- 0:41Speaker 1: a quick reminder that you can have the latest edition
- 0:44Speaker 1: of this podcast delivered write to your phone, tablet or
- 0:47Speaker 1: computer by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's the
- 0:51Speaker 1: greatest thing since TV coverage of the NFL Draft. The
- 0:56Speaker 1: first draft ever televised was the Anthony munyoft in nineteen eighty.
- 1:02Speaker 1: A six month old all sports cable network desperate for
- 1:06Speaker 1: programming named ESPN figured that the draft would draw a
- 1:10Speaker 1: few eyeballs. The first round was on a Tuesday afternoon
- 1:14Speaker 1: and there were no fans in attendance. It was basically
- 1:17Speaker 1: a bunch of people sitting around phones. Forty five years later,
- 1:21Speaker 1: it's a three day extravaganza that hundreds of thousands of
- 1:25Speaker 1: people attend in person and millions more watch on TV.
- 1:30Speaker 1: In fact, this year's first round averaged thirteen point six
- 1:34Speaker 1: million viewers, the second most watched first round ever, the
- 1:39Speaker 1: only one that topped it the Joe Burrow Draft in
- 1:43Speaker 1: twenty twenty. Now, let's get to the Bengals Day three selections.
- 1:48Speaker 1: In the fourth round, Cincinnati picked linebacker Barrett Carter out
- 1:52Speaker 1: of Clemson. Carter was a three year starter for the
- 1:55Speaker 1: Tigers and a captain last year. He's a little undersized
- 1:59Speaker 1: in terms of height at six feet, but he's a
- 2:02Speaker 1: solid two hundred and thirty two pounds with excellent speed,
- 2:05Speaker 1: and he rarely came off the field, including special team's duty.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Defensive coordinator Al Golden says that Carter made a great
- 2:13Speaker 1: impression when they met face to face at the NFL combine.
- 2:19Speaker 2: First of all, it wasn't canned, you know, it wasn't practice.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I thought it was really the word that I wrote
- 2:25Speaker 2: down on my notes was authentic, you know, just the
- 2:29Speaker 2: the relationship that he had with his pastor you know,
- 2:34Speaker 2: back home and four point zero GPA team captain. You know,
- 2:40Speaker 2: we have a sign down here in our weight room,
- 2:42Speaker 2: you know, fat pH a T and he's that. So
- 2:45Speaker 2: he's he's a guy that you know, is a culture
- 2:51Speaker 2: creator and he'll improve ours. He's a guy that we
- 2:56Speaker 2: had high regard for, had grades higher than the current round.
- 3:02Speaker 2: UH could play stack linebacker, gives us four down value,
- 3:04Speaker 2: early downs, third down and UH special teams Team Captain
- 3:09Speaker 2: green dot UH four oh g p A just a
- 3:12Speaker 2: family oriented guy.
- 3:14Speaker 3: UH.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Just a really impressive human being.
- 3:16Speaker 1: UH.
- 3:16Speaker 2: And he's gonna have an immediate impact for us. We're
- 3:20Speaker 2: too deep at linebacker now in terms of if we're
- 3:22Speaker 2: playing four to two, UH, we still need some help
- 3:26Speaker 2: in terms of if we're playing bass with you know
- 3:28Speaker 2: four three structure. So I just feel like, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 2: we we have you know, six seven linebackers. I think
- 3:38Speaker 2: we have more ends now. So I think we've fortified
- 3:41Speaker 2: a bunch of positions. And it just gives me a
- 3:44Speaker 2: sense of Okay, now we can UH plot the course
- 3:49Speaker 2: when the crossroads of UH evaluation and opportunity UH meet
- 3:57Speaker 2: UH in terms of need meeting opportunity. You know, theres
- 4:00Speaker 2: a need and the evaluation was high. It's hard to
- 4:02Speaker 2: pass up that prospect.
- 4:05Speaker 1: By the way, Elle made a reference to the letters
- 4:07Speaker 1: P H A T that are on the wall in
- 4:10Speaker 1: the Bengals weight room. They stand for physical, Hungry, accountable teammate.
- 4:17Speaker 1: We spoke to Carter after he was selected and got
- 4:20Speaker 1: his reaction to being chosen by the Bengals in round four.
- 4:24Speaker 4: I was not anticipating it at all. You know, I
- 4:26Speaker 4: was just trying to take in everything, just pick my pick.
- 4:29Speaker 4: And you know, I saw something on the clock, and
- 4:31Speaker 4: you know, I was I was hoping for it, but
- 4:33Speaker 4: you know what I mean, you never know what the
- 4:35Speaker 4: draft and I see my phone light up and I
- 4:37Speaker 4: answer the call, and you know, here we are. So
- 4:40Speaker 4: I'm super, super blessed to be a part of it
- 4:42Speaker 4: and just I'm ready to you know, get get to
- 4:44Speaker 4: work and you know, you know, go win some games.
- 4:46Speaker 4: So I'm super excited.
- 4:48Speaker 5: Fears a profile of you were you removed the defense
- 4:51Speaker 5: as a sophomore and that you quote unquote hated it.
