36Speaker 1: beta that's that gets messed up.
- 10:40Speaker 3: No, yes, this is why you don't go with Apple.
- 10:41Speaker 2: So then I had to, you know, I left the Apples.
- 10:43Speaker 2: You know, it took him in an hour to do
- 10:44Speaker 2: the battery. So I walked down the mall, which was weird.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Spend more money?
- 10:47Speaker 1: Did you buy an androids?
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah? Mostly empty stores, right.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Mostly empty stores. Yeah, I walked too, like an fye,
- 10:54Speaker 2: which was awful. It's just like cheap garbage, like pop
- 10:58Speaker 2: culture garbage. I mean, it was just it was an
- 11:00Speaker 2: interesting experience walking around the mall.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Got lunch at the food court, which is good.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Oh yeah, what'd you get? What'd you get there?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Which one Asian something?
- 11:08Speaker 3: I don't Yeah?
- 11:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, of course that's all they have that in
- 11:10Speaker 1: the ciborrow they got to have borrow to borrow and
- 11:13Speaker 1: in a random Asian restaurant.
- 11:15Speaker 3: That's all they have at food courts anymore.
- 11:17Speaker 2: But uh so ended up coming coming home, had to
- 11:19Speaker 2: do the same thing, had to update it to iOS
- 11:21Speaker 2: twenty six. We still we okay, can we redo my
- 11:25Speaker 2: iCloud again?
- 11:26Speaker 1: Well wait a minute, couldn't you have gone. Couldn't you
- 11:29Speaker 1: have gone onto a Mac and then connect it to
- 11:32Speaker 1: your iCloud and gotten it that way.
- 11:34Speaker 2: You can't go from iOS eighteen, okay, iCloud backup, that's
- 11:39Speaker 2: in a different version. You have to go to that version.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Of It's like on that device.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I had to go up to iOS twenty six Developer Beta,
- 11:46Speaker 2: then wipe it so it was as a new device, right,
- 11:50Speaker 2: and then restore it from my iCloud.
- 11:52Speaker 3: You know, if Tim Cook is listening to this show,
- 11:55Speaker 3: probably laughing his butt.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Off right now, probably frustrating.
- 11:59Speaker 3: That has got to be.
- 12:00Speaker 1: That is so frust that's the same frustrations I ran
- 12:03Speaker 1: in two shone with this new laptop. All right, number one.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I mean I wanted to ask you guys. I got
- 12:09Speaker 1: a Lenovo five point thirty right. I bought it back
- 12:12Speaker 1: in twenty nineteen, and it was great. Everything was great.
- 12:17Speaker 1: One morning I used it, I had it on a
- 12:20Speaker 1: table and then somebody said, oh, I need a file.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Can you send me the file? So I went, got
- 12:25Speaker 1: it off that laptop, put it on a flash drive,
- 12:27Speaker 1: went to my desktop and did it that way. I
- 12:30Speaker 1: get to work and I open up and plug everything in,
- 12:33Speaker 1: I open it up wouldn't power up, couldn't figure out
- 12:36Speaker 1: what the heck was going on. No power checked the charger.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I had a light there. I had a light that
- 12:42Speaker 1: it was charging nothing, nothing at all. So I had
- 12:47Speaker 1: to go without. I had to go without a laptop.
- 12:50Speaker 3: It was like for a whole show. It was crazy.
- 12:52Speaker 1: So I get it home and I start, you know,
- 12:56Speaker 1: reading about it, and I go ahead and I open
- 12:58Speaker 1: it up. I look, everything's connet right, it looks good.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And I read about this Novo button that Milanovos have
- 13:06Speaker 1: on the side of them, so you have a power button.
- 13:09Speaker 1: And the way that this one's designed is terrible. It's
- 13:11Speaker 1: got the keyboard up on top. It's basically a sealed keyboard, right,
- 13:16Speaker 1: it's not like the keyboard that pops through. And you've
- 13:18Speaker 1: got a power button. So the only way to get
- 13:22Speaker 1: to this button is by removing the motherboard this, you know,
- 13:27Speaker 1: the fan system, everything, and so I don't know it's
- 13:30Speaker 1: the button screwed up. So I press the Novo button
- 13:34Speaker 1: and a power I get a power light and it
- 13:36Speaker 1: comes on and I'm like, well, there's no message, no warning, nothing,
- 13:40Speaker 1: It's working. So I'm all happy and I think, okay,
- 13:43Speaker 1: whatever it was it's it's fixed. I shut it off.
- 13:45Speaker 1: The next day, I decided to take a look at it.
- 13:49Speaker 1: I got power up, no power, so I thought, hmm,
- 13:52Speaker 1: maybe that Novo button has something to do with it.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I pull the back off of it again and I
- 13:58Speaker 1: push that button and nothing, and I'm I'm like frustrated, sothing.
- 14:03Speaker 1: It's got to be maybe the Sea Moss battery. So
- 14:06Speaker 1: I go ahead and I order a Sea Moss battery.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Then I'm thinking, well, maybe it's the battery itself. You know,
- 14:11Speaker 1: it didn't feel swelling. So I ordered the battery right
- 14:14Speaker 1: that comes from I Fix It seventy dollars, so I
- 14:17Speaker 1: get that. I get that in a couple of days,
- 14:20Speaker 1: and I hook it all up and it powers up.
- 14:21Speaker 1: But it doesn't power up with a power button on top.
- 14:24Speaker 1: It powers up with the Novo button, So I think, okay,
- 14:27Speaker 1: there's something else here. And then it's when I shut
- 14:29Speaker 1: it down, right, I go to start it up again,
- 14:32Speaker 1: same thing. I have to disconnect the Sea Moss and
- 14:35Speaker 1: the battery, wait a second, reconnect it, and then power it.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Hit that Novo button and it powers up. So I
- 14:41Speaker 1: have no idea it full. Once it's powered up, it
- 14:44Speaker 1: performs great.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I don't know exactly in your particular case, but it
- 14:48Speaker 3: does sound like it's a failing motherboard. But I can
- 14:50Speaker 3: tell you right now, I've had the exact, almost exact
- 14:53Speaker 3: same experience with my laptop recently. So I have a
- 14:59Speaker 3: work laptop. I have an Aceus rog Strix, really nice.
- 15:06Speaker 3: You know, it's I think I.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Remember when you got it. It's top of the line.
- 15:09Speaker 3: It's top of the line. It's classified as a gaming laptop.
- 15:13Speaker 3: I don't necessarily use it for gaming. I use it
- 15:16Speaker 3: for a lot of photoshop, video editing things that I
- 15:18Speaker 3: have to do it where because I have to troubleshoot
- 15:21Speaker 3: a lot of other people's problems so they have a
- 15:25Speaker 3: problem with like photoshop. I have to have Photoshop so
- 15:27Speaker 3: I can figure out what's going on with it. Right anyway,
- 15:31Speaker 3: top of the line laptop. All of a sudden, just recently,
- 15:34Speaker 3: it was about probably about a month ago, two months ago.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Maybe I would just notice that I would shut it
- 15:40Speaker 3: down and when I would go to turn it back
- 15:41Speaker 3: on the keyboard because it's an RGB keyboard, the keyboard
- 15:46Speaker 3: would flash up and then nothing and it would just
- 15:50Speaker 3: it would it would be nothing. The black screen no
- 15:52Speaker 3: boot logo, nothing. It would just go back to being dead.
