- 0:33Hamster with a blunt pen knife for doing quicker.
- 0:36Welcome back to Hubster with a blood pen Knife, The Doctor Who
- 0:40Commentary Podcast. Mr. Luke Hollins.
- 0:45Hello. Hello Joe, How are you doing?
- 0:48Oh well, you know, work was pretty stressful today, you
- 0:51know, But I knew I was coming to hang out with a new friend
- 0:53tonight. How are you doing?
- 0:55I'm doing well. I'm doing well, Yeah.
- 0:57I can't wait to talk about this amazing story.
- 1:00Well, yes, and we, we are going to, you know, have a little
- 1:03peripheral discussion about Jodie and her era before we go
- 1:06into Revolution of the Daleks, which we are here to talk about
- 1:09today. Somehow not covered on hamster.
- 1:12It's battling. But before we do that, you know,
- 1:16I could have sworn, you know, I saw your name turn up on a
- 1:19schedule recently on a few websites.
- 1:24Please not criminal. Ones not criminal ones.
- 1:27Was it not some kind of something?
- 1:29You want to confess? No, no, no.
- 1:31You sure? I'm trying to get you more
- 1:34assignments here, not less. OK.
- 1:36OK. Now why don't you tell me all
- 1:38about the Paul Sprague competition and what this is all
- 1:41about? Yeah.
- 1:43So every year Big Finish runs the Paul Sprague Opportunity,
- 1:46which is in memory of Paul Sprague.
- 1:47He worked at Big Finish and sadly died, died quite young.
- 1:51But they run an opportunity every year where anyone can
- 1:53write a story and you have to write 500 word synopsis and a
- 1:56500 word entry, sort of opening of the story.
- 2:00And this year it was specifically Jodie themed.
- 2:03It was the 13th Doctor one. But I've been entering it for
- 2:06every year for the last 10 years pretty much.
- 2:10And this year I won. So very excitingly.
- 2:13This Christmas, my first ever Big Finish came out.
- 2:17You can listen to it right now. And may I say to anyone who's
- 2:20listening, please do go and listen to it.
- 2:22It is fabulous. It's got a wonderful concept at
- 2:25its heart. But Jesus Christ, man, you're
- 2:28not happy to just sit on that concept?
- 2:29No, no, we go on a whirlwind tour.
- 2:31We go to all these whales and it's absolutely amazing.
- 2:34Yeah, I. Imagination you have.
- 2:37Yeah, I thought it would be a lot easier if I had sort of
- 2:40three stories within one story and I could just write these
- 2:43short little bits and connect them all together.
- 2:45But actually that ended up becoming quite unmanageable.
- 2:48And I Right, you're meant to write 5000 words, and I think my
- 2:52first draft was about 11,000 words.
- 2:54Oh. Boy, OK.
- 2:57So like hack? To pieces then.
- 2:59Hit the pieces. So yeah, maybe the director's
- 3:02cut or the the writers cut come out at some point, but can.
- 3:06Ioffer an enticing teaser to the people this week.
- 3:09All right, OK, imagine. All right, Imagine if a day of
- 3:13the week, you know, the title may give away which one, a day
- 3:16of the week goes missing, and it just happens to be a day where
- 3:20the Doctor achieves a great deal in the universe.
- 3:24And when it's taken, all of that is undone and all the chaos that
- 3:28ensues. Yeah, exactly.
- 3:30And then the doctor has to go into the day with the owner of
- 3:33the lost property office to convince her to give her the day
- 3:35back so she can save the universe.
- 3:38I mean, just to say in a story, in a lost property office is
- 3:41genius. You know it's never been done
- 3:43before. And Doctor Who?
- 3:44Now I know, but I kind of, I sort of wanted to cram so much
- 3:48more into it. I mean, the great thing was on
- 3:50the cover art they did for it, they'd like a film canister and
- 3:53there was a production code on it for the Feast of Stephen for
- 3:56Dalek's master plan. And so there's a little bit that
- 3:58I wrote into it where there's like a Pew Pew Pew and the
- 4:01canister gets blown up. So that's that's where a few
- 4:04missing stories are. And My wedding Ring, because I
- 4:06was inspired by losing my wedding ring to write the story
- 4:10that ends up in there as well. Are you telling me that you are
- 4:13responsible for the destruction of the Feast of Stephen?
- 4:16Because I've got someone downstairs, right?
- 4:18It's got a few words to say to you.
- 4:21Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hopefully I can get it back at
- 4:23some point. In a purely fictitious way.
- 4:27I mean, do you know what the genius of all this is is you've
- 4:29got, you don't what you say 10 years you've been submitting.
- 4:32Oh, you're pretty much I think. Yeah, at least.
- 4:34At least I've put 10 entries in, Yeah.
- 4:36Are you listening to this right? First of all, you've chosen this
- 4:38man as the the best of. All of the bunch.
- 4:42Right. Yeah.
- 4:42So, you know, I mean, they probably had a lot of trolls as
- 4:46well. But you know, I'm sure they had
- 4:48some great stuff. Go in.
- 4:49I mean, my mate Jack. Oh, God bless him.
- 4:52I bet I'll say anything on the call.
- 4:53We might listen, but he's got nine other stories all ready to
- 4:57go. Like if you, if you've been
- 4:58doing it for 10 years, where are all the other nine?
- 5:00Come on. Most of all, my phone notes.
- 5:03I'm constantly writing stuff on my phone notes of like, oh,
- 5:05that'd be a good thing to do. Would you have one?
- 5:08Year. One year I had I wrote all about
- 5:10a time hotel where every wind, every door went on.
- 5:16But literally it was like 2 years beforehand.
- 5:18So maybe Moffett copied that for a.
- 5:21Now we know whose waste paper baskets he's been scrambling.
- 5:24About in Yeah, he's been sitting around my bins.
- 5:27I mean, I was just about, excuse me, I was just about to say like
- 5:30what I was for a great because there was so many wonderful
- 5:33ideas in the website. It wasn't.
- 5:36Can you give me just one other one that you've conjured up out
- 5:39of all the others? What in what of all your past
- 5:42stories? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:43Come on. What's your?
- 5:43Favorite. What's your favorite?
- 5:45Apart from the one that obviously was made.
- 5:47Yes, well, the time H1 I got really excited by because it was
- 5:51like it wasn't so much the doors that they went through, it was
- 5:53the windows looked out on a different time.
- 5:56So it was about a man that had lost his wife and every he'd
- 6:00discovered this time hotel and he went to this room every
- 6:04anniversary they had. But unfortunately it sort of
- 6:08always looked out on on the when their first meeting, walking
- 6:11along the sea front and meeting together.
- 6:14And then somehow Daleks were involved.
- 6:15And then it got yeah. It's breaking in my heart
- 6:19already when you watch that dismal Christmas Day episode of
- 6:23Stole the Idea and I was like. Hang on, that's my bloody idea.
- 6:26Would have been much better in my short trip it.
- 6:29Was so disturbed. It was depressing, wasn't it?
- 6:31It wasn't great. Terrible.
- 6:33My God. Well, I mean, we're, we're going
- 6:36back to the era before that, you know, happy days.
- 6:38Well, actually, let's talk about that then, shall we?
- 6:41Let's talk about. No, wait, hang on.
- 6:44I'm getting ahead of myself. I want to ask you first, if you
- 6:47don't mind, let's do a bit of probing.
- 6:50I beg your pardon? How did you insert yourself into
- 6:54Doctor Who, Luke? So.
- 6:58That's alright. Take yourself back, Joe.
- 7:02It's October 1988. It's a drizzly evening.
- 7:08Put your fingers on me, lap. Yeah.
- 7:10Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've already gone to bed early
- 7:11because I'm only about 5 years old at the time, and from my bed
- 7:16I hear terrifying voices downstairs.
- 7:18It is one episode, I'm not sure which, of Remembrance of the
- 7:22Daleks. Oh.
- 7:24So that. Was cool in for you?
- 7:26They were cool in come. Downstairs.
- 7:29For some reason, for ages I had a memory that it was the last
- 7:33episode, so it was Dave Ross. But I'm not sure if it was or if
- 7:36that's like a false memory. But I was so scared.
- 7:39Basically, I came upstairs utterly terrified.
- 7:41I was like, please, I never want to hear this theme tune.
- 7:43I never want to hear Daleks. I never want to see any of this
- 7:46ever again. How?
- 7:48Did that work out for you? Yeah.
- 7:49It didn't work out very well because not long after that I
- 7:54started talking to my mum about like, I'd love to see an episode
- 7:56that didn't have Daleks in it. And in our local library they
- 8:00had the Arcing Space on VHS and I watched that and then they
- 8:06also had The Five Doctors on VHS and watched that.
- 8:10And then when I was a little bit older and I was better at
- 8:12reading, I started diving into Target books and started getting
- 8:15though I think I must have read Vengeance from Varos about 6 * a
- 8:20hardback copy of Vengeance from Varos.
- 8:22Unhealthy, but yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:25And then what really got me into it was 1993 or sort of 9293.
- 8:30So when all the repeats were on, I started watching it.
- 8:32Then Slight Mind Robber, Sea Devils, Genesis as Daleks,
- 8:37obviously Planet of the Daleks, which is my absolute favorite on
- 8:40on, you know, across the actual 30th anniversary, which was my
- 8:4410th birthday, 10th. What a great year to watch
- 8:48Planet of the Daleks. I know I just absolutely loved
- 8:51and to watch every every like Friday evening coming home and
- 8:54it being on, it was such a treat.
- 8:56At the end of the week going to get fish, my mum would get fish
- 8:58and chips. Watched Planet of the Daleks,
- 9:00all those little videos that were on at the beginning before
- 9:02haha. Had like the antiques one, they
- 9:04had the Unit 1, they had the missing story one with being
- 9:06Levine on it and then you had in that run you had dimensions in
- 9:10Time was in that as well. I mean, you were so favorite,
- 9:13weren't you? Yeah, I was.
- 9:14So yeah, I voted. Did I vote for Mandy?
- 9:17I can't remember. I voted for no.
- 9:19One voted for Big Ron, did they? Think I voted for Big Ron
- 9:23actually because I like Big Ron. I mean, 13 million people can't
- 9:28be wrong, right? Don't.
- 9:29Mention. Yeah, exactly.
- 9:31And then obviously you had, you know, I've got really into the
- 9:333rd Doctor around there as well because obviously John Perky was
- 9:35everywhere. He's on ghost events based
- 9:37Paradise of Death he was on. Crank up your granny.
- 9:40I mean, he was everywhere. An old house party.
- 9:42He was. Well, well, well, yes.
- 9:45Hello, yes, I just that that was sort of cemented it.
- 9:51I think then, because I didn't know obviously then about things
- 9:53like missing stories or like the sort of the history of the show.
- 9:56I remember asking my parents at Christmas for a bunch of books
- 10:00and I got like the the David J Howe, like the 70s and and there
- 10:06was there was one. Was it called time?
- 10:08Time frames? With all the covers.
- 10:10You have all the covers in it? Yeah, I used to sit every night
- 10:13as like a 10 yard. I just flick through that.
- 10:16You was in too deep. At that point, yeah, it wasn't
- 10:20the fact that Katie Manning was topless in it.
- 10:22That wasn't no. Did you see that companions book
- 10:26that they brought? Out.
- 10:27Yeah, that was, yeah. I had the copy of that as well.
- 10:30Petra Perry on page 2. Unbelievable, isn't it?
- 10:33That is burned into my mind. It may have had huge influence
- 10:38on my life, but in the wrong direction.
- 10:41But I am weirdly it got to just like just after 96, obviously it
- 10:46came back as very exciting about the TV movies or watch that.
- 10:49And around that time, when I started to become a teenager, I
- 10:51got a bit self-conscious about the whole Doctor Who and I
- 10:56packed everything I had away, got rid of everything I told.
- 11:00Me got rid of it, got rid of it. Yeah, yeah, the whole shelves of
- 11:03Target books. No.
- 11:05Everything I just like no get read I'm I'm done so towards the
- 11:08late 90s. So many twists and turns in this
- 11:11story. Luke, come on, keep going.
- 11:12Yeah, I I have my own hiatus. I have my own Wilton peers.
- 11:18What were you watching at the time then when Doctor Who wasn't
- 11:20in? I quite liked a bit of Red Dwarf
- 11:23at the time. That's a predictable answer, you
- 11:26know. Exactly.
- 11:27I did like a bit of that. But you just said The Crystal
- 11:29Maze or something like that. I would have been.
- 11:33But now I sort of gave it all up.
- 11:34So I don't know. I got really self-conscious
- 11:36about it. I gave it all up.
- 11:37I told my parents I was like do not mention it to anyone.
- 11:40I think I basically I wanted a girlfriend at the time and I was
- 11:42like please don't. I've got to put this away
- 11:44because I can't have this around.
- 11:45I can't. Believe you swore your parents
- 11:49to secrecy I. Swore them to secrecy like do
- 11:51not dare mention this ever happened.
- 11:54Well, secretly I'd be in my room and I'd I'd like a box under the
- 11:57bed that kept a few like annuals in a few books and I'd secretly
- 12:01look and go I love this. This is so nice I.
- 12:04Really thought you had all sorts under that bed and it's just
- 12:06like the Abominable Snowman target, you know?
- 12:09I know. Yeah, exactly.
- 12:10Yeah, and no previous partners after that.
- 12:14Obviously I'm secretly there, like sneaking down to try and
- 12:16watch the new series or whatever.
- 12:18I'm being at university. Oh, even when the new series
- 12:21came back, yeah, you still kept this under wraps.
- 12:23I kept it under wraps. Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 12:25When the new series came back I'd be like yeah, I'm just
- 12:27nipping him to my room a second, you know, on a Saturday.
- 12:31Yeah, I'm just going to get a few pre drinks in you now.
- 12:33Just I'll see you in a couple of hours time.
- 12:35Yeah, for a. Mate.
- 12:37And goes, yeah, he wanks a lot. Yeah, you're up there watching
- 12:41Gridlock. Exactly.
- 12:43Literally. Literally.
- 12:45Yeah. But I.
- 12:46Mean I'm I'm hoping that the story is going to end with I got
- 12:49over all of that. I, it does end with that.
- 12:52I got all over all of that and, and I've embraced it all again.
- 12:56I'm starting to buy all my targets back now, but I mean
- 12:59they've all gone up in price now.
- 13:01Yeah it's heartbreaking. I got rid of all mine as well
- 13:04when I moved out. It's a story I'll tell a million
- 13:06times. I threw it, basically, my
- 13:08ex-husband cursed. A man said to me, something's
- 13:12got to go. We can't take everything.
- 13:14And I had all the original books.
- 13:15I had all the Targets and all the VHS things.
- 13:17I had all the DVD. And so I just went with great
- 13:20for a mall in a bin bag and in a skip.
- 13:22In a skip. I didn't even pass them on or
- 13:24anything. I know.
- 13:25Do you know how much they're worth now, these books?
- 13:27I know, I know well like in my mind like a Target book is 20P
- 13:31and the shop now and there's like £2.50's, the cheapest you
- 13:35can get one. Why do you pay you Yeah, when
- 13:37you're playing with a yo-yo and chewing gum back in the day
- 13:39nowadays? Yeah, I.
- 13:42Paid. I paid 27 lbs for time and the
- 13:45Rani recently. Oh my God.
- 13:47I mean I had like loads of the blue spine ones that are now
- 13:50working absolute fortune. I remember getting the invasion
- 13:53when it came out, Dalek invasion of Earth, loads of them.
- 13:57I just think God what was I doing?
- 13:59I I had an early edition of 1st edition of Wheeling Space as
- 14:02well, which is now worth an absolute fortune.
- 14:05Now, can I ask you a personal question?
- 14:07Go on. OK, there'll be many, so get
- 14:10used to it. So your wife now?
- 14:14Yes. So did you go into that
- 14:17relationship immediately as a Doctor Who fan, or was there a
- 14:20moment where you had to sit her down and go?
- 14:22I'll have something brutal to confess to you.
- 14:25I, I, I did sort of confess it. Do you know what I thought?
- 14:29I had so many relationships where I was like, I've got to
- 14:32hide. This how many you?
- 14:34Talk. Not that, not that way, but with
- 14:39her, I kind of thought, do you know what?
- 14:41I really like her. Like I really like her.