- 4:53Speaker 4: What did you hate about that move? Are you grateful
- 4:55Speaker 4: now that they made that move? Yeah? So that was
- 4:57Speaker 4: my That was the end of my freshman year of
- 4:59Speaker 4: high school, and I just I'd grown up playing receiver
- 5:02Speaker 4: and running back really my whole life, and you know,
- 5:05Speaker 4: they moved me the linebacker, and I was I was
- 5:07Speaker 4: super mad about it. I thought I was I'm from Chicaga,
- 5:09Speaker 4: and I thought I was gonna be the next Devin Hester,
- 5:12Speaker 4: so something like that, and then moved me to defense,
- 5:14Speaker 4: and I was pissed off. I wanted to quit football,
- 5:16Speaker 4: but the next day I got my.
- 5:18Speaker 6: First scholarship offer.
- 5:19Speaker 4: So God wore some mysterious ways and that showed me
- 5:22Speaker 4: that right there. But you know, I've grown to love
- 5:24Speaker 4: defense and I wouldn't want to play any other side
- 5:26Speaker 4: of the ball, and I wouldn't want to play any
- 5:28Speaker 4: other position.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Defensive coordinator Al Golden spoke about your interview in Indianapolis
- 5:33Speaker 1: and he described it as authentic and that you didn't
- 5:36Speaker 1: sound coached. How did you approach those one on one
- 5:39Speaker 1: meetings with NFL teams?
- 5:41Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I walked into my interviews and I
- 5:43Speaker 4: just I just I was just being myself.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You know.
- 5:46Speaker 4: I didn't want to put up a put up a
- 5:47Speaker 4: front and anything or you know, try to be something
- 5:50Speaker 4: that I'm not, you know, God gave me my DNA,
- 5:53Speaker 4: my finger print, and no one else has the same
- 5:54Speaker 4: finger print. And I stand by that and I live
- 5:57Speaker 4: by that. So I walked into every single room just
- 6:00Speaker 4: being myself. I'm a confident, humble, smart young man, and
- 6:05Speaker 4: you know that's that's that's why, that's what I tried
- 6:06Speaker 4: to be in every single interview. So I'm glad. I
- 6:09Speaker 4: guess I left a good impression.
- 6:11Speaker 3: What made you an effective and good team captain?
- 6:15Speaker 4: I would say the number one thing that I lead
- 6:18Speaker 4: with love, and I don't I don't just you know,
- 6:21Speaker 4: attach myself to the starters or the other linebackers or
- 6:25Speaker 4: the other like like other good players, like I don't
- 6:28Speaker 4: care like what your role is or who you are.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I'm gonna treat you like you're the most important player
- 6:34Speaker 4: or whoever you are. So I mean, it didn't matter
- 6:36Speaker 4: if you were a walk on who never touched a
- 6:38Speaker 4: field or if you were the starting quarterback, like I
- 6:41Speaker 4: approach you the same.
- 6:41Speaker 6: I didn't talk to you any differently.
- 6:43Speaker 4: And I think that you know, seeing that authenticity, that genuine,
- 6:47Speaker 4: that genuine love and care, I think that's why you
- 6:49Speaker 4: know my teammates voting your team captain. So I would
- 6:52Speaker 4: say that's the number one thing.
- 6:54Speaker 1: In the fifth round, the Bengals selected offensive lineman Jalen
- 6:57Speaker 1: Rivers out of the University of Miami. He's six' six
- 7:01Speaker 1: roughly three hundred and twenty pounds and helped protect the
- 7:05Speaker 1: number one pick in this year's, draft Cam ward And
- 7:08Speaker 1: rivers is. Versatile this past, season he played three hundred
- 7:12Speaker 1: and sixty four snaps at left tackle and two hundred
- 7:15Speaker 1: nineteen snaps at left, guard often playing both in the same.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Game here's offensive Coordinator Dan. Pitcher really impressive, guy.
- 7:26Speaker 7: Very, smart physically, gifted, versatile has has really played just
- 7:34Speaker 7: about an equal share of his snaps at guard and,
- 7:37Speaker 7: tackle oftentimes within game playing guard and.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Tackle so that.
- 7:41Speaker 7: Versatility really speaks to the VALUE i think he'll provide
- 7:44Speaker 7: us at this. Level adding a super high character, guy great,
- 7:48Speaker 7: length very good pass. Protector had him here in the
- 7:52Speaker 7: building on a visit and couldn't have been more impressed
- 7:55Speaker 7: with him as a. Person we've just added talent to that.
- 7:59Speaker 6: Room we've got.
- 8:00Speaker 7: Better we feel really good about, that and it is
- 8:03Speaker 7: key that as you're adding guys who you expect to
- 8:05Speaker 7: compete potentially serve is depth pieces at least initially that
- 8:11Speaker 7: they have that versatility and So jalen has that and it'll.
- 8:14Speaker 6: Prove valuable for.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Us my third round Pick Dylan fairchild looking like the
- 8:19Speaker 1: front runner to start at left. Guard rivers figures to
- 8:23Speaker 1: primarily be a backup tackle with the ability to play
- 8:27Speaker 1: guard if.
- 8:28Speaker 6: Needed, Oh i'm extremely excited to be a part of this.
- 8:32Speaker 6: Program this PROGRAM i visited and taught to coaches And
- 8:35Speaker 6: i've been watching for a long. Time So i'm excited
- 8:37Speaker 6: to be a part of a building organization and a
- 8:40Speaker 6: team that's going to be, great And i'm just another
- 8:43Speaker 6: addition to. It SO i mean, Quite i'm an ecstatic right.
- 8:45Speaker 6: Now lost For.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Wards did you have several thirty visits and when The
- 8:49Speaker 1: bengals brought you, in did you make or did that
- 8:52Speaker 1: make you think that this was a real?