- 15:55Speaker 3: And I pressed the button again power button and then
- 15:59Speaker 3: the same thing. Or to flash up nothing, I would
- 16:01Speaker 3: have to hold down the power button for sixty seconds,
- 16:05Speaker 3: not thirty sixty, because sixty will reset the sea moss.
- 16:09Speaker 3: It like clears it almost it clears the sea mos. Yeah,
- 16:12Speaker 3: and then boom it would power up just fine. But
- 16:16Speaker 3: day and time was wrong because oh yeah, it clears
- 16:19Speaker 3: the sea moss. So I would find that it would happen.
- 16:22Speaker 3: It started happening once, then it would happen again, and
- 16:25Speaker 3: then again again again, and then again again again again
- 16:28Speaker 3: again again. It would happen more and more often as
- 16:31Speaker 3: time went on, and so I started looking up this
- 16:33Speaker 3: this this problem, and there was no concrete evidence about it.
- 16:39Speaker 3: But it does sound similar to what your problem is, Andy.
- 16:43Speaker 3: It from what I can deduce from looking at resources
- 16:48Speaker 3: using AI and also forums, it's a problem with the motherboard.
- 16:52Speaker 3: It could be problem with the CPU coming loose from
- 16:56Speaker 3: the motherboard because these computers, especially mine. I don't know
- 17:00Speaker 3: about yours, but mine was like again classified as a
- 17:02Speaker 3: gaming laptop. It had a very powerful graphics card. The
- 17:06Speaker 3: fans were always blowing like crazy. It could be overheating
- 17:11Speaker 3: and eventually melted some of the contacts of the motherboard
- 17:17Speaker 3: that could be and so I finally was like, look,
- 17:20Speaker 3: I can't. I can't do this anymore. I can't.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I have to have a.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Laptop that works for work. So I went to my
- 17:26Speaker 3: boss and I said, look, I know I just bought
- 17:28Speaker 3: this laptop for like nineteen hundred dollars a couple of
- 17:31Speaker 3: years ago. It's not working, and I have to have
- 17:34Speaker 3: as the IT manager. I have to have a laptop
- 17:36Speaker 3: that works. So I said, do I have your permission
- 17:39Speaker 3: to get in the laptop? And he's like, yeah, that's fine.
- 17:41Speaker 3: So I bought an HP Omen sixteen Max. You went
- 17:45Speaker 3: with an HP that surprises me a fan of HP.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 17:51Speaker 3: But I did a lot of research on this and
- 17:54Speaker 3: I said, look, I need to stay within a certain
- 17:56Speaker 3: amount of budget because I don't have a lot of
- 17:58Speaker 3: money in my budget for work. I said, I need
- 18:01Speaker 3: to be a powerful computer. I needed to be able
- 18:04Speaker 3: to have a great graphics card for you know, doing
- 18:06Speaker 3: photo and video editing, just in case I need it.
- 18:09Speaker 3: But I do need it to have a good CPU. Now,
- 18:11Speaker 3: my a SEUs, the one that was having problems. Was
- 18:14Speaker 3: an Intel I nine uh, thirteenth, Jen, I want to say,
- 18:20Speaker 3: that's a.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Pretty good good.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Well, so was it? Was it the micro code issue
- 18:26Speaker 2: that you had?
- 18:27Speaker 3: What's that?
- 18:29Speaker 2: So in the thirteen and fourteenth generations nine's had micro
- 18:34Speaker 2: code issues where the micro code would literally melt literally
- 18:38Speaker 2: melt the processor.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I okay, here's the thing. So with that, a SEUs,
- 18:44Speaker 3: my employee has the exact same computer as me, exact
- 18:50Speaker 3: like we bought two copies of that computer. His is
- 18:54Speaker 3: also having the exact same issue.
- 18:56Speaker 2: That's gotta be probably the micro code issue.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Yes, So now this micro code issue, can you explain
- 19:01Speaker 3: more about it? Like, I'll let you look it up.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Let me continue with my story after the.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Break, I'll kind of give a recap on what the
- 19:06Speaker 2: micro code is.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, please please do because this is very interesting
- 19:09Speaker 3: to me because I don't know about this. So anyway,
- 19:12Speaker 3: I decided to go instead of Intel because I heard
- 19:15Speaker 3: about there was issues with the thirteenth and fourteen gen
- 19:18Speaker 3: I went with an AMD rise in nine. So the
- 19:22Speaker 3: hp omen Max sixteen has an AMD rise In nine, right,
- 19:29Speaker 3: and it has an RTX fifty sixty. Oh man, wow,
- 19:34Speaker 3: which is really interesting because half the time this is okay,
- 19:38Speaker 3: this is really weird. But when I launched the Nvidia
- 19:41Speaker 3: app on the on the computer right, Windows tells me
- 19:44Speaker 3: I have a forty seventy, But the Nvidia app tells
- 19:47Speaker 3: me I have a fifty sixty. And when I go
- 19:49Speaker 3: to groc and I tell it I have an hp
- 19:52Speaker 3: omen Max sixteen with an RTX fifty sixty, it says, oh,
- 19:57Speaker 3: the user must be confused. There is no such thing
- 20:00Speaker 3: is a fifty sixty. They must have a forty seventy.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Are you kidding me? And Vidio recognizes it as a
- 20:05Speaker 3: fifty sixty, and that's what it was sold as. It
- 20:09Speaker 3: was a fifty sixty.
- 20:10Speaker 1: But I can tell you right now, I have tested
- 20:13Speaker 1: it with some video editing apps.
- 20:15Speaker 3: I even went ahead. I even did the unthinkable. I
- 20:19Speaker 3: installed Balder's Gate three right on this, which is one
- 20:22Speaker 3: of the most graphically intensive games. It runs it like
- 20:28Speaker 3: butter Really to hear the fans fans, No, the fans
- 20:34Speaker 3: are hardly even present. Now that's the big difference because
- 20:37Speaker 3: between my aceus had a thirty seventy TI, so it's
- 20:41Speaker 3: two generations older. So even though on paper that the
- 20:45Speaker 3: thirty seventy TI is more powerful than the fifty sixty.
- 20:49Speaker 3: The fifty sixty is a lot more power efficient, so
- 20:53Speaker 3: I can I can run these these these power hungry
- 20:56Speaker 3: apps with a lot less power and a lot less
- 21:00Speaker 3: fan and a lot less heat.
- 21:03Speaker 1: HP has always been and I some of the longest
- 21:06Speaker 1: living laptops I had have been hps. But then HP
- 21:11Speaker 1: got into this this area there where I mean, yeah,
- 21:14Speaker 1: they bought, they bought you know, other companies that had
- 21:17Speaker 1: a gaming you know line, the whole bit, the omen uh.
