Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody is
- 0:15Jeff Mosher, Adam Kaplan, and man, we got an action
- 0:18packed inside the Birds because the Birds stay busy, Adam.
- 0:21They are one of the most active teams at every
- 0:24time in the calendar year to cover. So not only
- 0:26do we have their preseason game to give intel on
- 0:30discuss that, but then on Sunday they make a very
- 0:33interesting trade that we're gonna go really inside, obviously, getting
- 0:37Johnny Metchi from the Texans in exchange for Harris and Bryant.
- 0:41We'll get into all the particulars of that, but you know,
- 0:43even as we go through that, then Bam, camp is
- 0:46gonna pick right up and before you know what, the
- 0:48third preseason game and then the cutdown date is going
- 0:50to be upon us. And that's the way it goes
- 0:52in training camp.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Meschi will see if Mechi will go into the
- 0:57trade in medimal see if he's there today because they
- 1:00they play Friday, walk through Thursday, practices Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,
- 1:04so he'll get some practice time in. And then the
- 1:07question is what could have given a package to play
- 1:10for Friday's game. They got to they kind of got
- 1:12to get to know him very quickly. But yeah, that
- 1:14was interesting. Another trade with the Texans man Nick Casserio
- 1:16and Howie Roseman. The way it works is, folks, teams
- 1:19have trade calls this time of year because they try
- 1:21to see, Okay, who's available, who are you cutting? You
- 1:27might ask about a player because you know that guy's
- 1:29a third stringer or like with Mechi's case, it was
- 1:34very questionable whether he's going to make the team. Harrison
- 1:35Brian almost certainly wasn't going to make the team. So
- 1:37and we'll get into what why both teams made in
- 1:40all that, what we think, what we've heard, cash and
- 1:42stuff like that, but it's always interesting, you know, it's
- 1:45it's extremely a minor trade.
- 1:46Speaker 3: But John Metchi was his second round pick.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I know it's been a long time ago and there's
- 1:50been some problems, but really good person. It's a shame,
- 1:53you know, he had to go with what he went through.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Helpful us but.
- 1:55Speaker 2: He's doing great from one understand and we'll see what
- 1:59happens here. But yeah, certainly when it broke what Sunday
- 2:02afternoon was kind of interesting.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, definitely interesting and par for the course for
- 2:07the Eagles. Just a few notes before we get started. Obviously,

- 3:30Speaker 2: A two special, two special live streams doing halftime of
- 3:36the first two games, and.
- 3:37Speaker 3: People showed up.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I wasn't sure if they show up, but two twenty
- 3:40five Eastern on Saturday, they showed up.
- 3:42Speaker 3: It was actually pretty good crowd.
- 3:43Speaker 1: That's great. You know, the interest right now, it's sky high.
- 3:46Everybody loves preseason, that loves training camp, and they love
- 3:50figuring out those bottom roster spots. So and we listen,
- 3:52we've got a couple of weeks here left, so we'll
- 3:54talk about the preseason game and what that showed us
- 3:56as well. Uh, the Mechi trade, So let's get it.
- 3:59The funny if you're being a cynic or you're just
- 4:01like making fun of a mid camp trade, you're like, oh,
- 4:04this is a let's trade our guy who's not going
- 4:06to make our roster but might make yours for your
- 4:09guy who's not gonna make your roster, but Mike might
- 4:11Mike ours. But the reality is, I mean, we were
- 4:14talking about this from a Harrison Bryan standpoint last week.
- 4:18We were sort of like, why is he even running
- 4:20with the twos? Because in camp he's not even doing that.
- 4:23He's not really producing much. He's almost invisible, hasn't caught
- 4:26a lot of passes. Kylon Grantson has been playing not
- 4:29only on tight end as well, but also on kickoff
- 4:32coverage and punt coverage and special teams, which sometimes shows
- 4:35you a guy who has a leg up there. But
- 4:38it was clear Harrison Bryant wasn't gonna make this team man.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Yeah, And now a couple of things here.
- 4:42Speaker 2: The Titans left brevn Jordan, their number two tight end
- 4:44for the season, doing a severeknear injury, so they did
- 4:47a third tight end when Bryant was in. It was
- 4:50mostly as a backup why tight end to Dallas Goddard
- 4:53does bot f the why and the other position that
- 4:56they have, but in Calcaterra just doesn't block well off.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And Brian actually came in. I think got my notes.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I think he came in the first quarter on a
- 5:04block and play. Kylein Granson is a better athlete, but
- 5:07he doesn't block as well.
- 5:08Speaker 3: And E. J.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Jenkins says both. So someone had to go. And if
- 5:12you're the Texans, you've got to have someone who's played before.
- 5:15You need someone who's been there and done that. Harrison
- 5:17Bryant's the one guy who had experience because if you
- 5:20look at it, they've got Dalton Schultz clearly their story.
- 5:23He got his contract extension. Kate Stover was a fourth
- 5:25runner last year. Hasn't developed yet. Remember IRV Smith junior
- 5:29unfortunately just has not been able to develop. You know,
- 5:32he's been with a number of teams. I remember his
- 5:33dad or senior for the Saints and Dolphins. But so
- 5:36they needed a veteran tight end and that was it.
- 5:38I totally get it from their stand but that's obvious. Now,
- 5:41why would the Eagles want John MATCHI wasn't that they
- 5:43needed another receiver if you look at it right, and
- 5:46nice Smith didn't really play last season. Garris Cooper's been
- 5:48the Darling Lett camp. Hasn't played, It hasn't played Terras,
- 5:52Marshall has playing experience. Every Wims hasn't done anything as
- 5:55a receiver. Logic, Cooks just got back, he didn't play.
