- 0:06SPEAKER_01: Hi guys, welcome back to Skin Care Anarchy.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: This is Ekta, and I have such a phenomenal guest for you guys today.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: I had a mission in mind when I started Skin Care Anarchy that one day I would have the honor of hosting her.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: So today is that day.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to Olivia Palermo, who is um the creative genius behind her brand new line, Olivia Palermo Beauty.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: So welcome to the show, Olivia.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: I'm so, so honored that you have the time for this.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: It's such a pleasure to be here.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: And thank you for taking the time and congratulations on your podcast and all of your success.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: I would love to get started and learn all about your career and your journey because I know you have such an interesting background and you know you are such a renowned name and like fashion and everything that has to do with style.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: So I want to learn about everything that led to this.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, well, I think that you know, it was going into beauty in this chapter, this next chapter into the brand, it really made sense.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: It was something that I have wanted to do for quite some time and finding the right partner to make that happen.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: It's it started about like two and a half years ago, actually.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: We kind of started the whole process and then the whole world shut down with Corona.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: So um we kind of we pushed it and made sure that when we launched, it was the right time and not only in the world, but also for us as a brand.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: And you know, I approach this whole beauty line similar to what I do within fashion, is you know, we have um, you know, pretorte, so we have pre bute as well.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: And just, you know, the way that you approach it, you know, having key statement pieces in your wardrobe that you can invest into, which is so important.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Um, and you know, as as we build, it's a small collection as and we will build into having more products down the road.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: But you know, we want to, I really tried to take a look at the marketplace and see, you know, what was missing.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: And what I noticed was craftsmanship and quality when you hold the package, that luxury feeling.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And so we really took the time within the exterior packaging and also um the product itself to make sure that you know it was equal hand in hand of the quality and luxury experience.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: No, and it shows.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, I want you know, when I first opened, for example, you know, the lipsticks and the eyeshadow palettes, they're absolutely stunning.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, you really knocked it out of the park with the packaging, obviously.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: But also, you know, as a woman of color, one thing that I really love is that the palettes that you put together are so like beautifully like the colors match so well.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: So doing an eye look is very, very it's easy and it still looks amazing.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: So I want to talk about that, like how you chose the color combinations and you know, all of that, the whole process for you.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, well, thank you.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: That's so nice to hear.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: I really appreciate that because you know, color is something that's so important within, you know, getting dressed and also within makeup and you know, the colors of how it looks on me looks different on you know, people like girls on my team.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: So we want to make sure that we find the right shades of all the pops of color that complement um, you know, for everyone for the most part, as much as that we can.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Um, and you know, just like adding that pop of color, whether it is the purple or it's the blue, you can do it in, you know, a day vibe, and you can also do it in, you know, an evening vibe.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: It's just it's about how you wear it.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: You can use it as an eyeliner, you could use it as like a full eye as well.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, and it shows.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, I think um the best part is like, you know, in today's world, like, you know, for me, like when I go to the hospital, like most of my eye looks are like neutral, you know, like I want to keep it very low key.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: And you've provided that in your palettes.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I I think that kind of shows overall in your in your line in general, you know, if we look at your fashion as well.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: So um is that something that you've always like that's your style always, or is that has that evolved into like a more um like neutral based?
