- 3:58A four three. And it's a Sunday night, so that means I have
- 4:02a bonus show, so we know August is coming, and that means we
- 4:10get to return dour beautiful kids to their second parents, which are the teachers
- 4:15of principal the administratives. And first we want to say thank you for keeping
- 4:21an eye on our little people. But hey, you guys, we as
- 4:26parents have to do our part. So tonight's show is about getting these kids
- 4:30back and ready for school. Okay. So tonight I'm just gonna give you
- 4:36some parental trip tips, okay, and these are going to be tips about
- 4:42appropriate bedtimes. I picked my three favorite African American parenting websites. Yes,
- 4:50it's okay to be on a parenting website because we do not know it at
- 4:58all, and especially me and my generation. You know, the elders are
- 5:03kind of leaving us earth, and you know some of us didn't take all
- 5:06the notes that we were supposed to get. So join me as I have
- 5:11this shot slyeshow talking about back to school? Okay, so everybody knows back
- 5:25to school right, our next slide back to school. Some kids wear uniforms,
- 5:30come kids do not wear uniforms. There are some schools that have free
- 5:34lunches. There are some schools that do not have free lunches. But it's
- 5:39up to us experients to prepare our students for the next school year. Every
- 5:45school year is different. You want to have a routine, you might have
- 5:47to tweak it every year. But my next slide is going to give you
- 5:51some more information on those parental prep tops. Okay, first, you guys,
- 5:59please say that realistic goal for our kids, break the big goals down
- 6:04to smaller steps and be ready to adjust them and compromise. Now, speaking
- 6:10as a parent, my daughter hates to go to bed on time. It's
- 6:15always an argument. So now we have it two weeks of back to school
- 6:19and we're back in school. So I gave her this option. I will
- 6:26let you go to bed at nine thirty. But if any moment you get
- 6:31up to go to camp and you say five more minutes, that means your
- 6:36bedtime needs to be nine o'clock. So gad breaks down that bigger goal of
- 6:42getting her to bed on time to a smaller goal that she can achieve.
- 6:46Okay. The next tip is poritize self care, reduce to stress, and
- 6:54stay motivated by getting enough sleep, eating well, and staying actives. Don't
- 7:00start arguments first thing in the morning. Get the kids things out at night,
- 7:10give them a sense of priority, a sense of chores. Okay,
- 7:15we have Sunday. That means we get all of our clothes out for her
- 7:18week, and if you stack them in certain places, they can grab that
- 7:23and prepare theirself through the day. For me and my daughter, also,
- 7:27we have now turned away from watching the news and really watching the news for
- 7:33a timer, but we put on affirmation and music, so I let her
- 7:40make her morning playlist. One of her favorite songs right now is Big God.
- 7:46Now, yes, she's dancing and everything, but I do remind her.
- 7:50Okay, remember we're on a time schedule. Okay. That leads us
- 7:55into our next tip, which established routine routines help kids feel secure and behave
- 8:03better. A bedtime routine can signal to your brain that it's time to sleep,
- 8:09improving your sleep quality routine first thing in the morning. You say your
- 8:13prayer, you make your bed, you brush your teeth, you wash your
- 8:18face, you wash off, You put those things that are done on a
- 8:22normal basis. That helps out everyone in the household. That eliminates the arguments.
- 8:30Now, will it go smoothie all the time? Nope, surely want
- 8:37but nine times out of ten it's gonna go smoothly. Now, there are
- 8:41gonna be days where is something big going on, Like my daughter, they
- 8:46have school where you have to do your funny box socks, wear your hair
- 8:52this way. Those are also things you can prepare the night before. Okay,
- 8:56Now, this is one of my baddest tips for one of the baddest
- 9:03things I do, and this is a tip that I am trying to do
- 9:07this year, and like you guys literally trying to do this year because your
- 9:13girl has invested in the organizer. So we'll see how well this goes.
- 9:18The next tip says stay organized, use a shared family calendar for everyone's schedules,
- 9:24and make a daily morning to do list. The morning to do list
- 9:30is just like your regular morning routine. The schedule is something that if you
- 9:35have a child that's involved in a lot of activities like I do. My
- 9:41child goes from dance to church dance. Now she's gonna be doing in another
- 9:48dance, so that's three dance companies, not talking about other little things that
- 9:52she might be involved in going to this outreach, of going to this friends
- 9:58party, but having the those things written down and having a schedule does alleviate
- 10:03any confusion. Another example, my sister has three boys all I'm play football.
- 10:15My hat school goes off that my sister's so good because I have one
- 10:20nephew on this field, I have another nephew on this field, and I
- 10:24have another nephew sitting understand because his team isn't playing, and she keeps it
- 10:28all they have a routine schedule, so stay organized. Get that routine.
