- 0:01Welcome to authentic living with Roxanne, a place where we have as conversations about
- 0:08things that really matter in our lives.
- 0:11And now here's your host, Roxanne Derhodge.
- 0:36Our interview last week was so good that we decided to turn it into a 2 part series.
- 0:41If you missed last week, you'll find the link in the show notes.
- 0:45It's not mandatory that you listen, but we wanna make sure that you don't miss out on this
- 0:51amazing conversation.
- 0:53Hi, everyone.
- 0:54It's Roxanne Durgesh.
- 0:55Thanks for tuning in again this week.
- 0:57Today, I have a special colleague, Christian Envig, here with us.
- 1:01She's in Switzerland and she's gonna talk to us today about an amazing organization that she
- 1:07started 25 years ago.
- 1:11That's a Kristen, that's a long time to be dealing with women in leadership.
- 1:15So thanks for coming, coming on to have this call.
- 1:18With us today.
- 1:20So to have an objective lens, really, and and and to look at yourself and say, you know, what
- 1:26my strengths with my limitations What are what are the realities of this bureaucratic that I'm
- 1:32wanting to enter?
- 1:34It's really I I, you know, in my new book or war, I talk a little bit about, you know,
- 1:39assessing your own skills as an authentic heart leader.
- 1:43Rating.
- 1:44And we all, you know, as human beings, we love to look at our our our strengths, but we, you
- 1:48know, the I I believe the gift is in looking at your limitations and recognizing those things
- 1:54and figuring out, you know, what steps do I need?
- 1:58And then also who do I need to surround myself with in order to get these skills to?
- 2:04And sometimes there may be a male colleague.
- 2:06That's all.
- 2:07I know.
- 2:08It's also that.
- 2:09You know?
- 2:10And, there was also something else that came to mind just before, and that is that there's
- 2:16many, many, many women now who extremely well educated.
- 2:21So young women do all over the world, at least in countries where you get access to education
- 2:26and so on.
- 2:27They do well at school.
- 2:29They get good grades.
- 2:30We have higher and higher education.
- 2:32So and then we start working many women start working, and it's still about sort of doing the
- 2:38excellent job to get a good grade to and and we ought to be careful.
- 2:43So it's not too much about pleasing in the hope of being one day recognized for that good girl.
- 2:49So this is I mean, I'm telling that.
- 2:52I believe there's a lot of people I know.
- 2:53And then years later, you were, like, exhausted and burned out.
- 2:57And and So I don't know how to how to get the younger women to to to pick that up, but it's
- 3:02an important part of Yeah.
- 3:07This perfection and perfectionism.
- 3:09This being
- 3:10there's something.
- 3:11I think that, you know, the gen Zed and the gen xers are more coming from the space of value
- 3:16alignment.
- 3:17I could see that's, you know, a lot of female leaders at my time we were on that treadmill.
- 3:22Absolutely.
- 3:23Right?
- 3:24And but now I when I meet younger female leaders, they'll say, you know, when I go for
- 3:29situation or a a an interview, I'm looking for what where's that value alignment with me?
- 3:34This is, again, this is so cool now.
- 3:36And this is You know, what earlier in here, I'm thinking I started my career, I was like, okay.
- 3:41Well, I know I wanna get.
- 3:42So which hoops do I have to jump through to get that?
- 3:44And I'm just gonna get it done.
- 3:46And now when I'm talking to younger female leaders, they're like, Well, I wanna see what
- 3:50they're doing with the environments.
- 3:51Or at fact, I'd like to see, you know, how my leadership story which I'm, you know, I'm
- 3:57talking to maybe somebody in their twenties, and they're talking about their leadership
- 4:01story, which is really refreshing to hear because I'm thinking I'm looking at a lot of
- 4:05female leaders that are older that are now figuring out why even though they've been
- 4:11embodying it all along, So I think it's generationally there is I have experienced that
- 4:17I'm sure you have too.
- 4:18They're coming from a a place of strength that says I bring these things.
- 4:23I'm a female.
- 4:25However, I recognize there's limitations, but it's not about me.