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Because that's what I feel when I look at your stuff.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I think, I think definitely, you know, uh everyone always tends to go for a uniform of some sorts.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: And I always love warmer colors, you know, the browns, the purples.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Um, because you know, it really compliments, you know, my eye, and you can make it versatile where you can have more of a you can go deeper in the color range for the evening than you can during the day.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: But it does go back to playing with the textures, and you know, as we get dressed, we play with different patterns and textures.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: So the collection, I wanted to reflect that as well because you know, we're always styling, we're styling, you know, our fashion, we're styling our makeup to some extent, and you know, how you wear it and playing with different textures of makeup um is really important and it shows, you know, even in the softer, warmer tones, it just you know, there it it it really makes you gives you an illuminating look.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: And you know, um, everyone listening, if you haven't already checked out Olivia Palermo's beauty line, you are missing out.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: So please go do that.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: But no, I I want to actually I want to talk more about you because I know that you have such an amazing background.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Um, I know that you went, you know, you studied in Paris and stuff.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Could you tell us like a fun story or a memory that you have um when you were kind of learning everything and um all that good stuff?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: You know, I think um I really was so fortunate to study uh university in Paris at the American University.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And the one thing that, you know, you've less uh I think I probably learned more outside the classroom than I did inside, just being immersed because AUP at the time was so international with so many different cultures around.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: It was really eye-opening and incredible being in a city like Paris and seeing the incredible fashion and the way that women and men got dressed.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And so I think that there was always, as an adult, some sort of foundation of inspiration, definitely from that luxury um time at the school.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Um and I really learned about international fashion and about international fashion houses and craftsmanship and quality in a way that America does not have.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: And I've just been really lucky and fortunate that for the last 10 plus years, that the majority of my career has been in Europe.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Um, so I've been able to really be able to connect from you know my study days of feeling like Paris is a second home, then to being an adult and working there and spending, you know, many, many weeks out of the year in Paris, which is really nice, but also looking at it from a different lens.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I'm sure it gives you such a unique perspective because you know, I think um I was talking to somebody a while ago and I said, you know, when you have like an international perspective on things and you approach it from that lens, it is um, you know, what comes out, the end product is is very unique, you know.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: So I I wanna I want to actually ask you a follow-up question to that.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: What do you think is like, you know, some of the pillars that you've noticed about um design or you know, fashion that is international on an international level, like things that you think everybody really kind of gravitates towards, if you've noticed any trends.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Well, I think the trends are always changing.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I think the time and how people wear fashion or perceive fashion changes so much, especially with social media.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: I think you know, maybe more of fat high-end fashion forward trends that you used to see a bit more, you see a little less of because you have more of Instagram trends that kind of filter throughout.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: If that makes sense, yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Um, I think there is something to be said of you know, still going to, you know, fashion magazines and looking through the editorials and you know the beautiful imagery and the inspirations of those uh fashion shoots.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: You know, I think there is something that we can still all learn from.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: And I actually want to, you know, I want to comment on your lipstick um shades because they're actually very, very flattering, I think, almost for any skin tone and any color.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: And I want to talk about how you picked your red because the red, it's just it's such a bright, beautiful color, but it's I it fits everybody's skin tone.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: I feel like anyone can put it on and feel so fabulous.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: So how did you how did you go about that picking that color?
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I have a few reds at home that I've I like, and I don't uh I wear reds in the summer, and you know, so depending on like my outfit and my mood, and of course it's you know a real statement, and you want to make sure you get it correctly and you don't want it to move too much as well.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think that my aunt always uh wears red lips, and so I've kind of from a young age had a good sense of you know the if it's too blue and you know, if it's too coral.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And so I had a specific color range in in my head, and um, I'm really, really happy with the color that we picked because I really do think it it really suits everyone.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: It gives it a really nice pop of color, yeah, and it's very summery.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: I love how summer it is.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, it's it's like it's that kind of vintagey vibe if you think of the retro of like 1950s, or even if you think of you know Lucille Ball and the the coral.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, you did not just say Lucille Ball, she is literally my favorite of all I learned English from Lucille Ball, seriously.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: You did?
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: That's so fabulous.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when I came here, I used to watch um I Love Lucy um every night, and that's how I learn English.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: So I love wasting your finger card now.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: No, but I think you're so right.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: It's a very classic look, and I think your whole line is actually, you know, that's I was gonna mention that.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: It's like you've really um you've you maintained this look about it that's it is very classic beauty, you know.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Like it makes me think of, you know, back in the day, Marilyn Monroe and you know, all the really big actresses, you know, that we used to just, I guess now we talk about, but you know what I mean?