- 14:42I'm going to get this out of the way early and maybe that'll be a
- 14:45tester if she doesn't go complete weirdo.
- 14:49I mean, I'll do that with like ribbon, you know, like.
- 14:52Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. No, God continue.
- 14:55And she went, oh, OK. Well, cool, yeah.
- 14:59So you were like, oh God, all these years.
- 15:01All these years I could have just said that what I was doing,
- 15:04it must. Be a great dramatic moment.
- 15:07It was, it was for me. I don't think it was for her.
- 15:09I think she just didn't really ignore.
- 15:10She ignored it. What you're.
- 15:12Basically saying is you came out as a Doctor Who, you came out of
- 15:15the closet. But she is the only person other
- 15:19than my parents who I've really sort of told.
- 15:23Well, I'm sorry. I.
- 15:24Mean the numbers are quite good for this thing, you know, So you
- 15:27might have told a few more people when this goes out.
- 15:29Yeah, well. Nobody else within your life,
- 15:33your work, you. No, no, no.
- 15:36God, you are closeted, ain't you?
- 15:41I mean, usually when people turn up on the Zoom call, I can see
- 15:44all manner of geekery behind them.
- 15:47Now, I'm just going to set the scene behind Luke right now.
- 15:49I mean, it looks like a piano force behind you there.
- 15:52Is that really? Yeah.
- 15:53Yeah. You played a beautiful.
- 15:55Thank you. I can't, I can't really play for
- 15:57her. And some very sophisticated
- 15:59looking library behind you. So where's all the Doctor Who?
- 16:03Actually that that is upstairs, that is upstairs.
- 16:06I should have brought it down. So actually when this when the
- 16:09when the latest when this story dropped on the short trip
- 16:12dropped, I was down in Ramsgate, actually, of all places they can
- 16:18and went in a second hand bookshop and they had an entire
- 16:21shelf of targets. And I was like, I'm going to
- 16:24treat myself and bought bought a whole lot of them.
- 16:27So I've now got how much? That set you back.
- 16:30Yeah, set me up a lot. Sorry darling, we can't pay the
- 16:35rent this month. Yeah.
- 16:38No, she was with me at the time. She was.
- 16:39I was like, no, I just, I've got to do it.
- 16:42I've got to do it. I'm afraid I need to start doing
- 16:44it again. Consider it therapy, darling.
- 16:47All right, I need to. Raise.
- 16:49My love for this stuff. Yeah.
- 16:51Oh. Speaking dopamine as they're
- 16:53reading the edge of destruction. This has been one of my favorite
- 16:56Doctor Who journeys I've heard so far.
- 16:58You know, I've been so pleased. I'm so pleased that, well, I
- 17:02mean, I'll truly understand the depths of your fandom as we go
- 17:05through this, all right? Because you can usually tell by
- 17:08by how obscure the references to other stories that they drop
- 17:12off. Well, let's start with Jodie
- 17:13then, because we're talking about Revolution of the Daleks
- 17:16and obviously Jodie was the Doctor in your Big Finish short
- 17:20trip. So I'm going to sort of not
- 17:24frame it how I normally do, which is what do you think of
- 17:25her? Because I know you like her and
- 17:27we're talking about her. So let's assume that you do.
- 17:30But when you went to write your short trip, what was it?
- 17:36What, what was it about her Doctor?
- 17:38How did you pin her down on the page, if you're pardon the bum?
- 17:42Yeah, Well, I think she's not. It's not.
- 17:45She's easy to write for. But like, the character is so
- 17:49sort of fully formed that you know exactly what she's going to
- 17:53say at any minute. You know exactly the kind of
- 17:55quip she's going to say. She's just.
- 18:00Yeah, you sort of that mix of humor and the quirkiness, the
- 18:04littler sides. You know, she's just, it's a joy
- 18:07to write for because you're like, oh, I know exactly what
- 18:09she's going to say. Now.
- 18:10She would say something like this and I could sort of really
- 18:12feel the voice in my head. It was so I have to say when it
- 18:17was so authentic, like Claire Corbett's reading as well was
- 18:21just so Jodie as well. But you know, it's nothing
- 18:23without the words, right And and just the jokes that that I
- 18:27always think Jodie's fast and the speed of her lines in in
- 18:30your story. I was like, yeah, there's a
- 18:32rhythm to it. And you just got it in a way
- 18:35that actually some of the big finishes that I've heard some do
- 18:39and some don't. And it's a a difficult thing to
- 18:41get right. But also as well, you managed to
- 18:44do Jodie Exposition in a very non Christianal sort of a way.
- 18:50Bravosa. I mean, I love that kind of
- 18:54exposition when it's sort of funny.
- 18:56The hard thing with that though is when, because obviously a
- 18:58short trip isn't like a full cast audio drama, so you've got
- 19:01one voice doing it, so you have to have a better.
- 19:03Like it though it did feel like you had a full cast in there.
- 19:06Yeah, you have to have that exposition because you can't
- 19:09sort of have it's one actor speaking to themselves.
- 19:13So you can't sort of go, oh, yes, Doctor, what do you mean
- 19:15Doctor speaking backwards of boys?
- 19:18Although Claire Corbett did have to do a bit, though.
- 19:20She did it very, very well. But so you sort of write these
- 19:22bit more sort of exposition pieces and I don't know.
- 19:26Yeah, it's just, I mean, I love Jodie.
- 19:28I think she's great, really. Yeah, do you know I was, I was
- 19:32so ready for a female doctor when they announced it.
- 19:35Oh. You know, and whilst the world
- 19:37was screaming at its rage at the the hideous decision to put a
- 19:42woman as a Time Lord, I was just so happy.
- 19:45And then I think series 11 I really liked, but I didn't love
- 19:51then series 12 from Spy 4. Now from probably resolution on,
- 19:56I was just like, fuck, this is so good.
- 19:58There's so much energy in this now, especially after I do.
- 20:02Very much like Peter Capaldi, but I have so many issues with
- 20:05that era. It was dark, it was quite slow,
- 20:08it was very angst ridden. It was very sort of it was a lot
- 20:13of self therapy going on for the Doctor and I just wanted to just
- 20:17just some fun and some adventures and and all of that.
- 20:20And we do get some of that with Jodie as well.
- 20:22By the time we got to Flux Matt, it was just my favorite of the
- 20:24new series that era. Yeah, I, I, I think that was my
- 20:28favorite too. I think it just got better and
- 20:30better and better. And then when you get to Flux
- 20:33and then Power of the Doctor, oh boy.
- 20:36What's? The best bit of Power of the
- 20:37Doctor for you. I think it's the bit where Peter
- 20:42Davidson says, what am I thinking of, Cyberman?
- 20:45What am I thinking of now? She goes Patrick.
- 20:49I like the bit where it goes. Oh, yes, he knew exactly what he
- 20:55When I saw Colin on the screen, I punched the air.
- 20:58Yeah, but the, oh, I'm Peter Paul McCann as well.
- 21:01I was like, Oh my God, anything else?
- 21:04It actually sort of made the 60th anniversary.
- 21:08Well, we've just got Beep the meep and a weird pulling the
- 21:11cracker regeneration seem a little bit limp in comparison.
- 21:15Yeah, yeah. And I think like I felt the same
- 21:18way about para doctors. I do about 5 doctors probably
- 21:22where you're like I'm not sure some of this makes sense.
- 21:24But. I'm so here for it, I'm so here
- 21:27for it. Who cares?
- 21:28I couldn't give a toss. You've got a Janet Fielding
- 21:30going? Yes, I would like to go into the
- 21:32TARDIS, you know. I mean just glorious.
- 21:36Well, well, let's swing us around to Revolution of the
- 21:40Daleks then. You said you hadn't seen this
- 21:42for a while. I certainly hadn't seen this for
- 21:44all. Did you like this on 1st
- 21:45transmission? Yeah, so I, I, I remember loving
- 21:49on 1st transition transmission. So I think like timeless
- 21:55children, right? I I I'm very happy.
- 21:58With it, Why did you sigh before?
- 22:01No, not sigh. Timeless.
- 22:03Because at the time I was sort of unsure as to whether it was a
- 22:08good decision or not. Fair.
- 22:09I couldn't really make my mind up.
- 22:11And I think not the whole concept of it, which I, I'm fine
- 22:13with the concept of it, but just the the level of law that it was
- 22:17going into and creating, I was just like, oh, it's a bit fan
- 22:20wank. Is it, is it, do we really need
- 22:22this? Is this really going to bring in
- 22:24audiences? Are we going to enjoy it?
- 22:25And when it got to Revolution, I sort of thought, oh, great.
- 22:29It's just a straightforward story.
- 22:32It is just a good adventure. It is really cinematic.
- 22:35It's following on from the previous, you know, festive,
- 22:39special, great Dalek story. And it's just a good, good,
- 22:43solid story. And that's all I wanted.
- 22:46And actually now when I was watched it back, I might prefer
- 22:50the Timeless Children possibly because now I've sort of, I've
- 22:56understood that I've made my peace and like when I was
- 22:58watching that originally and all the stuff in Ireland and the
- 23:00baby and falling off a Cliff. And So what the hell is going
- 23:03on? I just want to store.
- 23:05Can I just have a straightforward story please?
- 23:08I mean, I suppose you did get a lot of that in 11, right?
- 23:11They are a lot of those are standalones and, and fairly
- 23:14straightforward morally and creatively.
- 23:18Do you know what? When I watched this earlier, the
- 23:21thing that really stood out for me was I was never really moved
- 23:25by Ryan and Graham's departure when it went out.
- 23:29And I had a tear in my eye when I was watching it today.
- 23:32And I was like, wow, this is really, and do you know what it
- 23:35was? It was the fact that it was so
- 23:36underplayed and so subtle and, and just so like, do you know
- 23:41what? I've had enough.
- 23:42I've decided actually my life's here and I want to look after
- 23:45the people I love. Yeah.
- 23:47And I was like, yeah, that's that for me is a much better
- 23:50exit than oh God. I'm often a diner with some
- 23:53lesbian from the end of time or. Well, like the world is ending
- 23:56and the whole universe is going to end unless I kill myself
- 23:59immediately. To Bill turn into a sideman and
- 24:02then a gay puddle or something. No, I.
- 24:05I mean, I love Bill. I think that that series of with
- 24:08Capaldi is one of the best ones. I love them as a partner.
- 24:10Seen know what he did to her. I know I can't.
- 24:13It's awful. Oh, I don't know what I ever
- 24:16thought it was a good idea to shoot a companion through the
- 24:18stomach so you can then put the camera through the image.
- 24:20The hole was so big the. Camera got through the Cyberman
- 24:24and then like, Oh no, we're not going to solve.
- 24:26There's some kind of puddle thing.
- 24:27We'll solve that in the next bit at the Christmas, whatever.
- 24:29And I'm like, but it's Bill. I love Bill.
- 24:31She's really good. But the other thing that really
- 24:33stood up for me, you want fan wank.
- 24:35I mean, this brings back Jack N character.
- 24:38It Captain Jacks in this. Obviously the Daleks are in
- 24:41this. It's following up from
- 24:42resolution. Like, there's a lot of stuff you
- 24:44sort of need to know before you go in.
- 24:48I think. How does it well?
- 24:49It hands it well and I think there are some little nods in
- 24:52there to previous sort of classic era Dalek stories and
- 24:55various classic stories. I think.
- 24:57I mean, I don't know if they're intentional or not where it's
- 24:58just me reading it into it and a couple of that's.
- 25:01Where I find out how deep you are.
- 25:02Go on. Yeah, no, but you know, there's
- 25:05things like, oh, we'll get into it in a second, but obviously
- 25:08what other story has someone being killed and a Dalek being
- 25:12taken away in a truck remembers the Daleks Ratliff takes away?
- 25:16Oh, you're quite deep there. Yeah, go and keep going.
- 25:19Yeah, yeah. I'm trying to now think of how I
- 25:21can bring the chase into this somehow.
- 25:24We ever shot the Prime Minister before, we probably should have
- 25:27done. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:29I think we have shot the Prime Minister.
- 25:30Well, not shot the Prime Minister, but I suppose Harriet
- 25:34is. She's ex Prime Minister, isn't
- 25:36she? Harriet Jones.
- 25:38Is this Prime Minister supposed to be a take on Theresa May?
- 25:42Is that the idea? I must, it must be a take on
- 25:45Theresa May. The whole idea of the Daleks, of
- 25:48the defence drones being rolled out across the world and then
- 25:51they all come evil and kill every.
- 25:54I mean, that's just delicious, I think.
- 25:56That was great. And I think it's that kind of,
- 25:58it's almost sort of an RTD slight thing where you've got
- 26:00that really familiar imagery of 10 Downing St. and then the
- 26:04Daleks there. I mean it's it's almost sort of
- 26:06Dalek invasion of Earth. Isn't it like seeing the Daleks
- 26:08in London and executing the Prime Minister, which I think in
- 26:122021 quite a lot of people would have been quite yes.
- 26:17Whoever it was, I was punching the air.
- 26:19I mean, that's pure trailer for you, was the bit where she's
- 26:22shot and then the Dalek turns to the camera.
- 26:25She says we're taking over. Yeah.
- 26:27Wonderful stuff. It's almost like Daleks are the
- 26:29masters of Earth, sort of that. But like all the stuff about I,
- 26:33I mean, I thought some of this stuff is actually ongoing, like
- 26:36the stuff that about using the drones for civil unrest and
- 26:39things like that. We've just had a load of riots.
- 26:41I was like, oh, there's there's something to this idea.
- 26:44It's almost a shame. It's sort of wasted just here,
- 26:46but. Yeah, but you forget that I
- 26:48forgot I sort of had a brain fart and I forgot that this was
- 26:51actually filmed before COVID, because in my, in my mind, it
- 26:57was, it was, I was like, oh, it must be a satire on COVID,
- 26:59right? You've got like you've our hero
- 27:02is locked away in confinement. They can only go out for
- 27:06exercise like once a day. You've got dodgy government
- 27:10contracts. You've got broadcast from
- 27:12Downing's point. You've got How did he know?
- 27:14How did he know what was coming? Cells being created that then go
- 27:19across the world and cause, like, a devastating, you know,
- 27:22terrific, devastating thing. So I thought, oh, this must be,
- 27:25like, all. Especially when Jodie's in
- 27:27prison. Yeah.
- 27:28Do you imagine Chris Chipnall has a scrying glass where he can
- 27:31see into the future? He.
- 27:32Can maybe he does. Magic mirror on the wall riot.
- 27:37Yeah, let's make why. Can't you tell us?
- 27:38Why can't you tell us? Yeah, well, yeah, Chris, you
- 27:40could have walked out. Toilet paper.
- 27:42I mean, I, I cannot stress this enough and I always say it and
- 27:45I've had people not criticise me for it, but the, just the fact
- 27:48that that this production team risked bloody death to bring us
- 27:52Doctor Who during COVID. Come on, like.
- 27:55And I mean, one of the things I love, Jodie Ford, you remember
- 27:57that little video she did that she sent me?
- 27:59Shot gorgeous. Yeah.
- 28:01That makes me cry thinking about that.
- 28:02It's just to do that, thinking of kids that would be watching.
- 28:05I mean, I watched it. I was like, all right, Doctor.
- 28:08What did you say at the end? You've got this or something
- 28:10like that. Yeah, yeah, it's so good.
- 28:14She's if there was ever a moment where the doctor was like a
- 28:16symbol for the kids. Yeah, and like, people criticise
- 28:21this era for not having enough hero moments.
- 28:23You're like, come on, come on, There's plenty of hero moments.
- 28:26She literally falls out of the sky in through a train roof.
- 28:31The end of that episode she's there jumping cranes taking a
- 28:35piss out of his name. I mean, at the start of this
- 28:38one, you've, well, it's a flashback to to the previous
- 28:41festive special, but you know, it just it shows.
- 28:44It's just that constant hero moments.
- 28:46For her, I mean, just to make the bit at the end of this where
- 28:49all those Daleks fly into the TARDIS after, I mean, that is
- 28:52just great, that bit. And then she's this old bait and
- 28:55switch there where she's actually a hologram and then.
- 28:59I sound too much like Dylan Reece on this call, but are we
- 29:02sure that Disney didn't fund this era instead of the one to
- 29:06come? It looks so beautiful.