- 5:58Johnny Wilson's only had one year of playing experience. So
- 6:01behind the top three, what do you have here? Not
- 6:04a whole lot of experience. And there's this saying Bill
- 6:06Polling told me this, and I use this as a guide.
- 6:09You never turned down an upgrade. Right, it's John MITCHI
- 6:12Talon and every backup receiver they have. That's not even
- 6:15that to me. Other than Dotson, who was a first
- 6:17round pick. He's better than Wilson and I Smith, Cooper
- 6:20and Marshall, Avery Williams. Now, why was John Metchie available?
- 6:25You know, he missed his first year due to leukemia.
- 6:27He also came off the a c L injury I
- 6:29believe his last year at Alabama, so he got over
- 6:32all that. I'm so glad that he's doing well physically
- 6:35and he's healthy, but he hasn't really played a lot.
- 6:37He only played he's only played two years in the
- 6:39NFL missus rookie season. Uh, he did play last year
- 6:42he had they had a bunch of injuries, had to play.
- 6:45It just it's never worked out for him. It's and
- 6:47they you know, you go back to Houston. Tank Dell
- 6:50probably not going to play this season, but they have
- 6:52Niico Collins as a stud. They traded for Christian Kirk.
- 6:55They drafted Jayden Higgins, They signed Justin Watson, who's who
- 6:58could run. Jalen Wa was a third round pick. Xavier
- 7:01Hutchinson was a six round pick two years ago. He
- 7:03played a lot last year. It was gonna be hard
- 7:06for Metch to make the team. So this is so
- 7:08obvious why the Eagles made this trade. Not maybe at
- 7:10first because I was like, wait a minute, why, and
- 7:12then oh, yeah, upgrade.
- 7:14Speaker 3: There there's your answer.
- 7:15Speaker 1: That's true, right right, You're you're getting rid of a
- 7:17guy who you were clearly sold on not making the team,
- 7:20and you have an opportunity guy who could possibly again,
- 7:22like you said, it's not guaranteed if if he balls.
- 7:26And to go back to your point, yeah, Christian Kirk
- 7:28playing the slot in Houston, I think really solidified that.
- 7:31I mean, he's a pretty good receiver, Christian Kirk. So
- 7:33it was, by the way, Mechi.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Is the C.
- 7:36Speaker 1: But I remember when coming out of college, even Greg
- 7:39Cosell when we talked about him. He thought Mechi was
- 7:41going to be more of a slot receiver than why
- 7:43he's oute running well.
- 7:45Speaker 2: He runs great routes and he's got good sary quickness.
- 7:48He's not the biggest guy in the world, right and
- 7:52you you know that that was a knock on him,
- 7:54but man, it's he was a baller at Bama. Man,
- 7:57the kick the kid could play now again, that was
- 7:59then is now. They got to get him up to
- 8:02speed this week. You want to get him to play
- 8:03against the Jets on Friday night, and then you've got
- 8:07the two post training camp weeks leading up to the season.
- 8:11Being that they made the trade, it's likely he'll make
- 8:14the team. It's not a lock. There's no guaranteed money.
- 8:16He's on the Fani Vers rookie deal. If you look
- 8:18at the money, the cash, Mechi's one point eight oh
- 8:21five million. There's no guaranteed money. Harrison Bryant was making
- 8:26one point one seven million, seven twenty fully guaranteed. The
- 8:28Eagles were responsored forst thirty thousand dollars signing bonus. So,
- 8:33but the Texans really need a tight end so that
- 8:35I get that part of it. Yeah, we'll just say
- 8:37we'll see, we'll see how Mechi looks. But again, it's
- 8:39it's about a bit tentra upgrade. And I've never forget
- 8:42when Bill told me that, because I'd asked him it
- 8:45was related to something like this, like why would this
- 8:46team made that trade and make that trade? And he goes, Oh,
- 8:49if you can get an upgrade, you don't, it's a
- 8:51no brainer. It's not a really hard conversation, right, Interesting, Okay.
- 8:55Speaker 1: It also shows you what hell he does well is
- 8:57stockpile at positions and creates depth to where you can
- 9:01make trades like this. I mean this is also sort
- 9:02of like you trade Thomas Booker because you have a
- 9:05lot of de tackles young who, like you traded trade
- 9:08him to a team who needs a tackle. They don't
- 9:10make the Raiders that deal if the Christian Wilkins thing
- 9:13doesn't happen and they needed he tackled depth. So Booker
- 9:17was perfect for them, and the Eagles were able to
- 9:18get a corner who probably, like you know, probably will
- 9:22make it. We'll see. I mean, he could fall in
- 9:23his face, we don't know, but he's certainly in the mix.
- 9:26And we'll get to that when we talk about the
- 9:28preseason game, so interesting stuff there. There was one last
- 9:32point I wanted to make on Oh, let's say he balls.
- 9:35Let's say MITCHI does really well and makes a team.
- 9:37What do you think this is bad for on the Eagles?
- 9:40Because yeah, I feel like I'm Ania Smith and Johnny
- 9:45Wilson are are draft picks who've had pretty good camps.
- 9:48But how many Eagles are how many wide receivers are
- 9:50going to keep well?
- 9:52Speaker 2: Towris Marshall's been okay after coming back.
- 9:55Speaker 3: He well, he was balling out that he got hurt.
- 9:57Speaker 1: He mind, That's who came to my mind. I means Marshall.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Now now we'll see. I don't people are concerned about
- 10:04Darvis Cooper. I'm not personally. This is not a guy
- 10:07you want to wave and hope that he passes through waivers.