- 8:53Speaker 6: Possibility the being was my only thirty, visit but DEFINITELY
- 8:59Speaker 6: i did feel OF i didn't feel the sense of
- 9:02Speaker 6: AFTER i leave in, There i'm, LIKE i definitely feel
- 9:05Speaker 6: like this is a great fit for, me AND i
- 9:06Speaker 6: feel like they viewed me the, same and of course
- 9:08Speaker 6: the show today being picked by, them but that was
- 9:11Speaker 6: my only thirty visit and like they get that sense of,
- 9:14Speaker 6: like you KNOW i, COULD i can definitely be.
- 9:16Speaker 7: Here what did you learn about playing offensive line through
- 9:19Speaker 7: your through your experience blocking front Of lye quarterback And.
- 9:22Speaker 6: Cam, Mooreton, well definitely you got to hold off your.
- 9:25Speaker 6: Block you don't have a, time you, know clocking your
- 9:28Speaker 6: head with. Him you got a lot and to make these.
- 9:31Speaker 6: Plays and if that's holding the ball for aid or you,
- 9:34Speaker 6: know let him do his thing to get guys open
- 9:36Speaker 6: and make, plays then you gotta just give him that.
- 9:40Speaker 6: Time so it was important for all of us to
- 9:42Speaker 6: get our quarterback and my head and you keep them.
- 9:44Speaker 6: Clean you, know we try our, best but we take
- 9:47Speaker 6: pride in blocking for a quarterback that puts himself or
- 9:50Speaker 6: puts others before himself as. Well and you know he's
- 9:52Speaker 6: a great leader to you, know for us At miami
- 9:56Speaker 6: when we're at, there and then now he's gonna be
- 9:58Speaker 6: a great addition to his program's with The. Titans but
- 10:01Speaker 6: just great guy to block. Four and it feels great
- 10:04Speaker 6: to want a block four quarterback like. That and now
- 10:07Speaker 6: blocking For Joe, burrow so you got a tradition that
- 10:10Speaker 6: mindset with him as.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Well The bengal sixth and final pick taken in the
- 10:14Speaker 1: sixth round was running Back Taj brooks out Of Texas.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Tech in an extremely deep running back, Class brooks was
- 10:22Speaker 1: among the most. Productive he was eighth in the nation
- 10:25Speaker 1: and rushing this year with fifteen hundred and five yards
- 10:29Speaker 1: and fourth in the country the year before with fifteen
- 10:32Speaker 1: hundred and forty. One Here's Zach, taylor.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Tough great lateral, quickness good ball skills you, know can
- 10:39Speaker 5: protect for us as. Well so really just a really
- 10:42Speaker 5: good all round. Player you, know our running back coach knew.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Him justin hild knew him from the recruiting process years,
- 10:48Speaker 5: ago and so again these are there was a good.
- 10:52Speaker 5: Class towser is one that we were really really high
- 10:54Speaker 5: on from a scouts and coaches, perspective and so for
- 10:57Speaker 5: him to be there in the sixth round we got,
- 10:58Speaker 5: him we were really hockey that he fell to a step.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Point we have a good mix of running backs in
- 11:04Speaker 5: our room right. Now you, know to answer your, QUESTION
- 11:06Speaker 5: i think all shapes and, sizes all. Abilities so it's really,
- 11:11Speaker 5: good really good to get a mix of those guys in.
- 11:13Speaker 1: There brooks is a five to nine low center of
- 11:17Speaker 1: gravity bowling ball with four or five, speed and another Team.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Captain head Coach Joey maguire called him as good of
- 11:25Speaker 1: a person as there is on this. Planet here's the
- 11:29Speaker 1: twenty three year old running back.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Blessed that the, organization The bengal organizations gave me that drafted.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Me it was.
- 11:36Speaker 4: AWESOME i put a smile to my face and the
- 11:38Speaker 4: running me in and running bass clothes go very. Well
- 11:40Speaker 4: he was a guy that recruited me in college And
- 11:42Speaker 4: i'm GLAD i got to be back with. Him how
- 11:44Speaker 4: would you describe the styles of. RUNNING i feel Like
- 11:47Speaker 4: i'm all on the. Back i'm very. Versatile i'll guess
- 11:50Speaker 4: about out of the. BACKSHIELD i can. Run i'm very
- 11:53Speaker 4: explosive in a run, game AND i can do AND
- 11:55Speaker 4: i have very violent hands and Passbo that's something you
- 11:57Speaker 4: see on my tape a lot and very blessing about.
- 12:00Speaker 3: It, gosh what made you so productive your last two?
- 12:03Speaker 3: Years over fifteen hundred yards each season and also one
- 12:08Speaker 3: hundred and ninety nine yards past receiving this.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Year i'll feel like what made me so productive is
- 12:14Speaker 4: just the consistency you see on take the violets and
- 12:18Speaker 4: how running my runs. OFF i don't let one person taking.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Me that's Something i've just you, know built over my
- 12:25Speaker 4: career and being in the past. GAME i feel LIKE
- 12:27Speaker 4: i have the best hands on a. FIELD i feel
- 12:28Speaker 4: LIKE i feel LIKE i have the best hands in
- 12:30Speaker 4: the running back. Class so that's just how the attitude
- 12:32Speaker 4: That i'll bring towards an, organization you, know in just
- 12:35Speaker 4: the past game and just being explosive that.