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Like I I love it.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: So was that something intentional, or did you have to like kind of you know argue with people and say, no, this is what I want, you know, this is my vision, or like I want to know more about them.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Um I have uh you my partners, they're they're great to work with and they really understood the vision from the creative side of what we were looking to achieve.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: And so I think, you know, really starting from scratch and finding you know, I Art Deco is of course a big inspiration to kind of taking that Art Deco feel and also using a bracelet that I've worn throughout the years and kind of giving an homage to this gold bracelet um to kind of play off the chain links um and kind of set some branding branding foundation of gold accessories that we all love.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: And you know, as I get dressed, accessories are so important.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: So it really kind of made perfect sense.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it makes sense.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: And also, like I want to actually ask you because your prime time, the serum is actually phenomenal.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Like, how did you how did you choose to make that product?
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: Like, why did you pick to make a serum like um like a prime serum?
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Like, what was the inspiration for that?
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, we really wanted to start like going into like hero pieces, into your wardrobe, entering the skincare space as well.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: We felt that an illumining illuminating serum was great.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Also, you know, going back to styling, you can mix you mix it with your serums in the morning or the evening, or if you just want to use it as a little highlighter at the end of you know the details for your makeup, you can do that as well.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Um, and I really took inspiration from the color palette throughout my travels.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: You can see it has a very kind of Mediterranean or Caribbean feel with the sea foam greens, the kind of champagne gold, and dark, darker greens on the skincare bottle.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: And I really wanted it to make sure that it could sit on a beauty counter, not only for my my women, but also for my men as well, and that they both can use the product and feel amazing.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: And so far, I've asked all of my guy friends and my husband, and they use the skincare and get they get compliments and look like they just got facials every day.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: So I was like, I feel like I'm doing something right.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: That is amazing.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: No, it's absolutely wonderful.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, the serum is very luxurious, like you know, and it feels like a good product, like you can you can feel the quality in your entire line, you know, and that's really something that I think very few brands can say.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I've interviewed a lot of founders and I've tried a lot of things at this point, and you know, you can immediately tell when a brand has like almost, I guess, done it right.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: You know, if that makes sense.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: Um how long did it take to formulate everything?
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Like, how long did it take to put this um together and like really come out with your um, you know, your main products?
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Well, we started two years ago, and you know, we really wanted to launch in the fall, but you know, we waited.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: So it's been uh work in progress, and I'm really I'm super excited about it.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Um, and I did want I going back to the illuminating serum, um, one thing I don't know if you noticed, but it has a lavender tone to it, which is like really beautiful on like all skins.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Did you notice that?
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: It's a beautiful, like it looks like at first it looks gray, but then you see the lavender in it.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: It's absolutely stunning.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: And the uh setting spray, which I love because it has a rose water um smell to it, and it's it's just a very refreshing.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: You can use it in the morning after your skincare routine, or you can use it to set your makeup and it does not move your makeup at all.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of amazing when we're going in and out of cars with our masks.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: We want to make sure that no foundation or powder or lipstick rubs off.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: And I think it's also like very in line with like the everyday like woman who you know doesn't have a lot of time, but you know, you want to look amazing.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: And I mean, I love that you've come out with like the range that you have because you know, for me, especially like I can say as a consumer, like I hate having like 15 things in my bag that I take to the hospital, you know, for work.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: So it's like if I can have your solid kit.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: So I think you've really like every single product and every single uh um item in your line, it's just like it's a home, you know, home remote.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: That's so nice.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Well, I really appreciate that.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: I'm so happy that you're happy.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: Um, I want to actually ask you a little bit about your philanthropic um, you know, just journey in the past because I know that you're um involved with some initiatives.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: And if you could tell us a little bit about, you know, your vision and um goals with that end of your business.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: I've been working with Just for Success for the last few years, and you know, I found that it was I for every day, I just you know, it it was really important for me to find something that I connected with.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: And um working with trust for success has been incredible.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: The women have been so inspiring, and just to go in, chat with them, and whether it's women going into the workplace for the first time or coming back into the workplace, you know, 10, 20 years later, and helping find those tools to um find new jobs and find great wardrobes um each week.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: And my job was to kind of come in and help them be able to um have a wardrobe and style them in so many different ways and show them how to wear clothes in different ways and making them feel as confident as I could.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: And it was just it was so amazing.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: These women were so strong and just it it really warmed my heart.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: So I'm super happy to have been working with them for the last few years.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: I think that that's so important to like, you know, people always talk about like women empowerment, but it's like the the feeling you get when you're dressed up and you look nice and you feel prepared, you know, for an interview or something.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: That's a whole different um, you know, it's a whole different arena.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: So I love that.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: It's a really great initiative.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: And you know, and I also think you know the world has changed so much, and you know, I'm all about knowing for myself what how to dress for my environment, what's appropriate and what's not, and you know, different workplaces, different wardrobes, and you know, just kind of figuring out uh the science for each person.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: I think you know it's it's really fun to see them go through that.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: I love that, and I love I love that you're so involved in it.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's you know, there's a lot of initiatives out there, but I think this is such a hands-on project, you know what I mean?
