- Lucas: Hello again, and welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. We're so glad you're joining us for another little lesson. Lucas: Today, we're going to do something super practical. We're going to talk about buying a bus ticket. Luna: Oh, that's useful. I actually tried to do that last week and I just froze. Lucas: Exactly why we're covering it. So if you're traveling in East Africa, this will help you a lot. Luna: Right. So let's start with the first thing you need to know. Lucas: First, you need to find where to buy the ticket. You'd ask: Tikiti iko wapi? Luna: Tikiti iko wapi? Does that mean 'where is the ticket?' Lucas: Yes, exactly. Tikiti means ticket, iko wapi means where is. So literally, 'ticket is where?' Luna: Oh, that makes sense. Tikiti iko wapi? I'll remember that. Lucas: Great. Now once you find the ticket office, you need to say you want one ticket. Nataka tikiti moja. Luna: Nataka tikiti moja. So nataka is 'I want', like we learned before. Lucas: Exactly. And moja is one. So 'I want one ticket.' Nataka tikiti moja. Luna: Nataka tikiti moja. That's easy. Lucas: Now, if you want to know the price, you ask: Tikiti moja ni bei gani? Luna: Tikiti moja ni bei gani? That's a bit longer. Lucas: Let's break it down. Tikiti moja is one ticket, ni means 'is', bei gani means 'what price'. So together: 'One ticket is what price?' Luna: Okay, so Tikiti moja ni bei gani? Let me try that. Tikiti moja ni bei gani? Lucas: Perfect. And the answer might be something like 'Shilingi elfu tano' – five thousand shillings. But we'll get to numbers another time. Luna: Good, because I still struggle with numbers above twenty. Lucas: Ha, we'll get there. Now, let's say you want to go to Mombasa. You'd say: Nataka kwenda Mombasa. Luna: Nataka kwenda Mombasa. Kwenda means 'to go', right? Lucas: Exactly. So 'I want to go to Mombasa.' Nataka kwenda Mombasa. Luna: So I can use that with any place. Nataka kwenda shule? I want to go to school? Lucas: Yes, that works. Nataka kwenda shule. You're getting good at this. Luna: Yay. Lucas: Now, when you're ready to actually buy, you say: Nipe tikiti moja, tafadhali. Luna: Nipe tikiti moja, tafadhali. So nipe is 'give me'? Lucas: Yes. Nipe means 'give me'. Tafadhali is 'please'. So 'Give me one ticket, please.' Nipe tikiti moja, tafadhali. Luna: Nipe tikiti moja, tafadhali. That's polite and direct. Lucas: And if you want to ask for two tickets, you'd just change moja to mbili. But let's keep it simple with one for now. Luna: Good, because I don't want to overwhelm my brain. Lucas: We don't want that. So let's practice all five phrases together. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: First: Tikiti iko wapi? Luna: Tikiti iko wapi? Lucas: Nataka tikiti moja. Luna: Nataka tikiti moja. Lucas: Tikiti moja ni bei gani? Luna: Tikiti moja ni bei gani? Lucas: Nataka kwenda Mombasa. Luna: Nataka kwenda Mombasa. Lucas: Nipe tikiti moja, tafadhali. Luna: Nipe tikiti moja, tafadhali. Lucas: You did great. Let's put them into a little scene. Luna: Yes, I love scenes. Lucas: So you walk up to the ticket window. You say: Tikiti iko wapi? Luna: And the person points to the window and says 'Hapa' – here. Lucas: Then you say: Nataka tikiti moja. Luna: Then they ask: Kwenda wapi? Where to? And you say: Nataka kwenda Mombasa. Lucas: Then they tell you the price, and you ask: Tikiti moja ni bei gani? Just to make sure. Luna: Then you say: Nipe tikiti moja, tafadhali. Lucas: Perfect. That's a full conversation. Luna: But wait – what if I want to go somewhere else? Like Dodoma? Lucas: You just change the place. Nataka kwenda Dodoma. Or nataka kwenda Arusha. Easy. Luna: Nataka kwenda Arusha. Oh, that's nice. Lucas: You're a natural. Luna: I'm just glad I finally know how to ask for a ticket without pointing at everything. Lucas: That's progress.