- 29:08It's gorgeous. But probably with not as much
- 29:12money obviously like the just the use of colour, like the
- 29:15blocked colours when you go like the greens, the purples, the
- 29:19Reds, the Blues. Really so gorgeous, gorgeous
- 29:23shots. I don't think it's looked
- 29:24better. When they're in that big way,
- 29:28you know where all the darling mutants are, where they're all
- 29:30being grown, all the colours in there are just great and it just
- 29:33feels vast. Yeah, and some bits where that
- 29:38Leo is talking to Chris Noff and that that is all blue and really
- 29:43dark and they don't go, do you know what?
- 29:44We're going to turn the light up.
- 29:45They just keep it keep it pretty dark.
- 29:48It's Leo, that really delicious man, who grows the Dalek.
- 29:52Yes, that one. So sad when he died, you know?
- 29:54Good grief. Yeah.
- 29:56Doctor didn't save him like he did with the previous.
- 29:58Person who'd been taking over for.
- 29:59Dalek the year before. He likes killing.
- 30:02There was a pretty man in resolution as well, that sort of
- 30:04policeman going on about his digits.
- 30:05Do you remember? Yeah, yeah.
- 30:07Yeah, you know Charlotte, what's her face from Ghosts is dragging
- 30:10him out of the warehouse. I was.
- 30:11Like, yeah. I mean that is 1 great thing
- 30:13about chips and Daleks, right? Unlike Moffit's Daleks, they
- 30:15murder a lot of people. I mean they are bad.
- 30:19Well, I like the fact in this that when they when the defence
- 30:21drone Daleks go bad, they just start indiscriminately murdering
- 30:25people. They're not like stop or please
- 30:28do this or negotiate. They're just like indescribable.
- 30:30Bang Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
- 30:31You see all those people in passport control just handing
- 30:34over their passports and being murdered in disguise.
- 30:37Tower of London just being blasted away.
- 30:39I couldn't believe they shot that there.
- 30:40You can see people falling. I mean, what do people think
- 30:43walking past? Yeah.
- 30:44What's going on over there? Let's start it.
- 30:46Completely. Dying left, right and centre.
- 30:49It's great. And what do you know?
- 30:50Do you know where that bridge is that they shot?
- 30:52You know, and. In Bristol I used to know it.
- 30:55Is Clifton? I did wonder.
- 30:57Oh, that is stunning. Well, look, should we go and
- 30:59watch this thing? All right?
- 31:00I mean, we're, we could wax lyrical before we go in, but we
- 31:03may as well watch it and wax lyrical while we're doing it.
- 31:07Would you do me the greatest of honours then?
- 31:09And count us in five or three seconds, whatever's your fancy.
- 31:13OK, 54321, let's go. We are off Am I so excited doing
- 31:22this with a new person? You know I'm in virgin territory
- 31:25here. I love this Star Wars sort of
- 31:27star. Take the piss though, isn't it?
- 31:31It's like the piss, yeah. He does like his big chunky
- 31:34font. Yeah, and it's the same font, I
- 31:36think. Isn't it across the across flux
- 31:38as well? I, you know, in resolution, I
- 31:43really felt that. I've always loved seconds music,
- 31:46but I really felt it. It went up a notch in that that
- 31:50his Dalek theme is just amazing. It's.
- 31:52Great, but his Dalek and his Cyberman theme are so good do.
- 31:56You think about this sort of junkyard chic Dalek here I.
- 31:59Quite like it. I do quite like it.
- 32:01I mean, I I think I like it better when it's defence drone
- 32:03one. It's a bit sort of blingy with
- 32:05the lights and the whatever. Oh, you like a bit of bling, Do?
- 32:08Yeah. I don't know.
- 32:09A bit of a bit of that. When you're not throwing it off
- 32:12in Tesco, that is. Sorry, that's a niche reference
- 32:15that no one will understand because they weren't at the
- 32:17start of this call. Here we go.
- 32:18Look, there's two people at GCHQ.
- 32:21There is, there is, but one is extremely hot, so we don't mind.
- 32:25Although did you notice, right how many times he sips his
- 32:28bloody tea just to make the point?
- 32:29This is an important plot point, all right.
- 32:32Check off check off teacup. Can I stop for a cup of tea?
- 32:37Because it's you. I wonder if that'll be
- 32:40important. You know, I mean, hang on.
- 32:42So I was trying to think this through because I think it's a
- 32:44good moment where where he gets drugged on the side of the road.
- 32:48But I'm like, so they must be overhearing this conversation,
- 32:51knowing he likes tea and having set up that wagon on the
- 32:55motorway. What if he stops at like Greg's
- 32:58for a sausage roll? They've got everywhere, Like on
- 33:01entire row from Cheltenham to wherever this depository place
- 33:04is. That one must have been like
- 33:05curses. You know, the McDonald's muffin?
- 33:08He stopped for that instead. Yeah, here he is going up the.
- 33:12Road like the idea though of the Dalek.
- 33:14The yeah, The Remains of the Dalek basically kick starting
- 33:18this story. Yeah, I think it's really nice
- 33:20because it's sort of, we haven't really had a festive special
- 33:22before where it sort of carries on from the previous one.
- 33:25So it's quite a nice, interesting idea to pick up from
- 33:27that because if you think you might have casual viewers who
- 33:29watch it at Christmas, I think, oh, I watched that last
- 33:32Christmas. I didn't watch much to the rest
- 33:34of the series, but I'm watching it again.
- 33:35I wonder if. If Chris Noff hadn't been
- 33:39cancelled as spectacularly as he was, if we might have got the
- 33:43third one, it's. My.
- 33:45Love Eva the Darling so much I don't care.
- 33:48Do you I I don't like? It Oh, you're mad.
- 33:51It's my favorite of the three. That's.
- 33:53It. Oh, no.
- 33:54Yeah. Well.
- 33:55Yeah, yeah. We can battle over that one
- 33:57another day, don't you worry. Yeah, no, here he is.
- 34:00He's gonna get poisoned. Oh, he's had a few too many.
- 34:04Few teas too. It's not the rape, no again.
- 34:06Oh God. What's that woman doing in that
- 34:09burger van in laybys to truckers?
- 34:13Who's she working for? Well, I suppose Chris Noff.
- 34:17Now. You make sure you're there on
- 34:21the A42. Slipping the tea 2 sugar.
- 34:26Tits now. I think he's dead.
- 34:30He must be dead, right? He doesn't come back.
- 34:32See. So shoved in the back of there,
- 34:34What happens to him? I.
- 34:35Mean people say Chris, Chris Chibble can't do economic
- 34:38character beats, but I really like the woman just going, oh,
- 34:41how's your mum? And he's like, yeah, yeah, she's
- 34:42all right, don't, don't ask too much.
- 34:44And then there's the picture of her in the car, isn't it?
- 34:46And that's all you need to know that she's she's clearly
- 34:49battling some sort of illness. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:51Which again, because I because this was, you know, during
- 34:53COVID, but they shot it a long time before.
- 34:55I was thinking, oh is it because his mum's is this sort of COVID
- 34:58reference? Do you see the?
- 35:00State of that Dalek. God.
- 35:04Have you ever had a morning like that?
- 35:06I have a few. Probably.
- 35:08What's your tipple, by the way? My tipple.
- 35:11Oh, I've got a little bit of Sauvignon Blanc going on down
- 35:14here. I don't drink at all, actually.
- 35:18That's what I put the BWS out of work.
- 35:20I'm the only one that ain't going to steal it.
- 35:23Lee Haven Joseph. Where do I know that name from?
- 35:26So he did Orphan 55 direct. Banger I.
- 35:32Love it. Danny.
- 35:34Hang on, hang on a bit, right? This is where people are going.
- 35:36Who is this man? Luke Collins don't like Eva the
- 35:39Daleks, but he does like Orphan 55.
- 35:42Well. The only reason I don't like Eva
- 35:43the Daleks is because things a bit creepy, like someone keeping
- 35:46their ex's stuff in a lock up. Oh, they are better not tell you
- 35:50what I've got about this. Place.
- 35:53You don't want to know. You really don't.
- 35:55Oh, no, no, I was joking then. By the way, I assume you love
- 35:59all of this clandestine meetings between Jack Robertson and the
- 36:03Prime Minister. I mean, yeah, Chris Noff, I
- 36:08mean, obviously pretty severe allegations made after this.
- 36:13Yeah, Chip N must have been like, oh, for God's sakes,
- 36:17you're like Paul. RTD East had to contend with
- 36:20Barrowman and Neil Clark. Paul Moffett's had to contend
- 36:24with Neil Gaiman. Yeah, and.
- 36:27Now this now. Yeah.
- 36:29Now this, I mean, it's yeah, You still talk about separating the
- 36:32art from the artist. It's.
- 36:34Can you? It's a.
- 36:35Tough one to do. I don't know.
- 36:37It does put a pretty big stain across this.
- 36:40Like I, I, I have had that discussion quite a few times.
- 36:44Like I'm a massive Buffy fan and I in no way endorse what a bully
- 36:48towards women Joss Whedon clearly was.
- 36:51But I still love Buffy, so it's like I kind of have to separate
- 36:55it because I love that show. And with things like this where
- 36:58it's so many people involved in it, you think you if you sort of
- 37:01cancel it, you're then taking away I suppose every, every
- 37:05actor, every talent in it. The Dalek.
- 37:08Oh, he's sexy. Bastard.
- 37:10A great design, isn't it? You know, there's a few people,
- 37:13you know a few crowds. I wouldn't mind jetting like
- 37:16this and gassing out. Wasn't this?
- 37:20Do you remember Boris Johnson bought those?
- 37:22Do you know he bought those water cannons to use?
- 37:25Is this? Taking the piss out of that.
- 37:27Well, I don't know, maybe it is because this sort of make a big
- 37:30thing about water cannons. I love this where it says about
- 37:32the we're not actually using CS gas.
- 37:35And it's just a demonstration, Brian, that that they they're
- 37:37all willing participants in this.
- 37:39Yeah, I think it's like a it's an exercise they've been paid to
- 37:42turn up and just pretend to be. Be tortured.
- 37:45Be. Tortured.
- 37:46Yeah, OK, I love it. CS gas.
- 37:48And he's like, we're not obviously using CS gas.
- 37:50And Chris Noff says it would have been fun.
- 37:52Don't. Know what I mean it?
- 37:54But you know, I think he is deliciously evil.
- 37:58I mean, he's such a cartoon character, isn't he?
- 38:00And that's my sort of villain who's just in no way plausible,
- 38:04but really fun to watch. I mean, like my favorite villain
- 38:07of all time is Harrison Chase, so.
- 38:10Oh. Do.
- 38:11You like playing in? Your green cathedral.
- 38:13Green Cathedral, Yeah, I love it.
- 38:17Yeah, he is great, Harrison Chase.
- 38:18But like we, I don't know if we get enough recurring sort of
- 38:23slimy villains in the new series.
- 38:24And I was happy to get one that obviously we've got the master
- 38:27that turns up all the time, but that's sort of gets a bit dull
- 38:30after a while. Well, they do love Sasha Duan.
- 38:34I think he is the best, one of the best that we've had.
- 38:37I. Think we've liked Sasha Duan for
- 38:39different reasons, you know? No, no, no.
- 38:42He's a God. He's a very intense actor, isn't
- 38:45he? Like, he's so good.
- 38:47He's he's. Kind of magnificent, Jodie, he's
- 38:49really good. Yeah.
- 38:51We see. We haven't seen Jodie, have we,
- 38:53Apart from the flashbacks. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:55And we're how? How long in?
- 38:57We're nearly 10 minutes in, about 8 minutes in.
- 39:00Yeah, we haven't seen her. I mean, it's obviously it's an
- 39:02extended length, isn't it? This one, it's a.
- 39:05It's a long one. They say, don't they, that she's
- 39:08been in the prison for how many years?
- 39:10Is it quite a long time? Like Jack says he spent like 19
- 39:14years trying to get to the cell next to her.
- 39:17And she's doing terrible crimes, he said.
- 39:19Oh. My God, I don't want.
- 39:22To think about it, let's just assume they were.
- 39:26She says it's been a difficult few decades.
- 39:29OK, but the only reason I think this works and I I really have
- 39:35issues with the 100 billion years or however long he was in
- 39:38that puzzle box for in Evanston punching Diamond, is that she's
- 39:42got stuff to deal with here. So maybe she's not trying to
- 39:45break out of that prison because she's got a lot to think about.
- 39:49Yeah, don't. Yeah, I think that's it because
- 39:51a lot of people say, oh, you know, having having Jack a man
- 39:54break her out, is that bad? She's the doctor.
- 39:58Why can't she break out sooner? But I think it's showing that
- 40:00she's been gone through real trauma.
- 40:02You know, the, the, the, what's going in, the Timeless Children,
- 40:05the stuff she's learned. She's just sort of depressed.
- 40:07She's stuck here. She doesn't want to break out.
- 40:09She could do if she wanted to, but she's probably just
- 40:12processing it all. There's a really great scene
- 40:15later in the episode between her and Ryan.
- 40:17It's basically her goodbye scene with Ryan because it's a group
- 40:21scene at the end where she tries to fob off what she's been
- 40:25through at the time as children. And he says, no, you're going to
- 40:27tell me about it. And it it really is weighing on
- 40:30her. So even though she's had all of
- 40:31this time, she hasn't quite come to terms with any of you.
- 40:35I love this prison stuff. It's shot so beautifully in the
- 40:39I think it looks great as well. I love her hair in this and the
- 40:41the outfit I think is brilliant. And then all the little Easter
- 40:44eggs you get in here. So good it it.
- 40:47Does feel like when she goes into the room with all the cages
- 40:50it looks huge. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:54But again, like I again, I misremembered thinking that this
- 40:57was shot during lockdown because I thought this must be some kind
- 41:00of satire on lockdown. That face that she's got, she's
- 41:03looking out the window. That is literally my face for
- 41:05about two years ago. Well, I can go out from going
- 41:09for a run. I'm.
- 41:10Working retail or I was still working out?
- 41:12I bet you. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:14No, actually, I was probably my saving grace, actually getting
- 41:16out every day. Did you see in that longshot
- 41:19there, what was that bristling sort of huge?
- 41:22Green thing. What is that?
- 41:25I paused it earlier on that look and you're like, all right, the
- 41:27nude. There's a pating.
- 41:29There's a sicker axe. I love the pating.
- 41:31I love the. Pating.
- 41:33So good. You'd think he'd be able to eat
- 41:35the whole prison really, wouldn't you?
- 41:36Yeah. Surely you can just eat through
- 41:37everything. Yeah.
- 41:39Oh, and then she reads herself a little bedtime story.
- 41:42Oh. Gee, obviously many things about
- 41:44this episode have not aged. I know it's not aged well if
- 41:47they. Really.
- 41:49Unless you're a huge fan of JK Rowling, of course, in which
- 41:51cases you'd be delighted to hear that the doctor makes herself
- 41:54Harry Potter to sleep. No, I don't think so.
- 41:58Yeah, look. I was never a fan of Harry
- 41:59Potter before all of this other nonsense.
- 42:04It's hard because like my son's quite likes it and it's it's
- 42:10really hard thing to sort of separate again the art from the
- 42:12artist because I just don't really care for it or her views,
- 42:17obviously. But yeah, something about to.
- 42:20Come to it, it is tricky isn't it?
- 42:22And I think increasingly so because there are social media
- 42:27means we are more Privy to creators thoughts and opinions
- 42:32than ever before. And I think it's really hard
- 42:34that musicians, you know, Nicki Minaj recently standing there
- 42:38next to Trump, go in with. The gold trump gold card.
- 42:41He's hit. Yeah.
- 42:42And immigrants saying, oh, it's all right, you know, that the
- 42:44immigrants are being separated from their kids.
- 42:46That's fine. What?
- 42:49Yeah. I mean, I I know people that
- 42:51listened to her music. They were just appalled.
- 42:53Yeah, yeah. Oh, look at this.
- 42:56It could. It's like Brookside close in it
- 42:58that they've got. I know what.
- 42:59Were they thinking of when they're all the people in that
- 43:01close? Thinking of when suddenly this
- 43:02house turned up and do you remember at the end of the time
- 43:05as children there are those two sort of cyber war refugees who.
- 43:09Oh yes, the one that Graham was floating with.