- 4:29It wants to have done a bit of you know, coaching and awareness and, you know, an
- 4:34awareness is such the gift that I think, you know, now it's kind of a bit of a given.
- 4:38Right?
- 4:39So you you just have the mentor.
- 4:41You you know, you do your coaching.
- 4:43You have that awareness and you look at yourself holistically.
- 4:47Versus before, it was kinda like, how am I gonna fit into this role?
- 4:51And, you know, what am I gonna do to morph myself?
- 4:54Yeah.
- 4:55You know?
- 4:56I mean, I think and and this is the great thing, and and that's my recommendation for
- 5:00everybody younger also.
- 5:02Make sure there is time for reflection in your life.
- 5:05So that you have that awareness you build on your consciousness of the big picture of things
- 5:11also.
- 5:12And and also this area of specialization.
- 5:14I think, no, it's it's it is important with wholeness because otherwise, we almost get
- 5:19them.
- 5:20It's not good for a brain to do only one thing.
- 5:22We need to do several things.
- 5:23So that our brain is stimulated more intelligent and more awake.
- 5:27And that's important at this time.
- 5:28So we don't, you know, become manipulated by news, by corporate bosses, or any of these
- 5:33things.
- 5:33The ways they alert.
- 5:35So I also I I I talked a lot about something I called the Renaissance woman like the of the
- 5:42man that is the modern.
- 5:45She has many different things she can do.
- 5:48And
- 5:50And it's actually refreshing, right, to to to look in from.
- 5:53Right?
- 5:54And now you think, you know, we're in, you know, 2022 and, you know, 10 years from now,
- 5:58what would what will it be the possibilities, versus just focusing on the blocks that still
- 6:05exist?
- 6:05And I think you're like, to your point, we have to look on a macro level to to what are the
- 6:11impair impediments that that stop us till today and how can I become part of that solution in
- 6:18my in my purvey, like, in my tenure, a leader, how is it that I can help others along the way?
- 6:25Because I now I have the skill and knowledge, you know, of wisdom to be able to pass on and
- 6:31for other, you know, leaders that are at the, you know, latter part of the curse, how are
- 6:37they giving back?
- 6:37So let's talk a little bit about that because I think that I know that's what you're about.
- 6:41I know that's what when it's about And I have been, you know, for everybody listening, I've
- 6:46I've been fortunate I've been speaking, at the win conference in 2022 in Rome.
- 6:50So I'm excited and I'll get to meet Kristen and her, you know, her following in Rome.
- 6:57But what is it that you're finding now?
- 7:00Like, we're talking about a leg And I talk a lot about legacy, leadership in my new book.
- 7:05Well, what is it that you're finding now with, kind of leaders that are kinda at the latter
- 7:13end of the career.
- 7:14What is it that they're doing, or what is it that they can do to ensure that this passing of
- 7:19out of knowledge is done in a way that helps us kinda get to where we need to get.
- 7:24Yeah.
- 7:25And that's such an important question.
- 7:28And it's pivotal.
- 7:30It's for the for our future that this happens.
- 7:34And I think what what what I try to do is to mix people at the conference to invite people
- 7:43different generations come together and some sessions be mixed people.
- 7:48Other sessions segmented because not everybody's open to either.
- 7:55So so we need to work on continue to work on the mind sets that working with people
- 8:01different.
- 8:01That can be generational, pigmentation, gender, all the different ones.
- 8:08But what kind of women who have experience do today?
- 8:12I mean, they can be a pillar of support for younger ones listening to them.
- 8:18Sharing with them, but also this capacity of listening.
- 8:21I have noticed over so many years of listening to many women that It's not only about having a
- 8:28voice.
- 8:29Yeah.
- 8:29It's about having a voice.
- 8:31There's a is that somebody listens to you that's even more powerful and and some women
- 8:38are even shocked just by being listening to.
- 8:40They're like, so so that is something we can do for each other, listen to each other.
- 8:48And then I think also if you are a resourceful woman, you know, put also some money into it.
- 8:55Like, we have a whole scholarship program.