- 12:37Speaker 1: WAY A draft overview With Zach taylor And Dave lapham
- 12:40Speaker 1: is still to, come but, first a quick reminder that
- 12:43Speaker 1: The Bengals booth podcast is brought to you By Paid,

- 13:05Speaker 1: a big picture look at the class of twenty twenty
- 13:07Speaker 1: five From Zach.
- 13:09Speaker 5: TAYLOR i think the theme is they love. Football you,
- 13:12Speaker 5: know you're really all six of these guys as you've
- 13:14Speaker 5: gotten to know, them some might know better than. Others
- 13:17Speaker 5: but that's what you took away, is, man these they
- 13:19Speaker 5: just love talking. Football they've been around, football they'll have
- 13:22Speaker 5: been around their. Teammates they made huge impacts on the
- 13:25Speaker 5: programs that they were, at you, know and by a huge,
- 13:27Speaker 5: IMPACT i mean not only on the, field but the
- 13:29Speaker 5: way that people talked about them off the. Field you
- 13:32Speaker 5: could feel that the impact they made, there and that
- 13:34Speaker 5: means something to. Use, man we can put a depth
- 13:37Speaker 5: chart out there and feel, like feel really good about
- 13:39Speaker 5: where we're. At that's a big piece that helps us
- 13:43Speaker 5: sleep well at night right. Now and guys that we're excited.
- 13:45Speaker 5: About you. Know so we already had guys currently on
- 13:49Speaker 5: the roster that really got us, excited and then you
- 13:51Speaker 5: get to add these three on defense that we just
- 13:53Speaker 5: added and feel really good. About, now let's go implement
- 13:56Speaker 5: the scheme and get guys comfortable and go.
- 13:59Speaker 1: POINTBALL i had the, last but not least time to
- 14:02Speaker 1: bring in my broadcast, Partner Dave. Lapham All, right, lap
- 14:07Speaker 1: let's start with fourth round draft Pick Barrett carter out Of.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Clemson they doubled down on the linebacker. Position this guy's
- 14:14Speaker 1: got good. CREDENTIALS a three year starter for The, tigers
- 14:17Speaker 1: he was a. Captain he rarely came off the, field
- 14:19Speaker 1: whether it was defense or special. TEAMS i would imagine
- 14:23Speaker 1: he'll certainly play a special teams role right. AWAY i
- 14:26Speaker 1: read in one report a scout from another team gave
- 14:29Speaker 1: him a second round. Grade so The bengals weren't the
- 14:31Speaker 1: only team that thought highly Of Barrett.
- 14:33Speaker 6: Carter.
- 14:34Speaker 3: YEAH i, mean he's he's an athletic, guy stout, guy
- 14:37Speaker 3: six two and thirty, pounds and you, know he can.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Run that's that's the thing that that impressed me up
- 14:46Speaker 3: and down the. Draft they do their homework in that
- 14:48Speaker 3: regard and you, watch you watch. Tape he's. Slippery you,
- 14:51Speaker 3: know he's a guy that you know that doesn't stay.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Blocked he's he's somebody that he had success with me. Captain,
- 15:00Speaker 3: obviously he's a, leader and that's the thing that we've
- 15:03Speaker 3: talked about, Earlier, dan the leadership and the integrity from
- 15:11Speaker 3: a personal, standpoint the people standpoint of this football, team
- 15:14Speaker 3: of these guys they drafted to try to make the
- 15:16Speaker 3: football team is. INCREDIBLE i, mean this kid was A
- 15:19Speaker 3: Buckers award, finalist you, know AND i think he will
- 15:22Speaker 3: be a like a sub package candidate like you're talking.
- 15:25Speaker 3: About he can run in special, teams it will be a.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Factor he had two undred and fifty three. Tackles he
- 15:32Speaker 3: had thirty three tackles for loss in his, career a
- 15:35Speaker 3: couple of passes broken. Up it Wasn't they didn't blitz
- 15:38Speaker 3: him a whole. Lot he didn't pressure the quarterback. Much
- 15:41Speaker 3: twelve and a half, sacks three, interceptions three fumble, recoveries
- 15:44Speaker 3: two forced. Funnels SO i mean he was a stat sheets.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Stuffer he. Did he did a little, bit a little
- 15:49Speaker 3: bit of everything For. Clemson first guy to everwhere number
- 15:53Speaker 3: zero for The Clemson. Tigers so obviously they like his skill,
- 16:00Speaker 3: set the fact that he was a, captain a, leader
- 16:04Speaker 3: highly regarded by his. Teammates and the, thing the thing
- 16:09Speaker 3: that impresses me about every one of these draft, picks
- 16:13Speaker 3: And i'm sure the when the coaches interviewed him and
- 16:16Speaker 3: when the organizational people interviewed, him you can see or
- 16:20Speaker 3: even see and hear how important the game is to these.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Guys you, know it's you, know they're they're they're in
- 16:28Speaker 3: it for the right. Reasons AND i think the culture
- 16:32Speaker 3: that is being built here is not being damaged whatsoever
- 16:36Speaker 3: by bringing any of these guys into the.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Mix so they doubled down at linebacker in the fourth,
- 16:41Speaker 1: round and then they doubled down on offensive line in
- 16:43Speaker 1: the fifth when they Took Jalen rivers out of The
- 16:45Speaker 1: university Of. Miami this is a guy who basically split
- 16:49Speaker 1: his time between tackle and guard for The, hurricanes dabbled
- 16:52Speaker 1: in center at The Senior. BOWL i don't think people
- 16:55Speaker 1: expecting to play center in THE, Nfl but when you
- 16:57Speaker 1: take an offensive lineman in the fifth, round you're probably
- 17:00Speaker 1: not expecting him to be a starter right, away but
- 17:02Speaker 1: you are hoping he can be an important reserve right.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Away and having that versatility between tackle and guard is.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Big it Is. Dan you, know here's a guy that
- 17:12Speaker 3: uh sixty, six three hundred and twenty pounds almost a
- 17:16Speaker 3: thirty five inch arm, length so you, know his wingspan
- 17:20Speaker 3: is enormous as. Well he had ten starts at left,
- 17:25Speaker 3: guard twenty one excuse, me at left, tackle and twenty one.