- 43:12Where do they go? Somewhere in the 21st century on
- 43:16Earth. Not Judy Graham playing her.
- 43:18You know, she'd be on white. Yeah, She'd get a lot of work.
- 43:21She's probably an actress now. You know, she might play Ruby
- 43:23White in The Sarah Jane Adventures.
- 43:25You never know. Yeah.
- 43:28Oh, such a gorgeous design though, that Tardis as.
- 43:30Soon as you see those roundels, you know.
- 43:33I mean, I like Jodie Sardis. I'm not too sure about those
- 43:36enormous penises that come down and attack her every time.
- 43:38Hello though. It's sort of the big OH.
- 43:40You like enormous penises, do you?
- 43:41He. Doesn't I do like this sort of,
- 43:47it's sort of retro back to Hartnell, but it's not quite.
- 43:51It's sort of what you might remember it that being.
- 43:54What do you think is happening with Yasir?
- 43:58I think she's been a detective, you know, maybe that's what
- 44:01she's reverted to. She's, she's a copper by trade.
- 44:04So maybe she's doing what she knows how and she's just trying
- 44:06to work it out. I mean, if I was her and I had a
- 44:09TARDIS, an infinite sized TARDIS to be in, I might just live in
- 44:14there and be happy. I mean, she, they seem to imply
- 44:18that she's sleeping there on the floor, which means I think it's
- 44:22gone beyond detective. So I think she's in love with
- 44:25the doctor and she will keep working until she gets her back.
- 44:29There's a, a scene in The Haunting of Villa Deodata, which
- 44:32is what, 3 episodes back, where Yasi's talking about someone
- 44:35special in her life that she has strong feelings for.
- 44:40And I think that and then this and then obviously we go into
- 44:44flux and it all. Blossoms.
- 44:45Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Suppose if you're her, you
- 44:48don't, you know, we're like, oh, she's been gone 10 months.
- 44:51That's not that long. If you're her and you think
- 44:53she's never coming back, potentially you might have lost
- 44:56her forever. This is a gorgeous shot.
- 44:58The shot in the woods, in the forest.
- 45:00Yes, secret meetings in the woods.
- 45:03That long shot back with the lights on the side just looks
- 45:06beautiful. You've had any secret meetings
- 45:08in the woods, Luke? I'd be so lucky.
- 45:13Grinder, You know it's all the woods these days.
- 45:15Well, everyone's married, you know.
- 45:17Oh, sorry. I lost my wedding ring, where
- 45:20does Lucy? In the woods.
- 45:22She ain't going to listen to this is she?
- 45:25Bloody hoped off hope. Yeah, me too.
- 45:28I've already got enough wives coming after me, you know when
- 45:31these things go out. But though I also like as well
- 45:36that there is an entire plot going on here, away from the
- 45:39Doctor and away from the companions, that sort of builds
- 45:42and builds and builds. I mean, it's slightly the
- 45:47obviously the Joe character here, the Prime Minister is the
- 45:51only person we see from the government or any of that at
- 45:54all. Like I, I sort of they're really
- 45:57economical with the cast. If you think about it, if you go
- 45:59beyond the kind of the the regulars and Jack, then there's
- 46:04not that many other people. But like, people are expensive,
- 46:07aren't they? I think, you know, lots of
- 46:10speaking bars, it's really expensive and they're just
- 46:12putting the money in other places.
- 46:14What he wants at the end of this, he wants huge scale with
- 46:17two lots of Daleks fighting each other.
- 46:20Boy, does he give it to us. So good.
- 46:24Yeah. So Kristenoff is basically just
- 46:27on his own. There's.
- 46:29Suddenly some people with guns turn up, but then they just walk
- 46:34away. I mean, I don't want to pick it
- 46:36too much but but it's just only you know.
- 46:39God, I'm getting look at these guns on the streets.
- 46:41I'm getting ice new flashbacks. Sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 46:46That's horrific. Isn't it just horrific?
- 46:49Not. Yeah.
- 46:51Whoever said that they should be allowed to carry guns in
- 46:55America, well, they need shooting, frankly.
- 46:58You do think like, how are they carrying guns here in England?
- 47:03Well, it's a very rich man, you know, It'll make the problems go
- 47:06away. Yeah.
- 47:07Yeah. So they've got, hang on, they're
- 47:09going. We've got no TARDIS.
- 47:10We've got no Doctor. I love that when Graham goes to
- 47:13Tardis, isn't it? Do you know?
- 47:17I thought that was Sharda when I first watched it.
- 47:19I know I do as well. Well they don't say confirm or
- 47:22deny otherwise do they? So in my mind it is Sharda
- 47:25because the Judoon who the Judoon working for, are they
- 47:27working for the time laws for division, are they?
- 47:30Sally Avon, I believe the great Time Lord war cream.
- 47:34Otherwise. Owners.
- 47:35Professor Cronotis. Yeah.
- 47:38What's she eating there? Did you see that?
- 47:40Looked like a bit of Mississippi mud pie.
- 47:43That's isn't it like a bit of chocolate brownies?
- 47:44So it's like a random brown. Cube Do you like chocolate?
- 47:47Brownies. I do love chocolate brownies.
- 47:50Me too. Oh.
- 47:52You got excited about something then?
- 47:53Oh, yes, Jack, there's less, there's less.
- 47:58I think there are less problematic things with John
- 48:00Barrowman, but enough of a problem that you still wince a
- 48:05bit when you're watching it going, oh OK.
- 48:08Two, but as soon as you came on I did almost sort of punch the
- 48:12air because it it just lifts immediately.
- 48:14It gets really exciting. I mean, well, there's slightly
- 48:17you know, isn't he meant to be in the cell next to us?
- 48:20I don't know why I was to find her here with his whatever this
- 48:23ball thing is, but. Who cares?
- 48:26They walk through all the walls in a massive bubble.
- 48:30Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:31Well, suddenly now she's being the doctor again, you know,
- 48:33quipping. Running.
- 48:34Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And sometimes it's, I'm
- 48:38thinking, are these lines directed at Captain Jack or are
- 48:42they directed at John Barrowman? It's like, what about the
- 48:44surgery and things? Yeah, there was a great bit
- 48:49actually. I I just howled when Yas when
- 48:52it's not your needy. What does she say you need a?
- 48:54Lot of yeah, yeah, yeah, it is. You need a lot of them, right?
- 48:58That is not aimed at Jack Harkness, all right.
- 49:00No, exactly. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:03I'll bucker it that you do know we're out.
- 49:05Let's go. Yeah, How did you smuggle that
- 49:07in here? Do you really want to answer
- 49:09that? I've got a little look she gets.
- 49:15I don't even want to think about it.
- 49:17And that's me saying that. I mean, you already pulled that
- 49:20that laser out of his ass in great.
- 49:24I mean, he must have been douching, right?
- 49:26It was very clean. Sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 49:30You knew what you were getting into, right?
- 49:32Coming into. This.
- 49:33Yeah, yeah, but a bit of Pulp Fiction with crystal Walk on
- 49:35these sticks. I step that watch up my ass.
- 49:39Quiet mood. Is this where Leo goes?
- 49:44Yes, I've had a bit of a sideline in Dalek Mutants.
- 49:49Yeah, yeah. And he has to go Disney for
- 49:55being too clever. And he says that's why people
- 49:57don't like experts, which is I think Michael Gove said that.
- 50:01Oh. Really.
- 50:02And it become like a a phrase that was, you know, we don't
- 50:05like experts. I think we do quite like
- 50:07experts. I hear a lot of people say that
- 50:10chippers can't really do political satire.
- 50:12I just think he's more subtle about it than yeah, yeah, you
- 50:16know, than the big fat windbags in Downing St., in Odeons, in
- 50:20London. Yeah.
- 50:21I mean, I do find that fun as well, but obviously there's
- 50:26obviously slightly more subtleness here.
- 50:28Who this? I scraped away this bit of
- 50:31residue, right? And then I just had to cultivate
- 50:35it and and grow it and look what I've got.
- 50:38Yeah, it's beautiful thing. The second that started growing,
- 50:41I'll be like no, no. Burn it.
- 50:44Kill it with fire immediately. The scene that I thought was
- 50:46really strong was when he takes it down to the incinerator and I
- 50:52thought actually. Felt sympathetic.
- 50:54Yeah, I was like. Please don't.
- 50:56Burn that bloody thing. Now, I love the scenes here
- 50:59where it's the blue and it's dark and you can almost not see
- 51:02their faces. It's shot so beautifully in the
- 51:04red in the background. It's just so beautifully done
- 51:08and I think it's probably quite cost effective because you're
- 51:10just lighting it with colours, but it's gorgeous.
- 51:13One of my big criticisms of RTD 2 was that the contrast just
- 51:19went up on everything. Everything was so bright.
- 51:21Like we were talking before about the Time Hotel episode.
- 51:25It's so bright, there's no atmosphere in it at all.
- 51:27Look. Remember that moment where sort
- 51:30of from RTD we started to get to like Matt Smith and they started
- 51:33to turn the lights down? It's.
- 51:35Quite nice now with this shot here.
- 51:38It's beautiful with the blue and the red around it.
- 51:41You know the the trouble with when you got to Capaldi is they
- 51:45they found filters. Suddenly everything was going
- 51:47through ugly blue, brown, grey filters.
- 51:51I was like, Oh yeah, yeah. Whereas these are lit very
- 51:54cinematically, aren't they? It's all lighting sources within
- 51:57the set. Yeah, it's gorgeous.
- 51:59It's really useful. And that sort of face huggery
- 52:03Dalek again back, which I just, it's so good that he's found
- 52:07something new to do with something that is, you know,
- 52:10from 1963 that he's come up with a chip more effectively to do
- 52:14something that is the body horror, the kind of the
- 52:16possession, a whole new thing to make Daleks scary again
- 52:19effectively. In in revolution revolution.
- 52:23I always it's not. Revolution.
- 52:25The first one not evolution, not.
- 52:28Not Eve, no. In the last Dalek episode, when
- 52:34of course I'm Charlotte, Richie was that first scene when you
- 52:37see the tentacles going over and then music rising and Nick
- 52:41Briggs is doing a really sinister to my voice.
- 52:44Horrible. I was like, Chibis, you've got
- 52:46it. You just got.
- 52:47It just got it, and in this the guy plays Leo, I think does a
- 52:51really good job when he's possessed the sort of little
- 52:53flicker of the eyelids and the slightly different sort of
- 52:56mannerisms. This is horrible.
- 52:59It's horrible. He's going to kill it.
- 53:00He's basically, he's grown this thing and then it just grabs
- 53:03him. You deserve this, Leo.
- 53:05All right. Yeah.
- 53:08Oh, now I'm going to give you 15,000,000 points if you can
- 53:12tell me the line that he says to his wife.
- 53:15Oh, kiss the children for me. You know some of them.
- 53:18I love them. What's that from?
- 53:19From Classic Who? Under fear.
- 53:22Oh, 50 million points for that man.
- 53:24It's so good that the director in Hand of fear gives that
- 53:27amazing speech where he's like, Yep, I'll be.
- 53:30Hoped you may have You may have turned your back on Doctor Who
- 53:33for a sizeable period of time, but it never left you at all,
- 53:37really. Never left me.
- 53:38No, it's so good. It's so good.
- 53:41This it is. I don't know whether it's a
- 53:42direct call back to it, but it has the same kind of.
- 53:45It's, it's doing the same thing, isn't it?
- 53:47It's, well, I mean he's not taken over by a dog like In Hand
- 53:50of Fear, but God that Muir is so gross.
- 53:53So gross with his sort of legs around him.
- 53:55Well, it's it's like the body sort of pulses I.
- 53:59Really like the TARDIS lit like this now where the where it's
- 54:02sort of not on that kind of like dark blue light.
- 54:06It's really nice. I kind of like that.
- 54:07I felt that as time went on they just figured out how to light it
- 54:11better and better. Initially it was a bit tricky
- 54:14and they didn't really know how to shoot it either.
- 54:16When you got to stuff like do you remember the when it was
- 54:19some different colours in Can You Hear Me?
- 54:22Really atmospheric Blues and Reds?
- 54:24I did. Really like remember when she
- 54:26first walks into it in the Ghost monument?
- 54:28It's like a lovely shop. It's it's sort of hazy shot and
- 54:32it's dark in the background you haven't yet seen and she wanders
- 54:34in. It's it's like a really
- 54:36cinematic, beautiful, beautiful show.
- 54:38I don't. I think as Tardises go, I don't
- 54:43know whether I I think I like, I really like it, but I don't know
- 54:46they love it. But I definitely don't hate it.
- 54:49What's your favorite then? Favorite.
- 54:51I did quite like, yeah. I do, that's probably my
- 54:54favorite. It's the new series.
- 54:56But the new series, yeah. I know.
- 54:58I'm not sure I can top that very first one.
- 55:00You know, when they go in an hour for the child.
- 55:02I just think I know. It's so.
- 55:03Big. It's well northless.
- 55:06Or it's just like a photographic projection on the wall.
- 55:09Underground Williams era. We're in a cupboard and a black
- 55:11cupboard, you know, with a safe in it.
- 55:14Yeah, or you get to like Cartmel and we're just not going to use
- 55:17it at all. Can.
- 55:18You imagine that vapor is coming out of that.
- 55:20Is it sort of like a a humidifier on the console do?
- 55:23You like vaping? Cherry bait.
- 55:27Oh, we both said cherry. OK.
- 55:29Oh. Delicious flavour.
- 55:32Yeah, he deserves a few cherry chapsticks in my time.
- 55:36So Jack here is in his prison overalls and then the next scene
- 55:39is in his Jack Captain Jack costume.
- 55:42Yeah, he nicked off to the to the wardrobe room from the
- 55:46Christmas Invasion. Yeah, and he just left a spare
- 55:48coat in there maybe. Oh, do you remember the preview
- 55:52for this in Doctor Room magazine?
- 55:54All chippers gave them. Was this picture of the three of
- 55:56their members table. I was.
- 55:57Like boring. I mean, Chris, come on, you had
- 56:02so many images, you could have given them from this.
- 56:05Like from the prison or all those.
- 56:06I tell you what though, this scene, I loved it.
- 56:08Like when I was a kid, I used to dream of this.
- 56:11What landing in your would? Come and you know, land in the
- 56:13front room. God yeah, a lovely just
- 56:16literally get up off your sofa and go and have adventures.
- 56:18Yeah, yeah, Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:20It's so good. And I love seeing it in in like
- 56:22a domestic setting like this. It's so when it lands.
- 56:26You look at all this lens flare, they got rid of this pretty
- 56:28quickly. It irritates me greatly.
- 56:31It's, I know it's really sort of digital and not real.
- 56:35JJ Abrams Star Trek movies have got a lot to answer for I.
- 56:39Know it went out favour quite quickly I love what he said
- 56:43Graham he says hello silver fox it's.
- 56:46A slight moment of gay panic there on his face.
- 56:48You know, only a little bit. Yeah, I don't know if he's sort
- 56:51of maybe going to go with it, but.
- 56:53Yeah, it's shovering the doctor. She is livid.
- 56:56That's. What my cats are like if I go
- 56:58away for a weekend, I. Didn't need for two days.
- 57:05Yeah. Oh dear.
- 57:08I love this team, though I really don't.
- 57:10Well, I mean, I love Dan as well, but.
- 57:13Yeah, I don't know, like. A little family.
- 57:16Yeah, it felt like a little family.
- 57:17You can imagine them recording all this together, starting
- 57:19together. It's really good.
- 57:22They're so, yeah, I do love them.
- 57:25And I don't, you know what? I think some people sort of
- 57:27slightly worry that that Jack is a bit crowbarred into this, but
- 57:30I quite like it. And I quite like the diamond
- 57:32when he comes into it. Well, because I think Yas is
- 57:35going through stuff here, so the chat that they have in Japan
- 57:39where he says to her, it's a really well scripted, if I ever
- 57:43said one huge favourable thing about Chris Schipnall is those
- 57:47one-on-one dialogue moments, the character moments, he can
- 57:51absolutely ace those. Some people not, I know some
- 57:54people aren't too on them, but I like them.
- 57:56I think gives the time room to breathe.
- 57:59People like very operatic characterisation in the new
- 58:02series, don't they? And this is all a bit more.
- 58:06Yeah, I love when he walks in this green thing.
- 58:09You can hear a little noise in the background.