- 10:09Remember Joe Banner telling me, any player you wave if
- 10:11you're willing to lose. This would be awful if they
- 10:16if at the cutdown they cut Cooper, you subject to
- 10:19waivers and he got claimed by someone else, that that
- 10:22would that would keep me up at night. If IVE
- 10:24was on a personnel staff, that would bother me. I
- 10:26don't see it. Now, here's the question. We'll talk more
- 10:29about this in three weeks when we get to our
- 10:30cutdown shows.
- 10:32Speaker 3: But I was thinking maybe they keep six.
- 10:36Speaker 2: This this brings up a and I know it's hard
- 10:39because he goes love keeping lineman with They kept seven
- 10:42defensive tackles for about three weeks in twenty twenty three
- 10:45and they traded go Tavi Street. So it's hard, man.
- 10:48It's a numbers game, man, and you know you it's
- 10:51not easy. Teams don't loo because why would you keep
- 10:53six if you're only going to draft four or five?
- 10:55Typically five? Well, I mentioned this about Darvis Cooper. Remember
- 10:59Mechi's contracts up, Dodson's contracts up after the season. Marshall
- 11:05is on a one year deal. Everyone's is a one
- 11:07year deal. Where are you going past the season as
- 11:08a backup receiver? They have nobody?
- 11:11Speaker 1: True? True?
- 11:13Speaker 3: You always have to think for it, always think for it. Yep.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Definitely. So now he met you becomes what the how
- 11:19many guys from Alabama they have on this team at
- 11:21this point? Fourth? Fourth guy from Alabama? You got Dvante Smith,
- 11:25got Landon Dickerson, you got Tyler Steen, and I consider
- 11:29Jalen Hurts Oklahoma. But everybody he's like the only player
- 11:33that people do that for. Oh he's Alabama, right, every
- 11:36other player who's been to like two or three school
- 11:38whatever you always say he came from the like, like
- 11:40we don't say Lance Dixon de Penn STATEIU, he came
- 11:42from Toledo, right, all.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Right, Right, yeah, Dixon was with three schools.
- 11:46Speaker 2: But Stein didn't play with him, but Dickerson looked it
- 11:49up Smith and Dickerson did, right. Uh So yeah, and
- 11:53I'm sure Jalen knows him. So this is uh, this
- 11:56is interesting. Uh uh, he's a really good kid match up.
- 11:59So base the notes that have sent to me. Let's
- 12:01see one of the top Z receivers for the twenty
- 12:06twenty two drafts, second round forty fourth overall, five eleven
- 12:09and a quarter one to ninety. Not frail, but not
- 12:13not thick. So you know, that's why some people thought
- 12:16he might have to play inside. Known for route running,
- 12:21hands not sun but more quicker than fast. Had his
- 12:25shoulder injury late last season. Does not return punch kicks,
- 12:28but could cover on specials played. I think he led
- 12:32them in snaps for the first two preseason games at
- 12:34receiver and led them in the yard. So he's an
- 12:37interesting player. We'll see what happened. I love the smart
- 12:39how he trade nothing to lose. So, by the way,
- 12:41so the official trade was suming he passes the physical
- 12:46as expected. Mechi, Eagles get Mechi in a six round
- 12:51pick for next year and Harrison Bryant and they give
- 12:54a fifth rounder for next year in Harrison Bryant.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So they lose a round, big deal.
- 12:58Speaker 2: They still have thirteen or they're they're projected to have thirteen,
- 13:02is how he said, right, And.
- 13:04Speaker 1: By the way, those picks were the picks that they
- 13:05had already traded each other as part of the CJ.
- 13:08Gardner Johnson trade. They're just it almost like it's almost
- 13:11like they were very so the Kenyan Green thing didn't
- 13:14work out, and why don't we just give our trades
- 13:15bad money?
- 13:17Speaker 2: That that that that's just ridiculous. But it's hey, it
- 13:19is what it is. And I'm like, Eagle fans should
- 13:22be excited about John Metchi.
- 13:23Speaker 3: You have nothing to.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Lose, right, I understand, you know, once you get to
- 13:26the NFL, what you did in college doesn't matter. But
- 13:28he was a second round pick and he's got a
- 13:31lot of urgency here because he's on the finale, his
- 13:33rookie deal. He's just trying to make it. So we'll
- 13:35say and and again before we move on here very quickly.
- 13:39You guys have six tight ends here, well they keep three,
- 13:42that's the question.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, so that's good stuff. I am excited too,
- 13:46because I really like I have a I really enjoy
- 13:48watching like the great route runners of the league, and
- 13:51Metchi is very good with his feet that you mentioned
- 13:54at short area quickness, good routes. It's because a lot
- 13:56of times guys who project to be a slot or
- 13:58even a move z, if they think you're more slot,
- 14:01don't go that high in the second round. But he
- 14:03was a guy who could they I remember Scott saying
- 14:06he could play on the outside as a Z and
- 14:09that he was really an elite mover, like fluid mover
- 14:13and could get himself open. And that's why he got
- 14:16got drafted that high. So you're right, nothing to lose.
- 14:18And if he's healthy and he's strong and you know,
- 14:21fits in, he can make some noise here. He's got
- 14:22plenty of time. Was still three weeks to go, all right,
- 14:26let let's get into the what we know about the
- 14:29second preseason game. It was not a very pretty game.
- 14:32In fact, I feel like this is the second time
- 14:34the Browns and Eagles have played one of the ugliest
- 14:36preseason games I've ever seen in my life. If you
- 14:39would have told me the Eagles would not get one
- 14:42hundred total yards in this game, I would say, come on.