- 17:29Speaker 6: Start.
- 17:30Speaker 3: No twenty one starts at left, tackle ten starts at left.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Guard that's how it broke. Down when you look at this,
- 17:36Speaker 3: GUY i wouldn't call him, athletic BUT i would call
- 17:41Speaker 3: him fundamentally and technically. Sound and it's, repetitive you, know
- 17:47Speaker 3: it's not like every snap he's doing something. DIFFERENT i
- 17:50Speaker 3: mean the guy has it down in terms of how
- 17:53Speaker 3: he wants to approach blocking people to the line of.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Scrimmage and as big as he, IS i, mean he
- 17:58Speaker 3: reminds me of like you, know A Bruce raymers type
- 18:01Speaker 3: of guy back in the, day just eclipses the. SUN i,
- 18:04Speaker 3: mean he takes up so much, space so much. ROOM
- 18:07Speaker 3: i could see, him you, know competing at both, positions
- 18:12Speaker 3: and like you, say not necessarily a starting. Role but
- 18:15Speaker 3: like we talked about earlier, today every offensive lineman in today's,
- 18:21Speaker 3: game unless you're you, know a stud pro bowl guard
- 18:25Speaker 3: or tackle and you're going to stay, there you have
- 18:28Speaker 3: to be able to have a position. Versatility you've got
- 18:31Speaker 3: to be able to move. Around and game day there's
- 18:35Speaker 3: not ten, linemen you, know so somebody is going to
- 18:38Speaker 3: have to potentially do a little bit more than one
- 18:40Speaker 3: position if there's, injuries god, forbid or if you want
- 18:43Speaker 3: to give somebody a break or A blosso a guy
- 18:47Speaker 3: like that who's, proven you, know at a high Level
- 18:49Speaker 3: Miami florida football is pretty. Good and you, know for
- 18:53Speaker 3: him to have double digit starts at both left guard
- 18:56Speaker 3: and left tackle in his career and, then like you,
- 18:59Speaker 3: said dabbled at, center at The Senior. Bowl it tells
- 19:03Speaker 3: you something about the kid that when the coaches at
- 19:07Speaker 3: The Senior bowl were working with, him his FOOTBALL iq
- 19:12Speaker 3: must be pretty high because they're like going and take
- 19:14Speaker 3: some snaps at center because the center makes a lot of,
- 19:17Speaker 3: calls and so he must be able to assimilate, quickly you,
- 19:20Speaker 3: know new, information new, offenses new, schemes and that's a good.
- 19:24Speaker 3: SIGN i think that never, Never, REALLY i don't know
- 19:27Speaker 3: this for. SURE i, MEAN i don't. Know they didn't list.
- 19:29Speaker 3: It he played any, games But i'm not sure if
- 19:31Speaker 3: he took any practice snaps at center was At, Miami.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Florida but for him to do that at The Senior
- 19:36Speaker 3: bowl against really good, competition even you, know in, practices
- 19:40Speaker 3: he's going against the best in college. Football That's Senior.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Bowl it's the all star game of all star. Games
- 19:47Speaker 3: and then in the game go out and perform and
- 19:52Speaker 3: not look like you don't. Belong it says something about
- 19:54Speaker 3: the guy in his.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Versatility their sixth and final pick was running Back Taj
- 19:58Speaker 1: brooks out Of Texas. TECH i thought they would take
- 20:01Speaker 1: a running back at some point because this was such
- 20:03Speaker 1: a great year for running. Backs the talent was too
- 20:06Speaker 1: good to just completely ignore. Them AND i can vouch
- 20:10Speaker 1: For Taj. Brooks he had one hundred and seventy two
- 20:12Speaker 1: yards AGAINST uc last, year fifteen hundred plus each of
- 20:16Speaker 1: the last two. Years he's five ten two twenty, strong
- 20:21Speaker 1: good at breaking, tackles has the ability to catch the
- 20:24Speaker 1: ball out of the. Backfield to, me great guy To
- 20:27Speaker 1: grabb in the sixth, round.
- 20:28Speaker 3: WELL i know you know what you're looking at from
- 20:31Speaker 3: a football, standpoint and for your have to have that
- 20:35Speaker 3: kind of recommendation about this kid that's obviously a good
- 20:39Speaker 3: pick at the sixth, round AND i agree with. You
- 20:41Speaker 3: running back was you, know AS i was looking at
- 20:44Speaker 3: who they're going to. Take you, know in day, three,
- 20:49Speaker 3: boy there's still a lot of running backs out, there
- 20:52Speaker 3: and at the, combine thirty one. Guys thirty one running
- 20:55Speaker 3: backs show up at the, combine and that's how the
- 20:58Speaker 3: combine was over and looking at. Stuff how they tested
- 21:02Speaker 3: ten to a dozen warranted second looks in my, opinion you,
- 21:05Speaker 3: know including this guy and a few. Others so, yeah
- 21:12Speaker 3: it's when you can get a guy this caliber in
- 21:15Speaker 3: the sixth. ROUND i mean that that that is picked
- 21:19Speaker 3: one hundred and ninety. THREE i, BET i bet if
- 21:21Speaker 3: you said, That Tis, brooks you're going to be picked
- 21:23Speaker 3: one ninety three in this year's. Draft in twenty twenty,
- 21:27Speaker 3: five if he would have looked at you, like what
- 21:29Speaker 3: what have you been? Smoking? Man what's what's wrong with?