- 58:11It's exactly like in Genesis where Tom looks through that
- 58:13little green window and the little noises it sounds.
- 58:17I don't know whether they used the same one or not.
- 58:19Look at the. Size of this?
- 58:20Plane. Now is this a an enormous space
- 58:25that they filmed in or BA judicious use of CGII?
- 58:30Think CGII. Think so, but it looks, I mean,
- 58:33compare it to when they did something similar in New Earth
- 58:37with all those booths. Yeah, we've come so far.
- 58:40Come all the way. Oh, I do love that as well.
- 58:45It's just a bit where she goes, yes, we're going to go nuclear
- 58:48now and I've got a quite a good plan.
- 58:52Oh, is it later? I bloody love that bit.
- 58:55And then what? You're going to bring a load of
- 58:57Daleks. That is where Jack mentions
- 58:59Rose. Well, yes.
- 59:02And he goes, Oh yeah, I can't die.
- 59:05I'm not sure why he had to mention that she was in a
- 59:07parallel universe like. Yeah.
- 59:11All right, Mr. Wiki. Yeah, it's full of exposition.
- 59:17Well, I like how that he quite likes yes, doesn't he?
- 59:19I think he sort of takes a shine to her in this, the character.
- 59:23Oh, Jack, yeah, yeah, I mean, and Ryan's there.
- 59:26What's he doing, Ryan? He's very pretty.
- 59:31Has he got on to have a career? I know Mandy Gill's just done a
- 59:35good BBC comedy. Yeah, I think he has done a few
- 59:38things tossing Cole. I think he's sort of having a
- 59:41look. He's Wikipedia earlier and he
- 59:42has done some stuff because I think there's a Is there a bit
- 59:45in this? You never had the beautiful
- 59:46conversation together later on. I think that might have been a
- 59:49reshoot. He.
- 59:52Was doing something else at the time, which is why he's wearing
- 59:54that beanie hat. I just adore the fact that his
- 59:59last shot is him falling off the bike on that hill and.
- 1:00:01Why couldn't they let him ride I?
- 1:00:04Was laughing my head off. Oh so you love it?
- 1:00:08Every time he sees him, he goes oh, not you guys again.
- 1:00:15No, I haven't quite got my head around 3D printing.
- 1:00:18Perhaps you could give me a crash course now on the?
- 1:00:20I don't think I have either. It's sort of, I don't not sure
- 1:00:24you can. Can you 3D print something this
- 1:00:26big? It looks like, well, they've got
- 1:00:29these dialects laid out like it's some kind of Doctor Who fan
- 1:00:33sort of event with a little bit of tape around them, like, oh,
- 1:00:36have a look at this. Now I'm going to sound like a
- 1:00:38real Simpson Luke, so apologies. Is it making things out of
- 1:00:41lasers? No.
- 1:00:44OK, I. Think it's like a very thin
- 1:00:45little string of plastic which is sort of like laid down fine
- 1:00:50layer I think I think. Well, there you go.
- 1:00:53Keep saying they're empty here and I think, weren't these
- 1:00:55actually actually empty like these versions were remote
- 1:00:58control? I think, I think they did the
- 1:01:01sort of the test with the previous Dalek story because
- 1:01:05that didn't have anyone in it either and it went so well.
- 1:01:07They were like, Riot, let's have an army.
- 1:01:09Yeah, slightly unfair if you're a dialogue operator.
- 1:01:14Oh, and there was a really economic bit of back story as
- 1:01:19well where he says to the Prime Minister, oh, all of my car
- 1:01:24factories that got shut down. Now we've found a good use for
- 1:01:28all of the equipment. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:30Which again, another, another bit of satire because I think
- 1:01:32wasn't it like the Sunderland Nissan plant or whatever was
- 1:01:34going on at the time? I think there was something
- 1:01:35going on. OK, yeah, at the time.
- 1:01:38What's going on? Here we go.
- 1:01:39This. Is the great?
- 1:01:42I think it's great. Like he hasn't only had a
- 1:01:43facelift, has he? He's also had an acting
- 1:01:45transplant as well. I think in this John Barrowman.
- 1:01:48Maybe it's just the writing, like as Jim has written for him
- 1:01:52before. I don't.
- 1:01:52He hasn't. Yeah, I suppose.
- 1:01:53Torchwood. Oh.
- 1:01:55Of course he has. Yeah, he wrote Cyberwoman,
- 1:01:58didn't he? And day one.
- 1:01:59Best episode ever. That's that's sarcasm.
- 1:02:03That's sarcasm, by the way. I could still remember the night
- 1:02:06that went out. I've just.
- 1:02:07Gone the whole thing from. Coming.
- 1:02:10I went let's me done and I haven't really watched Torture
- 1:02:12since. Then, but really, you know what?
- 1:02:14Mid season he wrote one called countryside, which was about a
- 1:02:16load of cannibals out in the in the countryside.
- 1:02:19Fucking terrifying. It was the best horror they did.
- 1:02:24So he's he's hit and miss, but when are you here?
- 1:02:28Yeah, there is AI mean. I really love this acting out.
- 1:02:31He's a really nice scene. But there is something like
- 1:02:33Jackson says, you don't get to choose when the doctor leaves
- 1:02:37and you think, well, Ryan and Greg are literally about to do
- 1:02:39that at the end of the episodes. She was about the end.
- 1:02:44Yeah, you was wrong, Jack. I do love, though, that he says
- 1:02:47to her. Do you know what I mean?
- 1:02:50How many people are there? And we're the lucky ones.
- 1:02:52We're the ones to get to travel with the Doctor.
- 1:02:54And you don't really think about it that way.
- 1:02:55Do you think anyone could be a companion?
- 1:02:57Actually, there's only about 60 of them.
- 1:02:59Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:01And again, it's some of these things you sort of think, are
- 1:03:03you saying this to the character or to the actor?
- 1:03:07Yes. Yeah, yeah, but Mandib's no
- 1:03:11slouch. No.
- 1:03:13She's so good. She is really good.
- 1:03:16I I think she when she's in situations where she has to be
- 1:03:21fearful, there's scenes in the flux season.
- 1:03:25God Village of the Angels and Aneva the Daleks, where she just
- 1:03:29has to with like a single tear and she's shaking.
- 1:03:33I I think she's compelling to watch, man and girl.
- 1:03:36A little bit like sort of the way Elizabeth Sladen could do,
- 1:03:39yeah, terror, but also bravery at the same time.
- 1:03:44And she can do comedy as well. Do you remember when they were
- 1:03:46coming in on those rope pulleys in flocks?
- 1:03:50Hello, so I'm guessing that this isn't Japan in real life but.
- 1:03:58I know this is Cardiff, the only one that gives me a slight sort
- 1:04:01of suspension of disbelief issue.
- 1:04:05Maybe because it looks a little bit like the building around the
- 1:04:07corner from where Chris Noth is. Oh, it's around the corner to
- 1:04:12fill the reason. For that, you know, oh, do you
- 1:04:14know who's the square in the scun?
- 1:04:16Square in the scun. I love.
- 1:04:17This. I love the fact she's not
- 1:04:18impressed either. She's like, all right, whatever.
- 1:04:21You need a lot, Do I? Do you not remember when this
- 1:04:26went out? Barrowman was all over his
- 1:04:28social media, right? Filming himself watching the
- 1:04:31episode start? Yes, I'm back on the TV again.
- 1:04:34It. Was meant to be a bit of a
- 1:04:36surprise, wasn't it? But he was basically all over
- 1:04:38his social media going here I am.
- 1:04:42Are you? Are you feeling insecure because
- 1:04:44you seem to need a lot of praise?
- 1:04:46I have a sneaky suspicion, because I think Moffett was very
- 1:04:50savvy behind the scenes, that he knew what was coming.
- 1:04:55I think there was a reason why Moffett didn't hire him.
- 1:04:58He should have just tipped Chris the wink and went.
- 1:05:01There's a shitstorm coming, all right?
- 1:05:03Yeah, also we've got the Prime Minister at the front of Downing
- 1:05:06St., which is something we sort of we've got a bit, well, not
- 1:05:09outside Downing St. We've got a bit used to during
- 1:05:11lockdown, a lot of prime ministerial broadcasts.
- 1:05:14What do you imagine this is just a sort of facade they built in
- 1:05:16the studio? Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:05:19Or whether it's because there are sort of a couple of number
- 1:05:2210s they use, don't they, I think.
- 1:05:24Would you mind, Boris, if we just shot there with a few
- 1:05:27Daleks? We're going to be at the Tower
- 1:05:29of London next week, so we could just come round and.
- 1:05:34But she's great. Do you know?
- 1:05:35So Harriet Walter the The Who plays Joe here?
- 1:05:38Apparently her uncle is Christopher Lee.
- 1:05:42Really. Oh my God, I'm going to have a
- 1:05:44look now and see. I can see.
- 1:05:46I mean, it's a great performance.
- 1:05:48She's not sort of gnashing the scenery like Chris.
- 1:05:52Not so it's a, it's a different sort of villainy.
- 1:05:56She just wants to be in charge. Doesn't she quietly annoyed that
- 1:05:59he gets a trip in the TARDIS? That feels like something that
- 1:06:01should be, you know, reserved for your favorite characters
- 1:06:04rather than Chris Noff. I fucking love the ending
- 1:06:08though, where he goes yes I, you know, put myself out there to
- 1:06:11defeat the Daleks. Everybody please give me a
- 1:06:14knighthood. What a twat I.
- 1:06:18Know. Oh, this was a great speech.
- 1:06:20Daleks are insidious and clever. Like hate, they'll spread until
- 1:06:25they can't be stopped. This is it.
- 1:06:29Here's our clickbait scene. Yeah, the exterminating the
- 1:06:32Prime Minister. I mean, how many prime ministers
- 1:06:34were we killed in Doctor Who? Probably quite a few.
- 1:06:37He was killed in Aliens of London, wasn't he?
- 1:06:39They found him hanging up in the cupboard.
- 1:06:41Yeah, and I suppose the master is Harold Saxon.
- 1:06:46Oh yeah, he got shot. Maybe.
- 1:06:47Yeah. This is probably the most public
- 1:06:52execution though. Yes, yeah, on live TV, as it
- 1:06:55says on the screen. Live at Downing St. on the BBC.
- 1:06:58You mentioned the papers, the next slide, defence stones.
- 1:07:03Attack. Little flashback here, maybe to
- 1:07:07the planet net cross feeding, dead bodies being turned.
- 1:07:14That's grizzly as well, isn't it?
- 1:07:15I mean, the Daleks in Shipnell's time are, if you'll forgive me,
- 1:07:20fuckers, aren't they? I mean, they're horrible.
- 1:07:23And scary for the first time in years.
- 1:07:26As they should be. I mean this.
- 1:07:28Like here with this creeping dark like.
- 1:07:33Imagine being a 5 year old watching this look behind you.
- 1:07:37On New Year's Day. Starting the new year, face
- 1:07:42huggers, come on. Well, supposed to be the first
- 1:07:47time I've had face huggers in the Christmas or festive
- 1:07:49special. This is gripe Beam.
- 1:07:51She goes to get it off and look, he's on her back.
- 1:07:53God Almighty. Doesn't doesn't take them over.
- 1:07:59Maybe they're sort of, I don't know, dormant or something at
- 1:08:02that stage. They're not fully developed
- 1:08:03maybe. Oh, Luke, I love them.
- 1:08:06That's. So good.
- 1:08:08Crazy. Shot there.
- 1:08:10Was you talking about last Christmas there when you said
- 1:08:13face huggers? Yes, yeah, that was a good
- 1:08:16episode. That was good, Yeah.
- 1:08:20So Prime Minister, going to be. Done.
- 1:08:22Love that once they all start going bad and killing people she
- 1:08:25still tries to bluff it. That's she, Yes.
- 1:08:28It's all right, don't worry. Technical issues, you know.
- 1:08:32I love the fact that they just indiscriminately kill people.
- 1:08:35It's properly evil. They don't just, they don't sort
- 1:08:37of go negotiate with people. They're just, we're going to
- 1:08:40exterminate anyone and everything.
- 1:08:43Esprit and I like the fact as well that we think of them as
- 1:08:46the Daleks and then the gold Daleks turn up and then they're
- 1:08:52just impurities to be swept aside, these things.
- 1:08:56Yeah, a bit like Remembrance again, the whole sort of Dalek
- 1:08:58Civil War and you. Are so deep at this point, Luke.
- 1:09:05Or that lovely scene with Ryan, I think.
- 1:09:08Actually, her hair is a different length.
- 1:09:10Yeah. I think this is a reshoot
- 1:09:12possibly because they did like a test shoot during COVID, I think
- 1:09:16to see whether they could do it safely.
- 1:09:19And I think maybe this was it. So this was a little bit after
- 1:09:21as I think, I don't know if certain, but yeah, look at how
- 1:09:25it's different, isn't it? It's longer.
- 1:09:26Really pleased that you have this moment though.
- 1:09:30And again, it's just a quiet, gentle character scene, but
- 1:09:33where he goes basically, you know, I've had ten months at
- 1:09:35home. It's all established here now,
- 1:09:38Yeah. I've sort of made peace with my
- 1:09:40dad, although it does remind me a little bit of, you know, it
- 1:09:45might keep her track And oligopolis with Matthew
- 1:09:47Waterhouse and Tom Baker. Go on.
- 1:09:51Sort of just the fact that those characters have been that
- 1:09:53conversation, you wouldn't usually have those characters
- 1:09:56together and you get those. Oh, I see what you mean.
- 1:09:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a bit weird that it's those
- 1:10:01two, yeah. You don't often get many scenes
- 1:10:04where it's just Ryan and the Doctor, no.
- 1:10:06But because he's going like it's kind of necessary.
- 1:10:10I just like that he calls her out.
- 1:10:11He goes, no, no, no, we ain't. We ain't pushing this to the
- 1:10:14side. That's what you always do.
- 1:10:15Tell me what happens. It's strange that you don't get
- 1:10:19sort of any extra with Graham though.
- 1:10:21Although she does have a lot of moments for Graham like in.
- 1:10:24Those two seasons previously, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:26Bloody love, Graham, you know, Yeah.
- 1:10:28He's so good. Those ridiculous laser shoes.
- 1:10:32Yes. But then it's something like
- 1:10:36Punjab where he has to get Prem ready for the wedding and
- 1:10:41knowing that he's going to die that day and he, God, he breaks
- 1:10:44my heart. Bradley.
- 1:10:45Walsh do that kind of humour and then the seriousness at the same
- 1:10:48time and then ingladiated as well.
- 1:10:51So, you know Chase. The chase, yeah, I was always
- 1:10:57hoping it was the woman. You know when they show you who
- 1:10:59it is, so the. Chase, What was her?
- 1:11:01Name. Oh, she was fabulous.
- 1:11:06Now, is this the first time that so the conversation they're
- 1:11:08having, is this the first time she's opened up about the fact
- 1:11:11that she's not who she thought she was?
- 1:11:14I think so, yeah. Because she didn't see any of
- 1:11:17them after that in the topless children.
- 1:11:19No. And she hasn't done it yet.
- 1:11:20She. So it's sort of quite special, I
- 1:11:23suppose, that she does open up to Ryan.
- 1:11:26I just don't buy it when people say, like, she can't do some
- 1:11:30serious acting or that she wasn't given any opportunities.
- 1:11:33She was given plenty of opportunities.
- 1:11:38I mean, it would be a bit of a rug pull, right, if you found
- 1:11:40out that, I mean, if you come to terms with it now, you certainly
- 1:11:42were a bit out of shore at the time.
- 1:11:44The whole time, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:46Only because it just felt like such a lot of new law to be
- 1:11:51created and sort of dumped. I just want to enjoy a good
- 1:11:53story. But I think now I, yeah,
- 1:11:56definitely come to terms with it now.
- 1:11:58I, I like to think that the three biggies, you know, Davies,
- 1:12:01Moffett and Chipnall, they all had their turn and they all
- 1:12:03wanted to leave their stamp. So RCD wiped out Gallifrey and
- 1:12:10then Moffett was like, well, I'm going to insert in a Doctor that
- 1:12:12you never knew about. And then Chip was like, why?
- 1:12:16I'm going to rewrite the beginning of Doctor Who
- 1:12:19completely. I mean, you could just see Ian
- 1:12:22Levine getting more incandescent with every twist, can't you?
