- 0:17Speaker 1: As you know, this morning announced my decision to begin
- 0:22Speaker 1: a search for the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguards,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the announcement followed a very warm and positive discussion
- 0:32Speaker 1: I had with Doug this morning and also obviously last
- 0:37Speaker 1: week and over the last year. As difficult as if
- 0:42Speaker 1: occasion was for both Doug and myself, I mean, it
- 0:45Speaker 1: served a reminder of Doug's quality as a head coach
- 0:50Speaker 1: and a person. There's no doubt in my mind that
- 0:54Speaker 1: this is the time to make a change in the
- 0:56Speaker 1: best interests of the football team, community and especially our fans.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Welcome to jag Zam.
- 1:05Speaker 3: It's official the off season.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I'm Penannie Stevens, John Oserbryan with me, brand section with
- 1:09Speaker 2: me today as well, and we've been talking about changes.
- 1:12Speaker 2: We knew they were going to come. We got one
- 1:13Speaker 2: change right out of the gate on Monday. We'll start
- 1:16Speaker 2: out with our big thing. There are only two of
- 1:18Speaker 2: them today. One goes that does put Peterson the head
- 1:21Speaker 2: coach has been fired.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Let go.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Shat kind of explained a little bit of his reasoning.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Last year we started off eight and three and then
- 1:28Speaker 1: went one in five, okay, and didn't make the playoff.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Was the winning season but didn't make the playoffs. And
- 1:35Speaker 1: after that, you know, I started really right in Nashville,
- 1:40Speaker 1: sat down with Doug, Okay, what are.
- 1:42Speaker 3: We going to do?
- 1:43Speaker 1: And he identified, you know, on the defensive side, we
- 1:47Speaker 1: needed to change the staff and so on. And as
- 1:52Speaker 1: the season you know, progressed it, you know it. Obviously
- 1:59Speaker 1: we weren't doing well. We were close like yesterday, but
- 2:03Speaker 1: not close enough to win the game. And then as
- 2:08Speaker 1: I spoke to you know, Doug even last week for
- 2:13Speaker 1: a good length of time, you know, I just came
- 2:16Speaker 1: to the conclusion what we were doing was not working
- 2:20Speaker 1: and a change in direction was needed.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Brian, I don't think there's a huge surprise to this. Obviously,
- 2:27Speaker 2: it's the results oriented business team did not win. Doug
- 2:29Speaker 2: Peterson out as head coach.
- 2:31Speaker 3: What are your thoughts?
- 2:31Speaker 4: Well, this was the simple one.
- 2:33Speaker 5: You know, we heard all season long that they have
- 2:35Speaker 5: to learn, we have to teach them how to win
- 2:38Speaker 5: these close games. And there were enough examples. There were
- 2:41Speaker 5: thirteen one score games and the Jaguars went three to ten,
- 2:44Speaker 5: and at some point it became a self fulfilling prophecy.
- 2:48Speaker 5: Doug kept talking about what they needed the players to do.
- 2:51Speaker 5: And how they were attacking things in the meeting room
- 2:54Speaker 5: and on the practice field and it didn't work. They
- 2:57Speaker 5: didn't learn how to win close games. We all witnessed,
- 3:00Speaker 5: We lived that all season long, and so I think
- 3:04Speaker 5: that made the owner's choice relatively simple.
- 3:08Speaker 4: They had an opportunity.
- 3:09Speaker 5: They knew what the problems were, and they couldn't solve it.
- 3:13Speaker 5: He didn't have confidence John that they would go into
- 3:15Speaker 5: twenty twenty five and be able to change that to
- 3:18Speaker 5: solve it. He obviously thought something much more dramatic needed
- 3:21Speaker 5: to be done, and so he did it yesterday.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 6: Look, people who know me know I'm not as much
- 3:27Speaker 6: blame blame blame coach as most people who are in
- 3:30Speaker 6: the league. But I think Op Pearson is a good coach.
- 3:34Speaker 6: I think he went coached somewhere else. You know, he's
- 3:36Speaker 6: won a Super Bowl, so he can do this. But
- 3:39Speaker 6: at some point, when you're four and thirteen, what I
- 3:43Speaker 6: wondered moving forward was so much of being head coaches
- 3:48Speaker 6: about belief. Do the players believe in this anymore? I
- 3:52Speaker 6: think after one and five last year, at the end
- 3:55Speaker 6: four and thirteen this year, hard to believe in that.
- 3:58Speaker 6: I also think it was going to be hard to
- 3:59Speaker 6: make a defensive coordinator change after one year, and I
- 4:05Speaker 6: don't think he was going to change Press Taylor.
- 4:07Speaker 4: So if you hadn't.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Changed Doug, I don't know what changes. Good coach.
- 4:13Speaker 6: I think deserves be remembered fondly by the Jaguars for
- 4:17Speaker 6: what happened. At some point, a change has been made,
- 4:21Speaker 6: and you can't change all the players.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Cannot change all the players. We did expect though our
- 4:25Speaker 2: second big thing, which is one stage. Some of the
- 4:27Speaker 2: fans outside of the organization talks about jam Trump Bulk
- 4:30Speaker 2: he maybe being let go as well. He was asked
- 4:32Speaker 2: whether he was surprised and still wasn't a part of
- 4:35Speaker 2: that layoff.