- 21:31Speaker 3: You so, again it's like there are so many of,
- 21:34Speaker 3: them and not just the running back. Position this draft.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Had in my, OPINION i don't know how Many Pro
- 21:41Speaker 3: bowlers it's going to. Have you never. Know you can't
- 21:43Speaker 3: Forecast pro. BOWLERS i don't think you. Know it's it's
- 21:47Speaker 3: it's it's very. Difficult but it has so many good football.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Players and the running back position may have had from
- 21:55Speaker 3: a ratio, standpoint as many good football players as any
- 21:58Speaker 3: position group in the. Draft so to have a guy like,
- 22:01Speaker 3: that she'll be. Around i'd pick one ninety. THREE i
- 22:06Speaker 3: bet The bengals in the room are, like let's let's
- 22:09Speaker 3: get this done before anybody realizes this is a brink.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Robbery all, right let's wrap things. Up this draft reminds
- 22:18Speaker 1: me of the twenty twenty draft To Joe burrow, draft
- 22:21Speaker 1: not that they drafted anybody Like. Joe that happens, once you,
- 22:25Speaker 1: know in a franchise's, history or maybe a few times
- 22:28Speaker 1: in a franchise's. History but the way that they are
- 22:31Speaker 1: similar is the character. Qualities in twenty, twenty every player
- 22:35Speaker 1: that they took except FOR T higgins was a team,
- 22:38Speaker 1: captain AND t would have been had he Stated clemson
- 22:41Speaker 1: for one more. Year very similar this time. Around these
- 22:44Speaker 1: guys have great, character very engaging, personalities good. Backstories Demetrius
- 22:52Speaker 1: knight is a married father of. TWO i really think
- 22:55Speaker 1: they leaned heavily on the character aspect this.
- 22:58Speaker 3: YEAR i couldn't agree with you more or you, know
- 23:01Speaker 3: and you look at it that they're all, leaders they're
- 23:05Speaker 3: all passionate about the game of. FOOTBALL i we talked
- 23:07Speaker 3: about the game of football is very important to, them
- 23:11Speaker 3: and you, know you have to have some nasty in,
- 23:14Speaker 3: you and particularly the the guys in the trenches and the,
- 23:18Speaker 3: linebackers and they've got appropriate nasty in. Them you. Know
- 23:21Speaker 3: it's it's like the. Game they're they're all, physical like you,
- 23:25Speaker 3: said they're all, competitive they're all got high FOOTBALL. Iq
- 23:30Speaker 3: as you said. CAPTAINS i think the the overwhelming common
- 23:38Speaker 3: denominator for me and a lot of these picks in
- 23:41Speaker 3: the draft is character and football. Character and they're, different
- 23:49Speaker 3: but you, know there's some traits that are, similar but
- 23:51Speaker 3: football character is a little bit a little bit different
- 23:55Speaker 3: because you, know you're you have to be, physical you
- 24:00Speaker 3: have to be, competitive you have to try, to you,
- 24:04Speaker 3: know beat the other guy at all costs kind of.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Thing and you, know there are some things going out,
- 24:10Speaker 3: there hand in hand combat where if we're out in
- 24:12Speaker 3: the streets and with the general, public to be a
- 24:15Speaker 3: warrant for your, arrest you, know and. That but that's
- 24:19Speaker 3: but guys that can compete at that level within their
- 24:22Speaker 3: framework of the rules of the of the game and
- 24:24Speaker 3: everything that that's high football. Character and when and when
- 24:28Speaker 3: they get recognized for their leadership qualities and they become,
- 24:31Speaker 3: captains you, KNOW i think that's a big. Deal and,
- 24:35Speaker 3: AGAIN i Think zach is building a hell of a
- 24:37Speaker 3: culture and these guys are going to add to. It
- 24:41Speaker 3: and we talked about it a little, Earlier, dan it's
- 24:43Speaker 3: a it's a destination that guys want to be a part.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Of Joe burrow is a big factor in. THAT i,
- 24:48Speaker 3: mean this guy is he's. Special he's he's a special,
- 24:51Speaker 3: player a special. Person and you know the two wide
- 24:54Speaker 3: receivers that they, resign you, Know chas And, higgins it's
- 24:57Speaker 3: LIKE gasicki sign him at the tight end. Position what
- 25:01Speaker 3: he can? Do you, know Fair child is somebody that
- 25:06Speaker 3: he couldn't have gone to a better. Team he'll be
- 25:09Speaker 3: the first to tell you that his pass protection is
- 25:11Speaker 3: a cut above is run blocking right. Now it's not
- 25:13Speaker 3: like he can't run, block but he is an unbelievable
- 25:16Speaker 3: pass protector because of his balance due to, wrestling and you,
- 25:20Speaker 3: know two time state, champion AND i mean he's, flexible
- 25:23Speaker 3: he's he's got a. Balance and you, KNOW i like
- 25:27Speaker 3: that picked in because you know that will solidify the.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Pocket you, know it'll it'll keep it. Firm if You
- 25:32Speaker 3: Joe brow a firm, pocket damage will be. Done SO i,
- 25:36Speaker 3: MEAN i, LIKE i like a lot of these picks