- 1:12:25You could. Just redo it with AI.
- 1:12:29Oh, have you seen him? Oh boy.
- 1:12:32No, no, you're too nice to say too.
- 1:12:35Nice, too nice. I'll be the pitcher, don't you
- 1:12:39want? But I like the fact that it's
- 1:12:44Ryan that sort of tells her to like, you are the doctor
- 1:12:47basically. But throughout this
- 1:12:49conversation, she sort of it starts to go in that it's fine,
- 1:12:52you are who you were. And I like that we reached that
- 1:12:56conclusion at the end of the Vanquisher.
- 1:12:57She's got that watch, right, that has all the answers in it.
- 1:13:01And she goes, oh, fuck it. Like throws it up to the
- 1:13:04console. Yeah.
- 1:13:06Did they swear this much on who corner to corner?
- 1:13:08Oh, no, I didn't. Sorry, Luke.
- 1:13:14It was quite hard though, because I just, you know, I want
- 1:13:16to slip out. Beg your pardon?
- 1:13:18Oh, I've got John Barrowman on this call.
- 1:13:23Don't cancel me, Don't cancel me.
- 1:13:25That's all right. I mean, I've put out 1000 of
- 1:13:27these. I still haven't been cancelled
- 1:13:28yet. Give it time.
- 1:13:30Did you see the subtitle there for?
- 1:13:31Warp for warp, warp, warp. Love it.
- 1:13:34Attention to detail. Yeah.
- 1:13:38And obviously the colour changes across this next scene, from the
- 1:13:42green to the ultraviolet. I think beyond the the scene on
- 1:13:47the bridge, Oh no. And then the bit where they were
- 1:13:49going to talk, I think it's just balls to the walls action now,
- 1:13:52isn't it? But the bit where they all turn
- 1:13:54bad is, yeah, probably a dramatic high point.
- 1:13:59People just coming back from their holidays.
- 1:14:00They've just been off to Tenerife for a few days.
- 1:14:03Yeah. Coming back through passport
- 1:14:05control. Serves them right.
- 1:14:06I can't afford it. Yeah, got them all down, Daleks.
- 1:14:11It is interesting here though, where with Leo she doesn't sort
- 1:14:15of, you know, it's that whole thing in resolution where she's
- 1:14:19like, I will come and save you, I am going to save you.
- 1:14:24With Leo, there isn't so much of that here, is there?
- 1:14:26He sort of just dies and it's like, oh, sorry Leo, you're dead
- 1:14:28now. You're beyond redemption.
- 1:14:30You are right though, he's given a really good performance.
- 1:14:33Isn't it the way he's holding himself?
- 1:14:35He was in. Did you ever see Misfits?
- 1:14:37He was in that. No, at the school was that.
- 1:14:41Yeah, yeah, he was sort of in that for.
- 1:14:43I mean, they said him. Look, don't worry, we're we'll
- 1:14:46sort of CGI in all these tentacles later.
- 1:14:49You just carry yourself like you're being controlled, like a
- 1:14:51Dalek. You're wearing a backpack.
- 1:14:53It's a bit too heavy. I thought Donna in turn left
- 1:14:57you. Remember, yeah, sort of on the.
- 1:14:59Bag. Oh, you're right.
- 1:15:01Yeah. Look, I can see the purple
- 1:15:03creeping in now. Yeah, it creeps in, isn't it?
- 1:15:04Yeah, which I sort of, it's sort of obvious when you realise it,
- 1:15:07but I didn't really notice it I don't think at the time.
- 1:15:11Actually, I think it's not a performance that anyone comments
- 1:15:13on Leo in this he's. Great.
- 1:15:16Good. He's really good.
- 1:15:18Actually, it's not an episode that people really talk about
- 1:15:20is. It it's not and I sort of had
- 1:15:22forgotten about it really. I think I hadn't sort of gone
- 1:15:26back and watched it again really, but I've really enjoyed
- 1:15:29it. Look, it wasn't enough that he
- 1:15:31just told them that they are feeding liquidised humans to the
- 1:15:35Talek clones. He pulled a pipe down and
- 1:15:39allowed us to see it dripping all over.
- 1:15:41The floor, all over the floor. Literal human beings.
- 1:15:44Pure like pyramid. Thank you, Chris.
- 1:15:47Yeah, Happy New Year to you too. Yeah.
- 1:15:50You know, it's so purple now. I could be watching Sontaran
- 1:15:53Stratagem and The Poison Sky. Do you remember how purple that
- 1:15:56was? If only, yeah.
- 1:16:02But again, this use of colour, it makes it so distinctive, but
- 1:16:07it, you know, it isn't millions of pounds on CGI, it's just a
- 1:16:11real world practical effect that looks beautiful.
- 1:16:16Oh, and now he gets a big smile on his face, so I don't.
- 1:16:20We've already thought about that doctor.
- 1:16:21Don't worry. I mean doesn't Chris N say here
- 1:16:27Oh my God this is APR disaster I.
- 1:16:32Don't like people are going to die or anything like that.
- 1:16:35And somehow he's got such a silver tongue.
- 1:16:38Somehow he manages to negotiate his way out of this.
- 1:16:41Involving it at all, Somehow he's just saves the day.
- 1:16:44I, I, I can only think that there was supposed to be 1/3
- 1:16:48that like him as Prime Minister and they were going to bring him
- 1:16:50down somehow. Yeah.
- 1:16:54Oh, here we go. Red, here they go.
- 1:16:57They turn red and just blast random people.
- 1:17:00I don't you love the POV shots of Daleks.
- 1:17:03I love it. We think back to remembrance.
- 1:17:05The one in that is so good. The sort of the green shot where
- 1:17:08he shoots the guy underneath the truck for the first time.
- 1:17:11Tipping goes, flying backwards into the tarpaulin doesn't.
- 1:17:14It. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:15Even more sexy look, it's the POV shot, plus a Dalek
- 1:17:18extermination blast, plus the skeleton.
- 1:17:21Plus the X-ray shot, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:17:24Oh God. Look, random people.
- 1:17:25Policemen with machine guns now being gunned down.
- 1:17:28Yeah. Yes, tourists are very annoying.
- 1:17:32Killed a lot of them. Oh my God, I used to work
- 1:17:36somewhere that was near Westminster Bridge and having to
- 1:17:38cross that every day in the centre of town to get some lunch
- 1:17:40at a prayer and you'd be like, please, I'm done with the
- 1:17:43tourists, could you move out? Do you?
- 1:17:44Think that it was in fact unit. Yes, yeah.
- 1:17:48On the South Bank of the river, Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:51Probably we're watched by the pigeons, you know, the
- 1:17:53surveillance. Yeah, but Raven put the
- 1:17:54batteries in, yeah. I love this though because the
- 1:17:58actress, she doesn't actually want to do a dramatic fall to
- 1:18:00the floor, she sort. Of knows, Oh, she's a Dame.
- 1:18:06Yeah. Oh, actually, I don't know.
- 1:18:08Oh, no, she was out of shot. She just sort of fell out of
- 1:18:10shot. That's right where it's like
- 1:18:12they speak down the barrel of the lens of the camera.
- 1:18:15All humanity will be. Exterminated.
- 1:18:17Fabulous. It is great.
- 1:18:20What? Do you want on new?
- 1:18:21Year's Day. It's it's sort of an RTD ish bit
- 1:18:25that I think that sort of some real familiar setting.
- 1:18:29I mean, you've said that a couple of times throughout this,
- 1:18:31right? And I think Chippers does have a
- 1:18:33massive hard on for RTD. If you look at his era, he does
- 1:18:37like you know that you do and he does like bringing things back
- 1:18:40from that time. I do not object at all because I
- 1:18:43love RTD 1 so. Oh, hello, we've gone from
- 1:18:47purple to green now. Back to green, muddy rainbow
- 1:18:51rain. I look like they've they've
- 1:18:52gone, they've transported off and it's gone back to sort of
- 1:18:55the same green. Oh, this is great.
- 1:18:58All that time in the cell, I've been wondering who I am.
- 1:19:00I'm the Doctor. I'm the one who stops the
- 1:19:02Daleks. So.
- 1:19:03It's oh, good. Is that a little bit of a
- 1:19:05flashback to to Flatline where Capaldi says, you know, I'm the
- 1:19:09one who stops the monsters? It's a sort of similar speech,
- 1:19:12isn't it? What a ham.
- 1:19:14He comes flying out that Tardis. Doesn't I?
- 1:19:16I name you. The boneless, boneless.
- 1:19:21I mean, do you know what? I I can't be critical of that
- 1:19:24era. I can't be critical of Peter
- 1:19:25Capaldi. He was.
- 1:19:27I'm the same. I I think there are decisions
- 1:19:29made in that era that I don't necessarily agree with, but but
- 1:19:31he is full flawless. So great.
- 1:19:34I did. Oh, here we go.
- 1:19:37This is what I was talking about earlier, wasn't it?
- 1:19:39Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:19:40I mean, I I could think of sort of maybe a few better plans.
- 1:19:44Can I blow them up or something like?
- 1:19:47And how she goes, Oh, it's nuclear option.
- 1:19:49Jack knows exactly what she's thinking straight away.
- 1:19:51We're going to bring in this sort of S S Nazi Daleks to wipe
- 1:19:55out these sort of hybrid Daleks, and then we'll take out the S S
- 1:19:59Daleks. Because we're going to bring the
- 1:20:02Daleks to take out the Daleks, but then we've still got Daleks
- 1:20:04to take out ourselves somehow. Yeah.
- 1:20:07And she goes, wouldn't that be exciting?
- 1:20:08And we're like, yes. Yeah, it would be.
- 1:20:10Yeah. Please put those up a Daleks
- 1:20:11back. I really liked them.
- 1:20:13We could go to that bridge that Brunel made as well, but that
- 1:20:16would be even. Better, yeah.
- 1:20:18Oh, we get a Dalek saucer. It's.
- 1:20:20Been a. While since one of the.
- 1:20:22And watch this camera and go woo.
- 1:20:24I love. It grown like.
- 1:20:26Storm and look at these sort of 60s globes they've got about the
- 1:20:32place. So good.
- 1:20:35And you, the heartbeat came in here.
- 1:20:37I was like, yeah, darling heartbeat.
- 1:20:39It's a little bit of that that reminds me of, you know,
- 1:20:44resurrection where like Turlo's creeping around the.
- 1:20:47Oh, the ship, yeah, but that. Isn't where they're sort of
- 1:20:51creeping around this bit in a minute?
- 1:20:53You are Ball State now, Luke. All right?
- 1:20:58If this was an interview, the job is yours.
- 1:21:00OK, by the end of this call, I want you to have mentioned every
- 1:21:06single Doctor Who story, OK? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:11What are they called? Death Squad Daleks.
- 1:21:13Squad Daleks? Yeah, not terrified enough as
- 1:21:15they are. Death squad, I mean for kids.
- 1:21:17Man, if I if I'd heard that aged 8 I'd have been God fuck death
- 1:21:22squad to. Groom.
- 1:21:24It's just some people. The car.
- 1:21:29She sort of gets up and then looks at the sorcerer coming out
- 1:21:31of the sky. Who are the other Daleks?
- 1:21:33Obviously that is a shot from the stolen Earth right between
- 1:21:36the two buildings. The sources are going.
- 1:21:38Across but. The special effects, the CGI is
- 1:21:41so much more detailed now, yeah. Or Dalek invasion of Earth.
- 1:21:46Oh well done. Trying to get them all in now
- 1:21:48this. Is so impressive, you'll be so
- 1:21:54deep by the end you won't be able to get out.
- 1:21:56Good grief. Stuck with like Inception.
- 1:22:01Or prepare for maximum extermination that's a bit more
- 1:22:04than regular. Extermination.
- 1:22:06Yeah, Yeah. Hang on, isn't that planet the
- 1:22:09Daleks? Very.
- 1:22:11Possible. Oh yeah.
- 1:22:13It. Is.
- 1:22:14Oh, look at this. So good.
- 1:22:16Clifton Suspension Bridge. So have they got a drone there?
- 1:22:19How are they shooting above the bridge?
- 1:22:22They must. He must have been shot from a
- 1:22:23drone I think. But didn't some stuff leak from
- 1:22:26this at the time? Yeah, there was some water.
- 1:22:28Pictures. Or something.
- 1:22:29Yeah, that shot from above. Yeah, it's so good.
- 1:22:33I mean, and so come on, 2 Dalek armies fighting each other.
- 1:22:37Embrance, obviously. And Revelation.
- 1:22:39Yeah, Evil of the Daleks. Oh, evil.
- 1:22:42Yeah. You didn't waste any time, did
- 1:22:45you? When you was a child, you know
- 1:22:46you were pouring through all those books.
- 1:22:48Pouring through all those targets.
- 1:22:52I'm wondering, you know, maybe if you do it in secret, like the
- 1:22:54way you have, maybe the details go in even more.
- 1:22:58Yeah, Oh. Look at this.
- 1:23:01Explosions. Yeah, and then he sort of got,
- 1:23:06She lets him go to the street, she lets Robertson go now just
- 1:23:09to sort of wander off. He's such.
- 1:23:11A twat, all that product, he said.
- 1:23:14Maybe I can make a claim on the insurance.
- 1:23:18He is irredeemable, isn't he? That's what I lied about him.
- 1:23:21Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's just a shit, massive shit.
- 1:23:25I'm backing them. Oh yeah, he heads down there,
- 1:23:27doesn't he? Hey Daleks.
- 1:23:29Hey, it's me, leader of the Earth.
- 1:23:34I mean, I, I genuinely, I feel like I am about four years old
- 1:23:37again watching this, like. I know it's fun.
- 1:23:40It's fun of warp, warp. It tells us again on the
- 1:23:42subtitles. It's great.
- 1:23:44And he's walking through the wreckage of all these like
- 1:23:46blasted Daleks. And they've really, do you
- 1:23:49remember back in the day when we had that sequence in Doomsday
- 1:23:52where you had the Cybermen on the bridge and just a.
- 1:23:55Few sort of bricks. Spat up from the gravel and
- 1:23:58that's all they could really do. Look what they can do now.
- 1:24:01I mean, they're massacring people on the Straits.
- 1:24:03Huge set pieces on the Clifton Bridge.
- 1:24:07Well, I do, I think, I can't remember exactly, but I think
- 1:24:09was, I think the bridge might be repaired at the time, whether
- 1:24:12that was a cover or not or whether it actually was being
- 1:24:14repaired at the time. But it's great, a great thing to
- 1:24:17use and obviously not that far from Cardiff.
- 1:24:19Yeah, but and also as well, it isn't London, it's another
- 1:24:22landmark which is quite refreshing.
- 1:24:24Yeah, definitely. I mean, I loved how they used
- 1:24:26Sheffield in this. I thought it was really good.
- 1:24:30There's a line there. There's a bit like Power of the
- 1:24:32Daleks where he goes, you know, you, you, you'd sell out your
- 1:24:35own people, says the Daleks and. He's like.
- 1:24:38Of course I would hope. I would, I mean, there's,
- 1:24:40there's sort of flashbacks to that as well, isn't there?
- 1:24:42Like Leicesterson and you know, the Daleks in this and and back
- 1:24:47to victory, the Daleks as well, the whole would you like some
- 1:24:50tea? Do you have to mention that one
- 1:24:53my? Brace well and his iron sides.
- 1:24:57Yeah, Oh yeah. When they go off to that Dalek
- 1:24:59ship, it just goes off a Cliff of it.
- 1:25:02That's the. Great.
- 1:25:03Bubble bath Daleks that. Is a bad ship.
- 1:25:05It's literally just an empty office somewhere, isn't it?
- 1:25:07It is. I know.
- 1:25:09Compare it to this in this one, Yeah.
- 1:25:13I wonder, you know, if we didn't explore those stairs.
- 1:25:15She's got there too much in that tardy.
- 1:25:17They didn't really go up there very much, do they?
- 1:25:19No, not like, you know, we sort of see Matt Smith hanging
- 1:25:22underneath the console or I love that even in Capaldi you've got
- 1:25:25him at two different levels. But yeah.
- 1:25:27I've noticed how we've skipped around the subject of Matt Smith
- 1:25:30on this call. I'm assuming you're a fan.
- 1:25:33Most people are a big fan. Yeah.