- 14:45But they did not. They did not even generate one
- 14:48hundred total offensive yards. The quarterbacks were not great. I
- 14:53know a lot of people like to say, well, they're
- 14:56behind the third string offensive line. Well, yeah, but they're
- 14:58also going up against you know, second and third stingers
- 15:00by the second half. Anyway, It's just it was not
- 15:03a I think the issue with dtr Adam, even though
- 15:06he had some really nice camp practices, now you've got
- 15:09him in a game environment. Now you've got him seeing
- 15:11a different defense, and his pocket poise and awareness or
- 15:16lack thereof really stands out in these moments because if
- 15:19he could just sort of climb a little bit, I mean,
- 15:22his arm is nice, he can make throws, but he
- 15:26will crumble when that pocket starts to pinch around him.
- 15:29And you saw some deflective passes and just some some
- 15:31skittishness there.
- 15:32Speaker 3: It was ugly.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yeah, the coaching termis feel it, don't see it. I
- 15:37use that one for you or somebody game, and I
- 15:38think it's it totally encapsulates what you just said. You
- 15:42have to play. You have to have a sense of timing. Okay,
- 15:45I better get rid of it or else. And you
- 15:48don't ever see the rush. You want to feel it,
- 15:50and he just didn't do a good.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Job of it.
- 15:52Speaker 2: If McCord had a touchdown pass, of course it nice.
- 15:54Smith had to reach back for it. You want to
- 15:56put it out for him.
- 15:56Speaker 3: That's a that's a truth. That's where the pass was.
- 15:59Speaker 1: But yeah, you know, uh yeah, I didn't Cord's touchdown
- 16:03drive was. It probably stuck out to people because he
- 16:07took over immediately and then he goes downfield and they
- 16:10score a touchdown. But you know, it wasn't like the
- 16:12most impressive drive. And you're right that pass was thrown around.
- 16:15If anything, I thought that the touchdown catch showed the
- 16:19value of having a true slot like a NYA Smith
- 16:23because unlike some pre unlike some preseason games where you
- 16:26know a team's not gonna play that kind of defense
- 16:28against that kind of formation, that was a spread like
- 16:32two by two, I believe, and you saw you see
- 16:34this all the time. Teams play man in the low
- 16:36red zone because I really want to blitz a lot.
- 16:39And so when you have a Nia Smith in the
- 16:43slot on the left side like he was in a
- 16:44man I'm in situation, he gets to run a two
- 16:47way and you saw him break quick out and then
- 16:49in and catch that slant. Those are the type of
- 16:51plays that team's beat the Eagles with last year with
- 16:54when they got CJ. Gardner Johnson matched up against the
- 16:57slot receiver. Right. Remember how we said CJ gave up
- 16:59about five or six low red zone touchdowns, So.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Then he cleaned it up there. Then he cleaned it up.
- 17:04Speaker 1: But yeah, they did, they moved they well, you know
- 17:06obviously Coopy did. Yeah, yeah, he did. Yeah yeah. Although
- 17:10the Washington game, I think he got the second one,
- 17:12the one they lost. But either way, the point is
- 17:14that's the value of a NYA Smith because if you
- 17:17put Johnny Wilson in the slot there, I think it's
- 17:19a little bit of a harder two way go. You
- 17:21can use him on a fade, but that's a lower
- 17:23percentage pass than just a two way go bam wide
- 17:26open like that.
- 17:27Speaker 2: By the way, to you may how you said it
- 17:29was ugly. Do you remember that? You know it was
- 17:31super ugly about that game two years ago in Philly
- 17:33against Cleveland. Oh man, uh, it was the dreaded tie. Oh,
- 17:41but a couple of things here. Tanner McKee had a
- 17:44really pretty good game. He ten for eighteen a touchdown.
- 17:48Here are your running backs for Shot Penny before he retired.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Oh you're talking about two years ago?
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Trey Sermon, Kennedy Brooks, Yeah, you
- 17:59like that, Tyre Jackson for another return for him. Joe
- 18:04and Gotto was not in the league. I don't think
- 18:05Greg Ward one of the fifty times he was on
- 18:07the Eagles. Oh my god, Alamide Sakias, Oh, here you go,
- 18:13Devin Allen. You know with his situation tyr Cleveland. There's
- 18:18who is Arnold d Arnold?
- 18:19Speaker 1: Who the hell was Arnold Darius Arnold? No, oh, I
- 18:23can see it. I don't remember his name.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Oh man, Oh, Dan Arnold, the tight.
- 18:29Speaker 1: End, Yeah, the tight end. That's right, that's right. I
- 18:34don't believe Ward was still so Brett Toff is becoming
- 18:38the Greg Ward of Julian Vandervelts.
- 18:40Speaker 2: I mean, I can't believe we didn't mention him that
- 18:44it's crazy with with Toth. We never brought up Julian. Yeah,
- 18:48he he was very good on Twitter on that. So yeah,
- 18:50it look at our notes here. This is I thought
- 18:53this is interesting. Not that Dylan played a lot, but
- 18:55Chipley didn't play. He's the two Dylan's the three only
- 18:58played six naps in the first quarter.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Pulled him. Charle Johnson took over for Dylan.
- 19:01Speaker 1: That's up.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Nice runs. One six yard run was nice.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I agree, It's just okay.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they started eleven personnel. Wilsons, a, Nyas and
- 19:09Cooper started. You mentioned to now here's the one that
- 19:12shocked me. I never saw Drew Kennell play left guard.
