- 0:35You want a great life, but upgraded thinking knows it's
- 0:38built out of great days, one after another.
- 0:42Here's the story. On May 1st, 2007, a graphic
- 0:46designer in Charleston, SC named Mike Winkleman decided to make
- 0:50one piece of digital art and post it.
- 0:53Nothing special. The early ones weren't good, and
- 0:55he'd be the first to tell you that.
- 0:57Crude little sketches, the kind of thing you'd be embarrassed to
- 0:59show anybody. But he made another one the next
- 1:02day, and the next. He called the project every
- 1:05days. He kept going.
- 1:07He didn't stop through his kids being born.
- 1:10He didn't stop on the days he didn't feel like it.
- 1:12The sketches became illustrations and the
- 1:14illustrations became elaborate 3D scenes every single day for
- 1:19over 13 years. One new piece, no misses 5000
- 1:25days. Then in early 2021 he stitched
- 1:29the 1st 5000 of those images into one giant collage.
- 1:34Christie's, you know the 255 year old auction house put it up
- 1:39for sale, is sold for $69,000,000 and made him one of
- 1:45the three most valuable living artists on earth next to names
- 1:48like Hockney and Coons. Nobody paid $69 million for day
- 1:53one. Day one was a throwaway.
- 1:56They paid for the stack, the pile, the masterpiece was never
- 2:01a single image. It was 5000, ordinary days that
- 2:04no one applauded, sitting on top of each other until they were
- 2:08worth a fortune. My mentor, Brian Johnson has a
- 2:12name for this. He calls them Masterpiece Days.
- 2:16His whole philosophy is simple. If you want to create a great
- 2:19life, you create a great day. And then you do it again
- 2:23tomorrow. You don't win the life, you'll
- 2:26win the day. Today's the day.
- 2:29Not someday. Not someday never comes.
- 2:32There's a target you're building toward, and there's one thing
- 2:35you can do today that moves you an inch closer to it.
- 2:39That inch is the whole game. The better story to tell
- 2:42yourself is my life is a masterpiece built one day at a
- 2:47time. Mike never did a great thing.
- 2:51He did a small thing on a day that didn't matter and then
- 2:54again on the next day that didn't matter until the days
- 2:57that didn't matter became the thing that mattered most.
- 3:00That's a masterpiece day and a life is just a pile of them.
- 3:06Tell me a story of a masterpiece.