- 10:37Another thing, encourage independence. Teach your children to take responsibility and work on
- 10:43their own, which helped them succeed in school. Okay, my daughter is
- 10:48now, we're doing spelling words. Yes, school starts in two eads,
- 10:52but I want to go ahead and get her in the routine of doing this
- 10:56independently so she knows, Hey, I got two words wrong. I said,
- 11:01Okay, what do you do with those words that you got wrong?
- 11:05And that means I have to write my sentences and I have to write the
- 11:09word five times each. It's a routine. And encourage the independence because she
- 11:13already knows what she needs to do. And the biggest of them all parents,
- 11:18let's limit the screen time. And the screen time doesn't mean just on
- 11:22tablet, it doesn't mean just on your phone, but it also means TV
- 11:28too. Let's cut all this down. My daughter gets thirty minutes once school
- 11:31start. Thirty minutes, that's all you get. What you're gonna do with
- 11:35the rest of your time read a book. That's another thirty minutes that you
- 11:39will do during the day, draw, play around in your room. But
- 11:46let's cut down some of the screen time. Okay, so everybody's talking about
- 11:52bed time, So our next slide is going to show you what are the
- 11:56appropriate bad times that you need for kids. Yes I have the four to
- 12:01six months, and yes I do, but this is just a short listing
- 12:07of those times. Okay, you guys. For kids my daughter's ages,
- 12:11it's nine, they need about eight to twelve hours of sleep. Now,
- 12:16these times do change the older that they get. Now, if you're someone
- 12:22between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, you should get at least eight hours
- 12:28of sleep. And I'm gonna say this, when you start to go through
- 12:31puberty fourteens, it's hard to tell your body it's time to go to bed
- 12:39at nine o'clock because your kicking in the second year. So appearents, just
- 12:45watch out for them. If you see in the morning they're going to bed
- 12:48at eleven o'clock, which is you know, okay, appropriate time for sixteen
- 12:52seventeen year old. But if you see them in the morning, you see
- 12:56them starting to become drowsy and stuff like that, then you might want to
- 13:00talk to them about adjusting their bed times. Also, this might not be
- 13:07conventional, but take those cell phones away. You should not be on the
- 13:15phone eleven twelve thirty one, two o'clock at night when you have school in
- 13:20the morning, you can do two things. Turn the Internet off in the
- 13:24household or get the phone. Okay, stop our next slide. This is
- 13:33my favorite, So of course I can't be sc book y'all eight four three
- 13:37and not show you the next slide that has the favorite back to school read
- 13:43alouds Okay, so I'm first back to school read aloud. It's called I
- 13:58Got the Spirit. This one is by Connie Chanspiel Morrison. Summer is over,
- 14:05and this little girl has got the school spirit. She hears the school
- 14:09spirit and the bus driving up the street, room room, and the bell
- 14:16sounding in the hall. She sings the school Spirit song in class with her
- 14:22friends. ABC one two three. You guys, this is the cutest book
- 14:28I've seen. The colorful art inside of the book, the making, the
- 14:33sounds that remind you of the city where you are, and those familiar sounds
- 14:37inside the classroom. Is a great short read for any kid that's going back
- 14:43to school. I Got the Spirit by Connie Chanpiel Morrison. Now our next
- 14:50side, it's called The Nosy class The Noisy Classroom It's a young girl who's
- 14:58a out the end of the third grade, but this year she's putting Missus
- 15:03Johnson's noisy class. Okay, everything about this noisy class is odd. Where
- 15:09all the other kids are quiet, Missus Johnson's things and the kids chatter all
- 15:15day. The door is always closed, but yet the sounds can be heard
- 15:18in the hallway. Will some are coming to an inn and school's starting.
- 15:24This girl realizes soon that she'll be going to the noisy class. What will
- 15:30school be like? Now? This one? You bring a girl into a
- 15:35situation where she's not really used to And the one thing about this book it
- 15:41helps you deal with your anxiety. And yes, kids do have anxiety.
- 15:46Matter of fact, that's my daughter's favorite character in Inside Out Too, which
- 15:52is anxiety. Okay, so you guys, we're gonna take a break real
- 15:58quick, and we got three more reads that we're going to bring to you
- 16:03so you can read to those kids, and some more tips and a surprise
- 16:07at the end. You guys, don't laugh at my surprise. But we're
- 16:10gonna take commercial and we'll be right back. Got sixty seconds. Take a
- 16:18mental health minute to learn about depression disorders they cause symptoms that affect how you
- 16:23feel, how you think, and how you handle daily life. Depression should
- 16:30be treated by health professionals. Don't try to handle it alone or treat it
- 16:37with alcohol or illegal drugs. Treatments include psychotherapy or talk therapy, medication,
- 16:45and sometimes brain stimulation therapy. These treatments may also be used in combination with
- 16:49one another. If you think you might have depression, talk to a trusted
- 16:53friend, family member, or health care provider. The earlier treatment begins,
- 17:00the more effective it is. Learn more about depression through the NIMH website and
- 17:06take sixty seconds to share this mental health minute to help someone else. Welcome
- 17:18back everyone. We're about to get to our next book, and it is
- 17:22called The King of Kindergarten. I know y'all see his crown right. You
- 17:26can't tell him anything, he is so ready. The King of Kindergarten is
- 17:33by Derek Barnes. The morning sun's blared through your window like a million brass
- 17:37trumpets. That's behind your head like a crown. Mommy says today, you're
- 17:45gonna be the King of Kindergarten. Starting kindergarten can be a big milestone.