- 19:17It practiced at left guard at all, but he did
- 19:20in this game. He played left guard a little bit
- 19:21of left guard.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Woul Didn't he start camp as the third team left guard.
- 19:26Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I don't remember seeing it. Maybe you remember it. I
- 19:29don't remember seeing that. I talked to.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Told was the second team center when camp started, behind
- 19:36Cam Jurgens and then and Canard was still right on
- 19:39the right side and Stee not seeen. Kenyan Green opened
- 19:44as the third team left guard. So I think Kendall
- 19:47was the second team left guard, if I'm not mistaken,
- 19:50but as soon as they got him repping at center,
- 19:53he kind of stopped that.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Well, and remember Kegan had been in left guard. Maybe
- 19:57you're right, I don't recall that.
- 19:59Speaker 2: But here's the I talked to someone in scouting with
- 20:01another team, So what did you have on on Conley Goes?
- 20:06He's not a guard, he's the center. He will never
- 20:07make it a guard at this league. I'm like, that's strong.
- 20:10You al ready know this Goes. Yeah, that's where we're
- 20:12scouting departs the guy. I guess the guy who's ever
- 20:15scouted him, and then whoever did the whoever else turn
- 20:19on grades. They just don't think he was functionally strong enough.
- 20:22Speaker 3: I just that a solid. It's weird because he's done
- 20:24nice yell.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Because I remember people saying that about Cam Jurgens when
- 20:29the Ugos played him at right guard and he was
- 20:31only a tight end and then a center and small
- 20:34at that at Nebraska, and people didn't and myself included,
- 20:37I said, this guy, he's barely three hundred pounds. He's
- 20:39going to struggle, but he he wound up like Jeff
- 20:41Stoutlin has been able to do this before. So I know,
- 20:43we'll see, we'll see. I mean, at least he doesn't
- 20:46have to start. I mean he's really just auditioning to
- 20:48be the backup left guard.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Well he's right now the back up. He's got to
- 20:53be the backup center, Drew Kennall. He's really come on, man,
- 20:56that Cincinnati game is really good. I know overall that
- 20:58their line didn't play for chickularly well, uh pass pro
- 21:01in particular, there were some issues. Yeah, so it's something
- 21:05they're gonna have to work on. But again, you're you're
- 21:07talking about backups, not starters.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Right right, Although if Landon Nickerson doesn't make it back
- 21:13for the season opener, then then it's a question who
- 21:16starts left guard?
- 21:17Speaker 2: And not good, that's you don't want to go there,
- 21:19You don't want to go there.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if just based on you know,
- 21:24ear to the streets, if how we still wasn't done
- 21:28trying to improve areas that need depth and right now.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Oh of course that's what these trade By the way,
- 21:34that's what these trade calls are about.
- 21:35Speaker 3: The every GM text, every GM were you light? Were
- 21:39you heavy?
- 21:40Speaker 2: And they ask about players and either they say, hey,
- 21:42call me back, right, you know, call me back in
- 21:45two weeks. We'll have a better answer for you. One
- 21:47more note about listen to this one. You'll never get this.
- 21:51Guess who just don't look it up. Guess who started
- 21:52on the give me I wouldn't have got one of them.
- 21:56Get you want to take a guess of their offensive
- 21:58line against Cleveland two years ago and the preseason game.
- 22:01Speaker 1: I can't believe this offense line two years ago. Well,
- 22:06I'm gonna guess Tooth was on it.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Nope, he didn't.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I'm talking about starting starting, oh, starting offensive Well, you'll
- 22:12never get.
- 22:12Speaker 3: If you get one, i'd be shocked.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Well, you mean the first team are set, right, so
- 22:16the backups played?
- 22:17Speaker 2: I know, But again I won't believe this.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Go ahead, So I guess Tooth wasn't one of them.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Okay, how about how about the guy who was on
- 22:26injured reserve all last year from the Colts. What was
- 22:30his name? I can't think of it. You know what
- 22:32I'm talking about? No, do you know what I'm talking
- 22:34about though? Josh shild No, the offensive lineman they got
- 22:38from the Colts who played like a little bit of tackle,
- 22:41mostly guard, but he was on injured reserve practice squad.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Oh the tall guy, well, Raven Clark. No. But the
- 22:47reason why I said it is Josh Shill started left guard.
- 22:50Oh man, guess where Stein started? You might get this
- 22:56right tackle. Yep, okay, this one, and I vague I
- 23:00do remember this guy coming back. I just should have
- 23:02gave the hint. Guess who started center?
- 23:06Speaker 3: Don't look it, and I didn't.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I'm not looking. Uh. This is a great one. Uh.
- 23:12Two years ago he came out.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Of it, kind of came out. He wasn't retiring, but
- 23:17no people thought he was retiring. Josh Andrews, Oh my god, Josh,
- 23:21I know, dude, this is crazy.
- 23:23Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Sue a Peeda right guard, you'll never get the left tack.
- 23:26If you get the left tackle, I'd be shocked. This
- 23:30guy's definitely not a left tackle. I'll just give you
- 23:31a hint. He's no longer on the team and he's
- 23:33coming back from I think an ankle surgery.
- 23:35Speaker 3: I got nothing Jack dress Star left.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I was gonna.
- 23:41Speaker 3: He's really not a left tackle.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Oh man, Wow, that's crazy needlessness. That might have been
- 23:47a deeper, though offensive line than this year's version because
- 23:50Sue Opeta wound up making himself into a decent backup guard.