- 25:39Speaker 3: for a lot of. Reasons AND i know the naysayers
- 25:42Speaker 3: out there are, like, yeah, WELL i don't have a
- 25:44Speaker 3: problem with how they addressed the, draft and you shouldn't
- 25:48Speaker 3: because they basically did what they said they were going to.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Do you, know we're gonna get better in the. Middle
- 25:53Speaker 3: we're going to address the interior the offensive, line going
- 25:55Speaker 3: to address the interior the defensive line, linebackers and they
- 25:58Speaker 3: did that for the most. Part people's gripe is is
- 26:02Speaker 3: it the right? People AND i mean, that you, know
- 26:05Speaker 3: everybody will Tell, yeah everybody has an, opinion but nobody
- 26:08Speaker 3: knows for sure right. Now that's for.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Sure that's always the case with the. Draft final. Thing
- 26:13Speaker 1: the guy who has the biggest impact as a rookie
- 26:16Speaker 1: and the guy who has the greatest Career i'll say
- 26:21Speaker 1: impact is a Rookie Dylan. FAIRCHILD i mean they've more
- 26:24Speaker 1: or less said the left guard job is his unless
- 26:27Speaker 1: something goes wrong between now and the start of the.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Season best career hard to not Take Shamar stewart. THERE
- 26:34Speaker 1: i think the floor on his career Is Sam. Hubbard solid,
- 26:40Speaker 1: pro maybe never makes A Pro bowl or has double digit,
- 26:44Speaker 1: sacks but he's going to help you win a lot of.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Games and the ceiling is close To Miles. GARRETT i,
- 26:49Speaker 1: mean will he be that? Good that's impossible to. Say
- 26:52Speaker 1: Miles garrett was the first pick in the. DRAFT Nfl
- 26:55Speaker 1: defensive player of The, year you could never say. That
- 26:58Speaker 1: but he's got the same side, speed athletic. Ability if
- 27:03Speaker 1: he's deployed properly and coached, well he can be a
- 27:06Speaker 1: multi Time pro.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Bowler, YEAH i agree with your, selections stand you, KNOW
- 27:11Speaker 3: i mean these guys are drafted on the higher end
- 27:13Speaker 3: of it for a. Reason from an initial, standpoint you,
- 27:17Speaker 3: know from a, contribution it's going to be very interesting
- 27:21Speaker 3: to see what they do With Shamar stewart because he
- 27:25Speaker 3: is another case of unbelievably. Versatile he can play in
- 27:30Speaker 3: rush outside obviously it can be a wide, nine or you,
- 27:33Speaker 3: know he can get on the shoulder of the tackle
- 27:36Speaker 3: and rush and then kick inside and do the same
- 27:38Speaker 3: thing with a guard getting on the shoulder or just you,
- 27:39Speaker 3: know inside on him or right over him in bull,
- 27:43Speaker 3: him and he can he can really do almost anything
- 27:45Speaker 3: they're lining up in the run in the. PAST i
- 27:48Speaker 3: mean he. Is he's a puzzling guy because, man when
- 27:51Speaker 3: you look at his physical, attributes it doesn't add up to,
- 27:54Speaker 3: production you, know but you, wonder is how much of
- 27:59Speaker 3: it related to? Scheme are they asking him to do
- 28:02Speaker 3: something that isn't conducive to him displaying his amazing gifts
- 28:08Speaker 3: or is It you know a guy that has thirty
- 28:11Speaker 3: nine pressures in this year and converts it to one
- 28:14Speaker 3: and a half. Sacks it just makes you scratch your.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Head but with, him a lot of times you look
- 28:20Speaker 3: and he's within an arm grab of a guy because
- 28:24Speaker 3: of his athletic. Ability guys can't get as close as
- 28:27Speaker 3: he gets because they can't they don't have that kind
- 28:29Speaker 3: of burst and acceleration and closing. Speed SO i, mean
- 28:32Speaker 3: it's almost like you have to have separate. CATEGORIES i,
- 28:35Speaker 3: mean is that really a miss sack or is that
- 28:38Speaker 3: just a freak that you, Know oh my, gosh you
- 28:40Speaker 3: shouldn't have been there. Anyway and THEN i don't, know
- 28:43Speaker 3: maybe you know a different coaching staff approaching it differently with.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Him ALL i know is this. Guy if somebody said to,
- 28:53Speaker 3: me your opponent this week is a massive man, SIZE i,
- 29:00Speaker 3: wait he also has a forty inch vertical. Jump he
- 29:03Speaker 3: also broad jumps almost you, know eleven feet ten feet eleven.
- 29:06Speaker 3: Inches you got to be kidding. Me so IT'S i
- 29:12Speaker 3: think there's a lot of meat on the, bone there's
- 29:14Speaker 3: a lot to there's he's a. Sending there's upside and
- 29:19Speaker 3: that that's going to be interesting to. SEE i think
- 29:22Speaker 3: he will make an. Impact will he, start who, knows
- 29:25Speaker 3: but he'll be part of. PACKAGES i, mean he's gonna.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Play he's gonna, play and as he, improves will his
- 29:33Speaker 3: career arc you, know take him to down the. Road
- 29:36Speaker 3: is he going to be the? Guy and they Like Demetrius?