- 8:57I invite women from many different countries to come to be in I believe we spend a percentage
- 9:03of what we and to get into even a visa office to get somebody from Himalaya or Cameroon come
- 9:08into another country So there are many things you can do to mentor women in in in situations.
- 9:17So less resource less resource all we meant to actually bring everybody up.
- 9:21So it's one thing you can do and continue to work on your own awareness and then your own
- 9:25consciousness and heal.
- 9:27Because I also meet women who have been around for a while that have given so much, and they
- 9:32were also not heard and seen and valued.
- 9:34So it's it's about just Get that off and and clean up, go out there in the world and share
- 9:41your skills.
- 9:42And and also here, the power of meeting now is also that we can start things any age.
- 9:48I met met the other day, a lady who just became a yoga teacher.
- 9:51She's sixty two.
- 9:52And somebody else does the same.
- 9:54She's twenty two.
- 9:55So it's like, all is possible right now.
- 9:57And of course, there are some limitations and some differences, but if you can somehow be
- 10:05there for each other if I can be inspired by someone young.
- 10:08I feel like I can learn or be held by someone who's been older than me.
- 10:14Or if I can be, like, enter inspired by a dynamic entrepreneurial North American woman,
- 10:23grounded by my friend, charity, Nigeria, heart based by somebody I know in Colombia.
- 10:30So it's we can we can get different.
- 10:32We can we can give and receive different things from different people if we live in this world
- 10:37of inclusion and diversity and mixing with different
- 10:41And and I often think that, you never know where your next teacher comes from.
- 10:48Absolutely.
- 10:49Absolutely.
- 10:50And And and another thing is that I have done a lot,
- 10:56you know, when started up as the name Bimini International Network.
- 10:59That are most important thing is this leadership conference and it's about
- 11:02networking, but it's about so much more than that.
- 11:05But at the core of it is that We've been moving from a very hierarchical way of operating
- 11:10society to a more network base or to a combination of the 2.
- 11:15But in a network based way of organizing society organizations in our own varied life,
- 11:22relationships are so important.
- 11:25And and, yeah, so basically that's And
- 11:30at the end of the day, like, you know, the title of my book is ROR, which is return on
- 11:34relationships.
- 11:35Right?
- 11:35So how is it that you Yes.
- 11:38Right?
- 11:38And you're the leader, and I think oftentimes you think what are the what are the things that
- 11:42I'm looking for from others to perform But with the concept that I've come up with, which is
- 11:47based on a lot of, research that already exists with authentic leadership, but I include
- 11:51authentic heart readership is Absolutely.
- 11:53You are you are, you know, the beacon, but you have to take care of your light first in order
- 11:59to be able to spread.
- 12:01That accordingly.
- 12:01And it's a reciprocal, back and forth.
- 12:05Right?
- 12:05It's not a one way, which is very, like you said, you know, autocratic and old school male
- 12:11perspective.
- 12:12Now we're recognizing that, you know, in fact, It could be some one of the youngest people on
- 12:17your team or around you that may have the solution.
- 12:20So to create that piece, which takes a lot but it it starts with the leader.
- 12:26It starts with the leader.
- 12:28Yeah.
- 12:28And
- 12:28the so it's and then another thing that I work on a lot, and I share a lot is this too.
- 12:36This is about so we have this authentic leadership and authenticity means also that I
- 12:42can be true to myself, which is an exploration every day.
- 12:47You know, we discover something.
- 12:49But to dare to be treated yourself means also certain level of courage sometimes and to take
- 12:55the stab or ethical ethics and aesthetics.
- 13:00I think either take a stand for beauty, for nature, for a lot of these things, and and I
- 13:07think that if all the women all over the world could could be aware or not and and strong
- 13:17enough to say no to what's unacceptable immediately.
- 13:20The world will change.
- 13:23Just by that one action.
- 13:25Just by that one action.
- 13:26Yeah.
- 13:27You know, I know, when I was introduced to to to Kristen, she, was at the UN.
- 13:33So I'm I'd like to talk a little bit about that and because I think, you know, what a what a
- 13:39platform, and it's amazing.