- 23:54And you know, we know Driscoll had plenty of starts
- 23:56in the league. Funny, that is really funny.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Hear the backups quick real quick are one of our
- 24:02favorite names of all time. Cameron Tom, not Tom Cameron,
- 24:05Cameron Tom yep, oh your guy, Julian good Jones and
- 24:10this guy this. When we sat when they brought him back,
- 24:13we said, this will never work because we we know
- 24:15he beat up physically Dennis Kelly. Remember, yes, I remember,
- 24:19remember that I had I had imagined because this is
- 24:21fun anyway.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah, so I didn't, but I didn't think. Listen, the
- 24:25Browns played a lot of starters, not all of them.
- 24:28They played starters on defense. And you know, I didn't
- 24:31think the Eagles offensive line was awful or terrible. I
- 24:34just think that they had a couple of issues at
- 24:35times in past pro But I thought both of the
- 24:37quarterbacks at times also held on to the ball a
- 24:40little a long, so that that's gonna happen.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Wait a minute, I don't let me.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Let me I do not believe they played any starters.
- 24:47They did not play any starters on defense. I thought
- 24:51line Now the only guy Dian But okay, so Dian,
- 24:54I mean Devin Busch may be yeah, you know what, technically.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I know it's on offense, but caught a pass, so
- 25:03I know.
- 25:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm just talking about defense.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, Uh, look like Sam Kamara, he's gonna make
- 25:09it the third edge. Casey he's a backup safety. Ronnie
- 25:16Hickman might not. Yeah, technically like Devin Bush and Jerome Baker, right,
- 25:21Schwesters is probably gonna start an yeah you could, let's
- 25:23put it this way there, some of their backups might
- 25:26be playing.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Yeah, but offensively, Finger is definitely a starter.
- 25:29Speaker 1: He just needed right.
- 25:30Speaker 2: He didn't start right, he didn't start, but he also
- 25:33didn't play. No. In fact, if you look at the starters,
- 25:35Greg Newsom starter did not play m.
- 25:39Speaker 3: I'm looking at it.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Schwestinger didn't start, didn't play their offensive Lineman didn't play.
- 25:45But Garrett of course didn't play. Harrod Fanner junor why
- 25:48did he play? That was Mason Grahame didn't play. I
- 25:50was disappointed and Joker Uh Cedar Tillman, Yeah, I don't know,
- 25:58that was really interesting. I was surprised because Judy didn't play.
- 26:02Tilman should be starting. I don't know why he wouldn't
- 26:04be starting.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Did you say that Joku did not play?
- 26:07Speaker 3: No, David and Joko did not play.
- 26:09Speaker 1: That's I must have got the uniform wrong because the
- 26:11play where Ojeli covered, that must have been eighty six then,
- 26:16because it looked like eighty five to me, and I
- 26:18thought it was an a Joku that that Ojeli covered
- 26:21and then made Gabriel hold onto the ball and then
- 26:23try to thread that window that what's his face picked
- 26:26that Jermacoba picked off. So maybe it was eighty six,
- 26:29but it looked like eighty five to me.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Here's a problem. See, here's an interesting thing. Dewan Jones
- 26:34might be their left tackle. He started, He he shouldn't
- 26:36be starting. He's really a right.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Tackle, right.
- 26:38Speaker 1: They wanted him to get work.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Clear, exactly like the Eagles did with Beck. Then last
- 26:43summer he was the one only started to play on offense. Yeah,
- 26:47but yeah it was it look get so we'll finish
- 26:49off with defense. Haul in Hall's fine come back with
- 26:53shoulders wey, Thank goodness young and Robinson started, but gab
- 26:57Hall shows good for him. I'm so glad Clint Hurt
- 26:59was able to reach him. That's what we talked about
- 27:01last year was that the scouting term as he was
- 27:04low burned, low energy, needed to be pushed.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Well, the light has gone on for this guy. He's
- 27:08got elite length.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Good story so far young and Robinson started at young
- 27:13just came up back from his scroin injury. But one
- 27:15of the good stories of the game is isjlari Is.
- 27:18He said, not look particularly great this summer, but man,
- 27:21he had at least, look at my notes, at least.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Three quality rushers.
- 27:24Speaker 2: One sack Q orange are basically if you get close enough,
- 27:27if you look explosive. He had one where he completely
- 27:30where he beat the guy but the quarterback got rid
- 27:32of the football. Ouche started and then I just I'd
- 27:37say this before we move on from this needed to happen.
- 27:40Speaker 3: He really needed. Not say they would have cut.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Him, but you needed to see some explosives from him,
- 27:45and you certainly saw.
- 27:46Speaker 1: That it was his Patrick Robinson moment at him where
- 27:49he shook off the all the the being invisible of
- 27:52Actually Patrick Robinson was actually awful. Terri hasn't been awful,
- 27:56He's just been invisible, but he certainly came through.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Yeah, Patrick Robinson was so bad.
- 28:02Speaker 2: It was one of the all time turnarounds in training camp,
- 28:05I'm like, wow, this Scott can't play anymore.
- 28:07Speaker 3: And then I don't know what happened, Like.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Maybe they moved him to the slot. That's what happened.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Was that? What was he playing safety?
- 28:14Speaker 1: It was a magazine on outside us camp.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, I didn't know. I don't I forgot but
- 28:20eight years ago. But man, he balled out and what
- 28:22a story he was. But look, well we'll see what
- 28:24happens here. So inside backers Trotter and Campbell started. Uh
- 28:30trot you know, there were a couple of places I'm
- 28:32sure he'd liked to have back Campbell's flashing. No decision
- 28:35has been made, but folks will continue to say this.