- 29:39Speaker 3: KNIGHT i, mean how do you not like that? Dude
- 29:42Speaker 3: the interview you did with him was like you've known
- 29:45Speaker 3: each other for a. While you, know he's just one
- 29:47Speaker 3: of those guys and smart guy family. MAN i know
- 29:54Speaker 3: for a, fact WHEN i was a, rookie one thing
- 29:57Speaker 3: that helped me WAS i was, married and, uh you,
- 30:01Speaker 3: know the next YEAR i had a. Child but he's
- 30:03Speaker 3: already married with two kids and just being. MARRIED i, said,
- 30:08Speaker 3: MAN i got responsibilities. HERE i have to be, dependable, reliable.
- 30:13Speaker 3: ACCOUNTABLE i can't go out raising hell and you, KNOW
- 30:16Speaker 3: i got to take care of business. Here this guy
- 30:18Speaker 3: is going to be serious about the game of, football
- 30:21Speaker 3: and uh you know he's he already. Is AND i
- 30:25Speaker 3: think he's that dude's got some long. Arms, Man it's
- 30:28Speaker 3: like he's a condoor or. Something it's. Crazy and he
- 30:31Speaker 3: was a, quarterback so he's. Athletic he hasn't played linebacker
- 30:35Speaker 3: all that, long so his ascension can be quick and
- 30:40Speaker 3: and uh pretty. HIGH i like. HIM i like him
- 30:43Speaker 3: for a lot of. REASONS i can see why when
- 30:45Speaker 3: the coaches interviewed, him are you kidding? Me this dude
- 30:49Speaker 3: he's a plus in Our lark. Room BUT i agree
- 30:51Speaker 3: with you About. Fairchild you, KNOW i THINK i Think
- 30:55Speaker 3: fairchild is going to be a guy that will have
- 30:57Speaker 3: an impact this. Year will he started let? Guard he,
- 31:00Speaker 3: Might he's in the. BATTLE i, mean you got a good.
- 31:03Speaker 3: Shot if he, doesn't will he be giving them good? Steps?
- 31:06Speaker 3: YEAH i think he. Will and you, KNOW i think
- 31:09Speaker 3: that he is a, high high level pass. Protector two
- 31:14Speaker 3: years in THE sec to give up one quarterback sack
- 31:16Speaker 3: and a two year spanning in THE, sec so you,
- 31:20Speaker 3: know all the things we talked about earlier with. Him his.
- 31:23Speaker 3: Balance you, know if he does get taken off, balance
- 31:29Speaker 3: his recovery is unbelievable because of the. Wrestling that was
- 31:32Speaker 3: the thing WITH. Crimrai it's, like, OH i, think, NO
- 31:35Speaker 3: i don't have. HIM i have a gun, man you,
- 31:37Speaker 3: know and uh it's it's not like he's a horrible run.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Blocker AND i think he'll get he'll get better with.
- 31:44Speaker 3: That but his his lateral side to side, Movement dan
- 31:49Speaker 3: we had we used to have a drill where there'd
- 31:51Speaker 3: be you, know cones ten yards apart and a defensive
- 31:56Speaker 3: lineman would be changing direction and you had to mirror
- 31:59Speaker 3: him we called it Mirror dodge, drill and you, know
- 32:02Speaker 3: we had some pretty quick defensive. Linemen Like Mike reeder was,
- 32:04Speaker 3: like oh my, god how AM i going to stay
- 32:05Speaker 3: with this? Guy? Laterally AND i didn't do all of
- 32:08Speaker 3: that great with, him BUT i mean it was, like
- 32:11Speaker 3: as AS i got, BETTER i, Thought, man this guy's
- 32:14Speaker 3: really he's really helping my lateral. Equipments. Here this guy
- 32:18Speaker 3: his lateral. MOVEMENT i think that's why he's such. Good Pastor.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Stout he anchors because of, wrestling bending at the, knees
- 32:25Speaker 3: not at the, waist so he's getting the pad level
- 32:27Speaker 3: low in a good form and then, man he can
- 32:31Speaker 3: move side to. Side Joe burrow's gonna love. HIM i
- 32:34Speaker 3: think The pocket's gonna be a lot. Firmer.
- 32:35Speaker 1: MAN i Think Dave lapham's gonna love him. Too and
- 32:38Speaker 1: my final thought is THAT i just hope That Demetrius
- 32:41Speaker 1: knight's wife and kids are just as delightful As Lynn
- 32:45Speaker 1: lapham And dave And.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Sarah you're too kind and NOW i know Why lynn
- 32:51Speaker 3: loves you so. Much yeah That i'll tell you. THOUGH i,
- 32:55Speaker 3: mean every day when you when you come, home it's
- 32:58Speaker 3: it's like you realize there's a responsibility. Here you, know
- 33:02Speaker 3: it's not just about you for, you it's it's you
- 33:06Speaker 3: Got you got a lot more important things to think
- 33:10Speaker 3: about and make sure you take care. Of that's for.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Sure And i'm telling, YOU i guarantee. You Demetrius knight
- 33:18Speaker 3: is a hell of a husband and hell of a.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Dad you just it oozes out of, him you. KNOW i,
- 33:24Speaker 3: mean he's one of those guys you just when you
- 33:28Speaker 3: feel like you've known him for a, while when you
- 33:30Speaker 3: sit down with him the first.
