Latest / 52 Cues - A Production Music and Sync Podcast / Arabian Orchestral Cue Review
Transcript
- 0:33Speaker 1: What is happening everybody, this is Dave Croft, and welcome back to another Q review where I feature a Q written by a member of the 52Q's community and provide thoughts, feedback and critique, like you might hear from a music supervisor or a potential library.
- 0:48Speaker 1: We are checking out Desert Duel, which is an Arabian orchestral Q written by 52Q's community member, mark Morgan Shaw, so we are going to take a listen to this and then talk about it on the other side.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Alright, so that was Desert Duel.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Thank you so much for sitting this along, mark.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Like I said, this was sent up into our weekly feedback threads that we put together every single week over at 52Q's, and if you would like your Q reviewed, then head over to 52Q'scom and add yours.
- 3:40Speaker 1: So now Mark is an accomplished library and production music composer.
- 3:45Speaker 1: He's got placements, he's in libraries, so this is somewhat of a victory lap.
- 3:50Speaker 1: He said I've been working on an Arabian orchestral track for a library brief and this is version 3.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Thanks to some feedback from some other folks in the community, I thought this was really really nicely done.
- 4:04Speaker 1: The choir, I thought, was really well done.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I could have used even a little bit more reverb on the vocals there and probably maybe a little hair down in the mix.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I thought this is working really well.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Love the energy, love the push, love the edit point as well.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Some of these fast MIDI notes are some of the fast string notes are feeling a little MIDI-E to me and so I would be careful and back those down or just work them.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Another thing is picking a string patch which sounds a little bit more authentic to the style.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And there's a string patch in East-West.
- 5:12Speaker 1: It's called like Middle Eastern Orchestra or something which is this sound of an orchestra in octaves but all playing 2D together.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And so I don't know if you have East West Composer Cloud or whatever, but it would have been kind of cool to use that type of a string texture right here.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And I would make a recommendation for your melodic idea here, your motif, because we have we're doing the same thing every single time If we treat this like kind of a four bar, a larger four bar idea maybe put or some connective tissue, so it's not the exact same thing.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So kind of put a little kind of a comma in the phrase here and then let me fix that then back to the original motif or something else in that phrase at the end.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So it's not the exact same melodic idea every single time.
- 6:54Speaker 1: It feels just a little repetitive.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I do like that idea.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I couldn't tell if that was a doodoo or not.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Doodoo would work really well through here.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I think that percussion, the, you know that kind of doomback sounds and all that stuff could come out a little bit more.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Three, four, one, two.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Now I feel like we could have added a little bit.
- 7:39Speaker 1: A little bit more breathing room here.
- 7:41Speaker 1: It feels like it's just one beat Three, four, one.
- 7:50Speaker 1: What would happen if we extended that?
- 7:55Speaker 1: Let's see.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Let's just see.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I'm going to make this twice as long.
- 8:02Speaker 1: This might sound terrible.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah, just give it a hair or more breathing room.
- 8:15Speaker 1: So, I think we should have some low brass, some Brahms, something kind of bomb Big trombones just all the way, all the way extended with their arms outstretched.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Ah uh, yeah, lips hanging at the end of their bells.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Oh.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Something like that.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Yeah, really really nice.
- 9:24Speaker 1: My preference would be to have a nice clean ending here and hold it for a full, full four beats, or at least two beats Off.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Actually probably three beats, three beats, you know, four, two, three.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I think three beats would work.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Now, all of these are just suggestions.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I don't think anything.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Any of these are deal breakers.
- 9:48Speaker 1: You definitely and obviously know what you're doing here.
- 9:51Speaker 1: These are all just compositional suggestions for you.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And the last thing is is I thought the mix, the mix was, was okay, it's pretty good.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Hard to tell, you know, pulling this off line, this is that dip, that's the 18k dip from the, from the Pulling it off of an MP3 and, as far as the, the levels were clipping into the zeros and so I don't know how much you leave at the top.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I like to leave around minus one.
- 10:26Speaker 1: That way we don't clip the output bus.
- 10:29Speaker 1: But again, this, this could be because I'm pulling it from a midi file here or a MP3 Off.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, three beats for sure.
- 10:41Speaker 1: But man, I thought this was really fantastic.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Desert duel, that's a fantastic title.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Mix itself is really really solid.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I think we're in really good shape.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Like I said, this was sent along during this past weeks Feedback threads.
- 10:56Speaker 1: We put feedback threads together every single week and right now you can get feedback on your own cue.
- 11:01Speaker 1: We are collecting cues for week 44 and I will be choosing one of these cues to feature Next week here on the podcast or on the podcast channel and here on the YouTube channel.
- 11:11Speaker 1: But that's gonna do it for me.
- 11:13Speaker 1: If you want cue feedback on your own cues and don't necessarily, you know, want to post it up on on 52 cues, you can also order your own feedback video.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Just head over to 52 cues comm Slash coaching and order up your own feedback video.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And while you're there, you can also check out my one-on-one coaching services and sign up for the wedding list for our winter 2021 mastermind.
- 11:38Speaker 1: But that's gonna do it for me until next time, peace.