- 4:36Speaker 7: I don't know if surprised is the right word. You know,
- 4:39Speaker 7: that's ultimately that's not my decision. That's the decision of ownership,
- 4:43Speaker 7: and I certainly respect the decision that's been made and
- 4:46Speaker 7: don't take the job lately. You know, the real fact,
- 4:51Speaker 7: The bottom line is we weren't productive on the field.
- 4:53Speaker 7: We didn't win enough games, and I don't shy away
- 4:56Speaker 7: from that. I'm just as responsible as anybody else. And
- 5:00Speaker 7: you know, all we can do now is roll up
- 5:02Speaker 7: our sleeves and go to.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Work John a lot to talk about clearing house. They
- 5:06Speaker 2: choose not to do that, want to build the TRENALKI
- 5:09Speaker 2: still what he's been able to do here? Were you
- 5:11Speaker 2: surprised by it?
- 5:12Speaker 6: Well, surprise when you ask somebody who's been around this
- 5:15Speaker 6: league for thirty years, and Brian's probably lafe when I
- 5:17Speaker 6: say this too, You're no longer that's surprised with anything,
- 5:21Speaker 6: because what you know is when an owner is deciding something,
- 5:25Speaker 6: it's one person making a decision. Shod Con is not
- 5:28Speaker 6: one to share thoughts on this. There's not a whole
- 5:32Speaker 6: lot of buzz in a building with shot on these things.
- 5:34Speaker 6: So was I surprised, not shocked. I didn't know what
- 5:39Speaker 6: was going to happen going in. It would not have
- 5:41Speaker 6: surprised me if it had been total change. But Shod
- 5:44Speaker 6: explained a lot of his reasoning. He sees Trent in
- 5:47Speaker 6: the GM as a structural position overseeing football administration.
- 5:53Speaker 3: He likes what they've done with that. So, Brian, I
- 5:56Speaker 3: don't know how to define surprise.
- 5:58Speaker 6: I didn't know what to expect, but I wasn't shocked,
- 6:01Speaker 6: And I guess that kind of avoids the question, but
- 6:04Speaker 6: it's the only answer I.
- 6:05Speaker 5: Have you know, there were four possible outcomes here, Kai
- 6:08Speaker 5: both stay, both go, Doug stays, Trent goes, Trent stays,
- 6:13Speaker 5: Doug goes, and so was I surprised. Yeah, I didn't
- 6:17Speaker 5: know that that was the likely outcome in that. But
- 6:21Speaker 5: I want to take it from a different angle. And
- 6:23Speaker 5: here's what I'm surprised at. John and the owner kind
- 6:25Speaker 5: of laid this out, which you know, Sean talked about,
- 6:28Speaker 5: you know, what he saw in Trent, And I guess
- 6:31Speaker 5: I'm surprised at the level of venom that Trent Bulky gets.
- 6:37Speaker 5: I know, people try to stick him with the urban
- 6:40Speaker 5: Meyer disaster and they wanted to clean at that point,
- 6:42Speaker 5: but he didn't hire urban Meyer.
- 6:44Speaker 4: That was the owner that did that.
- 6:46Speaker 5: And then I look and I see and by the way,
- 6:49Speaker 5: I totally get four and thirteen and you want everything
- 6:52Speaker 5: clean five and eighteen. And I told I mean, that's
- 6:56Speaker 5: don't disappoint it to me.
- 6:56Speaker 4: I realize right now I'm spinning into the wind.
- 7:00Speaker 5: But you talk about a franchise, it was just more
- 7:01Speaker 5: abund It was awful, and he lifted it up with
- 7:05Speaker 5: some of his moves, right. I mean, you look at
- 7:08Speaker 5: the draft choices and you've got four guys from the
- 7:10Speaker 5: twenty twenty one draft class. Here you had nine different
- 7:15Speaker 5: guys from the twenty twenty three class start more than
- 7:18Speaker 5: two games this season for the Jaguars. He's done a
- 7:22Speaker 5: pretty good job with the draft. And he moved backwards twice,
- 7:25Speaker 5: giving you extra third and fourth round picks this year,
- 7:29Speaker 5: and still got Brian Thomas Junior. You want to talk
- 7:31Speaker 5: about free agency, I get at Eric Armstead, Ronald Darby,
- 7:35Speaker 5: Darnell Savage, waste the money that gave you nothing this year.
- 7:38Speaker 5: But he also gave you Rayshawn Jenkins, who gave you
- 7:41Speaker 5: in twenty twenty two the two plays that got you
- 7:43Speaker 5: to the Super Bowl, the pick six against the Cowboys
- 7:45Speaker 5: and the sack strip against the Titans that Josh Allen
- 7:48Speaker 5: returned for the touchdown. Right, And he gave you Evan Ingram,
- 7:51Speaker 5: who gave you one hundred and fourteen catches last year.
- 7:53Speaker 5: And Christian Kirk. And you know just one more thing.
- 7:57Speaker 5: When I saw him in twenty twenty two, signed Christian
- 7:59Speaker 5: Kirk and then draft Parker Washington, and signed Foyer Lucon
- 8:03Speaker 5: and draft Ventreil Miller, and signed Brandon Sheriff and draft
- 8:07Speaker 5: Cooper Hodges.