- 28:37First rounders don't sit if they're ready. That's just the
- 28:39way it works, right. See, if Campbell's ready to start
- 28:41or out, that'll be up to Vic.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Yeah. I thought Mondon played a way better game than
- 28:46he did against the Bengals. He was ever. You know,
- 28:48he had those two consecutive stops to start the second half.
- 28:51Uh well, there was one play where he struggled to
- 28:54get off a block, but that was the third down
- 28:56run where it was like third and five and they
- 28:59went spread and then they did the draw, so they
- 29:02literally there was only one guy in the box and
- 29:04it was mccouba, and he had a tackle come out
- 29:06and cover him up. So that's not mccouba. I'm sorry.
- 29:09It was Mandan as the only guy in the box
- 29:11because they were in a pass heavy look, thinking that
- 29:14the Browns were going to pass the ball on third
- 29:16and five or third and six, whatever it was. So
- 29:19the Eagles do this to teams a lot. They'll spread
- 29:20it out third and six and they hand it off
- 29:22and use their big offensive line to get big yards.
- 29:25He used to do it under Doug Peterson all the
- 29:27time and get success with it, so I don't really
- 29:29blame him for not getting off. I think it was
- 29:31Dewan Jones's block there. That's tough, But in general, I
- 29:34thought the inside linebackers played well. I like that Vic
- 29:37showed you his signature sim pressure or creeper pressure if
- 29:41you will, which is you know Ojulari was dropping or
- 29:44no uce on that played dropped the second play of
- 29:46the game, and Campbell just shot the gap and you
- 29:48could see the beautiful Yeah, the protection scream of the
- 29:51Browns was not ready for that, and he went right
- 29:54through and got the sacks.
- 29:55Speaker 2: I can't wait if he's starting Week one, you know
- 29:58it's gonna I know Vic doesn't like the blitz, but
- 30:00I've talked about three years. Linebacker coaches love inside backers
- 30:04who can who can rush. It's it's such an added bonus. Yep,
- 30:08he doesn't have to line up outside. You could rush
- 30:10him from the inside, just like you talked about. Mom
- 30:12had actually played it. Tell you he played fifty percent
- 30:14of the snaps.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Yeah, so that was good.
- 30:17Speaker 3: You know, he's got really good length.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Not know, he's not a wide body, clearly not uh
- 30:22at safety mccouba and Brown started we know about Obviously
- 30:25he had the two big plays to pick six, the
- 30:27fumble recovery. But the thing with him is he plays
- 30:30downhill man. That this kid he could play nickel, he
- 30:33could cover. He had five picks last year. This kid's
- 30:37a player, man. He and the thing was, he's another guy.
- 30:40Second round picks typically don't sit if they're if they're
- 30:43if they're mentally ready. If if Vic thinks he's ready,
- 30:46he's better football player than Brown.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Let's call it like it is.
- 30:48Speaker 2: He just has way more to him, especially in covers.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Than city does.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, and look this thing is still going. If
- 30:56anybody thought that round one won this competition because mccoub
- 31:00was out for a little bit, Nope, it's a competition.
- 31:02And just like you said, with the first round pick,
- 31:04not always this case with the second round pick. But
- 31:06if it's tie, it's gonna go to Drew mccouba because
- 31:10he's the second round pick.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 31:11Speaker 2: People always ask I always hate this question. Who do
- 31:14they want to start? Of course, folks, they want this.
- 31:15The guy's the higher draft pick of who's making more money.
- 31:17Speaker 1: That's what they want and more years of cost control left,
- 31:20you know, right right, So, and this is Brown's third
- 31:24year was for year Rockie deal.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I'm glad he's healthy and it'll help them with special teams.
- 31:28But it Drew is just you see the way that
- 31:30he moves and great energy, super smart guy.
- 31:34Speaker 3: And look if if for the future, if they move
- 31:36coop to safety, mccoba could be their neco next year.
- 31:41We'll see what happens.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Plus, I do think that there's a there's potentially a
- 31:44role for it's not Sidney Brown has played fine, he's
- 31:46learning the defense. I think he's looked good. So if
- 31:49they want to play some versatile three safety packages. They
- 31:52have the ability to do that, getting Brown right, Yeah, absolutely.
- 31:56Speaker 2: They don't really do that with Vick here. They haven't
- 31:57done really since Denver.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Probably haven't had like the personnel to do it.
- 32:03Speaker 3: Yeah ball the way mccollull had them and snaps. Yeah.
- 32:08Speaker 2: So and they know what he's a for safety, but
- 32:10that's you know, I know Vic likes him, but the
- 32:11reality is he's a force safety.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely. And then at corners, obviously you saw Ringo
- 32:18and Jack and start now Ringo again. You know, we
- 32:21talk about this. He was a little I don't know
- 32:23if you want to say slow or late or didn't
- 32:25get his hips turned fast enough on that third down
- 32:29crossing route, and because he was late on it, he
- 32:32got caught up in the wash of the which is
- 32:34exactly what the play is designed to do. But a
- 32:36good smart corner can get a beat on that, get
- 32:38his way through the traffic, or get there before the
- 32:41traffic even starts to pile up. But he got caught
- 32:43up between I think it was Jamari Thrash caught the ball,
- 32:47had time to turn upfield and got the extra yardage.
- 32:51I mean, it's just one play, but it's sort of
- 32:53like highlights that these are the kind of plays that
- 32:55Killer Ringo has got to start to like tighten up.
- 32:57And you know Vic, you'll hear Vic say he's got
- 33:00to play more football and learn how to deal with
- 33:02those situations.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and this is why OTA's folks, it's double a
- 33:06baseball if you use this turn this phrase for years
- 33:09and it really hasn't changed. You got to be careful
- 33:11of hype of any player, not just a corner in
- 33:13ots I means very little. He's been unable to carry
- 33:17this is two years now. He's not carried over the
- 33:20outstanding OTA's. It's it's almost like it's never happened. I
- 33:22hate to say that, but he's just not carried over.