- 13:41That you were there.
- 13:43Yeah.
- 13:43What what what happened to the UN and and how did that now that we talk about your story,
- 13:49which has been amazing.
- 13:50Legacy of women and authenticity and and being true to yourself.
- 13:55What happened that the UN.
- 13:59Yeah.
- 14:01I think maybe that goes into so when you are as treats yourself as you can be and authentic.
- 14:07And when your relationships are not necessarily transactional, but more synchronistic, So
- 14:15working in a family way, attracting things or receiving things or being awake to whoever sits
- 14:21next to you.
- 14:23That maybe you talked to and you don't know, but maybe later that could mean something.
- 14:27Things start happening to you also.
- 14:31So I was, by chance, introduced to someone in India who introduced me to somebody else and so
- 14:39I started to work with a group called global citizen forum together with VIN, then the head
- 14:44of the global citizen forum, and we got together and said, let's do something the UN.
- 14:49And then somebody else came along.
- 14:51There we were in the US.
- 14:52Well, it doesn't exactly like that.
- 14:54There was a lot of things happening from the 80 set of being in the event, but but we were
- 15:00there in in the in the big venue together also with you and organization.
- 15:06So we help in May timely event on inspiring women, to create a more peaceful and
- 15:14sustainable future.
- 15:16And, and this was a collaboration where wind and myself was in charge of directing and then
- 15:21producing events together with these 2 other sessions.
- 15:24And what happened was that we had a chance to look and and bring in also a lot of women from
- 15:30businesses, from companies, and and Yeah.
- 15:34And that I think was also important that it's not only NGO and political leaders that meet in
- 15:39UN, but we can bring along also women and some men from what they could call in the UN, the
- 15:45private sector, to also see how they can more be a part of creating this change for a more
- 15:52sustainable and more fuse peaceful future.
- 15:55And and this was really step 1.
- 15:57We we plan to take next step was in Geneva.
- 16:00Next step is in New York.
- 16:01And of 23 or maybe probably 2024 now.
- 16:05Amazing.
- 16:06Amazing.
- 16:07Just, you know, when I listen to your path, you know, you must sometimes step back.
- 16:13I'm sure, you know, in in applying your awareness and say, I'm sure you had this vision
- 16:18embodied in you, of something that you wanted to feel.
- 16:22And I, you know, I'm just thinking about you know, and being lucky enough to be at the 25th,
- 16:29anniversary of when in Rome, when you look back now and if you could kind of, you know, say
- 16:38what you feel right now about not just women, but women.
- 16:45Yeah, I feel like, when it comes to women, I feel it's almost like a It's been a pilgrimage.
- 16:51It sounds strange, but that's the word it comes to me because it's been along dedication and a
- 16:59journey that I felt was my inner journey, and it has been a collective journey because
- 17:05related with so many women that have come along in this uprising.
- 17:10So where we are right now, it's both and And at 25 years, it's often referred to as generation.
- 17:18So it's as if there was an end of an ebook, and it's also incredible beginning of the new where
- 17:24so many of these young women are coming up with confidence and courage.
- 17:28So It's like, wow, it's an amazing time on the one hand.
- 17:33But then also looking at the world with the board with many, many different challenges
- 17:39right now.
- 17:40We are also so needed.
- 17:42And I've had for a few years now an extreme deep sense that the world depends on women's
- 17:50dreams being realized.
- 17:51And by dreams, obviously, I mean, the vision or so.
- 17:54And if we can make ord dreams or yearnings or wishes or goals, all the regions happen, we
- 18:02will be alright.
- 18:04And if you don't, I don't know.
- 18:07I don't know even, but I don't wanna go there.
- 18:09But more, there's something now that is a critical moment, and and and it's critical that
- 18:15that that women have a place.
- 18:19And if Emily is happening, I'm not saying it's happening on its own.
- 18:22It's happening because of people like yourself, myself, all the women have been working from
- 18:27this.
- 18:28But, it's, it's an important
- 18:31And, no, I I love that thought.
- 18:32Right?
- 18:33It's like, what is it that I can do?