- 8:07Speaker 4: I saw a guy who knew what he was doing.
- 8:09Speaker 5: He was backfilling the free agents, because you don't want
- 8:12Speaker 5: to build with free agents with young players who are
- 8:15Speaker 5: making plays for.
- 8:16Speaker 4: This football team.
- 8:17Speaker 5: So in saying all of that, I just don't understand
- 8:20Speaker 5: the level of vitriol that you see with Trent. That's
- 8:25Speaker 5: the part that surprises me. And just one last thing
- 8:28Speaker 5: on this, if they get Ben Johnson and the owner,
- 8:31Speaker 5: clearly john believes that what he has to offer here
- 8:34Speaker 5: with a quarterback, with the salary cap, with draft choices,
- 8:36Speaker 5: with facilities, with warm weather no stated he firmly believes.
- 8:40Speaker 4: He can get the guy that he wants.
- 8:41Speaker 5: He said that yesterday and I'm told by other people
- 8:43Speaker 5: he believes that if they go sign Ben Johnson. Do
- 8:46Speaker 5: you really care who the general manager is? I'm not
- 8:48Speaker 5: sure people do. I think that solves that problem. So
- 8:52Speaker 5: the thing that surprises me consistently is just how much
- 8:56Speaker 5: people just don't like him.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Emotions of definite running high. I think after a tough year,
- 9:01Speaker 2: everyone's feeling a lot of things, and this is how
- 9:04Speaker 2: it's coming out right now. We're going to continue to
- 9:05Speaker 2: talk it out. A couple of hot takes coming out
- 9:07Speaker 2: of that availability we had yesterday, so we'll talk some
- 9:10Speaker 2: more after the break. Presented by Forever Vet's Animal Hospital.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Your pet will receive exclusive merchandise, events and sweepstakes access.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Visit Daguars dot com Slash Promotions Slash four Legged Fan
- 9:28Speaker 2: Club to sign up today. Also, our hot takes today
- 9:31Speaker 2: are brought to you by Firehouse SUPs.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Now, you know we are the most predictable team on
- 9:39Speaker 1: both sides of the ball, okay and football, you know,
- 9:44Speaker 1: to win deception is a big part of it. Unpredictability.
- 9:48Speaker 1: If you know exactly what we're going to do on
- 9:50Speaker 1: offense or defense, you know you better have D twenty
- 9:54Speaker 1: two best players you know to help us win a
- 9:58Speaker 1: football game. So being unpredictable is I think it's modern football,
- 10:04Speaker 1: and you know we have to be able to show
- 10:07Speaker 1: that on the field.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Welcome back into jag Exam on Monday. We do hot
- 10:12Speaker 2: takes and normally we give you one of our hot takes,
- 10:14Speaker 2: but I think there was a couple of hot takes
- 10:16Speaker 2: in that availability yesterday with Shadkan and Trent Balky, so
- 10:18Speaker 2: we're going to take our hot takes from there. And
- 10:20Speaker 2: right off the top, shod Con saying this team is
- 10:23Speaker 2: too predictable. The Jaguars need to be unpredictable, Is that true?
- 10:26Speaker 2: Or do they just need some better players?
- 10:28Speaker 5: Well, well, I mean the great example of this is
- 10:31Speaker 5: the Packers for years and years. I mean Bart Starr
- 10:35Speaker 5: used to it, We're gonna run it right here, right,
- 10:36Speaker 5: I mean it's you couldn't stop them. They were so
- 10:38Speaker 5: much better. So, yes, you need better players. But John,
- 10:41Speaker 5: I think what they need to do is do the
- 10:43Speaker 5: predictable things better. I mean, you look at the Lions
- 10:46Speaker 5: and all of the the and I bring them up
- 10:48Speaker 5: obviously because of the Ben Johnson interest. You know, all
- 10:51Speaker 5: of the things that they do, the hook and ladder
- 10:53Speaker 5: in the middle of the game, the throws to the
- 10:54Speaker 5: tackles who become eligible. Well, it's because they do the
- 10:57Speaker 5: little things well, right, I mean they can run the ball,
- 11:00Speaker 5: they can execute on third down. For the Dagwars to
- 11:03Speaker 5: become unpredictable means that they've got to play better with
- 11:05Speaker 5: the things that everyone can tell they're going to do.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's a little bit of a chicken
- 11:10Speaker 6: in the egg thing, which came first. I think to
- 11:13Speaker 6: get unpredictable, I think you need to get better And I.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Think It's what Brian's saying as well.
- 11:19Speaker 6: It's very hard to be to have super creativity when
- 11:26Speaker 6: you're facing second and twelve. It's really easy to be
- 11:29Speaker 6: creative on second and three, which means if you run
- 11:32Speaker 6: well or a fishing in your basics early in downs,
- 11:36Speaker 6: you get more plays.
- 11:37Speaker 3: You can be unpredictable.
- 11:39Speaker 6: So I think what Shod saw and the fans saw
- 11:43Speaker 6: is real. I don't think it was very unpredictable, but
- 11:45Speaker 6: I do think you have to get better overall to
- 11:49Speaker 6: get unpredictable.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Put yourself in a situation where you can be a
- 11:51Speaker 2: little more creative.