- 1:25:36Or. OK, well, you know it's a good
- 1:25:38thing you're cute. But I like it all.
- 1:25:42I like it all. It's very little that I don't
- 1:25:44like. That was a great line there.
- 1:25:46Again, very economic. So all the SAS Daleks have
- 1:25:49destroyed all of Robinson's. Yeah, right.
- 1:25:52So that's one not gone. One not gone, Yeah.
- 1:25:55I think we see one more, don't we?
- 1:25:57We see one more, sort of like teleports.
- 1:25:59Isn't it onto the Dalek saucer for a second thing?
- 1:26:01I'm not quite sure why it turns up.
- 1:26:04Well, it does have a wonderful moment where he goes.
- 1:26:06Please, I am a Dalek. You could turn me into a real
- 1:26:09Dalek. I mean, I do love it when when
- 1:26:13Daleks are bastards to their own cunt.
- 1:26:15You mentioned Planet of the Daleks, the bit where that
- 1:26:18supreme Dalek comes in. It goes you bunch of useless
- 1:26:21cunts right and start blowing them all.
- 1:26:25It's like the boss from hell and he.
- 1:26:27Yeah, he sort of turns out I've left you on this planet to get
- 1:26:30invisibility. What have you been up to?
- 1:26:33Oh Luke, please can we do Planet of the Daleks?
- 1:26:35We'll have great fun with that. So good.
- 1:26:37You will have to put up with me talking about ice volcanoes
- 1:26:40erupting though. But I know there's lots of
- 1:26:42sticky substances. They're crawling about in it at
- 1:26:46one point, aren't they? And.
- 1:26:49Then Joe gets sprayed several times.
- 1:26:51So much to talk, apprentice. Handcuffs.
- 1:26:54Birded Horsefall. I always liked what they, what
- 1:26:58they, you know, there's a bit where they sit and they eat like
- 1:27:00Milky bars. I love a Milky.
- 1:27:03Give me the advert for that red car round the blue.
- 1:27:06Oh no, that's Milky. Wayne.
- 1:27:09Oh, of course it will. Sorry, Milky Way.
- 1:27:12Milky Bow was a cowboy. Wasn't the Milky bar Kid is
- 1:27:14strong and tough? Oh, we had a terrible life,
- 1:27:17didn't he? That poor kid apparently got it
- 1:27:19was a bit like that little kid that was in The Phantom Menace.
- 1:27:22They got bullied out of school. Oh.
- 1:27:25Yeah. I'm the sort of person that
- 1:27:27laughs at that sort of thing. I love that you're so gentle
- 1:27:30that you feel sad for him. I'm sad for it.
- 1:27:33Oh, here we go. Robertson's going to screw over
- 1:27:36the doctor now. So here's the deal.
- 1:27:40Yeah, it sounds like bloody yellow sugar now, doesn't it?
- 1:27:43Yeah, the Art of the deal to reference another American.
- 1:27:49Yeah, he really pops in now this other Dalek.
- 1:27:50I mean I I do like the new drones but I do still have a
- 1:27:54massive soft spot for the gold ones.
- 1:27:56You see those bronze ones, you're like, oh, they're really
- 1:27:59good. I mean the paradigm Daleks.
- 1:28:01I mean, please, let's hear your opinion.
- 1:28:03Awful. They're so awful.
- 1:28:06Have you got any Dalek toys you didn't get?
- 1:28:08Those ones did. You no.
- 1:28:10I used to have loads of them, loads of the sort of day pulled
- 1:28:12Apple ones, but I got rid of all of those as well.
- 1:28:15That went with your whole. That went with it all went yeah,
- 1:28:18yeah, did. It end up.
- 1:28:20I I sold a lot of it boot fairs. Oh OK or Chuck or chucked it.
- 1:28:24It's just gone. You put something down right on
- 1:28:28a table at a boot fair. Now there's Oh my God, they just
- 1:28:31snap them up. Gone.
- 1:28:33Yeah, I probably sold them for like a couple of quid.
- 1:28:36I had a couple of that's like the big sort of playsets that
- 1:28:40had like Sylvester and Mel and a canine and A and I remember.
- 1:28:45Talking about the dapper ones, Yeah.
- 1:28:47Yeah, you could get a bloody. I'm sorry it's got rid.
- 1:28:50Of I had totally the shop was shutting down in the early 90s
- 1:28:55was it? The pink male.
- 1:28:56Or the other one. Yeah, it's the pink male best,
- 1:29:00the huge shoulder pads. Old shooter pads, Yeah.
- 1:29:03Did you have the Tardis? You know they had the content.
- 1:29:05Yeah, I got rid of. It I'm not sure I can even look
- 1:29:09at you right now if I'm on a strange couple of quid.
- 1:29:12I know I can't. I'll get that back now.
- 1:29:16Don't you recognize my face? I was that person, that person
- 1:29:20in the cupboard. Background Background I
- 1:29:22recognize. No, yeah, not Ave. and back.
- 1:29:25Yeah. So you don't mind all these
- 1:29:26crystals about the TARDIS then? No.
- 1:29:28I quite like it because if you think like the sort of going
- 1:29:31back to the sort of Eccleston tenant, sort of it being
- 1:29:35slightly grown rather than rather than sort of made, I do
- 1:29:39quite like that. The first time I sort of thought
- 1:29:43about that sort of thing like an organically grown ship.
- 1:29:46Do you ever watch Farscape? Moyer and Farscape.
- 1:29:48Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, they sort of.
- 1:29:50And I do like that idea. I just don't know that those
- 1:29:54crystals look a bit cumbersome when they're sort of and.
- 1:29:56It's quite hard to shoot around. I think they get better with
- 1:29:59shooting around them, but they do block out a lot of the
- 1:30:02action. I promise you I'm not doing this
- 1:30:05on purpose, but I think they look better erect than half
- 1:30:08mast. Are you sure you're not doing
- 1:30:10that? It's when they just keep rising
- 1:30:13and folding. It's a very odd effect.
- 1:30:17They don't do that shot too often to achieve.
- 1:30:21You sound like you talk from experience there.
- 1:30:23Not at all. What's going on here?
- 1:30:27Kidnap him? Look at Chris Noff's face.
- 1:30:30He had taken. Any of this Seriously.
- 1:30:34Oh, so she's about to suck all the Daleks in?
- 1:30:37Indeed. I mean, look at the cityscape
- 1:30:41underneath her as well. Right.
- 1:30:43If you think like how we've gone from sort of the Battle of
- 1:30:46Canary Wharf and the Genesis arc and it's.
- 1:30:50I mean, look at that now, those little Daleks, they look really
- 1:30:53funny. Yeah, look at, I mean just how
- 1:30:56many there are and in such detail.
- 1:30:59Yeah. And I love that they sort of
- 1:31:02fool us as well by having the real, you know, Herb TARDIS
- 1:31:05background in there. I like to think of her running
- 1:31:08through the behind me. It's a good bait and switch.
- 1:31:13But you know when I first watched it I thought, oh what a
- 1:31:16waste of a TARDIS. They could have had two.
- 1:31:18Oh yeah, the Gallifrey's destroyed.
- 1:31:20You know we're never going to get another one again.
- 1:31:23So we're still doing Last of the Time Lords, are we?
- 1:31:25Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:27What did happen to that Gallifrey from Hellbent?
- 1:31:29Oh yeah, the Master blew it up, didn't he?
- 1:31:32Yeah. Oh, hell bent, Luke.
- 1:31:37Yeah, I'm not, not Yeah. I mean, look at that explosion,
- 1:31:43all of those different mushroom clouds coming out.
- 1:31:45It's so and. Then we're back in a in a sort
- 1:31:48of retro TARDIS, again with a hologram.
- 1:31:51Lovely hologram. And that's something I always
- 1:31:53love seeing is a Dalek in the TARDIS.
- 1:31:55It's so incongruous. Oh, rare.
- 1:31:57Yeah, I love those. That line was like Daleks are
- 1:32:01not pets. And then doesn't it just sort of
- 1:32:06scrunch up into a ball? Yeah, like a ball of paper.
- 1:32:10I can only imagine that's quite painful, you know, if you're
- 1:32:12inside. Probably if you're being
- 1:32:14squashed to an atom. But it is, I think he
- 1:32:18deliberately kept that TARDIS back from the Timeless Children
- 1:32:21so we could use it in this story.
- 1:32:23Or he thought, oh, wait, that's a great idea.
- 1:32:25They. Were like what?
- 1:32:26There must be sort of three Tardises from the Timeless
- 1:32:28Children. It's like the one that she sends
- 1:32:31the fan back in. There's one tree goes back in,
- 1:32:33and then there's the actual one. What happened to all the others?
- 1:32:38So 1 ends up within the house in Sheffield, 1 is this one that
- 1:32:41gets collapsed, and then the other one is is the TARDIS.
- 1:32:45So does it collapse into like a star or something or it?
- 1:32:48Does, isn't it? It's.
- 1:32:50Very tidy. Well, they got rid of those
- 1:32:53Daleks. We put all the Daleks in here
- 1:32:55and now they've gone. Crush them.
- 1:32:57The end I I was acting deliberately as a decoy said.
- 1:33:04Come on Jody, give me a slap. So this was around the time
- 1:33:08where where Emily Maitlis had just done the I don't know
- 1:33:11whether it was the time when they filmed it where she'd done
- 1:33:13the Prince Andrew interview. OK, famous for that.
- 1:33:17So basically don't be interviewed by Emily Maitlis.
- 1:33:21I. Mean this is so.
- 1:33:23I mean it's both post and pre. It's Trump, isn't it isn't.
- 1:33:30It was. Obama in it.
- 1:33:32Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or Biden.
- 1:33:33So you're sort. Of in Biden.
- 1:33:34Sorry, yeah. All right, now, are you?
- 1:33:36No, because it's 2016 to 2020. So I think you aren't yet quite,
- 1:33:40quite a Biden. You're almost there.
- 1:33:42Oh, so it's still Trump at this point, I think.
- 1:33:45I mean, in Iraq is in the UK, it's so obviously a, a well.
- 1:33:49He does have a line in there doesn't he, where they mention
- 1:33:51Trump in as well. I hate.
- 1:33:52That guy, you are that guy he's sort of talking about, isn't he?
- 1:33:57Oh, you know, why can't everyone just have guns and shoot people?
- 1:34:00You know, it's very Trump hang. On a second they were just
- 1:34:03watching Newsnight, which is on like 10:00 at night and now it's
- 1:34:06daytime. Oh, and also Captain Jack Go.
- 1:34:10Sorry. What is this about?
- 1:34:12He's not about, is he? No.
- 1:34:14No, it's all in ADR, isn't it? Has he been cancelled?
- 1:34:18At this point? Not.
- 1:34:19That he had. You don't see Jodie's voice
- 1:34:21move, but I only think like, was he going to play more of a role
- 1:34:24in 13? I do hear that he was supposed
- 1:34:29to be the Vinda character in 30. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:34:32Was he, was he actually going to join them on the TARDIS at this
- 1:34:34point or I don't know. Maybe, maybe no.
- 1:34:39I don't know why they. It's odd though.
- 1:34:41It's odd to not have a goodbye. But then we're quickly
- 1:34:44distracted with this goodbye. So this goodbye which?
- 1:34:47Is really beautiful. I think he's really nice.
- 1:34:52He's really sweet. The sort of especially, you
- 1:34:54know, the whole thing of Ryan like reconciling with his
- 1:34:57father, falling in love with his friends again, wanting to go.
- 1:35:02And then then Graham sort of reaction to it, where he really
- 1:35:05doesn't want to leave, but he loves Ryan so much that he goes,
- 1:35:09OK, I've got a like, it's a bigger adventure to see what
- 1:35:12happens to you next than it is to carry on travelling in the
- 1:35:14TARDIS. I think it was such a savvy move
- 1:35:17to make Ryan a really gentle that, you know, like a really a
- 1:35:24really soft. I don't mean that in a negative
- 1:35:27way. And for him to now say, you know
- 1:35:30what, they need me. I need to be a man.
- 1:35:33And people say he didn't go on a journey.
- 1:35:35He literally says to her here, I didn't know what I wanted to do
- 1:35:37before this. And now I do know what I want to
- 1:35:40do, which is the people I love. And she says, doesn't she like
- 1:35:43you? We won't be, Jodie says.
- 1:35:45Like you won't be the same people after you've travelled,
- 1:35:48travel with us. And that definitely happens with
- 1:35:50him. You can see I'm developing
- 1:35:51across across his time there. Well, did you hear there how
- 1:35:54quickly yeah this went? Yep, Yep, I'm.
- 1:35:57Saying I'm, I mean. She loves her, I'm telling you.
- 1:36:01I it would have been nice, wouldn't it, to see an all
- 1:36:03female TARDIS crew for a bit, I think.
- 1:36:05I do love it in the Halloween apocalypse when it's just the
- 1:36:08two of them. It's really.
- 1:36:09But at this point, I think, did we know that John Bishop was
- 1:36:12coming in? I think there's a trailer.
- 1:36:13Wasn't there after this? Terrible trailer of him getting
- 1:36:17out the back of a van. Yeah, yeah, Plasterer.
- 1:36:20That's never mentioned again, Chris.
- 1:36:21Mate, you make good Doctor Who, but terrible.
- 1:36:23Your previews, your trailers, they're terrible.
- 1:36:28Oh, I do love Graham as well because Graham was all ready to
- 1:36:31go with Jodie and like. Yeah, he wants to go and Planet
- 1:36:35or whatever, they're going to go off too.
- 1:36:38And he makes the Reich always says no, I don't want to miss a
- 1:36:42single moment of the incredible person you're going to be.
- 1:36:46So sweet. Like I, I, I get this.
- 1:36:51I don't get what happened at the end of Hell Ben.
- 1:36:55I just don't understand how I'm supposed to feel about that
- 1:36:58Dinah flying about in space. No, no, it's so abstract that
- 1:37:03you, but this is like real, you can imagine real people.
- 1:37:05Going. I don't, I can't do it anymore
- 1:37:08and I want to see my friends and my family and that matters to me
- 1:37:11more. And you can understand Graham,
- 1:37:13just his love for Ryan. And there's a lovely beat where
- 1:37:16they just put their heads together, which could have been
- 1:37:19really pony, but it's just quick.
- 1:37:21I mean, it almost. Is it almost the line?
- 1:37:24It's on the line. Let's have a High School
- 1:37:26Musical. Moment.
- 1:37:27Come on. Yeah.
- 1:37:28I think they pull it off because I can imagine, I don't know when
- 1:37:31they filmed this in the sequence of the actual, you know, filming
- 1:37:33the filming the show and whether this was close towards them
- 1:37:35leaving or not. But you can sort of imagine if
- 1:37:38they've spent years filming together and then they do it.
- 1:37:40That huddle is quite a you know, isn't that?
- 1:37:43All those shoots are in South Africa as well.
- 1:37:45Haven't they? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:46Yeah. They've done a lot together.
- 1:37:49Yeah. By all accounts it was just
- 1:37:51laughs all the way as well I. Can imagine it was because I
- 1:37:54think that, you know, I haven't heard a lot of bad stuff about
- 1:37:57any of them really about any of the of that cast.
- 1:38:00Alright, the only person who could.
- 1:38:02And it wasn't even stroppy. They just went, oh, God, Jodie
- 1:38:06is in the mood. Let's all cheer her up.
- 1:38:08Come on. Yeah.
- 1:38:09Yeah. But apparently everyone just
- 1:38:10adored her. Now, I quite like this.
- 1:38:12I know you. You could probably say this is a
- 1:38:14bit twee. I.
- 1:38:15Don't know, it's a bit twee, but I think they deserve it after,
- 1:38:20you know, they've delivered the first female doctor on screen.
- 1:38:25It's just, it's good. Oh, fellas.
- 1:38:29Just in case you know you've got any adventures to go on.
- 1:38:33Do you want to go to a volcano maybe or?
- 1:38:36When he starts flirting with Ace, that's hilarious.
- 1:38:39It'd. Be great.
- 1:38:39Oh, that'd be great together, wouldn't they?
- 1:38:42It wasn't until they was flirted right?
- 1:38:44I was like fuck Sophie Aldridge, the same age as him.
- 1:38:48I thought that as well. I was like, oh, hang on a
- 1:38:49minute, This is a bit of a bit of an age gap here going on.