- 33:25He got beat for the third cornerback job last year
- 33:27after one week. A guy who didn't play football the
- 33:29year before beat him out in Isaiah Rodgers. Great story
- 33:32from Rodgers, who parlayed that into a really good season,
- 33:35got a nice to agent deal with the Vikings and Ringo.
- 33:39It's just just because you have got the height, weight
- 33:43and speed doesn't make you a great football player. I
- 33:45think we're all learning that. But there's time here. He's
- 33:47kind of running out here kind of running out and
- 33:50that Dory Jackson. See here's the thing, here's the quick
- 33:53and Bennett hurt his arms. So we'll see if he's
- 33:55available this week. Let me ask you this question. It's
- 33:57a starting corner opposite Quina Mitchell on this football team.
- 34:04Speaker 1: That's a great question. I think it. I think it is.
- 34:08I just don't think it's gonna have great results early on.
- 34:14I like do I think that very very could Howie
- 34:18Rose and Paul off for trade for a true starting
- 34:20corner before the season opener, like he did with say
- 34:24getting the nickel when he got to Gardner Johnson. Sure,
- 34:27but you have to tell me who's available, you know, Nichols.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Well, I hear you. Starting credit for a starting.
- 34:34Speaker 1: He's giving one up, right.
- 34:35Speaker 3: I get that now.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Bennett was buried on their depth chart with the Raiders
- 34:38because he was coming back from the shoulder surgery.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Right, And and he's not, to be honest and fair,
- 34:43he's not like a proven starting corner either. He's right,
- 34:46you know, he got he was on a bad team,
- 34:48so he did a good job for you.
- 34:49Speaker 2: He got hurt last year. But yeah, I hear you.
- 34:51I just I know the way how he thinks he's not.
- 34:54He's just not accepted. If he doesn't work, you're just
- 34:56not gonna stand. You're not gonna throw your hands up.
- 34:58You got picked for next year. I mean, if it
- 35:01doesn't work, go get to one. But on your point,
- 35:04it's gonna to me, it would have to be more
- 35:06of a situation like Bennett, who's better to depth, Charter's
- 35:08got it, who would high grades?
- 35:09Speaker 3: Whose tape has actually been pretty good in.
- 35:11Speaker 2: The NFL, who just needs Look how he's had, He's
- 35:14done really well with this kind of stuff. Yeah, you know, look,
- 35:19you just never know. But I can't. He's not gonna
- 35:21stand idly by. And obviously they're having these kind of
- 35:23discussions internally, and you know this is what this is
- 35:27what happens a couple of weeks before the season starts.
- 35:29You start saying, Okay, if this doesn't get better, what
- 35:31are we doing?
- 35:32Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, Now some people were a little like I guess,
- 35:36surprised that Brandon Johnson, Yeah, a nickel role. But if
- 35:39you've been following along, you know, whether it's Andrew de
- 35:41czech O daily or his notes or even us talking.
- 35:44Mac McWilliams is also getting cross trained on the outside
- 35:48happened about started happened about a week and a half
- 35:50or maybe after the first preseason game, where they're giving
- 35:53him more outside looks, which Vic said he was going
- 35:55to do. He's evaluating him at outside and Nickel at
- 35:58corner and nicol. So obviously, if mac McWilliams is not
- 36:02going to be playing nickel, then you need nickel and
- 36:04Cooper Jean's not playing in this game in general. So
- 36:07Brandon Johnson's had a decent camp, by the way, I
- 36:09think he's actually showed some pretty good awareness and alertness
- 36:12and made some plays. But he's not going to make
- 36:15the fifty three. I mean, I just can't see that happen. Yeah,
- 36:18I agree, I agree, but it happens to be next
- 36:20man up at that position.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and mac mcwain has been a really nice story
- 36:23who they've crosstrained a little bit on the outside.
- 36:26Speaker 3: So that that's pretty much it. By the way, one
- 36:29more note for you for that.
- 36:30Speaker 2: I just think this is funny two years ago who
- 36:33started against Cleveland the preseason game. Almost all these players
- 36:36are gone, Dark Barnett gone, Zach Cunningham gone with Detroit,
- 36:43Mario Goodrich, I know who's working out for I don't
- 36:45even know if he's in the league. Josh Job now
- 36:47he's revived his career well with Seattle. Zach McPherson. I
- 36:50think it was Wave injured. I think he got hurt
- 36:51somewhere as Waved injured, Terrell Emans and Kevon Wallace. So basically,
- 36:57in summary, what do we see. Gabe Hall showed up,
- 37:00It's been a good story. Development, Macouba showed up. It
- 37:02wasn't just those two plays. He's closing in on. He's
- 37:06closing in on that job. Nothing official. Brown's still technically ahead,
- 37:09mccooba's doing well, Ringo's got to pick it up. They
- 37:12may not have a number two corner right now, but overall,
- 37:16it's not.
- 37:17Speaker 3: The end of the world.
- 37:18Speaker 2: At Peoples a preseason game, don't read much into it.
- 37:21It's all about the backups of development. We'll see what
- 37:23happens this week. By the way, they got free practice.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Definitely a lot, a lot, a lot going on this week.
- 37:28Speaker 3: All right, That is gonna.
- 37:29Speaker 4: Do it for this episode of Inside the Birds, the
- 37:32leading podcasts and Eagles Intel, and as always, we thank you.