- 11:52Speaker 6: I think, yeah, sort of the same thing on defense, right,
- 11:55Speaker 6: I mean, okay, blitzmore and I don't know exactly what
- 11:57Speaker 6: Shod meant in terms of predictability on deff, so I'm
- 12:00Speaker 6: not putting words in his mouth, but you would say,
- 12:03Speaker 6: blitz more, do more exotic things. If you can't stop
- 12:08Speaker 6: the run, which they couldn't, it doesn't matter how exotic
- 12:12Speaker 6: you are.
- 12:12Speaker 3: You're getting rolled well.
- 12:13Speaker 5: And you look at Josh Allen, who Josh heinz Al
- 12:16Speaker 5: who got you the Mega contract before the season.
- 12:20Speaker 4: He had lots of pressures.
- 12:21Speaker 5: I mean he was always around the quarterback, but he
- 12:23Speaker 5: didn't get as many as he did the year before
- 12:26Speaker 5: because the Jaguars were always playing from behind and teams
- 12:28Speaker 5: were running the ball because they could and because they
- 12:30Speaker 5: wanted to run out the clock when you're up by
- 12:32Speaker 5: a couple of scores. So I mean it goes back
- 12:34Speaker 5: to complimentary football, right. I mean you've got to be
- 12:37Speaker 5: a team that you can be dependable before you can
- 12:41Speaker 5: be unpredictable.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Yes, I agree with that.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Let's move to our second hot take from that inter availability,
- 12:47Speaker 2: I should say Trent Bulk says they're going to go
- 12:50Speaker 2: into this head coaching process, interview process right away and
- 12:52Speaker 2: get things going. But he also thinks this can be
- 12:54Speaker 2: a quick turnaround.
- 12:55Speaker 7: I think when you look at where we were in
- 12:57Speaker 7: twenty two leading into the twenty two season, and going
- 13:01Speaker 7: from where we were in twenty one to twenty two,
- 13:04Speaker 7: I don't think there's any reason why we can't repeat that,
- 13:07Speaker 7: you know. I think there's there's a lot of there's
- 13:09Speaker 7: a lot of good young players on this team. There's
- 13:14Speaker 7: a lot to look forward to, you know, and and
- 13:16Speaker 7: the fan base deserves it. They deserve a winner, and
- 13:20Speaker 7: that's what you set out to do every day. You
- 13:22Speaker 7: wake up, come into the building, and you know, we've
- 13:24Speaker 7: got a great group of people in this building that
- 13:28Speaker 7: have that mindset, you know. So I do think this
- 13:31Speaker 7: thing can be flipped and flipped quick and looking forward
- 13:35Speaker 7: to to getting to work on it.
- 13:39Speaker 2: John obviously, Sean conn thinks there's a lot of good things,
- 13:41Speaker 2: good pieces in the building making the playoffs two years ago.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Trent Falke thinks this can be a quick flip. We've
- 13:45Speaker 2: seen it elsewhere. Can that be done here?
- 13:47Speaker 6: Yeah, it can be a quick flip, meaning I firmly
- 13:52Speaker 6: believe that you can go from three to fourteen, especially
- 13:55Speaker 6: with the close.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Games, to back to competitive.
- 13:57Speaker 6: I think you can get back to competitive in an
- 13:59Speaker 6: AFC set that's not great. What I've said multiple times
- 14:02Speaker 6: on this show, what I hope that they don't do
- 14:06Speaker 6: is let's quick flip to get to nine and eight.
- 14:11Speaker 6: That is doable. Getting what we all want is get
- 14:17Speaker 6: to Detroit, Buffalo, Eagles, Kansas City, Right. I don't know
- 14:22Speaker 6: if that's that quick, but I think you can make
- 14:24Speaker 6: that first step. What you hope is that getting to
- 14:27Speaker 6: that first step, and I'm probably not saying this very well,
- 14:30Speaker 6: get to that first step, but don't do it just
- 14:33Speaker 6: to get there, make sure it's long term, make sure
- 14:38Speaker 6: they are foundation things that you can move beyond that
- 14:41Speaker 6: as well, because I think in twenty two they got there,
- 14:43Speaker 6: couldn't quite get further.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Well, two things stand out.
- 14:47Speaker 5: One, the quarterback has to emerge from two injury plagued seasons.
- 14:51Speaker 5: I mean the last game he played this year was
- 14:53Speaker 5: November third, right, I mean last game he started and
- 14:56Speaker 5: played it.
- 14:57Speaker 4: I take that back.
- 14:57Speaker 5: He played in the Texans game, but you know, briefly
- 15:00Speaker 5: before he was injured, so you know you didn't have
- 15:03Speaker 5: him the last too much of the season effectively, and
- 15:05Speaker 5: you didn't have him healthy the last month and a
- 15:07Speaker 5: half of the season last year. So if he emerges
- 15:10Speaker 5: and who they hire will have something to do with this,
- 15:13Speaker 5: and becomes the quarterback that we all think he can become,
- 15:16Speaker 5: then that goes a long way towards solving a lot
- 15:19Speaker 5: of your problems. And then the other is on the
- 15:21Speaker 5: man who just talked, and that's Trent. He's got to
- 15:23Speaker 5: go and draft another BTJ. Right, and at number five,
- 15:27Speaker 5: you'd like to think that that would be something that
- 15:29Speaker 5: he could do. There's seven or eight we're told guys
- 15:31Speaker 5: with first round grades. You're right, there, go draft another
- 15:35Speaker 5: player who will come in as a rookie and make
- 15:37Speaker 5: a big impact, likely to be on the defensive side
- 15:39Speaker 5: of the ball, because that's where it's heavy up there.