- 21:20Speaker 1: And they then they got accused of bloatwear, and we
- 21:23Speaker 1: just saw a lot of bloatwear, a lot of stuff
- 21:24Speaker 1: that was.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Like this didn't come with any blotwear, which was crazy.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Really yeah for an HP that's caught me. Yeah, no, seriously,
- 21:32Speaker 3: this did not come with any bloatwear at all.
- 21:36Speaker 1: So I ended up I ended up doing this, say,
- 21:39Speaker 1: I had to get a laptop because I use it
- 21:41Speaker 1: for work, business, the whole bit. And I was I
- 21:44Speaker 1: was thinking, well, I've had I had that. I had
- 21:46Speaker 1: good luck with an Asus that eventually died, but it
- 21:49Speaker 1: been in service for many years. Then I went to
- 21:52Speaker 1: this Lenovo, being the fact that it was in service
- 21:54Speaker 1: for five six years and then it's it's been giving
- 21:58Speaker 1: me problems. I was like trying to figure out what
- 22:01Speaker 1: to get. I go to Walmart. They had their their rog.
- 22:04Speaker 1: They had a rog that was there, you know, Asus
- 22:07Speaker 1: Republican gamers. It was their top of the line. It
- 22:09Speaker 1: was marked down to twelve hundred dollars from sixteen hundred dollars,
- 22:14Speaker 1: but it was missing keys and it looked like it
- 22:17Speaker 1: had been beat up. And I asked the clerk, I said,
- 22:20Speaker 1: do you have any open box you know of? This
- 22:24Speaker 1: one that's marked down to twelve hundred. No, that's the one,
- 22:27Speaker 1: I said, but it's missing keys. And I said, tell
- 22:30Speaker 1: you what, you marked it down to nine, I'll buy it. Said, well,
- 22:32Speaker 1: you could talk to the manager. And I went to
- 22:34Speaker 1: the manager and I said, I told them the same thing. Well,
- 22:37Speaker 1: you know, well somebody will come along and probably just
- 22:40Speaker 1: want it, and I thought, okay, I'm not going to
- 22:42Speaker 1: spend that money on it. I ended up get myself
- 22:44Speaker 1: another Lenovo and it's it's an AMD. My first time
- 22:49Speaker 1: back to the AMD platform after so many years being Intel.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Let's see, IDA has gotten so much better. I'm pretty
- 22:56Speaker 1: impressed the problem with this thing and it's been driving
- 23:01Speaker 1: I reinstalled about three times. Was Windows Microsoft, Windows wants
- 23:06Speaker 1: to attach to everything, One drive wants to be your
- 23:11Speaker 1: best friend, and one drive. So one drive actually screwed
- 23:20Speaker 1: up my install in the studio because it grabbed the
- 23:23Speaker 1: desktop and I don't know what it did. It just
- 23:25Speaker 1: destroyed my desktop of another computer just because it was
- 23:30Speaker 1: they were sharing files on one drive. The worst experience ever.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And I don't mind one drive for a document like
- 23:38Speaker 1: being able to upload it and grab my document. I
- 23:41Speaker 1: don't want it to share desktops. I don't want it
- 23:43Speaker 1: to do all this. I have a backup solution for Micronus.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Just leave me alone when it comes to one drive.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Just just was awful. And I think I finally got
- 23:51Speaker 1: it set up. And now my big question I asked
- 23:53Speaker 1: you justin the other day. Should I go with a
- 23:55Speaker 1: local install like a local user on Windows, or do
- 24:01Speaker 1: I do the log into my Windows account, my Microsoft
- 24:04Speaker 1: account and go that way. Some people have said go
- 24:06Speaker 1: with local instead, So that's why I wasn't sure what
- 24:09Speaker 1: to do.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Connecting my computer to an account that is solely based
- 24:15Speaker 2: by Microsoft scares the crap out of me. Yeah, why
- 24:18Speaker 2: would you not just build a local account that's my opinion, Like,
- 24:21Speaker 2: that's what I do for my computers, right, and I
- 24:23Speaker 2: just connect things internally, like if my outlook, I've got
- 24:26Speaker 2: other things that I'll connect to, but I don't because
- 24:31Speaker 2: you have to authentic. I feel like it's gonna have
- 24:34Speaker 2: to authenticate to their servers every time you connect to it.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Yeah, just be like.
- 24:38Speaker 2: An active directory. I would just do local user like
- 24:40Speaker 2: I wouldn't connect it to an account.
- 24:42Speaker 3: I say, I've always just done what Microsoft wants because
- 24:48Speaker 3: part of it is. Part of it is because they
- 24:50Speaker 3: make it so gosh darn difficult to not do what
- 24:53Speaker 3: they want.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly exactly, the reminders, the.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Nags, well not even the next You can't even install
- 25:01Speaker 3: Windows now without connecting to a Microsoft account. If you
- 25:06Speaker 3: go to install a fresh copy of Windows, it's like,
- 25:08Speaker 3: all right, here's the part where you have to set
- 25:10Speaker 3: up Windows, sign into your account. There's no SKIP, there's
- 25:14Speaker 3: some work around there. There's a workaround, but you have
- 25:17Speaker 3: to type in a special command reboot the computer.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's you can't. You can't ben, you can't
- 25:26Speaker 2: have it plugged in. You can't have the Wi Fi
- 25:28Speaker 2: card plugged in because if it takes any semblance of
- 25:31Speaker 2: the Internet. It's like, whoa, you've got internet, bro? You
- 25:34Speaker 2: got you gotta Yeah, we know what you're doing. You
- 25:39Speaker 2: can't have an Internet cord plugged in. You can't have
- 25:41Speaker 2: the Wi Fi plugged in like it knows that.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Can you just say wi Fi plugged in? You do
- 25:48Speaker 3: you even Wi Fi? Bro?
- 25:50Speaker 2: So when I tried to do it, I built a
- 25:54Speaker 2: computer for my niece. I had to physically pull the
- 25:58Speaker 2: the p C I E wireless card out of it
- 26:01Speaker 2: because it would not You kept saying you've got wireless.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's ridiculous.
- 26:06Speaker 2: As I did that, ran the you know, no pass
- 26:09Speaker 2: whatever as shift F ten whatever the code is. Well,
- 26:12Speaker 2: I told you once I disconnected the Wi Fi card
- 26:14Speaker 2: from the from the motherboard, let me do it without.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I think it's like what ab ab up down, updown,
- 26:20Speaker 1: left right start? Yeah, yeah, I told you. The system
- 26:25Speaker 1: in the studio got messed up. Now I can work
- 26:27Speaker 1: my production stiff systems okay. But the other one that
- 26:31Speaker 1: I use for yeah, you know, editing and stuff like that.
- 26:34Speaker 1: So I'm thinking maybe it's time just put Linux mint
- 26:36Speaker 1: on this on one of them. But and then I
- 26:39Speaker 1: was thinking, well, the problem is then can I network.
- 26:42Speaker 1: You know, can I network with the other computers?
- 26:44Speaker 3: Of course you can.