- 1:38:52Oh no, it's not. You know, she just puts that
- 1:38:54jacket on and suddenly she's 18 again.
- 1:38:57Yeah. I don't say this very often, but
- 1:39:00God I love her and para the Doctor, Sophie Aldridge.
- 1:39:03I love it. Well.
- 1:39:03She jumped off that building straight into the TARDIS.
- 1:39:06But for me, she was the first probably companion I
- 1:39:09experienced. Do you know what?
- 1:39:11I hear that so much though, that that was people's.
- 1:39:15Ear when I was a kid, I didn't realise, you know, that she
- 1:39:17wasn't from Perryvale and you know, oh.
- 1:39:19Don't listen to me, all right? Just enjoy your nostalgia, OK?
- 1:39:25That's why podcasts are poison. Yeah, we're getting back on the
- 1:39:28bike. I do wish he most ride off into
- 1:39:31the sunset on the bike. I think that would have been
- 1:39:33quite nice. Oh, sorry, I mean, I just love
- 1:39:35people falling over. Bless him.
- 1:39:40And he's got the yellow beanie on, I think.
- 1:39:41Didn't he have that at the start of the when we first see it?
- 1:39:44Possibly. I mean it was a bizarre thing
- 1:39:45that dyspraxia because occasionally it was plot
- 1:39:48relevant and then occasionally we just forgot to play all
- 1:39:50together. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:39:54I just, I do. I genuinely think Ryan Graham is
- 1:39:57not underrated because people love Graham.
- 1:39:59I think Ryan is quite underrated, I think.
- 1:40:01He's really underrated because I suppose he isn't.
- 1:40:03You know, you've got the sort of Yas, the sort of Phasmin going
- 1:40:06on. Graham is Brad Bradley, so.
- 1:40:09Shit, what more does he need? Exactly.
- 1:40:12Yeah. And then Ryan is, is is Adric,
- 1:40:16isn't he? He is, yeah, but I've been Adric
- 1:40:19didn't look like that. I mean, a love of this as well.
- 1:40:23The call back to the location from the woman who failed to.
- 1:40:25Work. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:40:29Oh, the funniest call back ever was do you remember the end of
- 1:40:31Eve with the Darlings? The fellow from the crane who's.
- 1:40:34Watching the and. Everyone's going.
- 1:40:36Who the hell is that? Don't you remember the great?
- 1:40:40Man. Being a big.
- 1:40:43Touted as a big. Thing.
- 1:40:45Here he is. He's back.
- 1:40:45Cray man's back. I don't remember him doing
- 1:40:49anything. And woman.
- 1:40:51Has he been at a convention? He probably has.
- 1:40:52Hasn't he somewhere? I called him Granddad.
- 1:40:55I mean, it took us a year to get there.
- 1:40:58That's sweet. Go on.
- 1:41:00Oh no, you want twee, I mean. This is twee.
- 1:41:05This is twee. Look.
- 1:41:08I've got something in my eyes. I think I can see my mother in
- 1:41:10the ether. Yeah.
- 1:41:15I mean, I do love her. Sharon D Clark.
- 1:41:17I kind of wished that there'd been a bit of space for her as
- 1:41:20well. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:41:21Yeah. I mean a brave decision to kill
- 1:41:24off someone like her in the first place.
- 1:41:27Indeed. Yeah.
- 1:41:30I mean, I mean, I did like the fact that then we dealt with the
- 1:41:33emotional consequences of that for the year and it was two men
- 1:41:36having to try and deal. With yeah, yeah, which is good,
- 1:41:39Yeah, yeah. I realise it looks bad in that
- 1:41:42first episode, but also as well I was quite I was quite pleased
- 1:41:45that he was willing to kill people off.
- 1:41:47And for the rest. Of it all saved with love and
- 1:41:50it's all kind of the end. Because everyone who dies in
- 1:41:53office time was like, oh, we'll be alive next week, don't worry
- 1:41:55about it. Oh, there he goes.
- 1:41:57So unfair. And then Graham comes running
- 1:42:01over the hill. Ryan.
- 1:42:03Don't say it would have been great.
- 1:42:05Oh, look, that was fabulous. I mean, I said to you in a
- 1:42:08message, didn't I? I said there's a lot of admin
- 1:42:10going on here. We're bringing Jack back because
- 1:42:13I think we're setting him up for the next season.
- 1:42:15We're getting rid of Ryan and Graham.
- 1:42:18We're dealing with stuff from revolutions.
- 1:42:22Loads is sort of having to do. It's very Planet of Fire.
- 1:42:26There you go, there's my first. There we go.
- 1:42:30But within that, I just think scene to scene it is really
- 1:42:34entertaining. It's really entertaining, but it
- 1:42:36also does give those sort of room to breathe.
- 1:42:38You get those emotional moments when I some people don't
- 1:42:41necessarily like it, but I really like those moments.
- 1:42:43I think some of the best moments for Ryan are in this, some great
- 1:42:46moments for Yaz. Probably, you know, John
- 1:42:49Barrowman, probably some of his best moments in his time.
- 1:42:51Show his acting, you said? Yeah.
- 1:42:54I think cracking scenes in it and and the adventures sort of,
- 1:42:59you know, actually stuff is good as well.
- 1:43:00So it's it's really enjoyable. And the fact that it just feels
- 1:43:04quite cinematic. It feels quite big.
- 1:43:06It feels a tree for a festive special.
- 1:43:10Well, you've just given me many, many reasons there as to why
- 1:43:13people should go and pick this up off their shelf immediately.
- 1:43:15What I'm going to ask you to do is hone it down into three
- 1:43:18fabulous things to recommend revolution of the diets.
- 1:43:22Now you go first and then mate, and then you, and then they will
- 1:43:24bat it back and forth. Three things go OK.
- 1:43:28One lighting, I think the lighting on this is beautiful
- 1:43:32and I think it can such a small thing, but it can make or break
- 1:43:36an episode and just the use of coloured lighting this I think
- 1:43:39it looks beautiful for for you know, it's not massive, vast
- 1:43:42CGI, massive budgets, but it just it's really immersive, gets
- 1:43:47you in the story and looks gorgeous.
- 1:43:49I think it's just shot beautifully.
- 1:43:51My first one then is going to be, and I'm going to be very
- 1:43:54clear when I say this, Jack Robertson.
- 1:43:58Not Kristoff. Jack Robertson, the character
- 1:44:02Utterly absurd. Tech messenger less.
- 1:44:07Absurd I think than Ratneys in the UK.
- 1:44:10Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just doing all those sort of
- 1:44:12dodgy meetings with the Prime Minister, how he what he wants
- 1:44:17to be involved, sort of in the middle of the story, how he
- 1:44:19sells himself out to the Daleks and and then how at the end he
- 1:44:23tries to turn it, turn himself into the hero.
- 1:44:25I mean, he's utterly loathsome in every way, but he comes in
- 1:44:29with comedy, comedy lines that genuinely hit and chip N comedy
- 1:44:34can be hit or miss. Dare I mention the Wi-Fi family?
- 1:44:39So I, I, I just think he's a great villain and I loved him in
- 1:44:42Iraq, in the Uki think I like him a bit more in this I.
- 1:44:44Think I like him more in this. I would have liked to have seen
- 1:44:47his third episode, and yeah, I completely understand why we
- 1:44:50never got that. But yeah, yes, yeah.
- 1:44:52Moving on swiftly from Chris NI, think for #2 I'd have to go for
- 1:45:00probably Ryan. I know it's quite an obvious
- 1:45:02one, but as you said, you know, he's under looked in other
- 1:45:04episodes, he's underappreciated. But that scene between him and
- 1:45:08Jodie is beautiful. He's beautiful, really nice.
- 1:45:13The sort of it really, it moves the story along.
- 1:45:16It's sort of is a turning point where she realizes that she is
- 1:45:19the Doctor regardless of background and everything that's
- 1:45:22happened in the Times children, and it gives him a reason to
- 1:45:26leave essentially at the end. It's just a nice, it's a nice to
- 1:45:29set up the companion departure and I think really nice for him
- 1:45:33to get a scene like that before he leaves the series.
- 1:45:36I think it's really good. Yeah, I, I think it was time for
- 1:45:39him to go. But I think it's, it's a nice
- 1:45:42understated departure. We've had so many operatic ones
- 1:45:46in the past, but you really talked about the BBC repeats,
- 1:45:52the BBC Two repeats back in the 90's, the Colin was Revelation
- 1:45:57of the Daleks. Wasn't it?
- 1:45:58Yeah. I remember watching that because
- 1:46:00my second thing is the fact that I basically was what would I
- 1:46:05have been then 13. So I was basically 13 again
- 1:46:08watching this because I remember seeing the the white and the
- 1:46:13grey Daleks in Revelation, like blasting the shit out of each
- 1:46:17other on Net Cross. And I love, loved it.
- 1:46:19And just watching it here again in this, but on such a scale,
- 1:46:23that scene on the bridge is extraordinary.
- 1:46:26Yeah. So basically turning me 13 is my
- 1:46:29second thing. Like a massive explosion
- 1:46:31remembrance we didn't have. Like the police got called out
- 1:46:35that game. Things been coming.
- 1:46:39Don't worry, we can do it in post now.
- 1:46:41Oh, thank. You.
- 1:46:42Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But then you, like you said when
- 1:46:44they were massacring people on the streets, there was great
- 1:46:47flames blowing, There was bricks flying everywhere.
- 1:46:50Wonderful. Yeah, wonderful.
- 1:46:52It's good to be a kid for, you know, every now and.
- 1:46:54Then it is, it is. And I suppose another point that
- 1:46:58is great about this is the design of those, the sort of the
- 1:47:00defence trained Daleks, because you've seen the junkyard one the
- 1:47:03year previously, but this one with the kind of the black and
- 1:47:06the silver and the blue lighting, I think they're really
- 1:47:08good, really good. And my third thing is going to
- 1:47:13be, I think, like all of the fun little Easter eggs you get
- 1:47:18throughout this, starting with, you know, that very funny joke
- 1:47:22following on from Revolution. This is the Star Wars joke at
- 1:47:25the star. All of the fabulous creatures,
- 1:47:28the silence, the Weeping Angels, the petite, whatever that
- 1:47:34enormous. Green very thing is.
- 1:47:38You know that he hasn't forgotten the TARDIS from the
- 1:47:41Timeless Children. There's just lots of lovely
- 1:47:43little Easter eggs rolling through this.
- 1:47:46Obviously, Kristen off coming back is something from the past.
- 1:47:50Yeah, I think Chipnall knows how to push the fan buttons, and he
- 1:47:55does it here. It's New Year's, you know, and I
- 1:47:59just think he got these specials.
- 1:48:01He understood what he was doing. Big action, really entertaining,
- 1:48:06loads of energy and then sort of getting you kick starting for
- 1:48:11the next series. I mean, I was desperate for flux
- 1:48:13after this. We had to wait a long time,
- 1:48:15didn't we really? Because we had to wait till
- 1:48:17Halloween. So this is on the 1st of
- 1:48:18January. We've got to wait till the 31st
- 1:48:20of October till. Was it on the same year?
- 1:48:23I think it was in 2021. Wasn't it in Halloween
- 1:48:25apocalypse? Yeah, it's like we were lucky to
- 1:48:28get it though, weren't we? This story.
- 1:48:30Was basically we had, you know, it'd been a while since the time
- 1:48:34of his children. That happened in March 2020, I
- 1:48:36think. So we've sort of within 18
- 1:48:38months, we only had this one story.
- 1:48:40So we were in lockdown when Revolution came out, Yeah.
- 1:48:44Yeah. Well, I think depending on where
- 1:48:46you were, do you remember that that Christmas where London and
- 1:48:50the Southeast I think went into Tier 4 or whatever it was and it
- 1:48:53was, it was Christmas was cancelled at the last minute.
- 1:48:56And yeah. I'm going to let you into a
- 1:48:59little secret now. Now we've done the commentary is
- 1:49:01I've been begging my over half for about two years to do the
- 1:49:07commentary on Revolution of the Daleks because I didn't think
- 1:49:10any fucker would ever want to do it.
- 1:49:11And I'd be going come on, it's great.
- 1:49:13It's Daleks, it's great. I'm really pleased, he said.
- 1:49:17No, frankly, it was a great introduction to having you on
- 1:49:20hamster. Great to be on.
- 1:49:23An exciting episode to come in. Now I have I scared you off?
- 1:49:26Are you willing to come back and do another one of these things?
- 1:49:29I think, I think I'm hungry for more, Joe.
- 1:49:31Oh, music to my ears. Well, I mean, could I possibly
- 1:49:36entice you to the planet Spirodon?
- 1:49:38Well. Inspired.
- 1:49:40Yes. The greatest.
- 1:49:42I think old Pertwee stories are the best Dalek stories ever made
- 1:49:46for me. Oh you are man after my own
- 1:49:49heart. What day of the Daleks as well?
- 1:49:51Deaf to the Daleks? Yeah, those, yeah, the planet,
- 1:49:53the three of my favourites, probably.
- 1:49:55Would you ever look at an IKEA floor in the same way again?
- 1:49:58Or like Hoover attachment? I think Planet is my favorite.
- 1:50:02The three, though? So it's so it's like Technicolor
- 1:50:04gorgeous. Well, OK, Well then until we
- 1:50:10slipper and slide through the. Oh yeah.
- 1:50:13I forgot about that. It is.
- 1:50:14It is quite squirty, isn't? It look at oh there those
- 1:50:16plants. Yeah.
- 1:50:18Weird plant on the weird eye things.
- 1:50:20Yeah, the weird eye things and the ice tunnels full of.
- 1:50:23Invisible people, The strange gunk that's all over Joe Grant's
- 1:50:26arm. I'm sure you're ready for this.
- 1:50:30I think I'll have a couple of drinks before that one.
- 1:50:32Let's do, I mean, I'll do what I always do with a six part.
- 1:50:36We'll do three and three, six in one night.
- 1:50:38Man, that one, that's just too much of me.
- 1:50:40And two, it's exhausting talking about Doctor Who for many, many
- 1:50:44hours. But before we go, can I just
- 1:50:48very quickly ask you to mention your story one last time and if
- 1:50:54you're willing, let people know where you are online?
- 1:50:58OK, so I love Jodie, and if you love Jodie like I love Jodie,
- 1:51:02you can check out the Wednesday that Wasn't on Big Finish.
- 1:51:05It's a free short trip. You can download it yourself.
- 1:51:09Great tile, by the way. Great tile.
- 1:51:12Lucky it was a Wednesday, it's just the alliteration.
- 1:51:14It could have been any day, but actually a Wednesday sort of
- 1:51:16makes sense. So the Wednesday that wasn't,
- 1:51:19you can download that for free and then you can read the script
- 1:51:22as well if you like. It's also on there and
- 1:51:23amazingly, you can download the audio score as well.
- 1:51:26Which is really a great score as well.
- 1:51:29Yeah, yeah. I mean, the sound design is
- 1:51:31beautiful on it. They're just at a level now,
- 1:51:34aren't they, Big Finish, where the releases are so polished.
- 1:51:38So good, it's so good. I'm still clinging on slightly
- 1:51:43on Twitter on X but planning to move probably at some point.
- 1:51:46But I am at Snark in Space on there.
- 1:51:50You can find me on there. Yeah, do you know, I I was
- 1:51:53thinking earlier and I was like, you know, oh, I can't wait to
- 1:51:56talk to that fellow snark tonight.
- 1:51:58And I was. Like what the fuck is his?
- 1:51:59Name all I know of him as it's the snark in space.
- 1:52:04There's nothing snarky about you at all.
- 1:52:05You're the most lovely expert. Well.
- 1:52:09I had to keep myself secret, didn't I?
- 1:52:10Because I'm under the radar. Oh, of course.
- 1:52:14OK, well I'm so sorry, but I should be posting all of this on
- 1:52:19your social. No, I won't, Luke, it has been a
- 1:52:23genuine, genuine pleasure. And just to say, if you enjoy
- 1:52:27the Wednesday that wasn't half as much as I did, you'll have a
- 1:52:30fucking amazing time with it. It's a wonderful story.
- 1:52:34Thank you very much for your time tonight.
- 1:52:35Oh, no, thank you. It's lovely, Joe.
- 1:52:37And now we need to get back to the squirty planet.