- 15:41Speaker 5: Go do it again. That's where it's on him. And
- 15:44Speaker 5: to get back to you know, twenty twenty two in
- 15:47Speaker 5: free agency, because you know they're going to spend some
- 15:49Speaker 5: money in free agency and don't swing at older guys
- 15:53Speaker 5: who are you know, on the tail end of their career,
- 15:55Speaker 5: like Eric Armstead, like Ronald Darby. You've got to be
- 15:59Speaker 5: impactful with Christian Kirk and having Ingram and for ye Lukon.
- 16:03Speaker 6: Yeah, I think Brian's first thing as we get further
- 16:05Speaker 6: away from the week to week, you know, micro focused
- 16:10Speaker 6: on the details.
- 16:11Speaker 4: It's all the quarterback.
- 16:12Speaker 6: The Trevor's got to be more special and more elite
- 16:18Speaker 6: than he has been. He showed it for about three
- 16:20Speaker 6: or four games in the middle of twenty three where
- 16:22Speaker 6: that he was getting there, and then the injuries game.
- 16:24Speaker 6: It's been sort of off since.
- 16:28Speaker 3: It's got to get back on. Absolutely.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Our third hot take today is gonna come from the
- 16:33Speaker 2: locker room when we talked to some of the players
- 16:34Speaker 2: and they were cleaning things out Yesterday, Eric Armstead talked
- 16:37Speaker 2: a little bit about how he was playing at edge
- 16:39Speaker 2: this year, but he wants to go back to his
- 16:41Speaker 2: original position.
- 16:43Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm gonna move back inside next year. That that's
- 16:47Speaker 8: gonna be my plan. You know, that was what I
- 16:52Speaker 8: wanted to do, you know, this season as well too.
- 16:57Speaker 8: But you know, there's there's situations that you have to
- 17:01Speaker 8: deal with, you know, in this league. And yes, I'm
- 17:06Speaker 8: a switch back inside, which was what I wanted to
- 17:09Speaker 8: do this season, and I'm a deep back playing to
- 17:16Speaker 8: you know, elite player that I know I can be.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Arms is saying saying he wants to go back inside
- 17:23Speaker 2: on the defensive line. He's playing edge a good chunk
- 17:25Speaker 2: of this year, not really a starter what he's used
- 17:28Speaker 2: to doing, saying he wants to go back and he's
- 17:30Speaker 2: gonna do that next year. So I'll take Airic crimsaid
- 17:32Speaker 2: will be the starting defensive tackle in twenty twenty five.
- 17:35Speaker 5: Yeah, he's laying it at the feet of the defensive staff.
- 17:38Speaker 5: I guess, you know, this was a mistake on my part.
- 17:41Speaker 5: This was one of the guys John that I thought, Okay, listen,
- 17:44Speaker 5: he's coming in. He's he's gonna give you something inside,
- 17:48Speaker 5: because that's what he had always been in San Francisco.
- 17:51Speaker 4: He'd been a Pro Bowl caliber player. He has the height, he.
- 17:53Speaker 5: Has the length, he has the leverage, and he gave
- 17:57Speaker 5: you a sack an opening day.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Thought okay, and then he.
- 17:59Speaker 5: Started playing, So I just listen, we don't have a
- 18:04Speaker 5: ton of Yeah, there wasn't a whole lot. He didn't
- 18:09Speaker 5: give you a whole lot when he did go inside
- 18:10Speaker 5: to the middle. Either this is that this is the
- 18:12Speaker 5: storyline to fallow.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm flummixed and.
- 18:18Speaker 6: I don't know what to say this because I've been
- 18:20Speaker 6: asked so many times what was going on with this?
- 18:22Speaker 3: I guess maybe the best.
- 18:24Speaker 6: Thing to do with the Eric Armstead story is he's
- 18:27Speaker 6: going to be here next year.
- 18:29Speaker 3: Evidently he's playing tackle.
- 18:30Speaker 6: I think the new coordinators will be thrilled to learn
- 18:34Speaker 6: that when they get the job. So maybe it's just
- 18:39Speaker 6: time to say, Okay, Eric Armstead, whatever story was this year,
- 18:45Speaker 6: let's see what it is next year, because he has talent,
- 18:47Speaker 6: and it just seemed like one of those everyone's on
- 18:50Speaker 6: free agency, you get one of those where you're like,
- 18:52Speaker 6: what's going on? And this was that he lumbered off
- 18:56Speaker 6: the edge. So maybe this is the time next year.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Have it through the season.
- 19:01Speaker 4: We'll be riding a success story.
