- 0:00Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and welcome to another episode
- 0:05of the United Church of Donga Youth Devotion.
- 0:10Our Bible passage for today is taken from James 2, verse 20b.
- 0:16It says, Faith without works is dead. Our theme is, live out your faith.
- 0:24Faith is a term that we are very familiar with. We hear it being preached at church and even at home.
- 0:32We say it when we share with others about our Christian walk.
- 0:37We are urged and challenged to believe in Jesus Christ.
- 0:41For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son,
- 0:46that whosoever believe in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.
- 0:53This is one verse that most of us know from a young age.
- 0:57We read it, we memorize it, we even believe it. But what do we do with that belief?
- 1:04Could this be just head knowledge?
- 1:07James challenges us in verse 19 by saying, You believe that there is one God. You do well.
- 1:16Even the demons believe and tremble.
- 1:20If you ask Satan if he believed in God and if he answers honestly, he will say yes.
- 1:28The devil believes that there is one God, but does not worship him.
- 1:34In verse 20, James strongly reminds us that faith without works is dead.
- 1:42He is not saying that we must work to earn our salvation.
- 1:48Definitely not. What he's saying is that if we believe in Jesus Christ and do
- 1:55nothing with that belief, then our faith is dead.
- 1:59True faith encompasses more than just agreeing mentally with a list of beliefs.
- 2:07If we reflect on Abraham's response when God told him to take his son Isaac
- 2:14and offer him as a sacrifice to God, Abraham obeyed God without question.
- 2:20He lived out his faith in God through his obedience to God's command.
- 2:27James is provoking us today to get out of our comfort zones.
- 2:32We should not get too comfortable with the idea that we believe in God and the teachings of the Bible.
- 2:41We need to rise above cultural identification, thinking we grew up in the church and we have faith.
- 2:50Living out our faith is more than verbal affirmation that we believe in God
- 2:57and we belong to the church.
- 3:00We must not be Christians in name only.
- 3:04Our faith must be shown in how we live our lives daily.
- 3:10If we are the ones who always tell lies or have hate in our hearts towards others,
- 3:18live out our faith means we learn from the scriptures that we are to love one another.
- 3:25Therefore, we discipline ourselves to let go of our hateful attitudes and lies,
- 3:32but relate to others in love and always tell the truth.
- 3:37Our faith in God must be more than skin deep.
- 3:41When our faith is alive, we undergo daily transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit,
- 3:48which aligns our personalities and our priorities with the Word of God. Let us pray.
- 3:58Lord Jesus, thank you for reminding me today that I must live out my faith in you.
- 4:05Help me to develop and nurture a relationship with you.
- 4:11In Jesus' name, Amen.