- 26:45Speaker 1: And I started asking, uh chat GPT, all these technical questions,
- 26:52Speaker 1: and it told me, yeah, use Samba. Apparently, if you're
- 26:54Speaker 1: on Linux Mint and you use Samba, yeah you can network.
- 26:58Speaker 1: No limitations honestly to what you want to do. I mean,
- 27:01Speaker 1: you know, obviously there's gonna.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Be some Linux is just making like, here's the thing.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Every time Microsoft makes a mess up and they and
- 27:10Speaker 3: they take one step back, Linux takes like a half
- 27:14Speaker 3: a step forward.
- 27:15Speaker 1: It's just the thing about getting into people.
- 27:17Speaker 3: This is gonna take over.
- 27:18Speaker 1: It's it's the thing about getting into people's hands that hey,
- 27:22Speaker 1: here's something you could try. It's either gonna be relatively
- 27:25Speaker 1: inexpensive or free, and this will do what you wanted
- 27:28Speaker 1: to do. But it's not gonna look too different. Microsoft
- 27:31Speaker 1: keeps changing the the out the well not outlook the
- 27:34Speaker 1: look for its OS anyways, So why not here here's
- 27:37Speaker 1: something you may be familiar with. It looks like Windows
- 27:40Speaker 1: TAN or Windows.
- 27:41Speaker 3: The problem with Linux, though, there's I could go on
- 27:45Speaker 3: and on about Linux, but but here's the thing. But
- 27:47Speaker 3: the problem with Linux is one of the main problems
- 27:49Speaker 3: is as soon as people start to get into Linux.
- 27:55Speaker 3: It's like that that that famous meme where the guy
- 27:59Speaker 3: is hand in hand at the girl, but he's looking
- 28:01Speaker 3: back at the other more attractive girl. That okay, so
- 28:04Speaker 3: so okay. Let's imagine the guy is the user. The
- 28:07Speaker 3: girl that he's hand in hand with is Lenox. Meant
- 28:11Speaker 3: the girl that he's looking back at is Windows twelve.
- 28:17Speaker 3: And that's what happens every single time. Every same time
- 28:20Speaker 3: Lenox makes a couple of steps, Windows is like, hey,
- 28:23Speaker 3: we got this brand new operating system. It's pretty sweet.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Everybody's like, okay, I'll go back to Windows again.
- 28:28Speaker 1: If you see. I don't know. Here's the thing. I
- 28:30Speaker 1: think Microsoft believes that everybody wants AI. That's why they're
- 28:33Speaker 1: they're sticking everybody.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Major tech company thinks everybody wants AI. And I we
- 28:40Speaker 2: talked about this after the Worldwide Developer Conference about how
- 28:44Speaker 2: Apples this has prost distanced themselves from their own AI.
- 28:47Speaker 2: They've integrated ched GBT into the new i' you know, iPhone,
- 28:51Speaker 2: the new iOS, and I think that Apple's just coming
- 28:53Speaker 2: around realizing that AI is not all it's cut up
- 28:55Speaker 2: to me.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, maybe in certain aspects.
- 28:59Speaker 3: But there's a whole nother conversation about AI I could have.
- 29:02Speaker 3: We got to take a break.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Come back, Sean, you looked up some stuff on this
- 29:07Speaker 1: this code this this microprocessor code error that Intel had
- 29:10Speaker 1: with thirteen fourteen gen. So we'll go over that when
- 29:13Speaker 1: we come back with tech talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 29:16Speaker 1: I'm Sean de Weird, and I'm Justin. Let me find
- 29:18Speaker 1: us on the web at tech talk radio dot com.
- 29:20Speaker 3: We'll be right back.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Now back to tech talk Radio. So before the break,
- 29:25Speaker 2: we were talking about Justin's laptop woes. Yeah, and when
- 29:28Speaker 2: you mentioned the I nine processor thirteenth gen, I really
- 29:33Speaker 2: keyed into Hey, twenty twenty four. Intel when they released
- 29:37Speaker 2: the I thirteen or the I nine thirteen and then
- 29:40Speaker 2: the I nine fourteen generations, they had a pretty significant
- 29:44Speaker 2: issue with those processes.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Was it twenty twenty four or twenty twenty three? I
- 29:49Speaker 1: think it might have been twenty twenty four.
- 29:50Speaker 3: It was well, okay, see okay, But to think about
- 29:54Speaker 3: the one when I bought it, it was twenty twenty gosh,
- 29:59Speaker 3: I want to say it was twenty twenty three, late
- 30:01Speaker 3: twenty twenty three, but it was definitely an I nine
- 30:04Speaker 3: thirteenth gen.
- 30:05Speaker 2: So they identified, so you're you're probably right. So they
- 30:09Speaker 2: identified the problem mid August of twenty twenty four, so
- 30:14Speaker 2: likely it affected probably early I thirteen curls.
- 30:19Speaker 3: It could also be because of all the different Windows updates,
- 30:22Speaker 3: some with Windows might have also done something to it.
- 30:25Speaker 3: But yeah, go ahead, So this is.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Not a Windows issue. This is an Intel CPU issue.
- 30:30Speaker 3: Okay.
- 30:31Speaker 2: So the TLDR on this is that there's an instability
- 30:36Speaker 2: on the Intel I nine, thirteen and fourteen gendesktops CPUs
- 30:40Speaker 2: that stemmed from microcode bugs causing excessive voltage and permanent
- 30:44Speaker 2: chip degradation. So basically, the code that runs on the
- 30:47Speaker 2: chip itself handling voltage regulation was failing, literally burning up
- 30:52Speaker 2: the CPUs. So it issued a series of fixes via
- 30:57Speaker 2: bios updates to basically updates to basically cap the voltage
- 31:03Speaker 2: and protect some of the unaffected chips.
- 31:05Speaker 1: But you didn't do a BIOS update on it.
- 31:06Speaker 3: No, No, I have looked and looked and looked. I
- 31:09Speaker 3: have done I have I have. I have done Driver Easy,
- 31:13Speaker 3: which I again I've I've talked about Driver Easy many
- 31:15Speaker 3: many times on this show. It's an amazing program. I
- 31:18Speaker 3: have done Driver Easy. I have gone to a Sus' website,
- 31:23Speaker 3: there is absolutely no bios updates since from since June
- 31:27Speaker 3: of twenty twenty three.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Wow, that seems kind of strange.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Nothing. Yeah, so it says too up to the fix.
- 31:36Speaker 2: It says the fix. It's not a fix. It says
- 31:39Speaker 2: stop to your bios and then used all the default
- 31:42Speaker 2: said it. All the default pastas are settings on your
- 31:45Speaker 2: bios and if you're still seeing crashes are man because
- 31:50Speaker 2: they extended the warranty for the nines.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Wait wait, hold on, they extended the warranty. Yes, okay,
- 31:56Speaker 3: because I tried.
- 31:57Speaker 1: To actually go to a Seus's website and type in
- 31:59Speaker 1: my serial number and it said it was not under
- 32:01Speaker 1: warranty anymore. Uh, that's interesting because it should be.