- 19:03Speaker 5: Sure, hope what happens to because now all of a sudden,
- 19:06Speaker 5: you seem to have a glood of tackles. Right, You've
- 19:08Speaker 5: got Devon Hamilton, who's gonna be here because he's got
- 19:10Speaker 5: twenty million dollars in dead money on the cap for you.
- 19:12Speaker 5: You drafted Mason Smith and he shows you something at
- 19:15Speaker 5: the end of the year, and you have Jordan Jefferson.
- 19:17Speaker 5: What I hope doesn't happen is you pass on Mason
- 19:19Speaker 5: Graham if he's the best player at number five, because
- 19:22Speaker 5: you say, well, we've got Eric Armstead to play in there. No,
- 19:25Speaker 5: don't pass on a great young player at a position
- 19:27Speaker 5: of need. I still think because Devon is getting a
- 19:30Speaker 5: little long in the tooth and Eric is that you
- 19:32Speaker 5: need defensive tackle. I hope Eric Armstead's presence in the
- 19:36Speaker 5: middle doesn't prevent them from taking the best player available
- 19:40Speaker 5: on the board if that happens to be the defensive
- 19:42Speaker 5: tackle from Michigan.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a legitimate concern.
- 19:45Speaker 6: I would guess that it wouldn't because you can rotate there,
- 19:49Speaker 6: and because Trent does believe in big guys, but your point.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Is about stay with us.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Where you are going to hear a little bit more
- 19:59Speaker 2: from the players is out their lockers yesterday and talked
- 20:01Speaker 2: a little bit about Doug peterson sireing the move the
- 20:08Speaker 2: Fray Magellan Transport but the coolest office space in Jacksonville.
- 20:11Speaker 2: You can apply online at Magellanlogistics dot com.
- 20:16Speaker 9: Obviously, it's unfortunate because at the end of the day,
- 20:20Speaker 9: we all had a hand in, you know, this season
- 20:23Speaker 9: and just how the way things have shaken out. I
- 20:26Speaker 9: have a ton of respect for Doug. He's maybe a
- 20:29Speaker 9: better football player, a better man, and you know, I
- 20:32Speaker 9: think he's one of the better coaches to have coached
- 20:35Speaker 9: in this league. And it's just unfortunate the way that
- 20:38Speaker 9: things went. But obviously the organization has to make a
- 20:41Speaker 9: decision that they feel his best going forward.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Well, I've received a Christian Kirk in here yesterday kind
- 20:50Speaker 2: of giving his thoughts on the firing of head coach
- 20:51Speaker 2: Doug Peterson. Obviously the unfortunate situation, and talked a lot
- 20:55Speaker 2: about how much he's helped him as a player. But
- 20:57Speaker 2: I think one of the things and good to hear
- 20:59Speaker 2: from christ and the players is taking that accountability right
- 21:02Speaker 2: off the top of we all didn't do what we
- 21:04Speaker 2: needed to this year, and unfortunately this is what happens.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Some person has to take the fall. John, But uh,
- 21:09Speaker 2: I think there's an understanding that they all need to
- 21:11Speaker 2: be better.
- 21:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:12Speaker 6: I thought it was interesting and as you as you
- 21:15Speaker 6: go on and you learn more about different players and
- 21:17Speaker 6: how the league sort of works. Evan Ingram and Christian Kirk,
- 21:21Speaker 6: who might be the most aware league savvy guys in
- 21:27Speaker 6: that locker room, meaning hey we've seen this, both said Hey,
- 21:30Speaker 6: you know, I I'm paraphrasing fire, Doug, fire, if you want,
- 21:35Speaker 6: we gotta be better. And so they know the coaches
- 21:38Speaker 6: get fired. They also know from being around that locker
- 21:41Speaker 6: room that there were plays that didn't get made.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Uh.
- 21:43Speaker 6: Trayvon Walker mentioned it that there was a lull when
- 21:47Speaker 6: they were losing where he wasn't sure that everybody was
- 21:50Speaker 6: brought in w was going right? And you know, Trayvon,
- 21:55Speaker 6: it's a different level, but he's been around Georgia's success
- 21:58Speaker 6: national championships.
- 21:59Speaker 4: He sort of knew wasn't right. Now.
- 22:01Speaker 6: Part of that's the coach bringing that right, But a
- 22:05Speaker 6: little bit is the guy is saying, hey, this is
- 22:08Speaker 6: our team. It's a players league. Those guys matter who's
- 22:11Speaker 6: leading have to do a better job of that next year.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Collectively. I mean, I'm not talking about those three, but collectively,
- 22:17Speaker 3: it's gotta be uh more of a wanted Oh.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Let's hear from Trayvon as well. We have him talking yesterday.
- 22:23Speaker 10: Definitely something that me personally, I don't wanna hear the
- 22:26Speaker 10: I think he's a great coach. Uh he He's done
- 22:29Speaker 10: some great things of this organization on Uh, he's a
- 22:31Speaker 10: great guy, great coach. Like I said, I wouldn't wish
- 22:34Speaker 10: that on anyone. But no, it's life. We all based
- 22:38Speaker 10: with obstacles in life and we just gotta keep going.