- 18:36Right?
- 18:37Like, what is it that I can do in my you know, 10 meter radius around me and to live my
- 18:42passion and I think of myself, you know, becoming a psychologist and wanting to because
- 18:47I recognize that I needed a voice.
- 18:50And then I also in turn wanted to ensure that anybody that I could interface with and I
- 18:55decided this, I think, quite young, that I wanted to ensure that I chose a path that
- 19:01allowed others likes to be Yeah.
- 19:04And I did that a angel.
- 19:06You know, I don't know.
- 19:07I think that can take what eleven year was thinking that.
- 19:09But because I had had experiences, where I felt that I wasn't my light wasn't shining and the
- 19:16environmental context going back to the original was not affording that light.
- 19:21To shine, I wanted to ensure that whatever path I took in life that in fact, I would be a vain
- 19:28to others
- 19:29to be
- 19:29able to have that.
- 19:30And that was my that's my legacy and my leadership story because I really wanted to
- 19:35have voice, but I wanted others to have voice.
- 19:38So it's, you know, yes.
- 19:39It's it's it's stuff.
- 19:40It's like, yeah, it's like when I was up there in the Northern Russia, you know, on my own
- 19:47back 20 26 on the year ago, and that's when this women, they are so smart, but they can't
- 19:52they don't have choice, and I wanted them to have choice.
- 19:54So it's it's and and the more I travel, the more I thought, so I want people have choice.
- 19:59That was the case of the economy and freedom freedom freedom.
- 20:02And, and I wanna treat them too.
- 20:04I moved from a little town in Norway.
- 20:06I started to travel.
- 20:07So it's it's so it's, of course, we do it for ourselves.
- 20:13Yeah, it's interesting.
- 20:16So I this has been amazing.
- 20:18What a what a exchange.
- 20:20This has been a space that anybody listening will enjoy and take something away from it.
- 20:26So Is there any last words you'd like to share, before we kind of sign off?
- 20:32Yeah.
- 20:32I think, like, the last thing's for all of women, don't take shortcuts.
- 20:36Like, be be, do the right things.
- 20:41I think the time of the good people is here now.
- 20:43It's like to the right things.
- 20:45It's it's hard sometimes.
- 20:47And still, it just walked up.
- 20:50Uh-uh.
- 20:51Don't don't deviate.
- 20:53From your dreams, from what you want to do, from what you dream to do, and what you long to
- 20:58do.
- 20:59And and Do the good things?
- 21:03Some people say, no.
- 21:03It's not possible.
- 21:04And it is possible.
- 21:06That's what I hope is better.
- 21:07And I would say before I sign off, I think of I'm a little girl from Trinidad and Tobago.
- 21:12I grew up in a little village called Diamond Village.
- 21:14And I had a dream of wanting to do and make a difference in people's lives.
- 21:19And here I came from that little island to, Canada and anything is possible once you set
- 21:27your it's not it's not an easy road, but don't lose track of of your dreams and know that with
- 21:34the right synchronicity around you to your point earlier, anything is possible.
- 21:38And together, we're so powerful but in isolation, it would, you know, we take away the
- 21:44gift of, light and and possibility to really keep that in mind as you go out there and don't
- 21:53don't lose track of what that vision to look like for you.
- 21:57So I'm excited about Rome.
- 21:58I look forward to meeting you for anybody that happens to be in Rome.
- 22:03Roundly, it's the is the 20th to the 22nd September of this year.
- 22:10Come and come and join us and spend some time.
- 22:12I'll do be doing a a workshop and awareness and and and being involved in plenary is talking
- 22:18about some of the things that Kristen and I have talked about today.
- 22:21So, Kristen, Thank you.
- 22:22Thank you.
- 22:23And for everyone.
- 22:23Thank you.
- 22:24Yeah.
- 22:24Thanks so much.
- 22:25Thank you.
- 22:26Bye.
- 22:26Thank you.
- 22:30Welcome to authentic living with Roxanne, a place where we have as conversations about
- 22:38things that really matter in our lives.
- 22:41And now here's your host, Roxanne Derhodge.