- 32:06Speaker 2: I'm Intel expanded as warranty in August of twenty twenty four,
- 32:09Speaker 2: adding two extra years onto affected retail and O coreines
- 32:13Speaker 2: I seventh and some I five Raptor Lak models including
- 32:16Speaker 2: k KF, ks F and non K variants.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Oh man, I don't know how to resolve this. Then.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm holding on to my Lenovo hoping maybe I
- 32:25Speaker 1: can find a fix for that.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Well that I'm holding onto this too. I mean, I
- 32:28Speaker 3: was literally about to give it to my intern and say, here,
- 32:31Speaker 3: take it apart and see what you can learn about
- 32:32Speaker 3: a PC. But I don't. I don't want to do
- 32:35Speaker 3: that because it's such an expensive PC.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Or I could sell mine and just say it just
- 32:38Speaker 1: unplugged the sea mus, unplug the battery, plug it in
- 32:41Speaker 1: at work.
- 32:42Speaker 3: It's ridiculous.
- 32:43Speaker 2: But now now both both machines you guys are talking
- 32:45Speaker 2: about are running the iines.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Yeah, mine's the I seven So yeah, so it's the
- 32:50Speaker 1: thirteen and fourteenth gen, right, so it could be an
- 32:53Speaker 1: I seven thirteen gen.
- 32:54Speaker 3: I think it istant.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so I would look into seeing if maybe reaching
- 32:59Speaker 2: out to tell specifically and not.
- 33:01Speaker 1: A sus oh that's right, justin see Andy, this is
- 33:05Speaker 1: why I told you we should bring Sean on the
- 33:06Speaker 1: show specifically somebody else might be listening to this that
- 33:11Speaker 1: has gone through this, and yeah, because Sean is like
- 33:14Speaker 1: Sean is like that guy.
- 33:15Speaker 3: He's like James Bond's cue, like he's the guy that
- 33:19Speaker 3: does all the research in the bank. We can't figure
- 33:22Speaker 3: it out. He's like, oh, yeah, here's your problem, Sean.
- 33:23Speaker 3: You're gonna have to do.
- 33:24Speaker 2: So that's a blessing in disguise. Because it's painstaking for
- 33:28Speaker 2: me to buy anything.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, oh yeah, because I have to do.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Like thirty review checks.
- 33:34Speaker 3: I want to get in asking you, Sean before I
- 33:37Speaker 3: buy anything. I'd be like, hey, what do you think
- 33:38Speaker 3: about this? Yeah?
- 33:40Speaker 2: I just love technology, man.
- 33:42Speaker 1: I was just gonna say, Sean has to do the
- 33:44Speaker 1: show from now on in a British accent, though, just like.
- 33:46Speaker 5: You can you just give us an example of what
- 33:51Speaker 5: your British Come on, we gotta hear it, we gotta
- 33:54Speaker 5: hear it, just once, just to jolly good, jolly good.
- 34:00Speaker 1: I'm a real brit so I can. I can listen
- 34:02Speaker 1: and I might.
- 34:04Speaker 2: I might get a no doc and be gone.
- 34:07Speaker 1: And if I do that, even if you're doing is this?
- 34:12Speaker 1: Uh what is it that? Michael Caine?
- 34:15Speaker 3: But maybe I'm just like, can you do it? Michael King?
- 34:18Speaker 3: And Andy?
- 34:19Speaker 1: Uh? No, I can't. I can do an Assie, that's
- 34:21Speaker 1: about it. Like the tech technology, don't. It takes me
- 34:29Speaker 1: a while to get into it.
- 34:30Speaker 3: You know. I can actually do an Aussie too, can
- 34:33Speaker 3: you really? I can do it? Hold on, let me
- 34:35Speaker 3: let me travel.
- 34:37Speaker 2: You guys go into on here.
- 34:39Speaker 3: Just I just we do that.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Respect for Ozzy. A lot of you were you at
- 34:47Speaker 1: the station when Ozzie came in two thousand and one,
- 34:50Speaker 1: because you were working with us back then.
- 34:52Speaker 3: Yes, of course I was. So.
- 34:54Speaker 1: I don't know if you saw him, but it was
- 34:57Speaker 1: pretty cool. Yeah, yeah, it came amazing came to this,
- 35:00Speaker 1: but yes, rest in peace.
- 35:02Speaker 2: So reach out to Intel.
- 35:03Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, okay, reach out. Thanks for getting back on
- 35:05Speaker 3: track there, Sean. And wait, so wa are you talking about?
- 35:09Speaker 3: Should we literally reach out to Intel or the manufacturer
- 35:13Speaker 3: of the laptop? I think Intel? First, Well, how how
- 35:17Speaker 3: could Intel? I mean, what's Intel gonna do. Intel's gonna
- 35:20Speaker 3: be like, well, you got to reach out to your manufacturer.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's probably He's right, an Intel problem. Well okay,
- 35:26Speaker 1: but but they're not gonna literally like, are they gonna
- 35:28Speaker 1: take my laptop back and put it with a different Intel.
- 35:32Speaker 2: There's a serial number on your ZPU, take it out,
- 35:35Speaker 2: take the serial number and take it to Intel and
- 35:37Speaker 2: say I'm having this issue, Yeah.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Fix it. Here's an interesting thing too. And one other
- 35:44Speaker 1: thing I would mention justin is do a search for
- 35:48Speaker 1: a class action lawsuit just to see if anybody else
- 35:51Speaker 1: has had the same issue. Uh, this happened to me
- 35:54Speaker 1: just a few weeks ago, I had a customer bring
- 35:58Speaker 1: me a laptop that they said, can you put you know,
- 36:01Speaker 1: Windows ten on it? And it had Windows seven and
- 36:05Speaker 1: I said, yeah, let me let me take a look
- 36:07Speaker 1: at it. I went off to I found a license
- 36:10Speaker 1: for Windows ten on stack Social. It was cheap and
- 36:15Speaker 1: I think it went through a group on or whatever
- 36:17Speaker 1: whatever it was. I think it was eleven bucks. Right,
- 36:20Speaker 1: it's a lot better than paying one hundred and seven dollars.
- 36:22Speaker 1: So I got that, got that installed. Everything was fine.
- 36:25Speaker 1: One of the things. The other thing you wanted was
- 36:26Speaker 1: the hinge fixed. So on this Tashiba six fifty five,
- 36:30Speaker 1: you'd go to open the laptop and it'd be fine,
- 36:33Speaker 1: but then you go to close it and the whole
- 36:35Speaker 1: back right started lifting up, and then you have to
- 36:38Speaker 1: snap it down. So I went in and I took
- 36:42Speaker 1: it apart to look at it, and the plastic that
- 36:45Speaker 1: was holding the little screws in place that hold the
- 36:49Speaker 1: mounts for the hinge where they were shattered. They're completely broken.