- 22:41Speaker 2: So obviously, you know, Doug had a ton of respect
- 22:43Speaker 2: in that locker room, and I don't think anyone's saying
- 22:45Speaker 2: he's a bad football coach. It it's unfortunate the way
- 22:47Speaker 2: things worked out, the way things panned out here, and
- 22:51Speaker 2: I wonder what they'll kind of go. We'll talk tomorrow
- 22:54Speaker 2: more about what that coaching search is gonna look like,
- 22:56Speaker 2: but I wonder what kind of personality they'll look to
- 22:58Speaker 2: bring in or what kind of style.
- 23:00Speaker 5: Well, it was interesting, you know a lot of the
- 23:02Speaker 5: veteran players were asked what do you want? And none
- 23:05Speaker 5: of them knew what to answer, in part out of
- 23:08Speaker 5: respect for Doug, because the question itself says, hey, what
- 23:12Speaker 5: do you want that you weren't getting here right. But
- 23:15Speaker 5: the other side of it was they had such respect
- 23:16Speaker 5: for Doug. Doug played the game, had been in the
- 23:19Speaker 5: league for thirty years, and I don't know that it
- 23:21Speaker 5: was anything that they saw in Doug that they think
- 23:24Speaker 5: they needed to have. I thought the respect was well
- 23:28Speaker 5: founded for him in that sense. It goes back to accountability,
- 23:32Speaker 5: and these guys know that if this team is going
- 23:35Speaker 5: to go anywhere, it's going to be on them.
- 23:37Speaker 4: They're all going to have to do more.
- 23:40Speaker 5: And John, that seems so easy to say, you go
- 23:44Speaker 5: to do more on the field, but it isn't just
- 23:45Speaker 5: doing more on the field. It's doing more off the
- 23:47Speaker 5: field away from the building off season. It's about taking
- 23:51Speaker 5: ownership of your career and your impact in this locker
- 23:56Speaker 5: room and projecting it and getting away from FOOTBA a
- 24:00Speaker 5: little bit, but not too far so that you understand
- 24:02Speaker 5: that your preparation and what you bring to the table
- 24:06Speaker 5: when you leave this building every night during the season
- 24:08Speaker 5: or when you're around here in the off season, it's
- 24:11Speaker 5: on you. You've got to be your best otherwise you don't
- 24:13Speaker 5: last in this league.
- 24:13Speaker 6: It's needing to win and having it be something that
- 24:17Speaker 6: you can't live without. And I'm not sure that you
- 24:20Speaker 6: have enough of that.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Whoever the head coach is my first move a Trevor.
- 24:30Speaker 6: I have a leadership council, whatever, treymon Walker and everybody
- 24:34Speaker 6: doesn't shut the door because you need him. He progressed
- 24:39Speaker 6: in this direction this year, in year four, next year.
- 24:44Speaker 6: Outside of Trevor Lawrence, this needs to be treymon Walker's
- 24:46Speaker 6: team because he's a guy that you look to in
- 24:49Speaker 6: terms of approach, in terms of desire, that you can
- 24:52Speaker 6: build around his persona.
- 24:55Speaker 5: Well and listen, as a player on the field, We've
- 24:57Speaker 5: been talking about how good he is in so many situations.
- 25:01Speaker 5: But look, they don't make it overtime if he doesn't
- 25:03Speaker 5: get that sack in all likelihood, right, it's third and
- 25:05Speaker 5: three at the fifty yard line, Joe Flacco's carving you up,
- 25:08Speaker 5: and he comes around the corner and makes the sack
- 25:10Speaker 5: that forced them to punt in the Jags get to
- 25:13Speaker 5: overtime and have a chance. He's that good of a player,
- 25:16Speaker 5: and I'm not sure that people so widely recognize just
- 25:19Speaker 5: how good he is. But he's good on the field,
- 25:21Speaker 5: he's good off the field, in the community, in the
- 25:24Speaker 5: locker room.
- 25:24Speaker 4: He's a terrific football player.
- 25:26Speaker 3: You're so right, well, Betj's best player on the team.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Trayvine is close to yeah.
- 25:30Speaker 2: I think the interesting thing about I will say both
- 25:32Speaker 2: of them. Brian not quite there yet, but Trayvon makes
- 25:35Speaker 2: people around him better too, which I think we don't
- 25:37Speaker 2: give him a ton of credit for. But he covers
- 25:39Speaker 2: up a lot of things I think sometimes and obviously
- 25:42Speaker 2: what he's been able to do to help Josh and
- 25:44Speaker 2: if they ever get a rush from the middle, they'll
- 25:46Speaker 2: have something really going there. But his having players that
- 25:49Speaker 2: can make other people better is something you absolutely need.
- 25:52Speaker 2: And obviously we need to see that more from Trevor
- 25:54Speaker 2: as well, but to have some others that can do
- 25:56Speaker 2: it is huge. So say with us, we'll talk a
- 25:58Speaker 2: little bit more about what's coming up this week, and
- 26:00Speaker 2: we'll talk a little bit more about this coaching search.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Jags fans, if you want customer jag Warts furniture for
- 26:10Speaker 2: your home, check us if you're dot com debouts all
- 26:12Speaker 2: the customizable options if you're is furniture for fans, you know,
- 26:16Speaker 2: I mean.