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: It's so like it's a daily impact kind of thing, and I really like that um your focus is on that.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: I actually want to ask you though, Olivia, like growing up, like you know, just and you know, as you were a design student and learning about all the amazing things, like who were some of your inspirations and um women or men that you looked up to or you know, really admired for their work?
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I really took a look at international fact fashion magazines throughout uh the world.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: That was super inspiring seeing the layouts, the different designers, different markets, um, history of fashion books, uh, documentaries, um, that sort of thing really resonated with me.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: Um it's awesome.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: What kind of documentaries?
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: I'm a huge documentary nerd.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Me too.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: It can really be anything.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: It could be like, you know, history of the UK or the US or, you know, of a specific person, or it could be of, you know, um, nature was David Attenborough.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: It could be really anything that I can pull inspiration from.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: There's a really good show.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: I think you might like it.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: It's about like the hidden buildings in the United Kingdom that were like once castles or something.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: I was watching it.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Architecture, I'm sure, is absolutely stunning.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: You know, I that's also a huge thing within fashion.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: You know, we always look to architecture as well as for inspiration.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think it's definitely a huge form of design and art.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: So that makes sense.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Well, I, you know, I want to I don't want to take up too much of your time, Olivia, but I want to end the episode and I want to ask you what are some of your go-to things, um, whether it's for fashion or style or things that you just can't live without, other than your line, of course.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: That's a good question.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: Um, what I can't live without, I can't live without plaza, my manicure spot here in New York, can't live without them.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Um, I cannot live without my Maltese dog, Mr.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Butler.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: He's 16, he's getting up there.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: It's worrisome.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Well, but you know, it comes with age and life.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Um, and what else can I not live without?
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: I probably my husband.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: He's quite amazing and a great support system.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'll take him.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: And also one more question.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: What about skincare?
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: What's your what's your routine for skincare?
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: My skincare routine, just like everything else, is very high maintenance.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Um and um, you know, my hair care, I get my haircut um and colored every three weeks by my longtime friends, um, Abby and Andre Davis.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: And I go and see Robert Analek um every three weeks, my dermatologist, just to check in because your skin is always changing.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Um, and you just want to make sure you're using the right things, or if you know your skin needs a little extra zhuzh.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: And I go each week to my other dermatologist, Dr.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Dennis Gross's office, who I've seen since I was 14.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: And I get my um chemical peel, and um, I do a little like it's like a heat collagen, which kind of regenerates your skin a little bit and gives you a little bit of glow.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: And then I go to Joanna Vargas for the red light bed, and I love her um radio frequency facials and triple crown facials.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: And then for my beauty products, I'm religious about my one-on-one skin, and I see the one-on-one skin team when I'm in London.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: Um, so you know, I make sure that I have my dermatologists in Germany, in London, and New York.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: So I have a great team of experts that I work with regularly.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Um, and let's see what Dr.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: Giannis, Dr.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: Giannis and Eva are phenomenal people.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Like I love one-on-one skin.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Yes, they're incorporated into my skincare on a daily basis.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: They're amazing.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: Their skincare range is amazing.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: So I use Dr.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Dennis Gris's cleanser and one-on-one skin cleanser.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and for hair care products, I have been using Mel Bon, a Japanese company, for um since actually um for probably the last like nine months.