- 36:54Speaker 1: And I'm like, this is just awful. You know, I'm
- 36:56Speaker 1: gonna there's no way to fix this. I thought, try
- 36:58Speaker 1: it a little monster here, you know, glue or gorilla glue. No,
- 37:02Speaker 1: that's not going to work. So I ended up going
- 37:05Speaker 1: online and I got lucky. I found a laptop the
- 37:09Speaker 1: same brand, same year, the whole bit, for twenty dollars
- 37:15Speaker 1: and this is on eBay, and I said I'll take
- 37:17Speaker 1: a chance, so I bought it. I paid maybe twenty
- 37:21Speaker 1: dollars for shipping as well, and I get this laptop
- 37:24Speaker 1: in open. I opened it up and the Hinge system
- 37:28Speaker 1: completely different it. The Hinge system had a metal plate
- 37:31Speaker 1: on it that held everything in place so it wouldn't snap.
- 37:35Speaker 1: And I thought, this is pretty amazing, this is cool.
- 37:38Speaker 1: So I ended up changing out everything, you know. I
- 37:41Speaker 1: had to take motherboard out, the whole bit and got
- 37:43Speaker 1: it into this case and now perfect with the hinges
- 37:46Speaker 1: the whole bit. But while I was doing the research
- 37:48Speaker 1: for this, I found out it was a class action
- 37:52Speaker 1: lawsuit against to Shiba for this Hinge system that was
- 37:56Speaker 1: breaking on everybody that was opening and closing their laptops.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Really, but it was too.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Late because it had already been satisfied that you know,
- 38:04Speaker 1: with the courts. It was too late to try and
- 38:06Speaker 1: file and claim just other people. This luck luckily, this
- 38:10Speaker 1: this laptop I k got in didn't have that issue.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Matter of fact, I think it came out after this model,
- 38:16Speaker 1: this guy's model, so they had fixed it and I
- 38:19Speaker 1: just got lucky there.
- 38:20Speaker 3: But interesting, Yeah, I'll double I'll I'll check into that. Yeah,
- 38:24Speaker 3: I mean, I just I think the problem also is
- 38:28Speaker 3: like a SU's customer support is pretty much non existent.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Everything is that way, now, don't you think customer support
- 38:38Speaker 1: It's hard to get in touch with anybody, and if
- 38:40Speaker 1: you do.
- 38:41Speaker 3: It's it's it's just AI. Yeah. It's like usually you're
- 38:44Speaker 3: like you're talking to some like it's like, Hi, I'm Greg,
- 38:48Speaker 3: how can I help you today? And I'm like, Greg,
- 38:50Speaker 3: are you an AI? And it's like, yes, I'm an
- 38:52Speaker 3: AI and I'm here to assist you. I'm like, put
- 38:54Speaker 3: me in touch with a real person. Yeah, I'm sorry, Dave,
- 38:58Speaker 3: I cannot do that.
- 39:01Speaker 1: That's your two thousand and one voice. Yeah, yeah, no,
- 39:04Speaker 1: it's it's frustrating. But I was thinking about this. I
- 39:08Speaker 1: was just thinking about this the other day. I'm restarting
- 39:10Speaker 1: my design business, my service business, going a little more
- 39:14Speaker 1: forward with it, and I just I get so much
- 39:17Speaker 1: spam calls and their local spam calls. Now I must
- 39:22Speaker 1: say I am on Exfinity. A lot of the information
- 39:25Speaker 1: Exfinity had a big hack. A lot of that got
- 39:28Speaker 1: out there that had my home residents, that had my
- 39:30Speaker 1: phone number, my name, business, the whole bit, and that's
- 39:35Speaker 1: how they got the information. So I'm thinking it's time
- 39:37Speaker 1: to change the phone numbers and time to change emails
- 39:41Speaker 1: and just start over and see hopefully I won't get
- 39:43Speaker 1: somebody else, because businesses have to deal with that now.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Spam calls to the front desk, you know, what do
- 39:49Speaker 1: you do? There Is there any service that will block them,
- 39:53Speaker 1: you know? Or do you just offshoot them to an
- 39:56Speaker 1: AI service that will answer your call for you?
- 39:59Speaker 3: Well, okay, a couple a couple quick thoughts about this.
- 40:01Speaker 3: I actually subscribe to a daily newsletter that comes into
- 40:05Speaker 3: my inbox every day. It's Roca News. And this might
- 40:09Speaker 3: be like the website of the week. I don't know.
- 40:10Speaker 3: We'll talk about it later. But one of their common
- 40:12Speaker 3: advertisers is Incognito, and they always talk about Incognito. You know,
- 40:17Speaker 3: you sign up with them, it's like, I don't know,
- 40:20Speaker 3: thirty bucks a year or something like that. I don't
- 40:21Speaker 3: know exactly, but they promised to like remove your information
- 40:25Speaker 3: from the Internet.
- 40:27Speaker 1: As best as they can, especially the dark web. Oh
- 40:29Speaker 1: and they claim that they.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Can reduce spam call spam emails by ninety percent, So
- 40:35Speaker 3: that's kind of interesting.
- 40:36Speaker 1: So that's pretty vague.
- 40:38Speaker 3: Well, yeah, it's a bold claim, but it might be
- 40:42Speaker 3: something to look into. Incognito is one of those websites
- 40:45Speaker 3: that that might might help you out.
- 40:47Speaker 1: All right, we had to take another quick break. You
- 40:49Speaker 1: want to talk a little bit about AI as well.
- 40:51Speaker 1: I know we have a listener question as well and
- 40:53Speaker 1: a comment on our website that it's got a lot
- 40:56Speaker 1: of people upset, So we'll do that when we come back.
- 40:58Speaker 3: I'm Andy Taylor, I'm sir, and I'm justin. Let me
- 41:01Speaker 3: send us an X at tech talk Radio. As long
- 41:05Speaker 3: as you're not spam we'll be right back. And now
- 41:09Speaker 3: back to tech Talk Radio. So we were talking a
- 41:13Speaker 3: little bit about AI in the past here past couple
- 41:17Speaker 3: of segments. I recently read an article that talked about
- 41:21Speaker 3: the top jobs that would be affected by AI top
- 41:29Speaker 3: I think it was top twenty five jobs be affected
- 41:31Speaker 3: by AI and the top twenty five jobs that would
- 41:33Speaker 3: not be affected by AI. Really okay, and I want
- 41:37Speaker 3: to ask you Andy first, Yeah, what industry do you
- 41:42Speaker 3: think would be affected the most by AI? And what
- 41:46Speaker 3: would you think we affected the least? And I'm going
- 41:49Speaker 3: to ask Sean the same question.
- 41:50Speaker 1: Well, the most by AI would be like a online
- 41:56Speaker 1: like publication, you know, all of the stuff. Journal list, Yeah, journalist.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Uh.
- 42:02Speaker 1: I know that radio has been affected by it. You know,
- 42:05Speaker 1: that has been one of the things as far as
- 42:08Speaker 1: the least medical profession anything in the world of medical
- 42:13Speaker 1: you can't have, you know, AI doing a diagnosis for you.
- 42:17Speaker 1: So that would be one that I don't think would
- 42:19Speaker 1: be touched.