- 26:16Speaker 1: I talked to the players regularly, Okay, so and I
- 26:21Speaker 1: don't want to identify Trevor or anyone else by name,
- 26:24Speaker 1: but uh, you know, listen to you know what's going
- 26:28Speaker 1: to make them successful. But this isn't, you know, let's
- 26:33Speaker 1: be clear, a second coming of Aaron Rodgers two point oh. Okay,
- 26:38Speaker 1: so it's it's I mean, you know, we're going to
- 26:43Speaker 1: do the right thing for the team, and obviously our
- 26:48Speaker 1: goal is if Trevor doesn't get better, the other players
- 26:51Speaker 1: don't get better, we're not gonna win. So the coaches
- 26:54Speaker 1: coming in know who our foundational players are and they
- 26:57Speaker 1: have to be committed to, you know, making them better.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Owner Shad Cohn was asked about whether he would be
- 27:05Speaker 2: consulting Trevor Lawrence when he was making the selection for
- 27:08Speaker 2: the new head coach, and he said he does talk
- 27:10Speaker 2: to the players, he consults with them, but it's not
- 27:12Speaker 2: gonna be an Aaron Rodgers situation in New York, which
- 27:14Speaker 2: a nice little dig for no reason, but I appreciated
- 27:16Speaker 2: it anyway, And so I think more the question would be,
- 27:20Speaker 2: is you need someone that comes in and believes they
- 27:23Speaker 2: can work with Trevor and get him to that point
- 27:25Speaker 2: that we need him to be at, right, because at
- 27:28Speaker 2: this point, you don't want to be wasting this section
- 27:31Speaker 2: of his career where, if he can stay healthy, should
- 27:33Speaker 2: be entering a prime time of his career and they
- 27:36Speaker 2: need to come in be able to get him that level,
- 27:37Speaker 2: and whatever their planner method might be will be a
- 27:40Speaker 2: big part of this process.
- 27:41Speaker 5: I'm sure that's the reason that everybody is so hot
- 27:44Speaker 5: on Ben Johnson because what he's been able to do
- 27:46Speaker 5: with Jared Goff. And yeah, I mean that's why I
- 27:49Speaker 5: would be so interested in that as well. But if
- 27:52Speaker 5: Ben Johnson doesn't end up here, that doesn't mean they
- 27:54Speaker 5: won't find somebody that can come and do it as well. Remember,
- 27:57Speaker 5: I mean Dan Campbell hired Benjasen, and I would say
- 28:01Speaker 5: most people don't know or didn't know who Ben Johnson was.
- 28:04Speaker 5: That would be the question that I have for every
- 28:06Speaker 5: single candidate. Tell me who's going to get my quarterback
- 28:10Speaker 5: to that point? The offensive coordinator, quarterback coach is the
- 28:14Speaker 5: most important person that my new head coach is going
- 28:17Speaker 5: to bring in.
- 28:18Speaker 6: Yeah, if Sean gets a feeling of any candidate that
- 28:23Speaker 6: he's not one hundred percent all in in his heart
- 28:25Speaker 6: and soul on Trevor Lawrence, move on, because that's got
- 28:29Speaker 6: to work.
- 28:29Speaker 3: And if and I think.
- 28:32Speaker 6: They'll get somebody who's who they really really want. If
- 28:37Speaker 6: it's a Ben Johnson, if it's another offensive, you can
- 28:40Speaker 6: guarantee they wouldn't even be taking the interview if from
- 28:44Speaker 6: afar they didn't believe this kid could do it. So
- 28:49Speaker 6: stay tuned.
- 28:49Speaker 5: Do you think, just as a question, do you think
- 28:52Speaker 5: that this job is the most attractive.
- 28:56Speaker 4: Job out there right now? Because that's listen, that's.
- 28:59Speaker 5: The narrative with people who believe that Trent Balkey is
- 29:02Speaker 5: slowing it down, that he'll keep them from being there.
- 29:04Speaker 5: The owner is obviously betting that that he can make
- 29:07Speaker 5: this the most attractive job.
- 29:09Speaker 4: Where do you place it? Do you think it's you know,
- 29:11Speaker 4: top one or two?
- 29:11Speaker 6: I don't cover the other team, so I don't know
- 29:14Speaker 6: the details. I do know, you know, it's the old cliche.
- 29:17Speaker 6: You're in Florida, you have an owner who is not
- 29:22Speaker 6: a quick trigger owner and who everybody out there shod con.
- 29:28Speaker 3: This shod con that.
- 29:30Speaker 6: Coaches measure owners by patients by staying out of the
- 29:35Speaker 6: way and.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Do they support well.
- 29:40Speaker 6: Nobody in the league is going to tell anybody that
- 29:42Speaker 6: shod Con doesn't support in terms of money, in terms
- 29:45Speaker 6: of and so whether it's the best job in the
- 29:50Speaker 6: league or not depends on how people feel about Traver
- 29:54Speaker 6: good point.
- 29:55Speaker 2: So we'll be with you guys one more day this week.
- 29:57Speaker 2: We'll talk a little bit about some of those coaching
- 30:00Speaker 2: interviews that are gonna be taking place and some possible
- 30:02Speaker 2: candidates here, and also just a little bit of a
- 30:05Speaker 2: preview about free agency and what the off season is
- 30:07Speaker 2: going to look like for the team. That's a great
- 30:10Speaker 2: things