- 17:52And the hero of this story is ready to make his mark. He's dressed
- 17:56himself, he's eating a pile of pancakes and can't wait to be a part
- 18:02of the whole kingdom of kids that they will be jam packed, but he's
- 18:07up to his own challenge, taking the new experiences and strive with his infectious
- 18:11enthusiasm, and afterword, he can't wait to tell his proud parents all about
- 18:18the achievement and then wake up to start another day. Now that is the
- 18:23best book I can see to read to any little young king that is going
- 18:29into kindergarten. I'm excited and ready to go to kindergarten and parents, you
- 18:33know, we can't wait for that first day for them to come back and
- 18:37tell us about all the friends they met, all the old friends they got
- 18:41back, about how they don't like school lunch and this and that, and
- 18:47just talk our ears off about their day. So, if you got a
- 18:52young king in your life, go ahead and grab this one. The King
- 18:55of Kindergarten by Derek Barnes. So, I know we got the King of
- 19:00Kindergarten, but what about the Queen. Here we go, you guys,
- 19:04put the little girls out there. The Queen of Kindergarten also by Derek Bards.
- 19:11MJ is more than ready for her first day of kindergarten. With the
- 19:15hair freshly braiden and his mom's special tr on her head. She's no,
- 19:21She's going to rock kindergarten. But Tiara isn't just for show. It also
- 19:26reminds her of that the good thing she's bringing to the classroom, stuff like
- 19:30her kindness, friendliness, and impressive soccer skills too. Like the King of
- 19:37Kindergarten, this is the perfect book to reinforce the back to school excitement and
- 19:41build the confidence in the newest of students. So, like I said,
- 19:45we had King of Kindergarten for the boys. Now we got the Queen of
- 19:49Kindergarten for the girls. Okay, here's our very last book, you guys.
- 19:56This one is called All with You, Always with Me. Now,
- 20:03if you have a kid who's not really excited about going back to school,
- 20:07this is their first time going to school, first time ever being separated from
- 20:12mommy, daddy, auntie, cousin, whatever. This is the perfect book.
- 20:19Grammy Award winning artists Kelly Rowling and her educator Jessica McKay have practiced a
- 20:26lyrical celebration on working moms everywhere and as soon as story for their children.
- 20:33As mom gets ready to go to work, first she works on the building
- 20:37in the world for her child. Because it can sometimes be hard to separate
- 20:41during the day, Mom collects some simple words and she and her child are
- 20:47repete whenever they are missing each other or feeling overwhelmed. Always with you,
- 20:53Always with me, mommy and child together will be this for any child needs
- 21:00a little reassurance or just to share a sweetish gesture of affection. Always with
- 21:07you, Always with Me is a loving tribute to families that honor the work
- 21:11the mother does both inside and outside the home. In the book, this
- 21:15young boy goes to work and mommy goes The young boy goes to school and
- 21:21mommy goes to work, and there is a big separation to the fact that
- 21:26Mommy has to one time come kids him. So she came up with this
- 21:30and this is the best way to reassure that child we're gonna get back together.
- 21:36You have to do your job, what's the education. And I have
- 21:40to do my job, which is to by five for you. Okay,
- 21:45So I told you guys, I got some more tips. Of course,
- 21:48you know I'm gonna talk to you about raising those readers. I can't help
- 21:52it. I wouldn't be sc book gal if I did not tell you how
- 21:56to readse the perfect reader or a decent reader. I have a lot of
- 22:00tips on here. Choose any one of them, try them all. Maybe
- 22:04do a little challenge for you and your child, and you try to check
- 22:08off your whole list. And if you do the whole entire list, guess
- 22:12what, you guys can get a big prize. But some of the things
- 22:15you can do to raise a reader is visit to library, ask questions,
- 22:22model reading. The child will do what you do. Okay, read together,
- 22:27access books, discuss what you read. So much more, okay,
- 22:33you guys. Also, here are some great websites for African American parents.
- 22:41Okay. I use a lot of these websites to give to my friends or