- 42:19Speaker 3: How about you, Sean, Yeah, copywriting journalism for the first Okay, Yeah,
- 42:24Speaker 3: I think that by far, hands down.
- 42:26Speaker 2: It's that's that's somebody's job was to pull the wires.
- 42:30Speaker 2: And I worked in justin you know, you worked in news,
- 42:33Speaker 2: and Andy you worked in radio, kind of same thing.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Somebody's job was to read the wires and write copy
- 42:37Speaker 2: and put it on the website.
- 42:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Now it's just all a I generated. It just reads
- 42:42Speaker 2: the wire and it spits out a copy that's got
- 42:46Speaker 2: a little bit of flavor for the local station, and it's
- 42:48Speaker 2: done Ye transcribing, so anybody that's anybody's transcription Live captioning
- 42:56Speaker 2: M or how about least least trucking.
- 43:00Speaker 1: Okay, physical physical, I mean, I know that it's coming
- 43:06Speaker 1: with down the road, but it's down down there.
- 43:11Speaker 2: But that's there's so much more regulation in the auto
- 43:14Speaker 2: industry for AI then, But I think the more physical
- 43:20Speaker 2: like physical goods moving and physical goods shipping, logistics, Like
- 43:24Speaker 2: there's AI involved, right, but people still have to move
- 43:28Speaker 2: the content from place to place. So shipping and logistics
- 43:33Speaker 2: in the physical portion of it. Not the logistics side
- 43:38Speaker 2: of it, the planning in the the freight and the
- 43:41Speaker 2: calculations and the that mileage and the fuel and like
- 43:44Speaker 2: that's all gonna get taken over a hands down, but
- 43:47Speaker 2: the actual like driving of the vehicles.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I don't know they're talking about AI driving vehicle.
- 43:51Speaker 3: So okay, okay, let's let me interject here, let me interject. Okay,
- 43:54Speaker 3: So Andy, what did you say was the most It
- 43:57Speaker 3: was just journalist journalism online. You also said journalism, okay,
- 44:01Speaker 3: so that was definitely on the list of the most affected.
- 44:04Speaker 3: It was like the I think it was like the fifteenth.
- 44:06Speaker 3: I don't have the list in front of me right now.
- 44:08Speaker 3: It was like the fifteenth most affected. The other ones
- 44:11Speaker 3: that were affected were basically all of the top college
- 44:16Speaker 3: degree jobs whoa anything that had a college degree was
- 44:22Speaker 3: going to be affected by AI, including computer programming, including
- 44:26Speaker 3: you know, banking, including just basically any If you look
- 44:31Speaker 3: down the list, it was pretty much anything with a
- 44:33Speaker 3: college degree. Now you said least least affected by it, Sean,
- 44:40Speaker 3: you mentioned trucking. Trucking was actually on the list of
- 44:44Speaker 3: the most affected because of AI cars like like self
- 44:48Speaker 3: driving trucks.
- 44:49Speaker 1: They've been doing the test on the list test in
- 44:51Speaker 1: Phoenix with these these trucks that eighteen wheelers there. So
- 44:55Speaker 1: that that right there is is on the list of
- 44:57Speaker 1: most affected.
- 44:58Speaker 3: The least affect did jobs that, according according to this
- 45:03Speaker 3: one particular study. Okay, I'm not saying this is all
- 45:05Speaker 3: you know, set in stone trade jobs, plumbing, electricians, hvac,
- 45:15Speaker 3: anything that requires hands on these were the least affected jobs.
- 45:21Speaker 3: Now this is kind of interesting because you know, we
- 45:24Speaker 3: talk about people like you know, kids growing up. They're like,
- 45:28Speaker 3: oh my god, you've got to go to college. You
- 45:29Speaker 3: got to get a degree, you got to be successful
- 45:31Speaker 3: in the world. You got to get a degree. But
- 45:33Speaker 3: there's so many people out there that are like, no,
- 45:35Speaker 3: you don't necessarily have to get a degree. You need
- 45:38Speaker 3: to get a trade. Go go study a trade, Go
- 45:40Speaker 3: go be an electrician, Go be a plumber, Go go
- 45:44Speaker 3: do this. And I know these people like these are like,
- 45:46Speaker 3: these are not office jobs. These are not regarded in
- 45:50Speaker 3: today's society as being the most prestigious jobs. But I'll
- 45:55Speaker 3: tell you right now, these are the jobs that are
- 45:57Speaker 3: not going to be affected by AI regard list of
- 46:00Speaker 3: what AI ends up turning out to be. These are
- 46:03Speaker 3: the jobs that are still going to require human hands
- 46:06Speaker 3: to do this, and trade skills are just becoming more
- 46:11Speaker 3: and more prevalent in today's society versus going to college,
- 46:16Speaker 3: getting a four year degree, coming out and then finding
- 46:20Speaker 3: no jobs.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's kind of Oh, that's that's scary, especial spending
- 46:25Speaker 1: all that money for the education and then find out there's.
- 46:27Speaker 3: No That's why I'm not I'm not pushing for Eric,
- 46:29Speaker 3: my son. You know, he's eight and a half years old.
- 46:32Speaker 3: I'm not pushing for him to go to college. Now.
- 46:34Speaker 3: We're not We're not at the point where I'm talking
- 46:36Speaker 3: about him going to trade school. I mean, he doesn't
- 46:38Speaker 3: even know about what that means. Yeah, but I'm I'm
- 46:41Speaker 3: gonna tell him. Look, man, there's other options out there
- 46:44Speaker 3: besides just college, like especially when it comes to the
- 46:47Speaker 3: world of AI, if AI is going to take over journalism,
- 46:50Speaker 3: which was very high on the list. Let me try
- 46:53Speaker 3: to think of other ones that are out there. Medical
- 46:56Speaker 3: medical was even on the list of most related. Yes,
- 46:59Speaker 3: medical medical assistant was on the list of being the
- 47:03Speaker 3: most effective because doctors are turning to AI to help
- 47:08Speaker 3: diagnose certain ailments.
- 47:12Speaker 1: I like how some medical offices are using technology like tablets.
- 47:16Speaker 1: You know, you go in, you're giving a tablet, and
- 47:19Speaker 1: then you enter your information onto that tablet, and it
- 47:23Speaker 1: is sort of the same way, you know, but it
- 47:25Speaker 1: number one reduces the paperwork load and number two makes
- 47:29Speaker 1: it faster for you to be processed. But will they
- 47:32Speaker 1: eventually get rid of those people that are checking you
- 47:35Speaker 1: in when you go to the hospital, whether you're having
- 47:37Speaker 1: a baby or having heart surgery.
- 47:40Speaker 2: I have a.
- 47:41Speaker 3: Bone to pick with that, and I think our listeners
- 47:43Speaker 3: will too. Every time I go to the doctor's office,
- 47:47Speaker 3: they asked me before I come in, they asked me
- 47:50Speaker 3: fill out this online questionnaire. Right, I type my name,
- 47:54Speaker 3: my social Security number, I type in all my ailments.
- 47:58Speaker 3: I type in do I have you know all these
- 48:01Speaker 3: different diseases. No, no, no, no, no no no. Right.
- 48:04Speaker 3: I get to the office, They're like, okay, now you
- 48:07Speaker 3: need to check in. They give me another tablet asking
- 48:10Speaker 3: me the same damn thing.
- 48:13Speaker 1: Yes, and then I get into the waiting room and
- 48:16Speaker 1: the doctor comes in and.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Ask me the same damn questions.
- 48:23Speaker 1: You are one hundred percent correct, correct, so stupid. Sorry,
- 48:29Speaker 1: there is a there is a certain amount of redundancy
- 48:31Speaker 1: while trying to be the Department of repump department, the
- 48:35Speaker 1: Department of Redundancy department.
- 48:37Speaker 3: Damn it.
- 48:41Speaker 1: All right, we gotta take a break.
- 48:43Speaker 3: That was good.
- 48:44Speaker 1: We'll come back with more of tech Talk Radio. Uh,
- 48:47Speaker 1: you have a website of the week. We got a
- 48:49Speaker 1: listener question and if we can get this in, but
- 48:51Speaker 1: we're gonna try with more of that. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 48:54Speaker 1: I'm Seanda Weird, and I'm justin Lemmy and I'm mad.
- 48:58Speaker 3: We'll be right back and factor tech Talk Radio.
- 49:02Speaker 1: One of the things I love working with these guys
- 49:03Speaker 1: is I can say something in all seriousness and it
- 49:07Speaker 1: can be misconstrued. It could be thrown because we were
- 49:10Speaker 1: talking here. What should we talk about here for this
- 49:12Speaker 1: next segment? Things that are important I thought you don't.
- 49:16Speaker 1: When we're in the summer months like we are and
- 49:18Speaker 1: it gets really hot, we need to talk about your technology.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Your computer's in heat. And of course Justin had the
- 49:26Speaker 1: question that just just works it out perfectly.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Are you talking about like, wait, are we talking about
- 49:33Speaker 3: computers and heat like they're gonna reproduce or are we
- 49:36Speaker 3: talking about.
- 49:37Speaker 2: When two computers love each other.
- 49:40Speaker 3: They're just gonna come together to have a little baby computer.
- 49:43Speaker 2: But make sure you have a proper antivirus.
- 49:50Speaker 3: Protection, folks.
- 49:51Speaker 1: And that, kids, is where flash drives come from.
- 49:56Speaker 3: The USB can only go in one way, all right.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Seriously, though, when it comes to your computers and heat,
- 50:06Speaker 1: you got to be careful. Don't leave them in your car, remember.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Now, any any technology. Heat is the killer of most technology, right,
- 50:14Speaker 2: That's why there's fans, that's why. Yeah, and obviously you're going,
- 50:18Speaker 2: you know, and we don't have this problem.
- 50:21Speaker 1: But you ever grab your smartphone and it's it like
- 50:23Speaker 1: tells you it's got warning where you know it's overheated,
- 50:26Speaker 1: and it was just sitting on the like on this
- 50:29Speaker 1: on the you know charging plate that's that you drive with,
- 50:33Speaker 1: so it's your hands free and it can heat up
- 50:36Speaker 1: just being in the car.
- 50:37Speaker 3: Well, yes, truthfully, yes, but we also don't live in
- 50:40Speaker 3: Arizona where it's one hundred and fifty thousand degrees. True.
- 50:44Speaker 1: Well, you still have to worry about that, don't you.
- 50:46Speaker 1: I mean, the sun isn't in Colorado.
- 50:48Speaker 2: You know my car gets hot enough to worry about.
- 50:51Speaker 2: I mean I've ruined at least one dash cam having
- 50:54Speaker 2: it mounted in the windshield all the time. And then
- 50:56Speaker 2: lens is a focal point and it focuses the sun
- 50:59Speaker 2: so it can mount the internals that can destroy cameras.
- 51:02Speaker 3: So you know what, I think I have the name
- 51:04Speaker 3: of the show.
- 51:04Speaker 1: All right, what is the name of the show?
- 51:06Speaker 3: This week's show Computers Love each Other? There you go.
- 51:12Speaker 3: I think that works all right.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Quick website of the week? Anybody got one?
- 51:16Speaker 3: I do. It's called incogny and I was ok about earlier,
- 51:20Speaker 3: so it's I n coog ni and cogni dot com.
- 51:27Speaker 3: It claims to be able to protect you from identity theft,
- 51:30Speaker 3: from spam, from online stocking, from doxing, digital redlining, spam calls. Okay,
- 51:38Speaker 3: the website actually just keeps repeating itself. Here, I'm just
- 51:41Speaker 3: reading off the website. It's a great website. So it's
- 51:44Speaker 3: a thirty day money back guarantee. It's been talked about
- 51:47Speaker 3: on tech Radar, cyber News, PC Gamer, nord VPN, shurp Shark.
- 51:51Speaker 3: It's a really good website and it kind of promises
- 51:54Speaker 3: to kind of just take your information off of the
- 51:56Speaker 3: web so you're not as susceptible to all of these
- 52:01Speaker 3: you know, these these fake people that are calling we're
- 52:04Speaker 3: spamming you or whatever.
- 52:05Speaker 1: I'd love to see comparison between LifeLock and Incognitiate and LifeLock.
- 52:10Speaker 3: I LifeLock, I don't.
- 52:12Speaker 2: My My one question is say I say I pay
- 52:15Speaker 2: for one year, right, they wipe my data? What happens
- 52:18Speaker 2: if I don't renew it that one year?
- 52:20Speaker 3: They put it back?
- 52:20Speaker 2: I don't.
- 52:23Speaker 3: They're like, wow, I guess we have all your data here.
- 52:25Speaker 3: You better pay us. We're going to put it back. No,
- 52:27Speaker 3: I think. I think honestly, what it is is they
- 52:29Speaker 3: remove it and then if you don't renew it, they're
- 52:32Speaker 3: not going to keep looking for your data. They're just
- 52:34Speaker 3: your data is going to naturally reappear on these websites
- 52:38Speaker 3: as you continue your life. So if you keep paying
- 52:41Speaker 3: for that, they're going to keep going out finding your
- 52:44Speaker 3: data and removing it from the web, the dark web,
- 52:47Speaker 3: from all these data brokers. Things like that, so stocking, doxing, swatting, discrimination,
- 52:52Speaker 3: physical harm, black mare, extortion, spam, email, spam calls, digital redlining, fishing,
- 52:58Speaker 3: things fishing. They're gonna get rid of it all, that's
- 53:01Speaker 3: what they claim. There's a thirty day money back guarantee
- 53:04Speaker 3: you can go in Cogni dot com.
- 53:06Speaker 1: All right, sounds good when two computers love each other.
- 53:09Speaker 1: The theme for the show. Thank you so much for
- 53:12Speaker 1: joining in. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Shonda Weird.
- 53:14Speaker 3: And I'm Justin. Let me find us on the web
- 53:16Speaker 3: at tech talk radio dot com. Have yourselves great week.
- 53:19Speaker 3: We'll see you next time.
